The owners of the property, Miller Trucking, hired area artists Zach Abbott and Graham Masters to make the transformation. The design was selected by businesses near the intersection and the finished art piece has enhanced the streetscape tremendously. There are plans to turn more utility boxes into public art displays in the future. Corner of Main St. and First Ave. NW
and Sagewood Sculptures 8 Reunion Two of Airdrie’s northwest neighbourhoods boast sculptures for all to enjoy. Both are by Cochrane bronze sculptors Don and Shirley Begg. The Reunion statue honours the Bowen family, which originally farmed the land. The image of the little girl and the picnic basket reflects the Bowens’ family values, and recalls the fact that they were often seen enjoying picnics together in the early 1900s. Reunion Blvd. and Reunion Gateway NW The Sagewood statue’s theme was chosen because of Airdrie residents’ love of soccer and the neighbourhood’s close proximity to the Monklands soccer fields. The statue of a young soccer player is based on a local boy named Gordie, and the Airdrie Soccer Association logo is immortalized on the statue. Sagewood Blvd. and Sagewood Dr. SW
Street Art Project 9 Main Discover the work of hundreds of Airdrie residents along a 300-foot mural on an empty lot. The Main Street Art Project combines the talents of more than 30 artists and 1,100 eager volunteers. Each panel of the mural contains a curving grey line which represents the pathways that connect Airdrie residents to each other. The Main Street Art Project is a temporary exhibit. It will remain at its current location until construction begins at the site. Centre Ave. and Main St.
Public Library 10 Airdrie Throughout the year, Airdrie Public Library (APL) plays host to local, regional and travelling art, with six exhibitions a year of approximately 70 pieces each. With more than 370 visitors coming through the library’s doors each day, the APL art gallery is an important cultural stop in the community. 111, 304 Main St. S

Place 15 Genesis In the windows of Genesis Place, near the indoor soccer fields, discover the stained glass work Out of the Blue by Heinz and Patricia Demes. Whimsical in design, it features the contemporary treatment of images on vibrant, colourful modern glass, created with classic techniques and modern construction. While at Genesis Place, check out the metal tiles created in Phase One by Airdrie school children to establish a lasting legacy. Be sure to stand back; the tiles represent a panoramic view of the landscape of Airdrie. 800 East Lake Blvd. NE
Church Theatre 16 Bert The process is underway to select and install a major public art piece at the theatre. The installation should be completed by January 2015. Note: the recently expanded lobby area is a work of art in itself – check out the mood lighting! 1010 East Lake Blvd. NE

STORY BY COREY WINE | PHOTOS BY SERGEI BELSKI
have been looking for Mexican food in Calgary and Airdrie for more than 15 years. Mexican food is the BEST FOOD ON EARTH and after moving here from Anaheim, Calif., I did not understand why there appeared to be no such thing. I have heard people say that we’re just too far north, but I think that’s a cop-out. We have East Indian, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Italian … pretty much every ethnicity except Mexican. Even Jeff Garcia, former quarterback for the Stamps, opened a Mexican restaurant in Calgary that lasted mere months. Over the last decade and a half, the popular Alberta vacation destinations seemed to be Cuba and Phoenix; that is until a couple of years ago, when I started hearing about more and more people taking their holidays in Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Cabo, Playa del Carmen and Mazatlán. Well, it is my belief that these ‘newly discovered’ destinations have spawned an outbreak of Mexican food cravings and Airdrionians are eager for more. Within the last year, we have seen the arrival of an onslaught of new and exciting Mexican food establishments.

