Letter from the editor Beijing is bustling with business ideas. And not only this city, but many more across China. By 2015 nearly a third of China’s population will be under 30 – and they are expected to be the growth engine of its high speed economy. Its young expats are in many ways already doing that. The Middle Kingdom isn’t always the easiest of places to do business, but it attracts a resilient type to come and start up here. Young entrepreneurs with young companies are taking innovative new concepts and bringing them to market in a successful way. What attracts a young entrepreneur to the world’s second largest economy? The answer is partly in the question. Beijing, and indeed China, is still a growing market - a place where there is scope for a new take on existing business ideas, or just new ideas. Old ways of doing things and received wisdom in the business world can often be sidestepped by young entrepreneurs with a receptive audience. And this in part is why we decide, or indeed are even inspired, to do business here. Whether it’s a start up providing sustainable energy consulting to Chinese companies, a young business helping young Chinese apply to study abroad or a funky music outfit targeting Beijing’s hipsters: our market is engaged and ready to try new things. As an online business focused on providing products and services to Beijing’s expat community I have met many of this city’s young entrepreneurs and one thing has struck me about all of them: creativity. Beijing is a place where creative ideas can and do flourish. And it’s a place where you can re-invent yourself. Take me as an example, a former PR man in the UK turned online startup entrepreneur in China. In this issue, you can meet some of the bright young things who are setting out to change the way we all do business in China. It takes a lot to bring an idea to fruition, and the young entrepreneurs in this issue are no exception. You’ll hear their stories, their challenges, and most importantly, the visions of some young rainmakers in China’s capital. And, you never know, maybe they’ll convince you to dust off your notebook and start planning your own business.

English and Chinese entrepreneurs in their midtwenties, Paul Afshar and AJ met in Beijing and founded ijustwannabuy.com, a group-buying website with a twist. Catering to expats deprived of their familiar consumer items, the firm was set up to make it both easier and cheaper to get the things you miss from home. With a niche customer base and innovative marketing, Paul and AJ have built the company and look set to make life in Beijing easier. Agenda talked with them about life as young entrepreneurs. So how did the idea of ijustwannabuy come about? PA: The expat life in Beijing is quite good, but it can be tough. It takes time to get used to the essential customs of this country. AJ and I were looking at what was fitting to Beijing to sell products. Some things are expensive, some things aren’t. For example, I listen to music in the morning, but when I came to Beijing, electronics can be three times the price compared to the UK. Basically, we wanted to set up an online service to give discounts to trusted brands and convenience products. AJ: My previous working experience was where companies provide services for expats or their kids. While working there, I saw my foreign friends and customers complaining about where to find digital products in good quality with a Chinese price. So I had this idea of selling something similar. Did you fund ijustwannabuy yourselves or did you get VC funding? PA: We had the idea to do it ourselves, but if you want to make it work, you have to get cash. The advantage to setting up a business like ours is that the costs are basically your website and marketing, so you can keep it relatively low. We thought when we started to plan it, let’s put a certain amount of money in to do it. The problem is that there’re always things to spend money on!

