Foreword

Welcome from the Art Department

It is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to welcome you to the GCSE and Pre-IB art and design exhibition for 2023, and to introduce their fabulous, thoughtful, technically proficient and engaging work. Our students have ventured on a thoroughly creative journey over the course of their study here at Aiglon, developing and exploring new skills and acquiring a greater understanding of artistic techniques and processes. They have visited museums, reflected upon and responded to great works, attended cultural events and are now ready to hold their first major exhibition! They have certainly immersed themselves in visual culture, and we are extremely proud of the progress they have made!

In this accompanying exhibition book you will find a mere glimpse of the students' complete body of work. These images are supported with an artist statement which allows the reader to understand in a little more depth the thoughts and inspirations which lie behind the work. I think you will agree that our students have certainly risen to the challenge of creating a fantastic body of work, which includes two components; a personal portfolio and an externally set assignment. Some of this work you may see before you in the exhibition today.

In writing this welcome statement I cast my mind back to the many great experiences we have had together as a group,

experiences that will hopefully live long into the future. From our extraordinary cultural visit to London in 2022, where we visited the Tate Modern, the National Gallery and other cultural attractions, to the blustery and icy cold January visit to the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva. Watching our students plan for and execute their ideas in the 10 hours controlled assessment and then being so proud of their huge achievements at the end. All these experiences, and more, will surely leave an unforgettable impression on our young artists. We truly hope that the students will learn from and further develop these experiences with us at IB level, or perhaps simply continue to enjoy the visual arts as they take the next steps on their journey.

Aanya Datla Exeter House

Art is a very subjective form of expression but it can also be a very beautiful way to showcase your work. My work is perceived in different ways by others but that's what makes it such an interesting medium of expression.

Over the past few years I have gotten the opportunity to try out various medias such as sculpture, oil, acrylic, watercolour and many more. But through this process I have found medias that really resonate with me, one of them being watercolour. Watercolour painting is a way for me to explore the beautiful complexities of the natural world.

With its light and subtle colours, watercolour allows me to capture the delicate nuances of the environment in a unique way which I can then build over to create complex and intricate designs.

Watercolour is a medium that I find particularly special, and it is a pleasure to be able to share my work with others.

I strive to create works that provoke thought and reflection such as with my mock exam piece. I created a futuristic watercolour study using images of architecture to showcase how times are changing and how before we know it our world is going to change. I want to create works that inspire the viewer to think beyond the image, to contemplate the deeper meaning of the subject matter.

Art is a powerful medium, and I take great pleasure in exploring its endless possibilities. I love the way it can be used to create beautiful, vivid images, and I strive to use it in ways that will bring joy to me and the viewer. I also strive to create works that will represent different themes and ideas which are integrated into my everyday life.

This academic year I have explored clay and acrylic works. I genuinely enjoy painting with acrylics. Painting is a good way to put my thoughts on a page. When using acrylic paints I love mixing the colours. I have been influenced by Russian painters such as Karl Bryullov. His paintings are hung around my houses. My individual works are usually landscapes of buildings because I personally am considering architecture as a career, so I enjoy building designs. I would like to achieve a level 8 or 9 in GCSE. I would hope the audience enjoys my work and finds it unique rather than copies.

Annabelle Cheung Exeter

As an artist, my main themes are self-exploration and reflecting on the past. Through my work, I aim to delve into my consciousness and bring to light aspects of myself that may be hidden or unexamined.

My pieces often take the form of self-portraits or representations of my emotions through refined and hyper-realistic colour pencil work to express myself. I view my art as a form of inner expression, allowing myself and others to process and make sense of my thoughts visually and tangibly. Considering my constant attention to detail, coloured pencils enable me to precisely illustrate even the finest lines or dots through their fine tips.

The Y11 mock exam outcome is one of the best reflections of my intentions in art, as it can be viewed from two angles – a dual portrait of myself in different stages of my life and another of my mother in various stages of her life. I believe that art does not have a singular nor fixed meaning behind it; the best pieces of art are often left ambiguous, allowing the audience room for observation, interpretation and conclusion. Therefore, I hope my audience can develop their rendition of this piece.

