Program Outline

What is this program? Global Community Development Program (GCDP)

provide youth with the opportunity to volunteer overseas for positive change whilst living a cross-cultural experience. The opportunities are endless, from environmental sustainability education in Malaysia, youth empowerment workshops in Romania, teaching English in Taiwan to running a Global Village in Poland, just to name a few. By offering the GCDP in many countries, we hope to expose you to new cultural environments, where you can experience the reality of living, and not simply visiting another country. Immerse in a new culture with local AIESECers, explore with your fellow program participants and experience a new lifestyle that you simply did not know existed before!

STEP

Save the environment, People! STEP is an initiative in Malaysia designed to raise awareness of environmental issues and to facilitate positive change in local schools. The project’s vision is to save the environment one person at a time. STEP approaches youth to educate them on environmental sustainability issues through conducting interactive and educational workshops.

Going on this program was one of the best things I have ever done! From visiting heritage sites in Melaka to lying on the beaches of Tiomon Island, my experience of Malaysia has surpassed all expectations. This of course was only made possible with the new friends I made on my trip. No description of Malaysia can be complete without mention of the local cuisines. The dishes range from weird to wonderful, but all are delicious, and extremely cheap compared to Australia.

Cultural Connecting

Social awareness in Taipei Undertaking the AIESEC global community development program in Taiwan was one of the most rewarding decisions I've made at UNSW. Firstly, in the depth of a new culture, customs and people, I was constantly off balance and lost sight of all the familiar comforts of home and friends. I was forced to rely on my own personal strengths. Secondly, this experience allowed me to understand myself through the importance of culture and national identity that define the practices of people all over the world. Lastly, nothing can substitute the learning, experiences and friendships I gained through this experience.

Academy of Perspectives Developing youth in Poland

My experience taught me some important life lessons. It taught me how to become a better communicator and a better mentor to youth, as well as valuable survival skills when independent.

Firstly, the experience of teaching teenagers who are transiting from adolescence into adulthood made me learn the importance of empathy. Without understanding the psyche of youth, it is difficult to teach them. We have to first connect – then teach! Youth of today are no longer looking for traditional teacher figures, but a friend and mentor. Secondly, during a snow-ski trip to the Czech mountains I learned how to survive the cold nights and to take care of myself independently. These insights really changed my perspectives on the world and I have returned from the trip a much more mature individual than before.

Child Care in Cambodia (CCC) Impact underprivileged orphans!

The Child Care in Cambodia (CCC) Project offers orphans the opportunity to learn a foreign language such as English, world geography, culture, as well as the importance of education and valuable skills on how to lead their daily lives.

I taught English and raised cultural awareness at an orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was genuinely one of the most amazing experiences and I will tell my grandchildren one day! A friend once told me that going on the GCDP is like pressing the fast forward button in your life and I totally agree. During my experience, I matured as a person, volunteered for social impact and became a leader in the local community.