Sites like Groupon have come to an unhappy ending in China - how do you avoid that? PA: My perception of these websites in China is that there’s huge competition and they invested a lot of money on marketing, and unit revenue you get from a sale is low so you have to sell a lot. But in order to sell a lot there has to be a lot of marketing. We are a social platform compared to other group-buying sites. In the Chinese sites, most people just want to buy cheap but that doesn’t guarantee good quality or brands. Our target customers are unique, expats with relatively high disposable income that don’t just look for cheap stuff. In a lot of Chinese websites, they have had scandals about fake products. These scandals lose credibility for group buying websites. For us, we have a niche market, so we add another value because we provide a real service as well. How do you make deals with suppliers, when China’s already got an enormous domestic market? PA: Given our market, some of our business comes from companies who want to target expats, so they come to us . They may be fairly successful already, but they might have a quiet period, maybe during the winter or perhaps at the end of the business day when they just want to get a fuller flow of customers coming in. So that’s exactly where we can help. We’ve got a strong database connecting with expats. We can help to deliver market business to them, and of course we give our customers discounts. AJ: Our market is small and unique, but when businesses start to deal with us, they are not only giving discounts for this one coupon. They need to know that some new customers want to try them out and the customers that we’ve got might be regular, stable customers, which is slightly different from the Chinese websites.
PA: Previous conversations about business we’ve had were with expats who are brand loyal. They would try something with a coupon, and if they liked it, they would use that business again. It’s a bit different to the Chinese market. We can say to businesses that customers will come back because they are brand loyal, and that attracts them. What is the one thing you wish you’d known beforehand? PA: If I were to start again, I would make sure I know how to get the attention of businesses and how to build a website. AJ: For me, I wish I would’ve known IT or how to build a website; we’re still learning. I wish I could just tell programmers “we want this done in this way”. We go back and forth and spend a lot of time on it. It’s time consuming for us but it’s turned out well so far. I wish I could manage those skills!
What marketing tools do you use? PA: What we call marketing has a lot to do with social media. We did a flashmob in Sanlitun that we organized. Everyone came to Sanlitun, and did “high fives” - then we all had a few drinks afterwards. We got a lot of contacts that way. We want to do fun stuff. AJ: We want to use social media to help us. We try to do fun things, we have flash mobs and we are going to do a bar party soon; we combine things like that with raising money for charities. It all gets your name out there.
What are the biggest issues that entrepreneur face in Beijing? PA: Website registration is the key issue. You have to follow the processes, correctly. AJ: With entrepreneurship, you have to know everything by yourself; sometimes it can be very overwhelming while sometimes very satisfying. That’s the biggest challenge but also the best part of starting a business.

Which of the DJs/bands you’ve promoted is the most well-known or successful with the Chinese audience? It’s has to be Goldie. We brought him out for the first time in 2005 and it was a watershed moment for The Syndicate. It was an amazing feeling to watch a packed venue going crazy to one of the world’s best-known electronic music pioneers. We’ve since had Goldie back twice more and he has a huge China following. He’s such a massive personality that aside from his musical prowess people seem to feed off him being in the room. He’s even acquired a Chinese nickname – 大金牙. How do you rate the Beijing music infrastructure nowadays? What does it need to be a world-class music city? I think it has all the right ingredients but needs time to become a cohesive scene. People love a performance here and it’s just a matter of how much access they can get to those performances. I look forward to the day when there’s a Beijing equivalent of the Notting Hill Carnival and you can hear music on the streets of Chaoyang. How have the internet and weibo affected how you operate? Social media is fantastic for creating a buzz. I use weibo fairly heavily and we also rely on Facebook to draw in the expat community. Having said that, I’m still a die-hard fan of the paper flyer and A2 poster. I think people respond to picking up something physical containing evocative artwork. Social media helps a lot with awareness but when you have a street team who are all manically and genuinely excited about the gig in question, their personal touch is what gets the crowds through the door. What’s your advice for aspiring young entrepreneurs in Beijing? If you’re looking to start a business, you’re in the right place. I’ve found Beijing a very fertile environment with more than its fair share of entrepreneurs. Typically they have all seen the whole range of success, failure, setbacks and victories. Surround yourself with the right people and get as much advice as you can so that every decision is an informed one. But only you can decide what to do with the advice and that’s the exciting part of starting your own business!

