Well, it’s exciting to see the 2021 AHRMA racing season in full swing. Last year’s struggles, cancelations and disappointments are a distant memory. The weather has thrown a few surprises at some of the events, the cold temps at Roebling and Carolina Motorsports Park, the rain at Desoto Motorsports Park and the wind at Big Willow. It’ll take more than that to discourage the dedicated AHRMA faithful. We’ll take all this momentum into our first Classic MotoFest at Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka and create one heck of a ruckus in Kansas. Hopefully, this event will be a big draw for spectators and future AHRMA members. A great big ‘thank you’ to everyone involved in the planning and prep. We also hope this issue makes it to our members before the big weekend (if the USPS...). The May issue has been a challenge due to the amount of content and last-minute changes and delays. As always, we appreciate the contributions of the race reporters and photographers. Unfortunately, we had to hold our coverage of White Lightning until the June issue in an effort to do it justice. Apologies to all those who have been looking forward to seeing White Lightning splashed on the magazine pages. The Joes haven’t made a race yet this season and my son has been grumblin’ about all work and no play for the past couple of weeks. My new building has been keeping both of us too occupied to race, but things are starting to come together so maybe we’ll get a few more races in this season, starting with MotoFest. We sure miss the racing, our AHRMA family and making all the off-track memories. And the roadrace track at Heartland is a blast to ride, so there’s that. The AHRMA MAG is always looking for special interest stories, particularly on the off-road side. I’m plugged into the roadrace scene, so I don’t have quite the same connections or opportunities to find good off-road content, although we are planning to make it to an off-road event (or two) this year to spectate and mingle. My racing life began in the dirt; I raced off-road for 25 years, and I miss it. If you have a lead on anything of interest, send it our way. Our ‘My Garage’ feature tank is running on empty so if you have an interesting hangout or an even more interesting collection of two- or three-wheeled iron, we can help you share it with the membership. The AHRMA MAG could use a few more race reporters. If there’s an event missing in an issue of the magazine it’s because there was no coverage. We don’t always have articles for certain disciplines at off-road events and sometimes need a person to cover roadrace weekends. If you would like to volunteer your services, AHRMA MAG and the readers would appreciate it. You don’t need a degree in journalism, heck, you don’t even need to worry about spelling, grammar and punctuation—we will handle that. AHRMA Dirt Track WANTS YOU! In recent years, the American sport of motorcycle dirt track racing has blossomed. However, AHRMA's DT program has lagged behind, in large part, this was due to an ineffective business model. Beginning last October, we began to form plans designed to
6
WWW.AHRMA.ORG
invigorate our DT series. It took lots of time, some money, and some diplomacy to make these plans a reality. AHRMA's Dirt Track Program will burst onto the scene for the second half of 2021. There will be a host of changes and exciting new venues. We will be renting race tracks and promoting events ourselves so that AHRMA classes get the top billing they deserve. Our sign-up and scoring processes will benefit from tech upgrades. There are plans in place to enhance our media and social media presence, exposing us to more potential racer-members. In addition to our traditional classes, there will be Director's Choice classes for popular old and not-quiteas-old bikes. These classes will have relaxed eligibility requirements, designed to engage racers who are not yet AHRMA members. We will host short track and TT at most events. By the way, we have negotiated some of the TTs to be 'open traction' events (bring on those knobbies). As much as we love racing motorcycles, it's always a little better in front of lots of fans. To this point, check out where we will be racing beginning as
soon as this June. Oour calendar will be fully updated soon. We will race all around the USA: Sturgis, SD, (during the big Rally), Perris and Lake Elsinore, CA, (of 'On Any Sunday' fame), COTA in Texas (the big RoT Rally), Ashtabula, OH, Georgia Practice Facility, and of course, the Henryetta, OK, season finale. More good news is that AHRMA's good friend, David Aldana, will be staying on as AHRMA's Dirt Track Ambassador. Roadrace director Alex Mock will assume the duties of DT event promoter, with off-road director, Tony Paul, overseeing the necessary business items behind the scenes. It is our intent to improve financial viability, increase press coverage, have bigger classes, increase AHRMA membership, draw more spectators and offer better awards. What can you do to help assure our success? • Bring out those old bikes and enter an AHRMA DT (or two). • Encourage your buddies to do the same. • Volunteer to work a stint at the track (tech, flag, set-up, tear-down, etc.) • Contact AHRMA through the contact form on ahrma.org with questions or offers to volunteer. I thank all those who have helped in this major transition, and to those who will answer the call to help us succeed. – Arthur Kowitz AHRMA Chairman of the Board 386.547.9504 dbsuperbiker@gmail.com

So many good things in motion... As I sit at Willow Springs Raceway amongst many AHRMA friends, it reminds me of what a ride the past two years have been. 2019 was indeed a transition year with all the changes thrust upon our organization. 2020 was supposed to be a turn-around year in many aspects, but the challenges of COVID altered that plan. However, with the 2021 season well under way there are so many good things in motion for our members and disciplines. There are still fine tuning and adjustments to be made, but the momentum is on our side. With the inaugural AHRMA Classic MotoFest at Heartland Park just around the corner, we have been full-steam ahead with promotions. Jim Doyle has taken on a monumental task as the Event Coordinator. Paul Elledge has moved us into the modern age with his AHRMA branding campaign and social media exploits. Bob Demetrius has led the charge on AHRMA marketing. Vikki Leonard has taken over the AHRMA Merchandising efforts. All Fields Sports Marketing (AFS) are handling our MotoFest corporate sponsorships and MotoFest sales efforts. Amy Jacques continues with road race class sponsorships. And, by the time you read this, I hope to have a Sales/Business Development professional in place to head up AHRMA MAG advertising sales, off-road disciplines and event sponsorships. So why does a member-owned, not-for-profit organization need this level of marketing effort? Well, with a $1.5M annual budget, AHRMA has been sustaining but not flourishing. With the exception of the Benevolent Fund, we have not been growing our reserves. We are also at risk of burning out many volunteers who invest lots of hours and money out of their own pockets for the organization. In short, we can do so much more for our members if we have more money to work with. To better manage and recognize AHRMA’s volunteer efforts, Lewis Leonard has taken on the task of Volunteer Coordinator. Also, Lisi Bratcher has come on board to help my office with the administration/ bookkeeping transaction load. Originally from Austria, Lisi brings industry experience with a racing background and actually working for the KTM factory in their Marketing Department. Also, Dewanna Comer is back on board with various marketing, MotorsportReg, and admin tasks as needed. With all of the initiatives across AHRMA currently in process, Cindy McLean’s responsibilities have been adjusted so she can better concentrate on AHRMA’s website, communications and membership management. Alex Mock is now fully engulfed in AHRMA’s road race program and participation is up. Faynisha Pentecost is staying on board with rider services for road racers related to MotorsportReg. Tony Paul continues to lead the charge with the off-road disciplines. Our Dirt Track program is going through a transformation, expanding in to other areas of the country and visiting some high-profile venues. There are initiatives in place to ease the machine eligibility restrictions so more can take advantage of this growing segment within AHRMA. David Aldana’s role has been elevated to that of “AHRMA Ambassador” whereby he can attract even more visibility for our Dirt Track and other programs. We have dipped our toes into the concept of self-promoted off road events at Cahuilla Creek in California and White Lightning in South Carolina. Definitely a learning curve here with some winners and losers

However, the goals are the same as with all our endeavors—to provide the best possible “member experience” racing on appropriate tracks for each era we represent. Additionally, AHRMA has several strong and successful regions running their own off-road championships. These serve as good opportunities for those members who don’t chase National Championships and are the direct result of the efforts of our Regional Coordinators. So, many thanks to all those individuals who make it all happen. We’re gaining traction with our financial strength, membership growth, race entries and just plain fun! Thanks everyone for what you are doing! See you at the races… One-AHRMA – Curtis E. Comer AHRMA Executive Director 931.308.0338 curt.comer@ahrma.org

CAROLINA MOTORSPORTS PARK 2021 Bridgestone Tires AHRMA National Historic Cup Roadracing Series

