The$burgeoning$craft$brewing$ industry$has$greatly$influenced$the$ increased$demand$for$hops$in$recent$ years.$That$is$because$craft$brewers$ typically$use$a$lot$more$hop$flowers,$ or$cones,$than$commercial$brewers.$ !
“I! intend! to! stay! with! the! four! The! acreage! that! is! devoted! to! hop! plants! in! cultivars! I! started! with,”! she! says.! “But! I’m! states! where! they! have! traditionally! been! grown! —! going! to! plant! a! bit! more! Cascade,! as! it! was! Due! to! the! growing! presence! of! craft! breweries! garden! bed! or! grow! the! hops! in! containers,! in! Georgia,! Compére! was! well9aware! of! the! market! as! Compére! did! over! the! course! of! her! potential!for!the!six!plants!that!she!eventually!ended!up! experiment.! bringing! home! with! her.! She! started! off! her! own! Another!challenge!to!growing!hops!is! experiment! with! Chinook,! Cascade,! Nugget,! and! that! recommended! cultivars! tend! to! be! Willamette!varieties!of!hops.!Compére!says!the!first!two! region9specific.! Although! Georgia! farmers! cultivars! were! especially! successful,! but! all! eventually! have! been! trying! to! determine! how! to! work! flourished!on!her!farm.! around! these! problems,! there! is! still! not! 6! !
much! information! available! on! which! cultivars! are! especially!productive!in!the!South,!Brophy!says.!She! advises! growers! to! begin! with! a! few! specimens! in! the! backyard! to! find! out! what! works! best! to! grow! hops!successfully.! A! strong! trellis! system! is! crucial! to! that! success.! Though! most! commercial! hop! farmers! use! larger!structures,!there!is!a!different!type!of!growing! system!that!was!developed!in!England!which!allows! the! plants! to! be! grown! on! small! trellises.! Compére! used! the! latter! method! to! great! effect! in! her! own! garden!by!reinforcing!her!four9foot!fence!to!be!sure! it!would!withstand!the!combined!weight!of!her!hop! plants.! The! vining! plants! can! get! large! quickly! and! can!easily!take!over!far!more!space!than!intended!to! fill,!as!Compére!found.! “By!the!end!of!the!season,!they!had!covered! the!southwest!fence.!The!entire!southwest!fence,!all! 112! feet! of! it.! Pretty! impressive! for! six! little! starts! planted!in!June,”!she!says.! Hops!can!be!a!labor9intensive!and!somewhat! costly! crop! to! produce.! The! cones! are! harvested! by! hand! and! require! constant! vigilance! to! ensure! they’re!ripe,!Brophy!says.! “The! trick! is! to! line! up! three! of! your! senses:! smell,! sight! and! touch,”! Compére! says.! “The! cones! …! should,! of! course,! smell! like! hops.! They! should! look! yellowish! or! at! least! light! green,! and! very! thin,! slightly! separated! with! a! touch! of! dusty,! yellow! lupulin! at! the! stem! end.! They! should!feel!dry!and!paper9like.”! Lupulin! is! a! powder! containing! essential! oils! and! chemicals,! which! are! what! most! brewers! focus! on! when! choosing! which! hop! to! use! in! their! beer,! according! to! the! Craft! Beer! Academy!website.! Because! hops! are! perennial,! they! require! year9 round!care.!It!can!take!up!to!three! years!before!a!hop!crop!becomes! financially! viable,! so! Brophy! says! !

farmers!should!investigate!all!costs!involved! and! ensure! they! have! brewers! to! sell! to! before! planting.! Otherwise,! they! could! find! themselves!buried!in!debt!and!unruly!vines.! She! adds! that! learning! about! what! types!of!hops!are!available!to!the!home!and! craft!brewers!will!help!farmers!decide!which! cultivars! to! plant.! Bitter! hops! are! selected! for! their! acidic! content! rather! than! their! aromas,! and! aromatic! cultivars! for! their! strong! scent! and! low! acidity.! Dual9purpose! hops!also!exist.!! Yet! despite! the! challenges,! the! rewards! of! a! successful! hop! harvest! cannot! be!denied.!! “I! believe! that! with! drip! irrigation,! proper!trellising,!good!soil!prep,!and!a!bit!of! PR,!this!can!turn!into!a!great!cash!crop!and!I! encourage! others! to! give! it! a! try.! I! plan! to! get! creative! with! the! trellising! to! keep! my! cost! down,”! Compére! says.! “I! think! our! climate! is! great! for! hops! and! I’m! excited! about! the! prospects.! I! already! have! buyers! lined!up!for!all!that!I!can!grow.”!! !

