Foreword
Welcome from the Art Department It is our privilege to introduce to you the GCSE Art and Design exhibition for 2021. The students have worked with great enthusiasm, passion and skill throughout these challenging times and we can be extremely proud of their accomplishments. What you see before you is the fruits of their labours, where students have explored both contemporary and historical sources, all taking an individual approach to their art, craft and design making. They have experimented, taken creative risks and shown strong artistic styles in their work. It has been a fast paced and exhilarating year. We have seen students developing their skills in a variety of techniques and processes and have now selected their best and most appropriate work for presentation in this year's exhibition, elements of which have been recorded in this book.
The whole art team thoroughly enjoyed working alongside these bright and talented Aiglonians, and we are certain that their success will be continued into sixth form and the next phase of their education. We look forward to working with those taking IB Visual Arts next year. We hope that you enjoy the exhibition. Kindest regards, Lyndon Evans and Rosie Curtis Art Department

To begin with I had a look at Rauschenberg for inspiration, before moving towards architecture and Zaha Hadid yet still incorporating many abstract ideas that I had seen with Rauschenberg and developing some of my own. I had tried at some points to be realistic with my painting but I had found that it was not my style and what I wanted to do, so I continued on the semiabstract path where I am more concerned about the feeling that my piece gives rather than each exact line and shade. I had decided to continue with my ideologies of architecture as I worked but I found that I also wanted to incorporate my love for music and as I know that many of the world’s most amazing buildings are concert halls, I felt like I could stay within an idea of architecture but also incorporate more musical ideas. When I began I started with a violin on a clay tablet before drawing both a 6

violin and the Sydney opera house in my art book, this then led me to the piece that I am working on for my final assessment, that being an old violin case I have repaired and then painted on. On the top is an abstract version of the Sydney Opera House which alludes to the work of Brett Whitely and on the back side I have painted a violin. The 1734 ‘Spagnoletti’ Guarneri ‘del Gesù’ violin to be exact. So far I am most happy with my two paintings of the Sydney opera house that I have produced as well as the violin I drew in my book. I feel like they are both different in terms of accuracy but still both show what they are imitating to a high level. All of my recent outcomes show what I enjoy in life and how I want to live, freely.

During my GCSE art course, I was able to experiment and explore with many different artists and their styles. I was particularly inspired by artists Joseph Wright of Derby and Caravaggio, each with their own interpretation of the chiaroscuro technique that I tried to imitate. I was also inspired by artist John Constable and his amazing studies of landscapes. I was inspired to paint mountain landscapes which I personally photographed, although, instead of rendering them realistic like Constable’s paintings, I tried an expressive style. My experimentation with the expressionism style led me to be inspired by artist Monet, with his colourfully capturing landscapes, and modern artist Francoise Nielly, using expressionism for portraits. The themes which most inspired me were naturalistic landscapes and portraits.

I experimented with multiple different techniques and skills, from acrylic paintings to clay work. However, the techniques I most focused on were expressionistic acrylic paintings and pencil chiaroscuro. Being the material I use most, I felt confident using pencils, hence I tried to push my pencil skills to new boundaries using the chiaroscuro technique, which I had previously not used as a technique, although it fascinated me. Expressionism was completely new to me, and I decided to work with this technique firstly to experiment. I enjoyed the freedom of interpretation I found with this technique, and chose to keep developing it.
Works I am proud of include my first chiaroscuro self-portrait, along with the expressionist painting of the sunset over the mountains. I am also proud of my original character portrait and the expressionist painting of my shoe with a butterfly on it, which I produced for my art mock examination. My outcomes are all linked by a general theme of nature, either being expressed in a landscape or a person’s face. I am personally very interested in the study of the human face, and I believe that humans and nature should always remain linked.
I initially developed my ideas brainstorming everything on a mind map entitled ‘events’. From there, I chose the path which most interested me: landscapes and portraits. Every project brought me to experiment with something new, bringing to the development of my initial ideas.

