As a producer of documentaries aimed at generating awareness for the plight of youth in developing countries, I am trying to live this philosophy. I never would have dreamed as a student of Economics and Statistics that I would be in such a place. But then there was AIESEC. My interest in film-making started out as an innocent hobby until I joined AIESEC’s local committee at the University of Ryerson and eventually became Vice President of Member Development. Our team was in need of stimulating membership, so I got the idea to start documenting the benefits of being an AIESEC member through the lens of a video camera. In capturing the social, personal and cross-cultural dynamics of AIESEC, I began to see how the organization was a perfect place to inspire people. That year, with the help of my video, our local committee was awarded the Spirit Award in recognition of our recruitment success. This was the first seed that planted in me the confidence to embark on my personal career journey. My years in AIESEC gave me an “anything goes” attitude, open to risk and possibility. But this came with a sense of responsibility and purpose that I had adopted by being immersed in AIESEC’s values of international understanding and

cooperation. So it was natural that I was compelled to explore my interest in filmmaking for the greater good. And with an immense support network in the AIESEC friends I had met over the years, I felt encouraged by limitless options. In 2003, as part of the Millennium Development Goals, I created a 2 minute piece on Universal Primary Education which received a United Nations Video Award. Upon graduating in 2005, I embarked on my first film project to Kenya, where along with an AIESEC friend I created an educational film about the state of its high schools. We were able to dig deep into the grassroots of the communities we were covering thanks to our AIESEC connections. Now my passion, film-making is a rewarding career that continues to teach me. I have just returned a sixth time from the Philippines, where I am documenting the story of youth living in cemeteries. In collaboration with Canadian AIESEC friends, I have made an educational film in the Kibera Slums, Kenya which has created internship opportunities because of its ability to bridge local communities with AIESEC. The turning point to my career and life choices was AIESEC. It showed me how small I was but how big a change I can make in this world.

INTERNSHIP STORY

ALEXANDER MACKENZIE In Amsterdam, Netherlands I’ve been in Amsterdam for four days now, figure it’s time to start my blog. Primarily, I’ll use this blog to write, post videos, and hopefully some mp3s of me talking (when I don’t feel like writing) about my experience living and working in the Netherlands. I’ve signed a one-year contract with ING Bank which I begin on Wednesday and am super excited about. How did this opportunity come about for me? In my last semester of school at Wilfrid Laurier University I joined a student run organization called AIESEC. If anybody reading this blog would like to work abroad, definitely check out that website and get involved with your local committee. I learned about it from my Mom, an AIESEC alumnus— which speaks to length of which this organization has been around (no offence, Mom). So now I’m here, after looking and pretty quickly finding a great opportunity for me. I’m living in a place called The Eenhoorn (The Unicorn), which is an apartment complex that is primarily rented to international interns and students. It also serves as proof that Unicorns do exist. I’m a five minute walk from the Metro, a 10 minute metro to the heart of downtown, and a stone’s throw from 22 other AIESEC interns in the exact same circumstance as me. Amsterdam life so far is pretty damn good.

I named this blog post Hamsterdam mostly because the obscure wordplay made me chuckle, but also upon attempting to justify the name I realized that this is truly a different experience for me… I’ve never been to Europe; I haven’t even been to a different country for more than two weeks. To a hamster a new place is terrifying; it makes you feel small and uneasy with your surroundings. But that doesn’t mean the hamster is not going to eat, to run on his little wheel, to look cute and get petted and stuff (okay, this analogy is losing its poise). My point is that I’m up for the cultural challenge. I can’t wait to see what culture is like beyond Canada, to live it. This blog will be an extension of my cultural awe. It will be for the curious mind, for someone who wants to know more. If that’s you, if you want to travel, to learn, to work, to see things up close you’ve only ever seen in movies and television, join me. Join me on this blog, and if that’s not enough join me on this continent—or find one of your own! I’ll take this last opportunity to plug AIESEC again because of how they opened my eyes to a world I had truly not thought possible six months ago. Hope you’ve enjoyed my first post, there’s many more to come! If you’re on Twitter, I’ll be tweeting every time I write a new post, so follow me @MacKing.
