Urania: threshold to a new urban condition or pre-modern nostalgia?

The cities we design and build are based on a model reproduced ad nauseum without being reevaluated in terms of the constantly varying human needs. At the same time contemporary architectural theory and practice is facing back towards the reuse, renovation or/and inspiration by past forms. Considering however how much our culture/society differs from the past, one would be intrigued about the reasons why we are nonetheless related and attracted to them. Beside the purely historic reasons, we're connected to these forms through the framework of (re)finding/ (re)forming/ (re)sculpting our identity - with a slight touch of nostalgia. Unquestionably the western culture' s subject feels the need to escape to something different: different conditions, civilizations, other eras, as a break from the everyday life. Tourist landscapes, vacation lands as well as the feeling one has returning home, stand as a cause for this project. In his way back to reality, man feels a distinct nostalgia -not only regarding the memories that simmer in his mind but mostly because of the all-encompassing feeling of something being constantly absent. Through the ordinary moments of the mundane everyday life emerge all the exceptional feelings, all the experiences one derives from the light and carefree attitude when rambling on the foreign landscapes or enjoying a siesta under the sun. Through this reverie comes the question how all these exceptional feelings can return back to the life we are living. How can everyday life in today's society be given a meaning again?

Intention of this project is to become a threshold towards a new model of living. A threshold as a wishing passage to something different; material scenes, representative etc., opening new areas of action, thought and possibilities, questioning upon and rearranging the social reality. The design/planning suggests a model of living for the modern man and his need to getaway to other realities, invoking the senses of daydreaming, carelessness and freedom. An anthropocentric model, designed for humans, their dimensions and needs. The built environment manifests itself by being placed on the landscape and is viewed as a setting. A setting, a scenery that is coming to life through the movements and notations of the people inhabiting the settlement. The spaces and houses concern the way through which the everyday life itself is expressed, arranged, organized, regarding both its foundation and its various modalities. If something today is undoubtedly lost, that would be the mere sacramental nature of man and his/her social life, the poetic coloring of the interpretation of all, the world as aesthetic appearance. The lost interiority/sanctity returns to the forefront and begets worth again, through a kind of magic realism. The water, the repeated stairways, the various geographical levels and the consecutive ascents and descents, function as a gate towards the sacred world – the world beyond material reality.

Lorem ipsum
Our culture would never have existed if it wasn’t for its previous ones; in a way, it was its predecessors who conceived and defined it, unfolding its life’s cycle. However, it appears we are having an ambiguous relationship with time, neurotically facing the Past and the Future, while perceiving the Present as a subcultural version of things. In a constant seeking for the truest version of their civilization, the modern Greeks (mis)appropriate a wide, even ambiguous, spectrum of styles. The capacity of being “greek” (referring to an object, a form, a culture) can be named here, naively, as “greekness”. Greekness often appears as something quite fluid and, in some way, very adapting. At least since the Greek Liberation, it is, ideologically, shifting from “folkness” to a “classic idealism”, from “traditional” to a Europeanized civilization. The current research is studying the term of collective memory (or its ideological conception) as a national pride’s regulator, while the Greek Liberation is being conceived as a nodal point on Hellenism’s conception. For that reason, the definition of the national is here a search medium of the national forms, as part of the national things in general. How are the traces of the past letting us claim that they consist our own, personal past, and how do we fantasize or build our identity using them? The bodies of power who put into practice the so-called memory politics are influencing our personal view of what is and what should Greece be; advertising also being considered as one of these politics. The modern greek dilemmas and cultural dualisms are basically viewed as culture producers and also a fact of cultural uncertainty. Eventually, though, what forms our current culture is the current image of it; something that we would have realized if we were not being consumed by praising controversial legacies.

understanding and converting the touristic experience
How is a tourist behaving? Which is the relationship between him and his surroundings? What are the living conditions that one seeks when on vacation? How is he connecting with the places that he visits? What role do the landscapes take when escaping the city life? Is letting go of the usual luxuries making us more humans -the feeling that we are so small surrounded by the huge mountains, the way we feel unprotected under the burning sunlights. In this island the relationship with the landscape and the topography is required for one to live, to survive. As the visitor arrives by boat at the pier, a pavilion reveals itself behind the sand dune. The interior is full of kits, including everything one finds to survive on this island. The main living (canopied) areas provide all the shading that one needs, enjoys under the intense meditarranean sunlight. The first one surrounded [hugged] by the hills, accommodates the camping [sleeping] area. The second one, that opens up to the sea view, is provided for the everyday practices. It also contains a rammed earth building for the basic everyday needs [open kitchen, WC, toilets]. Up in the hills the second [rammed earth] building of the island exists, the baths. The camper there is able, through the minimal design, to enjoy the silence and the dark space, as an exception of the sunburnt landscape. A cistern is to provide the baths with recycled water. One can also discover more, smaller, structures which are provided for laying on the beach and experience the landscape, such as the column forest, the pier, the showering place.

this project aims to create temporary volunteering communities.
The visitors are people interesting in moving to Delphi and enjoying volunteer in the agricultural olive tree lands. Through manual labor practices, humans are exploring the landscapes through the physical movements and reaching a spiritual contemplation level. The design is divided into three parts: The lands, which are offered for working and getting in touch with nature and experience the landscape through the movement of the body. The tower comprehends the community practices of everyday life. [eating, cleaning, getting in contact with others, etc.] The bridge concludes the cells, each one for every visitor to immerse himself in seclusion getting in touch with his thoughts and connecting with his own soul.

years after now water will take over coastal cities.
Buildings that now exist will be engulfed by the ocean, Missolonghi will become the lagoon's continuity. The project aims to design a museum in the salt pans of Missolonghi. A landscape that seems out of this world, where blank space takes the helm with its abstraction and the removal of all the visible and environmental noises. A museum comes into being in accordance with the abstract landscape engravings. It is separated into two buildings, the linear one that contains all the museum's needs [reception, shop, cafe, library, gallery], which also connects the inner with the outer space. All of the facilities are hidden inside the thickness of the walls. The shape of them is formed in such a way to play around with the perspective, transforming the view to the visitor's eye and creating passages from the interior to the exterior space, from the ground level to upper ones. The linear building leads to the squared hall of salt. There the scale changes immediately. The visitor is headed from dark to light as he moves from the underground levels to the upper ones and out. In this secretive atmosphere human plays the second role as all the attention is commanded to the salt mounds, placed in the center of the square.

an old family house is converted into a bed and breakfast
In a small village on the mountains an abandoned, three levels, family house exists. After the restoration of its structrure and the addition of new facilities, the building is able to have life within it again. For this porpuse, a multi level garden, a bath, a tower and a staircase are added to the main building. The materials used, to add up with the stone walls of the house, are concrete and oxidized copper. The added concrete tower contains the three levels kitchen and breakfast/ dining area of the hotel.
