welcome to AHRMA Mag Photos by: Kevin McIntosh

PUBLISHER The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association EDITOR Joe W. Koury joe.koury@ahrma.org PAGE LAYOUT DESIGNER Kevin McIntosh kevin.mcintosh@ahrma.org TOOL BOX TIPS CONTRIBUTOR Eric Kraft with Joe W. Koury EDITORIAL CONTRIBUTORS

Sakis Vasilopoulos and Kenny Pruitt, two of the many interesting folks that make up a race weekend.

Greetings race fans. Joe W. Koury here. I have no thought-provoking words for you this month so I’m handing page four off to AHRMA MAG’s talented and oh-so-capable graphic arts guru and page layout designer, Kevin McIntosh. He’s also a bang-up photographer and race reporter. His work on the Roebling Road race coverage is dazzling. Enjoy.

....................................... Thanks Joe for the opportunity to revisit the editors column, it's been a year since the last time I put words here and, boy, what a year it has been. We have all endured so many challenges, from the impact of COVID, social/political issues, event cancellations, crazy weather (sorry Joe and the rest of Texas), to name just a few. Over this past year, the one thing Joe and I hope has been a silver lining during these challenging times is of course your issue of AHRMA MAG, when the USPS decides to deliever it... haha. As Joe mentioned, I was at Roebling for the Roadrace event in February and while I didn't take part in the racing (still recovering from last years get-offs), I did lap the paddock many times over, watching, listening and noting the activity that is a AHRMA race weekend. While social distancing practices were observed, it didn't stop those who attended from enjoying the weekend. The bikes still need last second attention, tires warmed, and while race leathers might not fit quite as well as they did last year, everyone figured out a way to get that zipper closed. When I arrrived at the track Friday night I came across Sakis Vasilopoulos as the paddock was quieting and the tempatures dropped. I spent a good hour simply listening to Sakis tell many racing and life stories as he finished his bike prep, from his days racing in his home country of Greece to why you never let anyone else work on your bikes. Sakis, was my perfect first encounter at the track. I have to admit It did feel weird to be at the track and not racing. I missed that feeling of the morning hustle to get ready for practice, waiting for first call and the rush of excitment that comes with it. Luckily though, I easily get distracted and from the moment I arrived Saturday morning at dawn until the track went dark, I had my own race... to collect those little moments on and off the track... as once they happen, they are gone, and never come back. One of those moments was chatting with Kenny Pruitt, a volunteer working Pit-in. Kenny was prepped for the chilly temps in a sweet one piece and wrap-around hood, it was a sight to behold. When I told Kenny my last name (McIntosh) he said, "I live in McIntosh County, Georgia" and then I said, "I have a brother name Ken, but if I ever called him Kenny, he would kill me." We both then laughed and went on our way. The day was like that, little moments on and off the track. Be it between close friends, family, the person pitted next to you or someone in need of help with their bike. Being a part of those moments is why we do what we do and I thank all of you for letting me capture just a few of them for the pages of AHRMA MAG.

Rules Change Proposals Did the title of this month’s column get your attention?

AHRMA’s leadership makes a point of listening to members’ input and suggestions, and y’all have lots of suggestions. Coming up soon will be our annual rules proposal period. It seems that every year we receive more and more proposals, 114 plus last year alone. We have outgrown our old system of accepting, processing, and deciding on these proposals. There have been times when our system was choked by the weight of so many individual submissions. One of several proposed knee-jerk solutions was to limit which disciplines would be eligible for requests in a given year, or some other strategy to only receive a smaller number of decisions to process. Instead, our board of trustees chose to focus on making the process more efficient so that we could accommodate everyone, every year. It has gotten better. In previous years, the process seemed to drag on, losing its momentum at times. This year, we will be shortening the overall length of the process to improve the rhythm of flow while still offering ample time for members to participate. This schedule shift might even get the handbook published a bit sooner.

Much of the work is done at the Rules and Eligibility Committees’ level. These volunteers deserve our gratitude. Thank you to the Rules and Eligibility Committee members, very much. At this time let me also single out AHRMA's executive administrator (par excellence), Cindy McLean, and Trustee, Kevin Burns, for their dedication to this mission. Thank you, Cindy and Kevin,! For this year’s program we are asking each member who submits a proposal to please be deliberate in following the stated rules for submission. When we get loosely worded or short-cutted documents it really hinders our ability to meet the goal of accommodating each and every member. Please be part of the solution, not… We are taking steps designed to make AHRMA's operation more efficient and effective. Thank you for the cooperation. – Arthur Kowitz AHRMA Chairman of the Board 386.547.9504 dbsuperbiker@gmail.com

APRIL 2021

Well, where do i start? My first experience with AHRMA Roadracing was at the 2021 season opener at Roebling Road Raceway and was exactly what I was hoping for—a tight community that supports each other and their sponsors. RRR had a huge turnout of riders even though many couldn’t escape the winter storm that crippled portions of our nation. Not only do I have huge shoes to fill, but times two, as the new roadrace director coming in for Tony & Faynisha Pentecost. Thankfully, the Board decided it would be a good idea to give me a two-round learning curve grace period. The idea was to shadow the Pentecosts and the crew, learn as much of the AHRMA roadrace operations as I could and all the moving parts that come along with a successful national race series. As I introduced myself to registration, tech inspection, start, pit in and pit out, timing and scoring, race control, flaggers, medics, track management, and the list goes on of all the back end moving parts it takes to put on a safe and fun race for all of our members. I quickly saw that the AHRMA roadrace crew take pride in the positions they are in and they do it very well! With a solid crew in place, that allowed me to go through the pits here and there to shake hands and chit chat a little with our members and sponsors. The weekend in Roebling went well and I now knew I only had one more grace period round where I can shadow and learn from the Pentecosts. They put together a solid program and I need to keep it going and only improve on making our members’ racing experience the best they ever had. Fast forward a month, and we are now at round two of the Bridgestone Tires AHRMA National Historic Roadrace Series, Carolina Motorsports Park. Driving from Southern California I experienced weather the entire time and finally made it to South Carolina which was much colder than the 70-degree weather I am used to. As I rolled into CMP Thursday afternoon, I saw Tony, but not Faynisha, and soon after that we were told that Faynisha would not be able to make it. She texted, “I am so disappointed that I couldn't be there. In 30 years, I have never had to miss an event because I was sick.” Let’s all keep her in our thoughts and prayers! With Faynisha out and Tony not able to concentrate, AHRMA made a quick decision to send Tony home to be with family and take care of what’s needed. Now, ALL EYES ON ME, jumping into the deep end with no floaties, no problem; we got this team! What I was hoping for was to have Tony look over my shoulder while I created race grids, race orders and to shadow Faynisha one more time because she is definitely a pro in the tower. The Pentecosts’ dedication put forward to make the programs possible for all of us to enjoy is what we all experienced this past weekend. AHRMA rider count was the best CMP management has seen compared to the other roadrace series. Hundreds of racers filled the paddock, class entries were through the roof with riders adding additional classes as they got off track because they were having so much fun. With so many APRIL 2021

entries, we added two races, more than our normal 12, to ensure there weren’t too many bikes on track at any given time for safety reasons. The sidecar class is not the sideshow anymore; they rallied the teams and came out by the dozens. Props for setting a goal and crushing it. The Thruxton Cup Challenge also saw full grids with all the riders showing up to put on a show, and let me tell you, a show it was! Cold track conditions with some moisture at times caused many red flags and luckily, we made it through the weekend without any major incidents to report. When the helmets went on, racing was intense and competitive throughout the day, but everyone enjoyed each other’s company in the pits after the races. I couldn’t even tell you how many times I heard other riders tell complete strangers to come join them in their pits for food and drinks later. This is the community I want to be a part of. See you all at the races!

