Update On IOM Project Theft Allegation Made From Former Asylum Seeker

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) was successful enough to secure the funding from the EU to drive the GIVE Project which was alleged to be a project stolen from Mr. Alpha Gassama, a former asylum-seeker and the individual behind iVosta project. Volunteer Ireland which is one of IOM’s volunteer agency and partnering organization is trying to play double standard in the current ruckus surrounding IOM.

It is very critical to note that before the recent conference organized by Dublin City North Volunteer Centre on 28th February, 2012, Alpha Gassama was approached by Dublin City North Volunteer Centre to assist in organizing the conference captioned ‘Active Migrant Project Fair’ at the Mansion House in Dublin. The centre benefited immensely from Gassama’s expertise to assist the new Managing Director Ms. Kasia Zukowska. Gassama was selected to be part of the organizing team a month in advance of the event and he was asked to give a speech during the conference as being an immigrant and exemplary volunteer for years. The agenda of the conference

comprised of key guest speakers, Alpha Gassama and Dil Wickremasinghe but the agenda given to Gassama was different to the other participant, Kasia Zukowska. Mr. Gassama was pressurized to forward his speech weeks in advance of the conference. Gassama was later shocked and surprised to see Mr. Itayi Iviriri, Project Manager of

GIVE project present at the conference because he wasn’t initially selected as a guest speaker neither were the rest of the participants aware that he was to make any speech. Gassama was also surprised how Iviriri was fused in the already selected list of guest speakers and how Iviriri was also slated to give a speech specifically about IOM and did not make any mention of GIVE project.

The conference was well attended

and successful and also appreciations were given by the organizer - Dublin City North Volunteer Centre. A couple of weeks later, after the conference, Gassama visited Volunteer Ireland and was received by Kasia Zukowska in her office. During the meeting, Zukowska tried to discourage Gassama, to ditch iVosta project and he demanded to know from Zukowska why he should drop iVosta project? , Zukowska said. After this meeting, Zukowska continued to be very critical on iVosta.

During AfricaWorld Newspaper investigation, the correspondent discovered that the conference of 28th February, 2012 that Alpha was selected as a guest speaker, the speech he gave and the photographs that were taken and

Gassama found out that the same speech that he previously delivered 8 months earlier was used by Itayi Ivriri to launch GIVE project in the same Mansion House in Dublin on 17th October 2013. Gassama did not receive any invitation to the launch.

A fricaWorld Newspaper correspondent also found out that Mr. Itayi Iviriri knew Alpha Gassama very well when the allegation was made but during AfricaWorld correspondent’s telephone conversation with Iviriri, he strongly denied knowing Gasssama and he further maintained that he has no knowledge about iVosta project. AfricaWorld Newspaper can also authoritatively confirm that after the correspondent’s brief telephone interview with Iviriri, he immediately called Alpha Gassama and arranged for a meeting with him at The Gresham Hotel which was then slated for the 10th January, 2014. T he meeting held between

iVosta staff and Volunteer Ireland in Costa Cafe located on College Green/Dame Street attended by Yvonne McKenna, (CEO of Volunteer Ireland) and three others couldn’t change anything. During the meeting, Alpha Gassama

could be one of such example of how some organizations use and exploit volunteers and when such organizations find volunteers no longer useful, they tactically ditch or trash them. When one visualizes issues surrounding such organizations that are reliant on volunteers, it is always very appalling.

In further response to the recent unfounded and completely false allegations made by Mr. Alpha Gassama, Ms. Theodora Sutter who is the current IOM Chief of Mission in Ireland said: “The International Organisation for Migration’s integration initiative which is the Grassroots Integration through Volunteering Experiences (GIVE) project was not copied from the project called iVosta. IOM unequivocally dismissed the allegation as being completely unfounded and without merit or any basis in fact or truth. Despite having met with Mr. Alpha Gassama after he made his allegations, IOM are still unclear as to why he has pursued this course of action despite the tenuous and unsubstantiated nature of his claims, she said.

