AMAZING GRACE TRIBUTE
The Bishop of Liverpool, James Jones, recently unveiled a brand new commission by artist Stephen Broadbent dedicated to the memory of reformed slaver, former Tide Surveyor of Liverpool and author of the hymn, ‘Amazing Grace’, John Newton. It is the first memorial to Newton, a former slave ship captain
who found faith in religion and campaigned with MP William Wilberforce to abolish slavery, on this side of the Atlantic. Bishop Jones explained: “John Newton
commanded a slave ship and didn’t realise the inhumanity that he was guilty of. He was the only slave ship commander to give evidence to the Parliamentary Commission that led to the abolition of the slave trade. “On the streets of this city the battle was fought to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire. So when we unveil this memorial for this universal anthem, we do not do it lightly.” The artwork is comprised of three pierced steel plates which represent the three continents, Africa, America and Europe. They are connected by a glazed panel representing the Atlantic and etched with patterns of the former slave trading routes – the words and musical notes from ‘Amazing Grace’ flow through the artwork. The commission is one of the last phases of the new £10.5m Pier Head Ferry Terminal building.

TATE REVEALS SUMMER STUNNER
Tate Liverpool unveiled the subject of its 2010 summer exhibition will be the one and only Pablo Picasso. The exhibition will be an in-depth examination of Picasso as a politically and socially engaged artist during the Cold War period, and is the first of its kind. Bringing together over 150 works by the great artist, the major exhibition will be presented at Tate Liverpool from 21 May to 30 August 2010. Picasso: Peace and Freedom will reveal a fascinating new insight into the artist’s life as a tireless political activist and campaigner for peace, challenging the widely-held view of the artist as a creative genius, playboy and compulsive extrovert. The announcement follows a run of hugely successful exhibition for the prestigious gallery. In 2008 visitors were able to view a collection of Gustav Klimt’s works, and currently Tate Liverpool is enjoying a rainbow of activity with the Colour Chart exhibition. Fed up with bars overpopulated with slavering, intoxicated youths listening to a cacophony of terrible tunes? So were we – so we went down to Parr Street, the home of the official hidden gem of Liverpool, Studio 2. Its inconspicuousness is its allure to the frazzled socialite who wants to sit in a relaxed environment amongst friends, enjoy a good natter and soak up the atmosphere. A renovated recording studio, the bar retains many original features, including enormous builtin speakers, the separate rooms for drums and the bass (with weirdly differing acoustics) and the mixing desk viewing glass – very cool. Its mix of modern retro and chilled out chic attracts an amiable bunch of music lovers and those just wanting a fun evening. MATHEW STREET MANIA!
The Mathew Street Music Festival is on its way and after a few past blips, organisers promise it’s going to be bigger and better than ever! Over 300 bands are set to perform this year, covering six outdoor stages over the course of the two day festival. New to this year’s event – August 30 and 31 – will be the addition of ‘themed stages’ focusing on cultures which have influenced Liverpool music, including Irish, American, country and western as well as an 80s stage and a rock stage. The Mathew Street fringe festival, which debuted last year, is to be repeated and expanded with around 40 venues taking part. Council leader Warren Bradley, said: “The festival is a major highlight of the city’s cultural calendar and each year we are building it and making it bigger and better. “The quality, variety and breadth of the music means there will be something for the whole family to enjoy in a safe environment – and crucially it is all free of charge.” 7

GEORGE AT ST GEORGE
This Saturday 1 August will see musicians from across the world come together to honour George Harrison, ‘The Quiet Beatle’, in two planned concerts in tribute to the star. The concerts, due to be held at St George’s Hall, celebrate the start of a special free exhibition – also held at the Hall – which will see the world’s biggest collection of George Harrison memorabilia in the city. The concerts and exhibition have been arranged by fans’ group ‘For George’. Member, Denise Theophilus, said: “Everyone working on these projects believe not enough has been done to pay tribute to one of the greatest musicians and humanitarians of all time, but the exhibition and the concert will be a great start. “The musicians from Italy and the US are paying their own air fares simply because they want to be part of these wonderful celebrations for George. We want the maximum number of fans to come and see these fabulous musicians, especially because all the profits will be donated to George’s own charity – The Material World Charitable Fund.” To tie in with his lucky number seven, there will be seven parts, each looking at a different aspect of his life. These include ‘When we was Fab’ which covers the early years of the Beatles, and ‘It’s What You Value’ which highlights some of George’s favourite things including Monty Python, George Formby and Formula One motor racing. Tickets are available from The Beatles Shop, Mathew Street, FACT or www.wegottickets.com

