ENLIGHTENMENT IN DIALOGUE

Michael Schwarz, director Centre for International Aﬀairs

Michael Schwarz has been heading the Centre for International Affairs at Stiftung Mercator, one of Germany’s largest foundations, since January 2011. Previously, he held various positions at Robert Bosch Stiftung, most recently as director of communications. Jennifer Thomé met up with Schwarz to learn about the upcoming Enlightenment in Dialogue series.

What is Enlightenment in Dialogue? Stiftung Mercator is staging the “Enlightenment in Dialogue” series of events as an academic accompaniment to the exhibition “The Art of the Enlightenment” in Beijing presented by the Berlin State Museums, the Dresden State Art Collections, and the Bavarian State Painting Collections in cooperation with the National Museum of China. The oﬃcial forums of the series have been organized by the Foundation in partnership with the National Museum of China. In addition, it has independently initiated a series of salons on the subject, giving German and Chinese intellectuals the chance to exchange views and ideas on philosophical, social, and artistic aspects of the Enlightenment. The salons are designed to imitate the classic salon of the Enlightenment and to oﬀer a forum for open discussions of art, culture and philosophy.

What is the most important thing people will take away from Enlightenment in Dialogue? Stiftung Mercator regards enlightenment as a universal phenomenon that symbolizes diversity, openness and tolerance, values that also characterize the spirit and work of the Foundation. The “Enlightenment in Dialogue” series intends to describe the basic principles of the European and potential Chinese enlightenment. This enlightenment is not to be limited to philosophy and historical science, but is to be brought into the cultural present day and linked to other topics: Chinese history and tradition, economics, environmental and climate protection, culture versus nature, music, and literature. The objective of the series of events is to illustrate the value of enlightenment for a future that is worth living in China and in Europe. The term “enlightenment” should be re-rooted in people’s 广告DM

consciousness. Dialogue is the path, intercultural understanding the goal. Like a mediator, the series of events is intended to help get China and Europe, and the different groups in society, talking to one another with a view to bringing about greater mutual understanding. When will this event take place? The one-year event series “Enlightenment in Dialogue” oﬃcially accompanies the exhibition “The Art of the Enlightenment” and continues this September: The German Stiftung Mercator hosts two Salon events at the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre on September 3 and 4 and a dialogue event in cooperation with the National Museum of China on September 9. Wang Duma of Saratoga Spring Water

Are you one of those people who think that all waters are alike? Well, Wang Duma, cofounder and managing partner of HiSeas International, the exclusive distributor of Saratoga Spring Water in Greater China, begs to diﬀer, and has ever since he started working for HiSeas after graduating from the Beijing International Studies University. Jennifer Thomé caught up with Wang Duma to learn why luxury water is making a splash in China.

How did you get into this line of work? I was at a dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York with my business associates. I was enchanted by these cobalt blue bottles glowing on almost every table. How do you market to Chinese people? As America’s first and finest spring water, Saratoga is marketed to up-scale establishments and is associated with a high-end luxury lifestyle. We have been supplying it to international luxury hotels, upscale restaurants, and private clubs since it was brought into China a year ago. Saratoga will not be sold on the retail market. TRAVELING THROUGH TIME WITH POSTCARDS LARSULRIK THOM OF BEIJING POSTCARDS Larsulrik Thom is capturing a piece of Beijing history in a very unusual way–by postcard. Six years ago he and Simon Gjeroe launched Beijing Postcards, and in their upcoming event “Beijing on the Move” they will put their amazing collection of postcards on display for the public. Jennifer Thomé spoke with Thom to learn more about his passion for poscards. How did you start Beijing Postcards? Simon Gjeroe and I got the idea about using old photographs of China to print postcards six years ago. We were sitting at Simon’s, drinking whiskey and looking at some old photos Simon had come across when the idea presented itself like a genie from a bottle. Simon collects everything; his place is ﬁlled with all kinds of collectibles, mostly Chinese. I think what intrigued us about the pictures was that the China and Beijing that presented themselves through the old

paper pictures were very diﬀerent from what you would expect to see. The photos were like a window to the past. Looking at the pictures, we found small details that took us by surprise. Weinema discovered that the majestic Qianmen Gate had actually been a cinema in the 1930’s; we also discovered that Mao’s portrait did not permanently hang on the Tiananmen Gate until 1966. All these discoveries were triggered by what we found in the pictures. What’s your favorite part of doing this? One of the most re-

warding things about what we do is that we not only have text and documents describing Beijing, but we also have photos. In many cases, you can actually ask people who remember. Interviewing people and listening to their stories is deﬁnitely what I enjoy the most. To prepare for our upcoming exhibition, “Beijing on the Move”, I have interviewed an 86-year-old artist—a gentleman name Zhang Xiande—several times. Zhang Xiande painted the gates of Beijing in the ﬁfties before many of them were torn down. Going to his home and lis-

tening to stories about camels, the city wall, the earthen roads, and other aspects of old Beijing is a meaningful experience in so many ways. To me, the stories behind the pictures ignite our project. I think my favorite postcards are the ones that surprise people and make them realize that the history of something is diﬀerent from what they originally thought. The Tiananmen picture without Mao’s portrait, “Tiananmen square” in the thirties before there was a Tiananmen Square, Qianmen Gate as a cinema— those kinds of pictures. They are not only good pictures, but there is also a story behind them. My favorite part of Beijing is deﬁnitely the area around Nanluogu Xiang. My business is there and it is the area that I know best.

