LIVERPOOL LEADS THE WAY

The city of Liverpool is taking part in a huge promotion of recycling that will help spread the message across the world. As LLM went to press it was estimated that well over 1,000 people would turn up for the eco-themed civic service, hosted by Liverpool’s Lord Mayor and ex-Status Quo drummer, Jeff Rich. Lord Mayor, councillor Storey – who did his bit for the environment by travelling in his very own horse-drawn carriage to the event – said: “The theme of this year’s civic service is Celebrating Liverpool’s Year of the Environment – Our City Our Planet. “The year has brought together people of all ages and given them a chance to appreciate just how wonderful our city is and how we should preserve it for future generations by living in a sustainable way.” Council leader, Warren Bradley, said: “This service allows us to celebrate Liverpool’s many successes and gives us a chance to remember just how truly remarkable our great city is, and why promoting issues such as recycling and sustainability are essential for its future.” For more information please visit www.ourcityourplanet.co.uk

ECO-MAN ON ÂRUBBISHÊ WORLD TRIP

Inventive eco-adventurer, Andy Pag, is off on another incredibly ‘rubbish’ expedition around the globe. The 34-year old from London has already driven a chocolate powered lorry to Timbuktu using waste cocoa butter, and organised the Grease to Greece rally where teams had to scavenge chip-fat to power their vehicles across Europe. This time Andy has recycled a scrap yard school bus and turned it into a state of the art ecohome using a mix of reclaimed trash and cutting edge technology. Not only is the 20 year old ‘Biotruck’ made from rubbish, but it’s been modified so it can run on rubbish too – specifically used cooking oil thrown away by restaurants and caterers. Andy explains: “By 2050 the experts say we’ll each have to be emitting less than two tonnes of CO2 per year to avoid the worst effects of manmade climate change. I’m curious to see what people in other countries are doing about their footprint, and to see if it’s possible to travel around the world emitting less than two tonnes myself, by using energy-from-waste and other technology.” Running a private vehicle on waste vegetable oil or ‘home-brew’ biodiesel has been legal and tax free in the UK since June 2007. Watch this space for future news of Andy’s travels as we catch up with him along his journey. 6

Forty businesses in North Liverpool have scooped green gongs for going that extra eco-mile. Hairdressers, health shops, cafes, clothes shops and solicitors are just some of the firms in Anfield and Everton who have scooped a bronze Tidy Business Award. Liverpool city council’s executive member, councillor Berni Turner, said: “Businesses are playing a really important role in Liverpool’s Year of the Environment and are making sure they have a positive, green impact on their local area – after all, the greener and cleaner an organisation is, the more people will want to shop there.” The accolade is part of a national scheme to educate and reward good environmental practices and is carried out by Liverpool city council and Enterprise Liverpool in partnership with Stepclever. Stepclever Project Manager, John Anderson, said: “We work hard with local businesses to make sure they grow and flourish, and encouraging eco-friendly practices is a key part of this. “It’s all in the interest of the business to sign up to take part, as not only is it free, but will show they are setting a fantastic green example for others to follow.” For more information please visit www.liverpool. gov.uk/environment

OUR DAY OUT

SOCIAL

Image from www.rwforumites.co.uk/Santa%20Dash.htm

The Willy Russell production has proved to be a sell out smash hit for the Royal Court Theatre with over 30,000 people attending the performances over the run, and we’re not surprised. Our visit to see the hit show ended in rapturous applause and a standing ovation for the energetic cast. The young cast gave stellar performances, whilst the older contingent didn’t disappoint and carried the show with quips, gags and a few nifty moves (you know who you are!) Iain Christie, marketing manager for the Royal Court, said: “This show is breaking all of our sales records, Our Day Out can now lay claim to three of the top five sales days at Royal Court Liverpool.” Our Day Out was a massive TV hit when it was originally written in 1976 and was later turned into a popular stage play. Willy Russell has brought the play into the 21st century and reworked the script, added some fantastic songs and created a brand new musical that will have you laughing and tapping your feet all the way home. Willy Russell said: “I’m delighted to have forged a working relationship with the wonderful Royal Court and to be launching

SANTA DASH IS BACK

Not only is the famous Santa Dash back again for another year this 6 December, it is also taking on opponents in Las Vegas, USA! The Lord Mayor of Liverpool has vowed that the city will beat their challengers into submission if Las Vegas attempts to take on Liverpool in this year’s race, and has laid down a bid to become the Santa Dash city with the highest number of people taking part. Councillor Mike Storey has written to the Mayor of Las Vegas to lay down the gauntlet, and told us: “Las Vegas may well be the gambling capital of America but the smart money is on Liverpool.

FACES LAUNCHES IN LIVERPOOL

Brand new promotional staffing agency, Faces, is to launch next month in Liverpool. Powered by lifestyle PR and marketing agency, Think Publicity, Faces promises the best promotional street crew, hospitality and leafleting staff to support any campaign. Creator and Think director, Phil Nixon, said: “I am really excited to launch Faces. It makes perfect sense to launch this service as we know better than anyone what is needed from an event worker. “We have seen a huge response with people applying and we can’t wait to start placing our first faces.” Faces will set itself apart from other promotional staffing agencies by offering a clear cut grading system for their staff. Individuals will be categorized into three bands Cyan, Magenta and Yellow dependent on experience. New faces will be able to register online, upload an image and

They may well be famous for their casinos and boxing events but it will be Liverpool who delivers the knockout punch. “This year we aim to have the highest number of Santa’s running anywhere in the world and I would urge as many people as possible to dig out their trainers and join in.” The 5k dash takes place on Sunday 6 December at 9.30am starting near the Liver Buildings and finishing at the Town Hall. LIVERPOOL FOOD AND DRINK AWARDS

Well it was a scrumptious night by all accounts – all the great and good of the city’s gourmet world turned out for the fun awards evening at the Pan Am bar and restaurant, Albert Docks. Cocktails, San Miguel and plate upon plate of fantastic fodder summed up a night populated with cheers for the winning restaurants. Amongst them were the wonderful Italian Club Fish (Best Restaurant), The Quarter

(Best Value-for-Money) and, interestingly, though unsurprisingly – Chaophraya (Best Toilets – yes, really!). The awards ended a hugely successful week of events, that saw world class chef, Marco Pierre White visit the city, a whole day dedicated to cheese and chocolate, and an enormous feast spanning the length of Hope Street to name but a few. We just can’t wait for next year!

ELTON HITS LIVERPOOL! Elton John’s spectacular show, The Red Piano, is set to rock the stage at the Echo Arena Liverpool this 28 October, and will be the final chance for fans to enjoy the spectacle of the David LaChappelle-designed Vegas smash hit. Elton, a fan of the city, said he was looking forward to a return to the north-west: “We really enjoyed playing to Liverpool last December, the reaction from the audience and the musical history that the city has left us in doubt that the Echo Arena had to be the last venue we played in the UK. The Red Piano show began in 2004 and ran for over 240 performances in Vegas and has since toured the world. The show features Elton and his band performing the pick of his phenomenal back catalogue including hits such as Rocket Man, Yellow Brick Road and Candle in the Wind - surrounded by a visual feast of images from throughout his unparalleled career. As much as the show is a treat for all music-lovers, the sheer visual entertainment in reason enough to want a ticket for this event. Designer David LaChappelle explained: “The show is a visual extravaganza, a collage of all the outrageous and beautiful images Elton has been responsible for in his career. “I just wanted it to sparkle and shine and just be lush – almost edible, like looking at a candy store. Elton has had a lot of fun. This was a way of showing that love of performing and pay tribute to it. To book tickets please visit www. echoarena.com or call the Echo Arena Box Office on 0844 8000 400 9

ALLTOGETHER NOW INTERVIEW WITH THE CREATOR OF SMASH HIT STAGE SHOWS, BRICK UP THE MERSEY TUNNEL AND ONE NIGHT IN ISTANBUL.

