1. ABOUT AIESEC AIESEC is a global, non-political, independent, not-for-profit organization run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. Its members are interested in world issues, leadership and management. AIESEC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, creed; religion, national, ethnic or social origin. For over 64 years AIESEC has been an international independent nonpolitical youth run organization that aims to promote social understanding, entrepreneurship and youth leadership in the broader community. Now present in over 2400 universities in 126 countries and territories, over 1,000,000 Alumni and over 8,000 global partners. AIESEC contributes to the development of individuals by providing them an integrated development experience that we call the AIESEC experience, comprised of:

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Through the management of projects and activities in over 2400 offices at the local, national, and international level across 126 countries and territories, we provide about 24,000 leadership opportunities to our members each year. This provides our members with a range of valuable and practical experience and skills in management and leadership.

INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIPS: Internship exchanges supply powerful learning experiences for young people. The focus of our exchange experiences is not only to provide a professional experience to the individual but also to provide a more powerful learning experience, which will lead him/her to become more entrepreneurial, culturally sensitive, open minded and active learner.


2. ABOUT AIESEC PORT HARCOURT AIESEC Port Harcourt is the Local Chapter of AIESEC present in Rivers state, located in the Southern part of Nigeria. We are situated at the International Students’ Center (ISC) in the University of Port Harcourt. With over 30 years of existence, AIESEC in Port Harcourt has been running several community transformative project in Rivers state Nigeria, Our Project cuts across all sector and area of the industrialization and attracts various companies, NGOs and government agencies as project partners.


4. OUR PROJECTS Over the years, AIESEC in Port Harcourt have organized several projects varying from Health Project, Economy development projects, Youth Empowerment projects, orphanage projects, Information Technology projects etc.

This summer our major focus is under listed below: 

5. PROJECT PINK Project PINK is a cancer awareness project that aims to sensitize the general public about cancer related issues and preventive measures. The project also provides screening and tests for various forms of cancer. Cancer is a public health problem world-wide affecting all categories of persons. It is the second common cause of death in developed countries and among the three leading causes of death in developing countries. The various challenges that contribute to cancer morbidity and mortality in Nigeria cannot be tackled by government alone, it should be regarded as everybody’s problem as ‘it represents a tremendous burden on patients, families and the society.

About 24.6 million people live with cancer worldwide.12.5% of all deaths are attributable to cancer and if the trend continues, it is estimated that by 2020, 16 million new cases will be diagnosed per annum out of which 70% will be in developing countries.


5. PROJECT PINK AIESEC Port Harcourt was the initiator of the Project Globally in AIESEC. ď ą

The first phase of the project , in 2011, was aimed at the rural communities in Rivers state, where community women were sensitized about the harm and risk of Breast Cancer, how to detect it early and also the best line of action if detected, this sensitization program was done with interns from Ghana, and huge success were recorded. Over 3 major communities were covered during this period.

In 2012, The project focus was shifted from communities to the University environment, the aim was to create a ripple effect by training students so they in turn can train their relatives in their various communities, the project was run in collaboration with various interns from Taiwan, Brazil, Ghana and Kenya. In the following year 2013, the same scope was implemented, while in 2014, the project ran in 3 phases, in High Schools, the University and also a community to measure the impact created.

PROJECT PINK PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION This Project is targeted to hold in the University of Port Harcourt where students and staff of the University would be sensitized and trained on Cancer issues and its danger. The aim is to make the general public (in the University and its environs) reduce practices that promote Cancer, and also know the step for early detection. 6. THE

PROJECT

The Burden Unemployment is one of the major problems in Africa. Nigeria currently has an unemployment rate of only 8.3% of the labour force annually. Education is very important for every country so, it is necessary for Nigeria to give as many young people as possible the opportunity to be literate and learn about leadership and the importance of learning foreign language. In order to contribute and participate to development of the country AIESEC Port Harcourt is organizing a project called “The Project� which will help the country combat unemployment by training youths (Mainly Orphanage) on various skills and competencies amidst making the project participant multilingual by having internationals organize language trainings within the duration of the project.


6. THE

PROJECT

Project AIM THE SUNSHINE PROJECT aims to develop young kids of Orphanage homes on the skills required to make them employable. We want to empower youths by the leadership training, French teaching and other language, and cultural shock, Entrepreneurial skills, academic performance. The project scope expands at times to training secondary schools in general and Incorporates even broader skills like Information Technology.

Asides from skills acquisition and training on soft skills, the project also entails organizing sports trainings and competitions, hangouts and other fun activities as well as gaming skills. Activities like CHESS, Table and Lawn Tennis, football and other activities, and these activities are anchored by AIESEC Port Harcourt Interns and members.


7. THE Young Minds PROJECT This Project aims to enlighten young children on two basic set of skills, which are foreign languages and information technology. The major target audience are young children in high schools in Rivers state. Unlike the Sunshine project, this covers every other secondary that is not involved with orphans, and covers only foreign languages and Information communication technology. Project Scope The project curriculum aims to cover over 15 distinct high schools and also engage the state government in this project


8. Intern-to-NGO AIESEC Port Harcourt also organize opportunities that enable interns get corporate working experience by engaging in real-time daily operations of some partner NGOs. During these period the intern gets to interact with workers from the NGO and also implement real business strategies important to causing company growth and at the same creating community impact and societal growth. Interns might get stipends for volunteering amongst other key benefits, but they also still get to participate in the Local committee Project and relate with members from AIESEC Port Harcourt from time to time.


9. INTERN’S JOB DESCRIPTION 

  

Curriculum Development: The intern would be tasked to develop a new project implementation module after carefully understanding the realities of the state. The Intern would mix with the target audience to ensure that the delivery of the project is gotten from their end. They would also be responsible for creating awareness and promoting the project on air, and other publicity means. Facilitation: The Intern would be responsible for content delivery after being trained by professionals, they would also be tasked with making presentations and learning aids as need demands. Interns would be part of the planning team to proper prepare for all areas of the project together with the project team and the Board Of Experts (BOEs: Professionals from specified fields). The Job role include 30% Desk/Office work and 70% Field work, because intern constitute a huge percentage to the project work force. Over the years, its been a common practice for interns to be Project Directors and Team Leads for certain projects. There are other exciting job roles and activities the intern would partake in as the experience role by.


9. SPECIAL EVENTS TOUR PROJECT:

During Off Project period, AIESEC Port Harcourt would be organizing a tour project for Interested interns, interested interns should contact the LC prior to time so arrangements can be made for them specially, Come experience Africa at the depths of it heart.


10. Intern House/LC office Due to the strong partnership between AIESEC Port Harcourt and the University of Port Harcourt, AIESEC Port Harcourt has its office and intern house located inside the university, at the international students’ center. The university provides accommodation and other interesting facilities at the disposition of our interns. The intern rooms are well furnished for the comfort of our interns, rooms are equipped with cooling systems, a water heater, refrigerators and other basic facilities to may the intern stay more enjoyable. A home away from home.
