Με ιδιαίτερη χαρά παρουσιάζουμε αυτήν την έκθεση, η οποία αντλεί την έμπνευσή της από τον Πενταδάκτυλο, μια οροσειρά με δεσπόζουσα θέση στην Κύπρο. Ο Πενταδάκτυλος είναι ο ίδιος ένα θρυλικό βουνό που έχει δεθεί άρρηκτα με το Έπος του Διγενή Ακρίτα και την εποχή που οι ακρίτες-πολεμιστές του Βυζαντίου φρουρούσαν τα σύνορα της Αυτοκρατορίας. Το Έπος του Διγενή Ακρίτα αντικατοπτρίζει μια πραγματικότητα της ιστορίας της Κύπρου, καθώς και τον ρόλο της οροσειράς αυτής ως προκεχωρημένο φυλάκιο της Βυζαντινής Αυτοκρατορίας, γεγονός που έχει καθορίσει έως έναν βαθμό τη μετέπειτα πορεία της ιστορίας της νήσου και των σχέσεών της με τους γείτονές της. Σήμερα, η οροσειρά συνδέεται με τη ζωή του νησιού με πολλαπλούς τρόπους. Ο Πενταδάκτυλος είναι ένας παράδεισος βιοποικιλότητας: αποτελεί το ενδιαίτημα μεγάλης ποικιλίας ειδών και υποειδών νυχτερίδας, πουλιών και φυτών, πολλά εκ των οποίων είναι ενδημικά της Κύπρου, αλλά ορισμένα δυστυχώς επαπειλούμενα στις μέρες μας λόγω της συνεχιζόμενης καταστροφικής ανθρώπινης δραστηριότητας στο βουνό. Συνιστά επίσης ζωογόνο δύναμη, εξασφαλίζοντας υδάτινους πόρους –εξαιρετικά αναγκαίους σε μια άνυδρη γη– και συμβάλλοντας στην πρόληψη της απερήμωσης ενός μεγάλου μέρους της νήσου. Όσον αφορά τα φυσικά χαρακτηριστικά του, με την πάροδο του χρόνου η συνεχής εκμετάλλευση των λατομείων έχει αφήσει «πληγές» στην οροσειρά, προκαλώντας με τη σειρά τους σοβαρές περιβαλλοντικές συνέπειες. Αυτή ακριβώς η διάσταση αντανακλάται στις δημιουργίες κάποιων από τους καλλιτέχνες, το έργο των οποίων παρουσιάζεται εδώ. Η έκθεση αυτή προτείνει μια νέα θεώρηση του Πενταδάκτυλου μέσα από τον φακό της σύγχρονης καλλιτεχνικής έκφρασης. Υπόσχεται έτσι να συνεισφέρει ουσιαστικά στον διάλογο που έχει αναπτυχθεί γύρω από τον ρόλο του ως ζωντανό μέρος του παρελθόντος, του παρόντος και του μέλλοντος της Κύπρου. Θα ήθελα να συγχαρώ τη διευθύντρια της Λεβεντείου Πινακοθήκης Λουκία Λοΐζου Χατζηγαβριήλ για αυτήν τη διορατική προοπτική της έκθεσης, και να εκφράσω την ιδιαίτερη εκτίμησή μου προς τον επιμελητή Σάββα Χριστοδουλίδη, ο οποίος συνέλαβε την αρχική ιδέα για την έκθεση. Θα ήθελα επίσης να συγχαρώ τους συνεργάτες μας για την υψηλή ποιότητα της έκθεσης και να ευχαριστήσω όλους όσοι συνετέλεσαν στην επιτυχία της με δάνεια σημαντικών έργων. FOREWORD

It is a pleasure to introduce this exhibition, which draws its inspiration from Pentadaktylos, a mountain and a mountain range that have a prominent place in Cyprus. Pentadaktylos itself is a mountain of legend, so named because of its link to the Epic of Digenes Akritas and to an age when Byzantine warriors defended the frontiers of empire. The Digenes Akritas Epic reflects fact in the history of Cyprus as an outpost of the Byzantine Empire, a situation that, to an extent, has determined the subsequent course of the island’s history and of its relations with its neighbours.

Today, the mountain range is linked to life on the island in many ways. Pentadaktylos is a treasure trove of biodiversity: home to a wide range of botanical, bat and bird species and subspecies, many endemic to Cyprus, but some to a degree now sadly threatened by on-going and destructive human activity on the mountain. It is also a life-giving force, securing water – much needed in an arid land – and helping to prevent the desertification of a large part of the island. In physical terms and over the years, stone quarrying has scarred the mountain range, and this has resulted in serious environmental consequences, a situation reflected in their art by some of the artists whose work is presented here. This exhibition now proposes a new reading of Pentadaktylos through the lens of contemporary artistic creation. It thus promises to contribute to the lively discourse surrounding the mountain as a living part of Cyprus’ past, present and future.

I would like to congratulate the Director of the A. G. Leventis Gallery, Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel, for this insightful exhibition concept and to extend particular appreciation to the Curator, Savvas Christodoulides, who initially conceived the idea for the show.

I would like also to commend and thank our collaborators for the high quality of the exhibition and all those who have contributed to its success.

This exhibition marks the fifth anniversary of the A. G. Leventis Gallery and provides an opportunity for the organisation of a parallel exhibition on the same subject at the Leventis Municipal Museum, which celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in 2019. The A. G. Leventis Foundation is proud to support both the Leventis Municipal Museum and the A. G. Leventis Gallery as part of its promotion of culture and of cultural synergies on the island of Cyprus.

ΠΡΟΛΟΓΟΣ

Για μένα ο Πενταδάκτυλος είναι κάτι περισσότερο από μια οροσειρά – η οροσειρά που δεσπόζει στη βόρεια πλευρά της πόλης μου Λευκωσίας. Το χωριό της γιαγιάς μου Άννας Λοϊζίδου βρίσκεται στους πρόποδες του μεγάλου βουνού – σήμερα στην κατεχόμενη περιοχή της Κύπρου. Σε μια από τις κορυφές του, τη Χαλεύκα, γιορτάζαμε έως το 1974 το Πάσχα. Στη βόρεια πλαγιά του, κάτω από την ομώνυμη κορυφή, οι ελαιώνες του παππού μου Παναγιώτη έφθαναν κι άγγιζαν τη θάλασσα της Κερύνειας. Μνήμες που δεν έχουν σβήσει, αλλά που χάνονται στη νοσταλγία του παρελθόντος και στην αναπόληση των χρόνων που έφυγαν. Ο Πενταδάκτυλος συνδέεται με την ιστορία του τόπου μας με έναν ιδιαίτερο τρόπο. Είναι τα φρούρια και οι πέτρες του, η δύναμη αυτής της περήφανης οροσειράς που χρησίμευε σαν κάστρο, σαν οχυρό προστασίας της Λευκωσίας, από την αρχαιότητα και έπειτα – ιδίως στα χρόνια των Σαρακηνών και των Βυζαντινών, στα χρόνια των Φράγκων και των Βενετών. Είναι ένα βουνό, μια οροσειρά που δεσπόζει επιβλητικά· θα έλεγε κανείς πως επιβάλλεται με τον τραχύ όγκο του στη Λευκωσία. Είναι όμως και ένα αδιέξοδο στη σημερινή πραγματικότητα. Ίσως, και για τον λόγο αυτόν, η πρόταση του καταξιωμένου εικαστικού και ακαδημαϊκού Σάββα Χριστοδουλίδη με γέμισε ενθουσιασμό. Γιατί εμπερίεχε την ελπίδα ότι μέσα από μια σύγχρονη εικαστική προσέγγιση του Πενταδάκτυλου οι μνήμες –οι κοινές μνήμες, και μαζί και οι δικές μου– θα εμπλουτίζονταν με ένα νέο, σύγχρονο, δυναμικό και αισιόδοξο μήνυμα: ότι μέσα από την τέχνη και την εικαστική δημιουργία «ξαναβλέπουμε» το παρελθόν, το παρόν και το μέλλον. Και είναι αυτή η αγέρωχη, δεσπόζουσα και καθηλωτική φιγούρα μιας οροσειράς που «οριοθετεί» με τον τρόπο της τη σύγχρονη ιστορία μας. Η νέα αυτή προσωρινή έκθεση της Λεβεντείου Πινακοθήκης σηματοδοτεί επίσης και τα πέντε πρώτα χρόνια από την ίδρυσή της. Αποτελεί μία αφορμή για να γιορτάσουμε την πρώτη μας πενταετία. Και είναι σημαντικό μια τέτοια έκθεση, που ενέχει και επετειακό χαρακτήρα, να αφιερωθεί στη σύγχρονη εικαστική δημιουργία – του τόπου μας κατά κύριο λόγο, αλλά και του ευρύτερου ελληνικού χώρου στη συνέχεια. Ταυτόχρονα, όμως, με την έκθεση αυτήν εγκαινιάζουμε και την πρώτη κοινή μας δράση με το Λεβέντειο Δημοτικό Μουσείο Λευκωσίας, που και αυτό γιορτάζει, το 2019, 30 χρόνια λειτουργίας και προσφοράς στον τόπο μας. Η απόφαση για την κοινή αυτήν έκθεση συνιστά ακόμη μια αφορμή για να ανακοινώσουμε τη νέα δομή και τους στόχους του Συνδέσμου Φίλων του Λεβέντειου

