anelagh Street is home to an icon. Steeped in a history as colourful as its summer fashions, and with a reputation that has stood the test of time, Lewis’s department store is as iconic to Liverpudlians as the Liver Birds, Albert Dock or the two great cathedrals. Firmly established in the psyche of the city, the store started life as a small clothing shop for men before being transformed by retail visionary David Lewis 153 years ago. Yes, 153. Having seen off world wars, recessions and the addition of retail giants to the city, Lewis’s continues to stand firm, adhering to its tradition of excellent customer service and brands for all, whilst effortlessly moving with the times and attracting new legions of customers as it goes. Managing director, David Thompson, told The Liverpool Lifestyle Magazine: “Lewis’s is a huge name in the north west and you’ll find that we have customers who have been coming to us for decades. When the rail link closed at Central Station temporarily, we saw a loss of 40% footfall in the store. As soon as transport links were reinstated however, we saw that 40% return – often, shoppers will simply go elsewhere but our customers always return.” Lewis’s isn’t shy of the spotlight, either. In the past 12 months the store has fronted its own campaign to postpone disruptive United Utilies work around the Ranelagh Street entrance of the store, and also found itself on one of the nation’s most popular television shows – The Apprentice. Apprentice contestants were less than supportive of the store when they were unsuccessful with their pitch for the ‘Cat Playhouse’ product and proposed retail price, but Sir Alan’s sidekick, Nick Hewer leapt to the store’s defence condemning the contestants for their naivety. “We’ve actually had great fun creating an Apprenticethemed window at Lewis’s,” says David, “we are now selling the ‘Cat Playhouse’ alongside our £1 t-shirts and have a cat-o-meter charting the progress of sales!” Lewis’s will see more change in the coming year or so as part of the impressive Central Village residential and retail development, that will see a transformation in the layout of the store and spectacular renovation to the interior. David explains: “The plans for Central Village will transform the area – behind the store we have essentially dead space, and this side of the retail centre will have something that will be a viable

alternative to Liverpool ONE.” Central train station is one of the busiest on the Merseyrail network, and visitors to the city will eventually step out into a retail Utopia – part of which will house the updated Lewis’s store. The company’s ethos as a ‘friend to the people’ still remains, and Lewis’s is known for its interest in supporting local businesses and independent brands. The store has revamped its clothing, and the first floor has been transformed into the Fashion Floor – offering a huge variety of affordable labels, unique to the city. Aimed at an 18-35 year old demographic, the Fashion Floor has everything from chic London labels, gorgeous shoes and can’t-buy-elsewhere garments which are sure to be a hit with the fashion-conscious Liverpool crowd. “We have brands from the old Quiggins store,” says David “we also have a local dressmaker due to set up, who specialises in bespoke clothing as well as a variety of labels that you just won’t find elsewhere in the city. We’re very happy with the result and hope it will be a success.” It’s clear to see that Lewis’s is exactly what it sets out to be – a friend to the people of Liverpool – immersing itself in the culture and character of the city, understanding its clientele and successfully attracting more with its ability to retain traditional values, but embrace contemporary fashion and society. Get Set, Go!

Ladies, it’s time to don your trainers and pink tracksuits – Race For Life is back! The annual fundraising event, organised by charity Cancer Research UK, is one of the most popular in the country. The 5km courses can be strolled or sprinted, you can dress up in costumes with your friends or go solo – whatever you choose you’ll be contributing towards a very worthwhile cause. Liverpool is hosting three events in total, so there’s no excuse not to get training! The Southport Food and Drink Festival is hitting the town this May 14-17 and looks set to be the busiest yet. This year will be the third annual event and has the backing of many bars and restaurants in Southport itself. After the roaring success that was the Superlambanana trail, Liverpudlians are set to embrace an equally endearing trail of penguins across the city. The installations are part of the Winter Trail taking place over the Christmas period, and the giant penguins are expected to make their grand entrance in November to coincide with the Christmas light switch-on. This year is Liverpool’s Year of the Environment, and the penguins make a fitting symbol. Chosen because of its association with global warming and the melting polar icecaps, the penguins are sure to be a hit. We Just Can't Get Enough...

