Welcome

Welcome back to the drive-in this year to honor the talents of our members, recognize design quality and commend their contributions to our built environment. Every day, AIA Eastern New York members take charge of complex challenges and create designs that have both tangible and intangible results, affecting how we live, move, breathe, play and work on this earth. Tonight, we celebrate this tremendous work, promoting mutual respect and casting a brighter light on excellent designers. The AIAENY 2021 Design Awards Committee, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors extend their gratitude to all who took the time and effort to submit this year and congratulate the award recipients on their achievement. Master of Ceremonies Artist Michael Oatman calls his practice ‘the poetic interpretation of documents.’ His collages and installations integrate thousands of found, modified and handmade components, including artifacts of material culture, painting, drawing, video, and food. These architectural ‘unvironments’ have been installed at museums, public spaces and private homes. His installations are ‘context-specific’, and demand from him a total immersion into physical location, sonic/haptic realms, local history and the personal stories of those he encounters while working. He has exhibited extensively in the US and abroad. His reconstructions of permanence and decay, seen through and acted out by students under his tutelage, leave lasting impressions. Oatman received his BFA from RISD, and his MFA from the University at Albany. He has taught at Harvard, UVM, UAlbany St. Michael’s College and Vermont College. He has been a visiting critic at RISD from 1986 to the present. Since 1999 he has been a faculty member in the School of Architecture at Rensselaer. Oatman has offered seminars on Marcel Duchamp and Alfred Hitchcock and specializes in studio courses where students build projects at a 1:1 scale. He teaches drawing, thesis, and helps students toward the realization of their own research. In 2004, he began working with gifted students from RPI, Skidmore, SUNY and other schools under the name of Falling Anvil Studios. Many recent graduates have Michael Oatman stories that give glimpses into his innovative and constantly questioning character. PAGE 7

Recent projects include “All Utopias Fell,” a permanent commission for MASS MoCA, that was open until October 2010; a recent book for graphic design firm id29 and a long-term outdoor video environment. At the beginning of the shutdown in March 2020, Michael stocked up on food for a month of seclusion and got to work in his 6,000 square foot home-studio, once a church hall, designed by Fiebes & Schmidt out of Schenectady back in the mid-20th century. In all, three new works were started and finished during the shutdown period. “Shooting Star and Rising Sun”, “Imitation of Life, or the Fossil Record”, and “American Spring” each take the inspirational original images and explode interpretation in new directions through the foils of repetition and recognition by the viewer. The latest of these three works debuted in last year’s Fence Show at the Arts Center of the Capital Region. Check out Michael’s works online (there is a video tour of the Mass MOCA installation) and in person when you have the opportunity to be in the space (and time) he creates with his art.

“The jury enjoyed the use of vernacular materials and how the glazing creates a very inviting commercial space without compromising security. Thoughtful layering of program seamlessly separates private and public spaces within the bank. A consistent level of detail was maintained through large and small spaces. Drawings and photographs document a high level of attention to detail through multiple scales from the overall layout down to specific connections.”

The Owners vision for this project was to blend traditional Adirondack design with their progressive business philosophy. The existing site conditions lead to a solution that located the open Manager’s workstations to the south, adjacent to the entry lobby and providing clear visual connection through the teller stations to the drive through services at the north. The second floor shares access through the main building entry and contains offices, shared workspace and small conference room. The branch Vice President’s office and conference room each overlook the lobby and main entry below, furthering their passive approach to security.

PAGE 18

A mix of heavy timber and locally quarried stone relate to regional Adirondack camps while the aluminum and glass curtainwalls and painted fiber cement siding reference more contemporary buildings. Deep overhangs and wall-mounted louvers mitigate effects of undesirable summer sun without inhibiting the owner’s requirement for visual connection with the surrounding site.

“The jury was impressed with the relationship of the building to the site and the relationship of program elements in the building. The overall massing and contrast of materials illustrate the deft skill of the design team. The jury was excited by the multiple building volumes that were made more complex with differing roof type and the stone plinth. The drawings and sketches were well done and made an impression on the jury.”

A rhombus shaped site is home to this new mixed-use building designed for Airosmith Development. The client’s desire was to balance the inviting warmth of a residence with the sophistication of a commercial office building. A high water table required that the slab on grade and wood framed construction contain all mechanical systems above grade without the benefit of a crawlspace or basement. This resulted in an 11,100sf three-story building with 7,500sf of commercial office space on the first and second floors with 3,600sf of residential space on the third floor.

PAGE 20

Two gable structures are separated by a flat roofed “gasket”. Terraces and balconies allow office and residential functions to connect to the exterior views and sunsets. A central stair of wood, steel and stone anchor the office space while capturing views of the woods beyond. Custom designed millwork bring the warmth of wood to the office space. Sliding glass office partitions invite natural light to the building’s interior.

“The jury appreciates the technical knowledge required to successfully execute this historic restoration. A high level of field investigation and site documentation was clearly demonstrated in the submission. In reviewing the submission, the jury discussed the rigorous attention to detail that is required when conducting the restoration of each of the building elements.”