The AHRMA circus returned to Carolina Motorsports Park (AKA: Kershaw) for the 2nd round of the 2021 Bridgestone Tires AHRMA National Historic Cup Roadracing series. For me, this was feeling a bit like round one at Roebling Road—a 14+ hour drive from Wisconsin dreaming about warm summer breezes and hot racing action—only to find very ‘Yankee’ weather eerily similar
to the wet and cold elements from the prior round down south. Kershaw was only about a dozen cheese curds away from being annexed by Wisconsin. For me personally, my journey south of the Mason Dixon line was sparked by chasing points in the NYC Norton/Roadracing World 500 Premiere Vintage Cup. I had never been to Roebling,

and this was only my second time to Kershaw, the last being in 2005. Despite the cold, the track was actually much better and even more fun than I remembered. The pavement surface was nearly perfect, and the prior ‘mickey mouse’ back section made up of tight 90-degree corners was replaced with a unique and beautiful decreasing radius sweeper. I took my SOT3 Buell XB9 out in practice on Friday, and I had suffered enough Wisconsin beverage-induced brain cell deaths over the last 16 years that it was like learning a new track for me. I slowly progressed from getting in way too hot to the nicely banked turn eight, and not hot enough into the sweeping turn ten, to turning lap times just short of slightly embarrassing with the fun meter pegged. This track was a riot and throws a little bit of everything at you. I was not alone in the learning department, as Mark Morrow MAY 2021
and the AHRMA instructors had their hands full with a respectable grid of 23 new students! Stellar turnout, and welcome to AHRMA! My Race Weekend After getting our butts handed to us at Roebling Road in the 500 Premiere Vintage Cup by Tony Read and his Rob Hall/Andy Findling-built and tuned BSA, I convinced my builder/tuner Dale Coffman to come down south with me and to bring the Seely-framed Honda CR450 ‘A’ bike (can’t be the rider, right?). I felt instantly comfortable on the bike, and despite the cool temperatures, began working my times down. The bike was performing well as I slowly brought the pace up testing the cool pavement for grip—although there unfortunately were a ton of red flags in both practice and racing. I never experienced an issue on the Premier bike although I was being very conservative. Racing the AHRMA Vintage cup—Saturday Saturday dawned cool and overcast, luckily, we were in race seven so there was a bit of time to warm up (warm may be too strong a word since checking on my phone, my hometown of Milwaukee was warmer than Kershaw by a few degrees). I really had to dial my stoke level down in the conditions; after a month of

thinking about my poor showing at Roebling, I really wanted to try and ride well. I got a decent start, but Jerry Duke on his Ducati got an awesome start and I just barely snuck by going into the treacherously narrow turn one. I tagged along with Formula 500 competitors Mark Morrow and Bob Demetrius hoping they would pull me with them, but the race was immediately red flagged. Unfortunately, it involved my fellow Vintage Cup competitors n the carnage at turn one, and neither Helmi on his NYC Norton G50 or my main points rival, Tony Read, and his BSA were able to restart. I got away decent at the re-start beating Jerry and Dave Roper to turn one (okay, yeah, they are on 350s, so I had an unfair advantage), and again found myself in close quarters 12

on track with Bob and Mark. Knowing my main competitor was on the sidelines, I took a conservative approach to the race and tried to hang with Mark, but he crept a few yards away gapping me every lap, while I, in turn, put a small gap on Bob (again, on a 350). I ended up with a win, but it felt a bit hollow due to the carnage, and I was gutted for Tony and his team. Dave Roper added to his enormous record of podiums with a fine second on his AJS, and Jerry put his Duc on the box in third. AHRMA Vintage Cup—Sunday Due to the cold temperatures and the fact I felt like I had figured out the track enough to race on it, we decided to not practice and preserve the Coffman

Honda 450 for when it counted, knowing Tony would be back in full force. I was anxious to race, and my plan was to ride as well as I could and let the chips fall where they may; it would be a long drive back to Wisconsin self-critiquing my riding if I didn’t give it my best. We had a full complement of Vintage cup bikes on the grid for Sunday and both Tony and Helmi had gotten their bikes back into race shape. Starting from pole, I got a clean start and the whole pack made it through turn one in good shape. Again, I soon found myself with Mark on his RD ahead of me and Bob on his Honda hot on my tail. As we crossed the finish line to complete the first lap, I glanced over and saw Tony on the side of the track with a mechanical. A lot of empathy—I have certainly been there before. For a brief moment, I considered riding conservatively as we had a comfortable gap on the rest of the bikes in my class, but all apologies to my owner/mechanic/tuner and dear friend Dale, but I had to abuse the old girl a bit and see if we could put in some good laps. I had the perfect ‘rabbit’ ahead of me in professor Morrow and had a great time racing with him and staying as close as I could, setting my best personal lap time on the Honda at CMP. Dave took another second place, while Helmi finished a fine third on his beautiful G50. Chasing Mark was almost my undoing however, as the bike kept popping out of gear, and if not for a red flag-shortened race I am not sure we would have completed the last lap. The transmission locked up fully on the cool down lap! The fuse was just long enough…

And that’s a wrap for my weekend. Took two wins but honestly there is an asterisk next to them without Tony in the race. It’s a long season and I know Tony and his team will come back swinging at Topeka, as well as all the other racers who are licking their wounds after CMP. On the plus side, we had a great time with our AHRMA friends, met some new ones, got to race with legend (and my personal hero) Dave Roper, and had some super fun on-track battles with my buddies Bob and Mark. I guess in the end, that’s what AHRMA is all about. That 14-hour drive home wasn’t so bad after all. In Other Action… By: Joe W. The battle for third in Saturday’s 200GP race was one to watch as Don Hollingsworth, Mitch Barnes and Stuart Sanders were within a second of each other, Hollingsworth getting across the line first to grab that third podium spot. John Scales and Jonas Stein kept it interesting in Sunday’s 200GP in their clash for second place, Scales a wheel ahead of Stein at the checkers. There were several other squeakers. Sound of Thunder 2 was another close dash to the finish. Clint Autin won, but Seth Starnes and Gary Orr were separated by just .2 seconds, Starnes just edging Orr. Alex McLean won the 350GP race with second through fourth a nail biter. Jonathan Hollingsworth took second, Jerry Duke third and Dave Roper fourth—all three within a second or two of each other at the line. Jake Hall, Mike Baker and John Rickard were tied together at the finish on Sunday, separated by just .8 seconds. In Modern TT2 sidecar action, Tony and Lisa Doukas traded wins with Dale and Milan Lavendar. They made it interesting, Lavender over Doukas by a whisker on Sunday. Ralph Staropoli Won Open Two-Stroke on Sunday, but the two guys chasing him were in a fracas that ended with David Crussell edging Greg Glevicky for second place. And then there were riders who just had it going on all weekend, twisting their throttles to wins in three or more races. Hats off to the following multi-podium AHRMA riders: Clint Austin (Thuxton Cup Challenge, Sound of Thunder 1, Sound of Thunder 2, Battle of the Twins 2); Jim Padron (Next Gen Superbike 2, Formula Thunder, Sound of Thunder 1); Ralph Staropoli (Sound of Singles 2, Sound of Singles 3, Open Two-stroke); Paul Elledge (Motard, Sound

The weekend was ‘prolonged’ by an unusual number of red flags. Turn one seemed unforgiving and claimed its share of contestants. Check out The Headmaster’s column in this issue to see Mark Morrow’s take on warm-up laps. May be some connection there. Mark is a seasoned competitor and runs the AHRMA Academy of Roadracing. We hope everyone has recovered from the bumps and bruises, scrapes and scratches. Well, the wordcount meter needle’s in the red so time to wrap this up. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to the AHRMA staff and especially all the amazing volunteers who toil tirelessly so we can fill our weekends with memorable experiences.

