BLACK EYED PEAS
Our culture, background, location or just desire to try new things may spark tradition in our lifestyle. Whether the tradition is a specific holiday meal or perhaps following “lady luck” through superstition many people believe in following tradition for good luck on New Years in order to start the new year in a positive light and set up for success! With that we figured why not share a southern tradition that dates back to the 1800’s, Black Eyed Peas. There are a variety of recipes that are all over the internet, the best one is in the eye of the consumer but this one I tend to enjoy quite a bit and it is super easy as a DIY in the Slow-Cooker!

Ingredients
1 pound black eyed peas
4-6 slices of bacon, chopped
2 cups of cooked ham, chopped
1 ham bone, if available
1 medium onion, diced
3 cups chicken broth
3 cup water
½ teaspoon garlic powder
salt & pepper, to taste
Optional: For a kick of spice add diced jalapeños to preference
Directions
1. If you are using fresh black eyed peas, open and rinse your black eyed peas.
2. Place all ingredients into a slow-cooker.
3. Cook on low 5-6 hours or high 3-4 stirring frequently (black eyed peas become tender during cooking process, finish to tender preference.).
4. Salt to taste. Enjoy with white- rice or with your meat of choice!