Beijing is blessed with an astonishing variety of eating options, from street-side chuan’r to elegant high-end dining, from African to Anhui, from hotpot to Hungarian. Yet the pleasure of preparing a fine meal for guests is something that never fades, and there’s just something special about offering hospitality: welcoming people into your home welcomes them into your life. But Beijing often makes things harder than they need be, so here’s how to simplify and de-stress when hosting a dinner party. Prepare (part 1) Sure, you’re a good cook back home, where you’ve got a kitchen full of utensils and ingredients accumulated over numerous years. But unless you’ve shipped the entire contents of your house over, chances are you’ll be short of things you’re

accustomed to having. Then, too, there’s the question of buying the food. It might be easy back home to pick up cayenne pepper or double cream, but such everyday tasks are not so straightforward here. When you’re planning a menu, think ahead and check that the utensils (lemon juicer? roasting tin?) and ingredients (cannelloni? capers?) you need can be found easily. Check out Ikea and higher-end supermarkets like BHG to stock up on these. But “incubators” – tailored programs to help entrepreneurs accelerate their development – are out there in Beijing, and Agenda shares the lowdown on the best.

Three Incubators To Hothouse Your Startup Text by Mike Cormack
Budding entrepreneurs sometimes need help in getting their project off the ground. Successful enterprises are testament not only to the quality of the ideas they develop, but also to the fertility of the soil in which they develop, as measured by ease of access to funding, protection of intellectual property, cost of labor and resources, and the education and creativity of the workforce (amongst myriad other measures). The fervent Chinese appreciation of Apple products led to some agonizing over whether China can produce similarly alluring products and what it needs to do as a country to produce such successful entrepreneurs. Beijing is naturally a central hub for industry and creativity in the Middle Kingdom and there are several projects and programs which hothouse startups in the capital. These “incubators” are ideal resources if you’ve got an idea and want to make it happen. Go check ‘em out.

Spark:Her This incubator inspires and accelerates both talented and promising female social entrepreneurs, developing the abilities and prospects of women at the early stages of starting a social enterprise through a one-year program. Spark:Her is unique amongst Beijing incubators for its focus on women, which is doubly unusual given the male dominance in business in Asia and often in entrepreneurial circles. With 10 weeks of weekly sessions equipping candidates with the tools, knowledge and business network to launch their enterprises, Spark:Her is complemented by a further eight months of mentoring, workshops and peer-support group from former attendees and other social entrepreneurs. Candidates must have proficiency in English and Chinese, be able to attend all sessions in Beijing, have a firm business idea and taken steps to launch it, and have a specific, measurable breakthrough result which they want to accomplish during the program. Eric Wang (王一禾 ), James Hu (胡怀之), Jeff Hsu (许伟捷) recently formed Wodache, a social mobile startup helping to make taxi rides in the capital more fun and efficient, and they told Agenda how it’ll all work. What’s your background prior to Wodache? Eric Wang: I went to University of Washington and Columbia University in New York. Before becoming co-founder of Wodache, I worked in Merrill Lynch for a year as an Investment Banking Analyst. James Hu: I graduated from University of Washington and worked in Microsoft and Groupon before joining Wodache. Jeff Hsu: I am a Chinese American. I graduated from University of California at Berkeley and majored in Computer & Electronic Engineering. I worked for Apple in India before became a part of Wodache. How did you guys decide to work together? Eric: James and I were high school friends in Seattle. When the idea of Wodache occurred to me, I talked with him and he got really enthusiastic. We

kept Skyping each other about how to build a social network site, then James quit his job with Microsoft in the US and came to work for Groupon in China, so that two of us could have more time to talk about it. Jeff: I met these guys in Beijing. I thought their ideas were insane, but you know, I am a crazy person, too, so we just clicked. While I was working for Apple in India, I was not really satisfied with what I was doing. To me, technology should be to make people’s life better and easier. When I met them, I knew that this could be very helpful to society, so I just got onboard. James: It’s interesting to work in Microsoft or Groupon, but it is much more exciting to build

Why did you decide to give up the opportunities in America and start your own business in China? Eric: I had my “eureka!” moment when I saw the crazy 100km tailback that blocked the highway from Inner Mongolia to Beijing for six whole days. I thought there had to be a market-based solution to solve the problem sustainably. In Beijing I realized the taxi issue was a major challenge, so I decided to develop a smart phone application to connect people in the same location looking for a cab to the same destination. Jeff: While I was working for Apple in India, I was also co-founder of a non-profit project, where we had three people working in 40 villages, helping people who did not have access to hospitals. This made me realize that I want to be involved with technology that can have a larger social impact. We all could get good jobs in America, but we want to do something that has meaning.

