You don’t have to be a betting person to know you’re on to a winner with The Prince’s Trust charity race day at Haydock Park. But you won’t have to wait ‘furlong’, as the event is being held on Tuesday 15 September. After the success of last year’s inaugural event, which raised a fence-jumping £15,000, this year’s charity race day will include a champagne reception, three course lunch and a speech from a young ambassador who has benefited from the Charity’s help. The day will begin at 11.15 am and guests will enjoy a number of races whilst also getting the chance to utilise the day’s tipster and participate in a charity auction. Merseyside Maritime Museum has unveiled a breathtaking new 120-cover restaurant and conference facility offering exceptional food and stunning views of the city. Located on the fourth floor of their Grade 1 listed home, the Maritime Dining Rooms has been a year in the planning and officially opened its doors to the public in August. The menu, which has been devised by executive chef Nigel Paul Smith, who has cooked for celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Paul Gayler, celebrates British and local produce, combining classic flavours with modern presentation. An excited Julie Ehlen, director of trading, said: “In completing this 12 month project we can now proudly boast that we have a restaurant that matches the quality offer that is the Merseyside Maritime experience. The dual aspect views are undoubtedly breathtaking and one of many unique selling points at Maritime Dining Rooms.” Food will be served seven days a week between 12 noon and 5pm to begin with, while a number of bookings have already been made for the restaurant post 5pm when Maritime Dining Rooms will cater for corporate and private functions. TEE OFF FOR CHARITY The 10th annual Alan Hansen Golf Classic charity event will tee off this 18 September in aid of the Roy Castle Lung Foundation. Hosted by the Liverpool FC legend, the star-studded golf day will be held at Southport’s Hillside Golf Club and hopes to raise lots of money for the cause. The Roy Castle Lung Foundation is the UK’s only charity wholly dedicated to defeating lung cancer and its need for funding is as imperative now as it was 18 years ago when the charity was founded. The foundation focuses on three key areas of work; research, patient care and tobacco control. Lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer in the world, with more than 38,000 people being diagnosed each year in the UK alone. RAGZ TO RICHES We all know that Liverpool has long been a city that nurtures musical talent ! welcoming artists from all over the globe and inspiring countless others to tap into the endless creativity the city is saturated in. Amongst the inspired is Norwegian beauty, Ragz; a striking, smiling young woman who has built up a loyal fan base in the city and around the UK.

LLM: So tell us a bit about yourself – what brought you over to Liverpool? In general music was the thing that brought me over. I came here to study but that was just the link – the means to get myself over. After graduating in 2005 it’s been an upward spiral – from doing the worst gigs in the world, which you have to do to get your name around and get to know people and places. We built ourselves up quite nicely – I love gigging so didn’t mind that we had to go through a few that weren’t great for us. Then you get to a stage where right now, I’m very happy with what we’re doing.

If people want to hear you, where can they go? Well we have a tour booked for October that’s all over the UK – I love the gigging; we’ve slept in the most random places and had only a sleeping bag between two, so it’s certainly not glamorous but that’s half of what it is. I cannot wait to go on stage though – the tiredness comes afterwards, it’s a journey. It’s what I do and what my life is – I can’t put it into words. And how would you describe your music – you’ve been likened to Joni Mitchell, would you agree with that? It’s a huge compliment but personally the influence didn’t really come from her – I didn’t get into Joni Mitchell until beautiful o , just a couple s of years ago, and my song writing started 15-16 years ago. What can I say? I just like to tell stories, real stories – and for me it’s always about the voice and the melody describing it right now would be acoustic. I’m actually a piano player

Do you feel that the music you wrote when in Norway differs in comparison to the material you’ve written since living here? I think what happens when you see that much talent, meet new people and see gigs is that unconsciously you get so inspired by people. I didn’t see this at all in Norway – people don’t get up on stage and start playing like they do here. There are some massive talents, but the thing about music for is that you have to be hungry for it and try everything. In Norway it’s quite easy to have it as a hobby, as most people want to have a safe life – whereas when you are here, well – safe’s got nothing to do with it. If you find your audience there’s a big shift in the writing because you find yourself in it, and you can’t do that without putting yourself out there.

Hi ladies, what can you tell us about Sense of Sound? J: First and foremost Sense of Sound is a company – the choir is a walking example of our ethos, which is accessibility, multiculturalism, intergenerational. We look for a passion that someone brings and I think that’s really evident when you see the choir. It’s high-spirited, high energy, very diverse and people’s musical journeys are very different sometimes and that’s what works so well. I started some workshops after writing about black women and music, in Liverpool, and I thought about the women that I knew that had really influenced me, and I thought of Perri, and of Saphena (Aziz) and of Juliet (Russell) our two other directors. We got together and talked about forming the company and that’s how it was started. Have you found Liverpool a receptive city for your work? J: The thing that’s never faltered or changed is the spirit of the city; the people, the friendliness, the humour and the creativity that exists here. There’s always been a really strong musical presence in the city – I’m not always personally happy that it’s always been very white- only. And I think that this is us trying to redress the balance because we’re all about mix; not one over the other, but a blend and a fusion of lots of things that represent life in the city. P: I mean Liverpool music can’t just be about the Beatles, which is what people instantly think of when you say music. J: What I think is really interesting about our choir is that we have people from all over the world singing – we have singers from Israel, Venezuela, Nigeria, Norway and Morocco.

