EDITORIAL

THE AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL IS ABOUT TO BE BORN I remember our usual procedure for subsistence faming back home. Depending on the soil to be planted on. If the soil has been busy in the last farming season, there will be need for manure and even the system of crop rotation. Here the soil is prepared for the onerous task of food production. However, virgin lands or forests take different cue. Now it is my pleasure to announce to you the advent of ‘The African International’, a pan-African magazine from the stable of Uyokanjo Media. The new magazine targets the global reader particularly followers of the political and economic life of the African continent. It will also dwell on social issues and women empowerment. The African International will be launched in Dublin next April and followed up with similar launch in Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya. We shall keep you posted on developments. Stay tuned. WINNIE MADIKIZELA-MANDELA Mother of the Nation Together, hand in hand, with that stick of matches, with our necklace we shall liberate this country. Many grew up on Hugh Masekela’s famous tune which runs thus - Bring back Nelson Mandela, Bring him back home to Soweto, I want to see him walking hand in hand With Winnie Mandela…no more war. Winnie Mandela was born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela in the village of Mbongweni, Bizana, in the Transkei. The fourth of eight children. Her father, Columbus, was minister of the Transkei Governments’ Forestry and Agriculture Department during Kaizer Matanzima’s rule. Her mother, Nomathamsanqa Mzaidume (Gertrude), a domestic science teacher, died when Winnie was only eight years old. Winnie Mandela began her primary education in Bizana and post-primary at Shawbury High School, where she distinguished herself as a person with exceptional leadership qualities. However she turned it down and opted for a challenging position as the first qualified Black medical social worker at the Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg instead. Winnie later earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. As a writer put it, “Winnie is the Mandela that kept Nelson in our consciousness.” She spent most of her marital life championing the cause against minority white rule in South Africa. Winnie Mandela was a thorn in the flesh for the conspirators that jailed her husband that when the later was released from prison, she had become a political figure with a huge following in her own right. For many of her husband’s time in prison, she was restricted and confined certain locations due to her vibrancy and activism except for the times she was allowed to visit him. FAMILY & LOVE he had been tricked – because he had already become one flesh with her. [Genesis 29:23, 27, 30].

By Abdul Yusuf

VIRGINITY

… ONLY ME?

We live in a generation where being a virgin past a certain age is highly regarded as such a big deal. So that’s pretty much what I did, I made a big deal out of it. I was proudly abstinent and trust me; I didn’t decline any opportunity to announce my “virginal” state. Then I met Nneka. I had been trying to win her to Christ and then possibly myself. She is such a beautiful, intelligent, gifted and creative young woman but a little laid back about the things of God. I mean, she does not even go to Church so how responsible could she possibly have been? I was so concerned about her soul. I thought to myself “if only she could add the Godfactor, her life will make so much sense.” In time we got pretty close. I secured her confidence and also noticed that she was quite evasive about her romantic life. So I put it to her one day. “Who are you courting”? She mentioned a guy’s name and confidently, I asked my next question, “so how sexually active are you?’’ To my utter amazement, she replied with a look of alarm on her face, “I don’t do that!” To say the least, I was shocked to hear that Nneka was a virgin despite being in a relationship. This is a lady who could not even remember the last time she was in church. Now, Cynthia had no moral obligations provided by a pastor, no social scrutiny provided by a church department, and definitely no inclination to being answerable to any God anywhere! She graduated from the University and had been living by herself for years. Yet she wasn’t “doing it”. Then I got really curious and asked how come. And all she told me was. ‘I have always had sense!’ For her, it is not about God! She is not doing it because of a Supreme Being up there who she is trying to impress or who