T he concept of migrants volunteering in their new communities as a vehicle of enhancing and promoting their integration is not at all unique and in fact, there have been several programmes of this nature here in Ireland and elsewhere. From the very onset, the IOM has been clear that the GIVE project is not about reinventing the wheel, but rather complementing the long standing and tremendously valuable work being undertaken by their national volunteer agency partners across the four project participating

countries (Ireland, Austria, the Netherlands and the UK) in engaging with migrants who seek to integrate through volunteering and active citizenship in their local communities. In fact, the Volunteer Agency partners in the Netherlands and the UK have many years of experience running these kinds of programmes and the learning from that experience has impacted very positively on migrant volunteerism in Ireland.

It is also very important to note that their GIVE project national volunteer agency partner in Ireland, Volunteer Ireland (previously Volunteering Ireland before 2011 merger with Volunteer Centres Ireland) has always maintained a strong ethos of promoting volunteerism amongst migrant communities from the very beginning. Based on the Dutch volunteer model, which had a significant multiculturalism, having historically been a crucial part of their volunteering services, Volunteer Ireland specifically introduced various social inclusion initiatives such as Opportunity Knocks (2004) and Diversify (2006) as part of their volunteer programmes, which would have targeted migrants, amongst others. D espite

the unfounded allegations, IOM wishes those behind the iVosta initiative well and they sincerely hope that, ultimately, both the GIVE project and the iVosta initiative meet the needs of migrants who seek and are committed, to integrating into their new communities through volunteering and active citizenship”, she concluded.

INTRODUCING SENEGAL

Couched between the arid desert lands in Northern Senegal and lush tropical forests in the south, this country boasts a stunning array of sights, sounds and flavours. The capital Dakar alone hands you the country in a capsule. Perched on the tip of a beach-lined peninsula, this dizzying city is composed elegance and street hustle all rolled into one. The busy streets, vibrant markets and glittering nightlife will easily draw you into their relentless rhythm, but the escape route is always open – be it to the meditative calm of the historical Île de Gorée or the golden sands of Yoff and N’Gor. And if Dakar’s sensory overload really gets too much, architecturally beautiful SaintLouis, the first French settlement in West Africa, boasts a vibrant urban culture without the innercity bustle. Most visitors head to Senegal for its beaches, and for good reason. North and south of Dakar, wide strips of white sand invite swimming and sunbathing, whether in the built-up resort zones, where a lazy day at the beach can be followed by a cocktail trail at night, or in one of the coast’s charming fishing villages, the beaches of which are dotted with hundreds of colourful wooden pirogues. At the deltas of the Casamanceand Saloum Rivers, the coastline is broken up into a maze of thick mangroves, tiny creeks, wide lagoons and shimmering plains. A pirogue trip through these striking zones reveals hundreds of bird species, from the gleaming wings of tiny kingfishers to the proud poise of pink flamingos. Whether you want to mingle with the trendsetters of urban Africa, or be alone with your thoughts and the sounds of nature – Senegal is the place to be.

SAMORA MACHEL “International solidarity is not an act of charity, its objective is to aid the development of humanity.” On the 19th October 1986, a bright star on the firmament of Africa dimmed. It went to sleep on it’s own but involuntarily, life was snuffed out. One of Africa’s greatest, Samora Machel died when his plane crashed into a hillside in South Africa. Although the complicity of South Africa was denied, instead pointing to pilot error. However, events and investigations have indicated that the Apartheid regime sent its Special Forces to shoot down President Machel’s aircraft. Samora Machel breathed first as a new born on 29th September, 1933, in Gaza province in the south of Mozambique. Like most of his generation, Samora grew up in an agricultural village and attended elementary school run by missionary authorities. He completed the fourth class-the prerequisite certificate for any higher education. Ambitious and hardworking, Samora met a hurdle in lack of funds to pursue higher education in nursing which he aspired. However, to secure the tuition fees to pay for formal training at the Miguel Bombarda Hospital in Lourenco Marques (Maputo), he took a job working as an assistant in the hospital. This afforded him enough money to continue his education at night school. Samora worked at the hospital until he left the country to join the nationalist struggle. Samora Machel began his political journey in the hospital of Lourenço Marques where he led protests against the authorities for paying black nurses less than whites. In one of his interviews, he told a reporter how bad medical treatment

