Back to the Mountain

FROM THE HEAD MASTER & BOARD OF DIRECTORS Whether you have been away for only a few months or many decades, we are pleased that you have chosen to come back to the mountain for this exceptional gathering of Aiglonians from across the globe. In the seventy years of our school, this is undoubtedly the single largest event of its kind. This “retour à la source” is a testament to the enduring influence of an education at Aiglon College. We hope that over the next few days you catch up with old friends, make new friends and brush shoulders with people whom you may have never met, but with whom you share a profound and common story. Tony Jhangiani Jashanmal Richard McDonald Chairman of the Board of Directors Head Master

Morning Meditation

The 70th Anniversary Alumni Committee has invited alumnus Michael McCabe (Delaware, 1970) to deliver a traditional and inspirational meditation. After his time at Aiglon, Michael continued his studies at Duke University, later becoming Deputy Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the USA under the Clinton administration. Michael will address how an education at Aiglon shaped his career and life path. LOCATION The meditation will take place in The Hall (16), situated in the now renamed Parsons Building. Due to limited seating, this will be a standing event with reserved seats for those who require them. If you did not register on Friday, you will be able to do so in the Hall before Meditation. The School Shop will also be open from 08h00 until 09h00. MASTER PLAN PRESENTATION Following meditation, there will be an expedition briefing to explain the afternoon activities. You can then get a head start on the mountain, or you are welcome to stay for a special presentation about Aiglon’s Campus Master Plan and the future development of the school (see pages 48-51). 20 | WEEKEND PROGRAMME

SATURDAY, 29 JUNE | 11H00

Expeditions

Stay in the Hall after Meditation for the expedition briefing. We might not summit the Dents du Midi this afternoon, but we will explore the familiar area of Bretaye together. Please be sure to bring your lanyard as well as a water bottle and clothing suitable to the type of walking you will be doing. ROUTES Mountain transport information is available on pages 8-11. Aiglon Summer School An experience like none other. Send your child or grandchild to Aiglon’s Summer School for a unique two-week experience in the Alps. Young people have the chance to hike a small peak, learn new skills such as orienteering and camp craft, enjoy teamwork and relax around the camp fire. Students leave with greater confidence and knowledge of themselves, and understanding of others. This offer is for a two-week session at Aiglon’s Summer School in July 2020.

Beaverbrook Golf The former estate of Lord Beaverbrook, in the Surrey Hills near London. Today, the house and 400-acre property have been converted into a luxury hotel, restaurant, and spa. But did you know there’s an eponymous private golf course right next door? But make no mistake, Beaverbrook is golfing at its best. The extraordinary course is ranked among the finest in the world. Designed by David McLay Kidd and eight-time major champion Tom Watson, no expense was spared to construct this masterpiece. Jonathan Fackelmayer has generously donated a four-ball.

Guided Tour of CERN Anybody can take a tour of CERN (the largest particle physics laboratory in the world), but not like this one—unless he or she has connections. And we just happen to have one of the best connections available: Aiglon alumni parent, Director and distinguished particle physics pioneer Dr. Tejinder Virdee. He has offered to lead a group of up to ten people through the famous Geneva complex, including a look inside cathedral-sized experiment caverns 100m underground, where the 27-km-long LHC lives. This is a unique opportunity, even if you know nothing about particle physics!

Swiss Cow Bell Donated by the FOAC USA this traditional cow bell is specially produced for Aiglon by foundry Albertano, a family business in Switzerland since 1850. The bell weighs 4kg with a diameter of 16cm. The inscription around the bell reads “Aiglon College 1949-2019”. The bell’s leather collar, as seen in the photograph, shows the Swiss flag and the Aiglon College crest with decorative edelweiss flowers. This one of a kind bell comes in a beautiful presentation box. Available for collection in Villars or may be shipped at buyer’s expense. 32 | FOAC US AUCTION

