NATIONAL BRIEFS ianni orandi ac after years Italian singer Gianni Morandi, who has just turned 74, returns to Malta after almost 12 years to perform at the Malta Fairs and Convention Centre in Ta’ Qali on April 12. He was here last in the summer of 2007 when he joined fellow Italian heavyweights Claudio Baglioni and Riccardo Cocciante at a concert at the Valletta Waterfront. The show had been compered by TV presenter Fabrizio Frizzi, who died last March aged 60. During the upcoming two-hourlong show, the evergreen singer, whose career has spanned almost six decades, will be interpreting more than 40 tracks, including some of his greatest hits but also new ones. Among them will be Occhi di ragazza, Scende la pioggia, La fisarmonica and Non son degno di te, according to concert promoters Malta Globe Music and Giuseppe Rapisarda Management. When he was young, the singer used to sell drinks and sweets at his local cinema and worked as an assistant in the workshop of his father, a cobbler. His family members enjoyed singing to entertain themselves and it was when his father arranged for him to sing at family festivals sponsored by the Communist Party newspaper L’Unità that he got his first commercial success, receiving 50c for his appearance. The concert at MFCC starts at 9.30pm. For more information visit www.ticketline.com.mt.