Where do you find all of your postcards? Most of the pictures are collected abroad through various channels like auctions, flea markets, antique shops, and relatives of missionaries and merchants who went to China a hundred years ago. We did not envision that we would also do talks and exhibitions that evening at Simon’s when we first got the idea about making postcards, but it naturally developed that way. We also started making limited edition calendars and collecting original maps and prints of China. Beijing Postcards has become a whole concept. We see ourselves as kind of a bridge between the experts and the ordinary interested Beijinger. We realize that everybody is interested to some extent.

Since what we are working with is the story of the city itself, then of course people living here would like to know more! This September, we have an exhibition called “Beijing on the Move”. We want to use our collection of original maps and historical photographs of Beijing to describe how the city developed from a walled enclosure to today’s ever-expanding megacity. The exhibition will give people an easy and accessible way to understand how Beijing has developed! Chinese-American Andy Wen knew he was going to be an architect in high school when he received a scholarship to go to Harvard to attend an art class and saw a graduate student in Harvard Yard drawing a building. When he asked him what he was doing, the young man said that he was an architecture student, and it was then and there, looking at his drawings, that Wen knew he would be an architect. Why? Because he thought he could do much better. Jennifer Thome and Alice Xia met up with Wen to learn more about his path and his inspiration. We were just looking at your portfolio, and it seems like you can draw inspiration from anything. A long time ago, I wrote a book about architecture and a lot of what I talk about is the diﬀerence between architecture and buildings. My conclusion is that a building is something that satisfies function and architecture is something way beyond function. Looking back in history, all that we believe to be architecture is something that is an invention, something that is meaningful, or something that comes from more than just function. That was my theory. I realized my belief that architecture should last for thousands of years, and for something to last, it must be meaningful. It must have some representation in its image. So, while a lot architects do funky things, I feel that, in the end, it has to satisfy something functional. This building [Heifei Plaza] has

What you build for New York does not belong in Beijing” something to do with China, with yin and yang, and with a qipao. Some people later believed that it was about tango, or lovers. In the end the meaning is very ambiguous because it’s something beyond the inspiration. It will transcend into another life of its own. So how do you realize that in the company? We have a lot of talented people in this oﬃce, and I keep looking for ambition, if I am looking for anything at all. We have a bunch of really good people that have a profound love of architecture. We like working collectively. We organize workshops, and you’d be amazed at how many wonderful

ideas we get out of them. We then have to think about the function, and go back and forth, massaging design and function. You can’t do anything without function, but of course, beauty is also important. That’s how the meaning is generated. We make it a point to use our collective resources of talent. Many years ago we had an office in Hong Kong, and then we had a group here that was very good at execution. I came here about three years ago to turn this office from an execution office to a design lead office, meaning that we would no longer depend on outside resources to do the design. We’re just as good, if not better, than our sister

“Beijing is going to make New York look like peanuts” companies, and we’re also really good at execution. So is it hard to compete against established firms? In the beginning, we were known as an execution office, so it was a little difficult, but as we took on more projects, within the last year I have yet to see a client walk out of here without giving us a project. We’re more than just competitive. Our slogan is “International design with local services.” If not, we’d just have one main office. The localization is really important. China is all about speed and size. We’re a big company, we’ve got the expertise, and we also have the speed. What normally takes three months to do in New York takes us three weeks. We’ve set up the collective thinking method so we can go faster than anyone else, but also come up with the quality of design and the freshness of ideas. That, and we also understand the local culture. My colleagues and I can see things from the outside, so sometimes, we can see things a little bit clearer. We’re also good at using research and picking up ideas. I believe that good architecture and design cannot be imported. It originates from the place because you have to see and develop the idea. What you build for New York does not belong in Beijing.

for everything that we manufacture, we are just cheap labor, and that is why, at this moment, the West can still compete. I think the most wonderful thing about America is invention. It’s about ideas and creativity; that is why every dollar China makes in production, companies like Apple make in proﬁt. So what I’m getting at is that China still lacks the creative energy because the basis of the education system does not allow for it. All the training is about respect and memorization. It’s not about how to think, create, and invent. Invention is what will go a long way, and it’s the same in architecture. We don’t copy anything and we don’t recreate history. That is our competitive edge. Where do you see your ﬁeld going in the future, and where do you see your role in it? I don’t see myself going anywhere. I think I’ll still be doing the same thing in 20 years. A lot of people say that we will not be able to compete with the local design institutes down the line, but we are creative and

And how can the West compete? I remember when I was really young, living in the States, whenever something would break you would turn it around and see that it was “Made in Taiwan.” They made really cheap products because labor was so inexpensive. Now, China has taken that role, and a big part of China is all about production. We’re all production oriented. However,

that’s where local companies will never be able to compete with. And ultimately, that’s what we are about. We are creating the future. That is what we are striving for. For every new project that comes in, we try to reinvent ourselves. I grew up in New Jersey and I have been living here for 18 years. Architects follow where the economy is, and we’re here, in China. You see this huge boom. People ask what’s next, but China has just gotten started. If you go on top of the World Trade Center and look down, you can see that compared, to New York, this is a ﬂat city. Something that I know is that Beijing is going to be much bigger than New York City. Beijing is going to make it look like peanuts. The wave right now is just beginning, and we are at the very bottom of it. A lot of the work done previous to the last ten years is temporary construction, so what China calls the “new China” is not happening yet. This is why we want to push ourselves so we can be at the top of the wave. We’re going to be here in 300 years.