NEW RULE CHANGE Why, oh why would you want to change our competition rules? Sounds like a good place to start when writing about AHRMA’s Rules Proposal process, which begins in a few weeks. Actually, the best question to answer first is, “Why?” “Making the competition in the class better overall,” is a good answer. “It will make my bike faster so I don’t get beat so badly,” not so much. We’ve worked over the past four years, with the help of some spectacularly talented AHRMA folk, to improve the process of revising the AHRMA Handbook. This year, we introduce our latest improvements to the process making actions more streamlined and allowing us to realistically get the Handbook printed and in your hands before Thanksgiving. Two important changes from last year include a set of instructions to ease the pain some felt with the online form, and having the Handbook readily available on the website so you can copy and paste the part of the rule you wish to change. You can also paste the rule into the revision box making strikethroughs and underlining easier than ever. Go do your homework, and if you can address either the competition or authenticity of the rule, fill out the form, include some documentation and/or a strong rationale, and get it submitted by May 15. And remember, we’re all in this together. - Kevin Burns Steps to Creating a Rule Change Proposal

Rule Change Proposal Process Developed by Cindy McLean & Kevin Burns

Step 1 - Fully complete all of your personal information including your membership number. Only submissions made by active members with Full Memberships will be accepted for consideration. Step 2 - Select Discipline/Category that is affected by this Rule Change Proposal from the dropdown field and whether it is a new rule or an existing rule in in the AHRMA Handbook. If it is an existing rule, please provide the rule number as it appears in the 2021 AHRMA Handbook. Step 3 - For New Rule submission, you may either provide the complete rule in the New Rule Text edit area, or upload a pdf file through the Supporting Documentation Upload tool. New rules will not be accepted without complete and comprehensive rules. Proceed to Step 6. Step 4 - If this is a rule which currently exists in the 2021 AHRMA Handbook, copy the rule to be changed from the Handbook and include it in the “Original Rule Text” edit area. 8

Bridgestone Tires AHRMA

National Historic

Cup Roadracing Series By: Kevin McIntosh

Wet road, dry road, sunny road, warm road, frosty road, chilly and windy road, it was all there at the first AHRMA Road Race event of the 2021 season hosted at Roebling Road Raceway. The winter weather and recent snowstorms, along with local forecast did its best to scare people away, but the final numbers proved AHRMA racers were more than ready to get back on track after a most difficult 2020 season, with a solid turnout of 215 riders. Multiple classes gridding more than 15 bikes, were ripe for some great battles throughout the weekend. Having two days of practice to knock off the cobwebs and get a solid pool of rookie racers a chance to participate in the AHRMA Academy of Road Racing (AAR) was much appreciated by all. There were 14 AAR students between the two days, with some, like Tsutomu “Tom” Okada #2 traveling from as far away as California to take part in the class and hopefully race. Running a 1968 Yamaha DT1, Tom learned firsthand the challenges that come with riding a vintage two-stroke race bike in variable weather, or any kind of weather for that matter as his engine sized during one of his first on track practice sessions. Tom wasn’t deterred though and with some help from fellow AHRMA members, was able to get his bike running again in between attending in-class sessions. Though he did miss Thursday’s mock race, he was able to participate in Friday’s, passed the class and got to race the weekend. Nice work Tom and welcome to the AHRMA family. 10

For the rest of the practice day riders, the mixed weather and track conditions did invoke some pause, but it didn’t stop those hungry for track time like Wes Orloff who didn’t skip a beat on the wet track, coming from Wisconsin and just stepping off an ice racing bike days before, this didn’t faze him at all—weather be damned! Between the two race days, Saturday was the winner, by a mile. While temps were definitely cool, barely breaking into the 60s mid-day, if at all. The sun was out, the wind was calm and the track ready for some racing action.

Race 1 There was plenty of action in the CB160 exhibition class. While Rob Hall #270 took top honors both days, 2nd and 3rd place were not so easily decided. Christopher Akaydin #082 took 2nd with a strong finish Saturday with John Scales #294 inching out Stuart Sanders #215 for the final Podium spot. Stuart would not be held off for long though, as he grabbed 2nd on Sunday, with Brian Larrabure nipping at his heels just .29 seconds behind, or should I say, next to him, for 3rd. A bit further back in the CB160 race, Tim Terrell had to pull out all the tricks to stay ahead of Mitchell Barnes who had a DNS the day before. With a difference of only .001 of a second at the checker, it was clearly a highlight of the weekend for both of them. In Novice Historic Production Lightweight, Frank Cotton #6F and Beasley Ayers swapped the top spot Saturday. and Sunday. The same story unfolded for 3rd with Mike Kirby #10 and Steven Fowler #716 swapping the last podium spot each day. Nice work Steven on dropping your best lap time by more than three seconds between the two days. Race 2 Jm Padron #15R led the pack both days on his Sound of Thunder Ducati 1199. Keeping his closest competitor, James Eberhart #245, at arms reach or 1.785 seconds at the Checker on Saturday, followed by Eric Burrell #6E in 3rd. Sunday saw Steve Terbruegen #702X step up to 2nd spot and Mark Tenn #22A into 3rd. Ralph Staropoli #80L handled the competition in Open Two-Stroke with relative ease. The real battle was for 2nd and 3rd between David Crussell #117, Greg Glevicky #R73 and Stewart Aitken-Cade #251, with David taking 2nd Saturday and Greg shadowing him just 0.5 seconds behind in 3rd.