Liverpool is home to a plethora of musical talent – there’s something about this small city of ours that produces a unique sound of its own and has inspired countless others to follow suit. That’s why I was so excited to hear I would be chatting to Ian Broudie – front man of The Lightning Seeds, producer, musician, composer, TV presenter and the man behind one of the most famous football anthems in UK history. Ian’s musical background is as wide and varied as you can get – he started out in the 1970s in semi-legendary punk band ‘Big in Japan’ (whose members included Holly Johnson and Bill Drummond). In 1983, Broudie teamed up with ex-Wild Swans singer Paul Simpson to form the duo Care. Care signed to the Arista label and released three singles, My Boyish Days, Flaming Sword and Whatever Possessed You. Ian went back to dabble in more production work for bands such as the Icicle Works and Frazier Chorus. In 1989, though, Ian turned to writing songs. He recorded Cloudcuckooland and chose the name Lightning Seeds, hoping that one day this little side project would become a band. Over the years Ian has experienced musical success with The Lightning Seeds, has produced Liverpool bands like The Zutons and The Coral, co-wrote and performed the soundtrack to Euro ’96 with ‘Three Lions’ and released his own solo works. He admits to experiencing ‘temporary insanity’ over a particularly tumultuous few years in his personal life, but his experiences are reflected in his passion for music and in the band’s newly released album – Four Winds. The Lightning Seeds are back in their home town of Liverpool this summer to mark their 20th anniversary in style on 26 July at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall as part of the annual Summer Pops, and we can’t wait. When you first formed Lightning Seeds, did you ever envisage celebrating your 20th anniversary? I had no idea it was that long since I recorded Pure ,when I made the first Lightning Seeds album I thought I hope get to make another one, I still think that. You rose to fame at the height of the Brit Pop era – what are your most memorable moments of that time? I predate Britpop actually, Jollification the third album was released at that time. Somehow it got caught up in the Britpop mix and lumped in. In recent years you’ve turned your hand to producing; was this a natural progression or a planned career move? I've never really had a plan, I started producing before the Lightning Seeds with Echo and the Bunnymen, The Fall, The Pale Fountains, The Wedding Present and many others. You released the no.1 football anthem, Three Lions, back in ’96 and it’s still regarded as the official England tune – where did you go right where so many others went wrong? I think 3 lions is essentially a sad song, sometimes its pretty frustrating supporting a football team and I think it reflected that and people related to it. Plus it's a catchy melody. What does Liverpool mean to you – personally and professionally? Liverpool is like nowhere else I've been, it's unique, in the end it's always home, the more it changes the more it stays the same. What are thoughts on the UK music scene at the moment – has anything as influential as the Brit Pop era made an impact of the youth of the noughties? UK music seems less art and more design these days but it still has its moments.
How has your music evolved with time – do you think it’s changed at all? I don't know and I care less than I probably should. Your musical origins are in the punk scene – who would list as your influences at that time, and is there anyone out there now that you admire? My influences were probably a lot of New York bands like the Ramones, Television, Blondie mixed in with Syd Barret, Dylan and various psychedelia all lumped together with the friends who hung around Mathew Street in Erics Probe and various pubs, arguing and obsessing about music whenever we could. Are you looking forward to your summer performance in Liverpool? I'm really looking forward to playing at the Phil, it's always been an ambition - I hope it'll be a great night. Do you think Liverpool has a different sound – or stands apart musically from the rest of the UK? I think there is a certain connectivity between most of the bands that come out of the city but it's hard to put your finger on what exactly it is. And so, to the future – what does it hold? In the future ...Some gigs, some writing, some producing, I'm really looking forward to playing new songs from Four Winds my new album - and I hope I get to make another one soon. For tickets call The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on 0151 709 3789. For more information on this year’s Summer Pops visit www.cmpentertainment.com Interview by Jenny Morris. 11

The sun is finally out (kind of), and it’s time to get ourselves kitted out for the summer. And what says ‘summer’ more than sun/mud-drenched festivals, floaty cool dresses and floppy hats. With so many of us pitching tents or picnic rugs at outdoor events this summer, we need to make sure we look hot, even if the weather isn’t. Embrace floral prints if you want a simple update to your wardrobe, and crop tops are a great way to update your summer wardrobe, and add a hint of colour to sunglasses to up the fashion ante. Big prints are still popular and have been seen on the catwalks of Gucci and in Chloe’s ready-to-wear section, teamed with feminine dresses and gladiator shoes, this is a really easy look with high impact and can take you from day to night. It isn't just what you know, and it isn't just who you know. It's actually who you know, who knows you, and what you do for a living. ~ Bob Burg
EVERY ISSUE WE ASK TOP NETWORKERS FOR THEIR ADVICE. Paul Knowles, PKPR, on the importance of communication. What is networking exactly and how can it benefit you? The basic idea is meeting people, talking to them, and the most importantly learning from them. After all communication is the secret to success. Do some people always seem to be in the know? This is because they network. You have to get out there and communicate with people. The first step in networking is developing a list of contacts. You know a lot more people than you think you do. Think of all the people you have met through school, university, social functions, and jobs. You may not have become friends with them all, but if you were given an introduction, you know them. Make a list of your family, friends, and neighbours first and then expand outward from there. The important thing about networking is that you continue to expand your list. Keep it organised and set goals for yourself so that you continue to add to it. With an increasing network of contacts, you are sure to be successful.

May Fifteen is a brand new business development service designed to help SME’s across the North West raise their profile, generate new leads and build long-term business relationships. Launched by entrepreneur, Jeni Banks, May Fifteen was set up in direct response to the city’s expanding calendar of events, the economic downturn and growth in redundancies and, as a result, time sensitivities for middle and senior management. The company offers its clients a full-time networking representative, allowing business owners to concentrate on the day-to-day running of their company whilst someone is out networking on their behalf. Jeni, managing director, explains: “The company is designed to save businesses money, and more importantly, time. A lot of directors simply don’t have the time to attend regular events, don’t enjoy networking or don’t want to employ someone in-house. “May Fifteen was created to ensure company owners can stay connected to the business community without the excess costs.” Jeni adds: “Our approach is to analyse new client businesses firstly collaborating to agree targets and objectives then planning the process on how to achieve these. Each client will receive a ‘Corporate Analysis Pack’ containing competitor, industry, product & service, client and geographical reports. This information allows our team to understand client needs and deliver specifically targeted leads by networking on their behalf.” For further information visit: www.mayfifteen.co.uk or contact the team at info@mayfifteen.co.uk

The foodie team here at LLM Towers have had a ball this month – not only have we been able to indulge in our passion for all things Italian with the delectable Italian Club Fish and Zeligs restaurants, but we’ve also been treated to another favourite of ours; locally sourced English gourmet grub and flagons of cider at new tavern, The Orchard. Liverpool is, without a shadow of a doubt, fast becoming the place to dine in the northwest. The city is now home to cuisines that span the globe, firmly planting us up there in the top UK cities to tantalise our tastebuds. With more eateries opening up in the city regularly, and experiencing success, it’s clear that we are a city that loves our food, and long may it continue.

