Scalp Care It’s More Than Skin Deep
By Martina Candido, Biologist, Research and Development, Cesare Ragazzi Laboratories
What if we told you that taking care of the scalp is the first step to having shiny and healthy hair?
It’s all about the basics.
It is known that the beauty industry has always focused on the skin – skin from the face to the toes and all the skin in between. The beauty industry has created serums and creams that are meant to be applied each morning to the face and body. But now the part of the body within the skin care spotlight is one that has, until now, escaped our attention – the scalp.
First, let’s debunk an error that a lot of us make: The scalp is skin, not hair.
Put simply, the scalp is a quiet ecosystem that works tirelessly to stimulate hair growth and regulate sebum production. But when was the last time you paid attention to your scalp care, beyond a hasty and distracted massage during your daily shampoo routine?
Today, with pollution on the increase and the increase in skin problems like psoriasis and eczema, the health of the scalp is more disrupted than ever. In short, it’s time to transfer the attention you give to your face also to your scalp.
People are beginning to make the connection between scalp and hair health.

Dirt, pollution, dead skin, and sebum can easily build up, making hair dull over time. Additionally, the build-up of products like dry shampoos and conditioners, along with sweat can slow hair growth.
It is the same concept behind clogged pores on the face from heavy makeup and creams, blackhead generators, and several other problems that come to the surface. As a biologist specializing trichological science I recommend a daily cleansing of the scalp to keep it free from irritants.
So, what products should we place on the list for thorough scalp care? Masks, exfoliants, and specific vials and lotions are created to counteract various problems, from oiliness to dandruff. The newest generation of scalp care products specifically for this area contain, in fact, equivalent ingredients to those for skin care.
Many serums stimulate blood flow and increase circulation within the scalp, which accelerates hair growth. Like facial serums, scalp serums also deliver nutrients onto the follicles that enhance shine and strengthen damaged hair. So, if you’re fighting a battle with hair loss or simply want to increase physiological growth, going to the base of the matter with the assistance of scalp products may be a tactic.
Beauty and health often go hand in hand, and the health of the hair is directly linked to scalp health. We can’t have beautiful hair if we don’t have a healthy scalp.
Itching, redness and flaking are avoidable with a few simple actions, including paying attention to the products you use.
Here are a few suggestions that may help.
▶ Mild, fragrance-free shampoos can help with scalp redness.
▶ Shampoo with moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties can help scalp desquamation. If this isn’t enough, a dermatologist should be consulted.
▶ For excess sebum, or oily scalp, don’t use aggressive anti-oil shampoos. Astringent and purifying products can aid in the balancing of the scalp.
Before taking any action, consult a specialist to verify any condition you may have and to consider the overall health of your scalp. It may be enough to restore the scalp’s equilibrium.
