WELCOME TO the 8t This year Jersey Live is all about celebrating diversity, embracing new experiences and surrendering yourself to the party spirit! With so many festivals on the calendar, it’s important every year that we bring to the table a line up that not only offers familiar, famous names for those unbeatable sing along moments, but also one that presents the opportunity to enjoy new experiences and reap unexpected rewards. We’ve hopefully picked a bill that does just that with many genres and styles of music represented, from ska to afro-beat and soul to hip-hop. This may well be our most eclectic line up so far, yet we’ve stuck to our policy of picking acts that do that most important of things at a festival; that provide a perfect soundtrack to that sense of togetherness that you’ll very rarely find outside of the festival environment. Musically, there’s plenty to look forward to: headliners Madness and Plan B; the sunkissed vibes of Malian duo Amadou & Mariam; the blissed-out epic trance of legendary DJ Sasha; the new souped-up JT Recharge Arena with headline sets by The Beat and Maverick Sabre; the early afternoon Main Stage set (and later, intimate Hospitality Stage appearance) of on-his-wayto-being-massive Ed Sheeran, who we expect to deliver one of the highlight sets of the weekend. Then there’s the diverse range of acts on the SoBe Stage – Black Devil Disco Club will be a particular treat – and the impressive array of talented local acts performing on the iQ Pirate Tease Stage & Full Flow tent. With the great music happening on seven stages throughout the weekend, the ingredients are there for you all to have an absolute ball, to put it mildly! Anyone that’s been to Jersey Live before will tell you that the sense of community and friendliness is unparalleled, and as well as making new musical discoveries this weekend, we’re sure you’ll make many new friends! Whether this is your first time or your eighth time here, we welcome you and hope that you take as much enjoyment from the festival as we have taken from making it happen. Before we sign off and leave you to it, we can’t finish without saying a huge thanks to all that have helped Jersey Live become a reality this year and every year, from our local neighbours here in Trinity, to the volunteers and Honorary Police that work so hard, to our regular staff and contractors, and finally you fine people. This couldn’t happen without you. Now go and have some fun before we get teary-eyed.

WHAT’S THE FIRST SI AND HERE IS YOUR HOST... HUW STEPHENS

The Main Stage is where the big guns go at it at Jersey Live – this year the likes of Madness, Plan B and Feeder will follow in the footsteps of The Prodigy, Dizzee and Kasabian before them. We’re chuffed to bits to welcome to the stage a man always at the frontier of new music. Radio One’s Huw Stephens is responsible for setting many a musical trend and has been a champion of the likes of Jersey Live acts Ed Sheeran and Benjamin Francis Leftwich on his show. He will be here all weekend compering on the Main Stage. We caught up for a chat.

Who would you advise the Jersey Live audience not to miss on the Main Stage this weekend?

The Main Stage line up is awesome; I caught Benjamin Francis Leftwich at Glastonbury and he was great, really special. Ed Sheeran will be fantastic, and Madness is going to be a lot of fun. What’s the first sign of Madness? Suggs coming up the street. I know Wretch 32 and Katy B are going to be brill too. It’s a really nice mix of artists.

As compere, what tricks do you have up your sleeve to get the crowd worked up before a band comes on?

I like to play a good selection of tunes between bands at festivals, and it’s just nice to be able to welcome a band to the stage, give a little bit of background on the artist in case some don’t know and keeping it moving really. I really am so excited to be coming to Jersey for the first time, and to host the main stage, so I’ll be loving every minute!

What makes a great festival performance?
Everyone’s so excited at festivals, we are all here to have a good time and to enjoy some great music. I think at festivals everyone’s in a good mood and are here to enjoy the vibes, hanging out with friends and family, and the same goes for the bands playing. They’ve been in studios and in venues, but now they’re in the great outdoors, meeting their fans and making new ones! The best festival sets for me are the ones where the band is enjoying it as much as the crowd; you can tell straight off if they’re into it.

Favourite festival tipple? A nice refreshing glass of lemonade. Favourite summer song? Bob Marley – ‘Sun Is Shining’

IGN OF MADNESS? MADNESS HEADLINES THE MAIN STAGE SATURDAY AT 10.10PM

MADNESS (UK)

This year’s Saturday night Main Stage headliners need little introduction and little bigging up from us. Madness, the iconic ska-pop band that along with The Specials were the biggest spearheads of the late-70s ‘2 Tone’ movement, perform at Jersey Live Festival for the very first time and we have no doubt that they’ll be bringing with them the party vibe that surrounds them wherever they go. Formed in 1976 (originally named The Invaders), the band were signed to The Specials’ Jerry Dammers’ 2-Tone label in 1979, and went on to enjoy unprecedented mainstream success throughout the 80s, achieving fame on both sides of the Atlantic. Led by their charismatic frontman Suggs, the sevenpiece band are behind some of the best-loved hits of the past thirty years, including ‘Our House’ and ‘It Must Be Love’, and their place in the pantheon of musical greats is secure, the band having released 9 albums and enjoyed a massive 16 Top Ten singles in their time together. They have picked up award after award too, including the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song in 1983,

for ‘Our House’. In 2005 they were inducted into MOJO magazine’s Hall of Fame and last year were bestowed with the ‘Idol Award’ at the Q Magazine Awards. The NME also placed 1985 album Mad Not Mad at number 55 in their All Time 100 Albums list. In 2009 they released their first album of new material since 1999. The Liberty of Norton Folgate became their highest charting LP since 1980, peaking at number 5 in the charts and demonstrating that the band are at the height of their creative forces. Most reviewers agreed too; the BBC described it as “the most sophisticated and satisfying album of their career.” If there’s one thing Madness do well, it’s uptempo, anthemic party music, and when you hear those saxophones and trumpets kick in on Saturday night, you’d better stand back or be ready to dance. We’re delighted to have them at Jersey Live and we wouldn’t bet against theirs being one of the best sets we’ve ever seen on the Main Stage.