...of The Saturdays Wowzers. It’s been a while since five fab ladies burst onto the scene with such pizzazz – even the cherished Girls Aloud femme fatales have been around for seven years. The Saturdays are a group that, like it or not, are unabashedly as fizzy pop as it gets and their star just keeps ascending. The band is made up of five feisty ladies – Rochelle, Frankie, Una, Vanessa and Mollie – each as glam, gorgeous and fluttery as the next. 10

They made their debut in 2008 with their album Chasing Lights that has so far produced four top ten hits, including the official Comic Relief 2009 single, Just Can’t Get Enough and the hit, Issues. We had a chat with two of the girls, Una and Mollie, to find out more about the popstrels... Hi girls – are you looking forward to your return to Liverpool in June? Una: Oh yeah, we’ve been before when we supported Girls Aloud at the Echo Arena and had a great time so we’re really excited about our performance at the Liverpool Empire. We’ve been to Liverpool a good few times and love it. That’s good to hear! Your current single, Just Can’t Get Enough, was the official Comic Relief 2009 single. How did it feel to be asked to represent such a famous charity event?

On tour it’s going to be pretty much every song from the album – so if they’re a fan of Chasing Lights then they should like it! What has been your best Saturdays moment so far? Mollie: There have been so many! Maybe performing at the O2 with Girls Aloud, then we went back to the O2 to perform at the Jingle Bells Ball which was great. I have always dreamt of performing at the O2, I’ve seen Justin Timberlake and the Spice Girls there and always thought ‘Wow imagine if I ever get to perform there’ – and we did it! Would you agree with the statement that you’re a ‘fivewoman whirlwind’? Una: (laughs) That’s a nice way of putting it really – we just feel that we work really hard and love what we do and can’t wait to take over the world! If you had to cover any Beatles song – which would it be?

Una: We were just really proud of it – we sold quite a number so we made quite a lot of money for Comic Relief and felt really honoured to be asked. It was a privilege to be in the position to be able to make that money back, in such an early stage in our career. There were two Comic Relief singles and ours sold the most!

What do you feel about your comparisons with Girls Aloud?

Mollie: (laughs) I think the song ‘Hold Me Tight’, it’s not one of their better known songs but it reminds me of my boyfriend, who’s from Liverpool actually – so I’d go with that.

What does the future hold for The Saturdays – what can we expect from the band in the coming months? Mollie: I think we just want to do as much as we can. People always think that pop careers are always short-lived and we really want to make the most of it – go as many places as we can, you know, just world domination really! TV presenter, Julian Bennett has opened his model agency ‘John Alexander’, on Victoria Street, Liverpool; his name given to him before he was adopted (he only found his real family a few weeks ago). His client, Lipsy needed eight fantastic models and Julian knew Liverpool would provide the goods so he held an open casting at the swanky Malmaison, Liverpool. Sharon Simons, Business Development Manager at Malmaison said ‘Liverpool has so many stunning people its no wonder he found the models here’.

Bold street's most recent eatery celebrated its launch at the restaurant. Guests were treated to champagne, seafood and live entertainment from crooner, David Knopov. The Italian Club Fish, like its mother ship further down the street, The Italian Club (minus the pesce) is the brainchild of Rosaria Crolla and is heavily influenced by the family’s Scottish-Italian background.

Hillsborough 20 years on. A special memorial service was held at Anfield recently to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. Families of the victims and players past and present were part of the estimated 30,000 at the service which included a two-minute silence at 1506 BST - the time when the match was stopped. Liverpool's two cathedrals rang their bells 96 times as a mark of respect for the 96 people who lost their lives.

Gourmet around the globe Liverpool has evolved, nay – is still evolving – into a big old melting pot of scrumminess when it comes to the restaurant scene, successfully taking inspiration from all over the globe.

Malmaison Restaurant

Malmaison Liverpool is situated in the upmarket Princes Dock area; a striking Manhattan style building that sits comfortably between the Three Graces. Sitting in the plush, purple bar having a drink before we went through into the brasserie, I was able to fully appreciate the how lavish and grand the building and decor is. With the tasteful low lighting, dark colours and comfortable velvet couches, the secluded corners are effortlessly romantic. We were then greeted by Pavlos Shakas, the Malmaison's astute Head Sommelier, who talked us through his wine list, clearly compiled by an enthusiast who knows his vino well enough not to disappear into a world of gobbledegook when describing them. Leaving the wine choice for the evening in Pavlos's capable hands, he showed us the most spectacular wines to perfectly match each course. To start I ordered the salt and pepper squid with lime mayonnaise, (£5.75). Deliciously simple, lightly coated in seasoned flour and then fried to perfection. My date was also charmed by her starter: chicken liver parfait with toasted brioche and grape chutney (from the homegrown and local set menu). She described it as 'heaven', saying that "every mouthful was a melt in the mouth moment & the only bad point was that it had to come to an end". For my main I had ordered the 250g Entrecote; a naturally reared, grass fed and dry aged on the bone sirloin, served with garlic butter (£18.50). The stunning cut of steak came served on an inch-thick wooden chopping board. The star of the dish though was the slice of bone filled with marrow to spread over the steak. What a taste! It was an unusual, flavoursome delicacy that has to be tried to be believed. As a side I ordered the hand cut fries with vodka ketchup (£3.25) and the tomato and onion salad (£2.95). This dish really