When writer Nicky Allt arrived at LLM Towers for his interview, he bounced in with enough Scouse charm to power the ferry ‘cross the Mersey. The playwright, author, novelist, social commentator and screenwriter (more of that later) has accomplished in a few years what others could only ever hope to achieve in their lifetimes. He’s penned acclaimed stage shows Brick Up the Mersey Tunnel and One Night in Istanbul – both rocketing successes in the city – and is the author of several books such as Boys from the Mersey and A Smashing Little Football Firm. A true source of motivational verve and talent, Nicky has enthusiasm and spark oozing from every pore and what’s even better is... he wants to share it! When we caught up with Nicky, he was fresh from a few weeks’ solitude scribbling away and was in need of natter – well, he came to the right place! 10

So Nicky, what’s new? The past couple of weeks I’ve been burying myself away writing my new play, new book and new movie - but what’s happening that’s really big is that I’m opening a publishing company! So what’s the company called? Same as the production company – Bang On Top. We’ll publish anything that we think is marketable and will sell. I think that’s the way you’ve got to be today. People have got that much entertainment in front of their eyes, with the internet, channels on the telly, theatres, the movies – they have a short attention span. If you don’t grab someone’s attention fast, they’re not buying it. Good luck – it sounds really interesting... Well, we’ve done a lot of work in conjunction with the Liverpool Community College; the whole play of One Night in Istanbul got done through the college – I gave actors jobs from there, kids who were training to be actors. I think young people can struggle to get on and to get themselves heard today. To get heard you’ve either got to have a really rich mum and dad and go and stop work for three years or save a load of money and stop work for three years, and just go for it – which is what I did. I was literally skint, and then Brick Up the Mersey Tunnels kicked in and I got a pay cheque, then my first book kicked in and I got a pay cheque. I put off starting writing for ages, then had my 40th birthday and thought ‘Sod this!’ and had some sort of midlife crisis and thought ‘I’m doing it! Have you always written throughout your life – kept journals for example or written stories? I always wish I’d kept journals – the sorts of things we used to get up to; I’ve forgotten most of them now! I always wrote stories though – everywhere I travelled I carried books or plays with me. I loved the football, but I was always reading something and people would skit me about it but I was looking and thinking ‘I can do this’. There were two things I could do at school – play football and write – and all me teachers were saying to me – ‘Go and do your degree in English’ and I used to look at them

and think ‘What are you on about? I just need a job and some money!’ Before you know it twenty years have gone by. When did this dream of writing start to become a reality for you? I think that when you start doing stuff, and you’re doing the right thing that you’re supposed to be doing in the right way, then I think things definitely start to conspire in your favour. That’s the feeling I get now. It’s like I’m doing the right thing, and the more I do, the more it’ll work for me. Sorry to sound airy fairy but that’s what I think. You’ve said in the past that ‘There are no finer story tellers than Liverpudlians’ – how so? Well there probably are, but I guess I’m saying it because I’m from here – but there’s something in that mongrel blood, and especially that Celtic connection. I think because of that Celtic influence in Liverpool a lot of people here were born to tell stories. That’s why all people ever do is stand around in pubs telling them – they’re known for it. But it’s being able to take it that one step further. I remember Willy Russell saying once ‘If you put an advert in a window in Liverpool saying ‘Scripts Wanted’ the letterbox will be full right up the window the next day. How do you go further to champion and support young emerging talent? Young people now can say they want to be a writer – and people don’t laugh at them. The next thing is to try and help them be a writer. I think a lot of people my age have about one story in them but when people in their twenties are writing plays I think there’s got to be something there to have that passion at that age. At the moment I’m trying to set up something with the LCC where people can come in and speak to me and stuff. We use totally unknown actors – with the Empire that’s what we did. I want to see some writers who are 25-30 – a little bit of life experience is needed I think on the whole. You have to know a few little things about how the cookie crumbles. What lies ahead for your stage productions now? I want to go outside of Liverpool – things get safe in places and it becomes an equilibrium where people have vested interests in getting a living out of it and don’t want things to change. And fresh blood to the city makes things change. I feel that when I’m in my own city I’ve got an immigrant attitude. I treat myself like an outsider in Liverpool. I think I was resting on my laurels in years gone by, but no more. I really, really annoy people until they listen to me and put my play on! You said you were writing a film at the moment – do divulge. One Night in Istanbul the movie is going ahead! We’re in talks at the moment but it sounds great. I’d love to tell you more but I’m sworn to secrecy at the moment. Watch this space for details on Nicky’s film, and catch performances of his sell-out shows in 2010. 11

Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool

starring the amazing

Joe Longthorne

The affable, effervescent and thoroughly fabulous Herbert of Liverpool is once again throwing the party to top all parties. Queenie’s Christmas is undoubtedly the most talked about event on Liverpool’s social calendar and this year’s offering won’t disappoint.

& his orchestra

Tickets are only £135 pp – guests will be treated to vintage champagne throughout the evening, as Herbert says: “There legendary singing sensations will be no red or white wine on the tables here, only fine vintage Champagne will be served for our guests at Queenie’s Christmas.” A glorious grotto, complete with Father Christmas himself, will be open to guests who will collect their own festive treats from Santa and his helpers, up to the value of £100 per guest. This glitzy, glamorous and gorgeous event puts the sparkle back into fundraising. Herbert is an avid supporter and instigator of local charities, also featuring and proceeds and donations from the event will all go towards Herbert’s magnificent Christmas day party for underprivileged children and local citizens. Queenie’s Christmas is the only registered charity that has absolutely no administration charges, so as much money as possible goes straight to those in need. Patrons of the charity will be out in force to support the charity – celebrities and local personalities such as Jennifer Ellison, Claire Sweeney, Ricky Tomlinson, Pete Price and Esther McVey are amongst the familiar faces.

The Real Thing

Herbert has received such support for the charity and is inundated with performers and artists that want to help out at the Christmas day lunch, where over 750 needy individuals will be catered for and provided with amazing festive fun to brighten up the Christmas period. It is easy to get swept up in the whirl of baubles, presents and parties around Christmas time and forget the many thousands of people out there who aren’t able to celebrate. Maybe they have no family and friends, have had a tough year or little money. It can make Christmas one of the most stressful and upsetting events on the calendar instead. Queenie’s Christmas goes a long way to put that right for the people of Liverpool – recognising that Christmas is a time for giving – and what better way to do so than to raise oodles of cash for this fantastic cause? The black tie gala ball, this 14 November, will be held at the iconic Adelphi hotel. With only a few places left for this starstudded, glittering gala event you really must book now to avoid missing out! The event is also in support of the Lord Mayor’s Children’s Christmas Party, held annually at the Town Hall in December.

Fashion is always a reflection of the times; past, present and future. What can be seen flaunted across catwalks shows presentation of fantasies, hopes and fears. How then do we create an individual look, when the only thing we can be certain of in fashion is that everything is going to change? The key to this is editing! Dressing well is about editing an already original and individual look to suit the catwalk criteria of the season. And what better way to do this than using ecofriendly products? This autumn’s theme is eco-friendly and it's taking the catwalks by storm.

Earthy colours are in, according to Pantone's autumn colour trends; Honey Yellow, Crème Brûlée, Iron, Burnt Sienna, American Beauty Red and Marbles are exactly what we need in our wardrobes this season. Incorporate Eco-Friendly and Fairtrade into your wardrobe with a GUILT EDGED t-shirt dress or a Frank and Faith beaded necklace (Fairtrade items can also be found in Topshop). Colours are everything in these autumnal months, so use them wisely. Black is back! Use it with splashes of colour and pale tones for an edgy night-time style. Christian Lacroix's collection is amazing this autumn, so take tips. Think traditional English heritage, miniskirts, and outrageous artistic shapes. Incorporate this style into your look by adding one-off pieces to your already fabulous wardrobe. Christian Cota suggests imagining travelling to the centre of the earth, exploring layers of minerals and jagged edges of rocks, combining earthy tones with layers and shapes. Don’t be scared to experiment - combine military with feminine tailoring, serious shoulders pads with a fitted minidress; be frivolous with cheer up outfits (love killer heels...love the 1980's power bitch). Try different looks to ensure you've got every occasion covered. Most of all – enjoy the variety and have fun! Words by Toni Naylor

NETWORK! Summer’s over and events, launches and networking gigs are kicking in again all over the city. If you’re new to networking, want to know more, or just don’t know where to look for all the best events then you’ve come to the right place. Each issue we focus on one networking event, have top advice from the city’s most seasoned networkers and a listings of the next big nights.

FOCUS ON... B.N.I BNI is a 24 year old business and professional organisation that allows only one person from each trade or profession to join a chapter. With over 5,291 active chapters, and 111,733 members, it is the most successful business referral organisation in the world. Belonging to BNI is like having dozens of sales people working for you because all the other members carry copies of your card with them. When they meet someone new that could use your products or services they hand out your card and personally recommend your services. Last year members of BNI passed over 5.6 million referrals, which generated more than €1.7 billion worth of business. There are several chapters in Liverpool each full to the brim with dedicated and satisfied members. Find out more by visiting www.bni-europe.com, thousands swear by it! The majority of BNI meetings are early breakfast events – perfect for early birds, and a great way to kick off your working day.

IN THE

K N OW This issue, Laura Finn of Think Publicity shares her thoughts on successful approaches to networking.

