from The Link Issue 46

▶ Developing goals. A mentor will help you focus on one or two things. No one can be an expert in everything so it’s important to narrow your focus or one or two goals.
▶ Developing a plan to reach your goals. Here, your mentor can help you achieve your goals by creating a specific, step-bystep plan.
▶ Asking the right questions. Do you want to work less and make more money? Do you want to add another location? Do you want to focus on hair replacement and not mainstream hair? Your mentor can help you wade through these weighty questions and come up with a strategy right for you.
▶ Refining your consultation. A mentor can help you be a more effective listener during your consultation and make suggestions for improvement. A mentor can demonstrate a consultation or even join in one of yours.
▶ Redesigning your studio. Your mentor can help you look at your studio from a client’s perspective and identify ways to make the experience better for everyone.
▶ Providing skills-based training. Your mentor should have the knowledge base you want and share their expertise in a precise and organized way.
▶ Helping to figure out the rate of return. An experienced mentor can help you determine what your time is worth per hour and how to price services for maximum return. They can also help you decide whether is it time to hire staff to support or provide specific services.
▶ Managing a team. Your mentor can help you create an environment that is positive and supportive so everyone wants to come to work.