takes some beating, it ticked every box for me; exciting, unusual and incredibly tasty. Feeling experimental herself, my other half ordered the lamb mixed grill; cutlet, sweetbread, liver and kidney (£14.95). Commenting that it was interesting to dine on the complementing textures of lamb, personally I'd recommend this dish to any adventurous meat lovers out there. For pudding we both opted for a selection from the staggeringly huge cheese trolley that we had seen on the way in. If you like cheese, this is the best cheese selection out there. Malmaison promotes its brasseries as stand-alone ventures, and now I know why - whether you are staying or not, that this is not just any hotel restaurant. The food was of the highest quality, the service was outstanding & all at a very reasonable price. We had a spectacular evening and the sommelier's wine choices were the icing on the cake. Dan Burns

Ahhh Rose...blushed and pink in hue, reminiscent of 1970’s ladies that lunch, and ever so passé darlings. That is, until a relatively recent revival that saw racquet-shaped bottles of Mateus Rose and the like fly off the shelves at an alarming rate. Not just for show, the spectrum of colour, strength, flavour and depth that a good bottle of the pink stuff holds is not to be sniffed at. Well chilled on a summer's day (or even on

a warm evening), roses make a surprisingly good food match. They are not wines to dwell over too long, but are best glugged gleefully. And they look so good in the glass, too: after all, aesthetics is an important but often underestimated part of the dining experience. The qualities to look for in a good rosé would be crispness and freshness (buy the most recent vintage), fruitiness, good balance (they need acidity to provide food compatibility, since they

The Oriental At Shorrocks Hill

Firm city dwellers, it takes a mighty tempting treat to lure the hubby and I further than the Birkenhead tunnel. But a treat we did indeed enjoy at the scrumptious Formby-based Oriental@ Shorrocks Hill. Its owner, Stephen Tso, is a restaurateur with notable experience in heading a wide variety of Chinese restaurants in and around Liverpool and rates The Oriental as his most exclusive venture yet. The restaurant is tucked away in Formby, and provides a warm, relaxing welcome from the outset. Whilst we perused the vast menu, hubby and I sipped on cold Tsingtao beers. The wine list was excellent but with a designated driver allocated only one beer, it seemed unfair to slosh down that tempting bottle of Sancerre... After much deliberation we decided on a sharing banquet for two (£22.50pp). There are several to choose from so we went for the middle of the road option, though it was anything but. Stephen prides himself on catering for every individual’s needs – tailoring menus around allergies or intolerances frequently, something that has earned the restaurant a loyal clientele. We snacked on crispy prawn crackers until our soups arrived – hot and sour for him, crab and sweetcorn for me. Both were delicious, my unctuous but delicately flavoured soup slipped down nicely, whilst the hot and sour brought a slight glow to the hubby’s cheeks. The ‘special emperors combination’ platter that arrived next on an enormous plate had, amongst other things, Phoenix Rolls, Won Tons and Satay Chicken with a spicy dipping sauce. We took our time, sensing we’d have to loosen the belts at the end of the evening... Our next course was a favourite – crispy duck pancakes, shredded in front of us and presented beautifully with a pink orchid garnish. Yum.

A rest was needed whilst we contemplated our main dishes – fried King prawns ‘Szechaun style’ and black pepper fillet of beef on a sizzling hot platter. These were served with Lo Hon Monk’s vegetables and Yeung Chow friend rice. The plates arrived with a flourish, the black pepper beef sending a plume of spicy steam to the ceiling when it hit the hot plate. Both dishes were superb but my favourite was the deep peppery hit of the beef – gorgeous. Wonderful setting, welcoming atmosphere and fantastic food – well worth a visit. The Monro on Duke Street has always been a favourite of mine – even before its lovely new refurb. So imagine how happy I was to learn I’d be reviewing its sister venture, The James Monro on Tithebarn Street. The James Monro is a New York style restaurant and bar – so I donned my best Carrie Bradshaw heels and skipped up town for dinner. The building has a traditional pub feel to it, but with light walls, classic fittings and high ceilings it exudes the elegance of a 19th century dining hall. The James Monro frequently holds themed evenings and has a

