Welcome In 1949, our school was founded by Mr John Corlette with a vision for a new kind of education. An education which would take students into the natural world – and which would ensure the balanced development of mind, body and spirit. Seventy years later, over a long weekend in June, Aiglonians travelled from all over the world, returning to Villars to celebrate that vision – and our special community – with expedition, meditation and, of course, old and new friends. Welcoming so many of you back to campus was truly wonderful. And with representatives from almost every single class since 1949 in attendance, it was also a truly unique event. To mark the occasion – and to enable everyone who couldn’t make it this time to share in the moment – we created Seventy Things, the book you hold in your hands; a celebration of our community, our values and a long weekend in June. Back to the future
One weekend, more than 700 guests – and a whole lot of stories. From hanging on the phone in Clairmont to beds that dipped in the middle, the memories came flooding back. 2 AIGLON THE WEEKEND
arbara Rohner (Clairmont, 1995) is amazed how beautiful Clairmont’s new kitchen is. But that enthusiasm pales in comparison to her excitement at revisiting a tiny box room, four flights up at the top of the house. “This is where the phone was!” Barbara explains. “I spent so much time in here! I was always on the phone – there were no cellphones in those days. So, I was always saying ‘I have to go to call my mother, my father, my boyfriend…’” Touring the campus – whether after five years or 50 years – can be an emotional experience, as Todd Barbey (Clairmont, 1967) points out. “It’s so exciting to be back. And Clairmont is so modern! Sliding glass doors and everything! It’s absolutely staggering,” he says. “My memories are of how the beds would dip so much you had to sleep on your side. But it was a truly holistic education, way ahead of its time.” Over at Belvedere, Chris Simmons (Belvedere, 1967) is remembering his old room. “My room was right up at the top level in the back corner. We were away from the command centre so, yes, there were some shenanigans that went on in those top levels, though I couldn’t possibly name names!” Like Todd, Chris sees his Aiglon education as “an integral part of growing up. In part, it made me what I have become today.” Shenanigans also form part of Peder Mansson’s (Belvedere, 1977) Aiglon memories. “I remember fooling around with, you know, the showers, the water system or the electricity.” His son Carl (Belvedere, 2013) claims not to remember doing anything untoward. “But expedition was a fun time. Let’s just say that,” he says, mysteriously. However, he is in no doubt as to his best times in the house: “Belvedere winning everything!” he declares. As she chats in what was her first Aiglon room, Marie Louise Scio (Clairmont, 1995) says being back is

an emotional experience. “I came from Argentina, which back in the 90s was virtually the same as coming from the moon!” she says. “Coming in here, I almost cried, it brings back so many memories. It was such an amazing experience. And I was a good girl! I was so square and Barbara was so naughty. We were a great couple!” Later, and while acclaimed pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet provides a beautiful musical backdrop in the Oudang Room, Marie Louise and Barbara share their memories and advice of being

house captains with current pupils Layla Goldberg (Clairmont, Year 13), daughter of Michelle Goldberg (Exeter, 1988), and Luiza Aguilar Guimaraes (Clairmont, Year 13), who have taken up their posts this year. Layla says the best thing about being house captain is “attending to everyone’s needs. Making sure everyone’s happy.” Marie Louise agrees: “Every single girl comes to you with their personal problems: some small, some pretty big. You just have to learn to deal with it, but that’s a good thing.” THE WEEKEND AIGLON 3

EARS. HUGS. WHOOPS OF excitement. Meeting long lost friends can be emotional, inspiring and surprising all at once – but mix it up with a packed campus, glorious sunshine and that view, and you have all the ingredients necessary for a triumphant evening on the mountain. Tanya Ogilvie White (Exeter, 1987) and Lisa Machamer (Exeter, 1985) are friends on Facebook but hadn’t seen each other for more than 20 years – until they met again in front of Les Collonges at the Friday night barbecue. Both were bowled over by seeing each other – and so many of their fellow Aiglonians. “The only thing that comes close to this is an international diplomatic conference!” Tanya declared. “You get the same mix of people from different cultures. But this is more fun!” Lisa agreed. “There’s an opportunity to find like-minded people and with people from Aiglon, you might