The Wine Room
Zeligs is one of the latest offerings from the team behind Liverpoolbased Korova Corps. Walking in you are transported to New York city c.1930. Classic Italian scenes adorn the walls; fresh meat and cheese sit behind the bar overlooked by wild boars’ heads all culminate to give a chic Italian Rococo theme. The more you look the more you see how truly unique and creative the decor actually is, bare concrete floors, heating ducts and bare brick walls are juxtaposed with ornate luxurious chandeliers. Totally unpretentious but effortlessly elegant. We were greeted and seated in the bar area where we had a drink until our table was ready. The romantically lit, spacious room was warming and welcoming. After being seated we ordered a bottle of the house wine, Santa Serena, (Sauvingion Blanc - Chile - £14.95) which was crisp, fruity and a perfect summer’s eve tipple. To start I chose the 'Gamberoni Piccanti' (£6.95), sautéed king prawns served on a toasted ciabatta with chilli butter and lemon, which was stunning; the meaty prawns were huge and so tasty in the warming chilli butter - a real stand out starter. My other half went for Arancinial Formaggio Di Capra (v) (£4.95), crisp arancini rice balls with goat’s cheese, spiced with chilli, rosemary and sweet pepper compote. After a short pause, long enough for another glass of wine, the mains were brought to the table, I had ordered a stand out dish on the menu, the Filetto Rossini (£22.95), Fillet of beef, sweet potato fondant, seared foie gras with wild mushroom fricassee. The beautiful cut of beef adorned with the tender fois gras was a
formidable pairing, these really were chalk and cheese textures but together they were a marriage made in heaven. My adventurous date went for the Fegato di vitello (£13.95), panfried calves liver, caramelised figs, truffle mash and crisp pancetta. The contrast of the sweet figs against the sharp saltiness of the pancetta and the velvety texture of the liver made the dish a striking and deliciously memorable meal. Even though it felt like we couldn’t squeeze in any more, one look at the dessert menu and we were hooked. My date went for the generous helping of Farmhouse Italian Cheese (£6.95) with chutney and crisp breads. Having a sweet tooth, I ordered Zeligs Mess (£5.50), a sweet chaotic medley of meringue, cream and strawberries, a feast on the eyes and the perfect way to end a meal. Whether you want a drink after work or on a night out, a romantic meal for two or a large party Zeligs can cater for everything you could ever want. I thoroughly loved my time at Zeligs, and with live music most Fridays and Saturdays I will be making another visit very soon.
Think summer, think BBQ! Whilst we may not be able to guarantee sunny days, we can point you in the right direction when choosing your wine to accompany the burnt sausages and charcoaled chicken. Barbeques are a quintessentially British summer pastime, and whilst beer may be on the menu for many, it’s nice to up the steaks (geddit?) and serve a smashing vino or three instead. Summer wine is different from the wines we tend
to drink in winter. In the heat of summer we are less critical, but we do expect a few things – we want wine that is light, refreshing and thirst quenching. A great wine with ribs and thick steaks is Baco Noir. A woody, spicy red with a long finish this wine is full of complex flavours perfect for a rich BBQ dish like ribs. If white wine is more your thing and you’re grilling up fresh seafood and serving salads, then try a Chablis. A Chardonnay
go by, and sipped on a half carafe of very good, very reasonable house wine (£5.00). WithTosostart many to I optedinternational for the bruschetta dining marinara –experiences marinated mackerel and salad on ciabatta toasts – (£3.95) which was zingy and enjoy inlight. Liverpool we feel that the city centre has long The mackerel was so fresh and delicate – it just melted in been lacking which pays and homage to good my mouth, an and eatery the ripe cherry tomatoes salad brought the dish together. My husband went for frittura di gamberi e calamari quality(that’s hearty English dishes. Our menu is a celebracalamari and king prawns in light batter with salad – £5.95 is also a main option). They looked crispy, tion ofwhich traditional English comfort food with everyjuicy and fresh and got a big thumbs up. thingOurhandmade thetime premises from excellent mains followedon in good – a steaming bowlquality, of mussels for him (one of Goliath locally sourced ingredients. proportions for only £10.95) with a choice of three sauces. Adam settled for a rich onion, white wine, cream and parsley sauce and came Informal and welcoming, The Orchard places strong with a pot of delicious hand cut chips. I had one emphasis onfishthe enjoyment of oflife’s simple pleasures of four of the day - large fillets fragrant red mullet, simply grilled and seasoned (prices excellent yet honest food, drink and live entertainvary). It was surprisingly filling and very tasty – not too much cheese or dressing and the fresh bitter crunch of the chicory complemented the creaminess. Adam plumped for a crayfish cocktail (£5.95) that came with brown bread and a horseradish salad with marie-rose sauce which he said hit the spot. My main course of roasted butternut squash (£10.95) was a sight to behold – a towering sculpture of squash, tortillas, salad and garlic dressing. It was almost a shame to dive in, but it was worth it – the soft earthy squash married well with the garlic and creamy dressing and the texture and bite of the tortilla was an added dimension. Cecil Beaton, one of the most famous photographers of the twentieth century, captured the glamour and excitement of some of the world’s greatest celebrities. Now an exhibition of his work – Cecil Beaton: Portraits – will be on show at the Walker Art Gallery 26 June – 31 August to commemorate the stunning work of the artist, writer, actor, illustrator, diarist and caricaturist. Beaton photographed a dazzling array of superstars and personalities from the Queen and Winston Churchill to Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. The photographer was a character himself who was known to charm and cajole, amuse and flirt and electrify and calm his subjects. His career spanned a great era of change from the Roaring Twenties to the dawn of the New Romantics. Jessica Feather, curator at Walker Art Gallery, said: “Cecil Beaton had a remarkable gift of bringing out the personalities and flair of his sitters so that he created some of the great iconic images of the age.” For more information visit www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk Audrey Hepburn

Colour Makeover This issue our interior design team look at the importance of planning that all important home makeover. Whether itÊs the downstairs loo or an entire property revamp, it pays to be organised and confident with your plans. Decorating a room can have a massive impact for little relative cost, and the sense of achievement is next to nothing. Read on for top advice from our expert, Jan Blanchard...
A
s the months go by and we are in the heart and heat of summer, it is hard to think about the interior of your home – but this is the time to lie on the beach thinking about coming home and setting to, getting things ready before Christmas (I know, I know but it pays to be prepared!) is upon us and we have to do things in a flap, often missing bargains and receive poor service because everyone is rushed off their feet. At this time of year all the interior shops and websites are full of bargains. Just choosing one expensive part of your scheme while it is much cheaper is always a good move – when you’ve chosen furniture, for example, you can ask the supplier for a sample to start to choose accessories, paint and wall covering colours that you want to use. Then of course the items which always bring the scheme together: curtains, blinds and cushions, followed by the pictures and the personal decorative items. This is what makes a room yours and not as though it fell out of the pages of a decorating magazine. As nice as these schemes are, there are many things that have to be taken into consideration in a home – there is very often more than one person's taste plus the bits and pieces you have brought from other homes that have sentimental value – if you don’t plan these things at the beginning of the scheme then things could go horribly wrong and lead to bitter disappointment and expensive
mistakes that invariably we want to blame on someone else. So plan now, write everything down. ‘Fail to plan, plan to fail’ is the motto of interior design! Enjoy the planning, measuring and choosing – with all the preparation information to hand, you are decorating your home not someone else’s after all. We can look to others for inspiration but the things we want are our choices and true interior design is a reflection of your personality.