Essential Tracks: ‘Baggy Trousers, ‘One Step Beyond, House of Fun’, ‘Driving In My Car’

PLAN B (UK)

If you don’t know about Ben Drew aka Plan B by now, then the chances are you’ve been living on the Minquiers for the past 18 months. Fast becoming Britain’s best-loved young recording artist, he’s been picking up awards left, right and centre for his platinum-selling concept album The Defamation of Strickland Banks. Breaking away from his earlier rap roots, his impeccable soulful pop sounds at once timeless yet tempered with a grittiness that very much tells a 21st century story of inner city life. A string of chart-busting singles, sell-out tours and collaborations with such musical luminaries as Elton John, Chase & Status, Paloma Faith and Noel Gallagher have cemented his place right at the very top of the British music mountain. Earning the respect of his peers, the music media and fans alike, it seems he can do no wrong in 2011. Plan B was chalked in to play at Jersey Live last summer but due to filming commitments

(the multi-talented young man not only starred opposite Sir Michael Caine in Harry Brown but directed a feature film due for release this year), had to cancel, much to the disappointment of the organisers and the fans. But they say everything happens for a reason, and in a funny way, it’s all worked out for the best. A year on, and Plan B is an even bigger star than he was back then, having cleaned up at 2011’s prestigious Ivor Novello Awards and taken the Brit for Best Male Solo Artist. With a much anticipated follow-up album, The Ballad of Belmarsh set to be released this year, Plan B truly has the world in the palm of his hands right now. The Jersey Live team made its annual pilgrimage to Glastonbury in June; seeing this young performer on the Pyramid Stage in front of one of the biggest crowds of the weekend – 100,000 at least – felt like one of those pivotal moments that elevates an artist from excellence to greatness. At Jersey Live Festival, we’ll get to witness that in a setting infinitely more intimate.

Essential Tracks: ‘She Said’, ‘Prayin’, ‘Stay Too Long’

Plan B headlines the Main Stage on Sunday at 9.30pm

STOP. DROP. ROCK N’ MAIN STAGE

FEEDER (UK)

THE TING TINGS (UK)

Welsh rockers Feeder are, according to the Guinness Book of Records, one of most successful UK chart acts of all time, with three platinum, two gold and one silverselling album. Having released seven studio albums in total, they remain as enduring as ever, and we look forward to a set jam-packed full of anthems on the Main Stage on Sunday evening.

Representing something of a coup for the festival, their Sunday evening appearance will be their only UK festival performance this summer, and we’re excited to see what they have to offer as they unveil new tracks from the forthcoming follow-up to their MTV, Brit and Ivor Novello award-winning, multi-million-selling debut album We Started Nothing.

Once seen as Britain’s answer to the Smashing Pumpkins, the trio are now stars in their own right; during a career spanning nearly twenty years, they have performed on the world’s biggest stages, toured with the likes of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and picked up numerous awards along the way.

The duo, Katie White and Jules De Martino, broke into the British mainstream with infectious dance-infused pop-rock hits like ‘Shut Up & Let Me Go’ and ‘That’s Not My Name’, and are renowned for electrifyingly energetic stage performances. The new album features collaborations with megastars Rihanna and Calvin Harris, and will be one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of the year.

The perfect festival band, they have plenty of sing along hits like ‘Buck Rogers’ and ‘Just The Way I’m Feeling’, and are equally happy with balls-to-the-wall rocking out as they are turning the tempo down for those lighter-in-the-air moments. They’ve been here, there and everywhere. Now it’s Jersey’s turn.

As well as the new soon-to-be-hits, expect all the old favourites during their Jersey Live set. Savour the moment people, and make sure you bring your dancing shoes.

’ ROLL

CAGE THE ELEPHANT (USA) THE STREETS (UK)

THE RAPTURE (USA)

These Kentucky-fried blues rockers were last seen here on the Main Stage in 2008, when they tore through an adrenaline-fuelled set early on in their career. They return bigger, bolder and more grown-up, having released their second LP Thank You Happy Birthday earlier this year, which peaked at number 2 in both the UK and US album charts. Their new-found dark streak has made them stars on both sides of the Atlantic; a huge US tour supporting Foo Fighters due this autumn is just one reward. With new material nodding to grunge and punk to add to the old explosive rock n’ roll numbers, you can expect this show to get sweaty.

Mike Skinner aka The Streets this year embarked on his Retirement Tour, so it’s with open arms but a heavy heart that we welcome him and his band for what may be one of their last ever performances.

The Rapture are back! The New York disco-rock outfit, an influence on a scene that included the likes of Bloc Party and Klaxons and the men behind one of the most infectiously dancefloor-filling hits of the last decade, ‘House Of Jealous Lovers’, return this year with a new album produced by DFA Records’ legend James Murphy. If there were awards for services to bridging the gap between rock and dance music, The Rapture would have them coming out of their ears. Funk-punk doesn’t get much slicker than this folks.

One of the earliest proponents of garage to bring the genre to mainstream attention, The Streets have influenced the likes of Dizzee Rascal and the current crop of young Britrap artists such as Example and Professor Green. With a wicked wit and an abundance of modern pop anthems like ‘Fit But You Know It’, they’ve earned their place in the music pantheon. Let’s make the most of the closing chapters of their story.

