fairway."Each"area"has"specific"grasses"that"work"well"for"it." At"East"Lake"Golf"Club"in"Atlanta,"fairways"are"Meyer" zoysia," which" is" known" as" ZJ52" or" by" its" scientific" name" of" Zoysia+ japonica." Roughs" and" most" tees" are" Tifway" bermudagrass," says" golf" course" Superintendent" Ralph" Kepple." Chartered" in" 1904," East" Lake" is" the" capital’s" oldest" golf"course." “We" host" the" [Professional" Golfers’" Association" of" America]" tour" championship" by" CocaJCola" every" year" in" September." That’s" basically" the" season" finale." It’s" also" the"
program," there’s" a" good" chance" Tiger" Woods" would" be" putting" off"sand"on"the"fairway,"not"just"in"a"sand"trap." “If"you"go"back"to"the"‘40s"and"‘50s"there"were"a"lot"of" sand"putting"greens,”"says"Brian"Schwartz,"assistant"professor"in" the" University" of" GeorgiaJTifton’s" Crop" and" Soil" Sciences" Department." “They" didn’t" have" a" lot" of" grasses" that" grew" on" greens." People" either" had" sand" greens" or" shaggy" greens" that" were"barely"greens"at"all.”" In"the"1930s,"the"US"Department"of" Agriculture" hired" Georgia" forage" breeder" Glen" Burton" to" develop" grasses" for" ranchers" and" farmers:" food" for" their" livestock" to" eat." As" a" side" project," Burton" bred" grasses" that" were" doing" better" and" better" for" lawns" and" sports"fields,"Schwartz"says." “As"far"back"as"the"‘40s"and"‘50s"he" was"breeding"turfgrasses"before"anyone"else" in" the" South." Some" of" the" most" widely" used" grasses" today" came" out" –" Tifway" and" Tifdwarf,”"Schwartz"says." He" selected" Meyer" zoysia" because" it’s" a" “phenomenal”" playing" surface." “The"zoysiagrass"in"general,"from" what" I’ve" experienced," doesn’t" make" good" rough" because" the" ball" just" sits" on" top" of" it,”" he" says." “If" you" miss" the" fairway,"you"should"have"a"more"difficult" line" than" if" you’re" in" the" fairway," so" we" put"bermudagrass"rough"in.”" Most" grasses" would" die" in" the" conditions" required" for" golf" greens," Schwartz"says."To"keep"the"greens"low"—" as"close"to"the"sand"greens"of"decades"of" old"—"requires"specially"bred"varieties." “Golf" greens" are" totally" kind" of" separate." When" you" think" about" a" golf" green,"the"grass"is"mowed"super"low."Dr." Burton" developed" one" called" Tifdwarf" and"it"was"a"major"grass"for"20"years."Dr." Hanna" developed" one," TifEagle," that" is" still"the"primary"grass"used"on"golf"greens" in" the" South" right" now,”" Schwartz" says." “The" greens" are" actually" mowed" at" less" than"a"tenth"of"an"inch."Very"few"grasses" can"actually"survive"that.”" Kepple" does" use" an" ultraJdwarf" type"on"the"greens"at"East"Lake."They"get" the"most"care"and"maintenance."To"keep"

the"golf"course"pristine"and"free"of"weeds,"Kepple"says"his"team" applies" a" preJemergent" herbicide" in" the" spring" and" fall" to" discourage" weeds" from" growing" before" they’ve" sprouted." Because" the" selected" turfgrasses" in" the" greens" are" so" dense," they" are" less" likely" to" harbor" weeds" than" other" areas" of" the" course." East"Lake"Golf"Club"is"also"maintained"by"daily"mowing" —"and"twice"daily"during"the"tournament."Kepple"says"his"team" also"utilizes"a"fungicide"twice"in"the"fall"to"prevent"zoysia"patch," a"disease"that"infects"and"browns"large"areas"of"the"grass."" “A"rounded"patch"will"start"turning"brown."It"will"have" a" reddishJbrown" ring" around" it." That’s" where" the" disease" is" actively" growing" and" spreading,”" he" says." “If" you" were" to" pull" on"those"leaves"that"are"turning"brown,"they’ll"pull"right"out"of" the"plant.”" The" golf" club" is" named" for" its" 