"This season's colours can be as bright and vivid as you dare! If you're unsure then make sure you test the paint on the wall you'll use, and remember you can always opt for a feature wall. This still makes an impact but is less of a transformation. Think deep cerise, burnt orange and citrus hues, go wild!"

Clutter is miserable! Clear your desk, clear your space and clear your mind – you’ll find that you feel in control and ready to face the day ahead, focused and alert.
E
ver walked into an office where there is ‘stuff’ everywhere? I have. It was a disaster. Every bit of worktop, desk, floor and windowsill was stacked up with boxes and papers like some kind of filofax mountain. I asked for some information. The poor girl had to move boxes and papers just for me to sit on a chair and still couldn’t find what she was looking for. The trouble is that it’s so easy to collect clutter. Clutter affects your mood and temperament, which will have a knock on effect on everyone around you. It very much affects your concentration and ability to function well. Clutter nags away at you, you feel pressured that you have so many things waiting to be done. You keep being reminded through your peripheral vision, i.e. you are not conscious of seeing it, but the message is sent to your brain via the edge of your field of vision. Remember Derren Brown? He gets people
to do things based on pictures left where they will pass during the day. They are not conscious of seeing them but are definitely affected by these things they see subliminally. Have you ever thought ‘right I have a list of jobs to do’ – but you can’t help flitting from one task to another
“
Clutter affects your mood and temperament, which will have a knock on effect on everyone around you. and not really getting anywhere with any of them? When you are focused on doing a task, an interruption doesn’t only stop you working while you address the subject of the interruption. No, you need to add up another ten minutes to get your level of concentration and focus back to where it was before.

Thankfully help is at hand, and there are several things you can do right now to declutter and regain control: 1. Clear your desk (put things into a pile to go through later – you can store them in boxes or drawers for now) 2. Only have the current job you are working on in front of you 3. Put the phone on divert or ask someone to man it for you until you have completed the task (or the amount of time you allocated for it) 4. Set yourself some time parameters, writing a timetable for your day for example. 5. During these slots, if urgent deal with it straight away, delegate if possible, or call the person concerned and ask for a few hours ‘as you are doing something that can’t wait’. 6. Any mail or emails that you need to act upon later in the day, put in a box marked as such, then put it out of sight until you have finished your chosen task. 7. Mark up your crates for different subjects i.e. accounts, sales info, stats etc and anything you want to keep for reference. 8. Anything you don’t think you will need – Bin it! (It starts to feel great I tell you!) 9. Take the original pile you took off your desk and sort as 5-8. Happy sorting! 35
GATEWAY TO THE CITY Our year as the official culture capital of Europe may now be behind us, but that hasnÊt slowed down LiverpoolÊs plans for regeneration. Our focus this issue is the transformation of the Lime Street Gateway; a multimillion pound project that will give the wider Lime Street area a facelift of epic proportions. Lime Street station has long been due an overhaul and in July 2008 that overhaul finally came to fruition. Designed by award winning practice, Glenn Howells Architects, the new gateway to the city will embrace a true Liverpool of the 21st century, banishing the collective eyesores of Concourse House and the dated row of shops that have obscured the station since the 1960s. Working together to deliver the project are Liverpool Vision, the city’s economic development company, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA, formerly English Partnerships), Liverpool City Council, Network Rail and Merseytravel. Funding for the £35 million development has been met through investors ERDF, English Partnerships and Northwest Regional Development Agency and the Railways Heritage Trust. Liverpool city council leader, Warren Bradley, said: “When the people of Liverpool put Concourse House at the top of a ‘Blot on the Landscape’ poll, they sent a clear message that they wanted to be proud of this part of the city.” The new design will uncover an entrance and welcome to the city that is deserving of Liverpool’s rapidly-rising star status. The use of gentle slopes and steps will address the difference in levels from the station concourse to Lime Street itself, and will help create a more pedestrian link to the city centre. The finished project will see the addition of an area of lime trees and feature lighting to highlight the magnificent new entrance. The project, due for completion in early 2010, has encountered several challenges along the way. Despite working in an area of heavy footfall however, demolition has been carried out without any major disruption or inconvenience to rail and road users or neighbouring retail outlets and restaurants. Eliot Lewis-Ward, the Homes and Communities Agency’s area director, said: “This has been a hugely complex programme and we would like to thank users of the station and the local business
community for their patience and also for their continued support for the project. “We are also delighted that the demolition aspect of the project has received industry recognition for its good working practices.” “Our focus has always been firmly on opening up the front of the station, complementing St George’s plateau and transforming the landscape of this part of the city. We are confident that the outcome is going to be a major improvement for the city.” The new gateway to the city will include a series of etchings, created by the renowned artist Simon Faithfull, and will be incorporated into the glazing of the station arches and in the surrounding paving. Eager to create a seamless transition from the modern design of the gateway to the World Heritage site it is

The removal of the retail parade will unveil the colonnaded stone gable-end of the main station shed, which until now has been hidden from view. The plans will result in a development that creates increased access to the station and provide a stunning entrance to our flagship station. Chief executive of Liverpool Vision, Jim Gill, expressed: “The scheme is another important milestone in the transformation of Liverpool city centre, and will act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the wider Lime Street area. This has been a real partnership effort and we are now on track to deliver a scheme of which the city can be proud of for many years to come.”