Sound of Singles on Saturday had a great battle between Kevin Greimel #97K and Eric Block #922, so close at the finish, they both recorded the same time 10:01.583. How exactly is that possible? I guess it’s like Robin Hood splitting an arrow; very impressive and well match riders. Eric did take home 1st on Saturday when the dust settled, and Eric took it right back on Sunday. Race 3 Alex McLean #122 comfortably manned the 350 GP top spot all weekend, while Jerry Duke #Z7 found 2nd both days as well. The Battle for 3rd on Saturday found Colton Roberts #9 just a bit faster to the finish than David Roper #1B. Saturday’s Sportman 350 clash was really nothing to write home about, with Michael Murray #072 taking an easy win. Sunday’s race on the other hand found David Miller #69M on the hunt for the top spot, only missing it by 0.274 seconds to Murray once again. Hunter Longshore #999 followed both days in 3rd. Race 4 Sound of Thunder 3 had great battles for the top three spots both days. On Saturday, with Steve Decamp #13D and Kevin Greimel #97K going nose-tonose all the way to the checker. Steve found a .001 second edge to take the win, while Chris Haesemeyer #80H, Shane Quigg #762 and Chris White #412 sliced and diced the whole race with Haesemeyer finding the checker with less than a .5 second difference between all three riders. too excited to get back to racing as he jumped the start on Saturday, giving Scott Billings #35R the win, Bob Berbeco #690 2nd and Larrabure taking 3rd, though clearly having the fastest laps of the day. Luckily the start on Sunday’s race was clean and it was clear Scott Billings made some changes as he closed a 30 second gap from Saurday. to come within .168 of a second of Larrabure at the checker to a much better race than the day before.

Paddock Puppies Words & Photos by: Kevin McIntosh

With racing coast to coast, there is a lot of travel involved and while there are options to board our pets, taking them with us is many times the best solution for both pet and owner. There is nothing like having a loyal pit mate to help you navigate a clutch basket swap, do a lap around the track, discuss gearing options or just close your eyes with for a little pre-race snooze... if that's even possible with two-stroke zingers flying around the track. No matter how your race went, there is always someone happy to see you return safe and sound. They are ready to take you for a walk and talk about how things went on track, just don't forget a ball, a stick or even a 10mm wrench might work - they're not picky.

Race 5 Was a great turnout of sidecars for the first race of the season. There were 7 classes represented and 1 new rookie crew added to the mix. There were great battles in F1 and TT2 both days, with George “Boris” Stroud & B. Stroud #111SC robbing Nicholas Bailey & Adam Cramer #603 of top honors in F1 Saturday. Bailey & Cramer did return the favor on Sunday with both crews dropping there best lap times by 2+ seconds. In Modern Sidecar TT2 Dale Lavender’s rig #S46 with Muirisha Lavender as passenger crossed the checkered with plenty of room between then a 2nd Place Tony Doukas & Lisa Doukas #8NZ. Dutch Stivason and Jerry Hoag #47S brought up the rear for the final podium spot Saturday. Sunday’s results were the same, but it should be noted, the Doukas crew definitely brought their game as they shaved the finish line gap from 4.690 Seconds to 0.994 seconds. Nice racing. It should also be noted that Tim Joyce’s Super Vintage SC2 #309 rig was clipping off some pretty modern sidecar lap times, nice riding!

APRIL 2021

Race 6 The battle for the top spot in Sound of Thunder 2 was fierce on Saturday. Shane Quigg #762 motored to the checkered first, with Mark Tenn #22A squeaking out 2nd and Clint Austin #720 grabbing 3rd just a half a second behind Quigg. On Sunday, Nathan Kern came out of the shadows and put all three top finishers from Saturday’s SOT 2 battle on notice. Kern grabbed the top spot, with a healthy 12+ second gap at the finish line pushing the best weekend lap time to 1:17.212. Austin improved to 2nd, pushing Quigg down to 3rd. Would also like to acknowledge Gary Orr #111 for sorting out his issues from Saturday’s race and coming Peter Nicolosi Photo: etechphoto back to finish a strong 4th place on Sunday. Also included in race 6 was a new exhibition class call Formula Lightning Extreme for the latest production electric race bikes out there. While the class only had one rider on the grid, Peter Nicolosi #1I, made the most of his track time and put down impressive numbers with a fastest lap of 1:24.923 and best average speed of 85.631 mi/h.

Race 7 Alex McLean wasted no time leaving his fellow Classic Sixties participants behind and joining the Classic Sixties 650 group for an evenly matched battle to the finish. McLean bested them all by just over a second for 1st in his class. John Rickard #864 grabbed 1st from Mike Baker #17C by .191 of a second and Jake Hall #588 was right behind just Bob Lewin (724) Formula 125 battles with over a second behind David Kaufman (C73) Classic Sixties 650 for 3rd to round out Photo: Kevin McIntosh the Classic Sixties podium. Sportsman 500 was a bit of a cluster, with lots of DNSs, even

keeping the 2020 Champ, Eric Cook #1P, in the pits on Saturday. This gave Michael Murray #072 a clear path to victory, with David Bossert #56D 2nd and Herm Narciso #D33 in 3rd. On Sunday, the only consistent thing was Murray making the podium, but this time in 2nd, while Cook found his way to the grid, laid down some solid laps and took the win 2.380 seconds ahead of Murray. Hunter Longshore #999 found his way into 3rd, while Narciso posted a DNS. Formula 125 had a strong showing from Colton Roberts #9, taking 1st both days. Things got interesting for 2nd and 3rd both days with Bob Lewin #724, Greyson Rogers #805 and Randy Knoop #17G mixing it up Saturday and Sunday. Lewin took 2nd on Sat and 3rd went to Rogers on Saturday and Knoop improved from 4th to 2nd on Sunday, pushing Lewin down to 3rd.. Race 8 Another great battle for first place in Saturday’s BOT 1 900cc-Open, with .677 of a second separating the top 3 spots. Brian Larrabure #14 took the top podium spot on Saturday, with Mark Tenn #22A 2nd and Gary Orr #111 in 3rd. 18

On Sunday, Nathan Kern once again made his presence known (remember race 6 SOT 2) and took the BOT1 900cc-Open win by a decent margin of 6.640 seconds. He also made sure no one would forget him, by stomping out the fastest competitive lap of the weekend with a 1:16:814. Orr took home 2nd place and Paul Vance climbed up from 5th to snag 3rd, chopping over 20 seconds off his total track time from Saturday. Nice work Paul! Formula Vintage was clean grid both Saturday and Sunday, no DNSs, just solid racing from David Crussell #117 who grabbed 1st on Saturday away from Mark Morrow #909 by 1.294 seconds. Brad Coleman #77R settled for 3rd Saturday just 3.869 seconds behind, but came back Sunday for the win ahead of Crussell and Will Brint #118 who inched out Morrow for the final spot. Motard numbers were light this round, but luckily Daniel Peter #1J had a decent shovel and dug himself out of the recent snowstorm that hit Chicago and made his way to Roebling.

