PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Friends of Agia Sophia Academy, My heart is full of gratitude as I share our accomplishments at the completion of ASA’s thirteenth year. We experienced a wonderful season of new leadership and development as a thriving school community, united in our vision to provide a holistic and challenging education founded upon Orthodox Christian values. It is with the overwhelming support of donors, volunteers, Board members, parents, and staff members that we continue to offer an excellent Orthodox education to our students! You will see the specifics of our achievements in this Annual Report, but first, a few notable highlights from 2016-17: • Broadening of Pan-Orthodox school network through community events and outreach • Integration of new student laptops in the classrooms • Generous grants supporting hands-on science curriculum and field experiences • Building improvements to increase student safety • Sponsorship of our Greek language program to ensure continuity and provide new language resources • Standardized test scores far surpassing national average • Beautification of our school grounds through student artwork At the close of the school year, we welcomed our hosting parish’s new head priest, Fr. Matthew Swehla, and his family. Fr. Matthew has eagerly joined our School Board and will serve as our spiritual mentor. We also look forward to his 3 elementary-aged boys starting at ASA this Fall! What a blessing it is to have his family’s presence in our school community. As we enter into our fourteenth year of operation, I look forward to partnering with and expanding our exceptional network of Board members, parents, friends and generous supporters. Please keep us all in your prayers and continue to support Orthodox education for the next generation! With love in Christ,
Ranae Rice, Principal
ACADEMIC
“I have so many amazing memories from ASA, and I would love to have more but unfortunately this is my last year here. Some of these memories are hatching chicks Kindergarten, science this year, (Environments watching our animals do things, helping them and watching them die, Magnetism and Electricity we created circuits, and Astronomy we learned mind blowing facts), and playing with my friends every day. I am very sad to leave ASA and as I have already said I would love to have more memories so, I will try to make the most of this last week at this amazing school.” ~ Petros Blankenstein Save the Date & join us next year for our Spring Fine Arts Night & 5th Grade Graduation Celebration on Friday, June 8th at 6:30pm.

5TH GRADE GRADUATES Agia Sophia Academy is proud to annouce our 2017 5th grade graduates! While the student graduation speeches were presented at our Spring Fine Arts night, we like to share excerpts & highlights from the orginal presentations. “My years here were filled with fun and learning, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place or environment to learn all the things I did over the course of my times here. I think that this experience at ASA will help me in my future years in school and when I grow up. I have grown close to many people here, and I will be sad to leave such a good school. My thanks to all the teachers, my parents and the school board, for making this 7-year journey a possible and memorable one.”
Fifty-one children were enrolled this year with 11 local parishes represented throughout our student body, as well as 7 children who were non-Orthodox.
At ASA, we are proud of our students continued high scores and academic growth. This year, we introduced a new, computer-based standardized testing called MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) which tests students each trimester to compare their progress throughout the year, as well as to the national norm.
~ Elizabeth Law “Wow. I can’t believe that time flies by so fast. It seems that just a year ago I was cheerfully yet cautiously approaching the school doors that I now know so well. As soon as I entered the Montessori room for the first time, I was immediately put under the spell of the class: the neatness, the activities, the other kids and the teachers. I instantly started making friends and developed a special relationship with the teachers. I remember how distressed I was on the last day of school that first year on the departure for summer vacation: “Mommy,” I wailed, “Who’s going to take care of the teachers?” ~ Maria Daniels
HATS OFF TO YOU!
Additionally, the reading level of the Agia Sophia Academy students shows outstanding results, even with our English Language Learners. Regular use of DRAs (Developmental Reading Assessments) allows us to monitor progress & growth of each student’s reading level, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.

EMBRACING OUR COMMUNITY This year brought a focus on building relationships within the greater Pan-Orthodox community. We enjoyed hosting park playdates, pumpkin patch outing, end of year BBQ, lunch with the seniors at St. John the Baptist, and coffee hours after our all school monthly Divine Liturgies. As a school, we participated in two service projects over the course of the year. We made 60 hygiene kits for IOCC and helped collect 25 lb. bags of dried beans and rice for Project Mexico and St. Innocent Orphanage through an 8th grade service project for one of our ASA graduates!
CLERGY VISITS One of the highlights for our students is the monthly clergy visits. Local clergy meet with our students and spend time teaching more about our faith. Special thank you to the following clergy: • Fr. John Mancantelli • Fr. Paul Paris • Fr. Theodore Dorrance • Dn. Cuthbert Downs Thank you, also, to the clergy who helped us celebrate our Feast Day (Mid-Pentecost). Five clergy representing four jurisdictions served Liturgy: • Fr. Timothy Pavlatos • Fr.