One area of both safety and performance that is often overlooked, is the warm-up lap. The warm-up lap is seen by some as simply the process to get to their grid and start the race, but there is so much more going on than just getting to the grid! For starters, the warm-up lap is your final opportunity to observe the track conditions. How bad is the oil dry in that corner where the CBX blew up? If it’s wet, is there a dry line forming? Any puddles/rivers that will require a different line? Any changes to the runoff in any of the corners? How is that rough pavement that was starting to come up in practice? Whenever you take your warm-up lap, you should always have at least half an eyeball open for these things. Even more important, the warm-up lap is your only chance to get heat in your tires. If you run tire warmers, they are at least half warm before you start your warm-up lap, but they still need some good acceleration, braking and cornering forces to get them fully warm. Tires get heat from carcass deformation, not swerving (NEVER swerve on a warm-up lap!) or burnouts, but good old-fashioned accelerating, braking and cornering. If you drone around on your warm-up lap at 50% pace and don’t give it some full throttle, brake hard and corner fast, you won’t put very much heat in the tires and will be starting the race at a disadvantage compared to someone who did. You will also be at risk going into turn one on the start without enough heat in your tires and losing the front. Of course, blazing out of the pits on cold tires at full race pace isn’t the answer either; that will put you on the ground in a heartbeat. You have to exercise a little judgment. The answer is planning a progressive out lap, where you steadily increase your pace every corner until you are at or very nearly close to full race pace by the time you get to the final turn. When you leave the pits, GET ON THE GAS! This shifts the weight to the rear, distorting the rear tire and immediately starts putting some heat into it. Next, as you approach the first turn, BRAKE FIRMLY! This will transfer weight to the front, distorting the front tire. Brake firmly, but only in a straight line. Trail braking should be reserved until after your tires are 100% up to temperature! Next, turn the bike and don’t worry too much about hanging off. Staying straight with the bike makes it lean more compared to hanging off and that extra lean angle will put a little more heat in the tires. For sure, your first corner should be at a reduced pace, but you MAY 2021
would be surprised at how much grip even a cold tire actually has. I’m not advocating anything crazy, just keep in mind that the faster you go and the farther you lean, the more heat you put into the tire. Pick a conservative pace for the first turn, but gradually increase it every corner you hit, hopefully arriving at 90-95% pace by the time you reach the final corner. One factor to remember is that even though ANY distortion will heat the tire overall, right-hand turns focus heat on the right side of the tire and left-hand turns focus the heat on the left side. If you are at a track like Laguna Seca, it’s difficult to get a lot of heat into the right side of the tire due to how few right-hand turns there are. Last year, it was cold and the majority of the crashes all weekend were on the first lap, in turn four, which is the first right-hand turn on the track. Likewise, if you are at CMP, the opposite is true as there are only four left-hand turns out of 14 there. At CMP this year, there were a LOT of crashes and red flags. Over 90% were in either turn one or turn eleven, both left-hand turns that have a long time spent on straights and rights in between them. Those who didn’t crash in turn one, mostly crashed in turn eleven because it’s a hard braking turn and there are six right-hand turns and the two longest straights on the track in between turn four and turn eleven. All of that time off the left side of the tire allowed it to cool off, requiring a more cautious approach on the brakes. Tracks like CMP, TGPR and Laguna Seca often require MORE than one lap to get tires fully up to temperature, especially when it is cold. The final thing to remember about the warm-up lap is that it is your last chance to get “in the game” mentally. Maybe you’re worried about a problem at work, a fight with a loved one or even whether you remembered to turn off the stove before you left. The warm-up lap is the time to put all of that out of your mind and start thinking about the RACE! Whatever is bothering you in the “real” world will still be there waiting for you when you get off the track. Clear your mind of any distractions and shift your focus to lean angles, braking markers, available grip and race strategy. Things happen SO fast during a race, the last thing you want is the distraction of worrying about some domestic problem while you are out there racing! Stay safe!!
Headmaster P.S. Correction on previous article! Please note there was an error in the graphic provided with my last article. It stated incorrectly that passing is not allowed under a "Stationary Yellow." Race pace and passing are still allowed in this instance, caution and alertness is key.

A self-promoted AHRMA National, in the Southwest Region (Southern California), was a shot in the dark since AHRMA member turnout with co-hosted events in the past have been light. However, the crew put in months of planning and hard work that ultimately paid off, and the event was a success. As most events, there is always room for improvement and our team is aware of those and after several discussions with the track owners, who now understand what we need in order to grow this event, I feel we are set to have a bigger and better outcome along with a more vintage-friendly MX track for 2022. The event kicked off on a chilly Saturday morning with trials competition. Trialmaster, Morgan Proffitt, set up a wonderful trial with sections laid out in the rocky and hilly terrain of Anza, California. The sections were fun, vintagefriendly, yet challenging, for our upper-level riders such as Ralph Foster taking five points on the day and Matt Parsons with 10. 35 riders competed in the trial. Winners of the day’s event included: Premier Heavyweight Expert – Matt Parsons; Premier Heavyweight Intermediate – Michael Miller; Premier Lightweight Expert – Robert Belliciti; Prem Lightweight Intermediate – Tyrus Wilson; Classic Expert – Joe Klokkevold; Classic Intermediate – John Hart; Modern Classic Master - Ralph Foster; Modern Classic Expert – AMERICAN HISTORIC RACING MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION

The course consisted of wide-open fast desert style sand woops, big, bermed corners and tight single track through the brush and even a couple tight, hard/easy split sections through some rocks laid out by Off-road Director, Anthony Paul. Cross Country is split into two separate races one being Vintage Cross Country pre1974 machines and all Women classes Post Vintage included, and all Novice classes Post Vintage included, followed by our Post Vintage Expert and Intermediate classes.

The Making of
Cahuilla Creek
a New AHRMA National Event By: Terry McPhillips I always knew there was a lot of work putting on an event, but I was surprised by the amount of effort that goes into it even after attending several and thinking I had an idea of what it took to make it happen. The Cahuilla Creek National event included Trials, Cross Country and MX of all forms in a single weekend, March 6th and 7th. AHRMA had events at Cahuilla Creek MX several years ago with VMX, PVMX and Trials. People kept asking, “When are we going to race at Cahuilla Creek again?” So, when a few SW Regional folks volunteered to help with the Trials, Cross Country, and MX, and with Curt Comer and Tony Paul’s support planning this event back in November, I figured we had plenty of time to get everything in place and ready to go. This event would be one of the first in recent Off-Road history where AHRMA would be the promoter!
Cross Country Course and Trials Section Layout: There were a lot of folks who met with us to set up the trials event to make certain it was worthwhile for those attending. Many Zoom meetings were held for this. I especially appreciated this input as I am a Trials newbie without a clue what would have been required otherwise. These meetings included requirements for running, layout and the other things necessary to conduct an event of this diversity. Pat Wilkenings (Patch Wookie) was the primary contact for setting up the Cross Country layout. Morgan Proffitt was the Trialmaster. Pat, Luke Sayer (trustee), Morgan and I converged to set up the locations for Cross Country and Trials in advance. This required multiple trips to Cahuilla prior to the 26
WWW.AHRMA.ORG
When we convened and listed what needed to be done, it was a surprise to me. The list became longer and longer the more we talked. Thanks to all the Regional Coordinators and Off-Road Director for putting together a checklist of the many things required to make any MX event happen (along with Brian Oakley who gave us a copy of the checklist he put together for his Louisiana event as a starting place!).
Overall Coordination, initial planning and preparation: There were many folks who were involved in the process of putting this into place. Tony Paul, our Off-Road Director, was the point of contact for everything that went on. He contacted the track owners, getting the dates, venues and contracts set up initially. He also set up the requirements for an on-site ambulance for both days (Saturday’s Trials and Cross Country events and Sunday’s VMX, PVMX and Next Gen events). He followed up on insurance procurement, not to mention all the other required contractual stuff.
event in order to see what was available, and to determine the best possible layouts for both the Cross Country route and the Trials sections. Pat, Tony and Jeff Bushey set up the final Cross Country route and Morgan and Luke set up the actual Trials sections with Matt Parsons in charge of two sections. Rob Poole and Matt Parsons arrived in advance of the event to offer their suggestions, as prior Trialmasters, with ideas to make the trials sections better. Marketing: Pat Wilkening and Kerri Kress devoted many hours creating a flyer for the event. It was outstanding and featured Joel Robert. Cindy McLean was a huge help in making sure that the National and AHRMA Southwest websites were up to date.

Cindy also sent a number of things to us that we didn’t even think about. We received all the support we could ask for from the AHRMA National Office. Kelly Shane put together an awesome t-shirt to commemorate the event! If you didn’t get one, contact Tony Paul. We had several people volunteer their time to get the word out. Flyers were dropped off at many of the local businesses that work with motorcycles in any manner in Southern California! Many of the local motorcycle clubs in the area were contacted. We also spoke to some of the local vintage organizations who shared our flyers on their websites, Facebook pages or email lists. They made sure all the members not only knew about the event but requested their attendance. This included Old School Scrambles Racing Group (Tami Greenhill), CalVMX (Frank Vettras) and the Socal BSA Owners Club.