These two years of experimentation and discovery of my art style have allowed me to find my strengths and get to know artists from around the world over time, allowing me to gain confidence and unique ideas for my projects in future. Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” –

I have done clay work and a palette knife painting because I like the physicality of it and the ability to touch and change the work with ease and the expressiveness of it. I like using bright colours in my work because I like to make them happy and for me colourful pieces show happiness. I also like using architecture as it has always been an interest of mine; I like buildings.

I like using a mix of media and always doing something different, such as lino reduction, clay, pallet knife and acrylic. I like to have my work show what I currently like and as well to be creative and different.

I would like my audience to view my work in an open mind way and be willing to look at things from a different point of view.

During my Pre-IB studies, I learnt the art of photography, shading, tones, oil and acrylic painting, and so on. I learnt how to paint using various approaches and instruments.

For my latest project, Lock, I separated the concept into sections where we investigated how it combines with art, poetry, photography, and sculpture. I researched numerous artists' concepts and adapted their techniques into my paintings and photography. We sketched using pens and paper, and painted with various paints.

Painting using acrylics and oils piqued my curiosity since they can be layered on top of each other. I preferred wet mediums, such as paint. Yes, the interaction between media and ideas differs. Because if you have a concept, you must decide which form of media would best suit it.

All of my artwork reflects myself, and I am proud of all of it, which binds me to my artwork. There are no motives in any work, but I want my artwork to bring joy to people's and my own eyes. When my audience sees my artwork, I want them to appreciate it. I want people to understand and experience what I was thinking when I painted or sketched.

We encountered several artists and their interpretations of art on our art trip to Geneva. I developed a strong interest in art on that trip because I found it incredibly intriguing, and I was eager to return and analyse all of the artworks I saw.

Hello, I am Casper Bonnier. I have been interested in art since a young age when my parents (my mother a ceramist and my dad an architect) would take me to museums.

My first love of art was a painting by Jackson Pollock, it had inspired me to try splashing paint around, I was 5 back then, for me it was the best art form.

Since then I have dabbled with different media in school and at home, I have never liked doing the same thing as others so when the teacher told me to do a portrait I drew a car, all the time I thought out of the box. I think this is where I found my natural talent in being weird so I guess you can say that my art is a representation of me trying to detangle myself from the strings of the norm and cut chains that hold me here in school.

Chloe Gazal Le Cerf House

I have experimented with lots of different media, but the ones that I have continued to use the most are using acrylic paint and painting expressively, with a palette knife.

I have experimented with lots of different media, whether that be sketching with a pencil, watercolours and printing. I have stuck with this media because I have the most fun using it.

I usually use bright and realistic colours because, if I am painting a portrait I like to use realistic colours, but making these colours I like to try to make them as bright as possible so it stands out on the page.

A theme that I have explored repeatedly is portraits and frozen in time movement images. Penny Warden has a big influence on me as she inspired me to try/start painting expressly.

There is a relationship between the media and ideas I use; the quick movement of the palette knife represents the movement of the pictures I have taken.

Lots of the pieces I have painted or drawn have been my family members and that is what has tied lots of my work together to make a cohesive body of work.

Throughout the year I have experimented with various themes and ideas, a couple that stand out to me personally are the still-life still composition and carved out pieces, the reduction print, created from scratch.

Ultimately, my prized possession is the piece I painted during the art exam in a period of 10 hours. For this piece, I had to take the ideas and theme of another artist to help guide my own process.

Before this course, I was not very in touch with the creation of art. My parents have always been fanatics of art, unfortunately for me, this meant going to galleries and museums everywhere we went along with meeting artists.

Either way, it was a whole lot of watching and no painting. I often doubted my abilities to create art but as the year progressed and my knowledge and practice increased so did my confidence in tandem.

I want my audience to experiment with my art in their own ways, whether that be in layers, dissecting the colours and shapes and strokes or in my preferred method which is looking at everything at once. In the second option, I feel like my audience will be able to see everything working in synchrony to create this piece of art.

Individually my pieces may seem very different and unrelated but they have two things in common, they were made by me and form a conglomerate of pieces all made with the same core ideas and techniques. Hard to notice at first glance but clear after revision.

I have plenty, and I mean plenty of things to work on and improve, I have not even scratched the tip of the iceberg.