Initially, artworks using vibrant and abstract colours really drew me towards them. I started looking at ‘Gathering’ as my main topic for the Events project. Through some of the pieces I did I started to look at facial expressions and facial features. The artist I was inspired by was Francoise Neilly. I was never very good at painting, so I started exploring different materials such as palette knives. I did two artworks inspired by Neilly which turned out to be the material I used for my mock exam piece. At the start, I took multiple pictures with dark and light tones. Looking at my artist, I used yellow for lighter tones and red for darker tones and a splash of different colours around the features of the face. My first outcome inspired by Francoise Neilly was one of my best works. I used acrylic paints instead of oil paints. I had different colours like blue around features like the nose. The eyes on this outcome turned out the best. The meaning behind my outcome was to bring out different features in the face 14

along with the dark and light tones representing darkness and happiness. My favourite part about my outcomes was learning to work with palette knives.

For my project, my main theme was Events and specifically, I focused on portraiture and realism, for example, in my own photography I often had my model in the midst of an action or holding an object. I was particularly inspired by the artist Joseph Wright of Derby and I attempted to mimic his interesting style in my own work. I experimented with a variety of techniques and skills throughout my project like, oil paints, oil pastel, cross-hatching and black and grey shading. I noticed his style heavily included Chiaroscuro techniques and so incorporated that in my own photographs and paintings. I chose to work with these media as I wanted to produce a variety of unique outcomes to develop my portfolio. Initially, I began with some simple portrait photography and drew them with pencil, however, as my project progressed I began learning how to use a camera correctly and took some more professional pictures incorporating aspects of distortion. Some of my favourite outcomes 18

are definitely my photography, particularly, I took photos of a ballerina, had my model hold skulls and used coloured cellophane to create distortion. I’m also proud of my 10 hour exam outcomes, as I feel they accurately reflect my artistic abilities. Finally, I did a large photo realistic piece exploring the idea that most feel sadness in their lives, but cover it up- the blue cellophane represents negative feelings kept within and the normal face is meant to show the happy exterior we sometimes portray.

My main inspiring artists for the project were Giulio D’Anna, Joan Miro, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Starting this project I wanted to explore futurism and abstractionism as I find these styles most diverse and interesting because of a huge variety of techniques and ideas in those styles. Throughout the project I experimented with different techniques about shaping, capturing in motion from pieces of Keith Haring and Giulio D’Anna. The idea of my project was to show how bright, complicated and twisted teenage life can be. With lots of things going through the imagination of people I tried to picture it using different figures, shapes and bright colours to express how tangled and exciting teenage life is. During the project I experimented with lots of different media such as oil paint, acrylic paint, pencil, pen, clay relief, cardboard and others. Some of those experiments were not successful at all, even most of them, but it is a 22

part of learning process and it lets me reflect on it and focus on specific areas more to improve my skills and it makes me proud that I am able to experiment and try something new that only allows me to improve.

The themes from which I was inspired for my most recent art work involve a lot of nature, mainly in relation to the flowers, waves and the connection between the surfer. The art project that I’ve done is made out of clay, which I used the famous technique of carving on it. Carving on clay is, in my opinion, a hard technique that takes a lot of time to be completed with good results, but also, with a lot of practise, the results on my project came out with very good quality, composed of several types of texture. I choose to work with carving on clay pieces because it is my favourite type of manual art work, especially because sometimes the way that I cut the clay in pieces and different shapes reminds me of a doctor during a surgery.

Since the beginning of the year, all of my art projects involved surfing, waves, nature and movement, so I decided not only to keep with the idea, but to put them all together. That is the reality to me because I live in a place in Brazil where surfing and nature is a necessary activity with my life. Surfing made me and my father get to know each other better then ever, made me meet new people and a new style of life. These are the facts that I chose to keep in touch with even being far from home, and the art projects helped me with.

Themes circling around identity, humanity, social change, and society inspire me greatly, as do many artists and photographers who convey these themes in their work. Tracey Emmin, Cindy Sherman, Man Ray, Richard Avedon, Andreas Gursky, Yoshitomo Nara, Julian Schnabel, and Roy Lichtenstein, are just a few examples of artists who inspire me. I have used a variety of artistic techniques, skills and processes this year. Beginning with watercolour to demonstrate a colour scheme and black and white pencil studies to exhibit form and light. I next combined my pencil studies with embroidery in order to bring an element of abstract expressionism into my work, simultaneously experimenting with black and white acrylics. Deciding to zoom further into ‘nonconformist’, slightly abstract techniques, I developed my skills in collage and line drawing so as to gain a broader 30

