Peindre avec l’Esprit Most artists feel a connection with Spirit on a very deep level. Painter Jackson Pollack said, “The painting has a life of its own, I try to let it come through”. This is essentially the definition of painting with the Spirit. It’s about allowing the Spirit to guide us in a creative direction by becoming a receptive channel. It’s the ultimate exercise in relaxing and being completely open and ready to receive a gift from the Spirit. By painting like this, the focus is on the process and not on the outcome. It’s difficult to imagine investing in this idea to the point of being willing to burn the painting upon completion; but that is the state of mind needed to fully let go of controlling the end result.

Ceci est l’essence de la déf inition de peindre avec l’Esprit. Il s’agit de permettre à l’Esprit de nous guider dans une direction créative en devenant un canal. C’est l’exercice ultime de détente et d’être complètement ouver t et prêt à recevoir un cadeau de l’Esprit. En peignant comme cela, l’accent est mis sur le processus et non sur le résultat. Il est diff icile d’imaginer pousser cette idée au point d’être prêt à brûler le tableau f inal, mais c’est l’état d’esprit nécessaire pour abandonner le contrôle sur le résultat.

We are born with a unique kind of creative expression and our mission is to discover how to nurture those talents and share them with the world. Painting with the Spirit is about experimenting like a child with a curious and playful attitude where there is no room for analyzing, comparisons or judgments. Many of us are cut off from this playfulness as adults because of various reasons. Our society feeds us the message that we must be productive and efficient, which is incongruent with the process of intuitive creation. This approach is about allowing a sort of magic to unfold without force and allowing whatever emotions to flow onto the canvas.

Nous sommes tous nés avec une expression créative unique et notre mission est de découvrir comment la nourrir et la partager avec le monde. Peindre avec l’Esprit, c’est expérimenter comme un enfant, avec une attitude curieuse et espiègle, où il n’y a pas de place pour analyse, comparaison ou jugement. Adulte, nous sommes souvent coupé de cette spontanéité pour diverses raisons. Notre société nous dit que nous devons être productifs et efficaces, ce qui est incompatible avec le processus de création. Cette approche ouvre la voie à une sorte de magie qui se fait sans forcer pour laisser s’exprimer sur la toile toutes les émotions qui émergent.

dancing, singing, playing music or simply walking quietly. Once we know this special place, we use it to express ourselves through any creative process. I consider my art to be a spiritual practice as well as a tool for self-discovery. Each stroke is like an intention or prayer so that as the painting unfolds in all its movement, color and texture, I infuse this work with energy on a subtle level. My paintings can be described as spiritual landscapes; my work is fuel for the vitality of the inner life. Others can look at this art and feel they know this place, too. Whatever the experience brought to the canvas, nightmare or beautiful dream, alchemy occurs that transforms the art into a simple offering, an authentic gift to the universe. Painting with the Spirit is a journey and not a destination. This path is different for each person. There are no specific techniques, mistakes or accidents. It’s about living in the present moment and discovering what message can be revealed here. It’s mystery transformed into miracle through self-expression without expectations. Painting with the Spirit is a kind of sacred dance with grace. •

Chaque trace de couleur devient un souhait ou une prière af in qu’alors que le tableau se révèle dans toute sa dimension, ses couleurs et sa matière, je l’infuse d’énergie à un niveau très subtil. Mes tableaux peuvent être décrits comme des paysages spirituels, mon travail étant alimenté par la vitalité de ma vie intérieure. D’autres peuvent alors regarder et sentir qu’ils connaissent eux aussi ces lieux. Quelle que soit l’expérience por tée sur la toile, cauchemar ou beau rêve, une alchimie se produit qui transforme l’ar t en une offrande, un authentique don à l’univers. Peindre avec l’Esprit est un chemin et non une destination. Celui-ci est différent pour chacun. Il n’y a pas de technique spécifique, d’erreur ou d’accident. Il s’agit de vivre dans le moment présent et de découvrir quel message peut être révélé ici et maintenant. C’est un mystère transformé en miracle par une expression sans attentes. Peindre avec l’Esprit est une sorte de danse sacrée avec la grâce. •