ou!may!not!realize!it!from!first!glance,!but!new!National!
FFA!Vice!President!Abbey!Gretsch!is!a!first9generation!FFA!member.! The! University! of! Georgia! sophomore! was! raised! with! an! agricultural!background!—!her!parents!own!Gretsch!Brothers!Angus! in! Lexington,! raised! pigs! and! chickens! and! both! graduated! from! UGA’s!College!of!Agricultural!and!Environmental!Sciences!—!but!it! wasn’t!until!middle!school!when!she!began!to!seriously!think!about! starting!a!career!in!agriculture.! At! the! time,! joining! the! organization! formerly! known! as! Future! Farmers! of! America! was! an! activity! that! meant! spending! time!with!her!dad!and!being!outside.!So!though!she!was!an!integral! part!in!getting!the!state’s!first!private!school!FFA!charter!at!Athens! Christian!School,!she!didn’t!have!a!clue!what!it!really!was!—!yet.! “I!just!thought!it!was!another!way!for!me!to!show!cows,”! she!says.!“It!turned!out!to!be!that!and!a!lot!more.”! FFA! promotes! leadership,! personal! growth! and! career! success,!says!Laura!Beth!Willman,!FFA!adviser!at!ACS.!Its!members! participate! in! an! outside9the9classroom! year9long! program! —! the! Supervised! Agricultural! Experience,! or! SAE! —! and! have! the! opportunity!to!compete!in!Career!Development!Events.! It!was!in!doing!CDEs!that!something!about!FFA!clicked.! Gretsch! participated! in! a! livestock! judging! CDE,! during! which!she!had!to!present!an!impromptu!speech.! “I! was! extremely! nervous.! I! was! shaking! in! my! boots;! I! thought!I!was!going!to!have!to!read!off!the!reasons.!…!I!did!not!do! well.! I! was! in! like,! the! bottom! fourth! of! the! scoring! and! I! was! so! embarrassed.! But! I! really! actually! enjoyed! the! competition,”! Gretsch! says.! “After! that! first! adrenaline! rush! of! doing! a! CDE! …! I! was! kind! of! hooked.! I! was! like,! ‘Wow.! I! like! that! feeling.’! Even! though!it!scared!me!to!death!I!kind!of!wanted!to!do!it!again.”! She!went!on!to!place!third!in!her!first!FFA!public!speaking! competition,!then!started!attending!chapter!officer!training.! “I! got! to! see! the! state! officers! for! the! first! time.! State! officers! were! such! a! big! deal,”! Gretsch! says.! “I! began! to! really! understand!what!this!whole!leadership,!what!growth,!meant;!what! success!was!going!to!accomplish.”! Former!state!and!national!officers!became!immediate!role! models!for!Gretsch.!One!of!them!was!Cain!Thurmond!of!Jefferson,! who!was!elected!in!2011!to!a!national!vice!president!position.! Thurmond,!who!now!lives!in!Napierville,!Illinois,!has!known! Abbey! since! she! was! in! elementary! school,! and! followed! her! journey!from!FFA!member!to!state!officer!to!national!office.! “I’ve! always! been! super! impressed! with! Abbey! and! hopefully! pushed! her! to! be! the! best! she! can! be,”! he! says.! “She! reached! out! to! me! after! [her! state! officer! year].! I! told! her! to! pray! about!it!and!after!a!while!of!praying!about!it,!if!she!still!felt!led!to!