great selection of handpicked real ales, as well as a good wine list. Tummies were rumbling as we greedily scanned the menu. I finally opted for a starter of spicy crab and prawn fritters (£4.50) that came with a chilli and lime dipping sauce. The old man opted for Hudson rabbit with sweet tomato sauce on tagliatelle (£4.25). My fritter was juicy, thick and full of lots of lovely crab meat and whole prawns. It certainly had a kick to it, and was tempered by the sweet and tangy sauce. The other half loved his rabbit – juicy cuts in a tasty sauce and great value for money. On a health kick (of sorts) I opted for the Cajun catfish on spinach, Yukon potatoes and a caper and dill salsa (£11.95) for my main. Four succulent fillets topped the spinach and buttery spuds - the Cajun spices were fragrant and intoxicating. The salsa sliced through the spice with a zing – delicious. My man went for the New Yorker Bronx burger (£11.95) – a mix of beefburger, Vermont cheddar, Applewood bacon and hand-cut chips. I took his muffled silence and full mouth as a thumbs up. This was all washed down with a fruity Corte Vigna Pinot Grigio (£12.95). We finished the evening with a slice of pecan and bourbon pie and the cheese plate (both £4.95) – both scrumptious, both filling, and both frightfully calorific...diet starts again next week. Is it my imagination or are most people getting busier & busier?

e seem to constantly have more and more to do before we can relax and enjoy life. We need to ensure we set aside time for ourselves and for others. Sometimes it takes a shock such as an illness or even a loss, for us to stop, take stock and appreciate the good things in life. I’m sure our dying words (when we reach a ripe old age) won’t be ‘I wish I’d spent more time in the office’. Remember the old days when people had time for each other.... Now wasn’t that nice! A little politeness and charm goes a long, long way (and not just with the senior generation). Shouldn’t those little caring considerations to each other be what life is all about? I remember hearing about a guy who set up a website group. The group had to pledge that all the members would, on a particular day of each week, do something uncommonly and outrageously kind for no other reason or reward than to experience the feel good factor it gave! Wow, what a great idea. Some of the

ideas were giving away an umbrella in the rain, little gifts and handing out sweets on the train. Walking as meditation I will tell you what I learned myself. For me a long, five or six mile walk helps. And one must go alone and every day.

s long as I approached walking as exercise, I never made it past the front door. But one day, not so long ago, my parents were very ill and had been for many months, I was just getting over surgery and was nervously waiting for results and my dad rang me that morning in tears, worried about my mother and her illness... I felt at that very moment I was going to burst with grief and panic, so I bolted out of the house at lunch time as if I were leaving the scene of a crime. Filled with anxiety, painful memories, and my own unrealistic expectations from the past weeks of what the future held for me and the changes that were inevitable. The only safe place for me was the present moment; my foot against the pavement, the wind on my face, my breath entering and leaving my body. Forty minutes later I stopped, discovered to my amazement that I was on the other side of town, and headed back home, calm and centred. I have been walking ever since. Slowly I am learning what Henry David Thoreau knew: “It requires a direct dispensation from Heaven to be a walker.” But I still don’t walk for exercise. Instead, I walk regularly for my soul and my body just tags along. There are different reasons why people should walk - to increase the heart rate and build strength, to solve a creative problem, to finish that argument with yourself or someone else, to saunter and wake up to the world around you, and to meditate. I walk for all of them, but most days, I go on walks for a “moving meditation”. Fitness of the spirit. I try to quiet the voices in my head, take long strides, and concentrate on the slow, steady rhythm of my breath, comforted by the interior silence. Suddenly my reverie might be broken by the sound of birds

singing, a dog barking, or the sight of a pretty garden. Thoreau complained of walking sometimes “without getting there in spirit....The thought of some work will run in my head and I am not where my body is-I am out of my senses.” This happens to me as well, but I have learned to train myself to return my awareness slowly to the physical act of walking, for here in the present moment, one step at a time, I have found peace. If you have had difficulty sitting down to meditate, you might like to give walking meditation a chance, especially now that the beautiful weather has returned. Take into consideration your preferences-if you are not a morning person take a walk at midday, in the late afternoon, or after supper under the stars. Even if you work in a city during the day, you can break at lunch and take a walk. No-one needs to know that you’ve shut the world out and are meditating as you walk down the street. Twenty minutes to a half hour every day is a good amount of time to restore a sense of serenity. I have found there is a no wrong way to do walking meditation. Sometimes we expect to experience immediate transcendence and are disappointed when it seems as if nothing is happening. Let go of expectations and life will unfold, step by step. Step 1: Drink lots of cold water