A BEAUTY PAGEANT … FOR BUILDINGS!

According to the great animation mogul and philanthropist Walt Disney, “I have been up against tough competition all my life. I wouldn’t know how to get along without it.” The founders of Beijing’s Architects in Mission (AIM) must have had this in mind when creating the AIM architectural design competition. This annual event promotes high-quality design among architecture students and young professionals, while providing a stage for them to demonstrate their design talents. The 2011 competition task is to enact a “Green Transformation” of an abandoned steel plant into an ecologically friendly Chinese Animation and Gaming Town. Sarah Bajc explored why Walt would have been proud. Xu Wang, why did you create this competition? We created the Architects in Mission (AIM) competition to encourage talented young architectural designers to focus on ways to care about society through their work. This year, the AIM competition committee is supported by both ZeybekogluNayman Associates (ZNA) and the Shougang Group. The Shougang Group was founded in 1919 in western Beijing, and became the largest steel producer in China. When China won the honor of hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the Shougang Group shifted production to other locations, leaving a site that expands more than eight square kilometers, including a steel furnace, lakes, large parcels of greenery, and giant factory structures. These two huge organizations, from opposite sides of the earth and seemingly from opposite ends of the industry-scale, have come together with a common mission. Both care deeply about protecting our environment and enhancing society through the rejuvenation of unused resources into valuable and economically viable space. They have created the AIM competition to help fulﬁll that mission as well as encourage emerging

“Green Transformation is the process of using land resources, spatial quality and other conditions of old industrial zones in order to transform a previous heavy industrial production site into new industries with low-pollution and low-energy consumption” architectural talent. Over a tenyear period of time, including ten different competitions, AIM will attempt to rehabilitate the entirety of the vast Shougang industrial park as well as other dilapidated industrial zones. What exactly is this year’s competition about? The second year of the AIM Competition invites participants to implement Green Transformation on a portion of the Shougang Group space. The goal is to support Beijing in continuing to be a healthy, balanced, and attractive city through the development of a “Central Recreation District” in the vacant Er-Tong space left over from the General Mechanical Factory of the Shougang Group, which ceased operations in 1997. Er-Tong is located in the Fengtai District, and has already gone through a conceptual design to become a Chinese Animation and Gaming Town. The total site is 83 hectares, and the existing buildings have an area of

300,000 sqm, including large-span spaces that oﬀer high potential for reuse. Er-Tong is surrounded by a green-belt, and regional environment and transportation systems have yet to be improved. Er-Tong will be the ﬁrst phase, and lessons gained from it can be applied to the redevelopment of other areas within the Shougang Group space in the future. What does Green Transformation mean? Green Transformation is the process of using land resources, spatial quality, and other conditions of old industrial zones in order to transform a previous heavy industrial production site into new industries with low-pollution and low-energy consumption–especially culturally creative industries. The transformation should emphasize the diversity of its former industrial spirit. Reuse and renovation of existing structures and resources have been given prioritized attention over any new building. A pragmatic balance

must be maintained among existing resources, new investment, people, and the greater urban fabric of the city. Rehabilitation of old industrial zones will help bring the chaotic urban sprawl under control, as well as attract investment in new creative industries and high paying jobs. The preservation of such sites is also beneﬁcial to the integrity of historic memories. Successful cases of such transformation include Ruhr in Germany, Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, and the Navy Pier in Chicago.

How long has the AIM competition been in existence, and what results have you seen from prior years? AIM started in the Spring of 2010. There were more than 500 registered teams and 300 ﬁnal submissions from all over the world. The quality was very high across the board, though we did see a stronger response from the West than from within China even though we had more media exposure in China than in other countries. In the end, we had about half our submissions from China, with the rest representing a truly global response. How do you see the competition changing in the future? We have a plan to run these AIM competitions for ten years. We hope this is the right timeline to have a real eﬀect both on Beijing’s city development and on the thinking of young designers. Even beyond the Shougang space there are so many old industrial areas to consider. How are things going for the 2011 AIM competition? As of now, we already have more than 500 registered teams from all over the world. About 300 are from China. Last year’s winner was accepted into the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and other competitors have also gotten into top design schools,

BRINGING UP BUILDERS

Michael Cummings, architect at Aedas and faculty member at the University of Kansas, School of Architecture Michael Cummings has been practicing architecture for more than fifteen years, a third of which was spent in Beijing. During this time, he’s done it all – he has worked for Chinese and foreign companies, had his own firm, and has even gotten into some Indiana Jones-style adventures in architecture. He’s currently working for Aedas Architects and running a study abroad program for the University of Kansas, School of Architecture. Jennifer Thomé met up with Cummings to learn more about his experiences and how he’s helping to build the architecture of tomorrow. What was your first impression when you came to China to work in this field? Coming from a corporate architecture practice in Chicago, I found the architectural profession in China unruly and very exciting. It was a professional period of more creative freedom and extreme frustration. Most professional expats will relate that it is not until you embrace the chaos and stop attempting to control it that you can actually begin to navigate it, enjoy some of the insanity, and find greater success. What do you think the future of the architecture field will look like? In some respects, we are seeing a small part of the future of architecture right here in Beijing, right now. Buildings like the CCTV Tower and the Phoenix International Media Center are what more

