AIESEC | University of New South Wales President’s Address

Delivering quality programs through innovation During my term, it has been amazing to see the growth of this organisation and local committee each and every day. When I first joined in 2011 as a new member, things were very different back then and I have developed myself throughout the way. I believe in the organisational vision to achieve peace and fulfilment of humankind’s potential. This connects us to what we do, which is to provide quality and impactful experiences whether it be within our local committee or overseas. In 2012, there was a strong focus on increasing the quality of our exchange and member programs as this was a key challenge in the global network and across Australia. We achieved this through an emphasis on efficiency, service and engagement of our stakeholders. Whilst the local committee have achieved growth in the number of exchange and leadership experiences, I think a more important factor to a leader is in the development of people around you. My most important lesson in this role has been in doing the right things instead of doing things right. I believe this truly tests the integrity of a person and I hope I will continue to do the right things outside of AIESEC. It would be hard to summarise all our activities in this annual report, so I hope this provides a glimpse of our achievements. I want to thank the executive board and members for devoting countless hours each week to progress the local committee forward, to stand by the organisational vision and to act upon it. Many of our members move on to new and exciting opportunities, but all with a more positive mindset for the world we live in. I wish you all the best of luck! I also want to take this opportunity to thank all our external stakeholders in supporting us, particularly AIESEC Australia for coaching and supporting our local committee. Thank you and best of luck for 2013!

Chris Wu Local Committee President UNSW

Portfolio Teams

Outgoing Exchange – Trisha Shastri We introduced many new initiatives this year to increase the quality of experience for our exchange participants. Our local exchange preparation seminar attracted over 30 attendees, which provided more focused support to UNSW students going overseas to teach or volunteer. We organised workshops to help participants match to their projects as well as skills workshops focused on networking and communications.

Talent Management – Christina Kelman We introduced a mentoring program allowing students to interact with successful AIESEC alumni who utilise their AIESEC experiences in various fields. The WIELD program provided students with the opportunity to develop leadership and project management skills, through practical experience leading a team and working together to host events for various stakeholders of AIESEC UNSW.

Incoming Exchange – Vivienne Tran Our business development activities increased this year through weekly sales sessions and pipeline management. Sales sessions consisted of following-up old accounts to arrange for sales meetings, of which allowed us to continue our two year partnership with Google Australia to source IT interns to Sydney. Through intern servicing we enabled UNSW students to connect with our student interns to promote cross-cultural interactions.

Marketing and Communications – Raymond Su We focused on sustainable marketing on campus and decreased marketing expenses by over 51%. We increased our virtual reach through utilising the UNSW global education programs blog, Blackboard as well as myUNSW. We also hosted a number of events including Brazilian BBQ, informational stall at Careers Expo and foundation day. By improving our brand image through a new exchange brand, we increased applications by 50% in 2012.

Finance and Sponsorship – Nicole Wong Throughout the year, we strengthened our local committee’s connections to different faculties, achieving financial support from ASB and letter of support from FASS. We also supported other portfolio functions through investing in their processes and through governance of the local committee as a whole. We achieved an exceptional rating for finance in the national sub-committee and maintained 9-13 months of financial reserves.

AIESEC | University of New South Wales Core Activities

Quality Exchange Culture Preparation Workshop During October, we hosted an exchange preparation workshop focused on raising awareness of different cultures. Previous exchange participants were invited to present their experiences to the attendees, which helped the new participants in receiving the correct expectation for exchange.

Communications Workshop In August, we invited Alpha, an alumnus and previous president to host a workshop aimed at improving the communication techniques of exchange participants. Using his experience from the finance industry as well as experience in Teach for Australia, attendees gained confidence through proper communication techniques.

Participant Feedback Surveys The exchange management team within Outgoing Exchange portfolio conducted monthly surveys to receive feedback on quality of service and regularity of communication. Using this information, we were able to organise training more tailored to participants and also rewarded members with quality reviews.

Matching Preparation Seminars Four matching workshops were organised in 2012 to assist exchange participants in matching to their overseas projects. Experienced exchange participants were encouraged to facilitate these workshops to improve their communication skills whilst less experienced participants benefited from the support.

