AGENDA

Letter from the editor At Greenpeace, part of what we do is fighting toxic water pollution. We have visited almost a hundred textile factories. We dig out which brands are responsible for polluting our rivers; we expose them and with consumers, we call for the brands and policy makers in China to change their behavior. Last year, we exposed the suppliers of a long list of famous brands were discharging toxic chemicals into our rivers, including Calvin Klein, Abercrombie & Fitch, Youngor, Nike, Adidas, Li Ning, and H&M. The common question from the industry or the media is “Can we afford to change?” The real question for me is “Can we afford not to change?” The fact is a quarter of the population does not have access to safe drinking water because our rivers and lakes in China are polluted. We had paid the price for the incredible economic growth. How long do we want our children to live in a place where we cannot trust the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat? If a brand or supplier can only survive by using toxic chemicals and polluting our waterways, that is surely a bad business to run. Fortunately corporations are responding to the people’s call. Our report got over 50 million hits on the internet in China, and around the globe hundreds of thousands of people help us to pass on the message or writing to the brands themselves. So far, six brands have already made a public commitment to eliminate all toxic chemicals from their global supply chain – they are Puma, Nike, Adidas, H&M, Li Ning and C&A. We won’t stop until pollution ends and we need you to join us. We are the problem and we are also the solution. Start with little things to make change happen: think twice before buying cheap clothes, switch off the light when you finish work, or join Greenpeace or other green groups to challenge the polluters. Small action from each individual counts. This is the lesson from every person profiled in this issue of Agenda: if we all change our lifestyle for the better, the difference will be huge. Together, they have great stories and lessons about environmental concerns in Beijing today. Enjoy reading, and let’s make a difference.

Spotlight Wang Kai is a student environmental campaigner, who worked as a “climate champion” for the British Council in China. Conducting research on the effect of climate change on villages in Ningxia province, he was part of a team presenting their findings at the COP (Conference of Parties) 17 UN climate summit in Durban, South Africa, in December 2011. Part of a new generation finding their voice and having a positive effect on society, he told Agenda how he got started and how he sees China’s current environmental struggles.

Climate Champion

Wang Kai, student environmental campaigner Text by Mike Cormack, photo courtesy of Adam Pillsbury

How did you became interested in environmental campaigning? I’m a sophomore at the University of International Relations, majoring in International Economics. I started to receive education about environmental protection at a very young age, in concepts like saving water and electricity. Not until 2008 did I get further involved in this field, after attending a competition organized by the British Council, which is when I realized environmental campaigning is far more than turning off the light. I found pleasure in it, it revealed a corner of the real world to me, and then I kept going. How did you become involved with the British Council? The British Council has a project called Green Your School (GYS), in which students in high school are encouraged to organize

After passing the first round, I got a chance for the interview inside the British Council office, then, I became one of the climate champions (at that time we were called young ambassador). My life changed. What does being a “Climate Champion” involve? Being a Climate Champion means you are always on the call list of the British Council. We are obliged to increase public awareness of climate change, to let the public realize what they can do and why they should do to tackle climate change. Delivering the voice of youth to anyone concerned, such as the government, the media, the public etc. is also one of our major

Have you seen any positive outcomes as a result of the report? It’s hard to give an accurate answer to this question. In China the positive outcome means you get the government and experts to approve your study, and we did get that. What do you think is the most important task for the Chinese environment? Do you feel optimistic that it can be achieved? In my point of view, the Chinese environment will remain unsafe unless we can find an environmentally friendly way of developing. The contradiction between environment protection and development lead to most of the current problems in Chinese environment. I believe we can achieve this someday, but not the coming five years. What areas are you currently working on? I am doing a project to study the influence of the population on the development of rural areas. We have a lot of projects to develop the clean energy to replace thermal power energy, which may have a good original intention, but do more damage to the environment in the end, such as

AGENDA

What are Chinese youth’s attitudes towards environment issues? We can see many young people active in the work of environmental protection, especially, or only, before they enter university. Students in high school often show great interest in environmental protection work, and devote most of their time to it. In contrast, students in universities are much more apathetic, many even appear to despise to this kind of work, they think it’s ridiculous. It might be upsetting to talk about this, but this is what I’ve observed. It’s not solely a matter of the environment; it’s education, social orientation, concept of value and many other related things. We need to make a difference from an earlier stage. It’s too complex to be solved by a single group of people; we need the whole society to wake up.