is going to judge her. It is about common sense! Hmm…, Common sense informing her decision. Forget Cynthia for a second, I have been friends with Edna for awhile. Her courtship was one I had long envied. So it was with excitement that I attended her wedding. Then while waiting in the car before the glorious entrance into the reception hall, shortly after the Church wedding, I mischievously teased her about the kiss she and her husband shared during the ‘kiss your bride’ segment in Church. Then she said ‘It was so beautiful. That was my first kiss ever’ Again, I was literally slapped with shock! “Like seriously? ‘You have never kissed?’” Then she nodded affirmatively. Here is a lady who got married at a year closer to 30 than 25. To her, that is the right way to live before marriage, the only way acceptable for a daughter of Zion! ‘Never been kissed, never been touched!’ Oh mai God! I just stood there flooded with the image of the guys I had kissed and let kiss me. Lord have mercy! Over time, I have met several other virgins who have decided to preserve the gift of their body to the man of their destiny. Then I stopped believing virgins are scarce. Dearest, you are not the only virgin standing! There are a whole lot out there. Whatever the devil or the society has made you to believe before now does not matter. You are not the only one! There could be so many perversion sin the land and countless daughters, who are indiscriminate about sex, but beyond that, virginity is not out of fashion and virgins are definitely not extinct.

In Adebola Deji – Kurunmi’s note SEX, OH MY GOD, SEX!!!, she said ‘Sex is thrilling, amazing and incredibly powerful. Sex is one of the very few serious, lifedefining experiences that are yet coated in sugary appeal. It as the fire in your bed, flame in your soul, melting body, heights of passion, muffled whisper and ruffled sheet. Yet, it is a covenant, a spiritual exchange, souls poured into one, a bond that binds and handwriting on the future. It is amazing how God has made a deeply spiritual transaction so pleasurable.’ I understand that being a virgin can be a real drag. Especially when your association is wrong and all your girlfriends swap stories of passionate lovemaking, scandalous screwing and one-night-stands, leaving you with nothing to contribute to the conversation; it’s easy to feel like you are the odd woman out. It’s also easy to feel like you are missing out. Combine the two and you might start to feel like you should just hurry up and lose your virginity! Being a virgin in this day and age is quite difficult because you are literally swimming against the current of the modern times, but it’s a choice at the end of the day. Virginity also tends to scare off a lot of people that would want to be in a relationship with you, but also in the end, it usually turns out to be a blessing because it eliminates crappy and toxic people out of your life. As a virgin, your ability to rock someone’s world doesn’t come from how you perform in bed. Virginity is a gift, to be honourably saved for that one person you decide to spend your lifetime with (i.e. marriage partner.) It is the greatest emotional/physical treasure a person can GIVE. You don’t take it. You don’t lose it. You give it. Isn’t that what true love is about? Chaste woman, I dare to call you a UNICORN. And this is not just about the biological virgins, but as well about those who have been bought and washed with hyssop. It applies to daughters who despite their past have run back to the cross and initiated a new Covenant of purity with God. You are as well covered! What a woman you are! Now listen up, I want you to add these points to whatever reasons have kept you a virgin till now. “You are ‘married’ to whoever you have sex with! In the Bible, it’s not really the wedding that does the ‘joining together’; it is the sex— the welding. The Bible makes no distinction between marriage and sex. After Abraham slept with Hagar (his servant girl), she also became HIS WIFE .From that point forward, scriptures had to specify when referring to Sarah by using the phrase “…your wife Sarah.” (Gen. 18:910, 20:2, 23:19). In Genesis 24:67, Rebecca became Isaac’s wife as soon as she was taken to his tent. The real marriage covenant is two people engaging in sexual intercourse. Jacob could not return Leah the day after the wedding ceremony – even after realizing