When I caught wind of the idea of me sitting down for 10 hours with the single aim of producing the single best art piece ever created by me I was unsure on what or how I was going to carry out such a task, but once I sat down the ideas flowed and the movements started like a well-oiled machine.

I have explored many media in art and overall I really liked the linocut technique and also the colour pencils even though they are a simple way of making art I find it really expressive and interesting

The relationship between the media that I normally use are the linocut and the colour pencils because they match with my ideas because I know how to work well with that type of media.

I didn't really get inspired by any outside artist or anything because I have clear ideas on my art capacities and I just try to make the best of it and with the colour pencils and linocut I like the stuff that I can do. My work is mostly repetitive because I always do the same type of stuff based on similar ideas. For example, I really like football. That's why most of them are based on football.

This year I have explored multiple themes in my artwork such as compositions of everyday objects, the use of different shades, tones, and tints, nature, self portraits and our exam topic, Lock.

I have worked with many types of media such as pencils, ink, and oil paint. My favorite out of them is oil paint because it allows me to create a lot of depth in my painting by creating numerous layers of color.

I also chose to use oil paints for my exam because I was inspired by the work of Picasso, who used oil paints. For our final exam relating to the subject of lock, I was inspired by Van Gogh, particularly his painting of a prison yard and two wrestlers.

I think much of the work I’ve done this year can be related to one another through themes of careful composition and experimentation with colours, as much of the work is monochromatic and features abstract colors.

I think this is best exemplified in my self portrait, where I tried to showcase that a human face can still look real and have depth and detail while also being painted in a monochromatic style using an unrealistic color.

Floris Munneke Belvedere House

In my work, the main themes are past, present and future, and the new project, Lock. I have used different types of media, my favourite being reduction prints. I like reduction prints as you can make multiples of the same art pieces with different colour combinations.

I think the thing that ties all the art pieces together is that they were produced by an amazing artist that shall remain unnamed (me!).

My name is Gregor Constantin Rittmeister and I was born in Frankfurt, Germany, on 25.09.2006. I moved to Switzerland shortly later and grew up bilingual.

At the age of 4, I started taking Art Classes after school. I painted a lot, but also started at an early age to work with ceramics and wood. I always loved being creative and trying out different techniques.

Nowadays I really enjoy creating collages and decorative Art. Famous young artists inspire me a lot for my work, but I also enjoy exploring museums with the most famous artists of the world.

Aiglon College provides me with the possibility to learn more about the different art movements I love.

Kevin Sun Delaware House

I like art because I think I can express my ideas and themes by creating works.

I like to do sketches, watercolours, or oil paintings on paper. Whenever I have an idea, I create my own artwork.

I was particularly interested in anime and manga when I was small, and these anime added to my interest in art. Each of my paintings has a corresponding theme.

Often drawing things can improve my skills and relieve my stress. I hope that the audience can have a deeper understanding of these ideas through my works.

Kiraz Arulad Exeter House

Since I started art last year I have worked with acrylic, oil paint and watercolor.

Since starting art and before, I've been to many museums and galleries, and I think what inspired me the most amongst all the artists is that the range of work as well as the different media used to express the same ideas. Seeing how different people interpret the same artwork.

I think all my work from the past two years, even though I experimented and used different techniques, shows how gradually I became more confident as we did different topics.

One of my works that had a clear intention about it was my packaged face idea. This is the work I finally could express a deeper meaning with, which was how society had the idea of a perfect face and sold it to billions of women.

I love experimenting with different textures, layering and doing artist studies since I find it very interesting to research the history and development of art.

Over the past few years I have enjoyed taking art and look forward to finishing it in a few months.

Larry Collins Alpina House

Throughout my time working though my Art GCSE I have explored the features of the human face through a variety of mediums mimicking many different artists techniques and varying styles such as Burne Hogarth, Picasso and many others.

I have worked with paints, clay, a variety of techniques and types of printing and drawing. I am interested in the effects that age, gender and linking the themes from Art GCSE to my work trying to portray as abstract portraits.

I have explored themes such as past present, future and lock but more specifically, portraits and still life.