Then we got some people from Renmin University, and they wanted asking their friends to join. Our corporate culture is to respect everyone, so people love to hang out here. How do you define yourselves as entrepreneurs? Eric: A social entrepreneur’s main drive is not just about profit, but to help build a better society. We started this carpooling business, to connect the internet with transport, which I believe could change the history of transportation in China. Also it will help improve the air and traffic quality. Jeff: It’s about taking a really big problem and taking step-by-step solutions to solve it and change the life of many people. A lot of people don’t want to tackle problems, they just want to see what other people are doing to see if it is realistic.
How do you operate Wodache? Eric: We started our business with 100 companies in Beijing. James used to work in Groupon, so we decided to use them as our first trialists. Luckily, we got really positive feedback. Most companies were excited when they heard about our ideas, so they were willing to join us. Right now we have 500 users. Jeff: To pick the most popular routes, we built a user-register system, so that we could know where users live and work. Then we match people by location. Getting financing for your startup or existing business is not easy. Borrowing from friends and family has severe limitations and drawbacks (what was Polonius’ advice in Hamlet?), while borrowing from banks is often difficult, especially for foreigners in China. That’s where angel investors - independently wealthy individuals looking to bankroll businesses in exchange for convertible debt or ownership equity - come in. These tycoons are perfect for someone looking for more money than their social network can offer, and less money than the typical venture capital fund. China, with its high economic growth and low capital costs, is a superb place to access these investors, and Beijing is at the centre of all the Middle Kingdom can offer. Here are a few power tips to help you make that first pitch a winner. Time Skip the lengthy personal history and get down to the details. Keep a presentation around

20 minutes: enough time to get your ideas across and not enough to send your potential investor to sleep. If the investor wants to know more, they will ask. Focused Don’t get lost explaining the technical or scientific details of your product. Remember, angel investors essentially want to know how you are going to make money together and in what time frame you expect to be turning a profit. Stick to your marketing strategy and financial statements. If you’re a tech-head, get someone who knows how to talk business. Simple Forget the complicated PowerPoint. Use no more than 10 slides highlighting the main points of your pitch. You are not a slick salesman trying to pawn off a used car so don’t lace your presentation with fancy or confusing jargon (angel investors can spot a huckster a mile off ), but instead use concise language to passion-
ately and enthusiastically describe your concept. Clear communication is key. Viability Does your idea solve a problem or meet a need? Is there a large enough market and customer base? How does your business make money? Do you have the right people on your team? Who are your competitors? Do you have a working prototype? Good. Bring it. How much money have you made? How do you advertise? Be prepared for all of these questions and make sure all of them are addressed. Be specific in the amount of funding you are looking for so be detailed regarding your cash-burn rate. Vagueness in these essential questions will immediately indicate that you do not have a clear grasp of the business, regardless of how good your idea may be. Exit Strategy Angel investors do not make money until they can sell their stake in your company. Demonstrating how your company is a desirable acquisition target of a larger company is a great exit strategy as it is easier and quicker than an exit by doing an IPO. Providing an exit strategy shows that you have a plan and can see things from their perspective. Get Online More and more angel investor networking websites are popping up these days. Do some homework first to make sure you are targeting the right angel investor, wherever you are located and at whatever business stage

Angel investors are investing their own money and won’t part with it on a whim or without knowing all the details. The typical angel investor is well educated and highly experienced, and will look over your business plan with fierce, eagle-eyed analysis. Additionally, each investor is unique and thus will have unique expectations and criteria, though they’ll probably want to sit on the board or have board representation. Remember, they are primarily concerned with protecting their investment. Pitching your business idea to investors can be nerve-wracking but with practice you can nail that first crucial pitch meeting to ensure you are back for a second round of discussions. These tips should help you polish your pitch and seal the deal. Also, most angel investors have a good network of other investors who might be better suited to help finance your startup so make sure that first impression you leave is a good one. Good luck!