www.africaworldnewspaper.com

In Genesis 29:21, we see that Jacob, when later demanding for Rachael, asked her father to give her over that ‘I may lie with her’. That is what matters! Sex is what turns Miss. Rachael into Mrs. Jacob—not a golden ring!” It is also interesting to note that one of the first questions asked by judges handling divorce cases is “Was this Marriage consummated?” (I.e. have you had sex?). If yes, the marriage cannot be ANNULLED, there can only be a DIVORCE. You may have also noticed that couples who have been together for a while begin to resemble each other. This is because there has been a three-fold mixing: Spirits have mixed; Souls have been tied and bodies have communicated with each other deeply! What is the point? The female leaves the bed with A PART OF ANOTHER MAN inside of her (in every sense of the word) and vice versa! Spare me a minute though, are you sure you are not just a technical virgin? Huh! We know you have done pretty much everything but penis-in-vagina. But if you don’t want to mess up this journey don’t start what you can’t handle! The skin is only a few centimetres deep and beneath that skin; there are 18million nerves passing information round. Whenever someone touches you sexually, your nerves send information that is stored somewhere in your brain. That’s why when you see the person later you remember the touch! You have imprints of people on your life through sexual relationships. My father once said, “In a generation where standards are generally zero… you need to put yourself inside some standards. …policies… and refuse to go out of it… NO… not for anything or anyone.’’ We refuse to be kissed, touched, smooched, romanced….and we won’t allow any strange objects into our bodies till we are given in marriage! Yes, the way down the road maybe tough and temptations may lie here and there, but we are resolute about this because we have UNDERSTANDING! We will not only be pure in our bodies, but in our hearts, words, dressing and actions. We will be an epitome of what grace can do and we will be the standard for all women to follow! And we don’t mind being called ”old-school.” In-fact, we proudly answer to that. Men desire a woman who can say No! This is the mother of all attractions. Can I get a witness? Always remember, the pleasure of sex is nothing compared to the pleasure of a manifested destiny! God has seen your entire life even before you were born. How he longs for you to fulfill purpose and the prophecies that have gone ahead of you! Prophecies do not just happen but by the consistent discipline of those who have received them! Tarry in this groove TILL a man dares sign his life to you. Remember, the heaven is proud of you. Sex is good; it is better with the right person BUT best served at the right time… MARRIAGE! Period!

ReConnect Africa (RCA): Can you tell us about yourself and your background? Dr Vincent Agyapong: I was born in Koforidua in the Eastern Region of Ghana to parents who very much cherished and invested in our education. I was the second child and the only son of five siblings. I also have four half-sisters and a half-brother. I am married to beautiful Belinda and we are blessed with three lovely children; Gerald who is 11, Nadine who is 9 and Felix who is 7. RCA: What did you study and what were your initial intentions for your career? Dr Vincent Agyapong: I attended Madona International School for my primary education and Pope John Secondary School for my secondary education. Both institutions are in Koforidua in the Eastern region of Ghana. I then proceeded to the School of Medical Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, where I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and also my undergraduate medical degree. I completed my internship at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi where I undertook rotations in Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology. I then travelled to Europe but with plans initially to pursue postgraduate studies in International Public Health in the United States of America, where I had secured admission at Tulane University. However, I did not secure the expected funding to be able to undertake this programme of study, so ended up remaining in Europe where I completed both basic and higher specialist training in General Adult and Academic Psychiatry in Dublin, Ireland. In addition, I completed a research doctorate in psychiatry and postgraduate certifications in forensic medicine, statistics and health services management and I am currently completing a PhD in Global Health at the Centre for Global Health, Trinity College, University of Dublin. RCA: What were the key influences in your choice of career? Dr Vincent Agyapong: I entered both the

medical profession and the mental health profession somewhat unwillingly. I was forced by my father to read biology for my A-Levels rather than Mathematics, which was my preference. I wanted to study engineering, while he wanted me to read medicine, so I had to give up my ambition to do what my father thought was right for me. Again, after failing to secure a scholarship to pursue postgraduate studies in International Health, I decided to work in any specialty in Europe for a year or two to accrue enough funds so that I could go to Tulane University. I settled on Psychiatry because it was easier to get a job in this specialty as an international medical graduate. However, after working in psychiatry for one month, I became convinced that it was fulfilling to work in this specialty and so I made the decision to focus on making the best out of the opportunities that working as a trainee psychiatrist presented. RCA: What would you say have been the highlights of your career to date? Dr Vincent Agyapong: I was the first Senior Registrar in Psychiatry ever to be appointed to St Patrick’s University Hospital, the largest tertiary referral center for mental health patients in the Republic of Ireland, and probably the oldest independent mental health hospital in Europe. In addition to being a Senior Registrar at St Patrick’s University Hospital from 2009 to 2011, I served as a Clinical Lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine, University of Dublin. I was privileged to have worked with many supportive mentors including Professor Declan McLaughlin, Professor James Lucey, Dr Connor Farren and Professor Michael Gill. I was promoted to Clinical Senior Lecturer in 2012. “After working in psychiatry for one month, I became convinced that it was fulfilling to work in this specialty and so I made the decision to focus on making the best out of the opportunities that working as a trainee psychiatrist presented.” During my training, I engaged in active service development and patient centered research and other clinical governance activities which have so far led to about forty publications in national and international peer reviewed journals. I have also made about twenty-six national and international conference presentations, including at the World Psychiatric Association International Congress, the European Congress of Psychiatry, the annual conference of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland and the Royal College of Psychiatrist Congress of the Faculty of Addictions. In addition, I frequently review journal articles for international journals, including the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, the International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice, the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine, the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Journal of Research in