THANK YOU – Airdrie finally gets it! That is why when Eat Play Stay publisher Sherry Shaw-Froggatt asked me to check out the newest Mexican restaurant additions to our city, I was totally up for the task! My first visit was to Quesadas. Wow, what a treat! I have always kept a motto: When food and drink are so good, they make you cuss, it’s a good thing! Well, when I saw that Quesadas had an increíblemente enorme burrito, I knew I was in a happy place. I went with the Ancho Seasoned Pork Burrito, extra guacamole. (Avocados RULE!) Perfect combination of Ancho Seasoned Pork and rice cilantro – lime rice, black beans, lettuce, cheese, sour cream and salsa. My fellow gourmand went for the chili-lime shrimp burrito. “A shrimp in every bite … that’s a good thing!” was the blunt verdict! The staff was very friendly and country music hummed in the background. (After all, we are still in Alberta.) Rating: ★★★+ Next was Costa Vida. I went for the fish tacos. You can really sum up a place by how good its fish tacos are and they nailed it! I accompanied the tacos with rice and black beans and grabbed a side of guacamole. My invitee at Costa Vida was Sherry and
if you know Sherry, then you know that she went for the Mango Chicken Salad – she’s hooked! It’s what keeps her coming back and now, I will be reeled in again for more fish tacos. Rating:★★★+ Mucho Burrito was just that … mucho! I went for the Mucho Burrito and it was YUGE. (The cool way to say “huge” when something is HUGE!) I delved into the massive Carne Asada – rice, beans, guacamole, cilantro, jalapeno sauce, sour cream and green-pepper concoction – and it took me a half-hour to eat it. The ambience had a great Tex-Mex appeal. When I go back, I have to pick up some of the Hotter-Than-Hell Hot Sauce. (Again, cuss words with food are a good thing!) Rating: ★★★ Next on the agenda – Tacos Puerto Vallarta. Ay, chihuahua! We’re talking genuine Mexican cuisine, and it is exquisito! This is the closest taste of Mexico that you will find here. The restaurant is decked out in rugs and sombreros and there’s mariachi music playing in the background. I went for the Dos Tacos Carnitas (two pork tacos) and a Chorizo Quesadilla, accompanied by a Jarritos Mango Soda. It all tasted so authentic. I closed my eyes for a minute and it felt as if I was back in Cancun … except for the heavy winter jacket I was still wearing. Tacos Puerto Vallarta is still very new and I encourage all Mexican food appreciators out there to check it out. Rating: ★★★★ On to Original Joe’s. I’m a big fan of OJ’s and its diverse menu. I also love that you can pick from a choice of side orders. No more spending $2.50 for a side of gravy! I went there for the Long Beach Fish Tacos – blackened mahi mahi seared in a light chili-lime sauce, avocado, lettuce, roma tomato, green onion, cilantro (you can never, ever have too much cilantro) and the
house chipotle sauce, folded into lightly grilled flour tortillas. One syllable explains this dish: mmmmmmmmmm! Go get some today, but remember, it is an 18-and-over establishment. Rating: ★★★+ Last but not least on my radar was The Woods Restaurant at Woodside Golf Course for some Sockeye Salmon Fish Tacos! Three East Coast sockeye salmon and grilled soft flour tortillas with chipotle mayo, avocado mango relish, sweet-and-sour coleslaw, jalapeno jack cheese and a side of rice – need I say more? The pico de gallo had a nice spicy kick to it, just the way I like it. The Woods is open year round, so you don’t have to wait for the snow to melt to have a reason to go to Woodside Golf Course! Rating: ★★★★ All in all, Airdrionians are pretty fortunate to have more and more Mexican food establishments popping up every year. What I will be looking for is a greater variety of Mexican food specialties that I miss, such as enchiladas, flautas, tostadas, tamales, barbacoa, chile relleno, chimichangas, huevos rancheros, machaca and chorizo burritos and empanadas. The last place I have a review for is my kitchen! The REAL secrets of authentic Mexican food have already been mentioned: plenty of avocados, refried beans, mucho cheese, pico de gallo, Mexican rice and a good cup of chopped cilantro. Give them a try and you, too, can have a table full of friends and family cussing up a storm about your food. I can’t wait to brew up my Frikken Spicy Big Balls Albondigas (Mexican meatballs) soup! Rating: ★★★★★ ¡Hasta luego!

Divine Dining
Foodie List The
EPS editor shares her top picks
Every year we make a list of our favourite bites (and sips). As Airdrie grows, we are blessed with more and more delicious flavours.
The Pickled Radish Hey, we love all the sushi and especially the spicy Korean bulgogi at Zenbu but we always have to get a side of pickled radish!
The Flaming Saganaki Nothing says OPA! like ouzo poured over cheese and lit on fire at Paros.
The Grilled Salsiccia The homemade sausage sautéed with peppers at Rosa Rossa (formerly Ilforno) is a great starter. Or do what we do and combine it with the Caprese Salad for an awesome mixed plate.
The Sangria and Tapas Rico’s has the coolest vibe in the city, with plates made for sharing. The No. 1 date-night choice.
The Paddle Rico’s
In a pub that serves more than 80 types of beer from around the world, how on earth do you choose just one? You don’t! At Pour Beer Market, you choose four, five-ounce servings instead!
The Salads A restaurant that specializes in salads? Yes! And at Chopped Leaf you can wash it all down with fresh fruit water.
The Rooibos Latte Because at Good Earth Coffeehouse, it comes with local art on the wall, live music on the weekends and deck chairs on the patio. Zenbu
Salted Caramel Gelato We are slowly working our way through all the flavours at Amato Gelato….
The Options Pick your protein, your flavours and your level of spicy goodness at Noodlebox.
The Pizza Sophie’s Pizza – finally, pizza for grown-ups.
Maple Bacon Cupcakes Okay, we admit it, ANY flavor of cupcake from Avenue Cakery and Bakeshoppe!
The Fish Pakora Think Indian fish and chips. Spicy mint chutney dip at Taj. Food nirvana.
Good Things… Taj