even get the momentum to start something new.” And then there’s that view, as Nicole Chow (Le Cerf, 2015) and Oliver Patrick (Belvedere, 2016) – who hadn’t seen each other since graduation – pointed out. “The campus is so special. I showed my boyfriend where I took classes, where I stayed and where I fell over in winter!” Nicole said. “The best bit was seeing my old boarding house – it’s completely different and yet still the same.” Propped up by a hay bale, Christopher Powell Harlow (Clairmont, 1967) recalled a brief yet impactful career as Aiglon’s publishing magnate. “We ran an alternative magazine called Penguin,” he

More than 350 alumni attended the Welcome BBQ on Friday afternoon. Friends reunited was emotional!

remembered. “We did it very late at night and downstairs and hid everything. We borrowed the machine stencils, and then we sold the magazine under our jackets. Sadly, we only got through three different editions before they found out who was doing it…” Charlotte Kemp (née Jensen) (Exeter, 1981) and Shuja Jashanmal (Belvedere 1983) were astounded by the fact that the notoriously steep climb to Alpina wasn’t nearly as steep as they remembered it. “Is it because we’re adults?” pondered Shuja. “I used to carry your sister’s skis, up here, do you remember? What can I say, I’m a gentleman!” No Swiss celebration is complete, of course, without the music of the alphorn

and yodellers. Alphornist Marc-Antoine Grec has been playing for 40 years. In keeping with the mood of happy reflection, he remembered the act of generosity which allowed him to play. “When I was young I played in a brass band, but once I started working I stopped the music. But one misty evening, I was sitting on my front lawn and heard this magical sound. “When I mentioned it to a neighbour he said that he was the one playing – and that he had three alphorns for sale. I said that I had just finished building my house and had a small baby. So, he said: ‘Take one, and pay later.” And the rest, as many reunited Aiglonians had cause to reflect, is history. Gringos
As all Aiglonians know, Gringos is the forbidden place. Good Aiglonians don’t go to Gringos. Really good Aiglonians don’t even know that Gringos exists. Which is why none of the class of 2008 or 2009 made it to Gringos. They didn’t dance all night, they didn’t have a glass or two of wine and they most definitely did not gossip into the small hours. Not a one. As can be seen from these photographs. So why some of them had sore heads on their way to Bretaye on Saturday morning, we simply cannot say.

Saturday 29 June: Meditation
On Saturday morning, Michael McCabe (Delaware, 1970), former Deputy Administrator of the Envionmental Protection Agency, delivered a moving and inspiring meditation.
I first visited Aiglon 55 years ago – it was 1964 and I was 12 years old. My father had been transferred to Geneva, the international school in Geneva was full and one of my father’s colleagues recommended Aiglon, so we decided to visit. It was one of those magical summer days that you get occasionally – where the mist and clouds envelope Villars, and it was like stepping into an alternate reality portal. My kids’ generation would probably say it was like stepping onto platform 9¾ at King’s Cross station – entering a new reality. Now, I’m not saying that I developed magical talents here at Aiglon, but it was an experience that really did form the foundation of who I became – and I’m sure that that’s the same for many of you. My experiences at Aiglon also gave me a number of the tools that I would use not only to navigate life, but also to deal with what was going to be a fundamental transformational change for me, and that was not my return to America, not my going to college, not launching my career in environment and energy. It wasn’t getting married and having children – which actually happened later. It was that, at the age of 32, I had my life turned upside-down by a diagnosis of MS [multiple sclerosis]. I’m sure that a lot of you have had to deal with transformational change, whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a job, a sense of who you are or a dashing of your hopes and dreams. And at first, as you may also have found, I didn’t know how to deal with it. The diagnosis was a fundamental disruption, and I had to find resources to draw on. I did a lot of reading, including Victor Frankl’s book, Man’s Search for Meaning – which is Frankl’s account of his experience in four concentration camps, and how he overcame despair by finding meaning and purpose. His message really resonated. Just recently, I reread Frankl’s book. I wanted to see if it held up after 40 years. I found that not only did it hold up, but that it has a tremendous number of lessons