That being said, it is not just about the image. It is about the process. CCTV was a bold competition entry that chose to redeﬁne what could be accomplished structurally. I believe it changed the way designers approach competition submissions. It was radical and nearly unbuildable. However, it won the competition and now, it stands. The Phoenix International Media Center shows the future of parametric modeling, and the use of B.I.M., or Building Information Modeling. These tools allow for more complex forms, and provide

the ability to have extremely precise coordination between architects, structural engineers, electrical, mechanical and plumbing engineers, and the contractor. If these buildings represent the future, what are China’s biggest advantages and challenges? China’s biggest advantage overall is cheap construction labor, along with less expensive building materials. The costs of these complicated buildings would be astronomical in the US. From the architect’s side of the equation, there is the beneﬁt of a less expensive labor force, but more impor-

tantly, it is about speed. Architects working in China, both Chinese and Westerners, are just faster at designing and executing. It is a result of the demand. Whereas an architect in the US might design three or four buildings a year, it is not an exaggeration to see an architect in Beijing design three or four a month. In the time it takes a Western corporate architecture office to have meetings to decide whether or not to participate in a competition for a new building, the Chinese office will have generated a multitude of ideas and already be in production mode. Challenges remain, of course, like experience. Certain building typologies need a great deal of knowledge to plan and design properly. For instance, specialized buildings such as hospitals, laboratories, and certain educational facilities have complex programs that must be designed properly in order to function at a base level. Chinese architects still lack some of this knowledge. The majority of buildings we see built in China today are residential towers, office buildings, hotels, and shopping centers. They are not that complicated programmatically and yet, not all architects here have not quite perfected their execution. These are the reasons why we see long lines in front of elevators, trash piled-up in the fire stairs, strange spaces in the corners of buildings that only gather dust. Architectural detailing lags behind here as well. Both time and knowledge are factors. Young Chinese and Western architects in Beijing have not always learned about detailing buildings properly. This fact, coupled with contractors and a labor force that lacks experience and knowledge, leads to many poorly executed building details. Buildings are designed and

“Whereas an architect in the US might design three or four buildings a year, it is not an exaggeration to see an architect in Beijing design three or four a month” built so quickly here that it is nearly impossible to make sure all details have been thought through. This is why we see doors that don’t close properly, cracking tiles, uneven joints that have been filled in with massive amounts of caulk, and building staff sweeping rain water away from the front door. And still, the growth is here. What will the West have to do to compete? Architects practicing and designing projects in the West need no adjustment. If those same architects want to practice in the China market, significant changes in mentality, management, and design process would be required. Speed and flexibility are essential. This is one of the reasons why I thought it was important to expose US architectural students to the Chinese architectural process and introduce them to the conditions here in this market at a formative time in their education. More and more companies will be looking to enter this market and the ability to hire recent grads to help them succeed is a necessity. The program I run for the University of Kansas does just this. We invite students in their last year of school to work in some exceptional offices in Beijing for a semester. How long has that program been running and what is the future of it? This fall will be the fourth year that the University of Kansas will have students working in Beijing’s architectural offices, and the program has led to a number of young professionals returning to start their careers here. This coming semester, we will be expanding the 广告DM

program to include a history of Chinese architecture course taught in English. It will actually be a lecture series that I hope to open to other architectural professionals as well as the public. Teaching the skill sets to collaborate globally will be part of the evolution of the program. We are just beginning to explore that topic with a series of exercises this coming semester. Architects function best when they sit together at a table and share ideas and solutions by drawing on a piece of paper. However international architectural practices with global teams cannot always have that as a working method any longer. The ability for architects to make use of technology and work creatively with one another from remote points on the globe has become a necessary skillset. This aspect of the University of Kansas program will look to explore the complications and execute new solutions to improve upon it. Do you see this aspect of architectural education improving on the challenges you mentioned before? I do. I see the development of this methodology as a way to bridge some of the challenges. A successful collaborative process between Western architects with particular typology knowledge, and detailing experience working virtually side-by-side with colleagues in Beijing who provide creative visions executed at China’s breakneck speed. It would bring more knowledge to Chinese architects, a greater business exposure of the China market to US architects, and the result without question will be better architecture.

SOLARIZING BEIJING

Du Deli, CEO of Deli Solar Holding Ltd., and solar water heating pioneer Beijing might not be known for its plentiful sunshine, but it is becoming a hub for deploying solar power. One local company, Deli Solar Holdings, is helping to drive that effort with a variety of alternative energy systems, including solar thermal systems for hot water and space heating, and solar-powered lighting devices. Sarah Bajc recently caught up with Deli’s CEO to shed light on how he’s guided China’s first US-listed solar water heating company into becoming a leader in largescale engineering projects that incorporate low-carbon integrated solutions. “Low carbon emissions” is a term many have heard but few understand. Can you enlighten us on what it means to Deli Energy? Global climate change, increasing consumption of energy, and ecological damage are huge challenges faced by all humans in the 21th century. These are particular issues in China due to our fast growth. As a result, low carbon emission development is an important new strategy for economic expansion in China. It is necessary for realizing global low carbon emission targets, as well as creating a signiﬁcant approach to boosting the sustainable development of enterprises and society. To Deli Solar, a company providing integrated eco-solutions for buildings, the emergence of low carbon emissions as a key component of China’s economic model is a great opportunity, and also a key respon-

I think that the low carbon industry in China cannot just copy the model in developed countries, but rather must establish a unique model given China’s specific situation. Deli Solar will actively investigate and develop solutions for the low carbon eco-development model in China and exert ourselves to be a leader in China’s low carbon sustainable development eﬀorts. Why did you get into this industry? Every entrepreneur is eager for continuous improvement in his or her business. Based on my personal experience in the low carbon industry, it is a never ending process of continuous strategic adjustments to adapt to new technolo-

gies, changing market demands, and social development. At the end of 2009, the Copenhagen Climate Summit attracted an unprecedented level of attention to the various issues of global warming from concerned citizens around the world, including in China. The concept of a low carbon life becoming a requirement for survival is beginning to be recognized by more and more people. Way back in 2007, our company had already realized that China must begin to focus on low carbon emissions and environmental protection, and so, we would include it in the future National Development Plan. Therefore, we changed our direction from new energy development to low carbon industry integration.