was for Mozambique’s poor, “The rich man’s dog gets more in the way of vaccination, medicine and medical care than do the workers upon whom the rich man’s wealth is built.” In 1962 Machel joined the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) which set out to struggle for an independent Mozambique. He received military training in 1963 in Algeria, and returned in 1964 to lead FRELIMO’s first guerilla attack against the Portuguese in northern Mozambique.

I PLACED A CURSE ON MY BOYFRIEND AND NOW HE WANTED ME TO RELEASE HIM It all started in 2002 when I gained employment in an organisation. And, in the course of duty, I got very close to a guy named Michael. I later got to know we lived in the same area and since he had a car, he was always taking me home.

her, the woman pounced on me and tore my shirt to shreds. She started shouting, ha (Michael, I will destroy you).

She told me - You, you want to come and reap where you didn’t sow? When he was living in a room, I was with him and now In 2003, we still shared the closeness and that he lives in a room and a parlor, I want I was beginning to get fond of him. I lost to enjoy isn’t it? In my mind I thought, so one of my parents and he attended the funeral room and parlor is enjoyment, oh, yeah? alongside most of my bosses. It was after After the drama, I couldn’t go home that the burial he told me he loved me and would want to have a relationship with me. I asked night cos it was too late. First thing in the morning, they started fighting again and I him if he was single and he said yes. I visited his home one day and saw some had to quietly leave for my house. I got home greeting cards from a certain Jennifer and and my mum wondered why my shirt was when I asked, he said she was his ex. I asked torn. I lied to her cos I didn’t want her to him why he didn’t get rid of the cards and worry. he said he just didn’t think it was necessary. The third day after the incident, Jennifer On a Sunday morning, I intentionally stormed my office, shouting, where is that visited his home cos I knew he would be in husband snatcher? Where is Vera? Husband church. I interviewed two of his neighbours snatcher oshi? Ashawo, prostitute? Before and they told me he was indeed single. They I knew it, a crowd had gathered and they said he used to have a lady but it’s been ages had to ask her what her problem was. She since they saw her and when they asked him, told them she was Michael’s fiancee and I he said they’ve broken up. I was happy, am dragging him with her. thanked them and left. We started a relationship in March and I was happy cos I already had feelings for him. After three months, he came to visit my mum and told her of his intentions to marry me. My mum said no problem and gave him her blessings. I had already told her about him and she knew I was happy with him. Imagine my surprise when I received a call from a woman in July and she said she wanted to speak with my guy. I asked who she was and she said she was his sister who just came in from Calabar. I was happy and told her I was yet to get to the office, but I will let him know once I arrive the office. I got to the office and excitedly told Michael his sister called me. He was surprised and asked to see the number. When he did, he said, but this is Jennifer’s number (his ex). I said, really? I called the number again and she said I should give Michael the phone. I handed the phone to him and he shouted, why did you call this number? I went to my cubicle and my phone rang again. Jennifer told me, don’t think you have found a husband, Michael is my fiancee and in fact, I am 7 months pregnant for him. I felt as if my world would collapse. I couldn’t concentrate and when it was time for us to go home, I told him what Jennifer said. He said it wasn’t true and I told him, true or not, I am going to your house this night. He didn’t want me to follow him home, but I was adamant. We got to his house and I saw a heavily pregnant woman. Immediately he barged into his house, he started beating her. He beat her and rained blows on her tummy. I’m sure if that pregnancy wasn’t heavy, she would have lost the pregnancy. After beating

You know my story with this guy called Michael. You know what others don’t know. If it is true I knew about Jennifer and still insisted on dating Michael, keep quiet about my issue, but if Michael lied against me, I want you to fight for me. I commit Michael, Jennifer and me into Your hands. With that, I went back inside the house, still crying. Michael later resigned cos my male bosses were really on his case. They told him that if he could say I enticed him with gifts and money, then, he is not fit to be called a man. He had to resign when he could no longer bear the shame. On the other hand, I am still with the organisation and that singular case endeared lots of my bosses to me. They really showed me lots of care. All these happened in 2003.