Chris Boehner’s resume reveals a diverse mix: he attended a sailing college in his home state of South Carolina, and in his six years in China, the 27-year-old has worked in marketing and management in everything from bands to transportation. He brought all this together to start Vericant, a company offering video interviews for prospective Chinese students applying to boarding schools in America. A self-professed “productivity nerd”, he shares the importance of competition and finding the right team. What attracted you to Beijing initially? I moved to China in 2006. The reason that I moved to China is that my grandfather moved to Shanghai in 1933. He left Czechoslovakia and spent about 30 years in Shanghai doing business, so China is in my blood. When I was in sailing college (the College of Charleston, South Carolina), China was about one of the 10 countries that we went to and I just fell in love with this place. I thought, “maybe I should learn Mandarin and come back”. Right after graduation, I came over to China.

I saw this situation and said, people think the Chinese are always cheating on things, but then the Chinese are saying that the US does not understand their culture. That’s how we came about. You just have to be open and flexible and rely on your guts; and, I think this translates to starting your own company. Most of it is unknown. For the past year and a half we have been working really hard on a project, but we have no idea if we will be successful. We get more and more confident as we move forward, but it is mostly jumping in head first and building trust between you and your colleagues.

How easy or difficult was it getting the business started in China? It was very difficult. It takes about six or seven months to do the paperwork to form a wholly foreign-owned enterprise. My advice to anyone looking to start a business here is to get a good agent to register the company. It probably would have taken double or triple that time had we tried to do it ourselves. With the different bureaux and agencies, it would have been a major headache. What is the outlook for Vericant? There is already competition! But that means it is a good idea. If you don’t have competition, you should be scared, because that means it is not a good idea. If there is no one within your space in six months, you should question the business model. Competition is a good thing, because it motivates us. Where do you want Vericant to be in the future? In the end, we want every student applying for a school in the US to go through Vericant. That is our vision. Once again, we want to provide a level playing field for the students, but using information schools can trust. What advice you would offer to other budding entrepreneurs in China? The other thing would be to put a good core

Why you decide to start your business in the apparel and fashion industry? Fashion is something in my blood, which people may find hard to understand because I was born and grew up in Beijing. As a young kid, I sewed clothes and I learnt sketching and painting. After high school, I studied in a design school for two years. However, I was disillusioned because it was hard to start any fashion business in China at that time. So I dropped out and my dad sent me to study in Japan. After graduating from Saitama University in marketing, I worked at Goldman Sachs. After ten years in Japan, I started Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. After that, I worked at Granite Global Ventures and Monitor Group, but I never forgot my dream to be a well-known designer. I’d learned how to manage a company and I have a passion for fashion, so I decided to take action to start my business in 2008. I started LA MIU and Beyond Tailors, but you have to focus on one thing so that you can create higher quality

things. Two years later, I closed Beyond Tailors and went out all for LA MIU. Did you have any co-founders? How do you split responsibiity? I started the business on my own, but we do have some co-founders now. They are more business-side or designer-side, while I am a combination of both. It’s hard for businessmen and designers to compromise with each other, but I am glad that it’s all worked out so far. LA MIU originated in Tokyo and now operates in Japan and China. What differences have you seen in their fashion industries? There are definitely some things different, but good fashion is universal. We sell the same products in Tokyo and China, but we do some small changes to fit local needs. For example, Japanese, American and Chinese sizes are all different, so we have to localize the products, but we keep the same style. Also there are fewer rules in Chinese fashion