We created integrated low carbon eco-solutions that included the functions of energy-saving, energy generation, environment treatment, and ecological protection, all combined together. We then began to apply that model to construct eco-hospitals, eco-hotels, eco-campuses for schools and businesses, eco-industrial plants, eco-residential areas and even whole eco-cities. We recently won a huge contract to be in charge of all of the eco-processes as a general contractor, from initial consultation, research and development, planning, designing, to investment and construction. The more we have grown and developed at Deli Solar, the more confident I am that the old model of high energy consumption with low energy efﬁciency has come to an end. There is an impressive and signiﬁcant social revolution taking place in the low carbon industry on a global basis that will change the existing models of production, living and consumption habits. As consumers, how can we encourage businesses to take low carbon seriously? As consumers, we should all try to purchase low carbon products or products with energy-saving labels. How is China doing in low carbon development in comparison to the rest of the world? Have there been any major advances recently? The Chinese government pays a high degree of attention to low carbon emissions products, construction, and capabilities. Provinces have each been tasked with making low carbon emissions one of their government’s achievement criteria. It is beginning to work well and efficiency is improving. But, there are still many practical difficulties to overcome. In recent years, China has done a lot in low carbon emission management and has transformed many aspects of the country into a low carbon, sustainable economic development model. China has established a strict target for energy efficiency and energy savings. We have made huge investments in the renewable energy industry and as of today, China is the country with the largest coverage of solar heating systems in the world. Over the next few years, China will push to establish more eco-residential areas, eco-industrial parks, eco-cities, and even ecoprovinces. As the largest developing country in the world, China has an impressive and huge development plan for the low carbon industry. The hole in the ozone is already huge. What difference could just a few reductions make now? Why bother? The ozone layer is critical for protecting the earth and creatures on the earth from being harmed by ultraviolet rays from solar radiation. Many industrial activities damage the ozone. CFCs from air conditioning units and refrigerators are the most prevalent and serious threats to the ozone. They should always be fully recycled or sifted out. Besides CFCs, carbon dioxide, methane, oxynitride, and dozens of other chemical elements from industrial waste and emissions, vehicles, nuclear explosions, and the decomposition of ammonia fertilizers are all damaging the ozone. People must be more aware and reduce these as much as possible. AN AFTERNOON AT NIUJIE MOSQUE

This month is Ramadan. In its honor, I went to check out Niujie Mosque, Beijing’s oldest and largest mosque. It sits at the north end of Xuanwu District, which starts around the southwestern part of Line 2. Xuanwu has the largest Muslim concentration in Beijing and the mosque is the spiritual center for about 10,000 people. Luckily, before making the journey down there, I read online that wearing long pants and covering the shoulders is mandatory. I was about to set off into the Beijing heat with shorts and a tank top. I got oﬀ of Line 2 at Changchun Station. From there I took a cab to Niujie. It’s about 1km away, so it’s definitely possible to walk. Niujie, Ox Street in English, is a large and very average looking street for Beijing. Other than the men in skullcaps and women in hijabs, there’s nothing to distinguish the area as particularly Muslim. I got

to the gate of the mosque and an old man greeted me, invited me into his little air-conditioned room to purchase the ten kuai ticket, handed me a map of the grounds and sent me on my way. The campus covers approximately 6,000 sqm and looks like a Ming era temple. It uses that familiar traditional Chinese architecture with the standard red, blue, and green. From the outside, the only noticeable diﬀerence is the Arabic inscribed on the buildings instead of Chinese characters. As I walked around the mosque, I was greeted by many with the traditional, “As-salaam Alaikum”, which is a common greeting in Arabic meaning, “May the peace of Allah be with you.” For a steamy Tuesday afternoon, the place was lively—not with tourists, but with worshippers. The prayer hall is a huge open room with rows of carpet for kneeling. I took my shoes oﬀ and

entered. The hall is an extremely peaceful place with a certain silence to it that makes it more than just a quiet room. The noise of the construction and traﬃc from outside seemed to disappear. I decided to try my hand at praying. I went over to one of the prayer rugs, knelt down, and said the only prayers I know. I stood up slowly, feeling thankful. Coming out of the prayer hall, I found a grove of pomegranate trees lining the outside. The fruits were already starting to ripen. Continuing around, I came to a minaret (the tower that the Imams use to call believers to prayer) that looked far more Chinese than Arabic. Similar in style to the minaret is the astrological observation tower for observing the moon and determining the dates for fasting. The grounds also contain the tombs of former Imams. As I wandered through the rest of the mosque I found a gift shop