And how have you found doing television, in particular the competitive element in ‘Last Choir Standing’? P: It’s amazing. I had very mixed feelings about it but one of the biggest things I got out of it was being able to meet all those other choirs from all over the country. In a sense we all have a very similar kind of spirit, although we differ musically – the community amongst everybody is very similar.

You have worked alongside some notable contemporary musicians – Damon Albarn is a patron for example – how did you get involved with him? J: There was a festival called Sing London, and one of the artistic directors, Juliet Russell, is based there - we were one of the main organisations to be leading workshops and big voice projects within that festival. There was a press launch, and we were asked to demonstrate what we did. Bob, one of the organisers from Greenpeace said afterwards he had a project he’d commissioned Damon and Brian Eno and Massive Attack to write - this 16 minute piece called Five Minutes to Midnight. We learnt the piece in a few hours and did the performance on the Greenpeace boat on the Thames, hundreds of people lined the banks of the river – it was to stop more trident missiles being introduced into Britain – and there started our relationship with Damon. How do you incorporate the community with the work you do? J: We’ve just been commissioned to do 12 months’ training with hard to reach young people across the city – which is part of a national initiative, funded by Youth Music. We will go into the community and get young people who we’ve trained to show other young people what they’ve learnt as a way to encourage them to get involved with life. And what’s this I hear about an upcoming album? P: Over the next 12 months we’re putting together a CD. Lots of people have been asking where our CD is, so we’re getting together and doing one. The vast majority of it will be original material. Up until now we have been doing covers in our particular style... J: Our plan is to coincide the release of our album with the launch of an a cappella festival here in Liverpool in October 2010. It will be the first in the UK. How can people become involved with Sense of Sound? J: We have an introduction to singing course beginning in September, which is for people who want to dip their toe in. It leads on to the Singing in Harmony course, which is much more repertoire based, and there’s a performance at the end of it at The Bluecoat. It’s true that song makes you happy singing releases serotonin and stress and you feel so much better, it just lifts your spirits. I think that’s the basis of our company it's about nurturing and making a difference. P: There’s nothing that beats seeing those kids, the ones that are really shy and retiring, come out of themselves and the confidence it instils in them is amazing.

NETWORKING Many people think that networking is an opportunity to sell face to face. But it doesn’t work that way – not if you want it to be effective. How many times have you been introduced to someone and they start rabbiting on about their business –some of the time you don’t even know what they are on about? Even less interested in hearing in-depth about how fantastic their widget is – personally I can’t wait to get away!

N

ow, I appreciate that time is precious and you need to make the most of your time networking. What I would suggest is, rather than get a million cards from people who - at the end of the day - will not remember you, it’s better to have a handful of people you have created an impression with. Ask them to tell you a little about themselves. They will probably

you have finished talking to the person, ask for their card. If they don’t have one, ask them to write down their details on the back of one of yours. Once you do part company, write down on their card something about them, a reminder of exactly who they are, for example: ‘Tall guy wearing dotty shirt’, or ‘woman with red bag - spoke about daughter Carrie and husband Cliff’. The more you write down the better. I can assure you, the next day you will not be sure if Mike, Mark or Charles was the guy with the spotty shirt! Next day, send a handwritten card. Yes, a proper handwritten card – no email – no internet card either. Just a small card with a flower on or just the words ‘thank you’. Packs of cards like these are available from many supermarkets at very little cost. Say something like: ‘It was great to meet you at....... Hope you managed to get home before Cliff was in bed, had a good holiday etc. Write your mobile number on the card and sign with your first name only. If they can’t remember you they will at least be intrigued (I have had calls to thank me for my cards). Five years on I have gone into offices of people I have met through network events and my card is still pinned on the wall! Your real objective is to get another meeting where you can continue to build warm, long lasting relationships that will help your business grow in more ways than the one-off sale.

start telling you what they do, what they are selling and why it’s great. Act interested, maybe delve a little deeper. Ask a couple of questions that aren’t business-based. What kind of hobbies do you have? Do you have a family, or maybe you’re planning a nice holiday? Ask what would be useful for them to get out of tonight. See if there is a contact that may help them in some way or benefit from what they are selling. You have gone into networking with the right attitude, been genuinely interested in the person(s) you have met, struck up great rapport and maybe even thought of contacts for them. That’s only the beginning. No point in doing all this correctly and then letting the whole warm and friendly contact cool off. Once