I have used all kinds of media, including acrylic paint, watercolour and pencil but my preferred form of media is pencil. The artists Betina La Plante, kira Kim and Arthur Rackham have inspired my work but I have also been inspired by my roommate Maria Sarfelt who I have photographed for my art multiple times.

Leah Storey Le Cerf House

In my work throughout the past two years I have explored lots of different themes and used lots of different media to find the ones that I prefer.

The main themes explored during the course were past, present and future and now we are currently looking at the theme ‘lock’. I have found media that I prefer such as pencil and clay but my most preferred media is oil paints.

I like oil paint and working with it because it’s very easy and I find it a better alternative to acrylics because it's easier to work with as it doesn't dry fast and it is quite thick so it is easier to paint things that can require lots of layers with other types of paints.

A lot of my works have not been very influenced by specific artists, I tend to come up with my ideas for paintings and drawings in my head and the times when I am influenced I find my inspiration from small artists off social media and in some small art galleries.

My art also shows growth and the way that my art has changed through the past two years which I believe is what makes all my art cohesive.

When I'm painting I like to do things more precisely and also do things like portraits which are my strong point. I also like to try new things that are out of my comfort zone which show some variation in my work.

Lekha Yerneni Clairmont House

Since I was young, I loved colour whether that be in clothes, paint or objects. Through my childhood I was keen, as it was something that mesmerised me. This made me sit beside my mom, watching her, while she drew and painted. And trust me she was, and is a better artist than I could ever be.

As I grew up I realised that there was much more you could do with art and so much more to achieve. From this, I started sketching and free hand drawing and this made me more aware that art worked as a way to showcase what I couldn't have through words, I know sounds cliche right? But it’s true.

The next part of my art journey would be Aiglon. When I first came to the Art department everything seemed comparatively varied to what I had back home. I had more options and didn't know printmaking or cross- hatching

were a type of art. Through knowing this I understood that there were many possibilities through which I could express my ideas.

The connection that builds through the media and ideas that I work with are creative and imaginative.

I was able to explore themes such as: Locked, nature, objects, portraits etc and I was able to formulate ideas in terms of mixing different mediums together.

For years pencil was a medium I was able to master very well compared to the others, and this was the one that interested me the most because you get to communicate form and create shade/tones.

I try to picture what and how I want it to look in my head and think about what I need to attain this in the best standard possible. For example,I worked with a clay pot and exhibited the beauty of the ocean through animals and corals.

The most important factor was that I was able to correct it, so it seemed like I was learning everytime I used this medium.

Art has shaped me through the environment I was surrounded especially, travelling. It's interesting how other cultures and backgrounds represent history and life through the form of art, and upon visiting museums and ancient architecture I’ve understood that art is something broad that doesn't have a definition to.

Personally, for every piece of art work I choose the media based on what I want to portray to the viewers, and what I want them to feel if I were in their shoes.

Maria Sarfelt Exeter House

In this exhibition I am exploring the key theme of ‘lock’. Looking closer at this theme I have become familiar with different ideas such as the emotional connection and bond between family, looking at the complicated routes of addiction and the key emotions involved with becoming vulnerable to love.

This year I have tried finding a key media that I both enjoy and also am good at. I have furthered my skills in oil painting while also deepening my handling of using coloured pencil.

What I like most about colour pencils is the fact that I can deepen tones and create life-like pieces using various techniques including blending, harsh pencil strokes and at times, incorporating other media as well.

The relationship between using colour pencil as a media and the idea involved in my work is that I like to focus usually on very delicate concepts and using colour pencil I can achieve that outcome. As well as this if i wanted to, I could create a more harsh outcome by the help of harsher pencil strokes.

Some of my artworks express a very clear meaning but some others I have intentionally left up to interpretation to symbolise the different ways of experiencing emotions as a whole.

Growing up I have learnt to be fond of art with the help of my sister who has both inspired me to dig deeper into the meaning of my art and to help me broaden my interests within the artistry world.

My intention behind my watercolour cranberry tree was to create a calm atmosphere as The Lenni Lenape (an indigenous peoples of the Northeastern Woodlands, who live in the United States and Canada) elevated the cranberry to a significant role in tribal society.