Δημοτικού Μουσείου και της Λεβεντείου Πινακοθήκης. Ο Σύνδεσμος, που ιδρύθηκε το 1986 για να στηρίξει τη δημιουργία του Μουσείου, ύστερα από μια επιτυχημένη πορεία τόσων χρόνων, αποφάσισε σε γενική συνέλευση το καλοκαίρι του 2018 να προσθέσει στο καταστατικό του την ομόφωνη απόφαση των μελών του να είναι πλέον «Φίλοι» και υποστηρικτές και της Πινακοθήκης. Έτσι, ο (κοινός πλέον) Σύνδεσμος στηρίζει την έκθεση αυτήν ως επιβεβαίωση της νέας πορείας του και του νέου ρόλου που καλείται να διαδραματίσει για τα δύο μουσεία. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τους συλλέκτες και τους καλλιτέχνες που πρόθυμα προσέφεραν έργα τους για τους σκοπούς της έκθεσης. Ιδιαίτερες ευχαριστίες θα ήθελα να εκφράσω στην ψυχή του έργου αυτού, στον επιμελητή, εικαστικό και ακαδημαϊκό Σάββα Χριστοδουλίδη. Ο ίδιος ανέλαβε την επιλογή των καλλιτεχνών και συντόνισε όχι μόνο το σύγχρονο εικαστικό κομμάτι της έκθεσης εδώ, στη Λεβέντειο Πινακοθήκη, αλλά και την έρευνα και την προετοιμασία έκθεσης που θα ανοίξει στο κοινό, με λίγους μήνες διαφορά, στο Λεβέντειο Δημοτικό Μουσείο. Θα ήθελα επίσης να ευχαριστήσω τη διευθύντρια του Δημοτικού Μουσείου Δήμητρα ΠαπανικόλαΜπακιρτζή για τη συνεργασία, καθώς και τη Λευκή Μιχαηλίδου, αρχαιολόγο και μέλος του Συνδέσμου Φίλων του Μουσείου, που συνέβαλε επίσης στην έρευνα. Τέλος, ευχαριστώ την ομάδα της Πινακοθήκης τόσο για τον συντονισμό της δράσης αυτής, όσο και για τον ενθουσιασμό με τον οποίον αγκάλιασαν την ιδέα να φιλοξενήσουμε μια προσωρινή έκθεση με έργα σύγχρονης εικαστικής δημιουργίας. Ιδιαίτερες ευχαριστίες επίσης στην Appios Communications για τον σχεδιασμό του λογότυπου και για την προώθηση της έκθεσης, αλλά και στην αρχιτέκτονα Νάγια Σαββίδου που συνεργάστηκε με τον επιμελητή για την παρουσίαση των έργων με έναν λιτό και καθόλα σύγχρονο τρόπο έκθεσής τους. PREFACE

To me, the Pentadaktylos is more than a mountain range – the one that looms above the northern side of the city of Nicosia.

In the great mountain’s foothills, today part of occupied Cyprus, lies the village of my grandmother, Anna Loizidou. Until 1974, we would celebrate Easter on one of its summits, Halefka. On the northern side below this peak were my grandfather Panagiotis’ olive groves, which extended down to the sea at Kyrenia. These are memories that have not been extinguished but remain lost in nostalgia and in reverie of the years gone by.

The Pentadaktylos is connected to the history of our country in a unique way. It is the castles and boulders, the strength of this proud mountain range, which served from Antiquity onwards – especially in the age of the Saracens and the Byzantines, the Franks and the Venetians – as a fortress, as Nicosia’s stronghold. It is a mountain, a range that rises majestically, imposing, one might say, its rugged bulk over Nicosia. Yet in today’s world, it is also an impasse.

This perhaps explains my enthusiasm upon reading the exhibition proposal from the eminent visual artist and art historian Savvas Christodoulides. It harboured the hope that, by approaching the Pentadaktylos through contemporary art, memories – our common memories, as well as my own – would be enriched with a new, contemporary, dynamic and positive message: that through art and the act of creation we can ‘re-envisage’ the past, present and future. It is this lofty, looming, spellbinding figure of a mountain range that, in its own way, ‘marks out’ our modern history.

This new temporary exhibition at the A. G. Leventis Gallery also signals the culmination of the Gallery’s first five years of operation, affording us an occasion to celebrate its fifth anniversary. It is significant that an exhibition of such a commemorative nature be dedicated, as this one is, to contemporary visual art, primarily in our country, but also in the broader Greek world. At the same time, with this exhibition we are inaugurating our first joint initiative with the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, which is also celebrating an anniversary in 2019 – its thirtieth year of operation and service to our country.

The decision to organise this joint exhibition also provides an opportunity to announce the new organisational structure and goals of the Association of the Friends of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia and the A. G. Leventis Gallery. After years of

successful service, the Association, which was founded in 1986 to support the creation of the Museum, decided at its General Assembly in summer 2018 to add to its charter its members’ unanimous decision to be thenceforth ‘Friends’ and supporters of the Gallery as well. Thus, the (now joint) Association is supporting this exhibition in confirmation of this new direction and the new role it is called upon to play in the life of both museums.

I would like to thank the collectors and artists who graciously made their works available for the purposes of the exhibition. I wish especially to thank the Curator, Savvas Christodoulides, who has been the heart and soul of this project. He selected the artists and coordinated not only the contemporary visual arts section of the exhibition at the A. G. Leventis Gallery, but also the research and preparation of the exhibition that will open to the public at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia in May 2019.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to the Director of the Municipal Museum, Demetra Papanikola-Bakirtzi, for her cooperation, and to Lefki Michaelidou, archaeologist and member of the Association of the Friends of the Museum, who contributed to the research.

Finally, I would like to thank the Gallery team, both for their work in coordinating the project and for the enthusiasm with which they embraced the idea of hosting a temporary exhibition with contemporary works of art. ΠΕΝΤΑΔΑΚΤΥΛΟΣ: ΤΟ ΕΠΕΚΕΙΝΑ ΜΙΑΣ ΠΡΩΤΕΥΟΥΣΑΣ PENTADAKTYLOS: THE YONDER SIDE OF A CAPITAL

Η παρεμπόδιση ως προϋπόθεση ελευθερίας

Πενταδάκτυλος.1 Κάλεσμα σε ενατένιση ή περιδιάβαση; Μια παρεμπόδιση στη θέαση και στη μετάβαση ή οχυρό στο ενδεχόμενο ολέθριου συμβάντος; Στη βάση αμφισημιών τίθεται το ερώτημα. Απτός και στερεός, με άλλα λόγια ιερός, ο Πενταδάκτυλος. Αν οριζόταν ως σύνορο, θα ’ταν απόλυτα συνυφασμένος με τον κανόνα του δικαίου. Τούτο, παρόλα αυτά, στις μέρες μας μοιάζει αδύνατο. Έχοντάς τον απέναντι, συμβαίνει κάτι που πλαταίνει το αντίκρισμα και μεγαλώνει την προσήλωση σε αυτό που ονομάζουμε ασύγκριτο, απρόσβλητο και απροσμέτρητο. Έτσι μπορεί να ιδωθεί ο Πενταδάκτυλος. Ως πρακτική αφήγησης του ιερού, ως ηθική προοπτική αποδοχής ή εναντίωσης στην περατότητα. Θα μπορούσε αναμφίβολα να είναι ο «βράχος» που ο Ζαν-Πωλ Σαρτρ επικαλείται αναζητώντας προϋπόθεση ελευθερίας: ο βράχος που «προσδοκά να φωτιστεί από έναν σκοπό για να εκδηλωθεί ως αντίπαλος ή ως αρωγός», όπως ο ίδιος λέει.2 Για τις ανάγκες της έκθεσης, έχουν επιλεγεί έργα ζωγραφικής, σχέδια, κατασκευές, βίντεο και φωτογραφίες, με γνώμονα τη δυνατότητά τους να εγγυώνται στην εμβληματική οροσειρά της Κύπρου νέα θέαση και νέα ερμηνεία ή –όπως θα έλεγε ο Γάλλος στοχαστής– μια νέα φώτιση. Έχουν επιλεγεί έργα με γνώμονα τη δυνατότητά τους να θέτουν τόσο τον δημιουργό όσο και τον επισκέπτη στην αναπόσπαστη από τη λήθη εγρήγορση, απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση στο άνοιγμα του ερωτήματος: Γιατί, μιλώντας για τον Πενταδάκτυλο, γίνεται πλέον λόγος για θεώρηση μιας αλήθειας που απαξιώθηκε και όχι για οροσειρά που χρήζει απεικόνισης; Η οροσειρά αποτελεί τη βόρεια κυρίαρχη θέα της Λευκωσίας. Καλεί την πόλη να απλωθεί μέχρι τις παρυφές της, ενώ συνάμα τιθασεύει την προσπέλασή της. Παρεμπόδιση, φραγμός, αλλά κυρίως απόκρημνο φόντο (fundus deruptus), ο Πενταδάκτυλος προβάλλει σήμερα ως άρση ενός επέκεινα. Από την Ανεξαρτησία εντούτοις, κυρίως όμως από την εισβολή του ’74 και εντεύθεν, τις καθαρά τοπιογραφικές προσεγγίσεις πλαισιώνουν γλυπτά, κατασκευές και αφαιρετικές συνθέσεις.3 Η υπό κατοχή οροσειρά του Πενταδάκτυλου δεν αποτελεί πλέον στην αντίληψη των καλλιτεχνών «εξωτερικότητα του υπάρχοντος» κατά τον Γάλλο στοχαστή Σαρτρ, εννοώντας την κατανόηση του θεατού σύμφωνα με την έξω όψη του, αλλά ηθική οριοθέτηση. Τίθεται ζήτημα θέσης ως προς το αντικείμενο και συνεπώς νέας θέασής του· με άλλα λόγια, μιας νέας συνθήκης που οδηγεί τον καλλιτέχνη-θιασώτη στην αναζήτηση ενός «συντελεστή εναντίωσης»4 και που στην προκειμένη περίπτωση δεν είναι άλλος από το σχολιαζόμενο ορεινό μόρφωμα. Ο Σαρτρ εμμένει στην άποψη ότι ο άνθρωπος είναι ελεύθερος μόνο όταν δοκιμάζει μια σχέση εναντίωσης με ό,τι υπάρχει στον περιβάλλοντα χώρο· δηλαδή, όταν συνδιαλέγεται με έναν ανθιστάμενο κόσμο. Στο σημείο αυτό αποδίδεται τόσο