understanding of other forms in art. Inspired by many 20th century photographers, I decided to this artistic form next, creating ‘unusual’ images using paper cut-outs and mirrors (sometimes using photoshop). I next practised oil paints, creating two large oil paintings (one of which was my final exam) before the whole class practiced our skills in expressive forms of art like continuous line, ink painting, scribble drawings, and blind sketches. Following this, I was able to use clay for the first time, creating a clay relief sculpture of my own with the rest of the class, before I refocused once more on photography and oil painting in preparation for my next mock exam. To develop my initial ideas, I often began by choosing an artist who portrays a similar theme to the one I have in mind. After choosing a variety of their pieces, I de constructed the elements in each one (the different principles of design, for example) and then chose a few elements of their work which I would like to use as inspiration. Next, I created a base for my outcomes (photography studies, pencil sketches, colour studies in 31
watercolour - inspired by the artists’ work) and, from there, I developed my ideas from the ‘ground up’ to create more developed art pieces. My outcomes focus mainly on the events surrounding childhood innocence. The innocence which comes with not caring about, nor abiding by societal standards. Others focus on the events surrounding the concepts of identity and self-expression.

I feel like the English graffiti artist Banksy greatly inspired me with his many representations of rebellion. A theme that inspired me the most would probably be conflicts, as it usually involves violence and the act of fighting back. I decided to choose to paint for this work, this is because paint is easily fixable if there are any mistakes, meaning that if I did something wrong, I can always fix it or at least make it look better later. I think I developed my initial ideas by testing different work pieces then observing which things I did right, and which things I didn’t do right, I would then use my mistakes as a way to correct myself and get better. A work I am proud of is the work I did for my mock exam which happened last term, which was a portrait of someone with their arms crossed. The theme I tried to show in my outcomes was showing examples of insolence.

The artist that inspired me was Chuck close. I was inspired by his self portraits. I used painting, clay making, and drawing skills in my projects. I decided to work with these skills as they are the most appropriate for portraits. To developers my initial idea, I created 2 chuck close inspired portraits. The portrait I am currently working on is nature themed, based off of my clay creation. The theme behind my outcomes is portraits and nature. What I meant to portray behind the leaves is the beauty of things we see all around us daily, such as faces and nature.

The main inspiration for my outcome would be the bands I listen to. They have a violent theme, inspiring the splattered and dripping red and black ink. The self portrait has the logo for my soundcloud metal project, My Last Stand. I used pen, pencil and ink for the outcome. Shading techniques include hatching, cross hatching, and using an eraser to blur graphite. For the dripping and splattered ink, I spilled some ink on the paper. I chose to work with these because I am more capable and comfortable with these, and they have a more straightforward and "metal" feel to it. I first sketched it out with pencil, then I drew over it using a pen. Shading has pencil as well as pen. The outcome possesses meaning, it is not simply a self-portrait incorporating a violent vibe to it. 42

I used and experimented with different types of materials like Indian ink, classic ink, sand water, different types of coloured canvases, clay, mixed material canvas, white colour on black canvas, pencil, oil paints and water paints. I experimented with all these materials in order for me to find inspiration for something that I can dedicate time to perfect and put into quality use in my final outcome. That ended up being only pencil in my first ever exam outcome and only ink from different black ink pens in my second and final exam outcome. By finding inspiration from the internet of objects like skulls, cartoon characters or other which then I researched more about themselves and the artist. After that I would practise with different materials and techniques to recreate them or something that symbolizes them until I am satisfied with a 46

certain outcome. The Work that I am most proud of is a recreation of my living room drawn by only pencil, an outcome heavily influenced by Keith Harring. My first ever exam style outcome, the plan for my final exam outcome and my final exam outcome. The themes that start from the beginning of my art development include war, simplicity, vibrancy, fiction and then transitioned to black and white, complex, Gothic and still fictional. In that period of time I had inspiration from different artists and ideas that heavily influenced me finding my style and executing final outcomes in it.