where you can buy Islamic themed trinkets, which doesn’t seem very tasteful. The whole complex can be explored in 30 minutes, even with a stop for prayer if you’dl ike. I exited and started walking up Niujie to see what else it had to offer. There is a small but lush park just north of the mosque’s walls. It would be a nice place to have a picnic. Passing by there, I found vendors selling naan bread, sweets, and nuts. Unfortunately for me, when I was walking about at around 3pm, most of the restaurants were closed. I checked with five different Muslim restaurants in the area and each one asked me to come back later. It seems that they are either serious about their fasting, or their naptime. One block west, there’s a large hutong that runs parallel to Niujie called Jiaozi Hutong. If you’re into exploring hutongs—especially the gritty, un-restored kind—you’ll probably like this area. Here begins a maze of dirty alleys that is nearly uninterrupted until you hit the Temple of Heaven Park, 2km farther west. To the south, there is a huge Muslim school, but it looked closed when I passed by. If you’re interested in spending the day in the area, I recommend scheduling in some time at the Temple of Heaven or one of the other parks in the area, such as Xuanwu Park or Wanshou Park. As lovely as Niujie Mosque and Niujie itself are, they will not be enough to entertain for very long. Still, Niujie is a must see for Muslims, history buffs, the spiritual wayfarer, and the cultural anthropologist. There are tons of good Muslim food in the area, but that’s not exclusive to Niujie. It seems rare to experience religion firsthand in Beijing, but the Niujie Mosque is both authentic and welcoming to visitors. I enjoyed myself and even thought it was worth wearing jeans in the 30 degree heat to visit. 广告DM

BEIJING’S ARCHITECTURAL STANDOUTS Photographer Jordan Thomas Mitchell explores the capitol

In the past ten years, Beijing’s cityscape has undergone rapid transformation. The entire nation is seizing change at an aggressive pace and it is evident in the country’s capitol. Here are a few of the architectural highlights from the city’s emerging new face and identity, including an occasional throwback and oddball. This list is not, by any means, exhaustive and the buildings aren’t in any particular order–much like the city itself.

Chenzhuang Castle Just to pay homage to China’s ever recurring quirks, here’s a little gem from way out in northern Beijing. What looks like a fairytale castle in the middle of Changping District’s farmland is actually the centerpiece for an abandoned theme park plan. The developers had a little land dispute with the local farmers, never reached a settlement, and thus the castle remains—unﬁnished. Head 25 miles up the Badaling expressway and take the Chenzhuang exit. Yes, it’s climbable.

The National Library The National Library of China is the largest library in Asia, housing 23 million volumes. The coollooking building was designed by the German ﬁrm KSP Engel and Zimmerman. It is built on expanding levels that open into a large atrium with a glass shrine containing the historic Chinese encyclopedia Siku Quanshu as its centerpiece. The building is not just architectural bravado, but was created with sensitivity to historic tradition—a tasteful touch.

MOMA Linked Hybrid The Linked Hybrid is an innovative cluster of joined apartment buildings. The complex contains standalone buildings, situated in a ring and linked with glass walkways in the sky. The project’s designers, Steven Holl Architects, describe the concept as “an open city within a city.” The various types of public spaces included in the design, such as commercial, residential, recreational and educational, are aimed at encouraging “interactive relations.”

The Forbidden City The father of traditional Chinese design. There isn’t too much to say about this enormous maze of buildings that stretches on for blocks, except that after centuries, it’s still one of the most beautiful works of architecture that China has to oﬀer. Go to Jingshan Park, climb that slave-built mountain, and look over the Imperial Palace.

Museum. Seriously breathtaking.

The National Theater The National Theater looks like half of a large metal egg ﬂoating in a pool of water. Does that have some sort of Freudian social connotation? Maybe, but who cares when the building is that beautiful? The dome is constructed of titanium and glass, seats 5,452 people in three halls, and is surrounded by an artiﬁcial lake. The theater mainly serves as an opera house and was designed by the French architect Paul Andreau. The building is only accessible by taking a tunnel that goes from the outside, under the man-made lake, and into the egg.

CCTV Something like the Bird’s Nest, everyone has seen the new CCTV building. It’s probably the most daunting architectural feat China has accomplished and maybe one of the most innovative designs the world has seen in the 21st century. The Harvard professor and Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas is responsible for the concept and bulk of the design. Perhaps similar to the propaganda pushed from the building, the notion of its size is obscured. With no distinct ﬂoors or windows visible from the outside and shape-shifting forms that change with perspective, the megalith is hard to put your ﬁnger on. 广告DM

Beijing South Railway Station The turtle-esque, ovalish railway station opened in 2008 and was designed by Terry Farrell’s UK/Hong Kong based ﬁrm, which also designed the Victoria Peak Tower in Hong Kong and South Korea’s Incheon International Air Port. The interior is sleek and contemporary, looking more like Hong Kong than Beijing. The building replaced Yongdingmen station and will serve as Beijing’s hub for highspeed trains. The station also contains 3, 246 solar panels to generate electricity.