Inspirational quotes from networking boffins. “Position yourself as a centre of influence - the one who knows the movers and shakers. People will respond to that, and you'll soon become what you project.”

Bob Burg

“Informal conversation is probably the oldest mechanism by which opinions on products and brands are developed, expressed, and spread.”

Johan Arndt

"The best prospect is the client who has already dealt with you. The second best is the one referred to by a client who has dealt with you previously. The third best is the one referred to you by another trusted professional or friend."

Marilyn Jennings

“More business decisions occur over lunch and dinner than at any other time, yet no MBA courses are given on the subject."

Peter Drucker

I have just returned from a daylong conference in Leeds and have networking on my mind, but not just the face-to-face interaction, more the social media variety. You may be tweeting and updating your Facebook status and setting up groups, but are you bookmarking? Stumbling? Up on your torrents, down on your blogs? A whole new world of jargon to meet a new world of people. This summer, 150 people joined Think at One Park West to hug the building after it received some flak for its design. We didn’t know them, they’d only found us after we set up a Twitter and Facebook campaign. Communication is the key to networking, but increasingly you’re more likely to find the people you need to get in touch with online and using social media. It is a new global market, a click of a button away.

Forget fluffy tutus and silly prancing – the ENB produces stunning visual drama via the medium of world class dance. If you’ve never been to a ballet, now is the time to start. This issue we've delved into Liverpool's nooks and crannies to unearth some of its best kept secrets. Good, honest grub sourced locally and made with love, isn't that nice? The city is full to the brim with small eateries that offer fantastic value but don't skimp on quality. It's this independent, individual charm that gives Liverpool its unique fusion of high-end gloss and glamour and original, rugged character. A trio of top tasters sourced the city's finest bistros and bars and have come up with the top three; the elegant and tasteful Bistro Franc, the theatrical and creative Everyman Bistro, and the laidback and chic Studio 2. If you want to save a few pennies but can't compromise on quality then you must pay a visit to the following venues.

STUDIO 2 33-45 PARR STREET, L1 4JN T: 0151 707 1050 WWW.PARRSTREET.CO.UK

I like to think of myself as a pretty cool, hip, girl-about-town (does that make me uncool? Does anyone use the word ‘cool’ anymore?) so imagine my delight at reviewing Liverpool’s top secret, highly groovy, rather sexy and fabulous Studio 2. By night, Studio2 truly comes alive with the sound of eclectic live bands or the chattering hum of happy friends, but it is a lunch date I have today, so am rather intrigued to see how it differs by daylight. The venue has already built up a solid reputation for its great breakfasts (several morning business meetings are held here through the week) and has recently launched a new lunch menu; aimed at diners who want great, fresh food away from the buzz of the city. The renovated recording studio has retained almost all of the original features – speakers and all – and lays claim to welcoming some of the world’s most recognisable musicians. Black Sabbath, the Spice Girls, Coldplay, Take That and Barry Manilow (to name a few) have all recorded iconic albums here. Anyway – to food. Head chef at Studio 2 is the aptly named Ian Cook, highest scorer of all time on the cult TV show, ‘Come Dine With Me’. And dine with him we shall – except today he has passed the mantle on to (the equally wonderfully named) Kitty Rae. Today Kitty has a great selection of specials on offer alongside the regular menu and it is from this we order. Lucy has her eye on the smoked haddock fishcakes that come with a fresh seasonal salad and tartar sauce, whilst my gaze hovers over the salmon Benedict dish but eventually settles on a

whopping plate of bangers, mash and red wine and onion gravy (all £6). The two fishcakes that arrived were just enormous; toasted breadcrumbs encased delicate fresh fish, herbs and potato and the sauce was light and zingy alongside the crisp salad. It was evident that everything is clearly made from scratch, using really fresh, good quality ingredients on a menu that has had a lot of thought put into its contents. Bangers and mash. Well, what can I say? It was divine – three huge meaty sausages sunk heavily into the smoothest buttery mash I’ve had in a long time. The gravy was light and full of flavour – no Bisto granules here I assure you. I wasn’t going to have a dessert, really I wasn’t, but that Lucy’s a naughty one and said the walk up the hill would cancel it out. I agreed, and ordered a chocolate brownie with cream. Lucy went for sticky toffee pudding and pecan sauce (both £3) and promised she wouldn’t tell anyone how much I’d eaten. Now, I’ve eaten many a chocolate brownie in my time – in fact I consider myself quite the expert. This chocolate brownie was the most divine, unctuous, gooey, rich, heart-meltingly, tonguesuckingly amazing thing I’ve had the pleasure of eating in quite some time and for a mere three pounds – three pounds I ask you! – has to be one of the best value desserts in the city. Lucy’s sticky toffee was pretty darn amazing too but I could tell she had food envy at my plate of perfection. The stand out thing with the food here is the unbelievable value for money you get. The food is well portioned, well put together, ingredients are carefully sourced and cooked fantastically – and I would expect to pay triple if served the same menu in other areas of the city. Studio 2 really reflects the cool, quirkiness that Liverpool is all about but with a little extra polish, and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. JM

UNCORKED We love autumn. It’s a season of warm, comforting snuggly blankets, steaming fruit puds and rich red wine. Mmm, yes, rich red wine – something like Barolo would go down a treat as the nights draw in and the temperature drops. Barolo is an Italian wine, produced in Cuneo’s

24

province, south-west of Alba within the southern end Piemonte. It came about in the 1800s (and therefore is relatively new in the world of Italian wines) when the Marchesa Giulietta Colbert Falletti started making wine out of Nebbiolo grapes. Barolo is produced in the communes of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and parts of the communes of Cherasco, Diano d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba,

BISTRO FRANC HANOVER STREET, LIVERPOOL, L1 3DW T: 0151 708 9993 WWW.BISTROFRANC.COM Bistro Franc is a relatively new kid on the block, and completes the Bistro chain hat-trick (brothers Jacques and Pierre are also located in the city). The restaurant is everything you’d expect from a quintessential French restaurant – elegant, simple and chic and with an air of confidence in its cuisine. Myself and my fellow Rosbif trotted down for an evening meal at the venue recently, welcomed by the soft focus glow of candle light we took our seats in the upstairs dining area. The venue is actually far larger than the exterior would have you believe, and holds over 130 covers within its walls. The menu is as you would expect – with hints here and there towards modern English fare, and provides a wealth of choice between duck, chicken, lamb, fish and beef as well as several decent vegetarian options too. Our friendly waiting staff (including a lovely man called Francoise, really, how French can you get?) looked after us superbly throughout the night. The gingham covered tables and wine bottle candles go further to underline the owners’ eagerness to provide a thoroughly authentic dining experience for the customer, and the wine list was similarly placed. We ordered our food and sipped on a delightful Sauvignon Blanc (La Campagne 2008) in the meantime. In an effort to remain true to our European cousins, we ordered the Soupe du Jour (£2.95) – homemade French onion soup with a gruyere cheese

EVERYMAN BISTRO 5-9 HOPE STREET, L1 9BH T: 0151 708 9545 WWW.EVERYMAN.CO.UK Nestled beneath the floorboards of the famous Everyman Theatre, The Everyman Bistro takes centre stage on the food front. Attracting a mixed crowd, from professors to students and media types, the menu reflects this ‘something for everyone’ philosophy, which seems to be demanded everywhere. The blackboards above the food counter house at least eight different menus which change on a regular basis. So, it’s a casual and varied affair. With items ranging from Southport Potted Shrimp, to Stinking Bishop tart, the ingredients follow the same values owners Paddy Byrne and Dave Scott instilled when they first opened way back in 1974; to use the best local produce wherever possible, to cook them well, and to be able to trace the origin of all of the ingredients. This week sees the Everyman Cider Festival in full swing, so, consequently, many of the dishes featured on the menu contain a good splash of the locally matured liquor. This included some