In my art throughout this year I’ve focused on topics of abstract, warped images and surrealism. I’ve worked with a variety of several portraits and snaps of faces, making my main topic to be people. In my fascination with symbolism I have used tarot, humanization of objects and distortion to represent the ideas of surrealism. I’ve used the inspiration from artists like Lee K. and James Tissot to develop my own ideas and encourage display of my experiments. As well as abstract representations I’ve also focused on makeup, fashion and alternative styling. In this I hope to research into ideas of selfexpression and individuality. I have been photographing, using oil paint/watercolours, chalk and pencils to address all my topics. I experimented with aesthetics through shape and colour, that being demonstrated in my art exam piece where i used shapes 50

and subtle contrast to show opposition and alternation. Along with self-expression I’ve used queer or atypical styles of art and style, hoping to find a way to demonstrate both surrealism and aesthetic arrangements. As a tool I’ve been using digital painting for planning and thumbnails - specifically Procreate as an app on my Ipad Pro to sketch ideas or leave brief notes regarding projects and designs. Later on paper I added definition through tone and lighting later following up with details such as highlighting and texture. As a main overall topic I used people and their differences, using my friends and various celebrities or stylists to study features, colours and convivial of personal ideas. Through my art studies I watched different poses, colour palettes and angles and tried to express humanity and culture by showing each person’s styling in separate photo shoots.

The themes for my project that inspired me are the effect of water pollution on the environment. I used lots of variety in styles with designs, textures and colouring. I used clay sculpting with lots of variety in textures and designs. I did painting with lots of variety in designs. I developed my initial ideas from basic drawings with pencil. I am proud of my two exam pieces which are the drawings with skulls.

For this term’s project, I was largely inspired by ideas of the past, how it can become distorted and how even our most important memories can just be items or symbols we relate to at those moments (for example I relate flowers and snails to the idea of youthful joy). I found myself highly inspired by artwork that incorporates more whimsical or fantastical elements that don't necessarily make logical sense. I chose to use paint for my outcomes as I thought that this would be an effective way to interestingly convey the themes I wanted to explore. I chose to mainly paint portraits as that's generally what I enjoy to paint and I thought that it linked nicely into this project. To develop my initial ideas I attempted multiple outcomes in different media so as to decide on what I was strong in and what would work well with my ideas - this turned out to be oil painting. The works that I am most proud of are my three little practice paintings of bluebells, a snail and blackberries. They just have a certain charm that I hope to be able to recapture in my later artwork. 58

With the theme of Events, I was inspired by works of Moneta Sleet and John Constable. I began by studying works from John Constable, which included oil paintings of natural landscapes and drawings of buildings. I focused on John Constable’s use of colour and highlights to draw attention to certain parts of his pieces. These interested me because in some of his pieces the focus and highlights are in the foreground, whereas in others the eye is drawn to the sky in the background. In one of his images in particular, I enjoyed his use of colour behind a black and white building, because it shows the detail in the sky and creates a contrast in an image. When creating work inspired by John Constable, I began by taking photos inspired by his work by using the area around me, such as landscape and buildings, and then tried to replicate one of his paintings by doing an oil pastel study, in which I focused on blending the sky and its pinks, purples, and blues, but also using stippling in the 62

foreground to depict the trees that he painted. I also created a pencil study of a church inspired by one of his drawings, where I focused on accurately depicting the lightest and darkest tones, while keeping the structure of the figure. Afterward, I moved on to more modern works, which included photographs made by Moneta Sleet during the American civil rights movement in the 1950s. I studied a range of his photos that focused on events in big crowds, as well as events between mother and daughter, which used very light and dark tones to highlight shadows. I began by taking photos inspired by his, by using my room-mates as figures with light behind them, and by capturing moments between mother and daughter. I then chose two of these mother-daughter images, and created two black and white acrylic paintings out of them; because it was my first time using acrylic paint, I found it very difficult to blend the colours to depict the detailed shadows, but then realized that I would be able to do them with patience and time. When creating these two paintings, I focused on being able to show the detail in the facial features of the mother and her daughter and the highlights 63
to create a realistic image that demonstrates where the light is coming from.