Climate Connector

ClearWorld Media founder Steve Chiu on merging social media and environmental awareness Interview by Jerry Chan, photo by Sui

Canadian Steve Chiu has blazed many digital trails in Beijing, including co-founding Zhaopin. com, working on new media initiatives with The Economist Group and consulting for a variety of online organizations working in areas ranging from publishing to online education and the environment. His latest project is ClearWorld Media – a climate-related internet company that recently released PicPic, an innovative, photo-based social gaming app for the iPhone. We spoke with Steve about his industry experience and how he hopes to help fight climate change through social media. What’s your background and how did you end up in Beijing? I was born and raised in Newfoundland, Canada. I ended up in Beijing in summer of 1993 after my Chinese grandfather, who went to the Philippines from Fujian, passed away on June 2, 1989 – while waiting for family to come over from Asia for his funeral I watched events unfold in Beijing and then it all just came together for me like that. Three years later I thought I’d come to Beijing and learn Chinese for a year – that was almost 18 years ago. How did you come to start Zhaopin. com, one of China’s leading job recruitment sites? I started that site with my good friend Mark Baldwin, who had built a great headhunting business with blue chip clients like Shell and Nokia – he’s still in the recruitment business in China with his own company called Oxus. We had success at placing senior executives within these companies, but then our clients started asking us to help them find midlevel and junior staff, so we decided to start a recruitment web site and were actually one of the first in China. Spotlight Beijing’s air quality and the standards used to measure it have been of international focus ever since the Beijing Olympics and the “crazy bad” reading from the US Embassy Twitter feed. Spotlight Staying healthy and going green in Beijing might seem like a Herculean task, especially in a city where health and safety guidelines take the back seat to develop the economy. Nevertheless there are those idealistic souls who persevere to do their part in saving the environment and leading a healthier and more natural lifestyle to boot. Laura Fanelli of The Veggie Table is one such stalwart, and gave us some practical tips on going green in Beijing.

It’s Easy Being Green

The Veggie Table’s Laura Fanelli gives her tips on eco-friendly living Interview by Joana Melo, photo courtesy of Laura Fanelli

What are the biggest problems people face living green in Beijing? The biggest problem is probably the lack of information and education, both on the part of the vendors and consumers. People assume that boiling water makes it safe, but in fact the things that you should be worried about are those that make Beijing’s water uninhabitable for bacteria. Then there are contaminants, which get mixed up in our food because things we cook them in, and serve them on, are not made with good materials. If you want to be really healthy and green in Beijing, there is a lot to learn!

the water to kill bacteria. At the Veggie Table we even wash our veggies in filtered water to ensure that they are extra safe and healthy. In the restaurant, we use an Aquasana filter, which is the leading choice and comes complete with a pre-filter tailored for China, since the water quality is so different here and there is a lot of sediment in the water. The nice thing about it is that it keeps some minerals in the water. At home I have a reverse osmosis filter from Midea, which removes everything from the water, so you have to make sure that you keep your mineral levels up. Any major brand should be fine, really, but you have to make sure that So let’s start with the water. What do you do at least one of the filters is active carbon. I also for clean drinking water? term expat should not skimp on is an indoor air filter. I did a lot of research and ended up buying an IQAir. It wasn’t cheap, for sure, but I feel it will save me some hospital bills down the line, and this way, I can get at least 7 hours of clean air every day. I also make sure to wear a face mask if the pollution levels are high. I haven’t found the perfect mask yet, but I quite like ResproSportsa for any outdoor activities, and I take it out when air pollution is above 100. Although it tends to slip a bit they have the best filters, to my knowledge, although I don’t like how their straps go behind your neck and not behind your ears, like the cheap but good N95 filter from 3M does. What other tips do you have for controlling our output? Well, green living covers lots of things. At The Veggie Table, and at home, I buy a lot of natural and recycled products, like recycled napkins, which is what we use in the restaurant. We are also composting all vegetable products, and return them back to the organic farms our veggies come from. I have met a lot of people who have started their own worm or EM composts at home. Another easy way to control your output is to buy less, since every new item has to be made. The Freecycle community in Beijing is active, and it’s a great way to get things you need and unload things you don’t, saving the environmental cost of another product. Roundabout is also a great second hand shop, and if you’re making a donation, you can drop the things off at Links Relocation in Dongzhimen Oriental Kenzo. Most local charities are also happy to take gently-used items off of your hands. What about cleaning and personal products? Are there any brands you prefer? I just discovered this company called Organic Earth, who makes organic soaps locally. For hand and shower soap, I use homemade castile soap, which is nice because you can add your own essential oils. You’re going to laugh, but The Veggie Table has never thrown away a drop of used oil! We are in the process of making soap