How do your promote your products? What is the demographic you are aiming for? As we are at a growth stage, we have hired famous endorsers, such as Hong Kong celebrity Chrissie Chau. Also we have a lot of models, mainly mixed Japanese and Caucasians. As well as that, we have our websites and experience stores and we keep in touch with a lot of media companies. Our target customers are women aged 18-35 who want to be sexy and happy.
How did you define yourself as an entrepreneur? I consider myself to be a visionary leader. I have international experience, I am a multilingual businessman, I’ve worked and lived in many countries and I’ve built networks all over the world. I am confident in making the right marketing strategies for my company. I am a hardworking and passionate person; even now I get up at 7am and go to bed at 1am. There is so much fun working that I just don’t want to sleep. So I always encourage young people in our company to stick to their dreams, to love what they are doing and do what they do, someday you will just make it. What are your vision, mission and values for LA MIU? For LA MIU, our vision is to create an excellent brand, which means excellence in quality, style and ethical standards. In China, most people tend to relate being rich with being bad. My faith is to do good things while being rich. We pay tax and we don’t cheat our customers. There are three major values embedded in our products: 1) Love. We are not born to work, but born to love. Love what you do and do what you love. Love is the only solution to many things. 2) Trust. There is a trust crisis in China. We believe that if you want to gain trust, you have to trust others. 3) Excellence: There is vertical excellence, which is self-excellence, continuous self-improvement, to make you
today better than someone you were yesterday; and horizontal excellence, which we aim to be always better than our competitors. Can you describe the working culture and environment? We have a relatively multi-cultural working environment. We have staff from China, Japan, America and France. China is still lagging behind in the fashion industry, so we need to import talent. This is a double-edged sword. You integrate more culture and thus you can be more creative and come up with better designs, but there are also communication problems, so right now we tend to hire more multi-lingual staff. What have been your biggest frustrations thus far? Like most start-up businesses, we faced a lot of difficulties. We might have a fancy office now, but we started from a two-bedroom apartment four years ago. At that time I didn’t even know how to make bras. I had the basic image, but I didn’t know about the supply chain. I had to convince factories to work with me and supply small quantities of clothing, maybe 300 or 500 items, while I was a nobody. But I am a very optimistic and passionate person. My philosophy of life is never give up your dream and eventually I make it. How do you differentiate LA MIU from your competitors? Right now we don’t see any direct competitors, because it seems like that our business is unique in China. First, we create a young and fashionable Japanese style, which is rare in the Chinese market. Our products are different and our prices are affordable. Second, the way we create our brand image is different. We believe that as soon as customers see the lingerie pictures, they can immediately tell it’s our brand. Our products, models, packaging, store designs and website, everything is unique.

My perfect day

My ideal day would start with Eggs Benedicte, a medium cappuccino and a nice smile from Jamaica Blue’s staff. I then get on my bicycle for a relaxing ride: a stop at Zhihua Temple to enjoy the beauty of the Ming architecture, feel the sunshine in my face cycling along Houhai Lake, seeing The China World Tower III from there, since the sky is very clear. I cycle through the hutongs, looking back over my shoulder and seeing The Egg as if it’s a huge UFO just landed, and look at the 9 Dragon Screen in Beihai Park: fantastic! Then I drink a coffee at Colibri after buying some beautifully designed purses and little bags at Shanghai Trio. Then it’s lunch at my favourite Little Yunnan or maybe go for excellent dim sum at Yan Can Cook. Before you know it, it’s time to do some more shopping: modern porcelain at Spin or 200 years old stuff well hidden at the Panjiayuan market. Afterwards I go to the Egg Gallery to see their newest exciting exibition, then a glass or two of the Sardinian house wine at LMPlus. At the end of the day I will finally buy that beautiful Shanghai Tang crocodile bag with jade hanger. Now I really deserve a foot massage at Hummingbird’s by Tina. Come evening, it’s dinner at Transit (order their Sichuan Duck!) or eat a Christina roll from Haru with soft shell crab at home together with delicious seafood from the Sanyuanli Market, plus a cheese platter (Tomme!) ordered at Le Fromager de Pekin. After a cheese cake from the Village Café, I head over to Enoterra for a bottle of their Colombard house wine on their roof terrace (yes, it’s pleasantly warm outside). The day is over? No! Let’s dance! Migas, Xiu, and Chocolate, here we come!