! run!for!national!office,!to!take!it!by!the! horns!and!run.”! Each! state! is! limited! to! one! national! officer! candidate! each! year.! Gretsch! is! the! fourth! Georgia! national! officer!in!five!years,!Thurmond!says.!She! follows! him,! Kalie! Hall! and! Andy! Paul,! who! retired! from! his! national! presidency!this!year.! “I! guess! the! official! title! of! what! Abbey! and! her! teammates! are! going!to!do,!is!they!are!a!voice!for!over! 600,000!FFA!members,”!Thurmond!says.! “Abbey! has! been! given! a! huge! task! I! know! she’ll! conquer! very! well.! Many! students! in! many! places! will! be! looking! up!to!her.”! The! Gretsch! family! feels! it’s! been! a! neat! journey! to! watch! their! daughter!and!sister!grow!in!agriculture.! “Abbey’s!been!very!committed! to! this! process,”! her! father,! Fred! Gretsch,!says.!“She!spent!a!lot!of!time!in! prayer!and!asked!us!to!pray!about!it.!It’s! been! a! very! spirit9filled! process! for! her! and!for!us.”! Her! brothers! watched! Abbey’s! FFA! leadership! process! from! afar,! and! say! it’s! hard! to! believe! their! sister! has! grown!up.! “I! didn’t! really! realize! how! big! it! was! until! she! asked! me! to! give! the! one9minute!introductory!speech!for!her! retiring! address! at! state,”! says! Will! Gretsch,!her!oldest!brother.!“When!I!got! up! there! and! saw! how! many! people! I! was! speaking! in! front! of! and! my! legs!
started! shaking! uncontrollably,! I! was! like,! ‘That’s! a! lot! of! people.’! Then! to! watch! her! get! up! and! rock! that! speech,! that’s!impressive.”! This! year’s! ACS! FFA! members! are!impressed!as!well!with!their!alumna.!! “It! put! some! of! them! into! perspective!that!they!could!be!filling!her! shoes! one! day! in! that! same! role,”! Willman! says.! “I! don’t! think! some! of! them! realize! the! tremendous! accomplishment! of! it.! They! think! agriculture!is!just!farming,!so!they!don’t! really!see!it!as!a!leadership9type!position! and!role.”! Abbey!joins!a!lengthy!list!of!American! dignitaries!who!started!their!leadership! careers!in!FFA,!including!Kansas!Gov.! Sam!Brownback,!former!US!President! Jimmy!Carter!and!Georgia!Gov.!Nathan! Deal,!Thurmond!says.! The! next! 365! days! of! Abbey’s! life! will! be! jam9packed,! Thurmond! says.! Her! national! officer! year! will! include! a! trip! to! Japan,! speaking! engagements! at! FFA! chapters! and! state! conventions! across! the! country,! networking! events! with! agribusinesses! and! sponsors,! plus! plenty! of! practice! writing! and! giving! impromptu!speeches!and!workshops!for! state!and!chapter!officers.! She!took!the!next!year!off!from! school! to! complete! her! national! officer! duties,! but! plans! to! come! back! to! UGA! with! a! renewed! perspective! on! her! career!goals.! Abbey! attended! a! semester! at!