Unfortunately, that shovel wouldn’t help him get to the top of the podium either Saturday or Sunday as Eric Block #922 had his number Saturday, which was 3 seconds at the finish line. Andrea Fregonese #30X took 3rd on Saturday and 2nd on Sunday. Race 9 200 Grand Prix Plus had a healthy grid of 13 participants on Saturday, but top honors for both days was quickly established by Rob Hall #270 and finished both days with gaps of 30+ seconds between he and 2nd place John Scales #294 on Saturday and Don Hollingsworth #950 on Sunday. 3rd place went to Lorraine Crussell who didn’t give up 2nd place easily either day. Saturday’s Class C Footshift was a warm-up to Sunday’s battle between Alex McLean #122 and David Tompkins #33Q, with just .614 of second between them at the checkered. Grant Spence #24 rounded out the top three on Sunday. Tim Joyce #309 and Ralph Wessell #81 danced for 8 laps in Class C Handshift, with Joyce victorious by the slim margin of .542 seconds on Saturday. The Wind must have gotten the best of

Wessell on Sunday as the gap widened to 18.985 seconds. Luke Conner #69 held the 3rd spot both days. Would also like to give a shout out to the newest member of the Handshift grid, Stephen Aretz #244 and his ’45 flat head handshift Harley-Davidson. Stephen not only passed the race school, won “most colorful mask award” during class, but also finished a solid 5th during both days of racing. Welcome to the fold Stephen! Race 10 The action built up over the weekend in Next Gen Superbike Lightweight, with Harry Vanderlinden #32V and Brad Coleman #77R making it interesting on Saturday with Vanderlinden taking the win by .710 of a second and David Wallace #139 grabbing 3rd. On Sunday things got really interesting in Next Gen, with multiple battles for the top three spots. Coleman and Vanderlinden were at it again for the top spot, with Coleman just getting by at the line. Keith Powell #42 and Shawn Smith #91 both had dibs on 3rd causing a few “puckering” moments throughout the race. The last podium spot was decided by .012 of a second with Powell finding the flag first. Formula Thunder found James Eberhart #245 turning the tables on Jim Padron #15R from race 2 and taking home the win on Saturday by .930 of a second. Scott Billings #35R and Mark Tenn #22A rounded out the top four with a great battle to the finish. On Sunday Jim Padron finally caught wind of Nathan Kern's arrival to the grid and stayed one step ahead or .790 of a second ahead at the finish line. Gary Orr #111 jumped from 6th on Saturday to 3rd on Sunday.

Ralph Staropoli #80L set the pace both days, taking home 1st in Sound of Singles, followed by Stewart Aitken-Cade #251 and Thomas Teather #35T on Saturday. Teather stepped up to 2nd on Sunday, with Edward Blount #55C slipping right behind for 3rd on Sunday. On Sunday the 250 Grand Prix was a battle of Aermacchis between Don Hollingsworth #950 and David Roper #1B, with Roper fending of a final push by Hollingsworth at the finish with just .315 of a second between them. Michael Burns #4M, Clint Austin #1a, Harry Vanderlinden #32V, Stan Keyes #7 and Kevin Rammer #1V all took top honors in their respective classes both days. Next Gen Superbike 2 on Sunday saw the best action with a five-way battle for the 2nd and 3rd between Eric Burrell #6E, Scott Billings #35R, Jim Padron #15R, Ervin Kollek #4X and Jeff Nelson #020. Race 13 The final race of the day was the Morrow, Read and Orloff show. While Mark Morrow #909 cleaned up in Formula 500 on Saturday, he was simply showing the 500 Premier Vintage Cup riders, Tony Read #176 and Wes Orloff #74, the way around the track in preparation for Sunday. Tony and Wes were definitely taking notes on Saturday and came out of the gate Sunday nipping at Morrow’s heels the whole race. Mark had to step up his game to fend off both attackers and was able to sweat it out for a final win of the race weekend. Oh wait, Read and Orloff weren’t even in same class as Morrow, I forgot, it was just that close and such great way to end the first AHRMA road race weekend of 2021. On to Kershaw!

MARK MORROW'S

CORNER AHRMA ACADEMY OF ROADRACING

HEADMASTER

It has been a week since the final red flag flew at CMP, and there has been a lot of discussion about the how, the why, and how do we fix it? I’d like to touch on a couple points. Bob Demetrius had a great suggestion: that all racers review the standard flag procedures. He mentioned a crazy moment when he was reeling in another racer on the back straight when a yellow flag came out. The bike he was slowly catching suddenly hit the brakes and Bob was lucky enough to barely miss him and avoided a horrible accident. I competed in four races last weekend and experienced a career high NINE red flags in those four races. In those nine red flags, I myself witnessed several situations just like Bob’s and also had the additional experience of having a racer blow by me very close on a red flag, going well over 100 MPH, while I was going about 50. I fully agree with Bob that a review of section 3.7 is in order. I’ve listed the rules from the rulebook and added a little perspective below:

Stationary yellow flag:

Whenever you see a red flag, before you do anything, PUT YOUR HAND UP IN THE AIR, count to three and SLOWLY roll off the gas. Reduce speed. The rulebook states: “approximately 25 MPH,” but I will be suggesting that this be amended to “no more than 50% race pace” during the next rules review period. A straight MPH figure doesn’t allow for the differences between short tracks and long tracks. This procedure is different than what many track day organizations recommend, (many recommend 80-90% race pace!) and this is a good reason why there are so many cases of dangerously close closing speeds on red flags. It is imperative to get slowed down, but you must make sure you are seen first and slow down gradually. One last thing I would like to talk about is new racers. If you haven’t noticed, we have retired the old safety vests and switched to blue t-shirts. The new shirts look great and are easy to see, but there were several incidents this weekend that saw new riders being stood up, parked or even hit by more experienced racers. Remember that all of us wore a vest or t-shirt over our leathers at one point. You are giving them extra room not just for their safety, but for yours as well. Thanks to Bob for the excellent suggestion! I will use this space going forward to address racing education, both for speed and safety. If anyone has a particular technique, problem corner or safety question they would like to see discussed here, please email me at Roadracing.academy@ahrma.org and maybe your question/suggestion will be here next month. Till next time!

Potentially dangerous situation either on or off the track. You may pass and you do not have to slow down.

Mark

I teach my students this is a “heads up” flag. Keep on racing but be aware that a mistake in this area could have potentially worse results. Only slow if it looks like maintaining race pace there will put people at risk. Otherwise, carry on as normal.

Waving yellow flag:

Dangerous situation on the track. No passing allowed. Note that you are not REQUIRED to slow down, but there is a good chance you will need to. This doesn’t mean keep it pinned and “send it!” through the section, but it does mean that suddenly slowing down could make an already bad situation worse. The reality is that most yellow flags will result in a slight reduction in pace, but you should NEVER just chop the throttle and park it. It all depends on the situation. If you cannot see what is causing the waving yellow, then it’s a good idea to back off a little just in case there is a sudden surprise around then next bend. But if you can see the cause and it isn’t a factor in your safety, it is a better practice to maintain a safe speed and get past the incident. The key element is to never “slam on the brakes.”