MUSIC IS AN OUTBUR MAIN STAGE

AMADOU & MARIAM (MALI) WRETCH 32 (UK)

SANTIGOLD (USA)

And now for something different: Malian married couple Amadou & Mariam are regarded as one of the world’s biggest ‘world music’ acts, up there with likes of Baba Maal and Femi Kuti. Having written the official anthem of the 2006 World Cup in Germany, performed with Blur at their historic Hyde Park reunion shows, and supported U2 on the South African leg of their infamous ‘360’ tour, the duo have deservedly captured the imagination of a huge European fanbase, and their fusion of traditional Malian music with rock, Syrian violins, Cuban trumpets and Egyptian Ney makes them a compelling addition to an already diverse Jersey Live line up. Their summery sounds are sure to win them a few more fans this weekend.

Part of the latest crop of Britrap stars to emerge in recent times, Wretch 32’s rise to the top has been a rapid one. After being nominated in the BBC’s influential ‘Sound of 2011’ poll, his first two singles (‘Traktor’ and ‘Unorthodox’ featuring Example) hit the top 5, and after being snapped up by the Ministry of Sound label, the young grime/hip-hop MC looks set to conquer all before him.

All the way from the US and A comes Santi White, aka Santigold. The genre-defying singer-songwriter mixes dub, electronica and rock n’ roll for a potent pop cocktail, and will grace the festival on Sunday at Jersey Live. Her collaborative efforts have involved the likes of NERD, Kanye West, Julian Casblancas and Mark Ronson, and she was also hired in by Christina Aguilera to write two songs for her album Bionic. Acclaimed by the world’s music press and fans alike, Santigold returns this year with a follow-up to her debut album, and her uniquely kaleidoscopic pop sensibility promises to be a hit on the Main Stage.

RST OF THE SOUL

KATY B (UK)

BENJAMIN FRANCIS LEFTWICH (UK)

THE BLOODY BATTLE (JSY)

If dubstep fans ever had any doubts that the genre could cross over to the mainstream, BRIT school graduate Katy B might just be the living, breathing proof that it very much can and has. Since first emerging on the scene with her vocal contribution to dubstep supergroup Magnetic Man’s ‘Perfect Stranger’ last year, she has shot to fame domestically, with her Benga-produced debut single ‘Katy’s On A Mission’ reaching number 5 in the UK single charts, and her first album album debuting at number 2 in the UK charts. A tour with Tinie Tempah and collaborations with urban queen Ms Dynamite are just highlights of a huge year for the young songstress. Luscious vocals with dirty beats? Sounds like a winning combination to us.

Still only 21 years young, this young singer-songwriter has been lauded by the likes of Radio One’s Huw Stephens and Zane Lowe, and his dreamy acoustic folk has drawn comparisons with such esteemed names as Elliott Smith and Nick Drake. A fixture on many a festival line up this summer, his fan base continues to grow, and after his Main Stage set on Saturday afternoon, we’re confident he’ll have converted a good many more.

Out of the ashes of former Jersey Live stars The Author and Black Stats rises The Bloody Battle. Winners of the local Battle of the Bands, they will open proceedings on the Main Stage on Sunday, and their dark, heavy, grunge-tinted rock n’ roll will certainly blow away the early afternoon cobwebs.

MAKE SOME NOISE MAIN STAGE

ED SHEERAN (UK)

THE BEAT (UK)

THE LITTLE BIG BAND (JSY)

CABADZI (FR)

Almost certainly the biggest breakout star of 2011, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is enjoying the fruits of a lot of good old fashioned hard work; playing over 600 gigs in 3 years, he has built up a massive following, his collaboration with grime artists Wiley and Devlin reaching number 2 in the i-Tunes charts earlier this year despite being an independent release – an almost unprecedented achievement. Nestled neatly between Britrap and new-folk, he is, quite simply, going to be HUGE, with a capital ‘Huge.’ Get here early folks.

One of the most important bands of the 70s ‘2 Tone’ movement, The Beat truly deserve their place in British rock history. Having toured the world with The Clash, REM and David Bowie, and been responsible for hits like ‘Tears of a Clown’ and ‘Mirror In the Bathroom’, The Beat have more than paid their dues to music and their upbeat summery ska stylings are a key part of the Jersey Live master plan to get the party started early on Sunday afternoon!

Opening Jersey Live Fesival 2011 are local boys The Little Big Band. After performing standout sets on the Tease Stage here for the past two years, the blues-swing-jazz band earned their promotion to the big stage by winning this year’s Battle of the Bands. With a full brass section and a heavy emphasis on fun, they’re the perfect band to kick off another year of great music at Jersey Live.

Returning to the festival after performing on the SoBe stage last year, French outfit Cabadzi will be attempting to twist your melons with their psychedelic hip-hop, jazz and classical infused psych-pop. All underpinned by some impressive beatboxing, their weird and wonderful sounds are unlike any other you’ll hear this weekend.

IF YOU CAN WALK YOU GET THE LOWE-DOWN...

Radio One presenter Zane Lowe is indisputably one of the most influential voices in British music, at the forefront of new music always. Closely associated with cutting-edge indie music, he’s also one of the world’s most respected DJs, his live shows a whirlwind of breaks, hip-hop, d&b, electro and rock. He returns to Jersey Live after DJing here back in 2006. He phoned us for a chinwag…