Advantage Liam Broady The Liverpool Lifestyle Magazine was lucky enough to catch up with rising star, Liam Broady, for a chat prior to his appearance at the TraditionICAP Liverpool International Tennis Tournament.

iam, of Stockport, is set to be a big name in the tennis world if his track record is anything to go by. He’s already following in the footsteps of top tennis pro, Rafael Nadal, after becoming Britain’s first European Junior Masters champion in Italy last autumn. When we spoke to Liam – who will turn 15 before the tournament – he was training hard in France. It’s a tough life... Hi Liam, you’ve been described as one of Britain’s hottest prospects – how does that feel? (Laughs) Well, you just try to keep your feet on the ground. It’s really flattering, but there are some great players and I have a lot of competition.

What do you think the best thing is about playing tennis at your level? I love the competition – it’s great to compete at this level doing something I really enjoy. The travel aspect is great too, though I don’t get much time to relax around my training schedule! My training schedule varies depending on where I am, when I’m at school in the UK I’ll train in the evenings for a couple of hours and at weekends. When I’m here [France] it’s more intensive and I train every day.

I love the competition – it’s great to compete at this level doing something I really enjoy.

Modest as well... So what age did you start playing tennis? I was about four years old I think. I used to play football more, but then I suppose it became obvious that I was a bit better at, and preferred, tennis.

What’s your top ambition or dream – where do you see yourself in five years for example? I want to play in the French Open, that’s my ambition and I’m working hard to get there.

Are you looking forward to playing in Liverpool this June? When I played for the juniors last year it was fantastic – the weather was great and there was an awesome atmosphere. So yes, I can’t wait to get back there for the tournament this summer.

If you had the chance to play anyone, who would it be and why? It would have to be Nadal – he’s someone I look up to and he’s a fantastic player. My idol though, really, is Andre Agassi so if I had another chance, then I’d like to play him too.

Michael said: ''I have heard a lot about Liverpool over the years and all the good work they have done to develop tennis. l am very much looking forward to playing the event.'' Playing for Germany, Stitch won both the Davis Cup and the Hopman Cup in 1993 and in 1992 won the men's doubles titles at both Wimbledon (with John McEnroe) and the Barcelona Olympic Games (with Boris Becker). New talent to keep your eyes on include the fast rising American star, Mardy Fish, who has already won two tour titles this year, and Robin Soderling of Sweden. Both men are the top seeds in the men’s singles, in which the two-time Liverpool finalist Vince Spadea will also feature.

DOG TALES Here’s a heart-warming tale if there ever was one. Seven month-old Sophie, a gorgeous shaggy Old English Sheepdog (OES), had been deposited at a pound by her previous owner. She was seen to be overly aggressive towards both humans and other dogs and her future looked bleak until a chance meeting with the Fern family. The Ferns were already proud owners of 10 year-old fellow OES, Holly, and were on the look out for a spritely companion and addition to their family. When they visited Sophie, they were upset to learn that she was facing an uncertain future, and were advised against considering her. Meanwhile, a concerned member of staff from the Birkenhead-based pound contacted OES Welfare for help as at this point Sophie was showing so much aggression that people couldn’t get near her. It was at this juncture that BarkBusters’ Nikki Platt was contacted for expert advice. When Nicki arrived she took Sophie out of her small kennel and away from the deafening noise of the other

dogs. When alone, Nicki could see that Sophie was expressing clear fear aggression, and didn’t want to harm anyone, she was scared and wanted be left alone. The process of rehabilitation started under Nicki’s watchful eye and after only twenty four hours Sophie was playing happily and progressed quickly from there on in. Nicki explains: “Most aggressive episodes are triggered by the fear of being caught in a particular situation. Dogs aren’t born aggressive, they become aggressive for a myriad of reasons. They have a large variety of body language that they use to convey a “stay away” message. People frequently misinterpret this body language, approach the dog inappropriately and are bitten. The sad thing is that most episodes of aggression aren’t investigated and treated properly. Consequently, the reason for the aggression is usually buried with the dog.”

And the happiest news of all? Within a week Sophie was ready for rehousing and reunited with the Fern family who had kept in touch with Nicki over Sophie’s rehabilitation, and they are living happily ever after... Nicki wants to thank all involved in Sophies rehabilitation and hopes we all can learn a lesson about dogs fear being mistaken for aggression!