As well as this, my family has been very enthusiastic about including art into my upbringing. I have deepened my interest in art by reflecting on my experiences throughout my lifetime and presenting them in a visual way.

Each individual art work I have done ties together with a theme of emotion. Whether it be landscapes, animals or human interactions, I have always found a way to incorporate emotion.

It was acknowledged as the symbol of peace, hence the use of watercolour. The watercolour is a very delicate media to use which goes hand in hand behind the intentions of the piece.

I want my audience to experience my art as intriguing because of the appeal but interesting because of the meaning. Initially finding it eye-catching however once finding the true meaning behind it, relating it to perhaps common emotions.

Najib Aabi

Over the course of this term, I have tested different art types such as still-life drawing, observational drawing, portraits and experimental art. I have explored themes of realistic, vivid, and dramatic art.

In terms of portraits, ever since I made my first portrait, I have realised I have a great strength in making my work more realistic, therefore, I enjoyed the fact that I can spend as much time given and still make something that is worth it, my time.

In terms of dramatic drawing which I have done for my artist study response to Arthur Rackhma’s masterpiece, I have found it fascinating how this dramatic art effect can fully depict my ideas with the unique stylistic use.

My sense of creativity and dedication is most of the time reflected on my work and has a great influence on how well I recreate artists' work or come up with my own ideas.

However, I also found so many artists that have influenced my art learning, for instance, Georgia O’keefe, who I have learned from how to build a monochromatic piece which I used for painting my Viola instrument.

My portrait of Nancy Ajram which I am currently working on is my biggest and longest art project. It has always been my goal to recreate an actual existing celebrity portrait which I finally seem to achieve to challenge myself and take my skills to the next level.

My work is mostly based around the idea of precision or making it close to how it looks in reality, which is what often defines my work and all of my art pieces have in common.

And, my goal for the outside world is to receive good positive feedback on how well I have performed this portrait.

Noah Ligertwood Belvedere House

In my work, I have mainly explored the theme of ‘Lock’ through multiple forms of media with some of my most used ones being watercolour, pencil and printing.

I especially appreciate working with watercolour as it allows for unique blending of colours and a wide range of precision. The same applies to the use of pencil, however I also like the expression of texture that it allows.

The main influences for my work is the beauty of the landscape in the Swiss alps around where I live. I feel it provides infinite possibilities for potential pieces due to the sheer variation of the environment.

Oceane Burt Exeter House

In art so far I have explored the theme ‘lock’ where I have been looking at the artist Mark Adlington, we have also looked at landscape composition and self portraits.

I have worked with oil paints - this interests me because it’s a way where you can add lots of detail and shadows and focus on the light by building up layers oil paint.

James Turrell has influenced some of my work as he focuses entirely on light and the viewer's involvement with that light. In my work light has played a big part - especially shadows and highlights. My work had been quite varied, but an underlying theme which ties is together has been the exploration of light - and shadows.

In my most recent artwork I explored Mark Adlington whose paintings are of animals. So my intention for this artwork was to create a realistic looking animal using different colours such as blues and reds.

I’m looking to involve and grab people's attention by my abstract approach with different colours and different kinds of detail that the viewer needs to interpret.

Rain Jiang Belvedere House

The theme of my artworks tends to be about unusual perspectives in drawings and portraits. I like to draw with only black and white, these two bold shades collocate with each other to vividly represent a piece of art.

What I like about drawing sketches is that it makes me feel excited, I am not really sure about the word ‘intention’ in my drawing, I just feel happy and relieved as I complete the drawing, and I would feel a sense of accomplishment as the drawing is finished.

The techniques I have used when sketching include hatching, cross hatching, shading and rubbing. My work when looked at in closer detail contains several other techniques used when refining my drawings.

I want my audience to see a good use of equipment and techniques in a piece, which can attract people's attention to the artist's skill.

Rania Rullan Mansur Clairmont House

In my time at Aiglon, I have explored multiple ideas and themes in my work. Some of them are self-portraits, using oil and acrylic paint. I have used inks, coloured pencils, experimented with colour theory and many more.

One of my favourite types of media to work with are inks and oil paints, I really enjoy working with oil paints because I find that they are easy to work with and make a painting look much more put together, the reason I like working with inks is that I like the vibrant colours that you get and I feel like they add dimension to any artwork.