This will be your second time here - what are your memories of last time? It was raining, I was doing the Main Stage slot after Snow Patrol, and I was pretty nervous as I hadn’t done that many Main Stage shows at that point and I was concerned that people might start to leave after Snow Patrol. But everyone stuck around and it was great! I remember the location was great too, with the stage set on this sloping ground. It was also memorable as it was one of the first trips away with my wife and boy – we have two now – and we had a nice, chilled time the night before walking on the beach. Which bands are you most excited about seeing at Jersey Live? Well Ed Sheeran on the Main Stage for sure. I don’t think I’ve experienced this level of excitement from the public for an artist ahead of their first album since Arctic Monkeys. He’s been smart and done all the right things, getting on the road and sharing a lot of music for free. So he’s got his fanbase well and

truly in place, and wherever he plays at festivals this summer it’s a roadblock, so many people want to see him. He sits nicely inbetween artists like Example and Mumford & Sons. If you could relive any festival performance you’ve witnessed, what would it be?
Probably the first Glasto me and my wife went to together, in 2002. It was that magical mid-afternoon slot on the Other Stage and it was Gomez of all people, and it was just perfect. What can we expect from your set? I have maybe five different festival variations but I cover a lot of ground and make it very eclectic. I’ll change it around though depending on the crowd or my own mood; I could start with something like The Chemicals or with a drum & bass track, but where it goes from there depends on the situation. I play a lot of remixes too, I rarely play original versions. So there’s a few surprises in there.

U CAN DANCE DANCE STAGE

SASHA (UK)

ANNIE MAC (EIRE)

As if Mr Oizo’s headline Dance Stage set wasn’t enough, Sunday night brings another huge name to the festival in the shape of legendary Grammy-nominated DJ Sasha. One of the biggest superstar DJs of the 90s, he helped transformed the landscape of modern dance music and the Sasha & Digweed partnership is one of the most successful DJ collaborations in history. A key figure in the evolution of trance and house music in the 90s, Sasha has produced remixes for Madonna, toured the world many times over, and his contribution to dance music elevated the genre to its dizziest heights, leading to the creation of superclubs like Cream and Gatecrasher. He’s been voted in the Top 10 DJs in the World by DJ Mag readers every year since 1997. We don’t mean to gush, but come on, he’s pretty flipping big. His set will be too, you can bet your Jersey Live ticket on that.

One member of the BBC Radio DJ love-in at Jersey Live this year (her colleagues Zane, Huw and Craig Charles are all here too), Miss Annie MacManus is well-acquainted with the Jersey danceheads, having played to two sell-out crowds here in the past 18 months. Synonymous with cutting edge electronic music, she is one of the most popular broadcasters in Britain, her Friday night Radio 1 slot (formerly occcupied by Pete Tong) attracts millions of listeners on the lookout for the next big thing in dance music. She has become just as well-renowned for her DJ sets in recent years, her tours selling out all over the country and festival appearances a regular fixture in Annie’s schedule. She knows how to please a festival crowd too, her sets blasting through the genres, from d&b and dubstep to fidget house and breaks; by the time Zane hits the decks, the roof might be off the Dance Stage already.

DANNY BYRD & DYNAMITE MC. (UK)

TODDLA T & MC SEROCEE (UK)

Described by the UK music press variously as having beats “packed with more beef than an Argentinian steakhouse” and as “one of electronic music’s most exciting producers”, James Boyle aka Breakage is certainly one of dance music’s rising stars, with his blend of dubstep, jungle and d&b winning him fans across the world. Collaborations with the likes of Roots Manuva, Skream and the support of Zane Lowe and Laurent Garnier have helped confirm his rightful place in the top tier.

One of the first signings to the iconic Hospital Records way back in 2000, Danny Byrd’s career took off with a stratospheric trajectory in 2008 when his longawaited debut LP landed. Getting huge radio and DJ support for his hip-hop, soul and r&b-flavoured d&b, he followed up the album release with the massive success that was ‘Sweet Harmony’, hitting the top spot in the UK dance singles chart. He’s had the respect of those in the know for years and now he’s knocking on stardom’s door.

From the town that gave birth to The Arctic Monkeys and Pulp, comes Tom Bell, aka Toddla T. Signed to the uber-cool Ninja Tune label, Toddla T’s mix of hip-hop, electro and house has made him one of the most exciting young producers in the country. A debut LP featuring collaborations with Tinchy Stryder, Herve and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard was met with glowing reviews and as one of Radio One’s ‘In New Djs We Trust’ residents, his reputation is just soaring and soaring.

Signed to Basement Freaks’ Bombastic Jam Records, local duo Fuzzbox have been Jersey Live regulars over the year and their mix of hip-hop and funky breaks guarantees them a loyal following wherever they play. Having performed in huge venues like Fabric as well as numerous festivals, they’re pros when it comes to working a crowd.

Alex Metric is no stranger to acclaim, having announced himself on the scene when he was voted Best Breakthrough Producer in the 2008 Breakspoll Awards.. This year has been good to Alex, his collaboration with Ian Brown, the single ‘Open Your Eyes’ meeting rave reviews, and he is an ever-present fixture on this summer’s festival scene. With a style heavy on breaks, techno and rock, he’s one of the most-respected young producer-DJs in the business, so miss out at your own risk.

Brighton-based turntablist and Beardyman cohort JFB is the most exciting young British scratch DJ on the scene at the moment, and the Dance Arena is in for a partysized kick up the rear when his set commences at Jersey Live. Twice UK DMC champion – in 2007 and reigning supreme as the 2011 winner – JFB’s game-changing skills and use of state-of-the-art technology combine with an instinctive bombdropping sense and a taste for anything from hip-hop to breakbeat to dubstep, making him one heck of a DJ.

Local producer/DJ collective Schema are one of the most exciting acts to have emerged from these shores in recent years, their dubstep n’ breaks concoction winning them rave reviews from the likes of IDJ Magazine back in 2010. Signed to Jay Cunning’s Sub Slayers label and Cut La Roc’s Rocstar Agency, they’re well connected and have been busy boys lately, making a foray into the world of jungle with their latest ‘Revival’ EP. Don’t expect a quiet one, folks.