Red flag:

Racing is suspended. Safely reduce speed and report back to hot pit for further instruction.

Ocala, Florida, on February 27, witnessed 4SR AHRMA National Vintage Dirt Track Series Round 2 TT and Round 3 Short Track, under extremely good summer-like weather. The "Bullring," as the place is referred to, lived up to some close, tight, racing. TT started the afternoon off on a uniquely laid out course, with BSA-mounted, Beno Rodi taking the uncontested Dinosaur and Classic 500/750. The 250 Sportsman class saw Henry Samsing on his special Rokon hold off Richard Brodock, to take the win. Roger Veith, on an always beautifully prepared Yamaha, beat out Beno Rodi in the Sportsman 750 race, which is part of the Dick Mann Team Challenge. The Seventies TwoStroke was a carbon copy of with Rokonmounted Henry Samsing finishing first, while Richard Brodock came in second. David Aldana was able to hold off the charges of

the Tim Bolin-tuned Yamaha raced by Charlie Williams, until Williams stalled his bike leading back into the tight and always challenging TT infield, to take the win in the combined Four-Stroke Super Singles, and Seventies Singles 50+ class, which is also part of the Dick Mann Team Challenge. Roger Veith had to settle for second behind Aldana on his XL350 Honda, in the Super Senior class. The TT layout had two really tight right-hand turns that had some wondering how to get around them. The track people gave AHRMA a great dust-free event. Late afternoon saw Round 3 Short Track practice getting underway with temperatures cooing down. The track was smooth and fast. The short track surface stayed moist and consistent. When the starting lights went off, there were plenty of different racing lines, some faster than others. Depending on bike and rider ability, all was fast and safe. The new "Spanish Cup" class was well represented by a good group of serious racers. Coming out on top was ex-Grand National winner Garth Brow, followed by two more ex-champs, Lance Jones, and Charlie Roberts. Fourth and fifth went to Mark Zeissler and Lucien Marioneaux, all aboard Bultacos. Was a great day of racing in the bullring, can't wait to do it again next month. It seems there has been somewhat of a ‘deindustrialization’ in recent decades, the can-do spirit is dwindling, and younger generations have little interest in learning the difference between a flat blade and Phillips® screwdriver. Reviving vintage motorcycles is an accomplishment with a definite cool factor as a bonus. I would’ve jumped at the chance to work in a shop like this one when I was young. It’s now a lost art. When talking restorations, the subject of wheels always comes up. Beautifully restored wheels are one of the most visible parts of any restoration, and nothing screams "amateur hour" like gray, corroded spokes on an otherwise shiny, beautiful bike. But the fact is, many restorers are hesitant to re-lace wheels on their own; it seems so complicated and daunting, but it's really not. I suggest starting out with a bike that has full-width brake hubs. These are the very easiest to re-lace since you only have two different bend/length spokes, and the angles are the same for each side of the wheel. Once you understand the techniques involved, you can move on to conical hubs. Be sure to take lots of detailed pictures before you start so that you have good reference material—especially when you start working with conical hubs. In that case, you could have four different length/bend spokes, and the drilled holes in the rim will have different angles side-to-side, so you need to know the rim orientation in relation to the hub. Once you are satisfied you have enough photo documentation, start removing the spokes. I prefer to loosen and unscrew each spoke and remove it the way it was installed, but if the spokes are frozen or rusted

all the trouble of rebuilding your wheels, do yourself a favor and only relace with quality stainless spokes and nipples. These will ALWAYS look great—even after many years. There are two motorcycle wheel service companies in California who support AHRMA: Buchanan’s Spoke and Rim, Inc., and DubyaUSA. Pricing varies by the size and complexity of the wheel. Once you have new spokes, the hubs are polished/painted, and your rims looking new, lay the parts out. For the sake of simplicity, we are going to assume you are lacing a standard, 36-hole rim with full-width hub and only two different bend/types of spokes. For the most part, the process will be the same for conical hubs, but you could have up to four different length/bend spoke types. Separate the spokes into 18 "inners" and 18 "outers." Inner spokes are the ones where the knob at the end of the spoke is on the outside of the

to the nipples, this may not be an option. In this case, you will probably have to use bolt cutters. Whichever way you go, try to release the tension on the rim evenly on each spoke. This will help prevent warping as you disassemble. You will likely be ordering custom spokes, so be sure to save one complete, uncut example of each spoke type with its nipple. Label your samples with masking tape as inner or outer and hub or brake side so you can mail to your spoke supplier to duplicate (Photo 1). Now is a good time to clean, maybe bead blast, and polish or paint the hubs. It’s also a great time to replace wheel bearings if there is any grittiness or roughness at all when you spin the bearing with your finger. If the rims need attention, take care of that now too—especially paying attention to wire-wheeling the rust off the inside of steel rims. If you’re going to

hub flange. These are the spokes you push through from the outside of the hub. They will generally have less of a head angle bend than the outer spokes. Start with the inners and push them all through on both sides of the hub. Skip a hole with every spoke for the outers, later. Now lay the hub down on your work surface (doesn't matter which side is up) and check your reference photos to see which way the spokes are angled on each side of the hub (clockwise, or counter). Arrange the spokes roughly like a pinwheel in the proper directions (Photo 2). It doesn't matter on a full-width hub which way the rim is oriented, but I'm a little OCD, so I still check my reference photos, and have it set the same way as original (i.e., letters on rim right side up when hub is brake side up). You will often

have wear patterns on the outside of the hub which help show which holes originally held outer spokes. If not, when disassembling the wheel, it might be helpful to make a mark along an outer spoke on each side of the hub. As I said, if you have conical hubs, there can be three or four different spoke types. Make sure you know which is which. You might even have all “inner” spokes on the narrow, “conical” side of the hub. Either way, the lacing process is much the same— all the inners first—and then the outers. The drilled holes in the rim are angled either towards the left or the right side of the hub. Further, they are angled for either clockwise, or counterclockwise spokes. So, there are four different angles to the rim holes. (Not all spoke hole angles in the rim are the same. The spoke angle for a rim laced to a small diameter disc brake hub is not the same as a rim drilled for a 200mm drum brake hub. This is important when purchasing new, replacement, aftermarket aluminum rims.) Start with one of the inner spokes you have placed into the top of the hub. We’re assuming the hub and rim are lying on your build