Paying a high price WeÊre victims of our own successes here in Blighty. We strive to achieve top marks in all aspects of our lives; long hours at work, keeping a happy home and being a respected member of the family and community, to name but a few. All this good work can leave us frazzled, stressed and inactive. Taking time for out for you should be as big a priority as all other factors in our lives, says Joanne Willcox, our resident health guru...
M
y mother shakes her head and rolls her eyes – “Spreading yourself too thin Joanne” and I know she’s right. (Certain) high achieving women are imploded with demands, both external and internal, and lack skills to filter them. These women complain that the first thing they sacrifice is their private time or private pleasures. Those of us who don’t spend regular time alone to rest and recoup are likely to suffer from what psychologists call “privacy deprivation syndrome”. Symptoms include: - increasing resentment, mood swings, chronic fatigue and depression. Sound familiar, sound grim? It is! Sufferers struggle through their day in a vacuum of unfulfilled exasperation... Only to drop into bed too emotionally depleted to sleep well at night. The smallest thing can set them off - bringing tears and tantrums – and not only from the children in the family. Soon work and personal relationships begin to suffer. Why? Because the never-refreshed are really not that much fun to be around. The cycle may continue unabated until physical illness sets in….. Remember the flu flux you had last year for five weeks? The two weeks you were laid up with lower back pain last summer? The sinus infection you couldn’t shake
off last month? We don’t have to make ourselves sick before we can call a psychic time out! Unfortunately, for many women it is only when we do get sick that we allow ourselves dispensation for time and space alone. This may be how life is for you right now but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Starting in September I am offering a Joanne Willcox Alternative three day package at my Crabwall Manor Hotel & Spa in Chester. Olde world rooms, fluffy white dressing gowns and five star treatment for those in need of serious R&R. A three day detox juicing programme (juice only), three cleansing colonic treatments, yoga, beauty treatments, pilates, walking, swimming, massage, solitude and well-deserved ‘Me Time’ will top up those low batteries and have you feeling ready and raring to go in no time! If you find yourself secretly looking forward to regular rendezvous with a hot water bottle and a Nytol - then privacy deprivation syndrome is exacting a high price.
Yoga helps to lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

PLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE BEE reared in Slovakia. The UK is also now home to the world’s first bumblebee sanctuary in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. The beautiful meadow stretches over 20 acres and is full to the brim with perfect pollens and flowers that attract and nurture the loveable insects. Sir David Attenborough is an avid supporter of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and says: “Bumblebees are key factors in our wildlife. If they disappear many of our plants will not bear fruit.” So – what can we do to help? Supporting local bee farmers by buying local honey and bee products is a good place to start. On a smaller scale, you can start straightaway by ensuring your garden is full to the brim with goodies to keep our bees happy – there are many to choose from but a few recognisable plants are: honeysuckle, cornflower, lavender, sunflower and various herbs. Bees also love apple, cherry and almond blossoms. Garden centres and DIY stores now cater on a large scale for wildlife conservation products, and insects are no exception. You can find carefully crafted homes for bees for around ten pounds – these are a great addition to a garden because some solitary bees are not capable of making nesting holes, and will potentially lay fewer eggs if they can’t find adequate housing – having solitary bees around will help your garden grow too! The health benefits of honey have been widely noted – it is nature’s energy booster, curer of dreaded hangovers, has huge antibacterial qualities, boosts immune systems and naturally sweetens foods. Beeswax is used in cleaning products, motoring and in countless high-end and everyday cosmetics. So this summer, if you hear the gentle buzz of a docile bumble, or see the tireless honeybee working away, savour the moment and do your bit to help the gardener’s friend. If you’d like to become a member of the Liverpool branch of the Lancs and NW Beekeepers Association, call 01744 21614. For further information on honey and bumble bees visit www. bumblebeeconservationtrust.co.uk and www.britishbee.org.uk
Ah – the quintessential English summer – orchards heavy with blossom, the heady fragrance of a thousand blooms bursting into colour and life, the dip and twist of swallows and swifts in a cloudless sky and the barely audible hum of the bumble and honey bees collecting the precious pollen...
P
aints a pretty picture doesn't it? However scientists, entomologists, nature enthusiasts and beekeepers alike are united in their concern for the future of our bees. Over the past year or so their plight has caught the attention of the press and the full extent of the decline of the UK’s bee population has been uncovered. Several factors are taking the blame for the notable decline in recent years – 30 per cent of honey bee colonies alone dropped last year, compared to just six per cent in 2003 – and these range from erratic weather patterns, the spread of the Varroa mite that infects the insects and the CCD; Colony Collapse Disorder that has affected colonies and species worldwide. There are over 250 species of bee in the UK, and only a small amount of those make up the worker honey bees and the bumbles. We were home to 27 species of bumble bee, however three of these are now extinct with many more under threat. Bees are essential for the pollination of a very large proportion of the UK’s produce – any fruiting plant requires bees to pollinate the flowers. Without the resulting fruits, bird populations would suffer and UK produce such as the British apple industry would be devastated. Rob Myron, chairman of the Liverpool branch of the Lancashire and NW Bee Keepers Association, explains: “If research is to be believed, bees are worth billions of pounds in pollination per year. Bumblebees will live in small or large colonies, depending on the species, either in dozens or hundreds. Honey bees, however, live in the thousands. Just one Bees pollinate one hive can hold 60-80 thousand bees at any in three mouthfuls of one time. what we eat, so they “Local support is always welcomed are vital to everyone. – we’ve been in the business for over twenty years; just recently over the past two years we have experienced an influx in requests for advice on how to keep bees. Several allotments in Liverpool have been approved to house hives and there has certainly been a rise in urban beekeeping.” The fluffy – if somewhat scatty – bumblebee is just as important to the agriculture of the UK. Growers of beans, oilseed rape and fruit rely heavily on the bumblebee. In recent years farmers have been forced to import captive-bred species, usually southernEuropean,

EXPLORE PARADISE
A holiday in the Caribbean doesn’t have to mean pina coladas and hammocks either (though frankly, that would be heaven), if you are of the sporty kind then don your snorkel and flippers and explore the many beautiful reefs or dives available. Water sports are an obvious pull to the sporty holidaymaker, and the islands offer countless opportunities for explorers. There are many nature reserves, excursions to uninhabited islands and local markets brimming with cultural goodies; foodies will have a ball sampling the freshest fish and sweetest fruits from restaurants around the region, for example. This is holidaying at its most sumptuous, indulgent and idyllic. Treat yourself to an experience that will leave the images of palm-fringed beaches and luxurious lounging imprinted on your memory forever.