that we can learn today. But it also made me realise that a lot of the lessons that I learned here at Aiglon were ones that had fundamentally supported me through this period. And perhaps nowhere is that more true than when it comes to expedition. I’m sure that everyone here recognises the experience of charting expeditions with very aggressive objectives, only to find that weather intervened, or something else intervened, to require us to go in a totally different direction to avoid a disastrous outcome. And that’s what happened when I had to confront MS – I had to, to chart a new course. The expeditions that I remember best – apart from one great one climbing the Dents du Midi on a perfect day – were the ones that had an element of disaster. But it is the ones where I had to adjust in order to get back in one piece that really stick in my mind. My most dramatic example is of when the ski team went to spend two days above the Aletsch glacier. On the first day a snowstorm moved in – and stayed for another four days. We only had food for two days. We rationed the sausage, we rationed the dried soup, and, of course, we rationed the ubiquitous bread and chocolate. Although I think that we probably went through the chocolate quicker than anything else. We focused on staying warm and moving around as much as we could. Thank goodness the hut had an ample supply of kindling, which allowed us to have some heat in the stove, and also boil that wonderful dried soup. Our purpose was simple: to keep up our spirits, to work as a team, but also to focus spiritually, to ensure the conditions did not get us down. I remember the snow becoming so intense that all the windows blacked out. We ended up in the dark for almost five days. In the end, we told our guides, “You’ve got to let us out!” What we didn’t know was that the Swiss Army had already been alerted – but our guides were not about to let the Swiss Army come and rescue us. Oh no. In the end, of course, on the fifth day, we made it down the glacier,
without the assistance of a rescue mission, to a place where the bus met us, and we got back to Aiglon safely. The lesson – along with the other expedition lessons – was that when you have the spiritual basis for moving forward, for keeping your spirits up, for working with other people, you can make it through. I mentioned Frankl’s book, and his main conclusions were that there is meaning in every moment of life. No matter what the circumstances, although those circumstances may be pretty grim at times, you have to work to find that meaning. You have to adapt when the conditions require. You have to recalibrate. And that has been my experience. But one thing I remembered in rereading the book was that I never liked the title: Man’s Search for Meaning. I thought it was ponderous – a little preposterous, even. So, I decided to look up the original German title, which is ...trotzdem Ja zum Leben sagen or, in English, ‘nevertheless, say Yes to Life’. I think that’s the attitude you need to weather a transformational change in your life. And the kind of experiences that I had at Aiglon helped me develop the tools and perspective to move through what was a very difficult period, and which continue to help me as my disease progresses – because I have progressive MS and, while I gladly accept that label politically, being a progressive, I’d rather not have to deal with it as a disease! In the end it all takes me back to expedition. When you’re on a path, when you think that you’re headed in one direction, when you have it all charted out, and weather intervenes, or something else, you have to work your hardest to find that alternate path. You have to look at the topo map, you have to chart the course, recalibrate – and move forward. That’s what Aiglon helped me do throughout my life. Finally, I must say that moving forward does not always mean you escape unscathed. In my case, since that expedition I’ve never again been able to eat Knorr soup.

Saturday 29 June: Expedition
W
ALKING IS ONE OF LIFE’S GREAT pleasures – especially for Aiglonians. So, the chance to introduce friends and family to the longfamiliar walk that runs from Bretaye to the Lac des Chavonnes, with a picnic along the way, was a pleasure no Aiglonian could willingly pass up. Of course, an expedition – however short – is not an expedition without a briefing. Louise Thomas, Head of Expeditions, reminded everyone to ensure they had enough water and food for the trip and to feel free to call the expedition team should they get lost (“Expect us to ask you ‘What can you see?’ Try to avoid the classic student answer ‘I can see some cows…’”). Yellow signs, she told the assembled teams, did not indicate danger (as scurrilous students sometimes joked), and if anyone wanted to try swimming in the lake, it was certainly perfect weather for a dip – though jumping straight in was to be avoided: lake water can be very chilly. Aiglonians alighted the train at Bretaye and then chose one of two routes down to the lake. Much to the relief of those still feeling a little delicate after a night on the tiles at Gringos or the Jazz, the journey was more of an amble than a hike and the spectacular views, the scent of the alpine flowers and the bees and birds that accompanied the buzz of conversation soon provided a balm to sore heads.