It’s a hard job we have here in the food section of the magazine – gallivanting across Merseyside, stuffing our gills with food from all the top recommended eateries in the region. It’s a tough life. Tougher on our waistlines though... Anyway – this issue we waggled our fingers in the lucky dip and drew three corkers from the hat. The elegant execution of new classics at Blakes set the bar for a trio of top evenings out and we weren’t disappointed. Chaophraya has earned a sparkling rep over the region and won many national awards in the process, and new kid on the block – Merchants Bar and Restaurant – looks set to make waves on the Castle Street scene once again. A Beatles themed hotel has been a surprisingly long time coming in Liverpool – but they say that good things come to those who wait. The Hard Days Night Hotel is a tasteful homage to the fab four – affectionate nods to the band can be spotted everywhere from the ceiling decorations to cocktail names, but one thing that isn’t taken lightly is the quality. We arrived at adjoining Blakes restaurant (named after Sir Peter Blake, designer of the Sgt Peppers album cover) for dinner – a sexy, sleek space with the obligatory Beatles artwork, a bustling open kitchen and an eclectic customer base. Sipping the refreshing, light and dry English white (yup, you heard me right) – Denbies Flint Valley Dry White, NV Surrey (£23.00), we surveyed the menu. The first thing that grabs your attention is the twist in the tale of each meal. From standard beginnings are born delectable delights – a goats cheese starter is the norm these days; but one with an asparagus panacotta to accompany the ruby beetroot (£6.50) and flash of aged balsamic – well, now we’re talking. Tang of cheese, mellow beetroot and delicate flavour of the asparagus through the panacotta, delicious. My friend enjoyed the richness of the duck patties, white truffle sausage and sautéed foie gras (£8.95) with spring onion and orange salad, in fact he barely uttered a word – thumbs up. The seared monkfish, atop a crushed, warm and intensely buttery new potato and fennel salad (£22.95) was framed by a coral swirl of crayfish and chervil veloute and was every inch as

tasty, moreish, light and satisfying as one would hope. My dining partner’s Conway Valley lamb trio of braised shoulder, double cutlet and sweetbread, potato crisp, honey glazed vegetables and redcurrant jus (£24.95) was resplendent as it was delivered from the kitchen. A taste can confirm it was lusciously pink and heady with flavour – and perfectly portioned for my hungry companion. Feeling full, we requested a taster selection of desserts (£6£7) – envisaging delicate morsels of saccharine loveliness – our stomachs groaned as we saw two plates laden with every dessert on the menu make its way towards us... I’d like to say we tasted a wee bit here and there. I’d be lying. Every dish was so utterly scrumptious that a napkin had to be placed over my friend’s white chocolate mousse for fear of spontaneous combustion. My particular favourites were the juicy passion fruit cheesecake and the rhubarb and rosewater lattice pie – ooh, and the mint truffle profiterole. And maybe the apple and sultana turnover. Oh, okay – all of them.

Who's that guy or girl that stands there in the restaurant seemingly doing nothing apart from opening the odd bottle of wine and chatting with the diners? Hopefully they are a professional sommelier and should be a trusted source of knowledge to guests and a respected member of the establishment. A good sommelier should be schooled in oenology, spirits, waters, beers, well

the list is endless. Such knowledge can only be passed down. Fortunately for myself I was schooled by Professor Guiseppe Vaccarini(best sommelier of the world 1978). The most important thing I've learned from him, is that knowledge is key, but humility is the pre-requisite. An understanding of people goes a long way to being a successful sommelier. The sommelier might work from a list of 50 to 5000 different labels of wines, but be sure that he will

Formerly Room, Merchants has done a great job of putting its stamp on the high-domed Georgian space. The bar area has changed, now protruding into the middle of the room in a square which makes it more welcoming – think ‘Cheers’ but without the barflies. Sitting in a quiet corner we looked at the impressive but thankfully jargon-free menu, pleasantly surprised by the variety of choice available. We nibbled on marinated olives and sun blushed tomatoes (£2.95) to whet our appetites before we dived into our food. On recommendation I ordered Tempura soft shell crab, radish and crab coleslaw, (£6.25). The crab was battered in its shell and arrived looking beautiful; a crisp, delicately battered crab, halved on top of a bed of homemade coleslaw. An absolutely stunning starter that has to be tried to believed, I would go as far as saying that this is the best start to a meal I have had dining in Liverpool (high praise indeed! – Ed). My friend went for pan fried king prawns, sushi flavoured risotto (£6.95) which was everything you would want from a prawn and risotto dish but without the wow factor of the crab (I'm sorry but it stole the day!). We chinked glasses to a bottle of Vin de Pays d'Oc Rothschild, Pinot Noir from France (£18.95). A warm, rich red with an aromatic bouquet – and perfectly complemented our main course choices. My friend’s pork belly, crushed butternut squash with tomato and