το εννοιολογικό όσο και το υφολογικό ρήγμα ανάμεσα στα προγενέστερα εγχειρήματα –εικονιστικά κυρίως– και στις σύγχρονες προτάσεις που η έκθεση φιλοξενεί. Η υποχώρηση του αισθητού προς όφελος του νοητού συνεπάγεται την παραγωγή ή επιλογή έργων για τις ανάγκες της έκθεσης, έξω από όποια αισθητική διάταξη τοπίου. Ο Κωνσταντίνος Ταλιώτης επαναπραγματεύεται την ιδέα δημιουργίας ενός Κέντρου Ειρήνης στη βάση σχεδίου που οραματίστηκε τη δεκαετία του ’50 η Αμερικανίδα εκδότρια και ευεργέτιδα των Τεχνών Caresse Crosby, έχοντας πλάι της τον αρχιτέκτονα και φιλόσοφο Buckminster Fuller. Έπειτα από σειρά συναντήσεων με τον Μακάριο το 1957 στην Αθήνα, οι δύο Αμερικανοί έρχονται στην Κύπρο το 1966 προκειμένου να επιλέξουν χώρο ανέγερσης μεγάρου. Το ενδιαφέρον τους επικεντρώνεται σε περιοχές του Πενταδάκτυλου. Σε διάσκεψη Τύπου μάλιστα, στο Προεδρικό Μέγαρο, διασαφηνίζουν τις αρχές του προγράμματός τους.5 Το μεγαλεπήβολο σχέδιο της Crosby μένει εντούτοις ανεκπλήρωτο, για να φαντάζει σήμερα ουτοπικό. Σε πρώτη ανάγνωση, το έργο του Γλαύκου Κουμίδη μοιάζει με σπουδή εδαφολογίας. Το ΜΕΒΙΟ6 διακρίνεται για την πληρότητά του. Το περιεχόμενό του πλαταίνει μέχρι τις εσχατιές της επιφάνειας, δίνοντας την εντύπωση ότι ο καλλιτέχνης επιχείρησε μια εστίαση σε τμήμα ενός όλου. Στην απουσία φόντου ή άλλης διεξοδικής επιφάνειας οφείλεται και η εντύπωση ενός ασφυκτικά κλειστού χώρου. Το έδαφος ανασηκώθηκε, θα έλεγα, ανάγοντας τη σχέση με τον παρατηρητή του έργου σε καθαρά μετωπική και αδιέξοδη. Στη σημασία του τμήματος και στην εκ του σύνεγγυς θέασή του εστιάζει το ενδιαφέρον της και η Χάρις Επαμεινώνδα. Η επιλογή τμήματος μιας εικόνας σε βιβλίο ή περιοδικό και η φωτογράφησή του με μεγεθυντικό φακό και μηχανή Polaroid συνιστούν το σκεπτικό έργων που η καλλιτέχνις πραγματοποίησε κατά την περίοδο 2008-2009. Στη θεματολογία της δεν λείπουν τμήματα οροσειρών και άλλων φυσικών περιοχών. Η ίδια εμμένει στην αφηγηματική αυτάρκεια του τμήματος μιας εικόνας, αναπαράγοντάς την φωτογραφικά. Καλλιεργεί μια μέθοδο εστίασης που ο Ρολάν Μπαρτ αποκαλούσε «studium»:7 βιαστική προσήλωση σε κάτι χωρίς ιδιαίτερη οξύτητα. Όταν σχέσεις εγγύτητας δεν είναι εφικτές, το μάτι μηχανεύεται τρόπους και πρακτικές, ώστε να ανασύρει προς το μέρος του αυτό που μοιάζει μακρινό, σχεδόν αποκομμένο. Η Λητώ Κάττου προτείνει την επιγραφή-καθρέφτη If I Could Be Who You Wanted. Το υλικό ανάγει τη λεκτική διατύπωση σε περιοχή συνεύρεσης του εγγράφοντος –στην περίπτωση αυτήν είναι η καλλιτέχνις– με άλλο πρόσωπο. Οι σχηματικές κλιμακώσεις της επιγραφής προσδίδουν στην επιφάνεια χαρακτήρα γεωγραφικής διατύπωσης με κορυφώσεις και υποχωρήσεις. Η επιγραφή αποτελεί μια από τις «αληθινά ταπεινόφρονες απόπειρες να παραχωρηθεί στο γράφειν μια ταπεινή θέση στον ιστό του μελλοντικού πολιτισμού», όπως θα ισχυριζόταν ο Vilém Flusser.8 Το έργο διατηρεί εντός του την ιστορική αλφαβητική εμπειρία και επιβεβαιώνει τη σημασία της γραμμικής σκέψης. Μια αλυσίδα, σε καμπυλόμορφο σχηματισμό, υπογραμμίζει την επιγραφή και συνάμα την υποδέχεται. Ο Κώστας Σαχπάζης προτείνει το έργο Let’s Meet at 3 am: επιγραφή από νέον που αναρριχάται σε δέσμη καλαμιών. Ο συσχετισμός του με τη βλάσφημη φωτεινή

επιγραφή που τα βράδια κάνει, από τις παρυφές του Πενταδάκτυλου στις ελεύθερες περιοχές, ακατάπαυστα clin d’œil είναι αναπόφευκτος. Ανάλογη τοποθέτηση θα επιχειρούσα και για το πεντάκτινο μεταλλικό αστέρι του Ανδρέα Ιωακείμ-Καϊμάκη. Ο καλλιτέχνης αφήνει κατά μέρος τους ισχυρούς συμβολισμούς μιας πεντάλφας και προσδίδει στην κατασκευή του ιδιότητες καθόλα ιδιάζουσες. Αυτό κεντρίζει βλοσυρά το βλέμμα και ταυτόχρονα το φράζει. Το βίντεο του Νίκου Στέφου δανείζεται τον τίτλο του από την ονομασία ενδημικού φυτού που συναντά κανείς σε περιοχές του Πενταδάκτυλου: τη σφακομηλιά ή επιστημονικά Salvia veneris. Το άνθος του εν λόγω φυτού διατρέχει την προβαλλόμενη επιφάνεια δημιουργώντας σχηματισμούς αδιάλειπτα μεταβαλλόμενους. Ο καλλιτέχνης επισημαίνει τον κίνδυνο εξάλειψης της Salvia veneris, αφού το καθεστώς κατοχής δεν επέτρεψε τη συμπερίληψη της οροσειράς στο πρόγραμμα Natura 2000. Ο Στέφου απαντά στον πολυδιάστατο αποκλεισμό μιας γεωγραφικής περιοχής, ανασύροντας τη μνήμη του αρώματός της και ανάγοντάς την σε εικόνα καθόλα ζωντανή. Ως ισχυρή οικολογική νύξη στην απρόσκοπτη φυσιογνωμική και γεωλογική αλλοίωση του Πενταδάκτυλου μπορεί να θεωρηθεί και η πρόταση του Νίκου Τρανού. Η ανεξέλεγκτη εξόρυξη πετρωμάτων σε περιοχές της οροσειράς από τους Τούρκους, με δυσμενείς αναμφίβολα συνέπειες για τη χλωρίδα της, αποτελεί γεγονός. Το «ελλιπές» δασύλλιο του Τρανού υποδηλώνει τον ισχυρισμό πως, όταν το τμήμα αποσκιρτά από την ολότητα, επέρχεται μια κενότητα συνώνυμη του άγονου. Οι προτάσεις του Κωστή Βελώνη πραγματεύονται το ζήτημα διαμέλισης ενός χώρου κατόπιν εμβολής κάθετης και επίπεδης επιφάνειας εντός του. Πρόκειται για «απαγορευτικούς μηχανισμούς στην τεκτονική τους διάσταση», όπως ο ίδιος αναφέρει σχολιάζοντας την έννοια του οχυρού.9 Τα έργα συνιστούν γεωπολιτικές διατυπώσεις κριτικού ύφους, που ωστόσο αφήνουν το ερώτημα ανοιχτό: Σε ποιο βαθμό η κάθε τύπου διαχώριση μπορεί να εξεγείρει, να κατευνάσει ή ακόμη και να κατασβέσει το αίσθημα ελευθερίας; Ο Σωκράτης Σωκράτους επιχειρεί μια γεωγραφία του θρύμματος. Συσσωρευμένα απομεινάρια φονικών εκρήξεων συνιστούν περιοχή βάναυσης μνήμης, μνήμης πολέμου. Ο καλλιτέχνης επιχειρεί μια ρεύση άλλοτε πυρακτωμένων υλικών. Οι στίχοι του Τίτου Πατρίκιου μοιάζουν να συμμερίζονται το ίδιο σκεπτικό: «το νερό κατεβάζει στο ρέμα σκουριασμένους κάλυκες και κομμάτια από χακί και πράσινα χιτώνια».10 Μια άτακτη λουριδωτή γραφή και τμήματα πλακόστρωτων διόδων διανθίζουν τη λευκή υφασμάτινη επιφάνεια. Η τεχνική της εκτύπωσης επιτρέπει στον Γιώργο Σαπουντζή ανυποχώρητες και καταθετικές διατυπώσεις γύρω από ζητήματα πρόσβασης τόσο σε ελεύθερες όσο και ανελεύθερες περιοχές. Ο καλλιτέχνης μοιάζει να μην αρέσκεται στην πρακτική της πτύχωσης. Το έργο εκδιπλώνεται αποκαλύπτοντας την εσωτερική του σύσταση, ενώ συνάμα το κατώτερό του άγονο και μαύρο τμήμα, όπως και τα λουριά στις καταλήξεις του, αποδεσμεύονται ανάγοντας τη σχέση με το δάπεδο σημαντική. Θέλω να Δω τα Βουνά μου: στη βάση της προθανάτιας επιθυμίας του Ιταλού ζωγράφου Giovanni Segantini στοιχειοθετεί την πρότασή του ο Νίκος Χαραλαμπίδης.