out of it. My chef came to me the other day and told me I need to rent a separate room because she’s sick of all the bottles sitting around. If any of your readers have some storage space near Wudaoying that they’d like to trade for soap, have them get in touch with me! [laughs] Soapnuts are another great, natural way to get clean. They are ideal for laundry, and you just take a couple, tie them up with a sock, and throw them into the machine. You can also simmer them to make liquid soap, although that will need to be refrigerated. The liquid soap can be used for cleaning, dish washing, or even for shampoo! It is nice to store it in a foam dispenser so it doesn’t run all over when you need to use it. For stains and disinfecting, hydrogen peroxide works wonders, and in the restaurant, we use either that or high acidity vinegar to clean the tables. If you want a more efficient laundry detergent, you can make your own liquid laundry gel from borax, washing powder and bar soap. Baking soda is great for scouring and deodorizing. The Veggie Table is a vegan restaurant – how does that fit with being green? Well, meat production uses an enormous amount of water and dumps large amounts of chemicals, hormones and waste into rivers and groundwater. It’s not really sustainable or efficient, and that’s what we are really about at The Veggie Table. We work with organic farms to source most of our vegetables, and really try to encourage farmers who grow in a safe and responsible way. Organic and vegan food was a really hard concept for some of my staff to grasp, but now that they are beginning to understand the bigger picture, they are really excited about it as well.

the List There’s not much point living in a city of 20-million if you don’t occasionally take some time out to ogle, gawk and generally spectate. There’s so much to see here, and such a breadth of experience to observe, that the simple act of taking a walk in the park or around your own neighborhood can be a fascinating adventure. Agenda does its fair share of people watching and we offer these recomendations of some of the best spots around town to watch the world go by.

Watching You Watching Me

The best places to people watch Text by Mike Cormack

One of the unusual, or at least different, things about China from many countries in the West is how public much of daily life is. From the older generation doing their morning tai chi to parks filled with singers to streetside chuan’r joints patronized by all ages, it’s filled with people doing what they do outdoors, and the spectacle can be captivating to the point of being nearly overwhelming. While gawking at misfortunes like traffic accidents or street brawls isn’t to be promoted, there are certain hot spots around the city, focal points of various activities, where people watching is definitely part of the fun. Here’s some of the best. The Village at Sanlitun The Village at Sanlitun is a Mecca for young fashionable people, both local and expat. The hip stores, the abundance of restaurants, the plethora of bars: this is a place offering the fulfillment of all kinds of desires. Here is where young Western men go on the

20

AGENDA

prowl, hawkers and touts compete for your billfolds, giggly groups of young women gather and tourists wander cluelessly searching for discount clothes and DVDs - making The Village ideal for all manner of people-watching. My favorite vantage point is the fresh juice bar next to the Village Square. Few places offer such an interesting cross section of society on a warm spring afternoon. Houhai Houhai is perhaps one of Beijing’s great lost causes. Its scenic setting is wonderful – the lights encircling the lake twinkle pleasingly on the water in the evening - but the gawdy commercial venues, in the form of the innumerable and undistinguishable bars circling the lakes, are for the most part, awful. Nevertheless Houhai is an extremely popular place for people to take a walk in the evening, particularly for locals. This is where young Beijing goes courting on breezy spring and summer evenings and taken

in controlled doses, is a great place to people watch. Nearby Nanluoguxiang, with its gaggle of café-hopping hutong hipsters (see 798 below) and younger tourists is another prime peoplewatching spot. Wangfujing Schedenfraude (“shameful joy”: taking pleasure in other people’s misfortunes) is of course a bad thing, and Agenda does not approve of it. But it has to be said, if you’ve lived in Beijing for a while, watching tourists being feasted upon by the stall-holders and shops in Wangfujing can be entertaining. The sights of Beijing newbies being suckered into spending RMB 100 on cheap scarves or t-shirts, the sellers saying endless catechisms like “Hello my friend, bag you want?” and the guileless way in which tourists happily pay outrageous prices can be quite bemusing. In a way, being aware of the ploys of Wangfujing is a good thing: you’re no longer fooled by the obvious tourist-baiting ruses and you’re a step closer to settling into Beijing. 798 Ah, the arts! Whether poetry, painting, novels, documentaries, Photoshop designs, acting, singing, or performing: there’s nothing like the exhilaration of observing someone in full control of their artistic medium. But as any genuine artist will tell you, mastery of an art form requires dedication, sincerity and humility. This does not always make for easy social interactions: you know what it’s like talking to someone whose musical knowledge is embarrassingly vast? Every reference point you have feels childish or trivial in comparison. Fortunately, there are

