“This school has given me a great foundation surrounding me with my religion and having me attend the liturgies. I will always miss being able to walk down the hall and high five a priest on my way. I promise to you now in this blue hat I, Stella Gatziolis, will forever treasure the moments here at this school.” ~ Stella Gatziolis (2012-2019) “When it came to math, I got confused, but Fr. Ed never gave up and spent time with me to make sure I understood it. I’m going to miss Fr. Ed the most, but I will remember all his humorous sayings and that he never let us give up.” ~ Lydia Koshkaroff (2013-2019) “Our art teacher Mrs. Perussi gave me a huge experience of creative art, but most of all I will never forget about the glass icons we made, I really appreciate it. Thank you Kyria Maria for teaching me Greek, that I will keep with me my whole life and Kyria Thespina for teaching me Greek Byzantine chant that sounds awesome with the whole class.” ~ Alexander Metodiev (2013-2019) “I still remember the time I fell and every one ran to ask if I was okay. I also remember one day we were playing mountain ball and I kicked the ball so far, everyone congratulated me.” ~ Amillah Gilmore (2015-2019) “I’ve been in this school for 2 years, but in that short time, I’ve had an amazing experience. In my whole life, I’ve been in four states and three schools, but I can say undoubtedly that this one was the best. I just can’t believe that I’m leaving. ~ Thomas Swehla (2017-2019) “Friendship, truth, kindness, and prayer are what we have here at ASA, we work hard at achieving goals high in the sky with our feet on the ground. Every day we learn something new.” ~ Sebastiana Ivkin (2012-2019) Congratulations and many years to our 5th grade graduates! May your future be blessed. Agia Sophia Academy in Beaverton, OR Celebrates 15 Years Agia Sophia Academy, the only Pan-Orthodox Christian School in the state of Oregon, welcomed His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos to their 15th Anniversary Gala Dinner and Auction Fundraiser held on June 1, 2019 at the Oregon Zoo. The festive evening, themed Wild About Education, included many ways that the attendees could offer support to Agia Sophia Academy, and through their generosity, they raised over $40,000 to further the mission of the school. Over 200 people from Orthodox parishes throughout the Portland area attended, along with several clergy, all of whom recognize the value of the education that Agia Sophia Academy has provided for the past 15 years. During his Keynote Address, Metropolitan Gerasimos stated, “There are so many negative influences in the world that take us away from those things that are good and holy and joyful. Education is a gift that we can give our children. But an education that we can give them that is also rooted in our faith is one of immeasurable value. The name of your school is perfect for what you are doing – Agia Sophia – Holy Wisdom. For wisdom goes far beyond what can be taught, but rather is gained through discernment, prayer and careful guidance, experience and sound judgment. Even the youngest of your students’ gains wisdom from their time at Agia Sophia, and what they are being taught today will stay with them. Early childhood education is a pivotal time in the development of our children, and you are setting a standard of excellence that will always be a part of their formation.” The pastoral visit of Metropolitan Gerasimos to Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church and Agia Sophia Academy in Beaverton, OR concluded with a tour of the school and interacting with the students in their classrooms, and also meeting with the teachers, conveying his gratitude for the dedication and love they impart through their instruction. Agia Sophia Academy (ASA) offers a Montessori 3-6 year-old program and Kindergarten through 5th grade elementary school program. ASA operates out of Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Beaverton, Oregon. The mission of ASA is to educate the whole child by providing a rich academic and arts curriculum, grounded in Orthodox Christian values, while fostering love of learning, personal responsibility and respect for each person.