Abraham!Baldwin!Agricultural!College!in! Tifton,! and! then! transferred! to! UGA! in! Athens.! She! is! a! double! major! in! agricultural! communication! and! agricultural!education.! “My! main! mission! is,! whether! serving! in! Ag! in! the! Classroom! or! developing!my!own!type!of!company,!is! making! a! link! between! education! and! communication! in! an! adult! setting,! so! that! adults! are! able! to! be! consumer9 educated,”!she!says.! During!this!year,!Abbey!plans!to! impact!students!and!tell!their!stories!—! not! a! task! to! be! understated,! as! FFA! encompasses! a! diverse! membership.! Its! members!live!in!some!of!the!most!rural! areas! of! the! country! and! some! of! America’s! biggest! cities.! FFA! members! are! black,! white,! Hispanic! and! all! in9 between.! It’s! nearly! equal! in! male9to9 female!ratio.!And,!through!agriculture,!it! teaches!middle!and!high!school!students! about! being! driven! and! being! servant! leaders,!Abbey!says.!!! There’s! no! doubt! it’ll! be! a! challenging! year,! Thurmond! says.! But! he,!the!Gretsch!family!and!Georgia’s!FFA! members,! also! have! no! doubt! that! Abbey!will!live!up!to!it.! “She’s!going!to!do!a!wonderful! job! this! year! and! she’s! going! to! make! a! wonderful!impact!that!she’s!never!going! to! be! able! to! see! the! full! extent! of,”! Each!year,!seed!companies!mail!out!hundreds!of! thousands!of!catalogs!to!customers!across!the!US.! Holloway! enjoys! shopping! more! niche! varieties! and! says! catalogs! offering! heirlooms! and! hybrids! have! “more! options! to! geek! out! about.”! The! Hollways! grew! loofah,! tiny! pumpkins! and! more! from! seeds! purchased! out!of!catalogs.! “I! probably! have! a! list! of! 40! different! plants! and! then! [my! husband’s]! like,! ‘Babe.! Glenwood,! jokingly! says! to! “throw! them!away!and!buy!new!ones!next!year.”!Yet!with!a! little! discipline! and! a! tad! of! green! thumb,! it’s! possible! to! plant! and! care! for! these! flora! all! year! long!until!they!bloom!again.! “They!can!be!grown!and!kept!anywhere!just! as! long! as! you! protect! it! from! freezing,”! Windham! says.!“If!people!want!to!keep!them!as!a!foliage!plant,! you!can!keep!it!indefinitely.”! In!their!natural!Mexico,!poinsettias!grow!into! small! trees! with! woody! stems.! They! can! withstand! cool!temperatures,!but!not!freezing,!so!they!are!best! raised! like! a! tropical! houseplant,! says! University! of! He! recommends! potting! poinsettias! on! top! of! a! wheeled!cart!to!make!this!daily!transfer!easier.! “This! triggers! the! plant! to! think! it’s! becoming!wintertime!faster!than!it!normally!is,”! he!says.!“If!there’s!light,!it!will!never!bloom.”! What! often! gets! mistaken! for! the! “bloom”!on!a!poinsettia!is!not!a!flower!at!all.! Brewpubs!did,!however,!get!language!changed!in! their!favor!to!allow!them!to!sell!a!small!number!of!kegs,! bottles!and!cans!to!the!wholesale!tier.! But! several! months! after! SB63! passed,! the! Department!of!Revenue!issued!a!bulletin:!“Brewers!and! Distillers!are!permitted!to!charge!varying!fees!for!tours,! but!may!not!vary!tour!prices!in!such!a!way!that!the!tour! prices!are!clearly!and!directly!tied!to!the!market!value!of! the!alcohol!furnished.”! Swain! is! not! only! a! painter.! He’s! also! known! for! building! scale! models! of! buildings,! including! an! abandoned! schoolhouse! replete!with!dirt!dobbler!nests,!tiny!mice!and!disheveled!antiquities,! left!when!the!teacher!and!class!closed!the!door!for!the!last!time.!His! latest! piece! is! a! smokehouse! that! features! handmade! miniature! sausages! hanging! from! the! ceiling! and! hams! curing! on! the! shelf.! Sometimes! he! combines! his! two! talents! and! accents! his! paintings! with! a! three9dimensional! adornment:! real! tin! on! the! roof! of! a! painted! farmhouse,! or! chicken! wire! spread! across! a! hen! and! rooster,!as!if!the!viewer!is!looking!inside!the!coop.! Modeling!came!to!Swain!at!a!young!age,!when!he!went!to!a! store!with!his!mother!and!spied!a!truck!he!wanted.! “She! couldn’t! afford! to! buy! it! at! the! time,”! Swain! says.! “Something! popped! in! my! head! and! it! said,! ‘Go! get! you! some! cardboard!and!make!it!up!in!cardboard.’”