28Jacre" lake," which" is" where"most"of"the"irrigation"comes"from,"Kepple"says."Greens" are" watered" every" three" days" and" the" fairways" are" watered" a" bit"more"frequently"depending"on"drought"conditions."He"says" the" Meyer" zoysia" requires" light" irrigation" because" it" doesn’t" breathe"well"in"the"area’s"soil." Being" in" touch" with" golf" courses" and" homeowners" is" vital"to"ensure"that"scientists"develop"grasses"that"fit"the"needs" of"their"customers." “If"you’re"not"out"there"meeting"people"or"talking"with" them" in" some" way," you" could" waste" your" time" working" on" something" that’s" not" really" all" that" important,”" Schwartz" says." “We" have" an" annual" turfgrass" conference" and" I" always" take" questions"and"notes"of"what"we"should"be"working"on.”" Ideas" for" future" grasses" include" increased" droughtJ tolerance," slowJgrowing" grasses" that" require" less" mowing," fungusJresistant" varieties" and" coldJtolerant" ones," Schwartz" says." Another" thing" to" remember" is" that" UGA" turfgrass" breeders" have" a" worldwide" clientele:" they’re" simultaneously" breeding"for"Georgia"lawns"and"South"American"soccer"fields." The" UGA" scientists" use" traditional" breeding" methods" to" develop" new" grasses." Schwartz" says" they" take" pollen" from" one" plant" with" a" desired" characteristic" and" combine" with"
another"plant"with"additional"qualities"they"like."" “Maybe" that" parent" is" droughtJtolerant" or" really" dark" green"[and"the"other]"is"real"dwarfJy"or"very"cold"tolerant,”"he" says." “When" we" make" those" hybrids" we" typically" make" thousands" and" thousands" every" year" because" it’s" kind" of" like" looking" for" a" needle" in" the" haystack." We’re" looking" for" the" hybrid"that"has"all"the"positive"traits."Most"fail,"but"by"growing" out" and" making" as" many" hybrids" as" we" can," and" thousands" of" plants" later" and" lots" of" years" of" testing," hopefully" we’ll" find" those"hybrids"that"are"better"than"the"parents.”" Kepple" says" one" of" the" main" directions" the" golf" industry"looks"to"is"for"grasses"that"require"less"watering." “I"know"that"a"recent"survey"showed"that"golf"courses" reduced"their"water"usage"by"over"20"percent"over"the"last"five" years,”" he" says." “We’re" trying" to" reduce" our" usage" and" the" researchers" are" trying" to" produce" plants" that" don’t" require" as" much"water.”" One" of" those" is" TifTuf" bermudagrass," a" recent" grass" developed" by" the" University" of" Georgia." Kepple" plans" to" experiment"with"it"in"shadier"areas"of"the"East"Lake"course,"and" says" if" he" was" to" redo" his" course" right" now," he’d" “look" very" hard”"at"TifTuf"for"inclusion." It"took"22"years"for"TifTuf"to"be"released"for"sale,"but" other"grasses"take"anywhere"from"seven"to"12"years"of"testing" before"the"perfect"hybrid"is"found,"Schwartz"says." TifTuf"is"going"to"be"a"gameJchanger,"he"says." “It"is"38"percent"more"droughtJtolerant"than"Tifway."In" a"town"like"Atlanta"if"you"could"save"38"percent"of"water,"you’d" make" a" huge" impact" on" the" water" available" for" other" things,”" he" says." “We" worked" on" it" for" years" and" years" …" so" in" all" this" further"testing,"we"found"it’s"actually"more"shade"tolerant"than" any"bermudagrass"in"the"past.”" For"example,"Kepple"had"a"tee"box"that"kept"dying"in" the" spring" because" of" its" shade," Schwartz" says." Stores" across" the" country" started" restocking" Blue" Bell" in" August," but" it" was" 