Voyage to India

Voyage en Inde India is fascinating, colorful and rich in contrasts. As part of a mission trip to Deep Griha Society, an NGO (www.deepgriha.org) in the city of Pune, my purpose was to use art to meet the basic human need for beauty, meaning and creative expression with underprivileged women and children. Through the use of movement and color, this ‘‘Dancing-Painting’’ project evolved into a practice of self-empowerment, where Indians taught me Bollywood dancing, and I, in turn, invited them to express their feelings of joy, expectations, fear, etc. onto canvas as a way of “letting go” of their emotions. Not only does this process help us feel lighter, but often leads to solutions. It is a physical way to express faith and trust that a higher power knows what to do with our happiness or our burdens.

L’Inde est fascinante, colorée et riche en contrastes. Dans le cadre d’une mission pour l’ONG Deep Griha Society (www.deepgriha.org) dans la ville de Pune, mon but était d’utiliser l’art pour répondre au besoin humain fondamental pour de la beauté, du sens et de l’expression créative, avec des femmes et des enfants défavorisés. À travers l’utilisation de mouvements et de couleurs, ce projet “Danse-Peinture” a évolué vers une pratique d’auto-émancipation où les Indiens m’ont appris la danse Bollywood, et moi, à mon tour, les ai invités à exprimer leurs sentiments de joie, attentes, peurs, etc. sur la toile, comme un moyen de “lâcher” les émotions. Non seulement ce processus nous aide à nous sentir plus léger, mais souvent révèle des solutions. C’est un moyen physique pour exprimer foi et confiance dans une puissance supérieure qui sait quoi faire avec nos joies et nos fardeaux.

Creativity is prayer in whatever form. By dancing together in India we put prayer in motion and continued dancing on the canvas with each stroke of color. By using this process, we hurdled the barriers of culture, creed and religion to speak the universal language of acceptance and opened up our hearts to each other. Each painting represents a voyage that tells a story and often connects us with our spirituality. When art becomes a bridge that connects us together, we experience a joy that is remarkably transformative, a coming home.

La créativité est prière, quelle que soit la forme utilisée. En dansant ensemble, nous avons mis la prière en mouvement et l’avons prolongée sur la toile par chaque geste de couleur. En utilisant ce procédé, nous abattions les barrières de culture, croyance et religion pour parler un langage universel d’acceptation et ouvrir nos cœurs à l’autre. Chaque tableau représente un voyage qui raconte une histoire et souvent nous relie à notre spiritualité. Quand l’art devient un pont, nous éprouvons une joie qui est étonnamment transformante, un retour à l’origine.

The four paintings created during this experience were completed in my Paris studio. These paintings are featured at the beginning of this catalogue as well as other large works created using the same approach. •

De cette rencontre sont ainsi nés quatre tableaux que j’ai finalisés dans mon atelier parisien. Ils sont présentés dans les premières pages de ce catalogue avec d’autres oeuvres de grande taille utilisant la même approche. •

Colors and smiles appear everywhere in India, nevertheless, the poverty is omnipresent. Deep Griha Society does amazing work in Pune to help the underprivileged. Les couleurs et les sourires sont par tout en Inde, mais la misère est néanmoins omniprésente. Deep Griha Society fait un travail formidable à Pune pour aider les plus démunis.