CROSS THIS BRIDGE WHEN YOU GET THERE

Ed Jocelyn, tour guide and founder of Red Rock Treks & Expeditions

Ed Jocelyn has spent much of the last ten years exploring historic trails around China. He is best known for his “New Long March” expeditions, during which he trekked 12,500 kilometers in the footsteps of the Chinese Red Army. These days, Ed is exploring the Tea and Horse trail in Yunnan, where he also leads caravan adventure tours with his and partner Yang Xiao’s company, Red Rock Treks & Expeditions (www.redrocktrek.com). Jennifer Thomé caught up with him to learn a little about his favorite trails, and more importantly, about the amazing bridges that connect them. Jinlong Bridge There’s a touch of romance to this iron chain structure, built in 1880 across the Jinsha River just northwest of Lijiang. The story goes that a boy from south of the river fell in love with a girl from the other side. Her parents disapproved of the match, and so the young couple tried to elope. They reached the north bank of the Jinsha, but the ferryman refused to take them across and the girl was recaptured by her family. The boy swore that if he ever had enough money, he would return and build a bridge on that spot so the star-crossed lovers will never again be thwarted by the ferryman. Jinlong Bridge was, indeed, built by a local-boy-made-good: Jiang Zonghan made his fortune as a military oﬃcial in Guizhou, but he most likely had the bridge built as a good deed to encourage trade in his hometown. The bridge sped commerce to and from Sichuan, at its peak carrying up to 1,000 mules a day. Less romantically, 48 workers lost their lives building it.

Bori Bridge I think this is the loveliest bridge I have seen in China. It spans the Yalong River in Xinlong, an isolated Tibetan county in western Sichuan. As far as I know, Bori Bridge is the biggest surviving example of this Tibetan style wood cantilever, which dates from the Qing dynasty. Remnants of similar bridges along the Yalong have been destroyed by forces sent by the government in Lhasa in 1930. In the village above, Bori Bridge is the shell of an enormous fortified home that belonged to a man nicknamed Buluman (“The One-Eyed”). A rebel against both the Qing Empire and the Lhasa government, Buluman is an official Tibetan popular hero, but a teacher at the local primary school demurred. “He liked feeding children until they were full,” she said, “and then he would take them to a high place and throw them off so that he could hear the sound they made when they hit the ground. He liked that sound. We don’t really like Buluman.” Dao County Town Pontoon This is a particularly unusual structure in southwest Hunan, said to date back 700 years or more. However, that’s not to say the current pontoon is 700 years old. For one thing, the boats are now made of metal instead of wood, but the overall design has not fundamentally changed over the centuries. It leads across the Xiaoshui River to the foot of Dao County Town’s old city wall. In the early days of the Long March, the Red Army planned to break through an enemy encirclement at this point, but when they reached the east bank of the Xiaoshui on November 18, 1934, they found that the town’s defenders had sensibly withdrawn the pontoon to the far side. The Reds actually benefited from the locals’ reluctance to destroy a valuable piece of property. A team of Red swimmers grabbed the pontoon and before long, the main force of the Red Army was pouring into Dao County Town, which was swiftly abandoned by its hapless protectors. Nanxun Bridge This splendid expression of Ming Dynasty style and confidence has been left to rot gently in a vegetable patch, cut off by the modern highway as it bypasses the old town of Zhoucheng. Nanxun Bridge was built in 1544 at the southern entrance to Zhoucheng. Back then, it was a wealthy trading center for northwest Yunnan and the seat of the county government, as well as a way station for pilgrims heading to the holy mountain of Jizushan. It’s a backwater these days: the county government moved in 1956, and most of the pilgrims just drive straight through. Pre-Revolution, however, the citizens had so much money they could afford a 1,000-strong militia to guard the town when it was approached by the Red Army in April 1936. 广告DM

Six newly minted architects talk about the world of tomorrow

Young architects are actively engaging in the construction of the world of tomorrow. Michael Cummings introduced Jennifer Thomé to a handful of young architects who told her about their vision for the future. What trends to do you see developing in your field? “Beijing is a unique platform to begin a career as a young architect. A lot of major projects being worked on now are not only monumental in size but are also designed on empty cities with no context. “Boom towns” are being built from ground up waiting to house their future inhabitants. However, the breadth of opportunity lies not in the scale of the project but in the fact that the rapidly developing country yearns to make an identity for its coming age. Appropriately, as China struggles to find that identity, architects also struggle with this reality in their designs. Western architects strive to make a modern mark in the city that achieves the latest architectural trend whilst Chinese clients still covet art deco towers and Greek temple-like structures. In the end, China is a large clusterf*ck of different theories and ideological experiments in architecture, with no one to say what is right and what is wrong.”–Jennifer Ha, Architect at Urbanus Architecture and Design “Trends depend on current events and possibilities. With the recent economic crisis the construction market has stagnated and is now recovering slowly. Instead of big projects, especially in Europe and the US, it’s easier to find private clients asking for small projects, such as renovations or family residences. This brings a deeper study of the human scale and a higher quality product. And consequently, not enough money in our pockets. On the other hand, BRIC countries still want to show off, building the biggest and tallest buildings as a feudal highest tower competition, but also giving us the possibility to build our worst fantasies.” –Achille Tortini, Architect at MAD Architects “Our field has many overlaps with landscape design, urban design, and even art installation. So I would say I see the realm of design expanding to encompass parts of our built environment that were previously regarded as utilitarian or simply engineering. Engineering is great except the problem is that engineering deals with

