Meet the Jury Kelly Yahi, AIA, IIDA, NCIDQ
Partner, Dwyer Architectural, LLC Jury Chair, AIA Central New York Chapter Kelly is a partner with Dwyer Architectural in Syracuse, NY. With her background and primary practice focused on interior design, Kelly is both an NCIDQ Certified Interior Designer and a licensed architect. Kelly has worked in a range of markets including K-12 education, higher education, commercial, and healthcare. Kelly’s true passion lies in healthcare design, her primary focus for over 20 years. She remains dedicated to creating spaces that support the wellbeing of patients, families, and caregivers; understands the importance of the human experience; and knows how to design spaces that consider the perspectives and needs of those that use them. Kelly also serves as the Advocacy chair for the Syracuse City Center of IIDANY, as well as the current president of AIACNY. Kelly’s passion for her work and commitment to her community are at the heart of her ambition.
Ben Larsen, AIA, RRC, CPHD, NCARB, Associate Partner, Holmes, King, Kallquist & Associates, Architects LLP AIA Central New York Chapter An Associate Partner at Holmes, King, Kallquist & Associates, Architects, Ben has cultivated a career specializing in building envelope forensics and remediation. A focus on optimizing existing structures and designing for an ever-changing environmental landscape, Ben has lent his expertise to a multitude of sectors, including K-12, higher education, civic, and private construction. His passion for crafting efficient, sustainable, and resilient building envelopes has been the driving force behind his contributions to the architectural field. With certifications as a Registered Roof Consultant (RRC) and a Certified Passive House Designer (CPHD), coupled with his accreditation from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), Ben brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his role. Meet the Jury Michelle Fuller, AIA
Project Manager, King + King Architects AIA Central New York Chapter Michelle is a Project Manager at King + King Architects, a firm native to Syracuse, NY, and the oldest continuously operating firm in the state with a 155-year history of designing projects in the K-12, Higher Ed, Healthcare, and Commercial markets. The majority of her career focused on K-12 education design, creating fun and inspiring spaces for students of all ages to learn and thrive. Michelle has a passion for designing immersive, innovative, and functional learning environments that respond to the educational, social, and emotional needs of students, teachers, and administrators. Throughout her career, she has been involved in a variety of informative architecture, education, and STEM/STEAM events around Central New York, helping middle and high school students learn more about the profession and other STEM-related careers and opportunities. Michelle serves on the AIA Central New York chapter Board of Directors, and is slated to be the incoming 2024 AIA CNY chapter President.

“Excellent attention to detail in the finish selections, materiality, lighting, furniture, and color palette. Scale of the exterior feels appropriate, and the variety of materials and addition of glazing adds visual interest and helps to break up the facade. Hard to tell it was previously a big box store despite the scale of the building.”

Honor Award Commercial/Industrial Large Project Scarlet Knife Latham, NY SWBR
The Scarlet Knife Restaurant is a culinary haven reborn from an abandoned Kmart strip plaza on the town’s outskirts. This 15,000 sf project seamlessly blends casual charm with haute cuisine in a meticulously designed space, redefining regional dining. A sensory journey, patrons encounter a visually striking scarletaccented knife-shaped bar and towering double-sided wine rooms. The radiant open kitchen takes center stage, surrounded by large windows connecting diners to the seasonal outdoor bar and dining area—the Garden Center. Within the restaurant, discreet acoustical elements enhance the ambiance amidst warm wood, burnt umbers, and scarlet accents. The reservation-only dessert room, adorned in rich gem tones, offers an intimate and romantic experience. Strategic use of wood, concrete, and stone establishes a visual link to the outdoors. The Scarlet Knife stands as a community landmark, earning the Albany Business Review’s Transformation of the Year Award for revitalizing the Kmart Plaza. This once-overlooked space now boldly proclaims something extraordinary—a dining experience that transcends expectations. PAGE 15