Επινοεί μια συνθήκη θέασης, ενδεικτική της άσβεστης ανάγκης του να εποπτεύει πατρογονική περιοχή, σε καθεστώς αποκλεισμού εδώ και χρόνια. Ένα φουγάρομάτι υποβαστάζεται από βαρέλι που χρησιμεύει ως ξυλόσομπα. Το άνω μέρος της κυλινδρικής κατασκευής επικαλύπτεται από γυαλί –λιμνάζουσα περιοχή της στέρησης–, για να φιλοξενήσει μακέτα της πατρογονικής κατοικίας του καλλιτέχνη στο κατεχόμενο από τους Τούρκους τμήμα της Κύπρου. Οι σχεδιαστικές επιφάνειες του Αλέξανδρου Τζάννη απαντούν στο σκεπτικό της έκθεσης, όντας παρεμποδιστικές στη θέαση και στη μετάβαση. Χάρτινα αλληλοδιαδεχόμενα παραπετάσματα καταδεικνύουν την εμμονή του να φράζει τον ορίζοντα και να εναντιώνεται ταυτόχρονα σε κάθε τύπου έλευση. Στην ουσία τίθεται ζήτημα προσωπικής θωράκισης και αποκλεισμού. Αν η απόσταση είναι «μεγάλη σπίθα που σχίζει, ακονίζει»,11 όπως υποστηρίζει ο ποιητής, τότε ο Τζάννης μοιάζει να την έχει κατασβήσει προς όφελος μιας εγγύτητας καθόλα αποπεμπτικής. Το έργο του Γιάννη Βαρελά εμπίπτει στην κατηγορία αφηγηματικά πλεγματικών έργων, των οποίων η εξωθημένη ηθικοπολιτική πολυπλοκότητα τα καθιστά ανάγωγα. Πρόκειται για διάφανο υβριδικό σκάφος ή ιπτάμενο θαλάσσιο τέρας, θα έλεγα. Δεν θα μπορούσα να αποφύγω τη συσχέτιση του Spaceship Columbia με εμβληματικά έργα –στη βάση ηθικών στρεβλώσεων– όπως, μεταξύ άλλων, την Guernica. Επιχειρώντας ελεύθερη προσέγγιση και ερμηνεία του έργου, επικαλούμαι ανενδοίαστα την ολέθρια έλευση τουρκικών αεροσκαφών στο βόρειο τμήμα της Κύπρου τον Ιούλιο του ’74 και τα επακόλουθά της. Ο Κωνσταντίνος Καλησπέρας, τέλος, στοχάζεται γύρω από τη δυνατότητα μετατόπισης ενός αντικειμένου από την περιοχή της χρηστικότητας σε ανάλογη συμβολισμού. Επιχειρεί έναν συζευκτικό –συνήθως γραμμικό– σχηματισμό τρισδιάστατων γεωμετρικών μοτίβων, που στην καταληκτική τους διάταξη δημιουργούν διάτρητο οχυρό. Το άκαμπτο κιγκλίδωμα του Καλησπέρα αποτελεί την εκδοχή πραγμάτωσης μιας διαχώρισης, ενώ συνάμα μάς θυμίζει ότι «τα σύνορα είναι πρωτίστως υπόθεση διανοητική και ηθική».12 Ο Πενταδάκτυλος αξιώνει ερμηνεία καθαρά τροπική και όχι τοπική. Η ύπαρξή του πραγματώνεται ως σχέση, ιδέα, εκλογή και όχι ως ευχή, όραμα ή προσδοκία. Ο Πενταδάκτυλος μας καθιστά ελεύθερους όντας ο ίδιος έλλειψη, απόσχιση, κενό ή απουσία. «Η ελευθερία είναι έλλειμμα του είναι σε σχέση με ένα δεδομένο ον, και όχι ανάδυση μιας πληρότητας του είναι», επισημαίνει ο Σαρτρ.13 Έτσι λοιπόν μπορεί να νοηθεί ο Πενταδάκτυλος: ως μια ανάγκη πλήρωσης του είναι. Οι πρακτικές της Τέχνης φαντάζουν κατάλληλες και ικανές να οδηγήσουν την ιδέα του «ελλείμματος» σε μόρφωμα. Να οδηγήσουν στην πραγμάτωση μιας σύμπλεξης των θέσεων και, επομένως, των σχέσεων ενός δημιουργού με κάτι που λογίζεται παρόν και αδιαλείπτως επερχόμενο. 01 «Η κορφή Πενταδάκτυλος που μοιάζει με ανθρώπινη παλάμη με πέντε δάκτυλα, στη φαντασία του λαού ήταν η ίδια η γροθιά του Διγενή, που ατένιζε τις απέναντι ακτές της Μικράς Ασίας. Σύμφωνα δε προς μια από τις παραδόσεις, το σχήμα της κορυφής των πέντε δακτύλων οφείλετο σε αποτύπωμα του χεριού του Διγενή, που άρπαξε απ’ εκεί ένα βράχο για να τον εκσφενδονίσει κατά των εχθρών». 03 Τα χρόνια που έπονται της ανακήρυξης της Κύπρου σε ανεξάρτητο κράτος αλλά και των γεγονότων του ’74, οι εικαστικές προτάσεις ποικίλουν και αφθονούν.

Η πάγια σχέση απεικόνισης της πρωτεύουσαςΠενταδάκτυλου καταργείται προς όφελος μιας προσέγγισης και συνεπώς εικαστικών διατυπώσεων με κριτικό υπόβαθρο. Ανάμεσα στις πρώτες αφαιρετικές συνθέσεις του Κώστα Ιωακείμ περιλαμβάνεται ο Πενταδάκτυλος (1972). Η τουρκική εισβολή είναι η αφορμή για τη μεγάλη ενότητα έργων του Γιώργου Σκοτεινού με τίτλο «Ο Κύκλος της Καταγγελίας». Στον Απογευματινό Βομβαρδισμό (1974-1975), ο Πενταδάκτυλος αποτελεί το φόντο μιας σύνθεσης με πολλαπλή πλοκή. Αποδοκιμασία για τα θλιβερά γεγονότα του ’74 εκφράζουν και τα έργα Χωρίς Τίτλο από τη σειρά «Πενταδάκτυλος» (1977), Document VI (1977-1978) και Νήσος Τις Εστίν (1979) των Μίκη Φοινικαρίδη, Λευτέρη Οικονόμου και Τάσου Στεφανίδη αντίστοιχα. Λίγο μετά την εισβολή, προτείνεται και η σειρά μικρής κλίμακας γλυπτών του Νίκου Δυμιώτη με τίτλο «Πενταδάκτυλος». Πρόκειται για έργα από πέτρα, μάρμαρο ή πηλό, με χαρακτήρα ανθρωπόμορφο. Κατά το τέλος της δεκαετίας του ’70 και έως τον θάνατό του, ο Στέλιος Βότσης εμμένει στη δημιουργία συνθέσεων σε γεωμετρικό και παραστατικό παράλληλα ύφος, στις οποίες φιλοξενούνται ζεύγη με φόντο τον Πενταδάκτυλο. Η πλειοψηφία των έργων της ενότητας αυτής δεν διαθέτει τίτλο. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η θεματική του Πενταδάκτυλου απασχολεί επίσης καλλιτέχνες νεότερης γενιάς. Obstruction as a Condition of Freedom

Pentadaktylos.1 An invitation to gaze or perambulate? An obstacle in the line of sight and route of passage or a fortress against a looming catastrophe? It is in such ambiguity that the question must be posed. Pentadaktylos, tangible and unyielding; in other words, sacred. If defined as a border, it would be perfectly consistent with the rule of law.

In our times, however, this seems impossible. As we look upon it, something happens that broadens our line of sight and focusses our attention on the incomparable, the impregnable, the unfathomable. This is how the Pentadaktylos can be seen – as an act of sacred narration, as an ethical perspective on accepting or challenging finitude.

Without a doubt, it could be the ‘crag’ that Jean-Paul Sartre invoked in his search for the conditions of freedom: the crag that, in his words, ‘waits to be illuminated by an end in order to manifest itself as adverse or helpful’.2 The paintings, drawings, installations, video and photographs in this exhibition were chosen in terms of their capacity to provide a new view or interpretation of the imposing mountain range or, as the French thinker might have said, to cast new light upon it.

The works were chosen for their ability to place creator and viewer alike in a state of vigilance inextricably linked with forgetting, a prerequisite for asking the question, why, when we speak of the Pentadaktylos, is there so much theorising about a truth that has been repudiated and not of a mountain range that calls out for interpretation?

The range dominates the view of Nicosia to the north. It invites the city to nestle in its foothills while curtailing further access. Impediment, barrier, but most of all a precipitous backdrop (fundus deruptus), the Pentadaktylos rises today as the revocation of the hereafter.

Alongside the earlier purely landscape renderings of the mountain, we find, with the advent of Independence and primarily following the invasion in 1974, works of sculpture, installations and abstract compositions.3 In the artist’s perception, the Pentadaktylos under occupation no longer constitutes an ‘exteriority of the situation’, that is, the comprehension of what is seen in terms of its outward appearance, which Sartre considered a benefit. Instead, it is a demarcation of ethical boundaries. It raises the question of what stance one takes towards the object and how it is to be seen anew.

In other words, a new situation leads the beholder – here the artist – to search for ‘a factor of resistance’,4 which, in this case, is none other than the mountainous entity itself. Sartre is adamant that we are free only when we seek to resist what exists in the surrounding environment, that is, when we are in dialogue with a world in resistance.

Herein lies the explanation for the conceptual and stylistic rift between the earlier, largely pictorial efforts and the contemporary investigations on display here.

The precedence of the conceptual over the aesthetic implies that the works on exhibit were produced or chosen on grounds other than the aesthetic depiction of landscape.