Novello, Roddi, Verduno, all in the province of Cuneo. Only vineyards in the hills with suitable slopes and orientations are considered adapted to production, and the terrains must be primarily clayey-calcareous in character. The wine is produced solely from the Nebbiolo grape variety. Nebbiolo thrives during prolonged summer seasons producing clusters that are dark blue and greyish in colour. Barolo wines are typically a deep red and can take on an

croute – a more traditional starter we could not have chosen. Full of flavour; salty; meaty and filling, the soup was the perfect antidote to the chilly day. My moules basquaise (£4.95), fresh steamed mussels in a rich tomato, olive and red pepper sauce – were fantastically plump and were great value for money. The tangy tomato sauce was refreshingly light and there was a good hit of garlic in there. The following fillets of sea bass, served on a bed of spiced cous cous and a mild pineapple and chilli salsa (£11.95) were delicious – the salsa was zingy and sweet, and cut through the spice in the cous cous perfectly. My date couldn’t resist the lure of the filet de boeuf (£16.95) that came with a crumbling of strong Stilton and a red wine jus and declared it was the “piece de resistance” to her evening. ‘What about me?’ I thought. Desserts came with a flourish – banoffee pie for her and a fruity passion fruit crème brulee for me (both around £4). Bistro Franc offers excellent value for money and a menu that goes the extra mile for French authenticity. We found the service to be attentive, friendly and informative and the menu was as affable as a moustached Frenchman in a beret. The three Bistro brothers have done well for themselves in the city, and it is easy to see why. The simple dishes are tasty, affordable and varied and a range of clientele is catered for. Theatre goers can enjoy a decent meal rather than a rushed sarnie on the way out, and a lunch date can be transformed from coffee and cake to cafe et poisson (strange combo, but that’s as far as my school French will take me). Bistro Franc offers a great location for romantic dates, family lunches or a girly catch up and what’s even better is that it won’t break the bank. Thumbs up. DB

of the desserts, as well as the ham, leek, cider and cheese tart, which I simply couldn’t resist. Resembling an upright cornucopia, this horn of pastry was beautifully creamy with contrasting textures and flavours coming through, as the chunks of salty ham cut through the gooey sauce. The crunchy leeks and steamed vegetable adding the finishing, al dente touch. Teamed with a frosty glass of Kent Cox cloudy apple juice, this is autumnal, rib-sticking fare at its best. Despite feeling warm and contented after this rustic fodder, I was able to approach the counter for one of their ‘famous puddings’. With a veritable smorgasbord of desserts on offer, I was presented with a difficult decision between fifteen separate sweets, and an extensive local cheese board. One item on display did however stand out, the rainbow in a glass; the strawberry and passion fruit fool. With fresh, fruity flavours from the sweet red berries complementing the sharp acidity from the bursting passion fruit pips, this silky syllabub, full of explosions of flavour, finished with the crisp sweetness of meringue. This uncomplicated approach to food has seen the proprietors through the seasons, as they make the most of what’s available to them, causing the hungry theatre-goers and respective ale drinkers to come back for seconds. HS

unusual orange tinge with age. Their flavour is thick and complex. Barolo typically smells of tar, violets, and roses, but also has hints of fruit, liquorice, and can be oaky. Barolo should be drunk at 60F and can age for 5-10 years. Pair this velvety, beautiful wine with a hearty meat dish, such as a good beef stew, roast game or the classic Italian Osso Bucco. 25

ART IN THE NORSE-WEST November the 19th sees the return of the Festival of Nordic Arts and Culture; a colossal collaboration between the Nordic countries of Finland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and of course, the North-West.

This spectacular calendar event promises even more excitement and enticing activities than last year’s festivities, winding down on the 3rd December on the lead up to the Christmas countdown. The festival is partnered with The Bluecoat, as well as a handful of other useful spaces within the city of Liverpool (and beyond). The festival utilises the many facilities that The Bluecoat provides, as it stands today as one of the oldest and most distinctive buildings within the city centre. Some two hundred years ago, when The Bluecoat was in its infancy, Liverpool was a bustling port that opened up the Americas, and beyond to the Scandinavians. This allowed them safe passage between the countries, but many stayed on sharing their Nordic influences with the city. In this sense, it seems quite fitting that such an age-old bond be re-kindled through a historically rich environment like this. The Bluecoat itself has seen a transformation from a school:"dedicated to the promotion of Christian charity and the training of poor boys in the principles of the Anglican Church", to that of one of the cornerstones of Liverpool’s artistic life and movement. The very soul of the city. The curators at The Bluecoat maintain and restore this essence of originality and versatility, as this space continues to adapt with the cultural climate. Different forms of media find their home here in recent participation programmes, such as regular reading groups which encourage and educate. As well as celebrations of featured local writers and artists, such as the centenary of Wirral born novelist, Malcolm Lowry. Festival organiser (and adopted Scouser) Ingi-Thor Jonsson’s rich vision of Scandinavian arts, crafts and cultures combining in the form of the NICE 09, sees the occasion into its second year. Speaking at last year’s event, Jonsson professes; "Our purpose is to bring a taste of Iceland and the Nordic countries to the north of England, and to bring an exciting roster of young Nordic talent to the attention of the British public. Reykjavik's only a couple of hour's flight time away yet, still, Iceland feels as far away as Fiji to most people. This festival aims to change all that". The age-old links that tie two seemingly distant cultures together can be seen in simple things in the North-West such as Viking place names; Thingwall, Formby, Crosby and Kirkby; stark reminders of the invasions Britain suffered over the past, as well as the foreign cultures it learnt to embrace over time.

From Thursday the 19th November, Liverpool will see the collaborative works between the UK and the Nordic countries re- emerge. Through the mediums of design, music, literature, food, fine art and film; venues FACT, The Bluecoat, Novas CUC and The Maritime Museum will be bustling hives of activity during this cultural, creative exchange. Exhibitions at The Bluecoat and the Novas Contemporary Urban Centre capture the contemporary and traditional spirit of Nordic design, its functionality in the everyday, as well as its simplistic style. Knitting is explored, subverting gender stereotypes in Karl Christian Geleff’s exhibit. Contrasting with the seemingly coarse Knit-and-bitch organised by Bluecoat residents Purlesque and Biggan, are the clean, minimalist ceramic designs presented in The Hub Gallery. Diversifying the experience, contemporary artist Daniel Milton of Sweden, fuses different materials in order to create something surreal, something which cannot be categorised, breaking with tradition and rules alike. Musical and dance performances across the city (and beyond) capture the customary and contemporary spirit of the festival, building links between the old and new, the North-West and Scandinavia. In the space of an evening you’re transported from a folky, fairytale about the Northern Lights, uttered through song, to recounting tales in the style of The Brothers Grimm through puppetry. To journeying across the on gelid waters of the North Atlantic, to the Faroe Islands, and the electro-audiovisual styling’s of Picture Book. Poetry readings and film cap off the festival in the Scandimania event, which also includes some educational talks on influential artists across the borders. The historical and contemporary collide through e-space-lab, a video streaming project, by a collaboration of artists attempting to connect the local in the context of the global. In the meantime, various more traditional Nordic events take place across the city. Celebrating diversity and emerging artists, Jonsson’s artistic policy transpires as historical and cultural links between the North-West and the Nordic countries are explored, and new, unique and inspirational links take place before your very eyes. JOYOUS MACHINES

CULTURE

Tate Liverpool is currently hosting a superb exhibition entitled Joyous Machines: Michael Landy and Jean Tinguely that focuses upon the connection between the work of Jean Tinguely (1925 – 1991), one of the most radical, inventive and subversive sculptors of the mid-twentieth century, and renowned British artist Michael Landy, who has been significantly influenced by Tinguely and his constructive and destructive tendencies. Landy will co-curate the exhibition, and will devote special attention to Tinguely’s rarely examined early career, tracing the development of his work from the late 1940s building up to his momentous Homage to New York. This, the most famous and influential of all ‘auto-destructive’ works of art, was a 27ft high self-destroying mechanism that came to life for 27 minutes before catching fire during a performance in the Sculpture Garden of the Museum of Modern Art, New York on 17 March 1960. Joyous Machines: Michael Landy and Jean Tinguely is currently H.2.N.Y. Self-constructing Self-destroying Tinguely Machine, Museum of Modern Art, 17th March 1960, 2006 showing until January 2010. THE BEAT GOES ON...BUT NOT FOR LONG!