Ooh I love Thai food.” And we do – there’s something colourful and exotic and not wholly familiar about the methods, ingredients, combinations and culture of Thai cuisine, but it’s one us Brits are eager to get to know. With this in mind, we looked forward to our jaunt to the Thai joint of all Thai joints, Chaophraya (which I’m reliably told is pronounced Chow-pie-ia) up on Liverpool ONE’s gastronomic top level. We sat amidst the hustle and bustle of a surprisingly busy Thursday night service – and the open kitchen is truly that. Wall to wall windows, jam-packed with immaculately dressed staff and steam pluming from the many pans on the go. We sat downstairs, but on a trip to the ladies (first floor)I was amazed at the Koi carp pond, the spectacular walled aquariums and private dining box for larger groups – it’s a must see, and must-book! chorizo chutney (£12.95) was a tasty lattice-topped hunk of pork belly, fresh vegetables in cabbage leaf parcels and a stunning quenelle of the chutney. A flavourfilled dish that looked and tasted delicious. The 8oz beef fillet made a beeline for my place-setting; served with homemade chunky chips, air dried tomato (£21.95) and smokey onion rings (£2.50). When I cut into the 2" thick tender fillet I knew this was no ordinary steak. The tower of chips and the delicately battered onion rings were a great accompaniment. Suitable stuffed we decided to go halves on the tiramisu with coffee ice cream (£4.50) portioned hugely and served in a way I hadn't seen before - the tiramisu served in a large cappuccino cup and the ice cream in a tiny espresso cup - absolutely delish! Overall, the food was superb, price was fantastic for the excellent quality, service was personal and attentive and the atmosphere oozed luxury and grandeur. A must visit place that is sure to be a complete success. end at £30 per person, but well worth it. A starter platter arrived with three sauces to dunk and swipe the skewered chicken, marinated prawns, minced Thai fishcake and spring rolls. Each morsel was as delicately flavoured as the next – the contrasting flavours hit the spot and proved that it is the complexities of Thai cuisine that delight. Hubbie and I tucked into the platter with gusto and soon the lemongrass-tinged, coconut and chilli fragrant remnants were whisked away to make room for our mains. All were marvellous – I would highly recommend the Gaeng Massaman Gae lamb dish, so utterly moreish and light I could have tucked into it all night. Other highlights were the enormous King prawns; rare and sizzling sirloin steak, fatly sliced and showered in Thai herbs. Choo Chee was fabulous; fresh fillet of seabass, swimming in a sea of thick, creamy curry sauce. This could easily feed three or four people, and if you’re with a mixed crowd then the set menus offer the perfect solution. We managed to squeeze in a good few mouthfuls of deep-fried ice cream (coconut for me, chocolate for him – around £4-5) but soon had to call time on our evening for fear of ice-cream induced mania. We’ll be back!

LOCAL LOVELIES New seasons mean a whole load of new events and festivals – hurrah! This September Liverpool welcomes a whole host of evenings, events and festivals to the city and The Liverpool Lifestyle Magazine couldn’t be happier. We look at two of our faves for the upcoming weeks – the delectable Liverpool Food and Drink Festival and one of the best shopping streets in the city – Bold Street – that will host its very own independent festival. We can’t wait!

he Liverpool Food and Drink Festival was a long time coming but is now establishing itself as one of the top dates in the foodie calendar. Over fifty of the city’s top bars and restaurants have signed up for this year’s gourmand gala which is set to be a corker. Well known local and national eateries such as The London Carriage Works, Wagamama, Panoramic and Italian Club Fish are the latest establishments to sign up for the annual event which will launch this year on 13 September at Sefton Park. The week-long festival will delight thousands of visitors with constant supplies of culinary wonder – from a la carte fine dining to rustic home cooking – and let’s not forget something to wash it all down with! Cooking demonstrations will entertain as much as the live music and whilst the kids play in the designated area, you can nip off for refreshment in one of the many beer tents. Vince Margiotta, whose Il Forno and Sapporo brands are amongst those sponsoring the event, said: “Slowly we are building a festival to be reckoned with. Our aim is to be lauded as one of the UK’s major food and drink festivals in years to come.” Following on from the success of the Liverpool food and Drink Festival is the wonderful Bold Street Festival – organised and established by the Bold Street Traders Association in the name of one of Liverpool’s most quirky, original, independent and interesting streets. Whilst a few big chains have made their mark on the street, it has done little to budge the small independent shops and companies, standing firm and forming their own working community. The Bold Street Festival 2009 celebrates just that – a festival of independence and originality, and organisers urge people to stop by and enjoy the day on 26 September. There will be everything from Tai Chi and yoga demonstrations, live music and raffles to in-store discounts, a popcorn stand and samples from the bars

and eateries on the street. Utility’s manager, Kate Cowie, explained: “Bold Street Festival is to celebrate the independence and uniqueness that you rarely find in city centres any more. Bold Street benefits from a host of independent specialist retailers and it was felt that collectively we have a much stronger voice and can reinforce the identity of the street locally, regionally, nationally and perhaps as important internationally.” New shops are opening all the time on Bold Street and the festival organisers hope to draw attention to both old and new on the 26th September. HEAVY METAL

Local art consultancy and gallery, dot-art, will host a striking exhibition of sculptural works and drawings by the celebrated local artist, Tony Evans. He is perhaps best known for his piece, ‘Inspiration’ – a huge winged horse commissioned by Liverpool Community College for their Myrtle Street centre in 2008. Tony specialises in animals in action using mainly copper and bronze (often recycled) and the work is a result of hours of intense concentration and physical effort. His spectacular work captures the spirit, energy and splendour of a whole menagerie of animals – from frogs to a magnificent life size Bengal tiger. All work is for sale and admission is free. As part of the Go Penguins project for the Winter Trail, over 100 friendly fellows will flood the city – and a small colony will make their way across the public transport network. An early arrival of one of the colony, nicknamed Perry, was spotted recently on board the famous Mersey Ferries. Councillor Mark Dowd, chair of Merseytravel, welcomed the arrival on board Royal Iris Ferry. He said: “We are proud to support this project which draws together the themes of art and the environment in such an imaginative way. “The Superlambananas captured the public imagination so spectacularly last year and we hope Go Penguins will do likewise.” From mid-November, colonies of small and large penguins will be on display for seven weeks in a special city centre trail. PRESENTATION Business is all about selling; products, topics, or concepts. When making a business presentation the most important thing is to know your material. If you don’t know everything about what you are selling then it’s not likely that the audience will be buying. Keep your audience focused and interested. Making effective business presentations takes practice, but with the following tips up your sleeve, you’ll be ready to take on the challenge...