Fast forward to 2013, I received a call and it was from Michael. I was shocked and he told me he decided to call just to say hi. I was surprised to hear from him and I spoke with him warmly. 10 years is a long time to keep grudges I told myself. He asked for my BB pin and I gave him. Once in a while he says hi and I reply. I was surprised when in September last year, he pinged me and My bosses had to tell her to go home and told me he needed to speak with me and it settle with her fiancee and stop disgracing wasn’t a phone thing. herself in public. I told my bosses so you want to make amends and still want I had nothing to say, but one thing I know your wife and my bosses to think I am all is that even if it takes ten years, we are all you said I was. I laugh. I left him hanging going to sit down again and Michael would and went home. confess he lied against me. With that, I stood up and walked out of the room. In October last year, I celebrated my birthday and one of my bosses, who works When I arrived home that night, I ate my in a similar organisation as the one I work with, called to wish me a happy birthday.

He said he would like to take me and my friends out for a drink or two at the weekend. I agreed and during the weekend, he took us out. We were eating cat fish pepper soup when his phone rang. I heard him sigh and say, na wah o, what is this again? When he dropped, he started a story about a certain Michael in his office. He said the man is so effective, but seems bad luck keeps following him. The name Michael caught my fancy and I asked for his surname. Lo and behold, it was the same Michael I dated. I was curious and asked him for more details. He said anytime anything good is about to happen to Michael, something happens and someone else is giving the goodies instead. He said the latest one is the issue of a car he personally approved. He said the boss who is supposed to sign the final approval said he doesn’t want Michael to have the car, instead he gave it to someone else who was lower in rank to him. He said lots of good things that have evaded Michael. I didn’t tell him anything, I just kept quiet. Last week, Michael sent me a mail and sent a text to my phone that I should check my mail. In the mail he said: Vera, continue to play God over my life. I know I made a mistake, why can’t you just forgive me? Why must you insist I go back to that office and confess my mistakes? What’s the big deal in forgiving me? We are fasting and praying in my church and one of the prophets that was invited told me to come and apologise to you and that you need to bless me to enable me move forward in life. Before this, I have been having dreams of someone asking me to come and beg you. Please, forgive me, but don’t tell me to go back to that office. Let’s bury the hatchet once and for all. I know you have challenges and I know you are still unmarried. What if this is because you have refused to bless me? Why don’t you forgive and bless me and see if God won’t turn your story around? Now dear readers, this is where AfricaWorld Agony Corner needs your advice. God knows that Vera has forgiven Michael, but why can’t he just go back to the office and tell his bosses he lied against Vera 10 years ago? What’s the big deal in it? At the same time, Vera don’t want to play God over anyone’s life. Is Vera playing God by insisting Michael goes back to tell the truth?

YEMEN Yemen’s president on Monday formally approved turning the country into a federal state, giving the south more autonomy. But the move was immediately rejected by some southerners who insist on a separate state. Demands by southern separatists to restore the state that merged with North Yemen in 1990 had delayed an agreement on broad political reforms ahead of general elections. Under the new system approved by President Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi, Yemen will be split into six regions, two in the south and four in the north, according to the state news agency Saba. Some southerners fear that having several regions will dilute their authority and deprive them of control over important areas where some of Yemen’s oil reserves are found. The federalism plan will be included in a new constitution that will be put to a vote in a national referendum. Yemen is also facing challenges from Islamist militants and a northern rebellion.