Her own rebirth

Renaissance à soi-même On her journey, literally and figuratively, Monica Bassett creates paintings in motion, as if engraving them with a mark of her intimate, expatriate experience. Fragments of a motionless journey, to paraphrase Fernando Pessoa, offers the viewer’s eyes vivid impressions which pass through the work of an American artist who arrived in Paris in 1990 and who threw herself headlong into painting. At thirty, Monica Bassett left behind her native Chicago and a career with a California company to become an artist in a new city where the blank page waited to be written. Self-taught, for her, the act of painting became a tool for self-discovery, an authentic and fruitful heuristic approach that draws its strength from the process and practice rather than the knowledge. So, her pictorial vocabulary is one of an intuitive art that follows the rhythm of her respiration and exudes a breath of life. The tree was a natural choice as a recurring theme in her early work. Fragments d’un voyage immobile, s’il fallait paraphraser Fernando Pessoa, ainsi se donnent au regard les forces vives qui traversent l’œuvre de l’artiste. À trente ans, Monica Bassett laisse derrière elle son Chicago natal ainsi qu’une carrière dans une société californienne pour se faire peintre dans une ville nouvelle où la partition vierge et inconnue restait tout entière à composer. Autodidacte, l’acte de peindre répond alors à ses yeux à un principe de connaissance de soi, à une démarche heuristique féconde et sincère qui puise sa sève dans le processus et la pratique plutôt que dans le savoir. Aussi, son vocabulaire pictural est-il celui d’un art intuitif qui épouse le rythme de sa respiration et exsude un souff le de vie. L’arbre s’est tout naturellement imposé à ses débuts comme motif récurrent de son œuvre. Ses acryliques, nimbées d’or et d’argent, draguent leur énergie depuis les racines d’une terre universelle rappelant le thème biblique de l’Arbre de vie, triomphe absolu de l’immortalité. Monica Bassett a en effet choisi son camp et c’est résolument du côté de la vie qu’elle verse. En témoignent les récentes peintures acryliques de grand format réalisées en Inde dans le cadre du projet “Danse-Peinture”, mission humanitaire auprès de l’association Deep Griha Society, dont

biblical theme of the Tree of Life, the absolute triumph of immortality. Indeed, Monica Bassett made a choice and it is firmly on the side of life. This is evident from the creation of recent, large format acrylic paintings in India through the Dancing-Painting project during a humanitarian mission to the NGO, Deep Griha Society. It involved dancing then weaving emotions on canvas. Using introspection, the body’s intuitive guidance, shedding cold hard logic, it allows the paint to penetrate bone deep. Dance has indeed the ability to override the logical part of our brain to become more intuitive, almost wild and reptilian. With a burst of life, the women and children in Pune composed their inner landscape of joy, anger, surprise; the pure and raw emotions migrated the canvas to metamorphose it into living matter: visceral carmine, black bile, Baudelairian spleen or rosy cheeks to form a contemporary painting of Hippocrates’s moods. In this Indian population, highly precarious and living in slums, were those who had never held a brush or palette knife between their fingers. One participant, moved to tears had the impression of flying... These raw emotions, archaic and primitive, were embraced and transposed in order to create four out of ten paintings exhibited and displayed in a style called lyrical abstraction influenced by the painter, Zao Wou Ki. From a solitary practice to a new collective dynamic, the artist found a new way to discover her inner self. Being open to others, was a way to open up and discover herself anew, and thus to touch others in a gesture of universal acceptance. Meditative and spiritual, the abstract paintings of Monica Bassett are deeply human and are offerings as an eternal rebirth to oneself. •

Se plonger en soi, gagner l’intuition du corps, larguer les amarres d’une logique froide et faire rentrer la peinture jusque dans la peau. La danse a en effet cette capacité de neutraliser une partie du cerveau et de le rendre plus intuitif, presque sauvage et reptilien. Dans un élan de vie, les femmes et enfants rencontrés à Pune ont ainsi composé leur paysage intérieur fait de joie, de colère, de surprise, les émotions pures et brutes migrant vers la toile et s’y métamorphosant en matière vivante ; viscères rougeoyant, bile noire, spleen baudelairien ou rose aux joues forment ainsi un tableau contemporain des humeurs d’Hippocrate. Cette population, éminemment précaire, vivant dans des bidonvilles, n’avait jamais eu un seul pinceau ou couteau à peindre entre les doigts. Une des participantes, émue aux larmes, a même conf ié avoir eu l’impression de s’envoler... Ces émotions premières, archaïques, primitives, saisies et transposées sur quatre des dix toiles exposées dans le parcours, aff ichent une abstraction lyrique inspirée de celle du peintre Zao Wou Ki. D’une pratique solitaire, l’artiste a ainsi trouvé dans cette nouvelle dynamique collective une autre façon de se rapprocher d’elle-même. S’ouvrir à l’autre, c’était s’ouvrir à soi et toucher du doigt l’homme dans son acception universelle. Méditative et spirituelle, l’abstraction de Monica Bassett est profondément humaniste et se présente comme une sempiternelle renaissance à soi-même. •