Use Key Phrases About Your Topic Seasoned presenters use key phrases and include only essential information. Choose only the top three or four points about your topic and make them consistently throughout the delivery. Simplify and limit the number of words on each screen. Try not to use more than three bullet points per slide. The surrounding space will make it easier to read.

Use Slide Designs Effectively When using a design theme (PowerPoint 2007) or design template (earlier versions of PowerPoint), choose one that is appropriate for the audience. A clean, straightforward layout is best if you are presenting to business clientele. Select one that is full of colour and contains a variety of shapes if your presentation is aimed at young children.

Slide Layout is Important Make your presentation slides easy to follow. Put the title at the top of the slide where your audience expects to find it. Phrases should read left to right and top to bottom. Keep important information near the top of the slide. Often the bottom portions of slides cannot be seen from the back rows because heads are in the way.

Limit the Number of Slides Keeping the number of slides to a minimum, ensures that the presentation will not become too long or drawn out. It also avoids the problem of continually changing slides during the presentation that can be a distraction to your audience. On average, about one slide per minute is about right.

Limit Punctuation and Avoid All Capital Letters Punctuation can needlessly clutter the slide and the use of all capitals makes statements more difficult to read and is like SHOUTING at your audience! Avoid Fancy Fonts Choose a font that is simple and easy to read such as Ariel, Verdana or Times New Roman. Avoid script type fonts as they are hard to read on screen. Use, at most, two different fonts – perhaps one for headings and another for content. Keep all fonts large enough (at least 24pt and preferably 30pt) so that people at the back of the room will be able to easily read what is on the screen. Use Contrasting Colours For Text and Background Dark text on a light background is best, but avoid white backgrounds – tone it down by using beige or another light colour that will be easy on the eyes. Dark backgrounds are effective to show off company colours or if you just want to dazzle the crowd. In that case, be sure to make text a light colour for easy reading. Keep your colour scheme consistent throughout your presentation.

Use Photos, Charts and Graphs Combining photos, charts and graphs and even embedding digitised videos with text, will add variety and keep your audience interested in the presentation. Avoid having text only slides. Avoid Excessive Use of Slide Transitions and Animations While transitions and animations can heighten your audience’s interest in the presentation, too much of a good thing can distract them from what you are saying. Remember, the slide show is meant to be a visual aid, not the focus of the presentation. Keep animations consistent in the presentation by using animation schemes and apply the same transition throughout the presentation. Make Sure Your Presentation Can Run On Any Computer Use PowerPoint’s ‘Package for CD’ or ‘Pack and Go’ feature when burning your presentation onto a CD. In addition to your presentation, copy of Microsoft’s PowerPoint Viewer is added to the CD to run PowerPoint presentations on computers that don’t have PowerPoint installed.

Despite a tough economic year for the UK, Liverpool continues to move forward creatively and commercially. It is the spirit and originality of the companies and initiatives involved that continue to be the driving force behind Liverpool’s unique character.

Another Media is one such company. Based in Liverpool the organisation has adapted to change and has offers a range of activities including promotional distribution, design, print, publicity and events. Formed in 2007, the company was set up as a collective, with a core team of full-time staff, and also links with a number of freelancers with different backgrounds who are able to utilise the company structure and facilities to deliver their own projects. Current clients are varied but include Tate Liverpool, Africa Oye, CALM, BBC Big Screen and Baa Bar Corporation, to name but a few! Another Media are currently working on a new project, in partnership with LARC and other relevant parties, to install bespoke leaflet stands into all of the major arts organisations on Merseyside. These stands will only contain the print

One lady with a vision to create something beautiful out of an ugly disease has succeeded in her quest. Sharon Harper, along with photographer Andrew John, has spearheaded a campaign to raise awareness, funds and smiles through the Housewives in Art calendar production for charity Cancer Research UK. The calendar depicts the ladies in replications of classic nude artwork and is itself, a work of art. The bravery of the women involved in the project, and those they posed for, is truly inspiring. We bring you the story of LiverpoolÊs own calendar girls.

t takes a brave lady to bare all in front of a camera, but that’s exactly what happened when mother of four, Sharon Harper, put out a call for women to star in her new calendar. The women who made the final cut come from a variety of backgrounds, are different ages, heights, shapes and sizes. However, they all share one thing; each woman has had their lives affected by cancer. Many have lost friends and relatives to the disease. A few are still fighting it. Sharon approached photographer, Andrew John, and together the Housewives in Art calendar was born. A collection of beautiful nude shots were masterfully altered to replicate classics from artists such as Degas and Vecchio, and the result is a touching, intimate and poignant collection – showing women at both their strongest and most vulnerable. Of her idea, Sharon explains: “My inspiration of the calendar was the realisation that at some point in everyone’s life they’d be told that either they or someone close to them had cancer. “We wanted to use real women for whom taking part in this project would involve overcoming their own insecurities about their bodies. Posing naked is an incredibly brave thing to do – but all of these women recognise that it is nothing in comparison with battling cancer.” Did you know that there are more than 200 types of cancer – each with different causes, symptoms and treatments? Each year in the UK around 293,600 new cases of cancer are diagnosed – meaning most UK citizens have been directly or closely affected by