ample quantities of hipsters in Beijing. Ironically fashionable, or fashionable ironic?, in their outsized glasses, ironic facial hair (men) or multicolor tights (women), they have themselves created the square root of zero, but still infest every artistic and cultural center the world over. Giggle as they name drop and compete for cool points. Entertain yourself by inventing imaginary bands or writers, and watch how they tell you how they used to like “DJ Death Star” or “Psykotrane Kandy Krush” in their less commercial period. The Gym The Romans had slave auctions where the free rated the serfs upon their appearance. In these more civilized days, we have gyms, where everyone can judge and rate each other. From disco-bunny college girls to ludicrously beefcaked Chinese guys to wiry martial artists to porky Western men trying to keep middle age away, the dynamics are multitudinous and fascinating. It all helps to keep your mind occupied while you build up a sweat, let’s put it that way. Networking Events Though these can indeed be valuable events in which meaningful connections are established and perhaps real friendships begun, there can be a certain excruciating quality to them. Rubbernecking, inane smalltalk, gauche interactions, absurd claims: meeting people within a group of strangers often reveals humanity at its worst, striving for distinction with a human zoo. Why not hit the bar, have some wine and watch the proceedings with detached amusement? At least you’ll come away with some comical nuggets of human interaction, if nothing else.

Toxic Avenger

Li Yifang, Greenpeace Activist, Detoxing China Text by Rachel Chen, photo by Sui

Greenpeace is perhaps the best known environmental NGO. It does sterling work throughout the world in measuring and combating environmental degradation and raising awareness of ecological issues. Their activists are dedicated to making the world a safer and healthier place for our children, which is all the more important in the world’s most dynamic country? Agenda was delighted to meet Li Yifang, whose work focuses on toxic pollution and striving to ameliorate its destructive effects, to hear her story. Can you tell us how you came to work with Greenpeace? Both my Bachelors and Masters degrees are related to the environment. When I was a college student, my major was Environmental Science; and then I went to London School of Economics to study Environmental Policy. All my work experience is from environmental NGOs. In 2006, when working for another NGO, I attended an event by Greenpeace, and when I walked into the room, I saw many pictures about the environment on the wall. One picture really caught my attention because it showed that this fragile earth of ours needs a voice, so I felt that I should come here to work. So that was how I get involved with Greenpeace. What is the role of an activist in Greenpeace? Is it a mixture of campaigner, educator and researcher? At Greenpeace you can either be a volunteer or member as an activist, as long as you have your heart set on helping the environment. My job title is a campaigner, which has several parts. One is a research reporter, which means I find problems and report them in a way the general public understands. Another is more like strategic planning, thinking about what I can do to best change the current situation and influence certain government departments. The third is related to media, such as launching campaigns, doing press conferences, or interacting

22

AGENDA

with friends online or on Weibo. The last part of my job is related to enterprises. I negotiate with them on what they should do; if they do not do it, we need to see what other actions we need to take on that in order to change them. What developed your interest in toxicity? Did you come to it from a Chinese perspective, or do you think more globally? My interest in toxicity comes from a Chinese perspective. When we went to villages, we saw farmers using polluted water to water crops. In a situation like this, Chinese people don’t dare to breathe, eat or wear certain clothes because of the polluted materials. We will all die from toxicity if we don’t change this situation. What have been the major campaigns you have been working? I’ve been working on a global campaign for Greenpeace for almost a year called DETOX, which means to eliminate toxicity. We focus on the textile industry, where we see toxic materials being used and dumped into rivers, and absorbed into our clothes. When customers buy those clothes and wash them, the polluted water will remain in the city of Beijing, or even London or Paris. As long as those toxic materials are being used when producing clothes, the polluted water will flow everywhere. This is why we have this global campaign called Dirty Laundry which is about unraveling the corporate connections to toxic water pollution in China. What have been some of the worst polluted rivers or lakes that you have seen? What caused them, and what were the reactions? It’s hard to say which river or lake has been the most polluted. For example, Xintang in Guangdong Province produces jeans, and all rivers there are blue, exactly the same color as the jeans. Locals and people working in the factories told us that men in the printing and dyeing industry are re-