I was inspired by fashion in all aspects. From high fashion to fast fashion. Since I was little I was surrounded with all types of designers starting from my aunt who is a fashion designer to my mom who is an interior designer. It reminds me of my childhood but it also inspires my future because I want to work in fashion. Some well known fashion illustrators that inspired me are: René Gruau, Bil Donovan and Jason brooks. I usually use oil painting because I think it's very free. You can move and blend properly without letting it dry. I also try new textures with different things I find on my way. For example, paper towels helped me to create texture for the most important part of my mock exam. I was always sure I wanted to do something related to fashion so I started off this project with high fashion and explored my way into different types of fashion and fashion illustration. After 66

thinking about what I wanted to do for my final project I figured out that I had never tried a portrait which is a big element in the fashion industry. For me taking photographs is one of the things that make me the proudest, therefore, some of the pictures I took in the first term of figures and my fashion photos are my favourite pieces.

For my artwork I was inspired by people and culture. The piece that I have created to make is a very old fashioned pitcher which is made out of clay. Since I am exploring the themes of people and culture I decided to create something that was very close to heart for me. The pitcher that i have created was useful in my grandmother's daily life, when she would go and get water to bring home before going to school. Back at the time, there was no bottled water, especially in Chechnya, so people had to go to wells and get water for their families and pitchers like these were used. My initial idea developed when I was looking on what to make for my exam, I was initially thinking of painting ancient towers that are located in Chechnya and Ingushetia but came to the conclusion that I would want to do something that would bring back memories of Chechnya in the old times, before the war 70

had started and everything was renovated. For the piece that I am doing I had used clay and hand built the whole thing upwards. It was a complicated process I got through with it. I had added a little design on the neck of the beaker but did not want to overcomplicate it and wanted to make it authentic.

The artists or themes that inspired me were Banksy who does graffiti which draw my attention because graffiti usually has very strong meanings that could represent something bad that can impact a lot of people just by looking at it or it could have a good meaning which can bring other feelings, thoughts and emotions. Some techniques, skills and processes I used were to be patient and problem solve with my work. This helped in the way that I could take my time and have a better outcome than just rushing through my work and have an outcome not that good. Also if I made a mistake being patient was key because this way I could think of a way to make my mistake look good or figure out something to fix it and continue the way I wanted. I developed my initial ideas by looking at other artists like Banksy and some other paintings that I don't know the artist names, this led me to all my ideas, therefore I came up with many different sketches that then led me to my final outcome. Some 74

examples of my work that I am proud of are the pictures that I took with my brother and then did a painting out of it, also an elephant that I just painted recently, a clay model that I did, and a few more simple sketches that I made but never added too much detail or made then into a final outcome piece.

A theme that inspired me during my art journey was immigration. Growing up in a country where civil wars affected very badly and most of our people immigrated, and it is very personal for me. During my artwork, I found myself using different pencils with different tones to do with most of my work by either doing back and forth or hatching. I chose to work with these because of my theme. I want my work to be black and white, no colour, so my art can express as much as possible. The theme of my outcomes is to show and express what my people went through during the civil wars. Numerous people lost their lives, homes, and loved ones including innocent women and kids during these civil wars. These works are for those who lost their lives to give us, new generations, better life, and peace.

I’ve always viewed different versions of myself as a part of who I am. Depending on the time, place, and frame of mind, I feel that I’m always a slightly different person. Each of my three paintings are representing different versions of me depending on the environment I’m surrounded by, the way different factors can modify me as a person, and how the different versions of myself influence one another. Past versions of myself, for example, had very high expectations for my future self which I’m nowhere near meeting - I always aspired to be incredibly academically successful, but I feel like I’ve been failing my younger self recently. I'm no longer getting outstanding marks, I'm less motivated, and I'm not succeeding in academics as much as I should be. Law was something I dreamt of pursuing, but now I’m not even sure if I'm capable of getting into a 82

decent university. The blue painting with me as a younger child, is portraying the pressure my expectations from years ago (and my younger versions of myself) cast on me. I’ve travelled to a considerably large number of countries, and I think every single one of them helped me develop as a person, and build my personality. The painting with a morphed figure of myself shaped into a globe-like form, is representing how interacting with various cultures sort of taught me who I am as a person. The green painting is a portrayal of myself in various states of mind - whether its anger, regret, or hopelessness that I’m feeling, it has a huge impact on my demeanour. I’ve spent the vast majority of my time for the last couple of months stressing over exams, letting go of things, and this painting is inspired by the overwhelming impact my thoughts and moods have on me sometimes.