Seventy-five years ago, thousands of Liverpudlians flocked to catch a glimpse of King George V as he opened the engineering masterpiece that is the Queensway tunnel. It was on July 18 1934 that the King travelled north to unveil the Birkenhead tunnel, a like of which had never been seen. At 3240m (two miles) long, the tunnel was a record holder – the largest underwater tunnel in the world no less – and cost a total of £8m.

ast forward several decades and a new millennia, and once again thousands of Liverpudlians are expected to flock to the Queensway Tunnel. Twenty thousand, in fact. And not only are they expected to flock to the tunnel – they will be able to walk through it as part of the celebrations surrounding its 75th anniversary. The ‘Under and Over the Mersey’ event will take place on Sunday 19 July and is expected to sell out quickly. Over 20,000 people are expected to attend the walk-through, and organisers Merseytravel say it will be the last chance to do so ‘for years’. It is also hoped that the event will raise thousands for local charity, Claire House children’s hospice, Merseytravel’s corporate charity for 2009. All proceeds raised through ticket sales will be donated to Claire House and Councillor Mark Dowd, Chair of Merseytravel, visited the hospice to meet children and families who will benefit from the windfall. Councillor Dowd said: “Meeting the children of Claire House puts so much into perspective. They are such incredible children, with incredible families and great people looking after them. “Knowing that they will directly benefit from the proceeds of this event, particularly from donations made by all of those people taking part, is fantastic and we are delighted support them in any way we can.” Everyone taking part is being encouraged to support their own worthwhile charities if they would like to, whether in fancy dress or through their own sponsorship. Councillor Dowd added: “We want people to really enjoy the day and make it one to remember. The event will be something to tell your children and grandchildren about because it will not happen again for years.”

The tunnel, that links Liverpool to Wirral, will welcome celebrity personality Keith Chegwin to host the event and add his trademark sense of fun to proceedings. ‘Under and Over the Mersey’ will celebrate the occasion with a 1930s carnival atmosphere – traditional carnival rides, elegant vintage cars, musicians and circus performers to name a few. Walkers will enjoy a whole host of activities too – including a return ride on a ferry ‘cross the Mersey – who knew tunnels could be so much fun? Everyone taking part will also receive a medal to commemorate the day and celebrate their effort. Neil Scales, Chief Executive and Director General of Merseytravel, said: “This is the legacy of a special event held last year to celebrate European Capital of Culture. We’re making it even better this year and we hope that thousands of people will come along, take part, enjoy themselves and help raise some money for some truly fantastic causes that are close to their hearts. “This year we are planning something special to celebrate a milestone in the history of the tunnel; at its time, the largest underwater road tunnel in the world. Seventy-five years on it is still an amazing feat of engineering and we’ll be bringing some of that history back to life.” Single tickets are £5 and family tickets (2 adults and 2 children) are £15. Walks are timed at 10.30am, 11.15am, 12 noon, 12.45pm or 1.30pm and everyone taking part can choose the time that suits them best. When we go to school we instantly recognise the importance of learning English, science and even mathematics if we have to (I’ve never been a fan of division) but have you ever considered how important it is to learn a second, or even third language?

panish students learn Catalonian, the French also teach in English, and Germany has adopted a variety of neighbouring mother tongues. However the United Kingdom has always distinctly lacked a second language. With an abundance of languages to learn, including the trio of homegrown languages – Gaelic, Welsh and Irish, British schools have in the past limited themselves to teaching German, Spanish and French – but most schools only offer these courses as an option, rapidly reducing the number of bilingual school-leavers. Therefore should the responsibility fall to parents to encourage their children to learn a second language? Young minds are far more receptive, with a sponge-like ability to soak up and retain information. Hiring a language tutor, or enrolling family members in courses is an option, and costs do vary so don’t discount these choices immediately! Libraries offer comprehensive varieties of language books and CDs for the whole family to use, at their own pace, and could be a fun way to introduce language to young children. Learning a language can actually start at any age. Night classes are increasingly popular with older generations, who want to learn new skills and trades. Most colleges and universities in the UK run night classes in a wide variety of courses, catering for nearly all the subjects available to students who are still in education To speak Italian is seen as romantic, to speak Spanish is passionate and to speak French is suave. These three have