the disease. Countless fundraising initiatives go far to fund the extensive research into the improvement of cancer drugs, treatments and a cure, but charities like Cancer Research UK need constant funding to carry on with their vital work – and projects like Housewives in Art to raise awareness. Andrew, photographer and creator, also had a vested interest in the project: “I lost my mother to cancer and felt strongly that a creative project that would result in money being raised for Cancer Research was something I wanted to be involved in. “The whole experience has been totally inspiring. Creating this calendar has been a journey for all of us – and the courage that these women have shown throughout has amazed me.” Local councillor, MP candidate and broadcaster, Debi Jones also lent her support by stripping off for her own portrait – admitting it was something she had never envisaged doing: “The last time I came close to anything like this was on stage in the Pyjama Game in my twenties!” she exclaimed. But after talking to Sharon and Andrew, Debi decided it was something that she couldn’t turn down. “I enjoyed it immensely. It was a great experience and very professionally done – I didn’t feel nervous at all; in fact on the set there were only two people – myself and Sharon – until Andrew came in to shoot. “It is for such an extremely good cause, and every photograph was very tastefully done for everyone involved. The calendar was such a good idea, too – the WI’s Calendar Girls was the first of its kind but there have subsequently been an awful lot of copycats; this was something totally different, and very good.” Andrew adds: “I have worked with premier football players, rugby stars and celebrities, but no-one has inspired me like these women. Back to basics This article was going to be an abundance of the benefits of homemade soups, but as I'm sitting here on a dock in the Keys in sunny Florida, the thought of soups and chilly weather is too depressing to contemplate folks. Sorry. It’s all about me, because guess what? I've just lost 15 lbs in 10 days in 90 degree heat surrounded by azure blue ocean. Let me tell you a story, as Max Bygraves would say, are we sitting comfortably?

boarded the plane en route to our family summer holiday. Having worked non stop. Lost some weight (don't be ridiculous!) Anyone that knows me would say the same. I'm currently two stone overweight, couldn't care less - or could i? I have never been on a diet, don't believe in them, I love my food too much. Yes I eat healthily and like most of us if I exercised more I'd lose the two stone I need to, which in my book is the only way to live - a balance of exercise and healthy eating. So, on arriving, I called in at the Hippocrates Health Institute, West Palm Beach, Florida, (showbiz eh!) where one of my friends work. This is turning into a busman's holiday - I talk cleanses, detox, skin issues seven days a week, and my 11 year old was saying "Mother get over yourself, give us all a break, how can you do this at Disneyworld", but I was really in the zone and wanted to do this; every day I talk about bloating, indigestion, gas, diarrhoea, constipation. But now I hear that according to the world gastroenterology organisation, 70m of us are feeling below par because of these digestive complaints, and a growing body of research is uncovering a deeper concern - these upsets are intricately linked to the won't budge fat that plague 67% of us. Both conditions are due to a severe deficiency in metabolically active enzymes. I have learned there is a surprisingly easy fix for enzyme deficiencies - I'll keep this brief so as not to bore you here - eating 70% raw food increases cellular enzyme levels as much as tenfold in 4 days, and sticking with the plan for 10 days as I have (respect!?) floods the body with so many enzymes and nutrients that the pancreas and liver are able to focus on eliminating toxins and converting stored fat into usable energy. This optimises metabolism producing the fastest (and easiest) weight loss you'll ever experience: Skin looks great AND I've lost most of my cellulite - move over ULRIKAKAKAKAAA! September is an ideal month to complete a raw food detox plan since supermarkets are overflowing with what you need to succeed - a huge variety of delicious fruit and veg. Note to all, something I preach to all my clients, enjoy your fruit in the morning as the body's ability to flush trapped fluids and toxins and metabolise stored fats peak between 6am and noon, so fill up in the morning. A SAMPLE DAY...BREAKFAST, unlimited enzyme rich fresh fruit, such as watermelon, apple slices, cantaloupe, kiwin fruit, strawberry, blueberry, pineapple, frshly squeezed orange juice. LUNCH, salad, 3 cups of mixed greens with unlimited chopped vegetables like peppers, cherry tomatoes, half avocado sliced, mix in 1tblsp olive oil, 1tsp lemon juice. DINNER, 4 oz grilled tuna or salmon, at least 1 cup raw vegetables and salad mixed with red wine vinegar and olive oil, unlimited lightly steamed veg ( I had peppers, broccoli, and carrots mixed in 4 oz organic wine - yahoo some wine!). ou see, I think we have it all wrong when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. If this year was a play or movie, at this point in time, heading towards the last quarter of the year, we’d be at the beginning the ‘Final Act’ – the little quiet before the most exciting bit. Even if you aren’t a student of the dramatic arts, you may still be aware that in the standard story-telling form, there are three main ‘acts’ or sections. The first introduces the characters in their everyday situations and leads us through an intertwining of their stories into one coherent tale around a central shared issue, theme or problem. The second act then involves how the characters are called or pulled, because of that central point, from those normal lives into a situation that requires them to question the way things are and grow or change in some way. And in many of what I’d mark as the best tales, there’s also an ‘inversion’ or crisis; a point at which doubts creep in and the level of commitment and determination required to get through to the end is revealed to be even greater than first thought – where doubts creep in, emotions are high and it looks as though all may be lost. And then comes the final act, usually preceded by a slight lull or dip as the protagonists gather themselves and plan for the final push to the climactic moments and the denouement to follow. That’s where we’re at now in the annual calendar – the slight lull before the final push. You see, it’s NOW that the plans are really made to create the success that the major characters are after and, if there’s a sequel to be had, it’s also in this final act that the seeds begin to be sown and hints made as to what might follow. It’s rare, if ever, that the plans are made at the very beginning and, if they are, they’ve usually been abandoned by the second act because they didn’t work. More to the point, if you think about your favourite movies or plays, the plans that succeed are often quite the opposite of what would’ve been produced by the character’s original mindset. When it comes to New Year’s resolutions – the beginning of the