! So!he!did.!His!model!truck!was!painted,!had!moving!wheels! and! he! says! people! could! hardly! tell! it! was! cardboard.! Now,! he! collects!the!model!vehicles!he!wanted!long!ago,!and!uses!his!model! skills!for!buildings.! “I! was! doing! a! lot! of! old! farm! scenes! and! people! that! saw! some! of! my! work! said,! ‘I! want! you! to! paint! my! house.’! And! I! kept! painting!peoples’!houses,!barns,!farmhouses,”!he!says.!“I!really!liked! doing!that,!but!I!always!did!farm!scenes.”! Muzyka!grew!up!in!a!rural!area!as!well,!so!the!theme!of!ARA! constantly!reminds!him!of!agricultural!dreams!past.! “A! lot! of! times! I! would! drive! by! these! crumbling! farmhouses,! a! lot! of! them! were! quite! stately! at! one! time,! and! I! wanted! to! know! who! lived! there,”! he! says.! “I! go! back! and! see! the! farm!that!was!so!vibrant!that!is!now!abandoned!and!deteriorating.! It!makes!you!wonder,!why!did!all!this!happen?”! Muzyka!learned!a!lot!of!things!can!happen!—!kids!go!off!to! college!and!don’t!want!to!come!back!to!the!farm,!or!farms!are!sold! for!development.! “I! thought! somebody! ought! to! pay! homage! to! that,”! he! says.! “To! pay! homage! to! the! small! family! farmer,! the! people! that! struggled! their! whole! lives! to! feed! their! communities! and! beyond,! and! to! pay! respect! to! them.! And! also! to! memorialize! the! imagery! that!is!being!lost!from!or!rural!landscape.”! Swain!says!he!wants!to!make!sure!today’s!kids!understand!a! little!bit!of!rural!history!through!ARA’s!work.! “It’s! so! important! now! because! it’s! all! vanishing! away,”! Swain! says.! “That’s! why! we! put! these! shows! on;! abandoned! rural! churches!and!barns!or!whatever!the!case!may!be.!Let!the!kids!know! what!used!to!be,!a!long!time!ago.”! Artists! are! able! to! put! their! work! out! on! display! and! share! their!talent!with!the!world,!Muzyka!says.!! “But!in!something!like!Abandoned!Rural!America,!you!don’t! have! pretty! or! interesting! pictures.! Ebenezer! has! been! on! that! corner! since!1922,”!Smith!says.!“Dr.!King’s!grandfather!was!a! pastor!of!Ebenezer!from!1894!to!1931.!Then!his!father! was! pastor! from! 1931! to! 1975.! Dr.! King! was! basically! raised!and!born!inside!of!Ebenezer!Baptist!Church.”! Inside! the! church! today,! visitors! can! spend! a! few! minutes!listening!to!King!preach.! Tatjana! Lopez,! who! visited! from! Colorado! Springs,! Colorado,! in! December,! recorded! King’s! sermon!to!share.! “I!sent!it!to!the!kids!and!said,!‘Listen.!Listen!to! what!he’s!preaching,’”!she!says.!“You!go!in!there!and! they!have!him!preaching,!and!you!don’t!see!him,!but! it’s!like!he’s!there.”! Inside! King’s! childhood! home,! visitors! are! exposed! to! the! foundation! laid! by! his! mother! and! father,! known! to! many! in! the! historic! Sweet! Auburn! community!as!“Mama!King”!and!“Daddy!King.”! “Everybody! knows! Dr.! King! is! a! great! Civil! Rights! leader! …! but! nobody! knows! the! person! who! was! developing! to! become! that! leader! of! the! movement! and! how! he! was! developed! inside! that! house,!and!how!that!family!structure!molded!him!into! becoming! the! individual! he! became! later! in! life,”! India! in! order! to! try! to! do! nonviolent! marches!here,”!Smith!says.!“It!is!very!important! that!we!have!that!statue.”! Visiting!here!is!a!“pilgrimage”!for!many.! “If! you! come! to! Atlanta,! you! have! to! come! to! the! historical! resting! place! of! Martin! Luther! King! and! where! he! was,! where! he! preached,”!Lopez!says.!! Her!traveling!companion,!Fallon!Newland! of! San! Diego,! California,! was! visiting! for! the! second!time.! “Me,! being! a! Christian! as! well,! has! a! lot! to! do! with! spreading! the! faith! and! that’s! the! biggest!reason!I!would!love!people!to!come,”!she! says.!“He!was!just!a!great!man!in!general,!being! a!