always been the most popular languages in UK schools but now a rise in overseas employment and foreign work has also brought Chinese, Polish and Japanese into the mix. Soon children of all ages, some as early as seven years-old, could be taking English in the morning, Chinese Modern Art after break time, followed by Catalonian Spanish then French History in the afternoon. Conversely, forgotten British languages are being resurrected in the education system. Such is the desire to broaden horizons in school and increase the linguistic capability of students across the nation, that Wales now has 20% of all schools in the country teaching entirely in the Welsh natural language. Gaelic and Irish are also facing a revival as some schools are launching lunchtime classes for students who want to discover lost cultural roots. Creating a higher IQ, more precise reasoning skills and a greater ability to deal with and understand complicated problems are just a few of the advantages to a bilingual person. Being able to speak a second or third language also opens the door to a wash of well paid career opportunities. Statistics show that a person is more likely to get a well paid job if they have a second or third language than someone who doesn’t. Imagine going on holiday and not having to fumble around for a small phrase book to ask where the nearest restaurant is. It would be fantastic, or should I say; sería fantastico! Nail biting, hair pulling and door slamming are all signs that your child is revising, or trying to revise, for those all important exams. Whether it is SATs, CATs, GCSEs or A-Levels, all exams need to be revised for – but revising can create massive amounts of stress –not just for the child but also for their family too. Despite the fact that there will always be some stress and tension when it comes down to revising, there are certain ways that you can go about helping your child which will ensure a more relaxed and stressfree revision period and happy home in general. Learning is always that bit more effective if it is an enjoyable and fun experience. Try to encourage your child to write notes and use colourful diagrams to remember things –the best sort of diagrams to use are ‘mind maps’ – imagine a tree with many branches. All of these branches carry vital relevant information and subsequently can be easily related back to the original topic. At the end of a subject or topic it's important for your child to summarise everything they have just learnt by creating a mind map or diagram of their choice. This will reassure them that all the information has gone in and will also act as a quick recap

Finally, to aid in the revision process help your child to draw up a friendly revision timetable. Also try not to let their social lives or their jobs interfere with studying – resting and sleeping will ensure that their brains remain active and ready for more learning.

Engineering solutions for problematic garden areas

would like to talk about a civil engineering product known as Geoweb which is a cell confinement system. The product currently on the market was developed during the Gulf War as a temporary road system in an area were the only road-building material to hand was sand.

Technique

The Geoweb units are collapsible, easy to carry and install. A geotextile membrane is laid out over the constructional area. The Geoweb units are then installed, layer after layer. Each layer of cells can be backfilled with an appropriate material depending upon its final use.

Applications Embankment construction

On very steep slopes the product can be installed in steps to enable footpaths, buildings and even steep planted areas to be constructed without the risk of surface erosion.

Stream crossings

Can be constructed on top of clay and gravel beds the cells are filled with concrete and brushed to produce an exposed aggregate surface.

Car parking with a lawn area

The cell confinement system is buried just below the lawn surface and clean angular stone is backfilled into the cells. The surface is top-soiled over and lawn

turf is laid to produce a lawn area capable of withstanding vehicle parking and movements. This is also good for lawn areas with high wear and heavy use.

Field entrances

Usually a very muddy area where access is concentrated. The installation of this system when backfilled with clean stone provides dry access.

Garden buildings

Can be installed onto previously unusable steeply sloping garden areas by using the system to produce a retaining wall without the need to resort to costly concrete or brick walls.

Stream bank protection

Can be installed in steps along the bank or laid on the slope itself, either backfilled with stone or with topsoil and marginal planting to stop your garden being washed away.

With some parts of the motor trade in dire straits, one local car scene’s bucking the recession as drivers get ‘hooked on classics’. Frank Davis reports.

he graunch of gears, whine of a duff starter motor and that nail biting time when the MOT’s due - welcome to the world of classic motoring … It’s like a parallel universe, a motoring twilight zone where the uncool is cool, trash treasured and the modern often given short shrift. Here, an old Marina is every bit as admired by given some as a sixties Maserati and anyone – with a bit of common sense – can discover the joys of cars which rely more on oily rags and spanners than an expensive mechanic in kid gloves. And while some classics are shined, buffed and polished within an inch of their lives, others are used in the real world, true ‘workaday’ cars that still raise a smile. I’m firmly in the latter camp, buying a Japanese classic as a surprise Christmas present for my wife that’s also used as her daily driver. Yes, it was an impulse buy, purchased after leaving a note under its windscreen; days before Christmas, its lady owner called from Formby and we agreed a very reasonable price for a 1993 Daihatsu Mira with full service history, dodgy exhaust and missing radio aerial. A classic? Well, there