Equipment: Lance Brown stepped up and was all in, lending us the large amount of equipment needed to hold the event, including the PA System, hand-held radios, flags, race results board, On Track/Staging Tree, and so much more! Luke’s toy hauler was overloaded with all the stuff Lance loaned us!
Awards: Morgan Proffitt created the trophies for the Trials event. The 3D printing for the trophies was really pretty cool. Pat Wilkening created the awards for the Cross Country and MX events with help from his wife, Kerry Kress. They did a great job on the awards!
Vendors: Pat and Tony jumped in to make sure we had a food truck on site. This was more difficult than it sounded as Cahuilla is a pretty remote location. They finally found Common Grounds Coffee. Common Grounds had a pretty extensive menu, and the portions were pretty large! If you didn’t get some of their food, you missed out (not to mention the gourmet coffee drinks!). It would be great to have them back in the future. One addition was getting Pauly Chambers Photography on site. This was a very last-minute addition since we were unable to find a photographer. Pauly contacted us the last week to offer this service. We are extremely thankful that he did. Great pictures were taken! This is another vendor we wish to have join us next year. Chris Todd, the Western Tech Chief from Kansas helped with

making certain we had everything needed to run the technical inspections for both Cross Country and Motocross.
Event: A number of people showed up days in advance to set up all the preparations for an event like this. Some of the preparation included: • Putting up canopies for registration, Cross Country start/finish line, MX scoring • Setting up sponsor and AHRMA banners • Setting up signs and tables for registration, membership and technical inspection • Erecting directional signs for the pits • Setting up markers for the Cross Country and Trials events These sound like simple things but are surprisingly time consuming. There were many posts that had to be manned during the running of the event. We were fortunate enough to have many volunteers who filled these positions as they came up. Most of the positions were expected, but a couple of unexpected items did come up, like manning the gate after hours and collecting the gate and camping fees. We can’t begin to tell the volunteers how much we appreciate their efforts to make things happen. (Making sure the port-a-potties had TP was one of the least glamorous tasks. Thanks Russ and Pat!) Probably three of the most critical tasks were registration, membership and scoring. Tony Paul took care of the primary duties for these with help from volunteers. The one exception was the Trials scoring, which Morgan Proffitt, as Trialmaster, took care of.
Lessons Learned: Even after the event concluded there was work to do. Although we were happy with the initial turnout, there were a number of things that were identified in a post-event meeting that need to be improved for the next race being held at Cahuilla. This included the following: • Reduce the “jumpiness” of the track for the Vintage bikes. There have already been conversations with the track prep folks on how to either eliminate or bypass this. They watched the race and understood our requirements for this. • Move the food vendor closer to registration for visibility • More and better marketing of the event • Adjust the difficulty of the Trials sections • More trials loop arrows to make it easier to find the trials sections • Better scheduling of registration and events so there are no conflicts, or have enough personnel assigned to cover both simultaneously. • Be more specific, in advance, of which positions will be covered by who and for what timeframes. • Start the planning process earlier. 28
WWW.AHRMA.ORG
There are a whole host of other things that we are also looking at as information is collected and acted upon where appropriate. We’re taking all comments and considering what we can do to make this the best event possible.
Results: We were extremely happy with how it went based on the fact that this was the first time that many of us were involved in setting up and running an event of this size and complexity! We’ll consider what worked and didn’t and improve for next year! Overall, we think this was a great first step in what we hope will be an annual event! Final results were as follows:
• Trials 40 entries • Cross Country 45 entries • VMX/PVMX/NextGen 119 entries • New Members 21 new members were signed up!
Thanks:
Keep in mind this event was put together and run primarily by unpaid volunteers! Without these people, none of this would have been even remotely possible. If you want to see more and better events, get involved! Volunteers are always needed at each and every event! Our thanks go out to the following people who were instrumental in making this event a success: • Tony Paul provided all track, insurance, ambulance contract requirements, communications with all parties and leadership. When in doubt, Tony had the answers! Southwest Core Team—overall planning, set-up: • Luke Sayer—Trustee provided overall planning, leadership and much, much more • Pat Wilkening—Cross Country set-up • Morgan Proffitt—Trialmaster • Russ Heck • Pete Hughes • John Hart

PART 2 OF 2
THE RETURN TO:
4SR AHRMA NATIONAL VINTAGE DIRT TRACK SERIES
OCALA, FL MARCH. 20, 2021
BY: RICHARD BRODOCK / PHOTOS BY: DRAGAN HOOLIGAN HARBOV
To start the day, this quarter-mile dirt oval has been modified to add a TT track in the infield. A TT track consists of at least one right-hand turn and one jump. Long, fast straightaways and tight turns made this TT a tricky one with some close bar-to-bar action. With all AHRMA classes combined into two races for the TT, David Aldana, Charlie Williams, Henry Sansing, Beino Rodi, and Richard Brodock lined up for the green flag in race one and Beno Rodi and Preston Palmer lined up for a Brakeless race two. A mad rush into turn one put Aldana out front with Williams close on his tail. Right behind them Sansing and me were neck-and-neck as we came over the jump into a tight right-hand turn. For several laps Aldana and Williams battled it out until a rider went down in turn, one bringing out a red flag. To top it all off, Aldana had ripped the rear brake line from his bike and cracked his exhaust which now hung by safety wire. A staggered restart with three laps to go, and we go green again. Coming off the TT back onto the main track, Aldana’s exhaust lets loose and flies off in turn three, but clear from the riding line. With Charlie hot on his heels, David can’t slow down. White flag out last lap, and Charlie gives one more run off turn four to try to beat Aldana to the finish line coming up just short. I missed a shift coming out of the tight lefthand turn back on the oval track allowing Sansing to grab several bike lengths before we crossed the finish line. As the rest of the riders take the checker, we head to the pits to get ready for the short track. 30

After the dust settled from the TT rounds, the riders took a short break to relax and let the track crew prep the surface for the Round five short track. With banked turns and a small groove, this track would make for tight, fast racing. First race up put Aldana and Williams on the line accompanied by Paul Lampman and yours truly. The green flag flies, and we’re off into turn one, wide open. Coming out of two, Aldana loses the rear wheel. I barely miss him as David comes to a stop sliding just shy of the guardrail. A little too close for comfort. A complete restart with Aldana on the back line allowed Williams a good run into one and he never looked back, taking the win. On the last lap, I was in fourth (first in my class) behind Lampman. Down the backstraight, I run hard into turn three passing Lampman and taking third overall. As the Sportsman 250 class takes to the track, Sansing and I lined up next to each other yet again. Coming into this round, both tied up in the championship points, we both know how important the win would be here. With Henry taking the win on the TT track, I would have to win on the short track to depart with an even point count. For six laps, Sansing leads with me showing him a wheel in every turn and on his rear wheel Edward Allen Jones & Richard Brodock MAY 2021

Bullring Stables down every straight. With two laps to go the racing was even closer. I hung it out in turn one and came out neck-and-neck with Sansing down the back straightaway. Henry pulls a slight lead but leaves the door open in turn three and I ducked underneath and held him off for the win. With a few support classes to catch his breath, Sansing heads back out on the track lining up with Beno Rodi, Preston Palmer and David Coon for a combined Brakeless class.

Off the line, Henry gets a great start on his Ossa and takes the lead. Henry stays out front for most of the race with Coon giving him pressure the whole time. With a few laps left, Coon slipped by Sansing and stayed out front for the overall win and Classic 500/750 class win, Sansing taking the Classic 250 class win, and Palmer taking the Dinosaur class win over Rodi. With two more rounds in the book and some fantastic racing by all, they now pack up and take a few short days off before heading to Baton Rouge for Round six.

