Dear Valued Customers, As we wrap up the first quarter of 2015, we would like to take this opportunity to briefly share with you some of the most recent developments that we have successfully implemented in line with our continuous efforts to improve even further, particularly through our new ‘Quick Wins’ programme.

I firmly believe that with the concerted effort and resilience of everyone at Garuda Indonesia, and also with the support from all of you, our valued customers, business partners and stakeholders, we will continue to strive to progressively rebound and fly even higher in the years to come.

Recently, it has been noticeable that Garuda Indonesia has grown and evolved to a whole new level. With the foundation as a ‘Global Player’, which we were able to achieve through our ‘Quantum Leap’ strategy that we have implemented successfully over the last ten years, we are glad to inform you that in the early stages of 2015 we have made some significant improvements through various innovative programmes, and of course, the constant commitment and hard work from everyone here at Garuda Indonesia.

In the meantime, we are honoured to take part in the 60th-year Asian–African Conference Commemoration this April. Just like before, during the 50th-year Asian– African Conference Commemoration in 2005, Garuda Indonesia has been entrusted to fly in all of the delegates and heads of state from the numerous nations set to participate in this year’s Asian–African Conference Commemoration, which will be held in Bandung from April 19 to 24, 2015.

Some of the areas of performance that we have been able to advance include an increase in the number of passengers – up 15 per cent and 11 per cent for the months of January and February respectively in comparison to the same period last year – production capacity growth, increased passenger load factor, and a successful recorded profit for the month of February 2015.

We hope that with the support and cooperation of everyone involved, we will all be able to contribute positively and provide the best possible flight service for this historic occasion. Lastly, I would like to thank all of our loyal customers for your continued trust and support in Garuda Indonesia.

Dengan upaya dan tekad dari seluruh jajaran di Garuda Indonesia serta dukungan dari

Bapak, Ibu serta segenap mitra dan stakeholders Garuda Indonesia, maka secara bertahap kiranya kami akan dapat mengantarkan Garuda Indonesia rebound kembali. Sementara itu kami juga merasa terhormat bahwa Garuda Indonesia dapat menjadi bagian dari kegiatan Peringatan Konferensi Asia Afrika ke-60 yang dilaksanakan pada bulan April 2015 ini—dimana seperti yang kami laksanakan pada Peringatan Konferensi Asia Afrika ke-50 pada tahun 2005—Garuda Indonesia kembali mendapatkan kepercayaan dan kehormatan untuk menerbangkan para kepala negara dan delegasi dari berbagai negara yang akan mengikuti kegiatan Peringatan Konferensi Asia Afrika ke-60 di Bandung pada 19–24 April 2015. Kami mengharapkan dukungan dan kerja sama dari berbagai pihak, sehingga kami dapat melaksanakan kegiatan penerbangan yang memiliki makna dan nilai sejarah tersebut dengan sebaik-baiknya. Born in Jakarta, Juliana spent her formative years in Singapore and Melbourne before returning home to start a career in journalism. She counts driving through the Uyghur country in Xinjiang, western China, as one of her most memorable travels.

Nell McShane Wulfhart is a freelance writer based in Seoul. She writes about travel, news and food in Asia, specialising in Korea, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, Condé Nast Traveller and a host of other international publications. Petra is a Sydney-based freelance travel writer. She believes the best journey experiences are often found off the beaten track. “Sailing to the Banda Islands was the most inspiring destination I’ve yet found,” she says.

Illustrator Hendri Nguriana has loved drawing since elementary school. Creating illustrations is his favourite way of expressing the ideas, fantasies and abstract concepts in his mind. He takes inspiration mostly from his favourite movies and video games and from his travels.

Yellow Dayak Motifs One of the most interesting but misunderstood cultures in Indonesia is that of the Dayaks, from Kalimantan. There are over 70 different tribes and all wear different designs, patterns and colours. These are from the Dayak Kenyah group from North Kalimantan. I focused in on the variety of patterns and colours from close up, using enough depth of field to get as much sharp detail in the frame as possible. It is important to get this balance right or you can lose the point of the photo and easily distract from the main subject. Wae Rebo A more general view, which gives a sense of place. This man lives in a very traditional village way up in the mountains of western Flores, where little has changed in thousands of years. The traditional housing in the distance, combined with his simple village clothes as he looks out over his domain, creates a very different effect. This is the beauty of photography and the challenge to look at every scene objectively and paint a picture. The thought process is 90 per cent of the photograph. The rest is just getting the settings right. The easy part!