GREAT SCOTT! The towering behemoth that surveys the city of Liverpool is both a mix of dark gothic grief and a place of awesome spectacle. That such an imposing giant is also a safe haven of solace and peace is not an accidental contrast, and many thousands of visitors flock regularly to experience exactly that. Jenny Morris delves into the rich history of the Anglican Cathedral and discovers how it remains an icon to the Liverpool of 2009.

une 1901 saw the birth of an idea that was to create one of the most striking pieces of architecture in the world. A meeting in Liverpool town hall resulted in the decision to build a cathedral that was worthy for the prosperous and thriving city, and a search soon began for an architect and a design. The designer was soon found – a Giles Gilbert Scott, a Catholic man who came from a family of noted architects – who became the architect along with George Bodley, both working to Scott’s complex and detailed design. In 1904 the first foundation stone was laid by King Edward VII at an open air service – this was to be the first of many royal visits the Cathedral would welcome over the century, and saw a choir of a thousand voices raise the song Hallelujah Chorus of Handel’s Messiah to the skies. Jenny Moran, visitor services manager at the Anglican, explains that the cathedral is such an icon to the city because “wherever you travel on Merseyside, the cathedral is a ‘visible witness for God in the midst of a great city’ and reflects the mood of celebration and grief.” In 1907 the sudden death of co-architect George Bodley enabled Scott to carry on single-handedly and his first task was to completely redesign the Lady Chapel. His perfectionism was a permanent trait and in
in 1984. “There are a few very special places in the cathedral. I suppose my favourite is the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, a truly unique space offering a sense of peace.” Over the years the cathedral has played host to a plethora of local and national high-profile events. In 2004 the cathedral celebrated its centenary to great applause, Her Majesty the Queen hosted her Royal Maundy there and gave her Maundy money to the congregation. Similarly the cathedral has seen some very sad moments – the funerals of Rhys Jones and Anthony Walker drew great public sadness and support for example, uniting all Liverpudlians as one, in mourning. Liverpool Cathedral is undoubtedly a place of beauty and awe. In the gloom of a thunderous February morning it glowers at you from the swirling sky, yet against the
backdrop of a dusky July evening the height of the Cathedral catches the last of the 1910 he went as far as to scrap the original plans and redesign day’s sunny glow, illuminated and full of warmth. the cathedral – this time with one tower instead of the planned “It is the largest cathedral in Britain and the largest Anglican double-tower structure. cathedral in the UK and Europe” says Jenny; “We drew people In his lifetime Scott designed many churches – both Catholic from 122 countries in 2008, welcomed over 500,000 people and Church of England – as well as many familiar British and remained open for 365 days...Liverpool Cathedral was the structures we still know and love today. Exams seem like a distant memory for the many thousands of students who studied hard this year. Well, they seem distant until the dreaded results day looms – it can be tough making such big decisions about your future. So how do you support those going through the transition to higher education or work? Our resident student and contributor, Toni Naylor, gives her view on what options are available for the young adults of today...
R
eceiving results is always a nervous time for anyone studying for some kind of qualification, whether it be GCSE’s, A-Levels, or a degree. Receiving that particular letter in the post or attending a meeting to pick up your results is always a “duh duh DUHHH!!” moment. But strangely enough, this is one of the easier parts of the education process. The most daunting aspect is what to do with them or where to go once you’ve received the results, as there are so many options to consider. If you are receiving results you should’ve begun the process at the beginning of this year! If not, and it is GCSE results you are receiving, consider going to a sixth form or college, it can only help you long-term and there are plenty or courses; academic or vocational. But higher education isn’t necessarily for everyone. Many students are now studying for a Diploma instead, which is the equivalent of between five GCSE’s and three and a half A Levels, so is well worth looking into. For those who decide to opt out of further education, I have referenced a nice little book to help you write that winning CV and take those first steps up the career ladder. Personally, my path through to university was mapped out for me since high school, and so it seemed natural for me to go to college. But the way forward isn’t always so easily planned or clear to see, so please bear in mind when considering your options that help is always at hand; Connexions offices, careers advice tutors and personal tutors will always guide you in the right direction, and if all else fails, www.direct.gov.uk has plenty of tips and advice to help you on your way.
For those of you awaiting or receiving A-Level results, don’t panic. If you don’t make the results you had hoped for, all is not lost. Most universities will accept you even without the required results and failing this, clearing has plenty of spaces on courses just like the one you had applied for (you may even prefer it!). If you are required to attend interviews for the course, please bear in mind that the competition for universities is high, so when prepping please consider my three P’s: Present yourself well - be neat and organised. Positive – pick out the positives about yourself and your work and try to steer away from any negative aspects. Perfect is something none of us will ever be, so don’t try to be! Be yourself! The jump between college and university might seem daunting, but fear not, over 2.3 million students were enrolled in higher education in 2007, so you are not alone. Make sure you have considered the course you want to study (try out the Stamford Test on UCAS’s website), the location of the university (or higher education institution), where you will live and financing all of the above. With these covered you will be fine. Good luck for your results and remember, you are not alone, help is always at hand. Top reads for leavers: McGuinty, J. & Fish, J. ... ...on a Summer Holiday!
S