Johnny Comer Wins 1960 Alligator Enduro During a recent visit to AHRMA Trustee Beno Rodi’s place, he pulled out a picture of a guy on a Matchless single receiving a trophy for winning the 1960 Alligator Enduro at Daytona. Turns out, the rider was none other than AHRMA Executive Director Curt Comer’s uncle Johnny, his Dad’s brother. Johnny raced enduros from the ‘50s through the mid ‘70s with some successes. A devoted father of two, his career with the Decatur, GA, Police Department included patrolling on a Harley-Davidson three-wheeler. He passed about 15 years ago. Curt actually learned to ride in Johnny’s back yard on his cousin’s Sears Allstate (Gilera) 106cc in 1968. Beno’s dad was an Atlanta Matchless/Indian dealer and most likely Johnny dropped a copy of the picture off at the shop. The setting for the picture was the Matchless/ Indian dealer’s display at the Daytona Armory. Presenting the trophy is Dick Mercier, the East Coast sales rep. The bike Johnny is on appears to be a Matchless G80TCS 600cc single. In the background, on the right, is a G50 factory road racer.

his very fast Triumph 500. With some great racing in the heats, Charlie Williams lined up with Lucien Marioneaux, Mark Zeissler, Jimmy Ewing, Shannon Slocum, and David Aldana for their main. Williams’ Yamaha 500, built by Tim Bolin, put down some fast times and did not allow Aldana and his Honda to get by. Williams picked up a couple wins in Four-stroke Super Singles and Seventies Singles 50+ while David Aldana picked up the win in Sportsman 600 over Ewing and Slocum. After five rounds some of the closest racing has evolved from the Sportsman 250 and Seventies Two-stroke classes with Henry Sansing, me and Mark Zeissler adding to the mix. The heat race really showed the difference between bikes on the bigger track compared to the short tracks. Sansing parking his Rokon for his PDV 250 framer, he was able to get out front in Sportsman 250 making me have to squeeze every ounce out of my Yamaha 175. Working my way through traffic I was able to catch up after a couple laps and found a line I could hold the throttle open through the turns. A few laps later, I managed to get past Sansing to take the win. In the Seventies Two-stroke class, Zeissler took a commanding lead and never looked back on his Bultaco 250, finishing ahead of me and Sansing. With more than a dozen Bultacos lined up in the pits, it was no surprise that Charlie Roberts and the Class of ‘79 was there as well as some current pro dirt

track racers, Dalton Guthie, Morgan Michler, and Brandon Kitchen. Combining AHRMA’s new Spanish Cup and Roberts’ Astro cup, it made for a great showing of the ever-popular Bultaco Astro, while Dalton Guthie and Robby-Bobby McLendon walking away with the heat race the main would prove to be a very different but action-packed story. As the green flag dropped, the field left the line, except for Guthie. Starting in the wrong gear left him watching 11 riders pull away, but Dalton quickly found the right gear and got moving. With Charlie Roberts leading the pack down the back straight into turn three, Guthie had his work cut out for him. Roberts, McLendon, and Lance Jones were already crossing the start/finish line as Dalton started down the back stretch. Roberts fought off multiple riders for six laps to stay in the lead. By this time Guthie had not only caught the pack but

had made his way through several riders to find himself in third. The last two laps would prove to be some of the best racing of the day. Guthrie made quick work getting by Jones and pulling side by side with Roberts taking the white flag. Both riders let it all hang out not giving up an inch. Into turn three they went still neck and neck with a pack of four riders right behind them. It was anyone's race. At the line, Guthie pulled off the overall win while Roberts took a close second and the win in the Spanish Cup. Such an epic race was the perfect end to cap a great day at Baton Rouge Raceway. With round six in the books and many championships still very close, AHRMA Dirt Track takes a few weeks off before heading to Aonia Pass outside Atlanta, Georgia, for round seven and eight of its dirt track series.

TOOL BOX TIPS
By Gregg Bonelli
CHASE RACE LEADERS, NOT PROBLEMS AT THE TRACK There is a great deal of useful knowledge that is not being remembered or properly appied. I suppose that could be said about most things, but I say it about your vintage motorcycle here and offer the following illustration. We are racing old bikes, some much older than others. The assumption that what is working is fine and never needs to be replaced can have unfortunate consequences. If it’s a physical part we can see and inspect for cracks, or a moving part that needs lubrication and can be measured for clearances, then we have some methodology available to make a proper evaluation. Still, we may be unaware of the diagnostic tools available.
I went to tech inspection once and the official took the bike, reached in and grabbed the top of the rear wheel and moved it laterally before announcing my swing arm bushings were worn. I was stunned. I knew about bushings and wear and how to replace parts with new ones, but I hadn’t known that simple test. He was right and I was able to replace them before the problem hurt me (or someone else), so I was grateful. But some things are not so amenable to simple inspection. Electrical parts come to mind. A condenser in a points ignition system may look just fine until it fails. Worse yet, a new part may not be good for some unknown reason so it would be prudent to know how to test a part before a potential failure becomes a frustration that costs you a chance to race (the second worst possible time, if you catch my drift). I lost a season due to a faulty CDI and my back-and-forth exchanges with the manufacturer did me no good. I needn’t tell you that in your career you will only make it to the grid so many times, and of those, only so many opportunities will play out as you intended. You increase your chances of enjoying racing by eliminating mechanical and electrical failures before the green flag rather than resorting

to some patch and go plan of dodging problems that result in dire consequences. At the meeting before the Challenger launch one cold Florida morning, a scientist dropped an o-ring in a glass of ice water to demonstrate the potential for failure but those in charge were unpersuaded by its brittle failure. The spectacular results that followed, however, had tragic consequences. If your machine fails you suddenly on the racetrack, in that moment to sort things out you are a hazard to others. For your sake and mine, find and fix your problems in the workshop, not on the track. I will take just one item and demonstrate a simple test to indicate whether the 50-year-old ignition coils on your RD Yamaha need to be replaced. There are other tests for other makes and model, obviously. To take this lesson and apply it to your situation, you must find them yourself and then do what is required. It’s not just science; it’s rocket science. Ignition coils have primary and secondary circuits—windings of wire concealed inside an enclosed case, so no visual inspection. Coils can be reliably tested using a simple multi-tester if you know the specs and how to use the tester. If you don’t have a journal for each machine

you race, you need to create one to list essential specs and readings for every component: Compression for each cylinder; ignition timing settings; jet sizes; replacement dates for electrical/ignition components; tire pressures; gearing for each track with corresponding lap times, etc. I know it’s a constant flow of information which may involve some trial and error, but if you perform your own maintenance and repairs, and there’s no crew chief managing it, then you must be the person responsible. Trusting luck and guesswork are not options. Finally, and perhaps most obviously, if you don’t carry replacement components not readily available, then you may travel a long distance, spend a good deal more money, and still not get to race. I recommend bringing a spare powerplant if you can. That would be the whole setup, carbs, cables, coils and all so if you experience a failure on Saturday, you still have a chance to race on Sunday and salvage some satisfaction from the experience. The chassis will likely survive whatever goes wrong, and space is at a premium, but a box with a powerplant should fit, and you can always sit on it at the campfire. Safe racing.

BURROWS RANCH CC,VMX & TRIALS
BACK TO NORMAL MARCH 20 & 21, 2021
BY: DEBBIE POOLE
Hagerty AHRMA National Cross Country Series Redwood Engineering AHRMA National Vintage Motocross & Trials Series
Cross Country Burrows Ranch cross country has run as a Northwest regional for a number of years, and this was the first year as an AHRMA national. The eight-mile course has a little of everything and starts in the bottom of the little green valley in which much of the ranch is situated, running into the hills that suddenly jut up and roll on to the east, on fire roads and single track. Afternoon cross country riders ran in two separate races, Vintage going first. Sportsman Open Expert, Chet Mauer, took his class win and the overall with a time of 1:05:47. BSA-mounted Kelly Shane was not terribly far behind with a time of 1:07:42, winning the 60+ Expert class. Expert Mickey Sergeant, riding Sportsman 200, had a time of 1:08:24, followed by the first overall intermediate Paul Yarborough—Sportsman Open—at only 13 40