4 table with the inner spokes on each side of the hub pinwheeled out in the proper directions. It should be readily apparent which rim hole is angled up and at the proper orientation toward your inner spokes on the top of the hub. Start one of your spokes in one of these holes. Just push through the hole and put a nipple on a few threads. Be a few drops sure to use of no-seize lubricant on the threads. Buchanan’s supplies a bottle of this with every spoke set. Skip three holes and start the next spoke on that same side of the hub. Continue around until all nine spokes are started (Photo 3). Now you can start the inner spokes on the other side of the hub, but first, hold the hub firmly and rotate the rim in the direction that pulls all the slop out of the nine spokes. You don’t have to flip the wheel over. The proper hole should be apparent, as you will only be able to properly reach one hole with the correct angle (Photo 4). __Once all inner spokes have been started, you can start inserting the outer spokes. Since they push through from

the inside of the hub and lay OVER the existing inner spokes, they are very easy to install. Obviously, they rotate in the opposite direction of the inners. Pull your wheel assembly over the edge of your workbench to make it easier to push the spoke up through from the bottom (Photo 5). Again, there should only be one correctly angled hole that the spoke will reach (Photo 6). Do all the spokes on one side of the hub (Photo 7), and then flip the assembly over and start on the other side (Photo 8). This is very straightforward on full-width drum assemblies. But on a conical hub you may have to remove a spoke or two to insert each of this last set of nine outer

there are no threads showing. At this point, you simply continue going around and around until all spokes are finger tight. This process results in a rim with little or no hop to deal with. There will be some spokes that start to tighten before others, but the majority of the spokes should be snug. Go around the rim, find the spokes that are not yet snug, and finger tighten them. It may be helpful during this process, if you are doing this on the top of a bench, to block each side of the rim up a little so that it is approximately centered in the hub.

spokes. Just reattach as soon as you have pushed the new spoke through, and it is in place. There is another method for installing the outside spokes. If you have a wheel truing stand, mount the wheel in the stand, and then install the outside spokes. This makes it easier to insert the spokes and access the nipple holes. Now that all spokes are installed loosely (Photo 9), start twisting them with your fingers a few turns at a time going around and around the rim until there is slightly less than a quarter inch of thread showing above the nipples (Photo 10.) Next, go around the rim and twist each spoke until

With everything finger tight, continue to tighten the spokes a half or quarter turn at a time with the proper size spoke wrench, or a slotted or crosshead driver, and continue going around and around the rim. Now is the time to check the rim for axial runout or wobble before the spokes start to tighten. It will be difficult to correct this if the spokes are too tight. Continue going around the rim a half-turn or so at a time until you judge all spokes are almost tight enough. If you don’t happen to have a truing stand, simply put your axle in a vise, slide the wheel onto the axle and spin it (Photo 11). If your wheel

was true before, or if you used a new rim, and assuming you were careful to evenly tighten the spokes, it will probably be very close to true now. If not, you must start removing the wobble (axial runout) and hop (radial runout). Wheel truing stands have adjustable arms/pointers that are used to gauge runout. If you are truing a wheel mounted on the axle, you can make your own by clamping anything close to the edge of the rim. You can also use a permanent marker held close to the rim to mark the wobble areas. This provides a visual reference so you can determine the range (in degrees) of the area that requires adjustment. Some wheel builders use a dial indicator to measure runout, but this is not necessary. Minor wobble can be corrected by tightening the spokes on only one side, but excessive wobble may require loosening the spokes on one side before tightening the opposite side. The same is true for hop. Motorcycle rims are seldom perfectly round (hop) or straight (wobble), so you must deal with these irregularities while truing the wheel. You will have to use your arm like a torque wrench and "feel" for even tension once they start to get tight—and some spokes

will tighten before others. Your goal is to get to the point where all the spokes are at about the same tension. Spoke manufacturers will have a recommended torque specification and you can purchase an adapter for a small beam-type torque wrench. Now, go around the rim a few times to get all the spokes to what feels like proper tension. For the typical dirt bike, the wheel will be plenty true enough. For a street or roadracing bike, you may have to enlist the aid of an expert to get it perfectly true. The ideal maximum axial and radial runout for street or roadrace wheels is 0.5mm. It’s not unusual for spokes to ‘bed in’ or ‘take a set’ on freshly laced aluminum wheels, which means they might loosen after the first few rides. This will require checking the spokes regularly until the tension stabilizes. Invest in a quality spoke wrench. Some have reverse taper jaws which help prevent spoke nipple deformation. Once you do one wheel, you will really understand the process much better. Hopefully, you will find lacing wheels to be one of the most fun and rewarding parts of any restoration.

AHRMA Supports Daytona Racing Legends

APRIL 2021

Thanks to generous donations from the members of the Daytona Beach and racing communities, a location for the monument was secured, construction completed, and the monument was dedicated in 2002. The annual Daytona 200 Monument Gathering draws motorcycle and racing enthusiasts from around the world to witness the installation of new plaques. The monument is located at 100 N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach, FL, on the beachside of the Daytona Beach Hilton-Ocean Walk Village. The event will be held on March 10, starting around 10:30AM. Photo by: Amy Jacques

The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) is adding its support to a legendary racing venue. On March 10, 2021, AHRMA unveiled its own plaque for the Daytona 200 Monument during a special gathering in Daytona Beach, Florida. “The Daytona 200 Monument and AHRMA are a perfect fit,” said Arthur Kowitz, 2021 Chair of the AHRMA Board of Trustees. “We’re keeping the history and memories this monument honors alive by keeping the kinds of bikes that have raced at this event over the years on the racetrack.” On January 24, 1937, the first Daytona 200 was held on a 4.2-mile course that included both paved and off-road sections of Daytona Beach. The majority of the motorcycles and riders attending the event during the early years were those participating in the competition. Eventually, spectators began arriving on their own motorcycles and as the popularity and attendance grew, the race took on a festival atmosphere. The event would eventually evolve into the internationally known Daytona Bike Week. The Daytona 200 Motorcycle Race, under normal circumstances, draws more than one half million spectators. A number of years ago, Dick Klamfoth, three-time winner of the Daytona 200 Motorcycle race, attended a Bike Week and met with Bike Week fans on Main Street in Daytona. He was surprised to learn how few of them knew the history of the 200, shared his memories of racing on the beach and explained the origins of Bike Week to those who were unaware of its racing heritage. That experience inspired him to create the Daytona 200 Monument to preserve its history.

I began my race career very early, beginning with circle track quarter midget racing at around age eight. I moved over into road race circuit kart racing and did that well into my teens. My involvement in motorcycle racing didn't come until my late 20s. I also began motorcycle riding when I was very young, trail riding and such since I was eight as well, and then of course riding on the street when I acquired my driver's license. I began track day riding around 2012 and took the race school in 2014. My Father, Stirling Watts, raced motorcycles in the late 1970s and into the mid-80s, first with his 1972 Ducati 350 Mk3 street bike purchased new from the Ducati dealership in Columbus, OH. It was converted into a race bike around 1985 (this is the same motorcycle I now race!). He also raced a Suzuki APRIL 2021

GS1000 and 750 at one point. Dad competed with AHRMA, WERA, AAMRR and with the FGPRA in Florida. It was at this time that we think my dad and (my wife) Colleen's dad may have competed together at one point, but didn't know each other back then. Fast forward to 2013, and I began the restoration of my dad's Ducati 350 race bike. The bike had fallen into pieces over the years and was a pile of parts. I contracted the help of a local friend in Orlando at the time and he assisted me in getting the bike back into track-ready form My dad's Ducati in pieces, ready to be brought back to life initially. The engine was and back on the track. sent to Syd's Cycles in St. Petersburg, FL, for a complete rebuild in 2019. Many changes have happened since then to make it a proper and competitive 350GP-class bike.