productively challenged because of the toxicity, which also makes children mature early sexually and causes breast cancer in women. The workers constantly change jobs so it’s difficult to determine what causes these problems. Moreover, the factories only hire workers who already had kids. Beijing moved its heavy industries to the outskirts prior the Olympics. Is it enough to spread out heavy industries, or do some processes cause problems wherever they are? If it’s a factory, the pollution exists wherever it goes. The polluted factories in coastal area of Guangdong have been moving to the central Guangdong so the pollution has also been moved to the central area. Have there been any companies or areas working to really clear up their practices? Six global brands including Puma, Nike, Adidas, H&M, Li Ning and C&A have made promises to be environmentally friendly and we are supervising them with their customers. There are no eternal enemies when it comes to businesses. When they do something good we ask other enterprises to follow them; and when they do something bad we criticize them. We are totally independent and have no partnership with any of them. Without wanting to ask you to give too much away, are you able to operate freely in China? Are environmental NGOs like Greenpeace encouraged? We feel that the government has acknowledged what we have done all these years. During the UN Climate Conference, the Chinese government came to us and said that we are on the same side when it comes to environmental and climate issues. We certainly have encountered difficulties, such as some news not being allowed to be reported. We have pressure because not everything we do is encouraged by the government. As China develops, how do you see its environmental future? Are you optimistic, or otherwise? As a Chinese citizen, I have to stay positive about our environment future and I’m sure something can be done to change it.

Getting It Organic

Tianle Chang of Beijing Farmer’s Market Text by Mike Cormack, photo by Sui

Tianle Chang is a native Beijinger who is part of the collective organizing the Beijing Farmer’s Market, which has been giving people in the capital access to organic food and agriculture produce for two years now. Working for the Institute of Agricultural Policy, a US-based NGO, she has a real knowledge of and passion for sustainable development. She told us about the aims and practices of the Beijing Farmer’s Market, a focal point for pure, natural food in the city.

24

AGENDA

Tell me about the farmer’s markets – where were they, who first organized them, what products were sold there? These are mobile markets, selling produce from organic farmers, most of whom are around 100-150km outside Beijing. The first ones started in May 2010, and were bi-monthly, then monthly and now are held weekly in different locations throughout Beijing. It would be ideal to have

a fixed location, but we find people are willing in a dirty market. But once they get to know how we do things they also get into it. to travel across Beijing to get to us. How did you get involved, and what is your role? I got introduced to the Farmer’s Market through friends. I lived in New York for two years from 2007, studying for a Masters in International Affairs, researching organic sustainable agriculture, so I was interested in it already, then an engineer friend and others got me involved. I guess I’m a coordinator, getting everything organized and coordinated. It’s all quite freewheeling and selfnominating; we don’t have a specific organizational structure, but we do have five people who work together to arrange it all. One does the venues, one the farmers, one NGOs, and so on, while I also do press. I do it not just because I think it’s about the food. Organic farming is an important part of sustainable agriculture which is really important here in China. It creates more jobs in rural areas, promotes sustainable development, and helps the environment and to promote social justice. Who’s in charge it all? We’re just in the process of putting together a committee to run it and represent all the relevant sections, like farmers, consumers, and NGOs. The famers are elected by their peers. This is to create a participatory guarantee system, where the people involved set the rules themselves and abide by them, rather than having an external body come to assess them. This method is getting more popular as its cheaper than government certification, more transparent and the public trusts it more, which is always an issue here in China. Who are the typical customers? It’s mostly middle class locals and foreigners, especially families. Also there are young people, who are into the organic thing and for whom it’s part of their whole lifestyle: it becomes like a social event. They don’t buy so much raw produce but they like the prepared foods. Recently older locals have been increasingly coming – once they know the principles they really appreciate it. Your average locals still tend to think of shopping for food in markets as almost backwards, old-fashioned – like how their parents used to shop, with all this dirty food