I looked into the technique of morphing portraits for this particular project using oil paint. I was searching for a suitable running theme in all my paintings, and that’s when I stumbled across a painting by Carl Beazley. Beazley mainly focuses on distorted portraits- and inspired by his work, I figured morphed faces would be the perfect match for what I’m doing with the theme events. I think I’ve learned quite a bit through developing this project, both technique wise and also who I want to be as an artist.

As this is my first year taking art classes, at the beginning of the year I wasn’t completely sure what my project theme could be and how I was going to develop it. After doing some research, which I spent quite a lot of time on, I found an artist Cindy Sherman. Her main focus is photography, mostly portraits. What I find interesting is that she used the same model, herself, for all the works, but created a completely different character and story for each one. That inspired me to specify on portraits as a main theme of my project. I took several photos of my friend Mitsuki, changing her makeup and overall image for different photo shoots. The next step was to do the pencil sketches of the photos and after to do a refined portrait of her. I started with pencil and pen drawings, but as I got more confident, I started using oil paints, because I understood it’s the material I’m mostly familiar with. I used different techniques 86
YEAR 11 ART EXHIBITION BOOK | 2020 - 2021
and ways of blending to find the best way of using oils. After painting two or three portraits of her and my other close friends, I’ve decided to do a bigger size and more detailed painting. It took me a long time, but it’s the work I’m proud of the most, because it required actual knowledge in how to blend colours of the skin and pay more attention to details and shadows of the portrait. The main idea I was developing throughout the year was to capture moments with people who mean a lot to me, such as my closest friends and members of my family. For my last outcome, which will be a 10-hour examination, I’ve taken a few photographs of my mom with my brother, who are ones of the most important people in my life. Overall, I think there’s still a room for improvement of my techniques and ideas, and I can’t wait to spend my time on developing fluency in my painting skills and creating new outcomes.

Throughout the year I have been experimenting with repetition and pattern. It started off with my first research on horrockses fashion where I identified the repetition of flower patterns. From then on I wanted to incorporate a nature element into my work. This element would make it easy for me to identify patterns within nature such as plants and corals. I practiced my sketching techniques using shading variations such as cross hatching etc. I repeated this with ball point pens as well. I also worked with water colours for the presentation of my work, I used chalk and colours to create flow, I took photographs of different people to focus on facial structures and for my final mock exam in January I used acrylics which was what I was mostly families with. I chose the topic of repetition and pattern as this would open many options for me for what I could create. I mostly focused on genetics based variation and natural occurrences as this is something I am very passionate 90

about. At the start I wanted to focus on the detail of flowers, then on the details of humans and finally I came to the conclusion of evaluating myself as I had something special about my pattern and repetition in my body. This led to the painting of my twisted spine, in cooperating the flow from earlier practices as well as bone structure. My initial ideas evolved throughout the year slowly creating a nice transition in my artwork. Earlier in the year I had focused on drawing one of my classmates with colourful chalk and created detail with it. I am pleased with the outcome as I was able to create an accurate replica of the student with “unnatural” body colours such as blue and purple and yet still make it detailed. However, my best artwork so far is the definition of the blue tones acrylic painting of my spine. This was an extreme challenge especially when creating a 10 hour piece only consisting of the colour blue. I am proud of myself that I managed to mix over 20 shades of different blues to create a realistic replica. I wanted to use a variation of colour and tones to show a twist to reality which can be seen in my final piece. I feel like I achieved this through my painting by putting myself out there. 91
Overall, my theme of pattern and repetition shifted a lot throughout the year as I worked with many different skills and different aspects of pattern and repetition.

For my project, I have chosen the theme ‘retro’. I’ve always loved the retro look, so I thought it would make sense to choose it. The artist that inspired me a lot to do this theme was actually an artist I had seen before and his name is Fulaleo. Most of his work is working with the retro type style which I think is exactly what I was going for. At first the techniques I used were just pencil drawing sketches and such. I did this mostly since it is what i feel the most confident in. However, as I developed my theme more and more, I wanted to try something new. So I tried using water paints. Doing this was surprisingly well fitting and good looking for my project, it was very fun! So I continued for a couple of my pieces and on practise sketches. One of the things I looked out for a lot was to make sure I used a lot of colours, since that's what he likes to use quite a bit. The artist also puts a lot of shapes in his backgrounds which are very 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s. One of my favourite works that I've done is the 94

painting I did of one of my best friends Masha. I used watercolor paints, and I think that blended out super well to create her skin texture.