Constantinos Taliotis reworks the idea of creating a ‘World Man Center’, which draws upon a plan envisioned in the 1950s by Caresse Crosby, an American publisher and patron of the arts, with the support of the architect and philosopher Buckminster Fuller.

Following a series of meetings with Archbishop Makarios in Athens in 1957, the two Americans arrived in Cyprus in 1966 to select a site for the building. Their interest lay in the area of the Pentadaktylos, a point made clear in a press conference at the Presidential Palace.5 Crosby’s ambitious plans, however, were never realised and today seem utopian.

At first reading, Glavkos Koumides’ work MEBIO 6 seems to be a study in soil science.

It stands out for its expansiveness, its content spreading to the very edges of the surface, as if the artist wished to focus on one part of a whole. The absence of background or other surface of visual egress creates the impression of a stiflingly closed space.

The ground is raised, bringing the viewer into direct but thwarted confrontation with the work.

Haris Epaminonda also focusses her attention on the significance and close observation of the part. In her case, it is a part of an image from a book or magazine that she photographs with the aid of a magnifying lens and a Polaroid camera, a practice that featured in the artist’s work during the period 2008-2009. Her subject matter includes parts of mountain ranges and other natural environments. In reproducing the part photographically, the artist lays claim to its narrative self-sufficiency. She cultivates a manner of focussing that Roland Barthes called the studium: a general enthusiastic commitment without special acuity.7 When a relationship of proximity is not possible, the eye devises ways and means to retrieve what appears distant and removed.

Lito Kattou offers us the inscription-mirror If I Could Be Who You Wanted. The medium of the work transforms a lexical statement into a meeting space between the inscriber – in this case the artist – and another person. The schematic gradations of the inscription give a sense of geographical articulation to the surface, with sharp peaks and descents.

The inscription, as Vilém Flusser would claim, is one of those ‘modest attempts to secure a humble place for the act of writing in the cultural fabric of future society’.8 The work preserves or embodies historical experience in its script and at the same time affirms the importance of linear thought. A curved chain underlines the inscription and serves to emphasise it.

Kostas Sahpazis proposes Let’s Meet at 3 am, a neon inscription ascending a sheaf of reeds. It calls to mind the blasphemous illuminated emblem blinking ceaselessly at free Cyprus from the slopes of the Pentadaktylos.

I would advance a similar position regarding Andreas Ioakim-Kaimakis’ five-pointed metallic star. The artist sets aside the powerful symbolism of the pentacle to endow his construction with highly particular properties, brazenly fixing our gaze while blocking it at the same time.

Nico Stephou’s video borrows its title from the name of a plant endemic to the Pentadaktylos region: the Kythrean sage (Salvia veneris). The plant’s flower traverses the projected surface in constantly changing formations. The artist points out the risk of extinction that the Salva veneris faces, since the occupying forces have prevented the mountain range from being designated part of the Natura 2000 network of nature protection areas. Stephou responds to the multifaceted blockade of a geographical area by retrieving into memory its scent and elevating it to a potent icon.

Nikos Tranos’ work can also be seen as an environmental allusion to the physical and geological disfigurement of the Pentadaktylos. The rampant mining carried out by the Turks in areas of the mountain range has undoubtedly had a negative impact on the flora of the region. Tranos’ ‘defective’ copse suggests that when the part breaks away from the whole, it is succeeded by an emptiness synonymous with desolation.

The works on exhibit by Kostis Velonis interrogate how space is dismembered with the insertion of vertical and horizontal surfaces. It is an investigation into ‘an exclusionary device in architectural terms’, as the artist notes in his commentary on the notion of the fortress.9 The works are geopolitical statements of a critical nature that nonetheless leave open the question: to what extent can an instance of separation fuel, temper or even extinguish the demand for freedom?

Socratis Socratous proposes a geography of the shard. The heaped debris left behind by deadly explosions form a region of painful memory, a memory of war. The work conjures up a flow of once incandescent materials, a line of thought the poet Titos Patrikios seems to have shared when he wrote: ‘The water washes downstream rusted shells and scraps of green and khaki jackets.’10 An unruly ribbon-like script and images of bits of stone passageways are scattered over a surface of white fabric. Printing affords Yorgos Sapountzis the means to render uncompromising evidentiary statements on issues of access to territories both free and unfree. Apparently, the artist is no fan of the fold; his work unfurls to reveal its inner components, while the barren, black section at the bottom, as with the ends of the ribbons, is set free to heighten the importance of the relationship with the floor.

Nicos Charalambides has based his work I Want to See My Mountains on the last words of the Italian painter Giovanni Segantini. He invents a convention of seeing that points to his unquenchable desire to look upon his ancestral land, which has remained fenced off and inaccessible for years. A smokestack-eye rests on a barrel that serves as a wood stove. The top part of the cylindrical construction is covered in glass – the stagnant realm of deprivation – and hosts a model of the artist’s family home in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.

Alexandros Tzannis’ drawn surfaces address the concerns of the exhibition in the way in which they obstruct sight and passage. Successive paper curtains reveal the artist’s obsession with blocking the horizon and resisting ingress of any sort. His work poses the question of the self’s armour – and its isolation. If distance is that ‘great incandescent spark that rends, that hones,’11 as the poet Philippe Jaccottet claims, Tzannis seems to have extinguished it in favour of a forbidding proximity.

Jannis Varelas’ work falls within the category of those narratively woven works, whose unapologetic ethico-political complexity lend them an air of insolence. Here we have a transparent hybrid vessel or a flying sea monster, I would say. I cannot but draw an association between Spaceship Columbia and such emblematic works as Guernica that deal with instances of moral perversity. If I were to venture a free interpretation of the work, I would evoke the arrival of Turkish aircraft in the northern part of Cyprus in 1974 and its devastating aftermath.

Finally, Constantinos Kalisperas investigates how an object can be transposed from the sphere of utility to an equivalently symbolic one. His work is a cumulative – largely linear – formation of three-dimensional geographic motifs that ends in the creation of a perforated fortress. Kalisperas’ rigid grate is an instance of separation, reminding us that ‘Borders are above all an intellectual and moral matter.’12 The Pentadaktylos demands to be interpreted in terms of how, not where. Its existence is realised as relationship, concept and choice, not as wish or expectation. The Pentadaktylos renders us free because it itself is lack, separation, void, absence.

‘Freedom,’ Sartre noted, ‘is a lack of being in relation to a given being; it is not the upsurge of a full being.’13 This is how the Pentadaktylos can be thought of: as a need to fulfil being. The means at art’s disposal can well give shape to the idea of ‘lack’. They can foster the realisation of a nexus of positions and, in turn, of the artist’s relationship to something that is present and forever imminent.

and the events of 1974, works of visual art appeared in considerable number and diversity.

The long-standing pictorial relation between the capital and the Pentadaktylos was rejected in favour of a critically grounded approach and, in turn, visual art. Among Kostas Ioakim’s first abstract compositions is The Pentadaktylos (1972). The Turkish invasion triggered Giorgos Skoteinos’ large series of works entitled ‘The Cycle of Denunciation’. In his Afternoon Bombardment (1974-1975), the Pentadaktylos

serves as backdrop to a composition with

multiple plots. Condemnation of the tragic events of 1974 was expressed in works such as Untitled from the series ‘Pentadaktylos’ (1977), Document VI (1977-1978) and Nisos Tis Estin [There is an island] (1979) by Mikis Finikarides, Lefteris Economou and Tasos Stephanides, respectively.

Shortly after the invasion, Nicos Dimiotis presented a series of small-scale sculptures entitled ‘Pentadaktylos’, anthropomorphic works in stone, marble or clay. From the end of the 1970s until his death, Stelios Votsis persisted in creating geometrical landscapes that retained nonetheless a representational character and feature couples against the backdrop of the Pentadaktylos. The majority of works in this series do not have titles. It is worth noting that the younger generation of artists have also taken up the theme of the Pentadaktylos, such as Andreas Savva with his work Roots (2004) and Michael Anastassiades with his Jibutsu-Seki (2014).

Γεννήθηκε στον Πολύστυπο Λευκωσίας το 1951. Από το 1974 έως το 1979 σπούδασε γλυπτική στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών Αθηνών, στο εργαστήριο του Γιάννη Παππά. Παράλληλα, παρακολούθησε μαθήματα γυψοτεχνίας, χαλκοχυτικής και αγιογραφίας. Ζει και εργάζεται στη Λευκωσία.

Andreas Ioakim-Kaimakis, born in Polystypos, Nicosia, in 1951, studied sculpture from 1974 until 1979 at the Athens School of Fine Arts, in the workshop of Yannis Pappas. He also took classes in plaster moulding, metal casting and Byzantine painting. He lives and works in Nicosia.

He has participated in group exhibitions in both Greece and Cyprus. In 1988 and 1996 he had solo exhibitions of his drawings, paintings and sculptures at the Gloria Gallery and the Apocalypsis Gallery respectively. Individual exhibitions of his visual works were also organised in his village, Polystypos, in 2001 and 2004.

Έχει εκδώσει ποιητικές συλλογές, σταχυολογήματα των οποίων κυκλοφόρησαν το 2006 σε ψηφιακό δίσκο υπό τον τίτλο Αποστάγματα.

He has published poetry anthologies, selected extracts of which circulated in 2006 in the form of a digital audio album entitled Αποστάγματα.

Γεννήθηκε στη Λευκωσία το 1973. Σπούδασε αρχιτεκτονική στο AA School of Architecture, Λονδίνο (1992-1998). Διατηρεί το διεθνές γραφείο Constantinos Kalisperas Architectural Studio και είναι μέλος του Επιστημονικού Τεχνικού Επιμελητηρίου Κύπρου (ΕΤΕΚ).

Constantinos Kalisperas, born in Nicosia in 1973, studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London (1992-1998). He established the Constantinos Kalisperas Architectural Studio and became a member of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber [ETEK].