What farmers sell there? How do you decide who could sell at the market? Initially we invited five or six quite famous organic farmers who had all been operating that way for about 10 years. But as we’ve expanded, new farmer have approached us to take part. We have to make sure they’re truly organic, so there’s a two-step process. First, we talk to the farmer, and find out why they want to get involved. Is it business or do they support the ideals of the market? We only choose those who have the same ideals. Then when we’re comfortable with each other, we go out to visit the farm. We need to know, do they have the right skills, the right people, do they practice what they preach? So now there are nearly 20 farmers involved. What products are sold? There’s all kind of things. There’s things like raw vegetables, meat, and eggs – it’s not vegetarian, just organic. Also there’s people who make and sell things like fried cheese, Chinese rice wine, sausages, jam, fresh herbs, mint vinegar, handmade soap, and essential oils. There’s a project called Country Fair Kitchen where people buy food from the farmers and cook things beforehand to sell during the market to help us cover costs; and there’s also a florist who prepares flowers to sell onsite, for the same purpose. How are things priced? They’re reasonable but inevitably they’re not as cheap as other markets. They are however cheaper than organic food in supermarkets! So raw produce is about 10/20 RMB per jin, while eggs can be 2-2.5 per egg, chicken 40 RMB a jin, strawberries 4-80 RMB a jin, and so on. You have to shop around the different stalls – you don’t haggle like in the Silk Market, but you can find good deals. Most of the really good stuff goes within an hour of the market opening, so you have to move fast. How do you promote the markets? We have a weibo feed, 北京有机农夫市集 at http://weibo. com/farmersmarketbj and a Facebook page, facebook.com/farmersmarketbj, where we tell people the time and location of each market.

Spotlight Maintaining the plush hospitality of a major hotel is perhaps not the most energy efficient endeavor: almost all functions have to be ready and available at all times. Consequently, their energy footprints are considerable, collectively aggregating towards a major environmental impact. But some hotel managers are striking back, nudging staff and guests towards smarter, greener behavior. Charlie Dang, area managing director at the Westin Beijing Financial Street, told Agenda about his “Green Room” program.

We enjoy meeting people and listening to their life experiences.

Ichikura Whiskey fans in Beijing are not spoiled for choice, but the options that do exist are of a pleasingly high quality. Ichikura, while not easy to find (you go into the Chaoyang Theatre courtyard then up the outside stairway), is a jewel in the capital’s drinking crown, with a remarkable range of Scottish, Japanese and US malts. The hand-carved ice and the delicious cocktails also make Ichikura a destination of choice for all discerning drinkers. MC 2/F (entrance via stairs at south wall of Chaoyang Theater), Chaoyang Theater, 36 Dongsanhuan Beilu, Chaoyang District (6507 1107) 朝阳区东三环北路36号朝阳剧场南侧 Perfect for savoring Scotch – what else? Signature drinks include martinis and fine aged whiskys that are a steal compared to other whisky bars. While in the neighborhood, drop by Havana Club to try from their 22 varieties of rum.

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell In Blink, Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point, explores the extraordinarily perceptive and deceptive power of the subconscious. Gladwell posits that decisions made very quickly can be every bit as good as a decision made cautiously and deliberately; our unconscious mind often delivers better answers than more painstaking ways of thinking. But rather than merely praising intuition, Gladwell is interested in those moments when our instincts betray us, where our powers of rapid cognition go awry. Gladwell shows us that people’s appearance - size, shape, color or sex - can trigger powerful associations which explain why utter mediocrities can sometimes end up in positions of enormous responsibility; or why tall people earn substantially more than their shorter colleagues. The stories, scientific findings and psychological tests are consistently surprising.

My Perfect Day in Beijing

Miranda Mullet, Co-founder of My China Opportunity Interview by Mike Cormack, Photo by Sui

With my super-duper pollution vaporizer, I would zap the pollution away for the day. With a day of endless blue skies, my vintage bifocalsturned-sunglasses (from Panjiayuan) in hand, and a cup of warm soy milk, I would start my day. I would head straight to the Muxiyuan Fabric Market, where I would pick up some silk to be created into a dress for this Friday’s Internations dinner event. I would then head home where my personal chef has tamales and calabacita tacos waiting. After lunch, I would create a recycled self- watering plant container for my chinaliving.org blog. As a person trying to live a sustainable lifestyle, I would also make sure the worms in my vermicomposting bin are fed the leftover vegetable scraps from the preparation of my lunch. Because Flamme’s blue cheese stuffed olive martinis are to die for, I would head there for cocktail hour. I would be joined by my designer friend Sarah (blog.sarahcolobong.com) and Christopher (the owner of My China Opportunity: an internship placement company). With our recycled fashion show coming up in July, many things still need to be planed and organized. While enjoying our martinis, we would finish choosing the designers we want to work with and upload their profiles to www.lajicouture.com After cocktail hour we would be helicoptered to a remote area of the Great Wall, where we would enjoy a catered dinner from Modo. After