I feel like there is a strong relationship between what media you use and the subject. For example, I like using oil paints for more realistic artwork and inks for vibrant work that's more colourful.

One of my biggest inspirations as an artist has been Takashi Murakami, Toilet Paper and Claude Monet. These 3 are my favourites.

In my opinion, they have influenced my work greatly, I would say that my work follows the same style in a way so in a sense this ties all of them in.

I want my work to achieve good grades, for example when I got to IB I would like to receive a 7 in art. I would like my audience to experience happiness when looking at my art.

Ririko Kuwabara

In the beginning, I struggled to express the theme of “Past, Present, and/or Future” in my work so I searched for some artists for inspiration. Then I found an artist called Edward Hopper who is famous for his talent for capturing solitude, loneliness, and isolation.

I don't think any other artist who can manage to capture the melancholic romance of city life is quite like Edward Hopper. He efficiently encapsulates city living and perfectly expresses the endless possibilities of city life, alongside a sense of a detached, disconnected, and lonely existence.

I found his artwork and style very interesting and fascinating, so I thought of a composition showing an isolated feeling and loneliness of time passing and things changing, using Edward Hopper’s artworks as a reference.

The reason why I chose to draw this tree is that there is nothing around it and it looks old and lonely, so it fits with my theme, and also I wanted to show that even though time goes by and everything changes there is something that doesn’t change, like this old tree.

Choosing this tree gives the viewers a sense of relatable pathos, as I draw the viewer into the potential alienation of modern life.

In my drawing, I have been particularly inventive with the tones and shadows of the tree.

There’s a sense of expectation in the air, as the subject’s gaze is fixed on the sky and he’s bathed in a hopeful, bright light, which sits in contrast against the dark tones of the right part of the tree, exaggerating and amplifying his solitude.

Santiago Herrera Belvedere House

Throughout the two-year IGCSE course, I have experimented with various media types. I continuously went back to and used lino reduction printing quite frequently. I feel that it allows oneself to express a person, object, or moment.

The concept of lino reduction print helps me to break down an image in different ways and experiment and alter its appearance both physically and in its colours.

The relationship of usage between lino reduction print allows me to print media and later alter it to my liking, creating a different point of view of the media for myself and others.

Nature and family have had a strong impact on my media creation, allowing me to capture the moment, express my values and interests and capture the person/ animal in one place for me to keep and enjoy for the years to come usually in the form of photography.

The main intention behind my pieces of art is to express the things I value, express things I am interested in, and capture and alter the moment to the best of my ability.

During my Pre-IB art course at Aiglon I learned a range of new abilities and experimented with various art mediums. This includes acrylic, oil, but also continuous line drawings, and pen drawings.

We have also looked at different themes such as still life, self portraits, and as we are doing now the project ‘Lock’. This is where we practised different techniques with the different mediums to create our own pieces of art.

The theme of self portraits was my favourite because I was able to get creative with what I was creating at that moment. For example I had to pick a certain artist, Jenny Saville, and through looking at her art work, I had to create my self portrait using her ideas.

This let me show my creative side but with guidance throughout my assessment. Throughout the process of experimenting with different mediums, I have managed to figure out which type of medium I need to use on different types of art pieces I am working on.

At the end of our Self portrait theme, we had our mock 10 hour exam and to finish this off I analysed my self portrait. Through my work, I gained a better understanding of the different styles I look to work on and different mediums I like to work with.

My favourite was oil paint, I enjoyed using this medium to further develop my project on self portraits. Oil paint blends easier and dries slower, this allows me to refine different areas then go back to them when I need too. It helps me with the accuracy of my painting and lets me add every little detail I need to add.

Overall, although oil paint is my favourite medium to work with, I feel that I should continue to make different pieces of art with different mediums discovering them further. I feel that I am very proud of my outcomes so far and am excited to continue.

As I mentioned before, Jenny Saville is one of the artists I looked at and inspired my self portrait. I was quite influenced by her because as I was inspecting her art works I saw the amount of detail she adds to her work but in a fun way. She adds splotches of paint on top and underneath the actual portrait.