07 Γλαύκος Κουμίδης GLAVKOS KOUMIDES

Γεννήθηκε στη Λευκωσία το 1950. Σπούδασε αρχιτεκτονική στο AA School of Architecture, Λονδίνο (1969-1974), και ψυχολογία στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Κολωνίας, Γερμανία (19791983). Είναι μέλος του Επιστημονικού Τεχνικού Επιμελητηρίου Κύπρου (ΕΤΕΚ).

Glavkos Koumides, born in Nicosia in 1950, studied architecture at the AA School of Architecture, London (1969-1974), and psychology at the University of Cologne (19791983). He is a member of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber [ΕΤΕΚ].

Από το 1981 εκθέτει χαρακτική, ζωγραφική και εγκαταστάσεις σε πολλές ατομικές και ομαδικές εκθέσεις στην Κύπρο και στο εξωτερικό. Το 1999 εκπροσώπησε την Κύπρο στην 48η Μπιενάλε Βενετίας με το έργο Ιώτα Δασεία. Το 2008 παρουσίασε στο Δημοτικό Κέντρο Τεχνών Λευκωσίας την εκτενή αναδρομική έκθεση με τίτλο Εχέμυθον Στάγμα.

Since 1981 he has shown graphic works, paintings and installations in many solo and group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. In 1999 he represented Cyprus at the 48th Venice Biennale with the work Iota Daseia. In 2008 he showed the retrospective exhibition Salient Essence at the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre.

Γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1976. Ζει και εργάζεται στο Βερολίνο. Σπούδασε στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας (1998-2002) και στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών του Βερολίνου (2002-2006). Yorgos Sapountzis, born in Athens in 1976, lives and works in Berlin. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1998-2002) and at the Universität der Künste Berlin (2002-2006). His multimedia work engages both public and private spaces, often taking its starting point from public monuments and everyday images, objects that represent some aspect of collective and personal memory. 10 Νίκος Στέφου NICO STEPHOU

Γεννήθηκε στη Λευκωσία το 1990. Αποφοίτησε από το Τμήμα Γραφικών Σχεδιασμών της Gerrit Rietveld Academie στο Άμστερνταμ της Ολλανδίας το 2017. Τώρα εργάζεται πάνω σε ταυτότητες, έντυπα, ψηφιακά έργα και οπτική έρευνα.

Nico Stephou, born in Nicosia in 1990, graduated from the Graphic Design Department of Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2017. He is currently working on identities, printed matter, digital projects and visual research.

Η τελευταία του ατομική έκθεση με τίτλο Orbital πραγματοποιήθηκε τον Νοέμβριο του 2017 στον χώρο Thkio Ppalies στη Λευκωσία. As a self-taught electronic music producer, he has accomplished releases on several compilations of labels in Croatia, the USA and the UK, as well as an album release on Speaker Footage (Denmark).

Constantinos Taliotis, born in Nicosia in 1983, is a graduate of the Chelsea College of Art & Design of the University of the Arts, London (ΜΑ, philosophy and contemporary critical theory).

His practice focusses on narratological, aesthetic and architectural modalities deriving from popular cultural iconography and ranges from immersive installations to photographic tableaux vivants and from videos to books and objectbased sculptures.

His work has been exhibited, amongst other places, at L’Œil de Poisson, Quebec City (2018); the Petach Tikva Museum of Art, Tel Aviv (2017); Arcus Projects, Moriya, Japan (2014); Akbank Art Center, Istanbul (2012); Salone degli Incanti, Trieste (2018); the State Museum of Contemporary Art, Thessaloniki (2017); and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2012). Γεννήθηκε στους Ζάρακες Ευβοίας το 1957. Σπούδασε γλυπτική στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών (ΑΣΚΤ) της Αθήνας (1983-1988) και στην École des Βeaux-Αrts στο Παρίσι (19901991). Διδάσκει γλυπτική στην ΑΣΚΤ Αθήνας από το 1995.

Nikos Tranos, born in Zarakes, Evia, in 1957, studied sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1983-1988) and at the École des BeauxArts in Paris (1990-1991). He has been teaching sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts since 1995.

Γεννήθηκε στη Λεμεσό το 1969. Σπούδασε ψυχολογία στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Μπολόνια, αρχιτεκτονική στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Φλωρεντίας και ζωγραφική στο Accademia di Belle Arti της Φλωρεντίας. Σπούδασε επίσης ζωγραφική και γλυπτική στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας, όπου ακολούθησε και μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές σε ψηφιακές τέχνες. Συνέχισε τις διδακτορικές του σπουδές στη μηχατρονική και στα συστήματα αυτοματισμού στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Warwick, Αγγλία. Η δημιουργική του δράση είναι έντονα κοινωνικοπολιτική από την αρχή της σταδιοδρομίας του στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1980, αρχικά με καλλιτεχνικές παρεμβάσεις σε εμπόλεμες ζώνες και αμφισβητούμενες περιοχές, οι οποίες αποτέλεσαν σημείο αναφοράς στην πολιτική τέχνη. Έχει παρουσιάσει το έργο του σε τουλάχιστον 60 ατομικές εκθέσεις, σε ιδιωτικές/ δημόσιες γκαλερί και εθνικά μουσεία, όπως το Centre Pompidou στο Παρίσι ή την Turner Contemporary στο Margate, και έχει συμμετάσχει σε διεθνείς ομαδικές εκθέσεις, μεταξύ των οποίων πολλές Μπιενάλε (Αβάνα 2012, Ρίγα 2010).

Nicos Charalambides, born in Limassol in 1969, studied psychology at the University of Bologna, architecture at the University of Florence and painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He has master’s degrees in painting and in sculpture from the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he also attended postgraduate studies in digital arts. He continued his PhD studies in mechatronics and embedded robotic systems in architecture at the University of Warwick.

His creative action has been intensely sociopolitical since the beginning of his career in the late 1980s, initially with risky artistic interventions/performances in war zones and contested areas, which have been a benchmark for political art. He has exhibited worldwide in at least 60 solo exhibitions at private/ public galleries and national museums, such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and Turner Contemporary in Margate, and has participated in international group shows, among which are several biennales (Havana 2012, Riga 2010).

Η οροσειρά του Πενταδάκτυλου εμφανίζεται κάθε μέρα στο οπτικό πεδίο της Λευκωσίας ως αναπόσπαστο μέρος του λευκωσιάτικου τοπίου: ορίζει, καθορίζει και αποτελεί τον ορίζοντα της πόλης στα καθημερινά της δρώμενα. Η παρουσία του Πενταδάκτυλου είναι διαχρονικά και ακατάλυτα συνδεδεμένη με την εικόνα της Λευκωσίας τόσο για τους ντόπιους κατοίκους της όσο και για τους ξένους επισκέπτες της. Αποτελεί απροσπέλαστο προστατευτικό τείχος, αλλά και απαγορευτικό παραπέτασμα στην προς βορρά θέα. Αποτελεί επίσης πρόκληση για εξερεύνηση του επέκεινα. Όταν, τον 10ο αιώνα, η Λευκωσία αναδείχθηκε κέντρο της βυζαντινής διοίκησης του νησιού, ο Πενταδάκτυλος, ως φυσικό τείχος προστασίας της πόλης, υπήρξε ο κύριος λόγος της επιλογής αυτής. Η κορυφογραμμή του Πενταδάκτυλου με τα παράξενα σχήματα γέννησε θρύλους και τροφοδότησε ιστορίες που αφηγούνται την παρουσία ηρώων και μορφών που σημάδεψαν την ιστορία του βουνού, του χώρου, του νησιού ολόκληρου. Η βραχώδης κορυφή με τις πέντε μύτες που μοιάζουν με τα δάκτυλα ανθρώπινης παλάμης, ορατή μόνο από τα νότια και τη Λευκωσία, «τραγουδά» το άγγιγμα του ακοίμητου φρουρού των βυζαντινών συνόρων Διγενή Ακρίτα, δικαιολογώντας ετυμολογικά το όνομα της οροσειράς. Είναι γι’ αυτούς τους λόγους που το Λεβέντειο Δημοτικό Μουσείο Λευκωσίας συμπεριέλαβε στο εορταστικό του πρόγραμμα για τα 30 χρόνια λειτουργίας του (1989-2019) έκθεση για τον Πενταδάκτυλο. Η έκθεση με ζωγραφικά έργα, γκραβούρες και φωτογραφικές αποτυπώσεις από τις Συλλογές του Λεβέντειου Δημοτικού Μουσείου, του ιστορικού μουσείου της πρωτεύουσας της Κύπρου, καθώς επίσης από τις Συλλογές της Λεβεντείου Πινακοθήκης, στόχο και σκοπό έχει να καταδείξει τη σημασία της παρουσίας του Πενταδάκτυλου ως την καθημερινή οπτική εμπειρία της Λευκωσίας. Την επιμέλεια της έκθεσης ανέλαβε ο εικαστικός Σάββας Χριστοδουλίδης, ενώ η αρχαιολόγος Λευκή Μιχαηλίδου συνέδραμε την έρευνα με τον εντοπισμό έργων και πληροφοριών για το θέμα. Εκ μέρους του Λεβέντειου Μουσείου, τους ευχαριστώ θερμά. PREFACE

NICOSIA AND THE PENTADAKTYLOS

The Pentadaktylos mountain range is a daily constant in the visual field of Nicosia, an integral part of the cityscape; it defines, demarcates and serves as the city’s horizon.

Throughout time, the presence of the Pentadaktylos has been inseparably linked to the image that residents and foreign visitors alike form of Nicosia.

It is an impassable wall of protection, but also a forbidding screen blocking the view to the north. At the same time, it provokes us to explore what lies beyond. When Nicosia emerged as the Byzantine centre of administration for the island in the 10th century, it was largely because the Pentadaktylos provided a natural wall of defence for the city.