Yaddo became a federally-designated National Historic Landmark in 2013 and is a unique institution that has inspired artists for nearly 100 years. The 400-acre estate of financier Spencer Trask and his wife Katrina, they bequeathed their fortune and estate to establish residency program for artists, founding the Corporation of Yaddo in 1900.

PAGE 22

To prepare the mansion for the next 100 years, the exterior work was comprehensive including: cleaning and repointing of all stone and brick masonry; restoration of stucco and wood trim; deconstruction and reconstruction of severely deteriorated stone masonry at the porte cochere and west terrace; restoration of the slate and metal roof; introduction of a lightning protection system; restoration of more than 500 windows and doors; expansion and upgrades to the sub-surface drainage and drywell system; reproduction of the deteriorated cast concrete frieze panels, and the restoration of original decorative iron and bronze pieces, including the seven foot tall weathervane.

“The jury felt there was a good transition between the existing architecture and new design work. The jury understood the effort of restoring the Edward Durell Stone designed building, while introducing new program and elements. This project brings new life to an already impressive building.”

The comprehensive rehabilitation of the University at Albany’s Dutch Quad buildings consists of renovations to the existing residence halls and the transformation of the existing dining facility into a campus Health & Counseling Services center. The existing buildings were designed in the unique post-modernist architectural style of Edward Durell Stone. The exterior is complete with expansive arches, slender modern columns, open pedestrian plazas and sunken courtyards. The new entrance acts as a beacon to the new 75,000sf health center. The health center houses provider and counseling offices, exam rooms, a pharmacy and multipurpose spaces. At the entrance to the residence hall, the Academic Student Success Center and vending café provide collaborative, social space.

PAGE 24

The residential spaces accommodate two double-bedroom suite-style housing with laundry rooms on each floor. Lounges with interior full-height glazing allow natural light into the corridors. Finishes and building systems were upgraded, achieving LEED GOLD certification.

“The jury felt the design team did a nice job of not only restoring the church, but updating it to the present liturgy. Photographs illustrate a strong return to the original quality of the church without losing it’s character, nothing is out of place. New visitors to the building may feel it is a preserved original interior. A well done historic restoration.”

In 2014, St. Anthony’s Church was severely damaged by fire and the 1924 Italian Romanesque Revival Church was in danger of being shuttered. A wheelchair lift provides access to all levels and an accessible bathroom was created. The altar was brought forward and a tabernacle was placed behind it in a new devotional chapel with custom wrought-iron gates. Original statuary niches were recreated allowing for a reconciliation room and sacristy behind them. The pew layout was modified to allow for a baptismal font in the center as the new “heart” of the church. Surviving murals were restored, new murals were created and a decorative scheme was developed that respected the original design intent. The wood truss ceiling and stained glass windows were restored; three were recreated from photographs.

Custom furnishings incorporate motifs used in the decorative painting, mechanical systems were replaced and new LED lighting was installed. The parish is once again a thriving community.

“This project made a strong impression on the jury on multiple levels from the space planning to the smallest details. Cues throughout the space transform an open bay into an easily navigable, engaging space. Site lines between spaces create an immersive, open environment. Exciting and distinct finishes and materials used throughout the space provide visual cues for programmatic changes and contribute to intuitive wayfinding. An exemplary design!”

The 25,000sf interior fit-out for The Roux Institute includes workspace and learning environments with flexibility. Furniture is utilized interchangeably, adapting to the changing needs and rotating research teams. Built elements create intimate neighborhoods of work and learning space, and maintain sightlines to the water. The arrival experience is critical; the carpet pattern resembles crashing waves. Upholstery fabrics are inspired by stacks of lobster traps and splashes of red and yellow tie in the iconic Casco Bay Ferries - seen from the Collaborative Cafe. Whitewashed plywood panels evoke the feel of salty oxidation and driftwood.

PAGE 28

The design creates opportunities for collaboration within an open setting while being framed with research & development. The strategic partnerships and the integration of practice through experiential learning create a deep connection to the local community. The space features artwork by local artists from the nearby art school.

“The jury appreciated the program organization and the ability to create an exciting residence in a reasonable amount square footage that fits the site appropriately. Vignettes are persuasive and evocative. The design features beautifully created spaces with an abundance of natural light. Spaces are well proportioned and livable. A high level of design is included at every scale from the overall proportions to details.”

The first of several projects with an Austin, Texas development team, “Travis Heights” is a residence for one of the partners. Backing up to Blunn Creek with views of the Austin skyline, the project is a three story, four bedroom main residence with an attached one-story, two bedroom in-law suite. Strict ordinance guidelines led to stacked and intersecting volumes, balancing the required privacy for two dwellings on a shared city lot. The ends of the stacked volumes remain open to frame the city skyline while creating intimate spaces within, balancing natural light with visual privacy. Stucco, wood, board formed concrete, fiber cement and glass were used to give further definition to the design.

PAGE 30

A steel and wood gate greets visitors upon their arrival. Entering, a three-story staircase climbs along a wall of windows. The first floor living area and second floor terraces transition to outdoor spaces. An elevator threads the levels together, bringing you to a rooftop deck where the spectacular views of Austin’s skyline can be admired.