By 2015, Colleen and I met—on motorcycles of course! Not via racing, but street riding with a local group ride. Colleen's motorcycling days had just begun before we met. Her roots started with horses, and she wasn’t involved with motorcycles until her late 20s. As Colleen and I got to know each other more we discovered the racing roots that each of our families had. I got Colleen interested in track day riding and we did many track days over the next few years. I had just completed the initial restoration of the Ducati 350 when I met Colleen and she encouraged me to enter it in an AHRMA race, which I had been procrastinating about. Daytona 2015 was the bike's initial event, and I managed to finish first on Sunday that weekend in Formula 250. In 2016, Colleen and I took the trip of a lifetime to England and the Isle of Man where we toured on motorcycles and spectated at the Classic TT week on the IOM. I proposed to Colleen at Peel Castle on the IOM and we were officially married in 2018. Colleen continued to accompany me to AHRMA races over the next year or so but grew anxious to join the action herself ! She began restoration of her dad's ( Jim Urmson) former race bike, a BMW R90 which had been sitting in disrepair for years in a corner of the garage. He raced with FGPRA in the ‘70s and early ‘80s and retired from racing when she was born. For the next year or so she completely disassembled the engine and bike and completed a full restoration to the bike's former glory. In this same timeframe, she took her race school as well. The R90, unfortunately, isn't completely legal for any competitive AHRMA classes in its current form, so it was decided that Colleen wanted to begin racing on a smaller displacement bike. At the Roebling Road round in 2018, Colleen discovered a KTM RC390 for sale. Neither of us knew anything about these bikes at the time and you could have never told me we would become ‘the KTM 390 people!’ Colleen purchased the bike and began racing later that year at CMP. Shortly after this, and after riding her 390 myself, AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

I became obsessed with the bike and immediately contacted the team and owner of the bike she bought to see what else was available for sale. I bought my KTM RC390 later that same year. Since then, we have become known as the go-to KTM people in the paddock. We thoroughly enjoy seeing new racers and appreciate the opportunity to answer all their questions, from “What do I need to lockwire on this bike and what are the things to check after buying a used 390 track bike?” to “Can you prep my bike for me and check it over before I take it to an event?” We have swapped out engines several times, have done all the performance modifications, and have run into and fixed all of the common issues with the 390 engine. We now even own a complete backup bike that we bring to most race weekends! Colleen and I have been involved with AHRMA since 2015. Since then, we have made many great friends and racing contacts. We have slowly become regulars at all the southeast road race events every year and have built some great rivalries with fellow racers. At every event in 2019 for example, Eric Lukehart and I consistently had wheel-to-wheel racing, always finishing 1-2 on the KTMs in SOS3. It became known as the "Battle of the Erics!"

Track life is a good life, especially when you podium ;)

We have become great friends with the Morrows, Mark, his wife Eileen, and their daughter who recently visited us at our home while they were in Florida. We had Mark (instructor at the AHRMA Academy of Road Racing) come up and give us some coaching at a private track day at Atlanta Motorsports Park where we are members. We believe the future of AHRMA lies in younger riders being introduced to historic racing. AHRMA provides a great place where that youth meets the wisdom of the seasoned racers. The skills necessary to wrench on a vintage machine are something that needs to be

continued and passed on, and AHRMA is the platform that makes it happen. Colleen and I complete in the FMRRA series in Florida where the KTM 390s are an equally popular machine in their Moto3 class. Most recently, we purchased yet another 390 as a backup bike! Future plans are to run more AHRMA races as we will soon be based out of north Georgia/North Carolina area by the spring this year.

A few things on Eric's mind, engine swaps, his pops, his wife Colleen, his stepson Van and racing... can't forget about racing. See you at the track.

Three things have always commanded my attention: food, women, and motorcycle racing. As I watch my bathroom scale register higher numbers each month and celebrate my engagement to a wonderful woman, that leaves motorcycle racing an unfulfilled dream. So I did what any aspiring dream-fulfiller should do-I started reading. I needed to pick an organizing body, decide on a racing discipline, and choose a bike. I began with a cursory search of the internet and arrived at the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association. I've already traveled to a number of "AHRMA s e AHRMA events, and casually fielded significan emed tly more a bike in its Barber Vintage Festival approach ab a year ago, so the AHRMA seemed than any le other significantly more approachable than organizin g body" any other organizing body. I paid my dues online and, when the rule book arrived in the mail, sat down with a cup of coffee and got down to the Runnining ’79 YZ 125 at Barber 20 business of deciding whether I could 19 really do this. Let me be clear-no rule book is a page turner. The dry, procedural, and information-heavy text is hardly a pleasurable Sunday read. Still, I kept flipping pages. As I absorbed data on the AHRMA's multitude of disciplines and classes-vintage motocross, cross country, road racing, flat track, and trials-a single thought crept into my mind.

What if I did them all? Nah, that would be insane. I'd need to figure out one bike to fit different racing disciplines. As my own mechanic, I'd shoulder the burden of prepping the bike for each class, and I'd have only myself to blame if, in attempting this eclectic lineup, I completely embarrassed myself. Tackling all the AHRMA classes is a huge challenge, but, thanks to the encouragement of my coworkers and friends, it's a challenge I've decided to accept.