2016" before" most" Georgia" stores" got" the" ice" cream" back" on" shelves." The" painting" came" out" and" it’s" just" been" one" of" the" most" successful" paintings" I’ve" ever" done" as" far" as" capturing" the" otherworldliness" of" Augusta,”" she" says." “Everything"glows"because"they’re"overseeding"and"that"rich,"rich" fertilized"grass"has"sort"of"a"bluish"glow"to"it.”" Plus" all" the" flowers" were" in" bloom" at" the" same" time," something"that"almost"never"happens." The" history" behind" Fruitland" Augusta’s" Georgia" peach" and" peach" tea" vodkas" goes" back" more" than" 150" years," even" though" the" company"itself"is"barely"2"years"old." “When" you" hear" ‘Georgia’" of" course" you" hear" ‘peaches,’”" Fruitland" Augusta" Director" Yuri" Kato" says." “We" really" did" a" lot" of" legwork" and" spent" hours" and" libraries" and" going" through" documents" and" then" that" landed" us" in" Augusta." I" started" to" learn" about" Mr." Berckmans.”" By" “Mr." Berckmans,”" Kato" means" Prosper" J.A." Berckmans," a" Belgian" horticulturalist" who" came" to" Augusta" in" the" 1850s" to" open" a" nursery" with" his" father." Kato" says" it" took" about" four" years" to" fully" research"the"family,"as"much"of"the"nursery’s"records"and"history"are" related"to"the"exclusive"membership"club"that"now"occupies"the"farm" site:"the"Augusta"National,"home"of"the"Masters"Tournament." That" being" said," fashion" rules" still" apply," says" amateur" golfer" Parker" Gordon," a" software"engineer"from"Savannah." “There’s" like" an" implied" dress" code," I" think," when" you" go" there,”" Gordon" says." “You" can" get" pretty" extravagant.”" Gordon" played" golf" in" high" school" and" college," and" has" played"in"a"number"of"amateur"tournaments." “There’s" a" common" saying" that" a" goodJlooking" golfer"is"a"good"golfer,”"Gordon"says."“With"golf,"the"owner" of"the"course"wants"to"portray"the"course"as"nice."They"want" the"elites"to"play"there."To"do"that"you"kind"of"can"separate" yourself"by"your"dress.”" There" are" many" fashion" considerations" for" both" men"and"women"who"attend"the"Masters." Atlanta"native"Jenn"Harris"owns"High"Heel"Golfer"in"San" Diego,"California,"a"company"that"teaches"women"the"game"and" how" it" can" benefit" their" networking" skills." She" says" the" golfers’" wives"are"often"the"bestJdressed"at"the"Masters." “They"wear"a"lot"of"athletic"gear,"but"I"say"wear"a"spring" dress" or" summer" dress," or" skort" with" collard" shirt" or" tank" top,”" Harris"says."“You’ve"got"to"be"a"little"bit"more"conservative.”" Even" though" her" business" is" called" High" Heel" Golfer," Harris" says" heels" are" not" the" right" shoe" for" the" course." She"says"for"women,"acceptable"attire"at"the"Masters"is" “country"club"wear.”" “You"can"wear"…"your"traditional"golf"skirt"that’s"just"as" long" as" your" fingertips" so" you’re" not" prancing" around" and" showing" what" people" aren’t" supposed" to" see," and" on" top" you" could" wear" a" tank" top," but" not" something" where" you’re" really" spilling"out,”"Harris"says." Atlanta" resident" Margaret" Hollis" is" no" stranger" to" the" Masters."