DJs Fire, Snare and Zerozero are Jersey’s own Terminal State. As well as spinning d&b and jungle for almost twenty years, they have been been a fundamental force in cultivating the island’s thriving electronic scene, hosting the likes of Goldie, Andy C and Pendulum at their own infamous clubnights. Recently they even launched theit own Vanguard label and clubnight, with a debut release due to drop before 2011 is out. If anyone’s paid their dues, it’s these chaps.

IT’S MR OIZO TO YOU MR OIZO (FR) Q&A

French techno producer Quentin Dupieux aka Mr Oizo is inarguably one of the most respected and influential dance artists of the modern age. Along with the likes of Daft Punk, his electronic experimentations had a big hand in helping to create the modern electro sound associated with the likes of Justice, Boys Noize and Sebastian. In 1999, the track ‘Flat Beat’ made stars out of Mr Oizo and the cuddly yellow puppet named Flat Eric, with the Flat Beat EP going on to sell over 3 million copies. He’s enigmatic, electric and just a little eccentric, and we heard from him ahead of his show.

Will this be your first visit to Jersey? Will you get a chance to explore the island? First time in Jersey, yes! I’ll try to visit the island but I’m not a good tourist. I usually stay in the hotel room and watch stupid movies on Pay TV. What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you at a festival? I don’t know. Classic festival; people dancing naked on stage, people throwing shoes on stage, people trying to kill me on stage. Nothing really crazy. Which experience do you enjoy more, club or festival sets?
I enjoy both but there’s something really exciting with festivals. Strangely, I feel more connected to the audience when I play on a big stage. In a club, you’re just the DJ – on a big stage, if you cut the music suddenly, it means something. In a club people think you did something wrong.

For anyone that hasn’t seen you live before, what can they expect from your Jersey Live appearance? Good music, fun, champagne, beard, cigarettes. ‘Flat Beat’ is obviously your best known track – do you still get a thrill playing it live?
Sometimes I play it, it’s still a good tune. But I get better reactions with my new stuff. People must be bored by this old tune too. You directed a film which premiered at Cannes – tell us more about it? The movie is called ‘Rubber.’ It’s a comedy about a psychokinetic tyre. It’s been released in many countries. I’m really proud of it, and you can find it now on DVD or iTunes – I did the soundtrack with Gaspard from the band Justice. I just finished the new one, called ‘Wrong.’ We shot it in LA. This one will be released in 2012. Finally, complete this sentence: ‘Everyone at Jersey Live should go and see Mr Oizo because… He likes coconuts.

You heard it here first. Mr Oizo headlines the Dance Stage on Sunday night.

JAMIE WOON (UK)

SUMMER CAMP (UK) KING CHARLES (UK) FOUND (UK)

Headlining the SoBe Stage on Saturday night, BRIT School graduate Jamie Woon has been quietly going about the business of earning the respect of peers, press and fans alike over the past 12 months. Categorised by many as part of the ‘post-dubstep’ movement, his ambient blend of soul, r&b and electronics makes him a mouth-watering addition to the Jersey Live bill.

London duo Summer Camp are Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley, who you may know as the affable folktronica artist of high regard signed to Transgressive Records. Summer Camp brilliantly skim the lines between twee indie-pop, melodic surf rock and fuzzy lo-fi doo-wop, with lyrics about boys, girls, fun and the sun. If this doesn’t do it for you, you may actually have no soul. No offence.

Since winning the prestigious International Songwriting Competition in 2010 (judged by a panel including Tom Waits, Kings of Leon and Timbaland), psychedelic sensation King Charles has gone from strength-to-strength, touring with the likes of Mumford & Sons and receiving rave reviews for his quintessentially English, off-the-wall folk stylings. Definitely one to watch.

We’re very excited at the prospect of seeing this inventive young Scottish group line up on the SoBe Stage. The result of creative tinkerings of an experimental arts collective, their mix of melodic rock and glitchy electronica has won them a legion of highly-regarded fans including Steve Lamacq and Main Stage compere Huw Stephens.

BLACK DEVIL DISCO CLUB (FR)

TRIBES (UK)

DRY THE RIVER (UK) THE LOVELY EGGS (UK)

French producer Bernard Fevre enjoys a cult status amongst fans of offbeat electronic music. When Aphex Twin reissued BDDC’s long-lost self-titled masterpiece in 2004, so modern was its sound that many were convinced it was in fact a hoax, that it had been produced by Aphex Twin himself.. He this year returned with a new album featuring guests including Nancy Sinatra, Afrika Bambaata and The Horrors’ Faris Badwan. His crisp disco beats, vintage synths and melodic electronics make him one to look out for at Jersey Live.

Tribes bring a hefty slab of grunge-fuelled rock to the SoBe Stage, and with the seal of approval of none other than Pixies frontman Black Francis, who hand-picked Tribes to support them in their legendary UK reunion shows. Their fledgling career has kicked off with a bang, their debut single being selected as Zane Lowe’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’, and they have the tunes, noise and sheer presence to make it very big indeed.

Five-piece DTR deal in old-fashioned countrytinged folk of the very highest calibre; their combination of acoustic guitar, violin and mournfully beautiful vocal harmonies have made them a big hit in the past year, supporting the likes of Plan B and signing with the influential Transgressive Records. Catch them if you can.

Married couple Holly Ross and David Blackwell are The Lovely Eggs. Dealing in twee, off-kilter indie-rock, the Lancaster duo couldn’t be more different to the other offerings on the SoBe Stage. With a kooky humour and a heavy emphasis on not taking themsleves too seriously, only the most stony-faced of listeners could resist their oddball pop.

This local indie outfit have built up a loyal and passionate following over the past year, their melodic sensibility, thoughtful lyrics and super-confident frontman Craig Smith combining to win over the judges at this year’s JL Battle of the Bands, earning them a slot on the Main Stage.