The PLAN My plan is simple: I will prepare and race one motorcycle in six different styles of racing over the course of one calendar year: vintage motocross, cross country, enduro, supermoto road racing, flat track, and trials. The events are spread across enough weekends to allow for training and bike prep in between races, and are held at venues all across the Midwest, so the schedule will require a good bit of travel. Add practice sessions and riding schools, and that straightforward plan will consume many late evenings, early mornings, and long weekends in 2021.

bike Mentally, I started with the last element (the bike) and decided on the racing organization-and, therefore, the classes-based the events suited to that bike. If you sort through the classes I've targeted, you will see a decidedly off-road slant, which is intentional. Off-road racing requires less safety gear and bike preparation, and the machines suited to it are often more affordable than their on-track counterparts. That last point certainly applies to my 1989 Honda XR250R.

ies "The XR-ser y ll ca pi ty is not s it r fo n know ee." racing pedigr

The XR-series is not typically known for its racing pedigree. Rather, it's famous for the indestructible nature of its air- and oil-cooled four-stroke engine. Though I've proven twice in the past year that this engine is far from bulletproof, I have the utmost confidence that it can power me through a year of racing (after I spend some late nights turning wrenches). The steel chassis is durable and handles predictably, even if it doesn't possess the same aggressive geometry of the racier CR-series "I will be mechanic, bikes. As a beginner, the rider, and tr uc XR's relatively tame for this mot k driver or personality suits me experiment. cycle " well; if I brought the the most aggressive bike in the paddock, I'd be asking for a trip to the hospital. The XR will be my Swiss Army knife. Ask anyone who has used a Swiss army knife and they'll trot out that saying about a jack of all trades, master of none. I may find myself wishing for the perfectly specialized tool for the task, but the compromise that accompanies a do-itall tool, be it knife or bike, is worth it. I don't have the space or funds to have a different motorcycle for each AHRMA racing discipline, so I'll live with the tradeoffs and tailor the bike as best I can to each task using suspension tuning and zy other small adjustments. "It's a cra t will tha plan, one lot of require a The rider and a wrenching ing." rn lot of lea I will be mechanic, rider, and truck driver for this motorcycle experiment. Having only the smallest amount of racing experience means I will be doing a lot of learning, both from my own experience and from the experts I have tapped to help make sure I do not completely fail. My one and only race was a year ago at the Barber Vintage Festival where I raced in Vintage Cross Country with a yappy late-'70s Yamaha YZ125. Immediately after the race I sold the bike to a friend, but racing had set its hook deep enough in me that simply daydream about ripping berms and late-braking turn two couldn't satisfy me: I started doing research and laying a plan to make it happen. I'll be reading the appropriate rule books and attending a riding school to hone my skills for the tasks to come. The first tasks are mechanical, though; the bike needs to be repaired from its last outing, during which it dropped a valve and demolished the cylinder head, and built to withstand the coming year. It's a crazy plan, one that will require a lot of wrenching and a lot of learning- all of which I'll be sharing with you on this site. For now, I'm going to turn up the thermostat in the garage and get to work. In a few weeks, I'll update you on the XR's progress and give you the details on how I'm preparing this machine for the litany of abuse it's about to face. After all, racing doesn't start on the start lineit starts in the garage. I've been posting regular updates via articles on Hagerty. com/media and here in AHRMA MAG, or look for me in the paddock at the next AHRMA event you are at. Come say hi and share your story or advice. 48

CHAMPIONS CROWNED

Making History Cecil Sandford made history as the first rider to win a World Championship riding an MV Agusta. Now, at the age of 91, he is motorcycling’s oldest-surviving World Champion and still has vivid memories of Grand Prix racing in the 1950s.

n Wednesday, June 11th, 1952, Cecil Sandford started something very big. He scored the first World Championship race victory for MV Agusta, the marque that went on to become the most successful manufacturer in Grand Prix racing, with 275 race wins and 75 Rider and Constructor world titles. Even now, almost half a century after By MickMV’s last race, only Honda, YaOfield maha, and Aprilia have achieved more Grand Prix success. Two months after Sandford took MV’s first classic win in the Ultra-Lightweight TT, he clinched the 125cc World Championship, MV’s first. Five years later he won his second World Championship, in the 250cc class, with rival Italian brand Mondial. During his 15-year career, the Gloucestershire, England rider had factory contracts with AJS, Velocette, MV, DKW, and Mondial. He raced against Geoff Duke, John Surtees, and Mike Hailwood,

undreds of racers from North America and other parts of the world converged on Daytona International Speedway to compete for race wins and National Championships at the 36th annual Championship Cup Series (CCS) Race of Champions, featuring the final rounds of the AMA-sanctioned American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) National Sprint and Team Challenge series. On the line were eight National Championships in the ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire, decided by points accumulated over a seven-round season; four National Championships in the ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire, decided by points accumulated during an eight-round season; and 54 CCS National Championships, which were decided by winner-take-all sprint races. The Race of Champions also included two MotoGirlGT exhibition races, featuring only female competitors. After a full day of mostly dry practice time and the Team Hammer Advanced Riding School on Friday, racing began in wet conditions on Saturday; the track dried out later in the afternoon and

Former Moto2 World Championship rider and 2008 125cc Grand Prix World Championship runner-up Simone Corsi rode a Pirelli-fitted Squid Hunter Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 in the ASRA Team Challenge race as part of a last-minute deal put together as a possible precursor to a Daytona 200 effort. The 32-year-old Italian took the overall lead on lap 30 of the race and turned laps as quick as 1:53.485 to pull away and claim the overall and GTU class victories by 13.869 seconds. “I love this track,” Corsi said in English from the podium. “The race was very difficult, but I enjoy it very much. I want to thank my team. They did a great job.” West Side Performance’s Christian Miranda, age 19, raced closely with Corsi but fell behind after the first and only round of pit stops. Miranda, however, held on to finish second overall and in the GTU class on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Series regular Lloyd Bay-

ley finished third overall and first in the GTO category on his BMW S1000RR. Jinba Ittai Motorsport’s Joel Lenk crossed the finish line fourth overall and second in the GTO class, and that was enough to claim the 2019 ASRA Team Challenge Overall and GTO Championships. Jinba Ittai Motorsport edged out seven-time ASRA Team Challenge Champion Grease Monkey Racing (Eric Helmbach/Stephen Hoffman) for both titles. Grease Monkey Racing finished the race sixth overall and third in GTO. JoeyO Racing (Robert Bettencourt/Sean Osowski) took 18th overall and won in the GT Lights category on a Yamaha FZ07, while fourth place in the GT Lights division was enough for Racing 101 (Doug Stufflebeam/ Gino Angella/Mark Evry/Joseph Ciesnik) to secure the GT Lights Team Challenge Championship. The Team Challenge race was originally scheduled to run for 55 laps, but a crash in the chicane

Roger Morissette (60) took first place in CCS GT Lights and CCS Moto3 Expert on his Suzuki SV650.

Britain’s greatest riders of all time. And he won the race in which Hailwood made his debut, at Oulton Park in April, 1957. “Surtees was one of the best riders I ever watched,” recalls Sandford, a chipper nonagenarian with an amazing memory for the first decade of motorcycle World Championship racing. “And Duke was always a step ahead. He was the only bloke I ever saw drift a motorbike, at Monza.” Sandford started racing as a teenager, just after the Second World War, after converting his Triumph road bike for scrambling, trials, and grass-track duties. Next came road racing, usually at disused wartime bases like Haddenham, Dunholme, and Blandford Forum. He made his TT debut in the 1948 Clubmans Junior, although he very nearly didn’t make it to the Isle of Man. “We were taking my Velocetteto Douglas from Liverpool, with me, my mum and my dad in an MG with the Velo on a trailer.
