Dear friends, On Sunday, May 15, Central Park will be host to 45,000 friends and family members of GMHC for the 26th Annual AIDS Walk New York. How proud and grateful we are that so many people of all ages and from all neighborhoods in the Tri-State area turn out to walk in the largest and most successful AIDS Walk in the country. Thank you – we need every one of you!

We need you to walk for all those who are living with HIV/AIDS, for those we have lost, and very much for those we want to keep from becoming infected. New York City is still the heart of the AIDS epidemic in the U.S., and at the finish line of AIDS Walk – at the end of a great deed for an important cause – are thousands of educational materials, safer sex kits, and free, confidential HIV testing.

Just two weeks ago, GMHC moved to its new home at 446 West 33rd Street (between Ninth and Tenth Avenues) in Manhattan. Our new location is helping us bring the best services possible to the nearly 11,000 New Yorkers living with and affected by HIV/AIDS who rely on GMHC for direct services such as treatment education, accessing benefits, mental health counseling, and legal assistance.

Our brand new kitchen and larger dining room are helping us meet the growing demands on our hot meals and food pantry program.

Our HIV prevention and testing programs are being expanded in the new GMHC Center for HIV Prevention at 224 West 29th Street (between Seventh and Eighth Avenues) which will include a new youth leadershipdevelopment program.

Throughout the changes at GMHC – even as we moved homes – what remains constant are the walkers, volunteers, supporters and sponsors of AIDS Walk New York. We look forward to welcoming you to our new homes on West 33rd and 29th Streets.

HISTORY INSPIRES ‘MILK MEN’ TO REACH FURTHER

T

wo years ago, Stephen Rivoli was seeking a way to become more involved in the New York City gay and lesbian community. He had just watched the documentary, The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, and was inspired by Milk’s call for gay men and lesbians to stand up and take an active role in shaping their community for the better.

Rivoli found the perfect opportunity to take on Milk’s mission by forming the AIDS Walk New York team, the Harvey Milk Men, in 2008. “Communities lost so many leaders to AIDS throughout the 80s and early 90s. I feel like a lot of our [team’s] success stems from pairing a wonderful cause, AIDS Walk New York, with the idea of community building. That combination has resonated with so many people regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or creed.”

The Harvey Milk Men team began by leveraging their skills and connections. Many of their Team Members work in media or promotions, which allows the team to draw on an expansive network of talent and resources. The team has grown from its original 30 members to the hundreds of Milk Men—and Milk Maids—that Stephen expects to walk this year. The large fundraising base multiplies their individual efforts and has placed the group among the top AIDS Walk fundraising teams.

Rivoli approaches the subject of the Milk Men’s success with humility: “We take every opportunity to remind ourselves that we are not amazing; the cause is amazing, and by staying focused on that cause we can make a special contribution. We look forward to developing our group more this year, and in years to come.”

STAR WALKERS

T

he fundamental success of AIDS Walk New York has always depended on a vast community of passionate and persuasive individuals. Each participant does his or her best to raise money for the fight against AIDS – some people raise $50 while others manage to raise hundreds. Year after year, the collective power of these dedicated supporters generates millions of dollars for GMHC and scores of AIDS service organizations in the tri-state area.

AIDS Walk New York is extremely grateful to everyone who raises funds, but we do like to shine a special spotlight of recognition on those whose fundraising achievement is particularly exceptional – the members of the AIDS Walk New York Star Walkers ClubTM. The Star Walkers Club is comprised of participants who pledge to raise $1,000 or more. Hundreds of participants reach that goal; many go far beyond that, raising thousands of dollars.

On the morning of the event, Star Walkers who do reach their

$1,000 goal receive a Star Walker crown, which signals to everyone that they have achieved incredible fundraising success. As these ”crowned heads of fundraising” make their way along the 10kilometer route, many other participants cheer and whistle.

“Since they are fundraising royalty, it is not uncommon to see people bowing and curtseying in admiration!” remarks Star Walker Coordinator Duyên Tran. “The Star Walkers take great pride in their 24-carat cardboard crowns, and we want to make as much of a fuss as possible to show our appreciation,” Tran adds.

In addition to receiving commemorative awards, these fundraising experts will be rewarded with a Star Walker commemorative lapel pin. Star Walkers also attend the exclusive Star Walker Breakfast on the morning of AIDS Walk New York.

or more than 35 years, Odyssey House has been a leading non-profit organization in saving lives, rebuilding families, and restoring communities. They do this through innovative programs at four buildings in New York City, each focusing on a distinct population ranging from family centers to treatment for teens overcoming substance abuse. In 2010, Odyssey House became involved with the AIDS Walk through the leadership of one of their dedicated volunteers, Sylvia Hyman.