A runner up in the annual Jersey Live Battle of the Bands, HYF! impressed the judges enough to land a place on the festival bill, and bring with them a melodic punk/metal assault on the senses, with quick riffage, gang vocals and not a small amount of blood, sweat – and maybe even tears.

This stage was introduced to the festival last year and was a huge success, offering a chilled-out alternative to the hustle and bustle of the main arena. It returns this year courtesy of JT, with some very special exclusive performances by UK and local acts. Once inside, you’ll find a relaxing bar and chill out zone, as well as headline sets from…

MAVERICK SABRE (UK)

THE BEAT (UK)

Born in Hackney, London, Maverick Sabre has been one of this year’s success stories. Having worked with Wretch 32 and Chase & Status, his blend of folk with hip-hop beats, soulful vocal style somewhere between rapping and singing, has seen him compared somewhat inevitably with Plan B, but he’s very much a talent of his own style. See him up close and personal headlining on Saturday night.

As well as performing on the Main Stage on Sunday afternoon, the iconic ska outfit will be headlining the JT Recharge Arena on Sunday evening.

As well as JT’s spacious dome tent itself, you’ll find The Park in this area, where you can chill out at with friends at the picnic benches and bean bags, or immerse yourself in a game of Giant Jenga or Connect 4. If you’re feeling brave, get involved in one of the ongoing Guitar Hero competitions to win prizes like drinks vouchers, t-shirts and even i-pods. We definitely advise making time to pay this spot a visit over the weekend

wanna rock? HOSPITALITY STAGE

image Copyright Peter Trenchard Photography The Hospitality Stage has seen some memorable, intimate performances since being introduced to the festival back in 2009, from the likes of Frank Turner, Darwin Deez and a particularly raucous funk n’ soul DJ set by BBC6 Music’s Craig Charles. Craig, who you’ll also know from Coronation St and Red Dwarf, returns this year to host the stage and to perform another headline DJ set, with funk, soul and old school r&b numbers on the menu. Main Stage compere Huw Stephens will also be performing a DJ set here, in which you can expect only the finest cutting-edge indie, with a few oldies chucked in for good measure. As well as giving you the chance to mingle with the stars at the Hospitality bar and barbeque, there’s the small matter of the great live music on offer. Hospitality ticket holders will get the opportunity to see some of this year’s Jersey Live acts up in a more intimate setting, including Benjamin Francis Leftwich, The Lovely Eggs, Found, King Charles and the high-flyng Ed Sheeran. For an artist that seems so destined to be a megastar, this could be a golden and soon-to-be increasinlgy rare opportunity to see the young indie-folk artist perform on such a smal stage. If you have a Hospitality ticket, you may well have the ‘I was there’ bragging rights in years to come. In the spacious and relaxing dome tent of the Hospitality area, there will also be a varied array of local acts performing, including talented beardy man Lloyd Yates, funk-hop extraordinaires Hip Hoperation, folkie folks The Flower Singer and Rick Jones, as well as Main Stage openers The Little Big Band, with more local and visiting special guests to be revealed on the day.

LA FEMME (FR)

Performing an exclusive set on the Hospitality Stage are French five-piece La Femme. For our money, the finest Gallic puveyors of lo-fi surf, rockabilly and rock n’ roll, and their shows are as viscerally engaging as they are sonically thrilling. Recent gigs in Paris caused ecstatic riots (friendly ones) and they are gearing up for a North American tour. Clémence, Sasha, Marlon, Sam and Noé sing in French, wear stripy tops and bérets on stage, and may even have croissants on their rider. We think you’ll love them so much you’ll probably follow them back to France.

Next year we aim to expa JERSEY LIVE IN-DEPTH: INTERVIEW WITH THE WARRENS

In 2004, local events promoters Warren Holt and Warren Le Sueur decided to put their heads together to try and come up with a live music event that would be bigger than anything the Channel Islands had seen before. Seven years on, and it’s clear that with Jersey Live, they succeeded in that mission. However, it hasn’t always been easy or straightforward and the festival still presents challenges even now. Here, they reflect on a job well done, so far…

When you first had the idea for Jersey Live, did you ever anticipate it becoming so big and still going in 2011? WLS: Initally, the dream was there, but the reality did not really become apparent until 2004 when the feedback from our first year was so positive. What are the biggest things that you’ve learned since the first event? WH: The first event was practcally held together with sticky tape! We now have a refined, safe and secure model, this has taken experience which we have gained over the years and we always continue

expand to three days to learn and keep up to date with all the latest health & safety measures, fire regulations, environmental guidelines and policing policies. Ultimately our model is to provide a site where people can let loose and party in a safe and secure environment. How do you keep the event feeling fresh and new each year? What’s new this time around?
WH: We have white-knuckle fairground rides, there is a complete reorientation of the site. It’s kind of like moving your furniture around at home. We will have a few different structures, furnishings and signage, etc. I visit many festivals, pick up ideas and hopefully implement them to keep the festival evolving in an organic fashion. How do you pick acts for the festival, especially headliners, and do you ever clash with your co-organiser over tastes? WLS: We have a broad understanding of each other’s musical tastes and if one puts forward an act for consideration, we both listen and have to agree 100% before an act will be invited to play. After JL2010 finished, when did work start in earnest for 2011? WH: It is now a year round event, but work starts in earnest around March. What other festival do you take most inspiration from? WLS: I really like the French music festivals as they have a great range of artists playing there, and the crowds are generally laid back there too, offering a different kind of atmosphere. However, Glastonbury has to be the best festival for overall atmosphere and line up billing! It is really something special that should be experienced by anybody interested in festivals that has never been. If you were magically given an unlimited budget, who would be your fantasy pair of headliners? WH: Arcade Fire & Neil Young. If you could relive one festival performance from over the years at Jersey Live, which would it be?