The strangely shaped ridgeline of the Pentadaktylos gave birth to legends and fuelled stories that speak of the heroes and figures that have marked the history of the mountain, the region, the entire island. Visible only from the south and Nicosia, the five-spiked summit, which calls to mind the fingers of a human palm, ‘sings’ of the grip of Digenes Akritas, the vigilant guard of the Byzantine frontiers, and accounts for the name the mountain range bears.

It is for these reasons that the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia included an exhibition on the Pentadaktylos in its commemorative programme for its 30 years of operation (1989-2019). With paintings, engravings and photographs from the collections of the Leventis Municipal Museum, the Cypriot capital’s historical museum, and the collections of the A. G. Leventis Gallery, the exhibition seeks to highlight the presence of the Pentadaktylos in the everyday visual experience of Nicosia.

The exhibition is curated by the visual artist and art historian Savvas Christodoulides, while the archaeologist Lefki Michaelidou supported the research by tracking down sources and information for the needs of the exhibition. On behalf of the Leventis Museum, I express my heartfelt appreciation to both. Special thanks to Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel, Director of the A. G. Όψεις και αναπαραστάσεις μιας οροσειράς. Αναδρομή «Η ρωμιοσύνη πολιορκεί τις γεωμετρίες των οροσειρών μας…» Κύπρος Χρυσάνθης1

Οι απεικονίσεις της οροσειράς κατέχουν επί δεκαετίες κραταιή θέση στη θεματολογία των δημιουργών του τόπου, όπως και ξένων περιηγητών. Τις τοπιογραφίες των πρώτων δεκαετιών του 20ού αιώνα διαδέχονται έως και σήμερα πολλές άλλες. Στις εν λόγω απεικονίσεις, η οροσειρά δεσμεύει τα δευτερογενή ή υστερογενή επίπεδα της σύνθεσης, σφραγίζοντας με άλλα λόγια τον ορίζοντα. Ορίζεται ως φόντο: ως κάτι που οπισθοχώρησε και εδραιώθηκε ως «κατακόρυφο επίπεδο», όπως θα πρέσβευε ο Ντενί Ντιντερό.2 Οι πρώτες απεικονίσεις της οροσειράς τοποθετούνται πριν από το τέλος του 17ου αιώνα. Σε επίσκεψή του στην Κύπρο τo 1683, o τοπιογράφος από τη Χάγη Cornelis de Bruyn σχεδιάζει, εκτός από την πόλη της Αμμοχώστου, απόψεις και μοναστήρια του Πενταδάκτυλου.

To 1745 και πέντε χρόνια αργότερα, ο πρόξενος της Αυτού Μεγαλειότητας στο Χαλέπι Alexander Drummond επισκέπτεται την Κύπρο. Οι εντυπώσεις του καταγράφονται υπό μορφή ημερολογιακών επιστολών και συνοδεύονται από σχέδια. Στις θεματικές του προτιμήσεις περιλαμβάνεται και ο Πενταδάκτυλος. Στο τέλος του 18ου αιώνα συναντούμε σχέδια και γκραβούρες των τοπιογράφων Louis-Francois Cassas και Luigi Mayer. Ακολουθούν οι απεικονίσεις του ισπανικής καταγωγής Ali Bey el Abbassi. Στις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα ο Γερμανός Otto von Richter και μερικές δεκαετίες αργότερα ο Γάλλος Amadée Damour επισκέπτoνται την Κύπρο και προτείνουν τις δικές τους σχεδιαστικές διατυπώσεις. Στα μέσα του αιώνα ο Augustin François Lemaitre στηρίζει τις απεικονίσεις του σε αυτές του Cassas, τις οποίες επαναδιατυπώνει σχεδιαστικά σε μικρότερη κλίμακα. Απεικονίσεις όψεων του Πενταδάκτυλου επιχειρεί επίσης ο αρχιδούκας Ludwig Salvator της Αυστρίας κατά το τέλος του ίδιου αιώνα. Την ίδια περίοδο, με την άφιξη των Βρετανών στην Κύπρο, οι ανταποκριτές των εφημερίδων The Illustrated London News3 και The Graphic εμπλουτίζουν τις εκδόσεις τους με προσωπικές παραστάσεις φυσικών χώρων, μνημείων και απόψεων των πόλεων του νησιού. Πολύ σύντομα φθάνουν στην Κύπρο Ευρωπαίοι ταξιδιώτες, οι οποίοι καταγράφουν τις εντυπώσεις τους και παρεμβάλλουν στα κείμενά τους σχέδια και χαρακτικά. Στη θεματολογία τους δεν παραλείπονται όψεις της Λευκωσίας και του Πενταδάκτυλου.4

Στο σύνολό τους, τα έργα εικονίζουν απόψεις της πρωτεύουσας και την οροσειρά να διαδέχεται ό,τι προτείνεται στο πρώτο πλάνο. Οι συνθέσεις στοιχειοθετούνται στη βάση της επαλληλίας, σύμφωνα με την οποία το εγγύτερο απολαμβάνει ισχυρότερη παρουσία και ευκρίνεια σε σχέση με αυτό που οπισθοχωρεί ή χάνεται στο βάθος. Σπίτια, τζαμιά και φοίνικες απλώνονται στον χώρο αφήνοντας στο πίσω μέρος τμήματα της οροσειράς. Χρωματικές απαλές νύξεις προσδίδουν ενίοτε ειδυλλιακό χαρακτήρα στις ασπρόμαυρες στην πλειονότητά τους συνθέσεις. Ο Πενταδάκτυλος ορίζεται ως φόντο: ως άπνοη, απόμακρη αλλά σχηματικά δοσμένη επιφάνεια που φράζει τον ορίζοντα και καθιστά παράλληλα την πόλη κύριο περιεχόμενο της σύνθεσης. Απαλλαγμένος πολιτικών ή ηθικών αναγωγών όπως θα συμβεί μεταγενέστερα, ο Πενταδάκτυλος αποτελεί στις υπό σχολιασμό απεικονίσεις μόρφωμα ενδεικτικό της φυσιογνωμικής ταυτότητας του βόρειου τμήματος του νησιού. Υποκείμενες σε όρους εξιδανίκευσης και απαλλαγμένες κάθε τύπου εικονικής υπέρβασης ή εννοιολογικού βάρους, οι εν λόγω απεικονίσεις συνιστούν, θα έλεγα, στην πλειοψηφία τους αυτό που ο Gaston Bachelard αποκαλεί «ποιητική συγκρότηση».5 Φωτογραφικές απεικονίσεις της πρωτεύουσας με φόντο την οροσειρά βλέπουν το φως το 1878 από τον Άγγλο επαγγελματία φωτογράφο John Thomson. Την ίδια περίοδο ο Μικρασιάτης και μετέπειτα κάτοικος Λεμεσού Ιωάννης Π. Φώσκολος, ο Αρμένιος Mateos M. Papazian και ο Γερμανός Charles Glaszner επιχειρούν επίσης φωτογραφικές διατυπώσεις του ίδιου τύπου έως και τις πρώτες δεκαετίες του αιώνα που ακολουθεί. Σημαντικές θεωρούνται και οι φωτογραφικές προτάσεις του Κύπριου Θεόδουλου Ν. Τουφεξή, ο οποίος δραστηριοποιείται μέχρι τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’40. Σημαντική θεωρείται και η παρουσία των αρμενικής καταγωγής Haigaz Mangoian, Giragos Zartarian και Vahan Avedissian, οι οποίοι κυρίως κατά την περίοδο 1930-1950 προτείνουν αξιοσημείωτο έργο, όπως και του κυπριακής καταγωγής σύγχρονου Φέλιξ Γιαξή. Λίγο πριν από την Ανεξαρτησία ο Απόστολος Βερβέρης από την Ελλάδα και ο Reno Wideson από την Κύπρο παρουσιάζουν δείγματα δουλειάς ανάλογης θεματικής.6 Η σχέση της πρωτεύουσας με την οροσειρά ορίζεται στη βάση μιας κοινότυπης τοπιογραφικής αρχής που θέλει την οροσειρά να εκδηλώνεται ως έννοια παράλληλα συνώνυμη της υποδοχής και του βάθους. Αυτή αποτελεί και πάλι φόντο. Αφήνοντας κατά μέρος τις εκάστοτε καίριες εκφάνσεις του αστικού χαρακτήρα της πόλης, στις φωτογραφικές απεικονίσεις επισημαίνεται και πάλι η ανυποχώρητη παρουσία του Πενταδάκτυλου. Δηλώνεται ως επιμήκης γαιώδης ζώνη, το επάνω μέρος της οποίας διανθίζεται από αιχμές και βαθουλώματα. Η απουσία χρώματος και η έλλειψη μορφολογικών διασαφηνίσεων στην επιφάνεια της οροσειράς ουδόλως αλλοιώνουν το εύρος της παρουσίας της. Τον ανυποχώρητο χαρακτήρα της οροσειράς και τη βεβαιότητα ότι αυτός συνιστά πάγια, όχι μόνο μορφολογική αλλά και ηθική αξία, επισημαίνει και ο Κώστας Μόντης σε στίχους του 1969: «Αυτή η βουνοσειρά απέναντί μας, / αυτή η βουνοσειρά απ’ τη μιαν άκρη ως την άλλη, / δεν είναι μεταφορική, / είναι σημειωμένη στους χάρτες / όπως όλες οι άλλες».7