Citation Institutional Little Red School House, North Greenbush, NY Phinney Design Group
Built in 1861, the Little Red Schoolhouse is one of the last operational one-room schools in New York State. Faced with overcapacity due to the Town of North Greenbush’s population surge, the architect collaborated closely with the North Greenbush Common School District to develop a capital project preserving the historic 900 sf schoolhouse while adding a substantial 5,000 sf extension. This addition, strategically designed to triple classroom space, introduce breakout areas, and centralize district offices, addresses the pressing needs of a growing community. Maintaining the beloved schoolhouse’s prominence was a priority. To achieve this, the architect oriented the new construction five degrees off axis, artfully concealing its larger size. The exterior seamlessly marries modern and historic aesthetics with dark gray board and batten siding, cedar barn doors, and a main entrance that mirrors the original proportions. Historic details, including tin ceilings and wood wainscotting, were meticulously restored through research and historic photos. Inside, the connection to the addition delicately encloses the original mechanical room, ensuring minimal disturbance. Navigating the building’s interior is a journey through the fluid integration of modern and historic design elements, creating a harmonious and cohesive language. PAGE 17

The project sought to craft a sustainable and timelessly designed construction home in the heart of the Adirondacks, situated on the northwest tip of Lake George. Nestled on a small peninsula, the residence boasts an expansive 270-degree panorama of the lake and mountains. Capitalizing on its 456 feet of shoreline, the design sprawls to ensure breathtaking views from every room. A curved stone patio along the shore connects the indoors with the outdoors, while an outdoor shower off the master suite enhances the connection to the lake. A centenarian oak tree takes center stage in a large screen porch, and the exterior seamlessly integrates into the Adirondack setting through timber brackets, locally sourced materials, and a palette of natural hues. The blend of old and new defines the interior, featuring reclaimed white oak timbers, salvaged doors, and vintage elements alongside modern aesthetics. Custom details, including handmade bronze fireplace doors, a bespoke range hood, and artisan-crafted steel and timber elements, were meticulously incorporated to elevate the overall quality and uniqueness of the design. The result is a harmonious fusion of tradition and modernity, carefully curated to enhance the home’s character and charm. PAGE 21

Nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, this sustainable dwelling seamlessly blends rustic charm with eco-conscious design. Positioned on a challenging slope, the house addresses its topography with a walkout level, eliminating the need for a traditional basement. Sustainability is key, evident in locally sourced materials, high energy efficiency, solar panels, and an absence of on-site fossil fuels, making the residence nearly off-grid. The exterior boasts distinctive elements like converging shed roofs, Fir glulam structural rafters, large black aluminum windows, and Shou Sugi Bahn siding, marrying aesthetics with environmental mindfulness. Reclaimed stone forms functional retaining walls, while clerestory windows in the great room facilitate passive cooling. A central masonry chimney anchors family gatherings during colder months. The open floor plan seamlessly combines the great room, dining space, kitchen, and loft, promoting togetherness. Private retreats include a lower-level recreation room, a master bedroom deck, and discreet fire pits and patios. The interior design celebrates structural elements with visible glulam rafters and steel beams, creating a serene mountain retreat that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. PAGE 23

385 Broadway seamlessly blends historic charm with contemporary living advancements in downtown Saratoga Springs, New York. This exemplary infill construction respects neighboring structures, especially the historic United States Hotel that once stood on the site. Offering much-needed housing in the city’s growth, the building features two-bedroom, one-bedroom, and micro apartments on floors 2 through 5, complemented by commercial spaces, an automated package room, and innovative parking solutions on the first floor. Residents enjoy smart home technologies, controlling lighting and HVAC settings via their smartphones. The second floor hosts a versatile common room for cooking lessons, art classes, and remote work. Green roof terraces enhance the eco-friendly design, promoting sustainability and well-being. To mitigate height perception, the 5th floor is strategically set back, creating a four-story façade. A steel colonnade pays tribute to the United States Hotel, and the building’s massing is thoughtfully divided into four sections, integrating harmoniously with the cityscape. This integration achieves a balance between old-world aesthetics and modern functionality. PAGE 25