Peace, Gender and Development and I serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Hospital Administration. I have been a visiting scholar to the School of Medical Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi since 2009 and have been going to Ghana to teach medical students annually at no cost to the university. As part of my ongoing commitment to psychiatric education in Ghana, I established the annual inter-medical school public speaking competition in 2010 to promote psychiatry as a fulfilling career option for Ghanaian medical students. This programme has ongoing sponsorship from St Patrick’s University Hospital and St John of God Development Company in Dublin. So far, through this programme, 8 Ghanaian medical students have undertaken four weeks each of sponsored elective placements at the two world-renowned mental health hospitals in Dublin. I have won several academic and social awards including Best NCHD Research Prize from the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, the Henry Hutchinson Scholarship from the University of Dublin and the Outstanding Innovation in Health Award from the Royal Power Magazine. In September 2011, I was named by the Royal Power Magazine as one of the top ten most influential Africans living in Ireland. Against all the odds, I attended a competitive interview for a permanent consultant post in Ireland and was recommended for appointment, having placed first at the interview ahead of a dozen other applicants most of whom were indigenous Irish citizens. However, by divine providence, I was simultaneously offered and accepted a position in Canada as a psychiatrist with the Northern Lights Regional Centre in Fort McMurray and as an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. I moved to Canada with my family to assume these positions in August 2013 RCA: Where did you train and what technical skills do you need in order to do what you are doing? Dr Vincent Agyapong: I first enrolled on the Royal College of Surgeons Rotational Training scheme in Psychiatry in July 2005. I worked in various hospitals in Dunlin as part of the basic specialist training, including St Brendan’s Hospital, St Vincent’s University Hospital, Connolly Hospital and Beaumont Hospital. I obtained Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrist in three years and proceeded to complete my higher specialist training at St Patrick’s University Hospital and Connolly Hospital. As a psychiatrist, I am patient centered and recovery focused in my approach to the care of those with mental health difficulties. Everything I do as psychiatrist is therefore centered on how I can help the patient to recover and lead a productive life that will be beneficial to themselves, their families and to society at large. As a researcher, I am interested in exploring and evaluating new cost effective preventative and treatment strategies and ensuring that they are evidence based and beneficial to my patients, their families and to society at large. As a teacher, I am interested in impacting knowledge to the next generation of doctors and allied health care professionals in a meaningful and practical way that stimulates their interest in the field of mental health. RCA: What have been your biggest challenges so far in your career? Dr Vincent Agyapong: The biggest challenge for my career so far was my recent

decision to move to Canada from Ireland. With the support I received from many of my colleagues in Ireland over the years and the steady progress I was making, it was difficult to just leave it all for another foreign country. I had always thought that if I were to leave Ireland, then I would be returning to Ghana. However, the opportunities that Canada presented were hard to resist, which have put back my plans to return to Ghana by a few years. RCA: How do you think your African heritage has impacted on what you do and how you are perceived? Dr Vincent Agyapong: As an African who grew up as part of a large family of 10 children, at an early age I learnt the skills needed to survive in a competitive world. This has helped me to aspire to succeed, no matter the environment in which I find myself. Training in Ireland, my African heritage came with some challenges which I had to navigate. It also presented me with some opportunities as I was easily recognized and singled out from among my peers for my numerous contributions to the many hospitals I worked in Dublin. It has always been my aspiration to prove that given the same opportunities, the black African is capable of achieving excellence at the same level and rate as our European and North American counterparts and I am satisfied with the progress I made so far in this regard. “I will advise all African patriots in diaspora, regardless of their trade or profession, to consider making a contribution to the growth and development of the African continent.” RCA: What have been the biggest lessons for you along the way? Dr Vincent Agyapong: The biggest lesson for me has been that selfless hard work and trust in God always open opportunities for people. I believe I have been highly favored by God in most of the places I have worked in partly because I have availed myself of opportunities and have been selfless in my dealings with my superiors, work colleagues, patients and their relatives. Certainly working hard to create opportunities for other people has opened opportunities for me without that being my original intention. RCA: What advice can you offer to others who would like to take the path you have chosen? Dr Vincent Agyapong: I will advise all African patriots in diaspora, regardless of their trade or profession, to consider making a contribution to the growth and development of the African continent. We should all let the continent’s problems be our problems, because we have all in one way or the other shared and benefited from its richness. I will encourage my fellow Africans in diaspora to consider visiting the continent at least once annually and identify a specific project they can embark on that can better the lot of the continent.