Legend has it that a cache of diamonds, which can be seen glinting at the bottom of the water in strong moon or sunlight, is protected by a white monster. Sceptics, however, say that it is actually a pyriteencrusted rock.

Many alumni wanted to share this most quintessential of Aiglon experiences with the next generation. Pietro Dova (Belvedere, 1980) first walked this route with his parents, and at the Anniversary Weekend walked it with his daughter. “It’s nice to show your kids what your parents showed you,” he said. “The beauty of this place is everlasting. Though I think my daughter is at the age where she would rather walk in front of me!” He also reflected on the importance – and challenges – of getting away from it all. “Kids can only appreciate this environment when they get out there into it. It gets them off their phones – for a while! You say to them: ‘Look, there’s Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe’. And they say: ‘Cool. Now let me look at my phone’!” Mogens L Mathiesen (Belvedere, 1994) walked with his wife, Annabell. “It’s incredible to share this with her,” he said. “Aiglon was a big part of my childhood and adolescence and for Annabell to experience what it was like is wonderful. We’ve been talking about how beautiful Switzerland is and what it would be like to live here, bringing the kids to see it all. And about all the different places we went skiing!” Annabell reflected on how special it was to walk in the Alps – not least because “the smell of the Alpine flowers is incredible”. Ioana Vasilescu (Clairmont, Year 13) brought along her father, mother and sister from Romania, and said
her experience of expedition had helped her enjoy the outdoors a lot more. “My mum was very keen to share this event with me, because I’m always so enthusiastic when I get back from expedition.” And family, of course, encompasses many cherished relationships. Patricia Gucci (Clairmont, 1982) elected to enjoy the route with her dog, Lola. “It’s fabulous to be walking today, very therapeutic,” she said. “I’m glad I did it – it’s so beautiful here, such a treat. But maybe it would have been a little easier without Lola!” Others were enjoying the chance to catch up with old friends, with the occasional chorus of guffaws rising up as a particularly amusing memory was recalled. Mark Van Den Berg (Belvedere, 1979) hadn’t seen his former roommate Simon Leath (Belvedere, 1980) for more than 40 years. “And it’s just the same jokes, the same stuff. Except now we talk about: ‘Oh, my knee!’ and ‘Oh, my shoulder!’ rather than nightclubs!” In fact, Simon hadn’t been back to Switzerland since 1982, and was enjoying showing his wife Emma “just what we went through! When you went camping, you went in groups and there were no tents, just bivouacs. But then the foxes got rabies and we were allowed to have tents, which was great. You get to know people pretty well. And we’re still friends! Most of my old friends are from high school.” T H E W E E K E N D A I G L O N 19