All those wasted hours Misconceptions exist about the exercising and doing little about my relationship between weight loss, diet diet? Oh well, there was still time to and exercise and it is necessary that the importance of each component is clarified in today’s article. Overweight individuals usually believe that the number of hours spent exercising is directly proportional to the amount of weight lost over time? What do you think? True or false? What role does diet play? The question remains whether diet or exercise is more important and how much of each should you do to successfully lose weight and maintain weight loss over a long time, possibly for life. Initially when I started my journey, I wanted to exercise every second of the day, in fact I was obsessed with exercise so much that I was exercising at least six times each week, heading quickly for a burn out and physical exhaustion, Oh dear!!!

A STEP FURTHER IN THE SMARTWATCH TECHNOLOGY REVIEWED

By Uchenna Onyenagubo

The last edition of Tech_ Pilot introduced the smartwatch evolution, this time, more details regarding the rapid development will be provided. The background of the new innovation started last week reveals that the smartwatch has gained appreciation from consumers, and this has lead major giants in the industry reasons t for further improvement. The “i’m watch” is indeed an achievement, providing accessories features to the mobile device. It’s a smart way

of living, userfriendly with B l u e t o o t h tethering (Internet s h a r i n g ) connection that allows you to connect many phones including, Android, iOS and Blackberry. The computer history has evolved from heavy piece of equipment that can fit into a large square-meter room to pocket devices and NOW, the age of wearing them has arrived. This Italian product has the potential to be the ultimate smart watch with a unique Android UI (User Interface), a hands-free call function, and the ability to display emails, Facebook messages and tweets right on your wrist. This Italian magic has finally hit American shores, although in short supply. Describing itself the “ t h e w o r l d ’s ’ f i r s t r e a l smartwatch. The design is great and the idea is classic but not sure of its functionality performance rate, like any other new

innovation, it will experience some early issues and require improvement with time. This device will rely solely on your usual mobile device; the smartwatch cannot install apps or receive firmware and software updates. Therefore, if tethering is not offered as a standard feature by your cellular service provider, you need to subscribe to a tethering plan (mobile data). The most enticing feature of the “i’m watch”, is the ability to make and receive calls from the watch itself. Unfortunately, sound quality is so bad on the watch that this feature is completely unusable. In fact, the feature might as well go off the list entirely. From experience it is normal for consumers to rate and review new innovation in the industry, which serves as feedback to manufacturers. This creates competition and avenue for interested rival to utilise the opportunity and develop on the short comings. Apple has been rumoured to be working on its “iWatch” smart watch for a while now, but the company is now accelerating work to meet the challenging demand. Apple has already started work on trademarking the name in a number of countries. At the moment, we are not sure what the “iWatch” will look like but many speculations are available

online with a graphic representation of the coming “ i Wa t c h ” . D u e t o t h e technological nature of the

smartwatch as an accessory device, the “iWatch” will serve as an accessory to the iPhone and other iOS devices, giving users easy at-a-glance access to common functions without having to take their larger

devices out of their pockets or bags. It should also incorporate a number of its own sensors and software features to help stand on its own as a must-have device for users. There are speculations that the “iWatch” could serve as a control device for home automation which is indeed the future technology. Considering the nature of the smartwatch technology, it might attract health related

issues. The Sensors and biometrics are said to play a key role in the “iWatch”. Apple is said to have made multiple health-related hires in the past year, snapping up people with expertise in both health sensors and other mobile health devices to join its smart watch team. In the research, it is clear that there are indications that the “iWatch” may include the ability to measure health-related metrics like glucose levels, heart rate, and movement. Among other features, the “iWatch” will also integrate with the iPhone and other iOS devices, allowing users to check caller ID, place calls, and access maps as an accessory to the larger devices, and it may also include wireless charging capabilities, allowing the speculated device’s 100mAh battery to charge from up to a meter away.