second slower. It was a varied field of 35 competitors on a wide range of bikes from a roaring Triumph Twin ridden by Greg Tomlinson, AHRMA roadracer, in Classic Intermediate, to Ossas, BSAs, Nortons, Husquvarnas and Greeves. It was interesting to note that the Japanese marques were vastly outnumbered by British and European brands. Fifteen Post Vintage riders took to the hills in the second go-round. The top nine finishers completed one more lap than did the top vintage riders. The overall winner, Russ Allen's time was 1:19:50 for the five laps. Russ was also the Open Expert champion for the day. Trials ace, Ralph Foster, has taken a recent liking to cross country, with Burrows ranch being his second AHRMA cross country event ever, taking second overall and winning
his class, 200 Expert. Kelly Shane did double-duty, just dismounting from the BSA in the vintage race, and taking third overall aboard his Can-Am, and first in 60+ Expert. Vintage Motocross The 2021 "rainy season" brought only four inches total to the ranch, and Thursday before the weekend event dropped about another 1/4" to 1/2" more. That sounds like a drop in the ocean, but without it, the Sunday VMX would have been dusty nearly as soon as the first race left the start line. As it were, luck and conditions held until about the lunch break. Riders dealt with the dust and kept their heads; all 15 races and 225 entries ran off with no incidents all day. Kelly Shane continued his busy weekend of riding every event and took the Premier 500 Expert honors ahead of Wyoming's Cliff Mee. Shane had bike trouble in the 60+ Expert class, which was unfortunate. Pat Brown, on the big CCM, and Danny Turner on the CZ, were the show, and it would have been interesting to have Shane in the mix as well. Brown also took the Sportsman Open Twin win ahead of
Washington's Matt James. The Open Age Expert class saw newcomer Ricky Kinney and Wes Poole battle it out in moto one, with Poole dropping out due to engine failure. For moto two, Poole was back on a borrowed bike, courtesy of Kelly Shane, and made the pass on Kinney to win the exciting race, but not the overall win for the day, which went to Kinney with his 1-2 finishes. Second and third were those fast Mauer brothers, Chet and Clay, from Alturas, CA. Almost as large a race as the Open Age Experts were the Open Age Intermediates, dominated by a young man who has been showing very winning ways this season, local rider George Amaro of nearby Willows, CA. Wyatt Montz, also of Willows, and Rick Zeimer, Jr. of Minden, NV, were second and third. Senior Rick Zeimer made his mark in the 60+ Intermediate class, ahead of Rowland Coad of Sparks, NV, and Mike Schaff of Spokane, WA. MAY 2021

Riders traveled from the far north (Idaho, Montana, and yes, Canada), the southwest (AZ), and many points in between. Jacob Ritorto and his son Lucien flew in from Pennsylvania and dad borrowed a bike, while Lucien rode a Montesa trials bike in Sportsman 250 novice! But the one fellow who braved the snow and uncertainty of driving from the frozen north of Minnesota, after years of trying to get to Burrows Ranch and being thwarted every time, was Ron Fredenick, who finished 3-2 for
a second overall in the 50+ Intermediate class. This is what makes AHRMA a very large and widespread family; we thank you all for the effort you make. Plans are in the works for moving the MX track to the eastern side of the valley, where some of the cross country ran. The soil is of a different composition, which holds the moisture better, and we hope to use the area in dryer years. Riders, their families and many spectators were out in force all weekend, certainly giving evidence that at least this little part of California is back to normal after a year of strict inactivity.

Trials The first indication of this were the number of trials entries: 76. The resulting lineup of riders at some sections luckily was sorted out before too long, and then action at all 10 sections hummed along nicely. Nineteen Modern Classic novices made up the largest class, with quite a few first-timers. Lee Cerini, a sleeper no one had seen before, took the class with only a four point loss. He will most certainly feel the need to advance to intermediate soon to keep himself challenged. Cerini was followed by Russ Pfirrman for second, then Emmy Poole, Jeff Crawford and Daniel Sowman. All scores, with the exception of Cerini's, were in the 30- to 40-point range. Modern Classic intermediate entries almost equaled those of the novices, with sixteen. Leader of this pack was Craig Menghini, who kept his score to 24 points. Newcomer Kailie Duncan, riding her fourth trial ever, finished just five points behind Menghini. Third place Willy Krakauer finished just one point behind Duncan; he was followed by Mike Houde, and new intermediate Clay Dawley took 5th. Scores for third through fifth were close, between 30 and 37, indicating a challenging layout, but one that challenged riders equally.

The Modern Classic expert ranks are finally taking off, with nine entrants. Experts ride either the one or the two line, which is indicated at each section. This gives riders an opportunity to work up their skills before moving to the Modern Classic Masters class, who ride the most difficult one line, exclusively. Jason Gitchel was the top expert competitor with a nine-point day. Joe Bill took a second with 14 points, comfortably ahead of fourth place Grant Menghini who had 25. Walt Foster improved greatly after his first loop and secured himself a fourth place. The usual near perfection of Modern Classic Master rider Ralph Foster (14 points) once again won the day over his two much younger competitors, Wes Poole and Tanner Kane. The Premier classes were well-attended, as they always are at Burrows Ranch. The Heavyweight Experts were dominated by Matt Parsons, who lost six points all day. Lightweight Experts were led by Bob Belliccitti with eleven points, and then Mike Atkins for second with 33 points. Bryan Wenzel overtook the Lightweight Intermediates with a five-point loss, over second place Larry Cerini with 21. Charlie Higdon just missed the second-place spot by two points and settled for third. Mike Nadeker was the winner of the Lightweight novice class.

MID-ATLANTIC REGION

Round One: AHRMA Mid Atlantic Cross-Country – Rocket Raceway - April 11, 2021
Author: Joshua Schucker
As with most any off-season, as round one’s circled date on the calendar begins approaching, excitement and anticipation build exponentially. However, this particular off-season may have provided far greater anticipation than those in recent memory. Several factors are in play here to create hype for 2021. First, despite early interreference from the COVID pandemic, the 2020 season turned out to be a remarkably complete and competitive season with some exciting new venues and continued growth. So, it is always exciting to build off a successful season, but in this case, it is also heartening to know that we are continuing to put distance between ourselves and the uncertainty surrounding the early part of 2020. Secondly, the Mid-Atlantic region has some revolutionary new rules and procedures in place for 2021! Always looking to improve the experience for racers and spectators alike, Dave Kutskel and the Mid-Atlantic leadership team took a hard look at the recent series’ events in an effort to uncover success, failure, and opportunity. Several major changes were implemented that should increase the competitiveness, intrigue, and opportunity to race at each of the scheduled ten events for this year. Mark Schwab (32) Photo: Jason

The changes for 2021 are as follows:
• Introduction of a new “AA” class for the fastest fast guys to complete for the “overall” championship. These riders are not broken into age or displacement classification and always start on the first row of each race. Bike selection is per the individual race eligibility (i.e., AA Post Vintage class may include PV and Historic, etc.). • Novice and women riders will no longer only start in the morning race, but rather will be placed into the appropriate race associated with their bike’s eligibility. • Due to the increased popularity of 1980s and 1990s disc brake-equipped machines, a third race is added to each event that includes the Pre-Modern (single front disc), Early Modern (dual disc to 1994), Pre-2K (dual discs to 1999) classes. • The sight lap is eliminated due to time constraints of three race format.
MAY 2021
Rocket Raceway is once again the site of the season opener and the first chance to test the new format. After last year’s rescheduled event, which pushed Rocket’s date into the fall, our gracious host Mark Carlson was hard at work harvesting a swath of marketable timber from the property. This complicated the work of trail bosses Mike Zydbak and Dave K., but with the help of a generous group of volunteers they were able to extract the best of last year’s course and connect it to some newly created trail to navigate the perimeter of the clear cut area with little, if any, degradation in the experience. With nearly universal praise for last year’s course and the excitement of the first green flag of the year, the threat of rain was doing little to dampen any spirits heading into Sunday’s event. However, the weather turned out to be more than a threat as a soaking rain set into the area on Saturday and only began to retreat as participants lined up for registration Sunday. While the course is known to drain relatively well, the absence of a sight lap would make the true impact of the precipitation a mystery until competitors took the green flag. The good: As is typical for the Rocket Raceway property, the course layout is wonderful and takes full advantage of the elevation changes, valleys, tight forest single track, and open flowing two track. The bad: The rain preceding the event was not to be denied. Its impact was noticeable immediately and conditions degraded as the races progressed. By the midpoint of race three, there was some improvement in upper areas,