Marc Borrelli (Belvedere, 1980) and Gerald Jensen (Belvedere, 1979) last walked together 25 years ago. They agreed that they now appreciate the experience a little more. “We were complaining most of the time: how hot it was, teachers, homework assignments, who’s been mean to you – things kids still complain about. Nothing changes! And then, when you come back, you’re amazed at how beautiful it is.” As the broad sweep of the lake came into view with its breathtaking mountain backdrop sparking murmurs of appreciation, those intending to swim started to brace themselves while everyone else settled down to their picnics. Naturally, conversation turned to fond memories of expedition. “I remember just how tough they were, but also how awesome,” said Judy C. Stonebridge-Dunne (Exeter, 1989). “The mental strength they gave me was such a big thing, and I think I’m quite sporty as a result. But it’s more spectacular than I remember. When you’re a kid, you don’t notice so much what’s around you. You’re just at school. Now, I can’t believe that I came here! After this, sending my children here, who are currently six and eight, is a number one goal for me.” Chris Sinclair (Alpina, 1997), Martin Santandreu (Belvedere, 1997) and Luis Berenbau (Delaware,
1997) reflected on the fact that expedition is often an incredibly bonding experience. “I think expeditions make friendships special,” Chris said. “There are some things that never get shared outside an expedition. You’re away from school, you’re fending for yourself, it’s a great time to bond without supervision. Just going to the Co-op and deciding what to get was an experience. You know: ‘Put that chocolate down! We need protein!’” But even the best expeditions must come to an end, however regretfully. And as walkers started their return, thoughts turned towards how much at Aiglon has changed – while so much has remained the same: the lake, the mountains, the sky, the joy of shared experiences and good company. “You find that you can have the same conversations with someone who graduated in 2015 as you can with someone who graduated in 1955,” said Nicholas Gorham (Delaware, 2014) walking with his girlfriend Mae Franco and Oliver Patrick (Belvedere, 2016). “The thing that is shared most intergenerationally is the affection that people have towards expedition after they have left the school. We all have mixed feelings while we are doing it! But after we leave, it seems to be remembered as a very important part. It makes you part of a very special, and a very heartwarming club.” T H E W E E K E N D A I G L O N 21

he Sunday brunch was a perfect postscript to an unforgettable weekend, as Aiglonians new and old packed the Crazy Moose restaurant at Bouquetins. Amid the venue’s spectacular views of Mont Blanc and the valley below, many turned their thoughts to the future, and their wishes for the next 70 years on the mountain. “To have more events like this!” said Egon Vorfeld (Delaware, 1985). And to keep doing what we are doing. Especially more scholarship students and emphasising the not-forprofit element, as that makes it such a unique and incredible school.” Louis Snyder (Delaware, 1969) agreed that continuous improvement – while retaining the school’s spirit – was essential. “I’d like to see it become one of the top 10 best boarding schools

in Europe – and the world, for that matter.” Mariana Brandão de Souza (Clairmont, 2015) looked forward to seeing Aiglon’s already global reach continue to grow. “My own experience here, meeting people from all over Europe and Russia, was amazing. It’s been incredible to meet people from different years and find out what we have in common.” And all emphasised Aiglon’s unique approach: long may it survive and thrive, thought Mohammed Afkhami (Alpina, 1992) . “Keep evolving in the same direction, stay relevant, keep the outdoor experience and the international student faculty and body.” In short, said Chloe Teal (Clairmont, 2015): “Aiglon is just going to keep getting better and better.” T H E W E E K E N D A I G L O N 31

Here’s looking at you, Bibi Mrs Bibi Parsons – at the heart of Aiglon for more than 50 years.
T
HERE WERE SO MANY SPECIAL MOMENTS AT the reunion. I practically knew everybody – though I didn’t recognise some of the ones from the 1960s as so many of them now have beards! We shared so many memories. Did I remember going to this hut? Did I remember cheering everyone up because they didn’t want to walk up this mountain? For me, the first evening was the most beautiful. Everyone arrived at the barbecue between the houses, up the hill, with wooden benches and tables to sit on. The tables were beautifully decorated by our staff with wild flowers. People were arriving until late in the evening, and I could see them all coming and greet them, because it was still light. It was wonderful to see boys and girls who might have been through difficult times at school come back as happy and successful mothers and fathers. During my time at the school, we were like a big family, and the bonds between us were very strong. And it was so good to see the great friendships between this big international community of Aiglon alumni. 32 A I G L O N T H E W E E K E N D
The one bitter pill for me was that my husband Philip and my son Peter were not there to greet them, and many of them said the same. I know that they would have loved the occasion. There was simply a great feeling of togetherness and friendship. I still learn from these wonderful people, old and young, who still stay in touch with me by phone and by letter. All of my old students told me: we will never forget our time in this little Alpine village. And now I am looking forward to the 75th anniversary!