One of the city’s most popular attractions is drawing to a close at World Museum. From the Beatles to the Zutons, the 40s to the present day, Liverpool continues to be a top 10 hit and The Beat Goes On exhibition which runs until 1 November 2009, has been wowing visitors with an unforgettable experience throughout its 16-month run. The first exhibition of its kind to explore the city’s musical identity in its entirety, The Beat Goes On displays hoards of memorabilia to reveal a rich musical heritage and vibrant music scene which continues to produce success stories and leave its mark across the globe. Drawing on a wealth of material from record companies, institutions and private collectors The Beat Goes On also features a large number of fascinating objects from National Museums Liverpool’s own collection; a number of which will go on display in the new Museum of Liverpool, opening 2011. The exhibition is bursting with audio, juke boxes and exciting interactives including an insight into the role of technology in modern

music production featuring a mini-recording studio and karaoke room in collaboration with SAE (School of Audio Engineering). Contemporary material includes items from current club nights in Liverpool such as Chibuku and popular bands like The Coral, The Zutons and The Wombats, who are topping the charts today and spreading the Liverpool sound to a new generation of music lovers. Merchants 62

62 Castle St, Liverpool, L2 7LQ Tel: 0151 702 7897 www.62castlest.com/merchants-restaurant.php Merchants is Liverpool’s brand new restaurant on Castle Street. Formerly Room, Merchants has done a great job of putting its stamp on the high-domed Georgian space. The bar area has changed, now protruding into the middle of the room in a square which makes it more welcoming – think ‘Cheers’ but without the barflies. Sitting in a quiet corner we looked at the impressive but thankfully jargon-free menu, pleasantly surprised by the variety of choice available. We nibbled on marinated olives and sun blushed tomatoes (£2.95) to whet our appetites before we dived into our food. On recommendation I ordered Tempura soft shell crab, radish and crab coleslaw, (£6.25). The crab was battered in its shell and arrived looking beautiful; a crisp, delicately battered crab, halved on top of a bed of homemade coleslaw. An absolutely stunning starter that has to be tried to believed, I would go as far as saying that this is the best start to a meal I have had dining in Liverpool (high praise indeed! – Ed). My friend went for pan fried king prawns, sushi flavoured risotto (£6.95) which was everything you would want from a prawn and risotto dish but without the wow factor of the crab (I'm sorry but it stole the day!). We chinked glasses to a bottle of Vin de Pays d'Oc Rothschild, Pinot Noir from France (£18.95). A warm, rich red with an aromatic bouquet – and perfectly complemented our main course choices.

My friend’s pork belly, crushed butternut squash with tomato and chorizo chutney (£12.95) was a tasty latticetopped hunk of pork belly, fresh vegetables in cabbage leaf parcels and a stunning quenelle of the chutney. A flavourfilled dish that looked and tasted delicious. The 8oz beef fillet made a beeline for my placesetting; served with homemade chunky chips, air dried tomato (£21.95) and smokey onion rings (£2.50). When I cut into the 2" thick tender fillet I knew this was no ordinary steak. The tower of chips and the delicately battered onion rings were a great accompaniment. Suitable stuffed we decided to go halves on the tiramisu with coffee ice cream (£4.50) portioned hugely and served in a way I hadn't seen before - the tiramisu served in a large cappuccino cup and the ice cream in a tiny espresso cup absolutely delish! Overall, the food was superb, price was fantastic for the excellent quality, service was personal and attentive and the atmosphere oozed luxury and grandeur. A must visit place that is sure to be a complete success.

Oops! Last issue we misprinted contact details for the lovely Merchants 62. All present and correct now, and we highly recommend a visit!

PURE PAINTING

ÂWonderful!Ê we cry – but hang on, think of all the nasty chemicals in one pot of emulsion, all those windows that would be flung open (in this cold autumn air – oooh the chill) for the fumes, not to mention the lasting effect on your precious brickwork. Fear not, dear readers, for we have found a solution. Eco-paints that are kind to you and your home, and most importantly donÊt cost the Earth. One of the top paint and paper manufacturers in the UK, Farrow & Ball, has developed a whole range of eco-friendly formulations that have been created without any compromise on the high standard of performance or quality of the ingredients used. The company has significantly reduced the solvent in its products, and now over 90 per cent of the Farrow & Ball range is classified as having either a low, minimal or zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content – look out for the ‘e’ symbol featured on each tin. They combine the environmental qualities of a water-based system with the performance benefits of the traditional oil-based system. As a result, they have comparable performance to their oil-based counterparts but with reduced drying time and no odour. Independent decorator merchants, Robinson and Neal, based in stores around the North West, are the main stockists of Farrow & Ball in the Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales area and are currently celebrating over 100 years of trading. The company can source any wallpaper – however unusual – and its professional staff offer technical advice and excellent service. As well as providing customers with an eco-friendly option via Farrow & Ball, Robinson and Neal are also suppliers of Earthborn paints. Earthborn is a range of eco paints and natural varnishes designed to provide a healthier and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional paints and varnishes. Whether you are looking for VOC free paint, organic paint and varnish, breathable, natural or healthy paint then Earthborn has a product to suit your needs. INVEST!

SAVE!

INVEST!

SPEND!

business SPEND!

SPEND! SAVE!

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY! As a nation, we’ve collectively been hit with a barrage of conflicting information over the past years on how best to save our pennies. Now, at a time when cash is at the forefront of the country’s mind, sensible saving options are more relevant and important than ever. As a population that has become so used to spending, it can be a big shift to change our habits and begin squirreling away our earnings. Step in Partners Credit Union. Jenny Morris talks to chief executive, Tracey Schuler, about the organisation and how it could help savers. Tell us a bit about Partners Credit Union... Partners was established 16 years ago and is a democratic, notfor-profit, financial co-operative, which is owned and controlled by its members. I suppose a little bit like the Building Societies of old. Anyone who lives or works in Merseyside can join Partners. Each member, regardless of account size in the credit union, has one vote at annual meetings and may run for the Board of Directors. Each member saves with the credit union, this then creates a pot of money which other members can then borrow from at affordable rates. We do not invest in the stock market or engage in other risky financial activities and the Board of Directors are all volunteers. Any surplus funds at the end of each financial year are returned to members in the form of a dividend.

by a whole host of legislation and therefore have to be both professional and compliant.

What are the advantages of joining the CU? The Credit Union is owned and run BY members FOR members - who all have access to ethical, safe and affordable financial services. All funds are kept within the credit union and utilised by members only so you could say we’re helping the local economy too by keeping the money within the local community!

Does the CU provide businesses with specific help? At the moment only individuals can join the credit union, however they can apply for personal loans which could be used to support their business. Legislation changes next year will mean that organisations can join credit unions, so this will open up further opportunities for us in the future. As well as this, we have in excess of 50 companies/organisations such as Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Fire & Rescue, Aintree Hospitals Trust etc, who feel access to credit union services is important for their staff and so offer free payroll deduction.

How easy is it to start saving with the CU? Just fill in a simple application form and you’re ready to go – and you can save from as little as £1 per week. You can either set up a standing order from your bank, pay cash in at our office or if you work for one of our sponsoring employers then you can have your money taken straight from you pay – your employer won’t know whether its savings or loan so no need to worry. However, we’re finding the most popular form of paying in now is the Paypoint card. Every new member receives a card and they can pay their credit union at over 200 Paypoint outlets in Merseyside, whenever they want. With the current recession in mind, how secure is the CU compared with other financial options? Partners is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority and members’ savings are covered up to £50,000 by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme – just like the banks and building societies. We are strictly regulated and governed

How have you seen public saving habits changed over the past year/s? A lot of people have lost faith in the banks and some have lost money. We’ve certainly seen an increase in people joining Partners over the past year and people give us various reasons for that but one of the top ones is that they don’t want to be lining the banks pockets anymore and would rather put their money into an ethical organisation which cares about its members. Credit Union’s offer the ‘personal touch’ and treat you like a person, not like a number and are willing to listen to you in times of trouble!

What other services does Partners Credit Union offer? Partners has recently joined forces with the national Money Made Clear campaign and we have a trained Money Guidance Officer on site in the Dale Street Office every Monday. Members and Non-Members can receive face to face, confidential money guidance on a range of topics including budgeting, mortgages, pensions, tax, welfare benefits & tax credits. We are also in the process of researching a Prepay Debit Card which will allow members to have their credit union funds whether it be savings or a loan, loaded onto their own personal card, which can then be used in shops, ATM’s, on-line, abroad etc. For more information please visit www.partnerscreditunion. co.uk or call 0151 258 1014. 37

health

"Hi, what can I get you?" beams the lovely young (clueless) waitress. So I order my lunch - afterwards she whips up the menu and asks "Would you like the healthy option?" No, of course not, I'd rather have the fat-laden, grease-dripping, thigh-growing option please darling. After being on a detox for a few days, knowing what goes into these naughty foods (or, scarily, not knowing) will make you opt for the 'healthy option' forever! This issue is all about eco – so I’m going to write about cleansing programmes. I’m just returning from a three day cleansing weekend, feeling eco, fab and slim. As you know I’ve started cleansing programmes at my Chester clinic. One day cleansing experience, three day cleansing weekend and ten day complete tissue cleanse. All at Crabwall Manor Clinic House of Rejuvenation. Cleansing the Joanne Willcox way is about combination of proven methods to support the natural healing of the individual. The way we live today means that we inevitably take in toxic chemicals through the air we breathe and the food we eat. The desire to achieve and succeed at work- and personal relationships – too often leads to sleep disturbances and high levels of stress. Add to this a lack of exercise and a sedentary job, and the result is an exhausted body that isn’t equipped to fight infections, aches, pains, and fatigue. The approach I take flushes out the build up of unwanted chemicals and toxins that make us feel mentally and physically sluggish. We use pure water and nutritious food and juices to support the body’s natural defences and restore deficiencies. Through the Joanne Willcox Clinic you will be advised, guided and helped each step of the way towards restoring your body’s natural timing, improving breathing, sleeping and elimination. All cultures have had methods of detoxing fasting and cleansing, but in our sophisticated society we have either forgotten how or believe we don’t have time. By setting aside a period of time without rush or pressure we can restore the body’s natural balance and live healthily and happily.