Stay connected on-board your Flight…

with UCHENNA ONYENAGUBO When we board the plane from one point to the other, there is a procedure that is constantly repeated as regulation permits. Purchase your ticket, get your boarding pass and arrive at the airport to check-in, wait at the Gates for boarding time. Once you get on the aircraft, on-board proceedings commence with a demonstration regarding flight safety and what to do in case of emergencies. At the end of the display by the

air hostess, the next repetitive announcement is adherence to the seat belt lights and most importantly, turns off all mobile devices. This is the area of concentration for today’s Tech_ Pilot edition. As we know, the use of mobile devices is prohibited on planes, especially during take-off and landing, because these two instances are crucial. Different country boundaries have the same policy imposed on their Aviation

on during flights, even illicitly use them to call or send text messages. And we are yet to record any aeronautical disaster relating to flyers using their mobile devices so, it’s more or less a cautious exercise. The trains, coaches and even local buses now have on-board WiFi for the comfort of passengers. So, the services have now been extended to some major airlines. During a long haul flight, it is amazing to see an advert by the airline about

an on-board WiFi services in one of my trips. In fact, a text message alert was delivered before the advert came on, advising that you are presently on-board and advised to switch off mobile device during takeoff and landing. . The services do not come free like in most of the land transportation mentioned but you will not break a bank to avail the services. It is reasonable if the Internet is essential to you especially if you run an online business. Now, the benefit of it is the opportunity to avail Internet connection on your mobile device. The advantage to watch movies, play online games, above all read your emails; make Internet phone calls to loved ones and business partners. Some of this journey takes over twelve hours or thereabout, therefore having the Internet with you will be handy. From the advert, cost plan is hourly or twenty (24) hour service which was reasonably priced. The next time you are on board a long haul flight, do ask for the Wi-Fi, it’s no longer restricted but make sure bring earphones for comfort.

The Pledge Of Success INCOME PLAN

PROJECTION

On your journey to achieve financial freedom or freedom in any category that matters, realize that you must give in order to receive, you must learn in order to teach, and that it takes a conditioned mindset, a burning desire to change an existing state of affairs to achieve that which you seek. The first step to get what you want is to know exactly what you want, and give others the opportunity to achieve the same. Devoid of an end destination in mind, your thoughts will wonder aimlessly without direction like a smoke on a windless day; let figure out how much you desire your monthly income to be. 1. How much is your rent or mortgage? (Accommodation) 2. How much do you spend every month for you and your family upkeep? (Basic Necessity)

3. How much do you spend every month to maintain your family and your lifestyle? (luxury) 4. Your miscellaneous expenses equal 10% of all your expenses; add 1, 2, and 3 above and multiply the result by 10% 5. Your gross expenses equal the addition of 1, 2, 3, and 4 above multiply result by 100 6. Your projected retirement or monthly residual income equals the result of number five? If you are not currently incurring any of the mentioned expenses, then how much would you want each and every one of them to be? The result of all your added expenses was multiplied by 100 to create a maximum output for your mind; even if at the end of your projected time period you managed to generate 10% of the required projected monthly residual income, you will

have generated ten times of all your estimated expenses. Now that you have arrived at a definite income target, let create a daily pledge that will provide your mind the needed focus to achieve whatever you desire effortlessly. The daily pledge of success will activate your creative and productive mind; help guide your daily conduct to be one with the universe so the universe can be one with you. People will find you appealing to associate and or do business because you bring fulfillment to all. Remember, people will provide you the opportunity to acquire riches if you are a creative, productive unassuming force; and if your daily conduct brings credit to you and those with whom you associate. Say the daily pledge every morning to set a good footing for your day and every time before making a decision that involve others.