I was inspired by the theme of emotions and how we can’t control them and need to bottle them up. I used Welding, plasma cutting and angle grinding to get the finished products. I initially learnt my skill from Mr Willet a former art teacher. I absolutely love how you can “Draw” in more than two dimensions. I developed my skills by using small sheets of metal and tap welding them together, then moving on to welding metal rods together. I am proud of my first metal sculpture that is now being displayed in the dining room. The meaning behind my art is that they can be interpreted differently depending on your culture or even how you look at it.

I have always been attached to Art. It has always caught my attention. Over this course, I have been able to express myself through using different techniques, colour, methods, styles. Art has calmed me and is one of the only subjects that I can choose what I would like to create without having a right or wrong answer. I am very passionate about it as I have progressed a lot throughout this year. It has really helped me reflect on myself and what I can improve because there is always room for improvement. In my artwork I am focusing on people (facial structure, eyes, lips) and nature (flowers, petals, leaves). I like this combination because I feel like they go well together and complement each other as they are both natural features but I can choose what colour, shape or type to explore. My goal is to try to contrast them in order to have a balance, without it being too much.

In the beginning of this year we were given a task to choose a couple of pictures from a booklet that was given to us. I found similarities in each of them they all had to do with motion. This is how I came up with my theme of movement. While I researched more about my theme I found artists that inspired me like Keith Haring. I have been developing this theme throughout the year and have been learning and utilizing some of them to present my artwork. Most of my artwork have been paintings. Nevertheless, I have been using different techniques such as hatching, cross hatching, and stippling. Not only this but I used my ongoing theme by displaying it through numerous different styles, from photographs, to clay slab carvings. My initial ideas developed as the year progressed for example, I started off by photographing light painting but found that although the outcome looked impressive it was quite an easy and simple task for me to fulfil. I decided to challenge myself 106

more by implementing another step which was transforming my own photographs into paintings and drawings. For instance, I am proud of an experimental art piece that I did with pen and ink. I used water to dissolve the ink so that it would spread and create more value. I am currently working on making a detailed pencil drawing of a photograph I took of an apple falling in water. This will clearly demonstrate the progress that I have made with my theme of movement and I think it will be a great piece to end the year with.

I very much enjoy using mirrors and reflections in my artworks as I feel it looks really cool and it also allows me to show things from different angles, for example the front and back of someone's head. This was inspired by Yayoi Kusama (search her up, it's funny), a Japanese artist that likes putting mirrors in patterned rooms to make cool effects. I decided to make a clay relief tile for my project and used some techniques such as sticking clay on the clay and carving down into the clay (pretty much I made a clay tile), to show different depths in the image. This idea originated from last term when we did a clay tile project in class. I am very proud of my clay tile as I feel it has improved a lot since last term and now shows more details. The outcome has very little to no meaning behind it, i just like mirrors and clay so why not do both in one project and try to have some fun.

The artist that inspired me was Steven Holl, a New York-based American architect and watercolorist. His conceptual formulations to create real buildings that incorporate a signature use of color, an impression of ‘poetry’ within physical places, and a constant preciosity of his foundational architectural sentiment. Furthermore, the major theme in his work is the impact of light on structures. Steven Holl explored the way natural light reflected off of buildings at different times of the day and in various weather conditions. In my opinion, the Loisium Visitor Center was designed by irregular patterns and polygons. The texture of the building was made by a material that can be reflected by light, which shows a strong sense of shape. What I did was draw with a pencil the different perspective of the Loisium Visitor Center, elaborate the shapes, then design 114

with related concepts and themes. Furthermore, I added more of my own ideas to the design. My initial idea was developed after drawing out the Loisium Visitor Center, the irregular patterns on the exterior of the building attracted me. The buildings were formed by different polygons. I think I’ll take the concept of different shapes and patterns as my reference. Moreover, Steven Holl uses light to highlight the structure of the architects, this gave me an inspiration of making an architectural sculpture with lots of spaces. As well as building the structure with different shapes. The works that I’m proud of are pencil drawings. This is because the drawing demonstrated my ideas well. The meaning and theme of my sculpture and design is using spaces to show the structure throughout my design. Furthermore, when the light gets through the sculpture the shapes make the light different.
