Dr. Lee Jones, an Extension veterinarian at the University of Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in Tifton, says it is recommended for livestock to receive colostrum, or “first milk,” within 12 to 24 hours of birth. The colostrum acts as the young animal’s immune system for its first 30 days of life until its own immune system, he says.

Beef cattle graze at the Georgia Mountain Research & Education Center in Blairsville. According to Dr. Lee Jones, Extension veterinarian at the University of Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in Tifton, one of the most important things farmers can do is observe their animals daily to familiarize themselves with normal behavior, so it is easier to identify odd behavior that could signify disease or injury.