How should the body cleanse?

In a nutshell – elimination happens through the colon – via the bile and liver system. Toxic gases are eliminated through the lungs. Symptoms of toxic overload and inefficient cleansing Tick any of the following statements that apply to you. If you tick more than one, you could benefit from a cleansing detox. Premature aging allergic reactions brain fog headaches and migraine coated tongue bad breath

bloating flatulence constipation mood swings depression sugar cravings hormonal imbalance (pmt) weight gain acne eczema impaired immune system A successful detox involves Removal of foods likely to contain toxins and cause food allergies. Rehydration with pure water. Optional nutrition to assist biotransformation of toxins without causing damage and free radical overload. Intestinal cleansing through colonic hydrotherapy and massage.

Three day residential cleansing break.

A complete consultation and lifestyle assessment Two colonic irrigations One massage using personalised combination of organic essential oils. A steam sauna A body wrap using Dead Sea Mud and Mineral Salts. An ear cande session Organic vegetable juices and food Caster oil packs Optional liver flush and supplementation advice Optional extra treatments from the therapists at Joanne Willcox Clinics e’spa treatments, hypnotherapy and counselling / psychotherapy. We all owe it to ourselves and our families to eat healthily – it is our duty to teach our children about health/nutrition – that doesn’t mean standing at the sink in socks and Jesus sandals listening to the radio peeling carrots. Why not treat yourself to a detox – and then you will understand the benefits. JOANNE WILLCOX, colonic hydrotherapist, has written various articles on health and nutrition over the years. She has three health clinics in Chester, Liverpool and Wirral. T: 0845 055 6418 www.joannewillcox.com 39

Q&A BOTOX Treating skin lines and creases on the upper third of the face is often done with wrinkle relaxing injections, more commonly known as Botox. This involves the injection of small quantities of Botulinum Toxin.

which usually resolves in a few hours. Sometimes there is bruising or temporary numbness. Less commonly there may be drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow or double vision. These are temporary and resolve in a few weeks.

What is Botulinum Toxin what is it made from? Botulinum Toxin is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a non-surgical treatment that can temporarily reduce lines caused by over expression of certain muscles, such as frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet. It is used in people between the ages of 18 to 65. During the treatment, very small amounts of Botulinum Toxins are administered using a very tiny needle directly into the muscles that cause expression lines. Depending upon the number of areas that need treating and the experience of the Botulinum Toxin practitioner, treatments take about 10 - 20 minutes and are usually painless. No recovery time is needed and you should begin to see an improvement within 3-4 days and the results usually last up to four months. There are several types of botulinum toxin. Type A is most commonly used and the main brands are Botox, Dysport, Vistabel, Monobloc and Xeomin.

Will my facial expressions look natural after treatment? Although the effects and results are visible after about three days, treatment with Botulinum Toxin will not dramatically change your facial appearance or make you look totally expressionless. The muscle activity that causes the forehead frown lines is simply reduced, so you should still be able to frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

How does Botulinum Toxin work? Frown lines between your brows, lines across your forehead and crow’s feet form over time as the result of muscle activity and so the theory behind treatment is to reduce this muscle activity. Botulinum Toxin is injected directly into the muscles or under the skin and it works by blocking the signals from nerves to the muscle fibres, thereby reducing the activity of the muscles (temporary paralysis) that cause those lines to form. When will I see results from my Botulinum Toxin treatment?

Within two to three days you may see an improvement in the skin creases, however the lines continue to improve as skin renews itself every 28 days and your skin gets smoother as the weeks roll by. The results from Botulinum Toxin last for up to four months. Regular visits for treatment are required to maintain a wrinkle free look. The effects of treatment are always temporary as the nerves gradually recover over three months. With repeated treatments the effects last longer. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women rated the improvement in their appearance as moderate to better one month after treatment. Who should administer Botulinum Toxin? Anyone who is insured and has had the appropriate training can administer Botulinum Toxin. It is advisable to seek a practitioner who has a lot of experience in this field as there are many people offering this service with little experience. In many cases all that is required is a one day course. Who should not use Botulinum Toxin? Botulinum Toxin should not be used where there is local infection at the proposed injection site and in individuals with known reactions to any of the ingredients in the injection formulation. Patients with neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, motor neurone disease or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects and should avoid Botulinum Toxin treatments. What side effects could I experience? The most common side effects are pain and swelling at the injection sites,

THE LIP DOCTOR LIMITED, 171 - 173 Liverpool Road South, Maghull, Merseyside, L31 8AA

How long has Botulinum Toxin been in use? As long ago as 1978, Botulinum Toxin was used as a treatment for patients with eye squints by weakening the overactive eye muscle. Since then it has been used in a variety of therapeutic areas such as spasmodic neck, writer's cramp, tics, multiple sclerosis, facial spasms, Parkinson's Disease, cerebral palsy and vaginismus to name but a few. Its use in cosmetics involves tiny doses and is extremely safe. What are the common cosmetic applications? Frown lines, Forehead lines, Crow’s feet, Brow lift, Lower lid wrinkling/eye opening, Smoker’s lines , Drooping mouth corners, Gummy smile, Neck bands/wrinkling, Non surgical facelift (in combination with fillers) and Sweating The Lip Doctor is an aesthetic clinic specialising in botox and dermal fillers. Its practitioners have over nine years’ experience and have performed thousands of treatments.

This year is Liverpool’s official Year of the Environment – all over the city people have made changes to their lifestyle and a little really does go a long way. It was reported recently that Merseyside has increased its recycling by almost 30 per cent in the past ten years, which goes to prove that every effort counts in moves to tackle climate change. Concerns about the environment have been given a worldwide platform over the past decade, and whilst it is now a globally recognised effort, there is still some way to go. As one of the worlds’ leading countries we are duty bound to set an example to others , and as one of the leading cities Liverpool can lead the way. Words: Jenny Morris So let’s start with the basics. What is global warming, and why are people so bothered by it? Will it really affect the way we live, and if so, how? Put simply, global warming is when the earth heats up by rising temperatures. Greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, water vapour, nitrous oxide and methane) trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere which causes the planet’s thermometer to rise. Increased heat means dry riverbeds, forest fires, famine, melting icecaps and climates changing too fast for wildlife to adapt and subsequently dying. Think of the earth as a car with the windows up on a hot summer’s day – roasting, and uncomfortable. The effects of global warming have already taken hold – the magnificent, and gigantic, polar icecaps are melting much faster than estimated, and temperatures are rising just as steadily. Natural changes in the earth’s environment are cyclical, and to be expected. The concern is, however, focused on the speed at which changes are taking place, and the contribution of the human race towards such changes. Pollution caused by humans, such as exhaust fumes, chemicals, waste and used energy, is something we can recognise and start to change. The theme for Liverpool’s Year of the Environment is ‘Our City, Our Planet’, and urges all Liverpudlians to work towards a greener and more sustainable city. What we do as a city can have a big impact on our planet and the first step towards tackling climate change and reducing our carbon footprint starts at home. Working as a family, or indeed with your community, Our City Our Planet provides the perfect basis on which to begin your greener, cleaner life. Simple things such as switching off lights, refilling water bottles, using green transport and buying package-free goods is a fantastic start. Many companies,

communities and schools over Merseyside have thoroughly welcomed the move and hope it will kick-start eco-friendly living as the norm for the region’s residents. Liverpool city council has enlisted the help of its own Green Ambassadors – think of them as lovely Captain Planet figures of the noughties – who all have businesses with fantastic environmental credentials, have set up community initiatives to improve recycling or go to a school that is eco-friendly. The Green Ambassadors help spread the word around the city and endorse green living, making it accessible to all. Companies such as Dimensions - a Liverpool-based print company - have stepped up recycling efforts and developed their own recycling programmes, offering to recycle or recondition exhibition units - or if they are no longer needed then the company will reface it for a charity of your choice. If you have yet to make your home, your business or your lifestyle eco-friendly – then start today. Switch off that television. Walk to work. What does Liverpool One mean to you? Shopping, shopping, shopping? The additional shops to Liverpool's city centre have caused much excitement and retail therapy-induced stampedes over the past year. Flocks of tourists and Liverpudlians have enjoyed the benefits of the fantastic retail outlets day after day for the past 12 months. But then maybe it is Chavasse Park that takes your fancy? Or the string of new eateries that now populates the top level? All of these attributes (and more) came together for the final completion of L1 in October 2008. Toni Naylor takes a look at one of the cityÊs most notable transformations on its first birthday. Words: Toni Naylor

But what has Liverpool One meant for Liverpool?

