Pro Tips from Sherri Renée:

Using Gray For Creating Color Effects

This method is only advised on virgin or slightly processed European gray. There are four types of gray available, five if you include yak, which we don’t use.

Synthetic Gray

This method will not work, as you cannot cover gray with a professional color.

Processed Indian or Chinese hair

Starting from a level 2 or 3, hair is highly processed to achieve gray. Hair is given an acid bath, which strips 99% of the color and leaves some unpleasant tones. Hair is toned using factory fabric dye, usually with a violet base. This process is harsh on hair and compromises the coloring process. Over processed hair is innately too porous with the cuticle open, which leaves additional colorwork unpredictable. Hair color may be uneven, too dark, or even furtherdamage the hair.

European Lightly Processed.

Starting from a level 9 or 10 on virgin European hair, hair is gently lifted a level or two up and then toned using an ash violet base. If using this type of hair, please note to use gentle professional color and watch closely as the cuticle is thin. Excessive bleaching is not advised.

Virgin Hand-picked Gray

This is the best gray to use because hair is healthy, intact, and can be used as a white canvas to create almost any color effect. Due to the cuticle being intact and slightly resistant, it may be necessary to “fill” the hair with a neutral first, then tone either warm or cool depending on the desired effect. Think in terms of layering color on as opposed to trying to get the color where you want in the first pass.

Erica Gamble The Wig Dr., Marietta GA I had a passion for wigs at an early age. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and always witnessing Grandmother “Bessie,” Aunt “Bea,” and mother “Rosa” snatched up in fashion and powerful wigs that I call “hair hats” lead to the Wig Dr’s. creation. Hair is an accessory and I believe it is important for a woman to look and feel her best each day. It all starts with prayer and “good hair.” Having an earned doctorate in Organizational Behavior and Leadership coupled with more than 20 years of leadership and higher education success brought me to my passion. I am currently studying trichology and adding it to my practice. This will be life-changing. I will soon hold a Doctor of Health Sciences with a concentration in trichology.