DR CONGO WARLORD GERMAIN KATANGA FOUND GUILTY AT ICC By MORDI.I.MICHAEL

Wealth accumulation process is like a light, if you hide it from others, you also hide it from yourself; share that which you know with all. DAILY PLEDGE Everything I am today and will become tomorrow, I owe to the influence of others. I will not say or do anything unless it creates positive desire, brings financial satisfaction and reward to all those with whom I come in daily contact. I ask for knowledge, skill, and wisdom to share my source of wealth with those who seek to know how. I continue to amass wealth daily, and I continue to share my source of income with every man or woman who needs answers.

I am grateful for the gift

Katanga, who was transferred to The Hague by the Congolese authorities in 2007, had denied the charges. The fighting in Ituri, which broke out in 1999 and continued until 2003, started as a struggle for control of land and resources. But it escalated into an inter-ethnic conflict, exacerbated by the presence of Uganda troops, that killed an estimated 50,000 people. ‘Shot while sleeping’ Katanga was convicted of being an accessory to an attack on Bogoro that took place on 24 February 2003, killing more than 200 people.

Home truths He was found guilty of complicity in the 2003 massacre of villagers in the gold-rich Ituri province of north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Time for peace Too rich for its own good He becomes just the second person to be convicted by the court since it was set up in The Hague in 2002. Q&A: Who are the M23? He would have been the first convicted of sexual crimes.

According to the prosecution, the attack happened early in the morning and some villagers were shot while they slept, while others were cut up with machetes to save bullets. Without the “supply of weapons... commanders would not have been able to carry out the attack with such efficiency,” said presiding judge Bruno Cotte. At the time Katanga was 24 years old and the alleged commander of the Patriotic Resistance Force of Ituri (FRPI), which had the support of the Lendu ethnic group.

Germain Katanga’s ICC charges Convicted of accessory to one crime against humanity (murder) and four war crimes (murder, attacking a civilian population, destruction of property and pillaging)

The judges found that women who survived the massacre had been raped or kept as sex slaves but they did not find enough evidence to convict Katanga of carrying out these crimes.

In a majority verdict, the judges said he had helped plan the attack, and procure the weapons used, but they acquitted him of direct involvement.

Another person was charged by the ICC in connection with the Bogoro attack.

He was also cleared of using child soldiers.

The International Criminal Court has found Congo militia leader Germain Katanga guilty of war crimes but acquitted him of sexual offences. DR Congo Seeks Democracy

Oh! Divine providence, the supreme and infinite intelligence endow me with humility to serve all with dignity, admiration, and affection all the days of my life.

The prosecution said that as the FRPI’s leader, he was to blame for the atrocities committed by his fighters against the villagers from the Hema ethnic group.

Acquitted of one crime against humanity (sexual slavery) and threecounts of war crimes (using child soldiers, sexual slavery, rape)

The court acquitted Germain Katanga of direct involvement in the 2003 massacre

of financial freedom, sound health, and the ability to enrich the life of others.

Q&A: International Criminal Court In total, he was convicted of being an accessory to four counts of war crimes and one crime against humanity. Will Africa pull out of the ICC? Will trials bring peace to Ituri? He will be sentenced at a future hearing. ICC prosecutors at The Hague say the assault was designed to “wipe out” the entire strategically important village, which is close to the Ugandan border.

But in December 2012 Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui was acquitted as judges found there was insufficient evidence to show that he was the commander of National Integrationist Front (FNI), which also took part in the raid. The BBC’s Maud Jullien in DR Congo says Katanga was known to his men as “Simba”, meaning lion. Those who knew him describe him as a discreet man but ruthless on the battlefield, she says. After the end of the Ituri conflict, peace deals were signed and Katanga was given a position in the Congolese army. But a year after joining the military he was imprisoned for bad behaviour and was still in prison when the ICC issued its arrest warrant for him. His is one of the longest-running cases at the ICC. In July 2012, Thomas Lubanga, a rival militia leader in Ituri, was sentenced to 14 years in jail by the ICC for recruiting and using child soldiers.