Από την αισθητική αρχή των φωτογραφιών μοιάζουν να διέπονται και οι ασπρόμαυρες ή επιχρωματισμένες καρτ ποστάλ που κυκλοφορούν στο νησί στο τέλος του 19ου και κατά τις πρώτες δεκαετίες του 20ού αιώνα. Διακρίνονται για την εκφραστικότητα, κυρίως όμως για την πυκνότητά τους. Την εντύπωση αυτήν οφείλουν στη μικρή κλίμακά τους και συνεπώς στη δυνατότητά τους να επιδέχονται περιεχόμενο υπό όρους συνοχής. Ο Πενταδάκτυλος παραμένει και πάλι το καταληκτικό στοιχείο όψεων της Λευκωσίας, ιδωμένης άνωθεν. Σπίτια, τζαμιά, ναοί, δρόμοι και βλάστηση αποτελούν τις συνιστώσες μιας εικόνας με χαρακτήρα καθαρά ενθυμητικό. Στις εν λόγω «κάρτες χαιρετισμών», όπως συνήθως τις αποκαλούσαν, η οροσειρά υποχωρεί προς όφελος μιας ειδυλλιακής θέασης της πόλης, στο μέτρο που τα μέσα και οι τεχνικές εκτύπωσης της εποχής το εγγυούνται.8 Στον Πενταδάκτυλο στρέφουν ωστόσο το βλέμμα και οι πρωτεργάτες της τέχνης στον τόπο, οι Ιωάννης Κισσονέργης, Αδαμάντιος Διαμαντής και Τηλέμαχος Κάνθος. Στα έργα Παλιά Χώρα (1948) και Κέρφιου (1958) ο Διαμαντής επισφραγίζει τον ορίζοντα των αστικών τοπίων του με τμήμα της οροσειράς.9 Ο χώρος οχυρώνεται, θα έλεγα, ή κλείνει με απολήξεις των βουνοκορφών κρατώντας οτιδήποτε προτάχθηκε –σπίτια, φουγάρα, δέντρα κ.λπ.– παγιδευμένο στα εμπρόσθια επίπεδα και την προοπτική που τα διέπει. Στο πρώτο μισό του 20ού αιώνα τοποθετείται και η Άποψις της Λευκωσίας με τον Πενταδάκτυλο στο Βάθος του Κισσονέργη.10 Πρόκειται για σύνθεση με ειδυλλιακό χαρακτήρα. Ο χώρος οργανώνεται σε ζώνες οριζόντιας διάταξης. Το πρώτο άγονο τμήμα της σύνθεσης διαδέχεται άλλο με πυκνή βλάστηση και σπίτια. Ακολουθεί ο Πενταδάκτυλος. Η οροσειρά μοιάζει υδάτινη και μακρινή συνάμα. Μοιάζει να προμηνύει με το χρώμα της αυτό που αποκρύβει: την πόλη της Κερύνειας και τη θάλασσά της. Τον Πενταδάκτυλο βλέπει κανείς να οριοθετεί όψη της Λευκωσίας και στα Σεμνά Σπιτάκια Προαστίου-Καϊμακλί (1955)11 του Κάνθου. Όπως συμβαίνει και στο έργο του Κισσονέργη, η οροσειρά αποδίδεται με απαλά χρώματα, γεγονός που φανερώνει την πρόθεση του δημιουργού να ελαφρύνει την παρουσία της προσδίδοντάς της χαρακτήρα απόμακρο και συνάμα ονειρικό.12 Οι προαναφερθείσες εικαστικές διατυπώσεις καταδεικνύουν την ακατάλυτη σχέση της πρωτεύουσας με την οροσειρά, σχέση που δεν παύει να συνυφαίνεται για χρόνια ως βεβαιότητα, αλλά στις μέρες μας ως ιδιάζουσα προοπτική. Στα έργα, το φως ανάγεται σε ενοποιητική αξία που επιβεβαιώνει το αδιάρρηκτο και το αδιαίρετο της επίγειας συνθήκης που λέγεται τοπίο. «Πόσο κοντά είμαστε σε αυτό που νομίζαμε πως τόσο απείχε»,13 γράφει ο ποιητής, αφήνοντας να νοηθεί πως η απόσταση είναι συνυφασμένη με τον τρόπο που ορίζουμε το είναι μας απέναντι σε κάτι. Views and Depictions of the Pentadaktylos: A Look Back ‘Greekness lays siege to the geometries of our mountains…’

For decades, images of the Pentadaktylos have held an important place in the subject matter of the country’s artists and foreign travellers. The landscapes executed during the first decades of the 20th century have since been followed by many others. In these works the mountain occupies the secondary or subsequent layers of the composition, thus sealing the horizon. It is set as the background, as something that has retreated and entrenched itself in the ‘vertical plane’, as Denis Diderot would put it.2 The earliest depictions of the mountain range appeared at the end of the 17th century.

During his visit to Cyprus in 1683, Cornelis de Bruyn, a landscape painter from The Hague, made a series of sketches of the town of Famagusta, but also views of the monasteries of the Pentadaktylos.

In 1745, and again five years later, the British consul in Aleppo, Alexander Drummond, visited Cyprus, where he recorded his impressions of the island in the form of journal entries accompanied by sketches. His preferred subject matter included the Pentadaktylos.

At the end of the 18th century we find sketches and engravings by the landscape artists Louis-François Cassas and Luigi Mayer. These were followed by illustrations by Spanishborn Ali Bey el Abbassi.

The German Otto von Richter at the beginning of the 19th century and the Frenchman Amadée Damour several decades later visited Cyprus and provided their own depictions of the mountain range. In the middle of the century Augustin François Lemaître based his illustrations on those of Cassas, which he recast on a smaller scale. At the end of the century Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria presented his own drawings of Pentadaktylos. With the arrival of the British during this period, correspondents from The Illustrated London News3 and The Graphic enriched their reporting with personal illustrations of the natural environment, monuments and cityscapes of the island. Soon after, European travellers arrived in Cyprus and began to record their impressions. In their accounts they included drawings and engravings, among which figured views of Nicosia and the Pentadaktylos.4 Overall, these works depict views of the capital, with the mountain range as a backdrop to what is rendered in the foreground. The compositions adhere to a principle of superposition or succession, whereby closer elements acquire a greater presence, detail and clarity in relation to what retreats or vanishes in the distance. Houses, mosques

and palm trees encompass the space, leaving parts of the mountain to appear in the back. At times, hints of pale colour lend an idyllic note to the mostly black-and-white compositions. The Pentadaktylos is defined as background: as a muted, distant but schematically structured surface that blocks the horizon while establishing the city as the primary subject of the composition. Free from the political and ethical associations that it would later acquire, the Pentadaktylos in these works is an entity representing the physical identity of the northern part of the island. Susceptible to idealisation and devoid of conceptual weight or visual innovation, most of these depictions are, in my view, what Baston Bachelard called ‘poetic constitution’.5 Photographs of the capital with the mountain range in the background first appeared in 1878 with the work of the English professional photographer John Thomson. At the same time, the Asia Minor residents John P. Foscolo and the Armenian Mateos M. Papazian, as well as the German Charles Glaszner, who all later settled in Limassol, produced photographs in a similar vein until the first decades of the following century. The Cypriot photographer Theodoulos N. Toufexis, who was professionally active until the 1940s, produced an important body of work. Significant, too, was the presence of Haigaz Mangoian, Giragos Zartarian and Vahan Avedissian, all of Armenian descent, who produced noteworthy work, largely during the period 1930-1950, as did their Cypriot contemporary, Felix Yiaxis. Shortly before Independence, Apostolos Ververis from Greece and Reno Wideson from Cyprus produced work with similar subject matter.6 The relation between the capital and the mountain is defined on the basis of a prosaic landscape principle, in which the mountain manifests itself as a concept synonymous with depth and receptivity. It is again a background. Whatever way the urban character of the city is portrayed in a particular work, the Pentadaktylos in these photographs remains a defiant, unyielding presence. It is expressed as an elongated band of earth, the top part of which is punctuated by spikes and crevices. The absence of colour and lack of morphological detail on the mountain’s surface in no way lessens the scope of its presence. The unyielding character of the mountain range and the certainty that it constitutes not only a morphological but also an ethical value was pointed out by the poet Kostas Montis in a poem from 1969: ‘This mountain range across from us / this mountain range from one end to another / is not metaphoric / it is marked on the maps / as are all the others.’7 The postcards, both black-and-white and coloured, that circulated on the island at the end of the 19th century and in the early decades of the 20th seem to be governed by the same aesthetic principles as the photographs. They stand out for their expressive power but primarily for their density, an impression due to their small scale and hence their ability to accommodate content on condition of cohesion. The Pentadaktylos once again remains the catalytic element in the depiction of Nicosia as seen from above.

Houses, mosques, churches, roads and vegetation mark the coordinates of an image that is purely commemorative in nature. In these ‘greeting cards’, as they were called, the mountain range recedes in favour of an idyllic view of the city, to the extent allowed by the means and techniques of printing at the time.8

Leading painters in the country, such as Ioannis Kissonerghis, Adamantios Diamantis and Telemachos Kanthos turned their attention, too, to the Pentadaktylos. In his Palia Chora [Old town] (1948) and Curfew (1958), Diamantis sealed the horizon of his cityscapes with a part of the mountain range. The space becomes fortified, I would say, enclosed within the rim described by the peaks of the mountain, keeping whatever was put forward – houses, smokestacks, trees and so on – trapped in the front layers and the perspective that governs them.9 Kissonerghis’ View of Nicosia with the Pentadaktylos in the Background also dates from the mid-century.10 The space in this idyllic composition is organised into horizontal bands. The first section of the composition is barren and is followed by another with dense vegetation and houses. The Pentadaktylos comes next. The mountain range appears aqueous and distant at the same time. With its colour it seems to presage what it conceals: the city of Kyrenia and its sea.

The Pentadaktylos serves to delineate the view of Nicosia in Kanthos’ Humble Houses in the Suburb of Kaimakli (1955) as well.11 As in the work of Kissonerghis, the mountain range is rendered in pale colours, a treatment that reveals the artist’s intent to lighten its presence by endowing it with a distant, dream-like character.12 The above-mentioned body of visual art highlights the enduring link between the capital and the mountain range, a relation that for years continued to be articulated as a certainty but in our time as an exceptional perspective. In these works, the light serves as a unifying value that confirms the indissoluble and indivisible nature of the terrestrial construct that is called landscape. As Montis said, ‘How close we are to what we thought so far away’,13 suggesting how distance is entwined with the way in which we define our being in terms of something else.