ummer holidays are well underway and whilst the kids are revelling in all that spare time, parents often spend the six weeks tearing their hair out, trying to think of ways to occupy (and tire out) their bundles of joy. Help is at hand – Merseytravel have come up with a great new series of pamphlets detailing the many walk and cycle routes across Merseyside, all reachable by public transport, that will provide families with endless hours of activity – hooray! The summer holidays are the perfect time for families to start picking up good habits – regular family outings and activities not only get everyone moving, they are also great for family relations. There are so many things to do and see within Merseyside, and now is the ideal time to start exploring our local area. From red squirrel reserves and gorgeous sandy beaches, to spooky forests and ancient ruins, Merseyside has so much to offer and teach families of all ages – and that includes mum and dad! The new ‘Walk and Cycle About’ leaflets offer a variety of options and cover four areas; Wirral Peninsula, Sefton’s natural coast, Heart of the Estuary and Liverpool city waterfront. We all know that exercise is good for us, and cycling and walking are two of the easiest options available to families. Cardiovascular exercise improves general health and helps to lower both blood pressure and the resting heart rate, improves fitness, saves money, produces no pollution and (especially for parents) helps with weight and stress management. One of LLM’s favourite routes can be seen here, but with so many to choose from it’s worth taking a look for yourself. Pamphlets can be found at all Merseytravel/ Merseyrail outlets across Merseyside.
Walk 3 — Thurstaston Common Taken from Merseytravel’s Wirral Peninsula pamphlet.
From the Farmer’s Arms take the drive into Royden Park. Keep left of the Ranger’s Office to find the miniature railway. Roodee Mere is on your left. Keep left at the sign for Irby Hill. Beyond the elevated railway go ahead into Thurstaston Woods, picking up the line of a wall on your left. Turn right just before the plank bridge and keep Greasby Brook on your left. At the bench, bear right. Follow the path by the edge of the woods. Keep the wire fencing to your right. Fork right at the end of the fence and follow the path until it joins a surfaced track. Where the electricity wires cross the gravel lane take the narrow path directly beneath them to find a kissing gate at a road corner. Take the steps opposite and climb to the top of Thurstaston Hill. From here there are magnificent views across the Dee to Wales and north to the Lake District’s mountains. Take the bedrock path to the right of the plinth and behind the benches. Just a few paces past an obvious high step-down on this path, fork right along a path through the trees to reach Thor’s Stone. Turn sharp left here and past a pond to reach another outcrop. Go straight across this and further to reach a stone pillar and sleeper bridge. Keep ahead on the main path, past an occasional boundary stone to a gap in a wall. Head for the imposing half-timbered Hill Bark Hotel. Follow the path in front of it, winding through the rhododendrons to a woodlandedge carriage road. Turn right to the car park near the Ranger’s office and then left to return to the Farmer’s Arms. Start and finish: Bus stops by the Farmers Arms, Frankby. Walking time: 2 hours. Distance: 3.5 miles/ 5.5 km For information on all bus, train, ferries and tunnels in Merseyside, please call Traveline on 0871 200 2233. 51

There are so many varieties out there, we only see the tip of the herby iceberg at the local supermarket – here we bring you top tips to get your herbs flourishing in no time...
H
erbs can be grown from seed, cuttings or plants and they vary in maintenance. Buying plants will obviously give you a head start and means you can plant directly outside instead of using propagators and seed trays indoors. Make sure you buy from a good garden centre though and bypass the supermarket – this is because they are sold for instant use in the kitchen and therefore won’t last much longer than a week or two. If you would like to grow your herbs from plants then try rosemary, thyme, sage, tarragon and bay; they all grow well from plants and are easy to maintain. Growing from seed has several benefits – it’s economical and also gives a sense of satisfaction for the gardener, who nurtures the plant from seed, to seedling, to plant – then to dinner! You’ll find that you’ll get plenty of stock from just one packet of seeds, but you will have to ensure the soil moisture is at the right level which is more labour intensive than planting. During the early spring months seeds should be sown indoors in seed trays or small pots – a greenhouse or windowsill will do. When the seedlings are large enough to handle,
RECIPE: TOMATO & HERB OMELETTE
they can be thinned and transferred to larger containers. When there’s no threat of frost in the early summer (end of May – mid June), seedlings can be moved or seeds sown outside. Rocket, coriander, parsley and chives grow particularly well from seed. Most herbs will grow well in window boxes as well as containers: sage, rosemary and lavender are well suited but you’ll find that chives, parsley, thyme, basil and coriander also work well. Some herbs – such as sage, mint and chives – are best suited to a hot, sunny spot on the windowsill or in the garden but not all herbs need such conditions. Parsley, chervil and coriander, for example, prefer partial shade. GROWING TIPS: Always plant in good quality multi-purpose compost – the built in food will keep your herbs happy for about six weeks. An occasional feed could enhance your plants during the growing season (April to June). Less robust herbs – such as basil – can benefit from the extra nourishment of additional feeds. All you need to do is put slow-release fertiliser granules in the soil or mix a liquid feed in the watering can
Ingredients 3 free range eggs Large bunch of fresh herbs (such as basil, parsley, chives, mint, thyme) 8-10 cherry tomatoes Salt and pepper 1 tbsp olive oil 1 small red onion 50g feta cheese (optional)
every so often. Different herbs will grow well together, but the general rule is to keep herbs of the same family together. For example, the Mediterranean herbs; rosemary, thyme, marjoram and sage. Confine mint to its own pot or sink a large container into your herb garden to stop the roots spreading. Lemon balm and borage tend to spread too, so keep an eye on them. Try and pick the leaves from plants on a regular basis – this encourages new growth and keeps the plants healthy and growing in a pleasant shape. Did you know... you can also dry or freeze herbs for use in the winter months? Dry them for five or six days in a warm place away from direct sunlight. To freeze, wrap small quantities in parcels of clingfilm, freezer bags or ice cube trays topped up with water. These are really useful when wanting to add a punch of fresh herb flavour to winter stews and cooking. Would you like to appear as a gardening guest writer in The Liverpool Lifestyle Magazine? Method Heat the oil in a frying pan. Meanwhile, whisk the eggs and roughly chop the herbs. Halve the tomatoes and thinly slice the onion. Slowly cook the onions in the pan, when soft add the tomatoes and cook for a further two minutes. Pour the eggs into the pan over a medium heat
and sprinkle the herbs on top, shaking the pan to roughly mix in. Add salt and pepper to taste, and after a few minutes sprinkle the feta over the omelette (if using). Place the pan under the grill (remember your oven gloves!) to cook the top, or carefully flip the omelette over. Serve hot, alongside a green salad. 53