WH: Paul Weller last year. WLS: There have been so many big performances over the last seven years, like Snow Patrol,

Kasabian, Dizzee Rascal, but the big one for me was the Prodigy in 2008. It was so surreal to be watching such a massive act play to our intimate crowd in a small field in Jersey on a Sunday. These experiences are very difficult to replicate! Was it important at the beginning to get the local community, businesses and States on side? How have you won people over? WLS: I think providing such a great event that so many people look forward to each year has won many hearts within the local community. We have a stack of local businesses with whom we work, from suppliers to sponsors, and the relationships are very fruitful. There’s a handful of local politicians that believe in Jersey Live as a whole, which is a shame as if it was embraced more generally by the States, Jersey Live festival could become a huge draw for many more visitors off island which would in turn give us the chance to see real growth, contribute more to the local economy and attract even bigger acts – who command even larger fees – to come and play here! What’s the biggest challenge that faced you this year? WH: Camping is always the biggest challenge and once again we are still governed by a minority with this matter. Obviously Jersey Live is a ‘boutique’ festival at present. Do you think it will be long before it can challenge the big UK festivals? WLS: If Jersey Live was supported more generally by the States and helped us gain a camping facility, it really could become a world class destination festival, but currently, it is deemed expensive for many to travel & stay here for the duration of the festival. What do you hope Jersey Live will be in five years time? What are your mid-to-long term plans to make changes or expland? WH: We have reached a good size on the current site. Next year we aim to expand to 3 days, hopefully taking our numbers from 20,000 to 25,000 over the festival period.

from every acorn. JERSEY LIVE IN-DEPTH: ‘BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS’

In its eight year history, Jersey Live has had an impressive record for picking up on acts in the fledgling stages of their careers before seeing them go on to reach dizzy heights. Here, we take a look at some of the bands that passed through the festival before hitting the big time.

RAZORLIGHT

KASABIAN

BOYS NOIZE

Booked well before their debut album Up All Night had even been released, Razorlight turned out at the very first Jersey Live Festival with their star on the rise. Said album reached number 3 in the UK charts. A year later they were perfoming at Live 8 in front of a wordlwide TV audience of billions, went on to headline Reading Festival, reached the top spot in the UK album charts with their followup LP, gigged with Queen and The Rolling Stones, and generally got massive for a while. To think, they didn’t even headline Jersey Live.

The swaggering rock behemoth that is Kasabian played their first headline festival slot at Jersey Live 2005, describing the festival as ‘surreal, sexy and super f***ing cool!” and exclaiming, “We wanna come back!” And come back they did, headlining the festival again in 2007, this time as true rock royalty. They have since gone on to headline Isle of Wight and V Festival, receive numerous awards and critical acclaim for their next three LPs. Up there with Muse, Radiohead and Coldplay as one of the UK’s biggest bands.

German producer Alex Ridha aka Boys Noize released his debut album in the same month as appearing at JL back in 2007, and has since gone on to be regarded as one of the most exciting and pioneering electro acts in the game. Collaborations with Black Eyed Peas and Kelis, and remixes for Snoop Dogg and Chemiical Brothers have confirmed him as one of the world’s most sought after electronic producers, as well as one of the very best DJs around.

FOALS

FRANK TURNER

TINIE TEMPAH

With the excitement of the announcement that the big Sunday night headliner would be dance titans The Prodigy, the fact that there were some very promising up-and-comers on the bill perhaps was overlooked by some at the time. One of those bands was Foals. Their second album in 2010 was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and the band nominated in no less than 5 categories at the NME Awards. They’re now festival headline material in their own right.

The English cult hero had been around already for a while when he was booked for the Main Stage, having been a member of hardcore band Million Dead and released a debut solo album. But it was around this time that his career started to really take off, his second LP meeting widespread acclaim and the accompanying promotional tour selling out, culminating in a huge concert at Shepherds Bush Empire. Stadium support slots with Green Day, two NME Awards nominations and a career best chart position of number 12 for his third album followed.

Within days of announcing the booking of British rapper Tinie Tempah, his debut single rocketed to number one, confirming him as a star in the making. In the ensuing months, he performed alongside Snoop Dogg on Glasto’s Pyramid Stage, supported 50 Cent at Wembley and scored another number one single. After being promoted to Jersey Live’s Main Stage and playing one of the standout sets of the weekend, his debut album charted at number one and picked up every award going (including his first Brit Award). He recently sold out his own headline shows at Wembley.

ED SHEERAN, MAVERICK SABRE, BENJAMIN FRANCIS LEFTWICH, TODDLA T, JAMIE WOON (Various Stages, 2011) These are just a few of the rising stars of this year’s festival, but not the only ones. Which ones will graduate to the big time? Maybe all of them. Savour the moment while you can folks.

The Prodigy stole o JERSEY LIVE IN-DEPTH: Q&A WITH FESTIVAL TEAM MEMBERS

Beth Gallichan, iQ Pirate Tease Stage Co-Ordinator Justin De Gruchy, Site Manager How did you first get involved with Jersey Live? I just phoned up and volunteered to help out. What does your role entail? I was site manager which basically means making sure the site is built and safe by show time. This year I have moved on and am more involved in the site planning than the building. What’s the best thing about working at the festival?
My production parking pass and queue jumping the Dance Arena. What’s been the biggest nightmare you’ve had to sort out at Jersey Live? Losing my wife’s car keys in 2009 and her car being stuck at the RJA Showground for a month as we had no spares. Have you had to deal with any divas backstage? Yes, and surprisingly they are never the actual artists. What’s been your favourite Jersey Live memory from over the years? Having to pretend to be a mini bus driver to pick up The Levellers as we were short on drivers . Ps I do hold a mini bus licence. Who would be your own personal dream Jersey Live headliner, dead or alive? No, I hate Dead Or Alive and Pete Burns. I’d prefer JLS.