Aiglon Chapel Service

Many alumni will remember chapel attendance in the small, white English church at the centre of the village. In the mid-1990s, Aiglon purchased this chapel for its continued use. Since this time it has been used for regular chapel services, special concerts and events. We invite all who wish to join us for a special 70th anniversary service, with time for singing and reflection in the style that many will fondly remember and with respect to our various traditions. CHAPLAIN The Rev’d John Murdoch is the Minister of St John’s Kirk of Perth, Scotland. Formerly an Army Chaplain, John became the Chaplain at Fettes College, and later at Christ’s Hospital, before becoming Chaplain at Aiglon from 1994-1998. While in Villars, three of Diana and John’s six children were at Aiglon for a time, with the younger three attending La Garenne. LOCATION & ACCESS The Aiglon Chapel is located in the centre of Villars behind the property of the Villars Palace and across the street from the Hotel Eurotel. The chapel’s address is Route des Hôtels 26. Please note that the chapel has no toilet facilities. 36 | WEEKEND PROGRAMME

SUNDAY, 30 JUNE | 11H00

Sunday Mountain Brunch

We conclude the formal activities of Aiglon’s 70th Anniversary with a final meal and afternoon together in the most appropriate of places, Bretaye. Following the chapel service you are invited to take the train, or walk if you are feeling brave, up to the Crazy Moose Restaurant located one train stop below Bretaye at Les Bouquetins. TRANSPORT & ACCESS Please reference the Practical Information section of this guide (page 8-11) for important information regarding mountain transport and tickets for the weekend. Tickets should be purchased at registration, at the train station or be given with your hotel as a “Free Access Card” pass. For those extra mobility needs, please note that there is no wheelchair toilet access. CONCLUSION The brunch finishes at approximately 14h00 at which time the Aiglon events for the 70th Anniversary are officially concluded. We hope you have enjoyed your time and have more exciting plans with family and friends! WEEKEND PROGRAMME | 37

Aiglon Today

THE SCHOOL HERE AND NOW In case you have been away for a while, you may want to know what Aiglon’s programme looks like today. A lot has changed, but we also hope that you will see how much has remained the same. Here are a few highlights about what our students are doing today. If you want to learn more, just ask a staff member! THE IB AT AIGLON In 2010, the school introduced the two-year Diploma Programme (DP) for Years 12 and 13. The IB is best known for its academic breadth, with students taking six subjects rather than the three or four that are customary in the British A-level system. Many staff and alumni, however, would argue that what is most distinctive is the ‘DP core’ requirement. Candidates are required to study the theory of knowledge and show evidence of participation in creativity, action, and service projects. An extended essay research paper is also mandatory. COLLEGE & CAREERS Beginning in senior school, a dedicated College and Careers Counselling Department works individually with students to mentor and guide them through IB course selection, career research and the university search and application process. Formal programmes are in place for students to fully understand the expectations of the years that follow their Aiglon education. The department consists of qualified and expert counsellors who are familiar and trained in admissions practices and procedures around the world. EXPEDITIONS, SKI & SPORT Yes, expeditions are still a core part of the Aiglon education! With minimum requirements ranging from 7 to 12 per year based on year group, students are out every term, and in all weather conditions, on a variety of expeditions. Even our youngest junior students will summit 3,000m peaks! Skiing remains a core part of the curriculum for all students, but those wishing to compete at a high level can also join our Alpine Development Squad for year-round training. 40 | AIGLON TODAY

Scholarship Programme

CLASS OF 2019 TESTIMONY “The impact of Aiglon will forever stay with me. These last two years have equipped me with endless experiences which have forged the characteristics I need to become a global leader. The opportunities that I have embraced, ranging from standing at the top of Dents du Midi to being admitted to NYU Abu Dhabi, would not have been made possible if it wasn’t for the Aiglon community and their generosity. The friendships I have made, the teachers who have taken me through this journey, and the place that I would gladly call home, will always remain a part of me.” - Rithy Thorn (Le Cerf, Cambodia) OUR PROGRAMME TODAY Rare in the world of Swiss boarding schools, Aiglon proudly supports over 15 students each year on full scholarship thanks to the generosity of its parent and alumni communities. A highly competitive programme, these scholars come to Aiglon from all over the world bringing a profound richness and diversity to the student body. Our scholars go on to achieve great things both at Aiglon and after graduation. Aiglon Tomorrow THE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN

While we look back and celebrate 70 extraordinary years of growth and development at Aiglon, much of our energy remains focused on the future. A key part of this is the envisioning of Aiglon’s campus for the decades ahead. There have been important milestones in the establishment of the school’s Campus Masterplan. In 2008 the approval of an official planning zone was a vital step enabling the school to plan with confidence the development of its future facilities. Since then the Masterplan has evolved, taking account of facilities already developed, new acquisitions

made, along with planned new constructions and major renovations and conversions. The last eight years have notably seen the creation of the Tony Jashanmal Sports Centre, a new Exeter boarding house and the conversion of the upper part of the former Exeter building (now the Parsons building), including a Centre for Enquiry and improved classrooms. There have been a range of acquisitions and conversions of adjacent properties, including the Post Office and the Gendarmerie. The purchase and major ongoing renovation of the Cerf Hotel as a

girls’ boarding house, the almost completed renovation of Clairmont and the creation of a new Delaware, opened in 2006, mean that the school can offer an ever-improving quality of residential accommodation. This focus is essential for Aiglon to remain attractive and appropriately positioned in a highly competitive boarding school market; and the current version of the Masterplan makes provision for a further new boys boarding house, allowing for the redeployment of Belvedere. Our campus has long been criticized, and with justification, for having a poor sense of arrival. This is addressed within the Masterplan, which envisions a central hub, just to the east of the Belvedere-Parsons complex, accessed from the street below.

A significant feature of the new hub would be a student well-being centre, combining both leisure and study at the heart of the school. Aiglon’s campus is characterized by a wide variety of architectural styles. Little by little, and without destroying the integrity of existing buildings of a distinctive style, we are seeking to develop a more consistent appearance, and one that harmonizes with our alpine setting and its traditional architectural vernacular. In short, we are ambitious to ensure that Aiglon’s unique and distinctive Guiding Principles can inhabit a suitable and sustainable setting for the foreseeable future, a ‘village within a village’ that can be both an inspiring environment for learning and a warm and attractive home to our students from around the globe.

music suite; practice and instrumental teaching rooms; and a spacious foyer suitable for learning activities, exhibitions and receptions.

Next Steps

ASSEMBLY & ARTS BUILDING The bold centrepiece of the Campus Masterplan is the Assembly and Arts building. The planned facility, designed by Swiss architectural firm Dürisch & Nolli, addresses a key part of Aiglon’s daily routine: the bringing together of our diverse community regularly for our time-honoured morning meditation. We are outgrowing the current hall, which will in due course become the school’s restaurant, and we are very stretched in our provision of high quality spaces to promote music and the performing arts. The architects have faced the challenge of designing a space that is capacious, versatile, inspirational and meets the exigencies of ambitious and creative learning experiences. We are keen for it to fit within the architectural landscape of our campus. We also want it to be both an outward looking and inward looking space: natural light, transparency and access to our exceptional view have been priorities. The design includes a versatile performance hall with a capacity of over 450; a studio theatre; a smaller double-height recital space; a digital 50 | AIGLON TOMORROW

It is anticipated that the detailed design phase will have been completed and approved by the end of 2019. The project presents a very significant funding challenge for the school, a major part of which we hope can be met by the philanthropic participation of the wider Aiglon community. We have already received a number of important gifts and pledges; in the year ahead we will be reaching out to our community to ensure that this transformational facility can be realized in the very near future.

“We have set a benchmark of excellence in our new buildings, which helps us to reflect on how we can improve some of our older buildings.”