but the damage had already been done. A small portion of grass track had turned into a fifty-foot-wide quagmire akin to a scene from Blackwater highlights from days past. A large uphill near the starting area was the site of several lap one bottlenecks as even the alternate lines turned into rutted slop. Low lying areas regressed into single lane footpeg depth ruts filled with water and ever further exposed roots. As the footpegs grew higher from the ground in later races, the ruts got deeper. Tight single track often became a slot car track. Not to belabor the conditions as there is little you can do to control nature, but there is no doubt that success on this day was as much about survival as it was speed. As is habit for the Mid-Atlantic’s great group of participants, everyone made the best of the hand dealt, and more than one instance of altruism was noted on the course as hands were lent to extricate fellow competitors from undesirable situations. Challenging? Sure, but still a great way to spend your Sunday. Race One (Vintage) Fifty riders lined up to take on the first race of 2021, and it took little time for Brian Grove to demonstrate that he intends to be the man to beat in the inaugural AA class season. Although Josh Zerance, also running in AA, kept Brian honest by keeping him in sight throughout the race, Brian’s Husqvarna would eventually open a one-minute lead on the Can-Am of Zerance to take the overall win. Lee Hickok rounded out the podium while also taking the Vintage 200 Expert class win. Josh Horvath put in a strong ride on 46

his Yamaha to take seventh overall, top intermediate, and the Vintage 200 class win over the Hodaka of Grant Reichart and first-time Mid-Atlantic competitor Sylas Merrell. Merrell held the lead early on before sliding to a respectable third place. As if the conditions were not challenging enough, several brave and talented competitors soldiered through the muck on diminutive 100cc class machines. The top three in the Vintage 100 Intermediate class were all running remarkably similar, and consistent, lap times with the Yamaha MX100 of Craig Lowery ultimately coming out on top of the dueling Hodakas of Scott Danner and Paul Thomas. Even more impressive was the top-ten overall performance by the ultimate 100cc warrior, Kyle Warner, winner of the Vintage 100 Expert class. James Breitegan would jump to the early lead in Vintage 60+ Intermediate action, but series veteran Glenn Hershey would continually chip away at the lead until putting his Can-Am in front for good on lap two. Mick Spisak (Husqvarna), Dave McIntyre (Honda), and Fred Walker (Yamaha) would make up the top five. Race Two (Post Vintage) Although starting from row two, Post Vintage 200 Expert class winner Lee Hickok would take out the best the AA class,

and 66 other riders, had to offer by taking the top spot overall. AA rider Logan Holley would take the overall lead from John Ashcraft on lap two but couldn’t hold off the charging Hickok who took over for laps three and four Holley held on for second, with Post Vintage 200 Expert runner-up Rylin Pacella also making his way past Ashcraft into third. Ashcraft hung on for fourth with the rest of the AA pack hot on his heels with Mike Blackwell and holeshot artist Steve Bowman not far behind. The remainder of the Post Vintage 200 Experts were not going to let Hickok and Pacella get all the glory, as the top-five in class all wound up within the overall top-ten. Dane Brownawell, slinging mud on his Yamaha YZ125, took the third spot in class followed by Josh Zerance (riding his vintage eligible Can-Am!) and IT200 pilot Christian Brumbaugh.
Robert McNeel broke the PV 200/AA stranglehold on the topten by placing eighth and taking home the Post Vintage 60+ Expert class win. J ohn Zellam and his shiny new black stripe tried his best to keep McNeel in sight, but it was all he could do to hold off the constant challenge of third place finisher Jack Petrilla who was seldom further than twenty seconds in arrears of John. Top intermediate John Brant took 12th overall and led a strong contingent of eleven Post Vintage 50+ Intermediates. Vince Monk held the lead early but would succumb to Brant’s charge on lap three. Monk held on for the runner-up over third place Harold Silbaugh making a strong return to the series after sitting out all of 2020. Jim Laird kept the throttle pinned on his YZ125 as he led wire-to-wire to take the Historic 200 Intermediate checkers ahead of Josh Folmar’s Suzuki 185.
Race Three (Disc Brake) Thirty-one riders lined up for the first ever “Disc Brake” race, a reasonably good turnout in its infancy. Expect this class to grow as word gets around. John Ashcraft did not let his lap one lead slip away this time as he laid down a dominating performance on his CR500 to take the overall and AA class wins. Ashcraft’s lap times were nearly a full minute better than anyone else in the field! Fellow

AA class participant Wyatt Stoup had his hands full in fending off Lee Hickok for second. Hickok, again interrupting the AA freight train, landing in third overall and class winner in Pre-2k Open Expert and representing a handful of riders who attempted to “ironman” the event by running all three races in a single day. Not a small feat in the day’s conditions. AA riders Brett Reichart (Kawasaki) and Josh Zerance on a unique ATK 260 LQ followed Lee in rounding out the top five. Brandon Rowe and Neil Russler went 1-2 in the Pre-Modern 200 Novice class and put in impressive overall rides by besting several intermediate level riders. Dave Light stuck the orange fender of his KTM out front early and did not let up as he took an uncontested win over Anthony Lowery’s YZ125 in second followed by the McGrathera “1-800-COLLECT” CR125 of Evan Klingensmith. Despite the rain and mud, the event and its new look, were a success and an encouraging kickoff to a sure-to-be-exciting 2021 season. Many thanks to Mark Carlson for allowing the series to return to its longest running venue yet again, and for using his bulldozer to get the many folks who needed assistance out of the parking lot. Thanks as well to the MidAtlantic’s ever-willing team of volunteers, and special thanks to the sponsors who make these events possible: Potomac Vintage Riders, Preston Petty Products, Stainless Cycle, Vee Rubber, Grove Printing, KMI Printing, Horizon Homes, and Works Enduro Riders. The 2021 schedule and complete results from this event can be found at https://www.ahrma. org/ahrma-mid-atlantic-region. AHRMA PARTNERS WITH WTB OWNERS GROUP
TM
AHRMA has entered into a collaboration with Works Trials Bikes (WTB) Owners Group. WTB has been formed to preserve the history of the sport through the collection, presentation and competition of significant trials motorcycles. With membership exceeding 100, the group is comprised of former works riders, engineers, mechanics, journalists and historians of the sport from all over the world. Recently, at the Ventoux Trial Classic in France, four exceptional machines were on display, some of them previously hidden from public view for decades: • Bultaco Sherpa Type 27, ridden to multiple European Championship events in 1967 • Yamaha 360 prototype, built by five-time French Trials Champion Christian Rayer in 1971/72 with help from the factory, which led Yamaha to eventually produce its famous TY model • Yamaha 250 OW01 cantilever as ridden in 1974 by Mick Andrews to win the Scottish Six Days and third place in the 1974 FIM World Championships • Honda RTL 360, ridden by Rob Shepard to fourth place in the 1979 SSDT before the bike was commissioned to Belgium's rising star, Eddy Lejeune, and finally to Honda development rider, Kiyo Hattori With the explosive growth in Classic Trials overseas, AHRMA is excited to partner with WTB as we endeavor to bring increased visibility to one of our most respected disciplines.