How did you first get involved with Jersey Live? It all started with a brainwave for an alternative area after many visits to Lost Vagueness at Glastonbury. I approached the Warrens with the possibility of running the area with all profits benefitting charity and it has grown each year. What does your role entail? I plan and co-ordinate the Tease area which includes design, sponsorship, overseeing the Tease stage and all the fundraising and games. What’s the best thing about working at the festival?
You become part of the festival instead of a spectator, we all work very hard but play hard to make up for it, plus we get a buzz knowing we’re raising money for Headway. Have you had to deal with any divas backstage? The Prodigy did steal our picket fence for their backstage one year. What’s been your favourite Jersey Live memory from over the years? The best memories are those shared with friends, it was euphoric watching Groove Armada and then topped off by sleeping in the tipi with one sleeping bag between 7 of us. Who would be your own personal dream Jersey Live headliner, dead or alive? Radiohead, I saw them at Glastonbury but they are legendary as musicians and the ultimate festival act.

our picket fence!

Alice Evans, Administrative Assistant

Tim Bartlett, Festival Manager

How did you first get involved with Jersey Live? I volunteered at the festival in 2010, and I was placed backstage of the Les Inrocks Stage (this year’s SoBe Stage) because I spoke French. I then stayed in touch with the directors which led me to be employed part-time since March.

How did you first get involved with Jersey Live? It was back in 2005. I already knew both [Jersey Live orgsnisers] Warrens and got involved whilst home for the summer from university. The rest is history.

What does your role entail? I’m promoting Jersey Live in France, namely Brittany and Normandy, and I also organise travel and accommodation for the Jersey Live artists and crew. I also have other administrative duties when they come up. What’s the best thing about working at the festival?
The diversity of the job, learning so much from the team every day, pushing myself beyond my boundaries, and listening to very cool music! What’s been your favourite Jersey Live memory from over the years? I can only speak for last year, but it was the lovely weather and the incomparable atmosphere that you could feel in the air as you walked around. Everyone just seemed so happy to be there, and they were having such a good time. Who would be your own personal dream Jersey Live headliner, dead or alive? That’s a difficult one, can I just give my perfect lineup? I’d say Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Libertines, Snoop Dogg, Noir Désir, The Doors, Johnny Cash, Pulp, The Pixies, Kasabian, and Muse, because I’ve heard they’re amazing live.

What does your role entail? Absolutely everything. I work with managers from production, artists, site crew and bars to name a few, to ensure that the festival runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible. It ranges from erecting fence panels to paying artists. What’s the best thing about working at the festival?
It’s amazing to see so many people come together to have fun. There is a real sense of community spirit, which is unique to Jersey and creates the friendliest atmosphere you will experience at any festival. It’s also great to watch world class acts here in the Island. What’s been your favourite Jersey Live memory from over the years? It’s impossible to pick a single event, as there have been so many over the years. Snow Patrol’s headline set from 2006, The Prodigy blowing peoples minds in 2008 and Paul Weller demonstrating his unquestionable talent last year all stand out for me. Who would be your own personal dream Jersey Live headliner, dead or alive? Dead: Elvis / Michael Jackson. Alive: Muse / Artic Monkeys / Daft Punk If I had a time machine I would get Led Zeppelin from 1971.

ahoy there jersey IQ PIRATE TEASE STAGE An important part of the festival since 2008, the iQ Pirate Tease Stage aims to showcase Jersey’s eclectic array of bands and artists.. For an island measuring nine-by-five miles, the range of talent here is incredibly impressive, and Jersey Live aims to do its bit by providing a platform for those talents to shine.

CLIC SARGENT THE CHILDREN’S CHARITY OF JERSEY LIVE 2011

As the Channel Islands’ biggest music festival, Jersey Live has a responsibility and a commitment to contribute to the local community that we are a part of. We endeavour to support good causes in any way possible, and as well as hosting the Pirate Tease Stage to raise money for Headway Jersey, we have previously partnered with charities including Jersey Hospice, NSPCC Pathways and the Durrell can collecting initiative. A simple but effective way to raise charity funds each year is through the sale of 12 and under festival tickets. Each year we donate the proceeds of these sales to a designated children’s charity and last year raised £5,565 for NSPCC Pathways – as well as £5153 for Headway Jersey through the Tease Stage. For 2011, we have teamed up with CLIC Sargent Cancer Care for Children (Jersey), and hope that the enjoyment of children at Jersey Live can help to benefit other less fortunate youngsters,. CLIC Sargent Cancer Care for Children (Jersey) was started in September 1974 in order to help children who suffer from all forms of cancer. Funds raised locally

are spent entirely for the benefit of local children and are used to give help in many ways, for example with heating expenses and warm clothing, to assist with airfares for families to travel to the UK to visit children undergoing treatment, accommodation and subsistence for families whilst in the UK, helping with nursing relief when a child is at home, medical expenses, etc. Help may also include the occasional holiday, toys for the child and other extras which may bring a little happiness to a child suffering from cancer.

Children and their families who may qualify for assistance are referred to CLIC via the Jersey General, or they can be approached direct by contacting Jane Powell on 01534 865932. CLIC Sargent receive no public funding and are dependent on the efforts of volunteers and generosity of private donations. Anyone wanting further information about the charity or would like to make a donation should email CLICSargent@jerseymail.co.uk So if you’ve bought a children’s ticket this weekend, remember that you’re helping to make a big difference!
