12 BILLION & MATRIX I signed up for the 12 Billion group for the first week. Our task consisted con producing calculations for 12B+ bodies. How much do we need when we are 12B on the planet? What about the other species? How is our land being used? What about our resources? We also followed these calculations with the beginning of abstract data visualization, extrapolating data from today to 12B in 2100. Based on estimation we got to the conclussion that we have to slow down. We wanted to propose with the ‘‘Matrix’’ and the ‘‘Moodboard’’ hypothesis, scenarios, projections, expectations ... Moreover, apart from creating these excel spredsheets with numbers, and various attemps on graphical data representation I helped my colleague Regina in the group of lists to conceptualize the icons associated to each urgency and the different ways .

THE DIAGRAM After the first week review, Adrien proposed the creation of a document that interrelated these urgencies. He talked about a diagram like the ones that depict the water cycles, air cycles, rock cycles... I showed him a reference project from my home university ‘‘Protocolo hacia el 3er Paisaje by Sofía Marciel’’, and he agreed on the style so I started with the construction of the ‘‘Crust Section’’. I deep dived into the naturalis catalog, Alexander Humbolts drawings and overall scientific diagrams that depicted the world. I decided to create six different scenes: nutritio, water, air, resources, social, biodiversity. These were chosen following the work my colleagues in the organization and lists teams were developing. I filled this blank world with life, objects, arrows, information and finalised it creating a loop that allowed the drawing to never end, representing it’s cyclical nature.

INVESTIGATION In these weeks i dedicated my time to study The Why Factory and their extensive agenda for the future of cities and the planet. During this phase of the course, I critically looked at this production to produce an overview and reflect on of T?F Future cities agenda. ‘’Green dip, The Vertical village, (w)Ego, Onthego, Green dream, Copy paste, Biodivercity, Porocity, Food city, Freeland, Absolute Leisure, Resilience, Sensor city, Transformer, Healthy city, 4min city, Anarcity, Planet maker, Air city, Skycar, Autharchy, Luxury of the north, The new old, The Crust, From now to then, Robotic City, Pixeltopia, World wonders, Barbamama, Transparent City, Mirrors wew some of the projects I reviewd to get a deeper knowledge to then create my own visions. We also mini-groupally (Mirko, Regina and I) after Maudes presentation did mini studies on the base of 20 dresses illustrating the collections of IVH. What are the inspirations? The concern? The topics? The technics and technologies involved? Collaboration? References? For that we developed a template more than a full on investigation that showed a methodology or pipeline on how to approach fashion an extract ideas from it to then pour thm¡em into our visions. Some of the ideas proposed in this template were used in the final presentation.

ENVIRONMENTS I joined the visions team early on because I knew i wanted to be producing my own attempts of what cities will look like in the future. For me this process started in Cinema 4d but after hearing out Lex and Adrien I then realized that maybe switching to Blender would be a good alternative to get more people involved. For the first visions we directly associated the concepts to a dress in the collection. We later on decided that this was a bit constricting as it didn’t allow us to produce our own visions or generate them inspired by The Why Factories work. At this peiod I developed : Bubble city, Silicone City, 3Dprinted city, X-Ray city, etc. Moreover, because we were starting at this point to further develop the concept of “New Nature” and “New Matter” we investigated on natural and scientific elements/concepts that backed up or visions and gave them form and a body so they weren’t only aesthetically pleasing. To sumarize my part in visions team, I was the one that proposed and developed the first renders and help people switch to these render motors to produce visions until the end, along with my own.

Silicone city: talks about transparency, complexity and free access to the top parts of the city.

54

AINHOA CHURCH

Bubble city: talks about how human beings could settle collectively in a new form of architecture that floats like bubbles. These bubbles would be created with the recycled plastic found in the ocean.

AINHOA CHURCH, REGINA SALAZAR

Skeleton city: talks about how the cadavers of construction left to roat all around the planet can have a second life. They can be the skeleton to new ways of living, more in touch with today’s neccesities and agendas.

57

58

AINHOA CHURCH

X-ray City: talks about how the city could look under this xray property. It would allow us to see things that if not would be hidden like installations, vents, water piping....

Skeleton city 2: new matter colonises these construction cadavers in a more organic way, allowing for new ways of life.

3D printed city: higjly inspired in Wego, this vision talks about how housing would look in a 3d printed world, where the tipologies would completly shift to something more customizable, colorful and fun.

FINAL VISIONS Hypersensitive Environment: What if we had a material that is able to change colours? By changing colour, the material could retain or refract solar radiation. Surfaces to which the material is applied may also camouflage or stand out in the environment in which they are placed. What if we had a material that could react instantly to our bodies and emotions? We would live in ever-changing environments. These would be reacting to our signals, moods and feelings and adapting to our needs. Transparent Environment: What if we had a material that could make what it is applied to transparent? Everyone could see everything that goes on inside every place or even ourselves, re-evaluating the concepts of public and private. What if we had a (liquid) material like water to build with? We would have flexible and adjustable, more or less transparent walls that would force us to rethink the boundaries of our environments Urban Agriculture: What if we had a revolutionary model in urban planning that steps away from governmental dictate and invites organic urban growth? What if it stimulates initiatives through inhabitants can create their own neighbourhoods? How can successes, failures and surprises play out in a series of intriguing narratives that explore a new radically agricultural urbanism?

FINAL VIDEO The final video was edited in Premiere Pro. My colleagues asked me to edit this final recap of the design studio, as I had been manifesting an interest in movie making and video editing since I started creating my visions. For this video, my intention was clear. I wanted to develop a clear, upbeat, hopeful recap that invited viewers to act and fellow students that are watching to maybe consider signing up for The Why Factory. I believe a combination of the powerful music achieved this (Spring 0 and Rile Me Up), which I reworked on my computer to enhance different visions and make them more dynamic and enjoyable, mixed with the visions (post produced to unify colours) and the use of text to the rhythm of the song to get people excited and waiting for the next. I was very proud of how the video ended up looking, and I think the message of producing tangible solutions to tackle planetary urgencies by focusing on the capacity of nature to contribute to the fabrication of a more sustainable built environment” was also conveyed in the final phrase “act”.

GOOD BYE After completing the Design Studio at The Why Factory, I believe I take with me a lot of new knowledge. First, I have developed my critical thinking, created a conceptual framework, worked with the studio base concepts, and self-reflected on work set this or other semesters. Moreover, I’m confident that I have learned a lot about how a project is investigated and represented, including modelling, simulating, rendering, analysing, drawing etc... These ideas were also complemented with a complete investigation through research, iteration of drawings and models, and rhetorical elaboration. In this studio, I have also been very flexible with feeback (at least that’s the impression I have), and I have tried to incorporate every comment teachers or colleagues gave me to improve my work. Finally, I’d like to say that I feel I have contributed the most to bringing my spirit and originality to the table, trying to give new ideas and approaches from the graphical point of view.bitur sagittis sapien ac sollicitudin congue.