movie of your life for that year – how often have you abandoned plans made in January by the ‘end of the first act’ or before? I think it’s because they’re made in a rush at the wrong time, after the madness and excitement of the holiday season. Or - they come from the way we’ve been thinking in previous years and we didn’t give enough thought to them and whether they are what are best, or we’re just doing them because we ought to. The best time for planning those resolutions is right NOW. We’ve had the first and second acts to reflect on already and there’s often that little lull in many people’s lives post-summer (unless you’re a teacher, in which case, a few weeks back might’ve been more suitable- sorry!). We now know what’s worked so far and what hasn’t and are probably better placed than at any other time of year to decide what’s best to do for the year’s final act

and make plans for our sequel – 2010! There’s also another great reason to sort out your plans and begin to take action on them now – when it comes to the end of the year, you’ll already have done something and got some momentum up so that - even if you coast through the holidays it’ll be so much easier to get going again in the New Year. So, how will your story of 2009 end? “Happily ever after”..? “To Be Continued”..? Or perhaps some other way that, if you think about it now, would set the scene for a sequel like no other? Remember, it’s your story, so it is entirely up to you. Just do yourself a favour and make that choice now, in the little quite before the final rush. The futuristic gleam of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral can be seen for miles ! its space-age design catching the eye of commuters, tourists and locals alike. Its incorporation of cubism, modernism and vast vibrant swathes of colour make the interior something of a masterpiece and has attracted visitors far and wide. The spectacular design ! inside and out ! is truly something to behold and the design and build of such an iconic structure is a testament to LiverpoolÊs creative spark and forward-thinking. We delved into the colourful historic world of the cityÊs Catholic home. The Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral cuts an impressive figure in the city’s skyline – but only a couple of centuries ago it would have been a seemingly impossible dream to have such a striking place of Catholic worship in the UK, let alone Liverpool. Cathedral Dean, Canon Anthony O’Brien, spoke to The Liverpool Lifestyle Magazine about the importance of the cathedral to the city. He said: “The cathedral as the seat (cathedra) of the Archbishop of Liverpool is a spiritual home to Catholics of this whole region and as well as being the venue for important services within the Diocese. “Along with our sister cathedral at the other end of Hope Street we are an integral part of the life of the city. To complete the picture, every week, we welcome thousands of tourists and visitors to our building.” The Irish potato famine of 1847 saw Liverpool’s Catholic population shoot up dramatically, this – coupled with the restoration of the hierarchy - gave Catholics renewed confidence and a voice in a city that was prepared to listen. The first commission to design a Catholic cathedral for the city was in 1853 and entrusted to Edward Welby Pugin. The striking design, incorporating a dominant central steeple, was partly finished and formed the Lady Chapel where it stood for a century before being demolished in the 1980s. A site was found on Brownlow Hill – the former Poor Law Institution or Work House – which had been a shelter for the destitute and desolate people of the city for over 150 years. In 1941 Sir Edward Lutyens was commissioned to build a cathedral here that contrasted with the impressive Anglican Cathedral that was in progress on the other side of the aptly named Hope Street. WWII halted the progress, and Lutyens’ designs were deemed over-ambitious and complex – leaving only the Crypt in the present cathedral. The design was scaled down and re-jigged by Adrian Gilbert Scott – brother of Giles, architect for the Anglican Cathedral – in 1953, and it was this interception that paved the way for the structure we see today. Fast forward seven years, and a worldwide call was put out for imaginative designers and architects hungry for a challenge. The remit was to design a cathedral for Liverpool which would relate to the existing crypt, be capable of construction within five years, cost no more than £1m (relative to 1960), and express the new spirit of the liturgy. Of the 300 entrants, it was the design of Sir Frederick Gibberd that struck a chord with the panel, and building began in 1962. The cathedral of 2009 is undoubtedly a place of

joyous worship, impassioned faith and community spirit – Liverpool has put its mark inside the cathedral where the enormous central space is circled by ten chapels, each as individual as the next. The magnificent central tower sends rainbow lights in a shower of colour, lighting up an immense space and somehow giving it a feeling of warmth and safety. Starting and settling into a new school, whether it’s from nursery to primary or from primary to secondary, can be a daunting and anxious time for both children and parents. The greatest transition is often from primary to secondary school where children suddenly find themselves back at the bottom of hierarchical ladder. Parents are expected to step back and give their child a greater degree of independence; therefore letting go can also be an issue.