mostly non-human factors, like wind loads, number of automobiles, hydrostatic pressure, etc. If you look at the Guomao intersection you can see exactly what I am talking about. Everything that is built within Guomao was designed by an engineer. It is sized for cars, subway vents, electrical transformers, etc. However it is very ugly and difficult for people to use. The hand of an architect or landscape designer is not present, so the space is unpleasant. In the future, designers and architects will not only be collaborating on the buildings, but they will be collaborating closely with engineers and planners on everything in between.” –Daniel Gass, Director at Ballistic Architecture Machine What’s your biggest worry about the future of architecture? “Thanks to parametric design, we can plan every kind of building, and play with every possible shape, but construction techniques are often not as updated as design possibilities. This leads to a loss of control in the building process and, as a consequence, to a lower quality of architecture.” –Achille Tortini, Architect at MAD Architects “Although architecture has traditionally been a trendsetter when it comes to modern culture and technologies, the influence of the architect has been diminishing in recent years. This is especially true in China. Trained architects, often foreign, have been in high demand throughout China for the last several years, and many have flocked to the country for work. But their influence is largely, and quite literally, superficial when it comes to the final construction of buildings. The primary function of an architect is to enhance the lives of a building’s or an urban environment’s users, but too often I see promising projects spiral into dysfunction at the hands of clients looking only to capitalize on an investment. When non-architects find out what I do for a living the first question is often, “What do you think of this building or that,” followed by, “and why are buildings built so poorly here? Isn’t there anything you can do about that?” The answer unfortunately at this point is ‘very little’. “Many factors contribute poorly constructed buildings, not the least of which are the untrained workers constructing them and the use of cheap materials, but I see the pace of construction as being the primary problem. I commend China for bring millions of people out of poverty through these construction booms, but in the process skyscrapers are being built that will have only a fraction of the useful lifespan that buildings in developed nations would have. In my opinion, and despite this significantly lowering my job prospects [laughs] I think it would be to society’s benefit if building slowed down here just a bit to make sure things are done right. It pains me as an architect to see a building whose design was obviously slaved over falling to pieces at an important urban intersection. The truth is that one can’t ever predict the value of a network, but we can be sure that it will eventually come in handy somehow. A warning, however: if someone tries to build a network for

“Ladies, please be more confident in your own achievements!” a specific purpose other than just making friends, they will fail. This is an ongoing problem for anyone in business development because networking is essential to their jobs, but most people know within seconds that if someone approaching them has an agenda. Tell us a bit about your events. We now organize three large scale annual events. The upcoming annual conference is a full day of thought leadership discussions. In the past we talked a lot about “women’s issues,” such as mentoring others, leadership development and work/ life balance. But delegates told us these issues are frequently covered, so this year we’re discussing substantive business issues such as the Five Year Plan, innovation in China, and many other serious issues. In the winter, we organize a WIB Leadership Forum. Half of that is structured in a conference format, where we talk mainly about leadership. The afternoon half is a series of training and productivity workshops. We’ve found that this format is the most effective. Our spring season is the highlight: the Women in Business Leadership Awards. This year we had more than 150 women in the audience as almost 20 women received leadership awards. We have online voting and on-site voting for these awards, plus a judging panel. Nominees share their experiences and thoughts about inspiration, achievement and teambuilding – fun and educational too! What are some of the issues that women in business in Beijing face? The biggest issue women in China face is the reluctance to take credit for their successes. We had over 100 women who were nomi-

nated for the Leadership Awards, but “fear of the spotlight” meant that less than 25 of these women accepted the nomination. On the other hand, when we invite men to speak at our events, they reply, “You only want me to speak at one event?” To get just one Chinese woman to speak, we need to email and call and generally pester at least ﬁfteen other women. Ladies, please be more conﬁdent in your own achievements!

You’ve got your finger on Beijing’s business pulse. What are the three key skills that women in business need to develop? Network, network, network. The vast majority of China’s growth in the past 20 years has been playing catch-up with the developed world – everyone in China has been riding the crest of a wave. So many people in China are doing things at 30 that people in the US don’t get the chance to do until they’re 50 or older. At some point this growth will slow down, and so many people who have high-level jobs will need to demonstrate that they have the matching skill sets that go with these senior level positions. This is why women in China need to continue to develop and grow their soft skills, management skills, and leadership skills. Right now, there’s a lot of embarrassed executives who only occupy such senior positions simply because the company can’t ﬁnd anyone else with experience.

What sort of advice would you give a young woman starting her professional career? Don’t ever be afraid of being called a bitch. Only when women can take the negative connotation of the word and reinterpret this to mean “someone who gets things done” can they move into more senior positions. The word ‘bitch’ is scary to hear, but it’s an unfortunate fact that women need to rise past it and ﬂourish despite the derogation. Another thing that women need to do is bring other women with them when they rise through the corporate ranks on their way to the top. This seems unfair, but in reality, men have been doing this for generations. It’s payback time! Finally, women need to have a long-term career plan that gets them out of women-dominated vocations such as HR, communications and PR, and other support functions. The only way to become the CEO, or to get close is to have a revenue-generating or proﬁt / loss job. Many women – many people, really – are afraid of stepping outside of their comfort zone, but this is absolutely crucial. A wide set of experiences is so important. Remember, being CEO nets you both a rewarding job and a fat paycheck!

Who are your favorite female entrepreneurs in Beijing? Without doubt, my favorite is Alicia Zhou, winner of 2011 Entrepreneur of the Year Award. She is only 23 years old and already has started several companies. She is the quintessential example of a woman who 广告DM

What are your favorite Beijing restaurants and bars to do business in? I work too much to go out! My favorite place is at home in front of the TV as my ayi serves up some good old fashioned jiachangcai. Of course I’ll have a bottle of Yanjing by my side!