Being the largest city centre regeneration project in Europe, it has meant (and done) vast amounts for Liverpool. Foremost of which is bringing together the historically famous waterfront and city of Liverpool, to tie the city together again as a whole, thus distinguishing Liverpool as one of the top destinations in the UK. Debates as to Liverpool One's potential growth at this time were hard-coming, but it has exceeded expectations not only within itself but also in allowing Liverpool to regain its status as an iconic, important and thriving location. The past year has been unsurprisingly busy for the complex. A variety of events have continued to draw people to the city to celebrate many aspects of its culture. Many events have used L1 as a venue due to its publicity capacity, awareness and sheer size. Beauty Week, for example, brought thousands of people into the city and L1 itself. These have helped increase the revenue flowing through Liverpool enormously and have in turn, given Liverpool One the status, high quality reputation and success it has today. As a result of this success and fabulousness, store upon store has fought, and is indeed fighting, to be added to the list of retail outlets within the spread of the six districts, vastly increasing shopping capacity. Location is vital, and being in the heart of Liverpool in the biggest city centre rejuvenation project in Europe can only help these businesses throughout the tough times - that we're all feeling - of a worldwide recession. Successful chain stores such as H&M are thriving off the new customer base and their first year of success at Liverpool One has them looking forward to the future. Stephen Jones, H&M store manager says, "Liverpool One is getting better and better as more people are seeing it, this is only going to help us as a store." The grand opening of the second largest Topshop in Europe recently has allowed stores like cult interiors shop, Cath Kidston, to be exposed to this larger customer base as Liverpool One continues to grow. Liverpool One's first year of trading has provided the people of Liverpool and its tourists with yet another cultural benefit to

the city in the form of high fashion retail outlets, as well as bars, restaurants, one ginormous cinema, Chavasse Park, and...well, need I go on? Amongst the many new attributes to the city, it has promoted the success of 2008’s Capital of Culture and been at the forefront of keeping up the momentum so quickly gained from that year. Its first year has been a total success and its reputation and events management have made Liverpool One a nationwide household name. Liverpool is now more of a destination city than it has ever been, and the shopping haven of the North West has brought big name brands to the city, but still remained true to our collective eclectic personality. It effortlessly links the new with the old, contemporary architecture and retail with the beautiful vista of Liverpool’s waterfront, and has proved many naysayers wrong. With a few shops still left to fill the space, we can’t wait to see what will arrive next – if shopping really is a form of therapy then consider me cured. Happy birthday Liverpool One, here’s to many, many more! For more information please visit www.liverpool-one.com

Flying the Flag for

ECO-SCHOOLS ECO-CONSCIOUS pupils at Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School were honoured last month after winning an international award for their environmental work. The girls celebrated having secured their first Eco-Schools Green Flag award.

E

co-Schools, run in this country by the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign, gets schools working towards one of three awards – Bronze, Silver and the prestigious Green Flag, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity. Pupils are the driving force behind the scheme, setting up a committee with representative from across the school community. They then look at various problems, from how much rubbish they throw out to how much electricity they waste, and create an action plan to sort them out. Merchant Taylors’, which has a 25-strong eco-committee, joined the scheme six years ago and has been working towards getting the green flag since getting the silver award three years ago. Geography teacher Cath Mason said: “We joined up to the award because we thought we should be doing more for the environment. “Everyone plays there part by recycling paper, cans and plastic, and we have an eco garden, where we grow our own vegetables and encourage wildlife. “It’s good to have something to aim for and it’s a very prestigious award to show that we’re committed to green issues.” The school even has an eco governor, Vonnie Johnson, and she said: “Changing attitudes is difficult, but we have to keep going. “The resources we have are not a right, but a privilege, and we should treat them as such.” Eco-Schools is an international award programme run in 46 countries around the world, linking more than 40,000 schools, and a number of schools across Merseyside are taking part. One of them is Kew Woods Primary School, which has won a number of eco flags over the years and was awarded its second Green Flag in April last year. Kew Woods’ eco teacher Alison Richardson said: “The world we live in is very important and these children are the future so they need to know how to look after the planet.

“We turned an area of waste land into a nature reserve, which is coming along nicely and is full of wildlife, and our after school eco club is always over-subscribed and the children really enjoy that. “It’s very important to them.” Ainsdale St John’s Primary School, crowned Sefton Eco Champions earlier this year, have an Eco School silver award, and children there have adopted the motto ‘Every little action makes a big difference’.” The school has an Eco Army and has forged links with companies such as United Utilities and Southern Electric to get things like energy saving light bulbs and cut price insulation. Headteacher Lesley Deninson said: “We’re trying to instil in them the attitude that everyone can do something to help, no matter how “It’s about understanding big or small. that our world does not “They are going to have infinite resources and grow up in this world teaching our children that so they realise it’s their responsibility to we can make things better.” look after it.” Marshside Primary, another Sefton Eco Champion, was also awarded a Green Flag in 2007, and headteacher Tony McCoy said: “It’s such an important issue at the school because we are in such a nice environment here and we want to look after that. “All the children really enjoy getting involved in these kinds of issues. “They are very responsive to doing more for the environment.” Churchtown Primary School has achieved Green Flag status four times in recent years, most recently in 2004, and headteacher David Walker said: “Children are very aware of saving both water and electricity. “It’s about understanding that our world does not have infinite resources and teaching our children that we can make things better.” Words: Nick Moreton. GREEN M CHINES

We all know that recycling is an important part that each of us should play in helping to maintain a sustainable environment. But it's so much work, you have to put in extra thought, take extra steps, and in our busy lives there just isn't that much time to spare for something that isn't really an imminent problem. However it is important to break that thought cycle in both you, and your family. Words: Daisy Burton

We can recycle almost anything nowadays, so how come us Brits are lagging behind whilst the rest of Europe is in some kind of recycling Utopia? Germany is famed for its efficient recycling and eco-friendly systems, and has experienced little public unrest compared to that of the UK’s love for complaining when it comes to change. As with everything, the key is to start young – the more a child is used to doing something, the more it becomes a habit and a way of life. Recycling can be fun, educational, creative and lead children to have an interest in the world around them. Leading ecologists, geographers and biologists have to start somewhere after all! Use the following tips to try and break free from procrastination and turn your home into a recycling machine: 1. Have a Meeting - It is always easier to make a lifestyle change when you have the support of family, and even friends from around the area. Set up a meeting with everyone you think might be interested in this initiative. Discuss with everyone what you would like to accomplish, and how to do it. If you can, get everyone to sign a pledge or contract to make at least one small

change in their daily lives. 2. Make it a Game - Things are always more fun when they are a game. Set up a chart, and keep track of how much your family recycles on a weekly basis. Once you reach a certain amount, plan a reward like a weekend trip somewhere fun. 3. Make it Easy - Recycling should be so easy you don't even have to think about it. Have plenty of bins set up, and clearly label them with bright lettering so everyone knows exactly where to throw their rubbish. 4. Have a Cause - Make sure that you constantly remind everyone why you are recycling. It should be more than a habit; it should become a moral obligation to help change the world. That way the message will stick in their minds. 5. Don't Stop - It is easy to recycle in the excitement of starting a new campaign, but after a few months, taking out those extra bins can become a burden nobody wants to bother with. Continue to use the steps above to try and reinvigorate yourself and your troops when spirits flag and remember why you are all doing this. Autumn - time of feasting, foraging and harvesting, and if you're a keen gardener then it's time to think about shutting down for the winter and preparing for spring. It may seem a while away, but a bit of TLC now will ensure you have a garden that is flourishing with life come March.