are about 30 left in the UK and it’s a hoot to drive and still gets admiring glances from those ‘in the know’. That was one of my better buys - I’ve also been lumbered with a couple of Triumph Dolomites with either engine or bodywork ‘issues’ (owners of any eighties BL cars will know what I mean …) which proved disastrous wastes of money. Meanwhile, it was envious glances all round this Easter after clocking an H registered BMW 3 series convertible which looked like its hood had been subject to a vandal attack in the leafy ‘burbs of Childwall – turned out my brother in law had been offered it after casually mentioning he was approaching that time in his life when he had a little more money to spend and was looking to relive his youth (when he had a Morris Marina estate for goodness sake …) Said BMW was given him free by his boss, its cracked cracked plastic rear window testament to the fact its top had never been opened for a good few years. Like me, he’s a classic car virgin, so how can you buy a useable car without breaking the bank - or the marriage vows? Is it all about having pots of dosh, or can you realistically buy a car that’s rising in value to enjoy virtually ‘free’ motoring over the next few years? And don’t forget you'll be doing the environment a great favour – Gavin Green of ‘Car’ magazine once wisely observed that the greenest cars in the world are the ageing Mercedes taxicabs which are still doing sterling service in the near East forty or fifty years on…

This is my personal choice, so very subjective, but could point you in the right direction … For something more modern, consider cars like Ford’s pert StreetKa, various MG’s including the charismatic ZS 180, ZT V8 SE mark one, sporty TF Trophy or muscular RV8. I’ve always admired Peugeot’s 306 cabriolets, Fiat’s sharply styled 20V turbo coupe and assorted Alfa’s like the 155 and 164. YOUR SWAG When the weather warms up it’s amazing how complacent we can get with home security; open windows, loud radios and unlocked doors all amount to an easy target. We explore ways to keep burglars at bay that won’t make a dent in the bank balance.

kay – so let’s start with a few statistics. Over 35% of burglaries committed are crimes of opportunity, crimes that in theory, could be prevented. If your home lacks basic security then you may find yourself ten times more likely to be a target – and when we say basic, we mean basic. Just the addition of strong locks on doors and windows can increase security tenfold. Got your attention? Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, recently revealed plans to provide homeowners with discount vouchers for DIY chain, B&Q, so home security improvements are more financially accessible. Ms Smith explained: “I want us all to work together to stop those criminals who may think they can take advantage in tough times.” The Home Office has also released statistics that back up the opinion of a ‘credit crunch crimewave’ – the percentage of domestic break-ins rose by 4% to 69,000 between July and September 2008 as the country slipped into recession. A spokesperson for B&Q said: “Everyone should feel safe in their own home. This is not about scaremongering, it is about taking sensible precautions.” So – it’s time to equip yourself – we have some helpful hints that don’t require any outside work, huge cash withdrawals or increased stress. It seems obvious, but close those windows and lock those doors! Opportunists just love an open kitchen window. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “Many of the burglaries reported to the police in Sefton are via insecure doors and windows. “Always check your front and back doors are secure even if you are in. Police officers are working hard to identify those responsible for burglary. If you see or hear anything suspicious please contact the police.” Fit strong locks to all doors and windows, paying extra attention to the ground floor. If you think you would benefit from new

windows or doors then ensure that they are certified to British Standard BS7950 (windows) or PAS24-1 (door) and if possible opt for laminated glass on your windows as it’s harder to break. Install a chain and/or bar lock to your front and back doors, and if you don’t have one already then invest in a door viewer – this enables you to peer through a hole in the door to view your visitor before opening and is easy to install. Don’t hang a spare key anywhere near the letterbox, and if you leave the keys for family under the doormat or tiles then find somewhere else soon – canny burglars know all the usual places. Think about your current locks, too. When were they installed? Does the door rattle? If the lock seems unstable then it is essential that it is replaced as soon as possible. When looking for a local locksmith ensure that they are members of the Master Locksmiths’ Association. If you are lucky enough to be going away on holiday this year, make sure you can relax by the pool in the knowledge that your home is as secure as possible. Top tips to remember include; cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries, cut the lawn before you go, if possible ask a friend or neighbour to call in – ask them to collect post, draw curtains at night and open in the mornings and generally make the place look lived in, and be prepared to return the favour! Finally – alarms. If you have a visible burglar alarm it can put off even the most brazen thief. There are many alarm systems on the market to choose from, and they vary to suit every type of budget. There are smaller audible alarms that can be fitted easily yourself, or more elaborate systems that will require professional assistance and a bigger budget. Always remember to talk to your insurance company for its recommendations before you make a decision and look for the British Standard BS4737 or BS6799 certified models.