During my time in Pre-IB art, I have explored different techniques and topics. Specifically, I learned how to take a singular word such as ‘Lock’ and create drawings with different meanings all deriving from that word.

I personally work with standard grey drawing pencils and or colored pencils because I find them the most enjoyable to use. I love the way the colours blend together and the shading I achieve when using them.

When working on a larger art piece I try to pick topics that have meaning to me, so the same goes for the media I use. I try to correlate what I think fits best with the general theme of the art work.

All of the art I work on for longer periods of time have to do with issues in my personal life. I find that the best work comes from places of your mind you do not quite understand.

I have only been at Aiglon for a month as of now, but my artwork is connected through the broader topic of internal struggle.

Behind the print I am completing right now, the intention is about stopping before it is too late. The pill bottle is a metaphor of something which is not healthy for you whether that is a relationship or bad habit. It symbolises knowing your limits and when you need to move forward.

I want my audience to be understanding and keep an open mind not only for others but themselves as well.

Throughout my year 11 Pre-IB art I looked at a bunch of different techniques and styles that I can now use to differentiate my work from others. We have looked through different styles of art and ways to do things. We looked at artwork from different old and modern artists to depict emotion and feeling.

For example we look at an oil painting by Pablo Picasso which was spread with monochromatic colours which helped emphasise a saddened look and feel. And, in response I made an oil painting self portrait to go along with the monochromatic theme.

That wasn't the only painting that was done. We also went out into nature and zoomed in oil paintings of what we found. Throughout the year I've found myself to lean towards more oil painting and painting in general and find it

very relaxing. I also enjoy photography, all of which let me outside to take pictures of what surrounds me.

Often when there is a change in season we make sure to illustrate the differences in a piece of work which varies in style. Normally what interests me is the nature, the trees and other plants and animals or just normal scenery.

I like my artwork to be more or less a good look at what you would see on a day to day basis, with a twist of my own feel so that it doesn't exclude that natural look.

I make artwork so that the people viewing it can understand how it is I make the artwork and how impactful it is to me and others every single day.

Over the past two years, I have experimented with several different mediums like paint, pencil, pen, ink, clay and printing, and explored themes such as youth, melancholy, identity, internal conflict, and the natural world.

Most of my inspiration stems from using paint and pen together, which I feel gives my work a defined outline in a messy and colourful context. I think that my chaotic, tangled style reflects the artistic ideas I am drawn towards, with artists like Francis Bacon, Lisa Milroy, and Robert Joyner capturing my interest.

In contrast to this, I also enjoy working in a meticulous, detailed style that is shown in my architectural work inspired by Le Corbusier, as well as my drawings of Leonardo da Vinci anatomy. Some other factors which have fed

into my artistic creativity include spending time outside, developing my love for writing, and simply contemplating my age and feelings that come with it.

I think that imperfection is a key aspect that underpins all of my work, because I embrace a disorderly style in my painting that mirrors my train of thought, rather than avoid it.

I hope that my audience will appreciate the time I’ve spent on my work, and that they will take away something with themwhether that’s a memory, thought, or feeling.

Zara Enthoven Exeter House

I joined art this year and during these few months, I have experimented with many different types of media. Some of my favourites have been oil painting, watercolour and coloured pencil drawings.

Many of my artworks have had elements of shadows or mirroring as I enjoy adding these details especially when oil painting. I have explored themes and ideas of artefacts and traditions in many of my artworks such as my final exam where I painted a family heirloom of a metal statue of a flower.

My intention of this artwork was to show how special this flower is to me by putting intricate highlights and shadows, and its reflection onto the reflective table.

I also like painting using watercolour as I like to experiment with how the colours bleed into each other but can also layer and not mix, depending on how much water I use.

I have loved to be able to create artwork of some of my hobbies such as gymnastics. I did an artwork using the outline of a position I did and then used a palette knife to play with mixing different colours inside the outline to show shadows and highlights.

I liked experimenting with my ideas within the topics and seeing what I can come up with and how imaginative I can be. I have also experimented with chalk and really liked how I could use my fingers to blend the colours. I used chalk to do artwork of faces and animals such as dogs.

My favourite artist study that I have done so far was Andy Warhol as I liked to play with colours and do portrait photography and then experiment with editing online.
