Team Member Induction Booklet AIESEC Team Member Program 2012

President’s Address I am so glad that you took the first step to make an impact in this organization. This time last year, I was in the same situation starting off as a member in the local committee. Initially, it was daunting to meet everyone but I have gradually built many lasting friendships over the year. I saw AIESEC as an important step for me to develop myself and build a strong network. To date, I can say that I have made the right decision in joining AIESEC. As the President (LCP) of UNSW, I am responsible for coordinating regional efforts with Presidents from other NSW entities. I report to the State Manager of NSW and the national directors at AIESEC Australia to ensure our local committee maintains membership in this global network. I also provide support and strategic advice to your team leaders (EB) to make sure the organization is growing locally to achieve both local and national goals. For members, I would love to get to know you personally outside of AIESEC. If you need any assistance or support, do not hesitate to get in touch with the EB or myself. We really seek to make your engagement with AIESEC both professional and personable.

If there is any advice I can give to you, It would be to take every opportunity you can in this organization, because you will never know when your experiences become useful later on in your life. As an international student body, we provide opportunities to engage members across Australia through conferences and regional seminars. We also provide leadership opportunities both regionally and locally through new and existing initiatives. The things you can do in AIESEC are truly endless. At the same time, I am interested in your personal development and I hope you can maintain balance with your university studies and other priorities. I look forward to meeting you all individually so you can learn more about the organization and I can learn more about you. Welcome to the big family, welcome to AIESEC!

Warm Regards, Chris Wu Local Committee President

Trisha Shastri Vice-President of Outgoing Exchange “Although somewhat random, I absolutely love being around people! Don't be scared if you see me poking noses, waving crazily and sharing air hugs, it is actually my unique way of showing that I appreciate you as a person.”

Ivan Teong Director of Global Community Development Program “I'm an international student from Singapore, and I like my LAHs and my LORs...it is a way of speaking in Singapore, it doesn't mean anything but Singaporeans always punctuate our sentences at the end with these, so don't get confused when I talk in future!”

Local Committee Structure Every year, AIESEC provides over 7,700 practical experiences in leadership for over 35,000 people in more than 100 countries. At the local level, the AIESECers responsible for delivering quality overseas experiences (GCDP and GG) and team member experiences (TMP) are the president, executive board and the members in respective portfolios. The structure illustrates how you as a member, is accountable for your actions in the local committee. Although each member will be assigned a role within a portfolio function, it is encouraged that members seek opportunities to contribute to other areas of the local committee (given you can also manage your functional tasks at the same time).

The Roadmap to Positive Impact AIESEC is an organization that connects the local student body to the global AIESEC student body. This diagram illustrates the way we as an organization, make positive impact in the world. As a member, sometimes it can be difficult to see the impact you are making to the communities around the world. But actually, without your contributions in running this organization at the local level, the students on campus cannot gain teamwork experience and overseas experiences through our programs. We create positive impact by establishing partnerships in Australia for AIESECers abroad to develop themselves in our country. Previous AIESECers have contributed to software development with Google and volunteering with the Centre for Social Impact. These partnerships are raised and managed by our ICX portfolio function with the support of FN, TM and MAC. We make positive impact by sending students overseas for cultural experiences tied to social issues. Previous AIESECers have contributed to raising awareness about HIV/AIDs, teaching and environmental sustainability. These partnerships are raised and managed by our OGX portfolio function. Our recruitment for exchange participants in GCDP and GG are coordinated by OGX and MAC with support from FN and TM. AIESEC Global Network

Conferences International conferences are run by regional organizing committees and AIESEC International. Members in Australia are starting to participate in international conferences and you will also have the chance as you progress through your AIESEC experience. These conferences run throughout the year, from International Congress, EuroXpro, NLDC, APXLDS to Global Leaders Summit. I leave it your responsibility to research more about them, but here are some photos of international conferences from the AIESEC International Flickr page.

Culture Sugar Cubes At every conference there will be an envelope for each person on the wall. You can use these envelopes to leave messages for delegates who really helped you at the conference or someone you just had a good time with. Conference delegates usually leave small white paper notes that resemble the shape of a sugar cube; hence the name!

Dancing Dancing is a way for AIESECers around the world to communicate with each other. Although AIESECers don’t all speak the same language, dancing is a universal way to show that you are part of this organization. Aside from the obvious health benefits, dancing is a great way to boost confidence and raise energy level in the room. There are special songs that AIESECers over the years have chosen to make into AIESEC Dances. Anywhere you go in the world, an AIESECer will know the dance and be able to do it with you!

Skolling This is a competition developed by AIESECers many years ago and has become a tradition held in every conference. It involves two teams of four representing a group (usually a local committee) where the four team members must each drink a full glass of beer, without spilling, as fast as possible. The person who finishes the glass of beer must raise the glass on top of his/her head before the next team member can begin. The first team to finish all four glasses of beer (without spilling) progress to the next stage until a winner claims the regional or national cup.

11

Culture Roll Call / Chant At conferences, every committee must perform roll calls or chants. This will be either a dance or performance usually accompanied by music. This helps to build conference atmosphere and allow the committee to demonstrate presence in the delegation. When you attend these conferences with AIESEC UNSW, you will be representing us, and as such, you need to show everybody else how awesome we are! The chants for AIESEC UNSW are as follows…

Chant 1 – Hey UNSW@ Hey UNSW@, Hey UNSW@, Yo mamma rhymes with UNSW@ Bend over, red rover The Mardi Gras ain’t over P-A-P-A you don’t know him anyway, Yo PAPA! Chant 2 – Three Us Who’s got 3 U’s? We’ve got 3 U’s! 3 U’s, 3 U’s UNSW! Chant 3 – I like UNSW@ I like UNSW@ and I cannot lie... You other LCs can't deny... When we walk in with our style and our grace, AIESEC New South you'll chase... ... Cause you're SPRUNG!

12

Culture During regional and national conferences, every region will be called upon to perform their respective regional chant. As a representative of the NSW region, you will shout this chant as loud as possible. Just follow the crowd if you are lost and remember to shout “Solidarity” right after we sing the “Solidarity forever” verses.

NSW Regional Chant The New South Wales region is the finest in the land Even though we may act like a sleazy drunken band But if you ask us nicely we will jump up without fear And help you drink your beer Solidarity forever Solidarity forever Solidarity forever For the region will not die The Western States are boring and are lacking any class Melbourne’s rain and drizzly and have a carrot up their arse Queenslanders are stupid and their XXXX we detest For the beer here is the best Solidarity forever Solidarity forever Solidarity forever For the region will not die I love new I love new I love New South Wales I love new I love new I love New South Wales I love new I love new I love New South Wales Go New South Wales!!