Lisa to AIESEC Poland Academy of Perspectives

“In the summer of 2011, I undertook a volunteer internship in Poland, in a program called Academy of Perspectives, along with 14 other interns from around the world. I spent six weeks facilitating workshops for students aged 6-19 across a range of areas, from creative activities for kids to advanced leadership development seminars for young adults. The AIESEC exchange was the perfect combination of international experience, personal development and positive social impact. I learned to adapt quickly to foreign environments, communicate to different audiences, and develop as a leader. In addition, I made life-long friendships with like-minded students from around the world. My experience in AIESEC, both as an executive board member at UNSW in 2010 and as an exchange participant, has been the ideal supplement to the opportunities provided by the university and the Co-op Scholarship Program. By engaging in an area outside of my degree, I was able to gain new global perspectives, as well as meet and interact with people from vastly different backgrounds. As a recent graduate, my AIESEC experience has allowed me to step out into the world with greater confidence in myself and my skills. Lisa is a recent Commerce graduate at UNSW and now works as an Actuarial Analyst at Suncorp

Global Internships through Incoming Exchange Kyle from AIESEC Canada “My name is Kyle and I am a Computer Science student at the University of Waterloo in Canada. I recently had the chance to intern with Google in Australia through AIESEC UNSW. When I arrived, I met with local AIESEC members on several occasions, visiting different sites around Sydney. It was nice to be made welcome when so far from friends and family in Canada. Thank you AIESEC UNSW!”

Albert from AIESEC Indonesia “I was a software engineering intern at Google Australia. The friends at AIESEC UNSW, especially Delia and Vivienne have helped me tremendously since before I prepared to come to Australia and throughout the time I have been here. They helped me in getting my visa, finding a very good place to stay at Sydney and getting adapted to Sydney initially. During my internship, they also organized various outing events with the AIESEC community. I really enjoyed these events; they helped me to make many new friends, as well as have a better understanding of the life and culture in Australia. Oh, they even threw a party for my 22nd birthday! I will always remember the memorial experiences in Sydney!”

Graduate Attributes Members within our local committee engage weekly in our committee meeting where they are made aware of topical issues around the world and develop through the local education cycle. Our members also participate in events and gatherings, national and international conferences to truly help them expand their global networks.

Critical thinking and problem solving During the year, the executive board identified that member efficiency was one of the key challenges across the AIESEC network. Through standardisation of exchange services and the use of online platforms, we increased our local committee’s member efficiency to be the highest in the Australia network as measured by exchange.

Teamwork and leadership Our members collaborate in different teams to drive initiatives for their respective functions. They also attend weekly team meetings, team events and informal meetings where they learn to work with a diverse group of people. Each team is led by a team leader, elected from the prior year, where they are challenged with team dynamics and member motivation.

Karthik Karthik joined our local committee in March within the marketing and communications portfolio team. He is responsible for technology within the committee, and has contributed to growth in our online promotions as well as in the development of our website. In September, he was selected as the organising president for the regional alumni evening and has been elected as the Vice President of Outgoing Exchange for 2013.

Karthik is a 2nd year Mechatronics Engineering student at UNSW

International Exposure Social, ethical and global perspectives The UNSW chapter partners with local committees from around the world to provide exchange experiences. Whilst the incoming exchange team establishes these experiences, whether it be professional or community in nature, the outgoing exchange team is responsible for recruiting students to participate in them. Through this, AIESEC creates leadership experiences as well as exchange experiences that foster the global mindset and international exposure of students.

Htet to AIESEC Taiwan “Undertaking the exchange program in Taiwan was one of the most rewarding decisions I made at UNSW. Firstly, in the depth of a new culture, customs and people, I was constantly off balance and lost sight of all the familiar comforts of home and friends. I was forced to rely on my own personal strengths. Secondly, this experience allowed me to understand myself through the importance of culture and national identity that define the practices of people all over the world. Lastly, nothing can substitute the learning, experiences and friendships I gained through this experience. Htet is a 3rd year Arts and Commerce student at UNSW