Karl Faruzel says that he is NOT going to race this 82 IT175 he built this winter, wants to stick with motocross and trials. Come on, Karl!
Andy Palmatier’s beautiful 1989 CR125 and Next Generation 1999 KTM 300XC. This man has a very busy weekend at Northeast XC and MX events!
Devin Trexler is returning to Vintage racing after a 15-year hiatus with this 1973 Honda CR250. Keep an eye on this former Expert rated rider!
Ryan Collins was a very fast Novice in 2020 on his 1985 XR200, and now he has added an ’85 IT200. Hmmm… which bike are you going to race in 2021, Ryan?
Rick Ketcham did a “frame off” restoration of this 1983 XR200 over the winter and it is a beauty. Just behind it is LAST winter’s project, his 1974 XLsinore build. He clearly has a thing for four-strokes. To each their own, right?
NORTHEAST REGIONAL UPDATE
The XC and MX events were also Round One of our new NE & Mid-Atlantic XC/MX Challenge Series championship! The criteria to qualify for and to determine the individual class & team champions are:
By: Bob Close
On Your Marks, Get Set…
• All three events count to qualify for the individual and team mini series championship awards in XC and MX.
Can you feel it? Temperatures are slowing warming up (like REALLY slowly), your 2021 season bike builds are going smoothly (or NOT), oil and tire changes have been purchased (again, or NOT), and you have downloaded, printed, and duct taped your AHRMA Northeast 2021 event schedule to the workbench. It is time to go racing! And to recognize some of your efforts, we have included a photo gallery of AHRMA Northeast bike builds and restorations with this issue. If your bike is included, please be prepared to sign autographs (and magazines) at one of our upcoming events! By the time you read this update (here’s where the magazine editor inserts apology for not running this article in the April AHRMA MAG) the 2021 season’s opening event weekend—an XC at Locust Gap, Gap, PA and a Motocross at Irish Valley MX Park (IVMX), Paxinos, PA, will have occurred. This April 24th and 25th get-together is a joint event with the AHRMA Mid-Atlantic Region (i.e., points awarded towards each region’s championships). Our thanks to Mid-Atlantic for “inviting” us to their XC round, and I’m sure they feel the same about our sponsoring the MX race at Irish Valley.
• The points total from each of the three events will determine the individual class and team champions. Points are awarded as listed in the 2021 AHRMA Handbook. • For each region, XC or MX Teams will consist of one Novice, one Intermediate and one Expert level rider. Teams of three Novices, three Intermediates and three Experts may also be formed. A one-time Team entry fee of $5 per rider will be collected at the first event of the series. • The other two Challenge series races will be at the Unadilla, NY, and Ashcraft PA, regional rounds. You’ll need to get your bikes washed off, slathered in WD-40, and air filters cleaned in pretty short order because next up on the AHRMA Northeast schedule is Geer’s Farm in Fulton, NY, on May 1st and 2nd, with XC racing on Saturday and MX on Sunday. Many racers in our XC crowd thought that Geer’s Farm may have been one of the
Merritt Brown is a Maico Guy. Maico Guys like to find and race bikes like this 1973 Maico GS400 in our XC races. So cool, right?
Josh Fisher takes advantage of the Great April Thaw to get his “girls” out into the yard for some fresh air. That’s a 1980 YZ250G (L) and a 1982 XL500R (R). YES, an XL500R. Big Boys, Big Toys in AHRMA Northeast.
best XC layouts on the 2020 Northeast schedule. And there is no doubt that Pete Komarek and company will challenge us this year with their XC and MX layouts. Warning: the “moisture content” across the Geer Brother’s 600 acres could be a lot more significant in May 2021 than it was in October 2020, the last time we visited. Just saying. The beautiful Finger Lakes hills surrounding Lake Lamoka, NY, are the next stop for our series on May 15th and 16th as we visit Renn and Robyn Shepherd’s Lamoka MX facilities. This will again be a Saturday XC/Sunday MX format. The XC layout is always challenging (can you say “off camber switchbacks?”) and if you like elevation changes, their motocross track—similar to Irish Valley—Is all about that. For event details, flyers, and entry forms, please visit the website (ahrmane. org) or the official Facebook page, AHRMA Northeast. Ivan Beattie created and manages the Northeast’s Facebook Page. We also have our Northeast Vintage Riders Club 2021 Membership Forms there. Ivan does a great job in keeping the Facebook Page up-todate and everyone well informed. We appreciate his talent and dedicated work. Do not hesitate to reach out to Merritt Brown (mbrown326@optimum.net) or Ed Roman (vmxracer@outlook.com) for items discussed in this article. And if you have ideas on Northeast content or want to give me some feedback, you can reach me, Bob Close, at: toocloseracing1@yahoo.com
Tom Curry is so excited about the season; he’s already got ‘em on the trailer. A 1978 YZ250E (Near) and 1986 YZ250S (Far). Braaap!!
Crowded House: Bob Close’s 74.5 Penton Jackpiner and 75 YZ125B are ready to go for 2021, the other bikes, not so much.
One of my favorite bikes to stare at our Northeast MX events, Ron Krzaczyk’s fast and furious 1974 Yamaha YZ250A.
Dale Sonnenschein’s beautiful 1983 Husky (White Lightning!) WR250 is just about ready to go. Dale is fast. The bike is fast. This story usually ends with a win.
Everything is Awesome! And that includes Jim Bell’s 1982 Honda CR480R along with his must-have Harbor Freight lift. Bring it on, Jim.
Loren’s 1973 450WR. Takes a licking, keeps on ticking. Go Loren!
Massachusetts is In Da House when it comes to AHRMA Northeast and the Curry Brothers. Check out Jody Curry’s awesome 1979 KTM 420 that he has completed this winter. On the right is his 2nd project, a 1980 Honda CR250. Bring It on, Jody.

Making History Cecil Sandford made history as the first rider to win a World Championship riding an MV Agusta. Now, at the age of 91, he is motorcycling’s oldest-surviving World Champion and still has vivid memories of Grand Prix racing in the 1950s.

n Wednesday, June 11th, 1952, Cecil Sandford started something very big. He scored the first World Championship race victory for MV Agusta, the marque that went on to become the most successful manufacturer in Grand Prix racing, with 275 race wins and 75 Rider and Constructor world titles. Even now, almost half a century after By MickMV’s last race, only Honda, YaOfield maha, and Aprilia have achieved more Grand Prix success. Two months after Sandford took MV’s first classic win in the Ultra-Lightweight TT, he clinched the 125cc World Championship, MV’s first. Five years later he won his second World Championship, in the 250cc class, with rival Italian brand Mondial. During his 15-year career, the Gloucestershire, England rider had factory contracts with AJS, Velocette, MV, DKW, and Mondial. He raced against Geoff Duke, John Surtees, and Mike Hailwood,

undreds of racers from North America and other parts of the world converged on Daytona International Speedway to compete for race wins and National Championships at the 36th annual Championship Cup Series (CCS) Race of Champions, featuring the final rounds of the AMA-sanctioned American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) National Sprint and Team Challenge series. On the line were eight National Championships in the ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire, decided by points accumulated over a seven-round season; four National Championships in the ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire, decided by points accumulated during an eight-round season; and 54 CCS National Championships, which were decided by winner-take-all sprint races. The Race of Champions also included two MotoGirlGT exhibition races, featuring only female competitors. After a full day of mostly dry practice time and the Team Hammer Advanced Riding School on Friday, racing began in wet conditions on Saturday; the track dried out later in the afternoon and

Former Moto2 World Championship rider and 2008 125cc Grand Prix World Championship runner-up Simone Corsi rode a Pirelli-fitted Squid Hunter Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 in the ASRA Team Challenge race as part of a last-minute deal put together as a possible precursor to a Daytona 200 effort. The 32-year-old Italian took the overall lead on lap 30 of the race and turned laps as quick as 1:53.485 to pull away and claim the overall and GTU class victories by 13.869 seconds. “I love this track,” Corsi said in English from the podium. “The race was very difficult, but I enjoy it very much. I want to thank my team. They did a great job.” West Side Performance’s Christian Miranda, age 19, raced closely with Corsi but fell behind after the first and only round of pit stops. Miranda, however, held on to finish second overall and in the GTU class on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Series regular Lloyd Bay-
ley finished third overall and first in the GTO category on his BMW S1000RR. Jinba Ittai Motorsport’s Joel Lenk crossed the finish line fourth overall and second in the GTO class, and that was enough to claim the 2019 ASRA Team Challenge Overall and GTO Championships. Jinba Ittai Motorsport edged out seven-time ASRA Team Challenge Champion Grease Monkey Racing (Eric Helmbach/Stephen Hoffman) for both titles. Grease Monkey Racing finished the race sixth overall and third in GTO. JoeyO Racing (Robert Bettencourt/Sean Osowski) took 18th overall and won in the GT Lights category on a Yamaha FZ07, while fourth place in the GT Lights division was enough for Racing 101 (Doug Stufflebeam/ Gino Angella/Mark Evry/Joseph Ciesnik) to secure the GT Lights Team Challenge Championship. Britain’s greatest riders of all time. And he won the race in which Hailwood made his debut, at Oulton Park in April, 1957. “Surtees was one of the best riders I ever watched,” recalls Sandford, a chipper nonagenarian with an amazing memory for the first decade of motorcycle World Championship racing. “And Duke was always a step ahead. He was the only bloke I ever saw drift a motorbike, at Monza.” Sandford started racing as a teenager, just after the Second World War, after converting his Triumph road bike for scrambling, trials, and grass-track duties. Next came road racing, usually at disused wartime bases like Haddenham, Dunholme, and Blandford Forum. He made his TT debut in the 1948 Clubmans Junior, although he very nearly didn’t make it to the Isle of Man. “We were taking my Velocetteto Douglas from Liverpool, with me, my mum and my dad in an MG with the Velo on a trailer.