four wheeled fantasy S
o, you’ve won big time on the lottery, love cars and can now afford to indulge your every four wheeled fantasy. So, how’s that dream motoring playground shaping up? There’ll be a high speed bowl, for sure – somewhere to test performance cars to their absolute limits. Perhaps a demanding handling course, too, and don’t forget a tough off road track when you want to let off steam. And what about the cars! You can afford a pot pourri to delight any discerning petrol head including models like the new Audi R8 V10, a luxuriance of Bentley’s, high powered Evo’s and WRX’s, perhaps a new Focus RS, Jaguar’s latest XFR and XKR, Nissan’s new GTR – I think you’ve got my drift… So, is it all a figment of my imagination – or does such a place exist? Yes, actually - and I’ve been there, a privileged guest on an unforgettable day a month or so ago. Millbrook vehicle testing ground’s set in the beautiful Bedfordshire countryside; once a year motoring writers gather for the Society of Motor Manufacturers annual test day. Other drivers poached the usual suspects first, with a long waiting list for all three Nissan GTR’s and both Audi R8 V10’s so I had to ‘make do’ with a Bentley Continental GTC. And now I know why F. Scott Fitzgerald once observed: ‘The rich are different to you and me. They have more money’ - taking the wheel of a Bentley is a marvellous experience although in the cold light of day I have a feeling I am definitely not to the ‘manner’ born. How, for instance, does one drive a car like this – ‘to waft or not to waft’ was the important question; in the end I decided to try a mixture of both through the Bedfordshire countryside, booting it if anyone got too close, perhaps they wondered which mystery millionaire was scouting
out the area for a new pad. And although the Bentley was a great experience, half a dozen ‘real world’ cars impressed most on the day though, most of them are in reach of many of our readers. Taking the honours were Audi's S4 Avant Quattro S tronic and A5 cabrio 3.0 TDI Quattro S tronic, (the Leslie Phillips of smooth, unruffled cabriolets) followed closely by the Honda S2000, the new Jaguar XF S diesel, Porsche’s Cayman and the Lexus IS-F. For sheer exuberance, top prizes went to the Honda and Lexus, for refinement the Jaguar and A5 cabrio took a medal each
At 75 mph I was encouraged to take my hands off the steering wheel to experience the rock solid stability of the sports car and the A4 Avant was the one car I could easily live with. The Porsche, meanwhile, was in a different league... The Honda is now in its swansong with the last models being built this summer; Honda now has the tricky decision of deciding if they can ever replace it. With one of the world’s best engines, sublime handling, and an absolutely bullet-proof character it has ‘future classic’ written all over it. That could also apply to the Lexus IS-F which takes the Euro high performance game back to the Germans while the new XF diesel proves Jaguar’s not lost its ‘grace, space and pace’ touch. The Cayman’s party piece was somewhat disconcerting – at 75 mph I was encouraged to take my hands off the steering wheel to experience the rock solid stability of the sports car with its perfect weight distribution. As predicted, it stayed on the high speed bowl, a perfect demonstration of the engineering excellence that personifies the marque. Words by Townley Rogers

CHAMPAGNE SUPER (STELLA) NOVA THE TOWN OF BOOTLE IS UNDERGOING A TRANSFORMATION, AND AT THE TOP OF ITS LIST IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE STUNNING STELLA NOVA DEVELOPMENT, A GLEAMING NEW 14 STOREY BUILDING THAT IS PLACED AT A MAJOR GATEWAY TO THE TOWN BETWEEN WASHINGTON PARADE AND STRAND ROAD.
T
he idea for the striking new building first came about back in 2000 – Dreaming Spires had a vision that would vastly enhance the town of Bootle and continue its much needed regeneration. With a view to building a beautiful, iconic building which would become a prominent and familiar sight. Dreaming Spires were the outright winners of the Outstanding Contribution to the Regeneration of Bootle Award, presented at the Bootle All Together Better Awards. The development boasts 142 one and two-bedroom luxury apartments, currently showcasing a stunner of a show apartment – available for private viewing. Just minutes away from Liverpool city centre, Stella Nova offers residents the opportunity to live in high class apartments complete with exclusive features including a granite-designed lobby, roof top gardens, gymnasium, on-site parking and a resident concierge service – phew! The sumptuous apartments are part of Bootle town centre’s largest private investment for over 25 years, and the largest private residential investment in South Sefton to date. The cutting edge design has turned many heads and is the first of its kind in the area. The two-bedroom show apartment is indicative of the high quality design and finish that each apartment has in the new building. The open-plan design lends itself to the practicalities and requirements of a 21st century lifestyle, whilst retaining chic and elegant charm in its design. Jeremy Clark of Clark and Davidson Estate Agents, who will also act as managing agents, said: “The level of interest since we opened the show apartment has been incredible and has exceeded our expectations. The development offers tenants
something totally unique in the area. “Renting an apartment at Stella Nova is an attractive proposition for people who have a busy lifestyle and want amenities and leisure pursuits close by. There is the convenience of an adjacent railway station and bus station, a shopping centre directly opposite and a large new convenient supermarket, just yards from the apartments.” The development has 18,000 sq ft of ground floor commercial and retail space and offers businesses an exceptional high street presence. Stella Nova will accommodate a variety of commercial uses and are offering prospective tenants serious incentives and flexible terms are also on offer. Stunning views can be had from most apartments and particularly from a magnificent roof top garden. Residents can benefit from a sought-after communal gym facility too – think of the pricey gym fees you’ll save on! Dreaming Spires, with its main contractors Ocon Construction, have worked consistently to the Charter set by Build Sefton and sourced local people to work on the project. The company has also included a Biomass boiler in the building – a sustainable, progressive and carbon neutral boiler, and has been installed to heat the commercial units and central tower; another first for Sefton. Stella Nova has acted as a major catalyst and focal point for Bootle’s continuing regeneration and will no doubt experience much success. To view the show apartment please call Jeremy Clark at Clark and Davidson estate agents on 0151 944 1807. Enquiries for commercial premises should be made to Graham Bowling at Fitton Estates on 01704 500 345. Words by Michael Dougal

Testimonial:
I am pleased to say that I purchased my first overseas investment through Greer (Genesis Investments) two years ago on a development on the Caribbean island of St.Vincent. The purchase price was £110,000 and the apartment is now currently valued at £165,000. That’s more than 50% capital growth and the site hasn’t even completed as yet! I have been so pleased with the investment that I have purchased again through Greer on the Brazil project with the same developer.... Greer has an exceptional eye for property investments and I find her to be a complete professional. I get weekly updates on my investments and news bulletins, along with site progress photo’s and information. Greer has also been available both day and night to discuss my expanding overseas portfolio. I can’t honestly recommend Genesis Investments highly enough. Marie Connolly, Birmingham, West Midlands.