AIRscares
Iron Horse Park From the big (yet miniature!) attraction for all ages – a scenic 1.6-kilometre interpretive journey aboard one of the park’s 1/8th scale locomotives – to the passionate volunteers that make it all happen, there is lots to love about Iron Horse Park. Little ones will enjoy exploring and climbing the new largerthan-life wooden train on site, and parents will appreciate its location within easy viewing distance from anywhere in the park. A snack bar, housed in a full-size CPR station replica, plus picnic tables and a relaxed setting make family outings here easy. The park is open Sundays, weather permitting, from Victoria Day weekend through Thanksgiving, as well as for special events such as the 2014 Alberta Summer Games and ARTember. Park admission is free but each journey costs $3 cash per person. Ride packages are also available. Children under three ride free but must be accompanied by an adult.
The Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie hosts two great Halloweenthemed events in October, with ghoulish fun for both young and old souls. The ever-popular AIRscares Haunted Attraction offers up a chilling experience for anyone who dares brave its haunted hidden mazes and spinetingling surprises. The full experience is approximately 10 minutes. Located in the former RCMP station off Edmonton Trail, this event is intended for adults and older children only. No one under the age of eight is permitted, and children age eight to 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. For families with younger children, AIRscares Family Friendly offers an all-ages experience that includes a walk through the fun house with games and activities. This is a completely separate experience from the AIRscares Haunted House, with no access to the main attraction, so parents can rest assured their little ones will still be able to sleep at night! Date, location and ticket price information for both events available closer to the season at airscares.com

earn from the certified experts at Airdrie Edge Gymnastics Club this summer! The club offers week-long summer camps in July and August for all ages, in addition to different recreational core programs throughout the year. Enjoy gymnastics every day of the week!
Expert Instruction, Safety First Airdrie Edge Gym Club’s successful Women’s Artistic and Trampoline and Tumbling competitive programs have seen athletes compete at provincial, national and international levels, with several members representing Canada on both the senior and youth team at World Championships, World Cups and World Age Group Championships since 2001. The club teaches basic and beginner movements along with safety skills that help with co-ordination, balance, strength, agility and flexibility. Intermediate and advanced gymnasts build on the abilities they already have to master complex and powerful skills. Airdrie Edge gymnasts progress safely and quickly by learning correct techniques, good judgment and sound practice habits. The club is equipped with the latest equipment and safety matting, accommodating early-learner gymnasts as well as world-class athletes.
Summer Fun The club offers weekly programs for children in all age groups, as well as skill-specific summer classes.
Evening Drop-In Aimed at ages 15 to adult, this program is offered throughout the summer for those trying gymnastics for the first time, branching out from another sport or building skills for fun and fitness.
Acrobatics Gymnasts ages 10 and up can join Aerial Arts or Parkour Ninjas to practice acrobatics in the air on one of the club’s many sprung surfaces, or while running up the wall.
Jumpgym This intermediate to advanced camp for students ages 10 and up adds partner skills and group routines to the gymnastics mix.
Megagym Aimed at ages six to 12, Megagym breaks down the barriers between gymnastics sports. Children attend from Monday to Friday for 4.5 hours each day to practice gymnastics, tumbling, trampoline, acrobatics and the freerunning skills of Parkour. The program focuses on fun as well as skill development, both new and existing. Young gymnasts progress quickly in Megagym. Children who attend this session after one of the regular sessions can often master skills with which they had trouble previously.
Minigym Children ages two to five are invited to work on the same apparatus as the bigger kids, but with adaptations for age, size and interests. Minigym classes are one hour, Monday to Friday. A parent joins each child under the age of four, making the experience as personal and interesting as possible.

Receiving supplies by train, Airdrie grew to be a substantial size and, after much paperwork, was granted village status Sept. 9, 1909.