Men in Green This photo was taken during a special event in Yogyakarta, one of many that graces the heart of Javanese culture throughout the year. Whilst I shot from many angles that day, I liked the one from behind as it takes the eye clearly into the traditional and colourful dress of these men. There are no faces to distract from the subject of the photograph â&#x20AC;&#x201C; another example of giving careful thought to what you want to highlight, and how, before pushing the shutter. Javanese Boy This young boy wears vibrant traditional clothing and has his face painted to look like an old man! If this photo was taken with the boy dressed in everyday clothing it would not be as interesting. I had been photographing for about five hours on this particular day, with many kinds of traditional dress on display, but this young man with his serious look of pride attracted my lens to point in his direction. There are many colours and traditional accessories on display in this shot. Anak laki-laki ini memakai busana daerah dan dirias sehingga terlihat seperti orang dewasa. Jika anak ini difoto mengenakan pakaian sehari-hari, gambar ini akan sangat tidak menarik. Kala itu, saya sudah memotret beragam busana daerah selama 5 jam. Namun, anak lelaki dengan air muka yang serius ini menarik perhatian lensa saya untuk memotretnya.

The Balinese love to display their connection and devotion to the divine. Their culture involves making offerings and prayers to gods in a spirit of love, respect and devotion. One only has to wander to the villages and small country lanes to witness their culture and daily religious practices. The effort that they put into their ceremonies allows a photographer the scope to capture vibrantly interesting images.

Each year children from the ages of 7 to 12 from all over Indonesia perform in dance competitions like this one. I stumbled upon this dance event in Semarang, Java, last year. Of all the colour and vibrancy on display that day, this beautiful young lady really caught my eye. Shooting indoors, I was forced to use a higher ISO of 2,000 to get enough light, as I generally avoid using flash in these circumstances.

Orang Bali menunjukkan pengabdian mereka kepada sang Ilahi setiap harinya. Budaya mereka melibatkan sesaji dan doa pada para dewa dalam semangat cinta, dan penghormatan. Dari semua warna dan semangat yang tampil pada hari itu, gadis kecil yang cantik ini benar-benar menarik perhatian saya. Karena harus mengambil foto di dalam ruangan, saya terpaksa menggunakan ISO 2000, untuk memperoleh cukup cahaya dan menghindari pemakaian flash.

Top Tips I use a variety of lenses, from wide angle, to get a more holistic view of the subject, to prime lenses (generally 50mm 1.4), to focus in on the people and the designs. A zoom lens up to 300mm or more allows for action at close range. As in all photography, light is critical, but often we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t control that at a festival. Sometimes you have to shoot in the middle of the day, which is not optimal. Often the best shots are captured during rehearsals, or while getting ready for an event. Another great time to shoot is after an event, when the subjects are more relaxed. Another opportunity is when the people are back in their villages, where they are more comfortable near home, preparing for a traditional rice harvest ceremony or another type of cultural ceremony. This series of photographs gives a glimpse into the incredible diversity of this wonderful country. Saya memvariasikan penggunaan lensa wide-angle, untuk mendapatkan sisi lebih menyeluruh terhadap objek foto, hingga lensa prime (50 mm 1.4) dapat fokus pada orang dan desain. ASIAN–AFRICAN CONFERENCE COMMEMORATION INDONESIA 2015 April 19–24 Sixty years ago, Bandung, the capital of West Java Province in Indonesia, made history when leaders from 29 emerging countries, most of whom had just gained independence from centuries of colonial rule, joined hands in the first Asian–African conference, determined to create their own future. This year the historic moment will be commemorated in a series

of intergovernmental meetings in Jakarta and ceremonies at Gedung Merdeka, Bandung, where the first meeting took place. One hundred and nine world leaders and 25 international organisations have been invited to participate in this special event, which has been themed, ‘Strengthening Cooperation’, as announced by Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno P. Marsudi, during the press conference following a coordinating meeting at the Presidential Palace on Friday January 9, 2015. Grand side events such as the Asian–African Carnival, an Asian–African Business Forum and more will be held in Bandung, organised by the city of Bandung and the West Java Province government.

Mayor of Bandung, Ridwan Kamil, said that there will several events at the national level that will build up to the pinnacle of the commemoration in Bandung. There will be parades of over 100 participating countries, each showcasing their national costumes and music. “This year’s commemoration of the Asian–African Conference will have lots of music and colour, and it will definitely be most memorable,” added Ridwan Kamil. Indonesia’s President, Joko Widodo, said, “This is a perfect moment for the world to remember that Indonesia has played a fundamental role in global history, which we hope to rekindle through this commemorative event.” With an aim to maintain the strong and relevant spirit of the original conference and to help