“They are hooked… they don’t Affectionately known as “Ms. want to get paid or praised, Sylvia,” she has devoted they just want [to] work!” countless hours to Sylvia Hyman, coordinating both her AIDS Odyssey House Walk school fundraising team, Northstar Academy Middle School, and community volunteering initiatives of the young men at Odyssey House. Hyman has a very personal connection to AIDS Walk and GMHC. Many of her family members have HIV and AIDS and she has lost many more to the disease.

In 2010, Hyman encouraged 15 young men enrolled in Odyssey House programs to join AIDS Walk New York’s volunteer efforts.

These eager and reliable young men volunteered twice a week for the entire campaign.

AIDS Walk New York Volunteers from Odyssey House They carried their devotion through to the day of the AIDS Walk in Central Park, where they arrived at 6:30 a.m. to set up the walk route.

Sylvia says of their participation, “The guys felt important because they were in charge…they felt good because they were giving back and treated as equals.” Sylvia also spoke about the importance of this organization to the young men: “They are hooked… they don’t want to get paid or praised, they just want [to] work!”

This year, two members of Odyssey House, James Doling and Bernard Taylor, have taken their support even further by making a promise to AIDS Walk New York, to volunteer every week until Sunday, May 15, 2011, and to devote all of the time, effort, and energy that they can to make the AIDS Walk a success.

H

How do you turn one Facebook post into $36,000 to fight AIDS? Ask Tyler Helms. Two years after he was diagnosed with HIV, Helms publicly disclosed his HIV status on World AIDS Day in December 2009 with a Facebook update. The post generated an overwhelming response from his friends, family, supportive strangers, and the media. His story was picked up by the Advocate, the world's leading gay news magazine, and run in several publications.

This series of events propelled his urgent goal forward, that people must “keep this conversation at the forefront of our public dialogue...whether we reach 10 or 10,000 people, one life impacted is enough to keep talking.”

Helms’s own conversations resulting from the post spurred him to create and lead the 2010 AIDS Walk fundraising team, Impact Red. They raised an incredible sum—more than $36,000 to support people living with HIV and AIDS. Not shying away from ambition, this year, they plan to raise $100,000.

As an award-winning advertising executive and published writer, Tyler Helms knows the importance of communication. His advocacy work to spread HIV awareness and prevention messages stresses the need for open and honest discourse. Helms focuses on keeping conversation at the forefront, “in the hope that our social approach to this disease will catch up with our medical treatments.”

Helms also recognizes the need for creating a dialogue about the disease where none existed before—especially among communities in which HIV/AIDS is most stigmatized. We need to use every opportunity that we have to “do the human thing,” says Helms, and “talk about it.”

A

s of April 19, GMHC will be located at 446 West 33rd Street in Manhattan. This transition will allow us to serve our clients and community in new and expanded ways:

• A redesigned, open floor plan will provide an unbroken continuum of care, easing a client’s experience and improving the flow of information among our departments.

• Our new kitchen and larger dining room will provide nutrition to thousands of HIV-positive clients, improving their well-being.

• The integration of MOMS Pharmacy on site will help ensure our clients receive medications they need and increase therapy adherence.

• We will extend our reach beyond our new front door by opening the GMHC Center for HIV Prevention, in Chelsea, on May 31.

These are just a few of the wonderful benefits that come with our move. But it is what we have learned through this process that has reminded us why we are proud to be a part of our community.

We were shown immeasurable generosity from seeming strangers — architects, designers, general contractors — and through it, we were reminded that, while much has changed in three decades, including our address, the importance of our work and its ability to inspire others has not.

We have learned during the course of this transition that the four walls which comprise our office cannot possibly contain our work and the goodness of the people who perform it. It is our staff, clients, and volunteers who consecrate the halls we walk each day. And it is they who transform our address into a home for anyone affected by HIV. Our new home has already shown us that despite the horrors and incalculable losses, this epidemic still brings us together. It is the reason we work so hard to preserve life and health and the reason so many people choose to give, care, and help.

As a friend to many who face HIV and AIDS, Feldman strongly believes in the work that AIDS Walk New York and GMHC do to raise critical funds and support people with the disease.