E

ach child’s reaction to starting a new school will be different but it’s important to plan ahead to ensure any problems are headed off or addressed at the outset. Most schools have programs and literature in place to help parents deal with this process. Induction evenings and taster days, usually held at the end of the summer term, are all designed to help parents prepare for the changes ahead and for the children to settle in more quickly. Here are some tips to help you and your child adjust during those first few weeks of term. Be positive and try to hide any of your own anxieties. Give your child plenty of reassurance. Remind your child that all the other children in their class will be feeling the same way. Get to know your child’s new teacher. Hopefully you may have already met them through an induction event but if not then organise a short meeting. Remember it is going to take time for your child to settle in and for your family to establish a new routine. Keeping a consistent routine will help everyone cope. Ask your child about their day at school and make time to discuss what has been going on. Try to focus on the positive aspects and monitor issues over time rather than react to them as soon as they arise. Be prepared for a mixture of emotions over the first few weeks. Help your child be prepared by encouraging them to organise

what they need for school each day. Help them pack their bag each night and make it a routine before TV or bed or just after tea. Go through their timetable to help them get used to organising their week. Keep an eye on homework, there will a bit a lot more of it! Help them manage this increased pressure by providing a quiet space in which to work undisturbed by others. Your child will be expected to work more independently so they should be encouraged gradually to work on their own. They will be emotionally worn out, so no late nights but lots of treats. Use the weekends to try and establish new friends. Get to know other parents in your child’s class. Encourage your child to keep in touch with old friends who may have gone to a different school. Attend school events and do not wait for the first parents evening to address any problems.

As summer fades out and we rapidly approach autumn, there are still lots of jobs to be completed before the onslaught of winter, our gardening guru Steven shares his expert advice on how to have your garden gleaming in time for the first frosts.

So - where to start Now is a good time to divide your herbaceous perennials and place in allocated areas of your garden. For those lucky enough to grow their own fruit make sure you pick apples and blackberries as they start to ripen for use in pies and desserts. Cut out fruited canes of raspberries but wait to prune blackcurrants until the leaves have fallen. You can also lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners. Net or cage ripening fruit to protect them from wildlife.

For those who grow their own vegetables: Pick out tomatoes and ripen indoors by the end of September. Dig up remaining potatoes before slugs damage them. Regularly pick French beans, runner beans, courgettes, cucumbers and peppers to prevent them becoming tough or bitter and to encourage further crops.

Trees and shrubs: Late summer flowering shrubs can be pruned this month. Give evergreen hedges a final cut ready for winter. If the weather is already autumnal you can now plant and move shrubs and trees without having to worry about their survival. Clear fallen leaves from borders. Get down to your local garden centre to purchase a vast selection of bulbs for that wonderful spring colour.

Always remember to keep up the watering of newly planted trees and shrubs. Keep dead-heading summer bedding in pots and baskets to keep them flowering through to October.

Lawns Continue mowing till the first frost arrives. Start to think about autumn/winter lawn care which includes scarifying, aerating and top dressing. You can prepare your lawn for winter by applying a fertilizer which is high in potassium. You can do this after scarifying and aerating but before applying a top dressing. When applying top dressing work it into the lawn using a stiff brush so that the grass protrudes above the dressing. There is still time for lawn repair using seed which should be done

by the middle of September. Hopefully we will still have some dry days which will allow us time to paint fences, sheds and other wooden features. For these jobs use a water based preservative. The best gardens grow out of good design and planning and the way you want to use your garden determines how it evolves. September can be a good month to sit and reflect on this, then put together your project so that work can be carried out and completed so that the garden is ready to use for spring and summer next year. I

waited almost 53 years to drive what to many is regarded as one of the last ‘proper’ British sports cars. That’s ‘proper’ in that it’s been designed and manufactured in the UK by enthusiasts who instinctively know what makes a great sports car. And boy, when it was delivered, did I show my age! The last time I drove a Lotus was a nervous foray along the Formby bypass back in the early eighties at the wheel of an Esprit Turbo; not a Lotus sports car as such, rather a fully paid up member of the supercar club. I was a lot younger and fitter then, and took the wheel with nary a tweak to my back, arms or legs. It was a different story a few weeks ago when Lotus lent me a Europa SE for the weekend; it literally took me five minutes to get in and ease myself behind the wheel; ‘are you sitting comfortably?’ took on a whole new meaning - it was all well worth it though … well, what’s an extra five minutes when you’ve been waiting over half a century? The Europa SE boasts a distinguished heritage which includes models like the iconic Elan, Esprit and Éclat; that heritage has been carried forward to the 21st century with the new Evora that’s been wowing the motoring press since its launch a few months ago. In the Europa’s case, SE does not mean special edition but more sporting equipment – this is the fastest Europa, along with the best equipped and, at £32,293, the priciest too, although no amount of money can buy the visceral thrills of driving such a feisty car … So, once behind the wheel, it’s worth spending a few minutes appreciating what a proper sports car’s like. Lotus have kept to the basics with hip hugging ‘grippy’ seats, pedals perfectly spaced and arranged, a gearlever which falls easily to hand and a brilliant ‘engine start’ button which they could have named ‘launch control’ … this car will rocket to sixty in under five seconds and hit 146 mph thanks to its Vauxhall derived 225 PS turbocharged engine; it’s so quick the steering wheel ‘dances’ in your hand under hard acceleration. Scintillating? Definitely. Scary? Initially yes, but the Europa has a Jekyll and Hyde character which means it’s well behaved around town, with its red blooded side only revealed once let off the leash. And that Lotus position? Yes, it’s difficult to get into the car but I can guarantee that once you’ve driven the Europa SE, it’s even harder to get out … 59