N

ow we are in October make sure you clean up fallen autumn leaves and fruit regularly and harvest apple and pears for eating or storing. Remember to only store unblemished fruit to prevent decay. We can now pick blackberries and autumn raspberries. Increase your stock for next year by taking hardwood cuttings of gooseberries, grapes and currants, and as the days go colder why not get out your gardening catalogues and order your fruit trees and bushes, making sure that the allocated planting areas are well prepared before planting. The soil will still be warm in the first part of October and newly planted trees will benefit from this. Towards the end of October apply grease bands to the trunks of fruit trees. You can still keep nets or cages over soft fruits to protect them from wildlife and continue harvesting beetroot, carrots and potatoes and the last of the runner beans. Outdoor tomato plants can now be dug up and hung upside down to allow the fruit to ripen. Plant out spring cabbages remembering to protect them, finish planting onion sets for a crop in early to mid- summer. For those of you who own a greenhouse sow lettuce, cress, mustard, and radish in grow bags if you have a cold frame plant, carrots and peas but in mild areas only. Sow sweet peas in the greenhouse for next spring. October is a good time to turn over the soil in empty areas of the vegetable plot as cold weather will improve the soil structure. Once the ground is dug it can be covered with black polythene to prevent new weed growth. Lift and divide herbs and pot them up so that they can be brought in to the kitchen for use in the winter. Basil is particularly tender so bring it into the green house or the conservatory and keep removing the flower heads to promote leafy growth. Finally remove all plant debris from the vegetable plot to avoid the potential threat of pests and diseases. Lift and divide over-crowded perennials or poor flowering plants - this is a great way to increase the stock for next year. As soon as the first frosts arrive lift tubers or rhizomes and store some where dry. Remaining summer bedding plants as their blooms begin to fade are best removed to make way for cheerful winter pansies, wallflowers, primulas, bellis, daisies, forget-me-nots and

GA

violas, remembering to water with recycled water. Plant any new herbaceous perennials for a magnificent show in the summer, making sure to raise any pots or containers on bricks to allow drainage to avoid them sitting in water during the winter. Spend a few hours with the children collecting seeds and berries from trees and shrubs around your garden and sow them immediately. Help the environment by washing and re-using old pots or use bio-degradable pots made from starch. For those of you who like hyacinths in pots for Christmas and new year get them in now for a super show. Last chance to trim deciduous hedges to make them neat and tidy over the winter, prune rose bushes to reduce wind rock in strong winds. October is an ideal time for moving and planting trees, shrubs and climbers, bare rooted stock is available towards the end of this month and is cheaper than containerised stock which is very helpful if you need a lot perhaps for a new hedge or a woodland area. Any leaves collected will go to compost and make excellent organic compost for anywhere in the garden. This month creates the last opportunity to scarify, aerate and top dress your lawn after which apply an autumn lawn feed. Grass seed can still be sown but protect it with some clear polythene, any recent seeded areas can be cut no lower than one inch. If fungi such as toadstools or fairy rings appear it may be a sign that your lawn needs scarifying. A final mow should keep weeds in check until next spring as it is too late to apply weedkiller now. Ponds need to be netted to keep fallen leaves out, while you are at it clear out any weeds or debris making sure you leave it on the side to allow wildlife to escape before you take it to the compost heap. Overgrown marginal plants can just be cut back. In the interest of local wildlife remember to leave water for the birds in a bird bath and make sure that the bird feeder is filled as the winter can be very hard on our feathered friends. Can you spot the 'eco' car?

CLASH TITANS! OF THE

whose marketing departments have gone into overdrive as a new generation of environmentally friendly models have hit the showrooms. Revised gearing, subtle aerodynamic changes and ‘greener’ tyres have all played their part in cars like the VW Blue Motion range, but it’s very much a case of buyer beware as a recent ‘Auto Express’ survey revealed. Evidently, VW’s latest Polo ‘Blue Motion’ will take an extra five years to recoup the additional cost of buying green; unless you are hitting mega mileages every year I think it’s simply too high a price to pay to ease the conscience and lower your environmental motoring impact. And what of the future, especially for the British motor industry, or what there is left of it? A few years ago, MG produced a hybrid TF in conjunction with the Motor Industry Research Association. The TF 160 sported an additional electric motor, increasing its power to an impressive 200PS. If MG Rover hadn’t have gone belly up back in 2005, it would have been a Brit trendsetter, proving that green and fun aren’t necessarily incompatible. That mantle’s now passed to Morgan and Lotus, the former with its epochal Life Car, the latter via the US funded Tesla sports car which Lotus helped design. The Life Car is over £100,000, the Tesla costs around £96,000; what price would you pay to go green bearing that in mind? Is it a case of the richer you are, the greener you can afford to be? Not necessarily. My opening question seemed like a no brainer until you realise the expense of building the new Prius and the fact that once an aged Moggie is built it can last a good forty years or so with a sympathetic owner. Don’t even get me started on the fatuous scrappage scheme!

Take a look at both these cars. Now, spot the ÂgreenerÊ one; if you instantly chose the Toyota Prius, itÊs entirely understandable, but think again, advises Stephen Rome who ponders our attitudes to ÂecoÊ motoring. How ‘green’ is the average British motorist? That’s not just ‘green’ as in environmentally aware, but ‘green’ as in gullible, too. A friend of mine’s a car salesman and his interesting tale tells its own story … now, evidently more and more customers are asking ‘what is this car’s CO2 output?’ rather than the old ‘what’s its top speed?’ or ‘how fast to sixty?’ That said, there’s still a lot of confusion about how to drive ‘green’ – manufacturers are bringing out new models with trendy new names by the month and while there’s now a clear financial case to be made for driving a cleaner, greener car … the problem is which one to buy? Because it’s obviously no longer simply a case of choosing between petrol and diesel; cars badged ‘eco motive’, ‘blue motion’, ‘eco netic’, and ‘clear tec’ are all vying for buyers’ attention - and then there are the Japanese hybrids, Toyota’s Prius shorthand for eco motoring to many and that’s before you consider dual fuel cars, electric cars, and soon, diesel hybrids. It all begs the obvious question: what are the fundamental differences between them, and how do you prioritise the model that’s best for your driving style? Current frontrunners in the green stakes are the Japanese, Europeans and Americans with the Koreans and Chinese waiting in the wings with some very interesting developments. And where are the British – quite … but I'll address that later. So back to some recent developments from the big players

GREEN LIVING For too long we have shirked responsibility for the world around us – for many of us, it is easier to think ‘what difference will I make?’ than to take action and start to make changes to our lifestyle. Over the past decade, people have started to sit up and take notice and now the environment and our effect on it is the global hot topic, and hot potato. Rather than wasting time passing responsibility and blame, it’s time to do our small bit for the environment, but as you’ll discover there are some people going that extra mile to safeguard our future and our planet. Jenny Morris speaks to Liverpool’s Green Ambassadors, K2 Architects, about their work and views on green living. How important is it that architects now consider sustainability and eco-friendly methods in current design?

It’s predicted that 20 years from now the global population will have risen to 8bn resulting in a 50% increase in energy consumption and rising costs. We have to do everything we can now to limit the impact this will have on our everyday lives. By getting on board now we are ensuring that as these challenges face us in the future we are ready to deal with them. By doing something as simple as designing homes that are cheaper to heat we can make a big difference.

Properties 20 years from now – will the world of 2029 be populated with fully green homes/offices? How plausible is that?

It’s not really a question of can we do it - we have to do it! The Government is doing everything it can to ensure that all new homes are zero carbon by 2016. The existing building stock will be considerably more challenging, but starting in March anyone with the ability to generate their own electricity can sell it back to their provider at three times the price it would cost the provider to sell traditional electricity to them, meaning that fitting solar power to an existing home really begins to make financial sense.

Are eco-homes accessible to all and something we could all aim towards in the future?

We will really need to look at our lifestyles. Since 1990 when people truly began to talk about green issues, we’ve made real advances in making our homes more energy efficient. But these achievements have been offset quite considerably by the fact there are a lot more homes in the UK than there were 20 years ago that use a lot more electricity for heating & electronics than we used to. So we can't simply rely on improvements in technology to solve our problems, we need to think about how we consume as individuals. Simple things like turning off lights, turning down the heating, switching off appliances, will make a

huge difference in the long run…

What do you have to consider when designing eco friendly buildings?

For us it is about doing the basics brilliantly. A well designed and constructed building is all in the detail. In the future we will think of things like wind turbines and solar power in the same way we currently think about our boilers, replacing them every 20 years or so as necessary. However the building itself will probably last for hundreds of years so it’s important that we design it right. We have delivered eco-homes with five star ratings with very little reliance on anything more than rainwater, recycling and biomass heating.

Are eco-friendly designs a more complex task for you than regular work? Not for us. We’ve been involved in the design and construction of eco-homes for over ten years. It is challenging, but over the years we have established good relationships with a network of advisors and manufacturers that are among the best in the industry.

You’ve recently become the only architects to carry the title of Green Ambassador for Liverpool’s construction sector – congrats – what does that title mean to you?

It’s a fantastic achievement. We’ve worked really hard to establish our green credentials. But we have clients who appreciate and support our vision and in the end it’s they who are the real green ambassadors. We simply supply the vision, foresight and tools that enable them to pioneer the changes that we all really need to make in our lives right now.
