Airdrie’s historical highlights W

ith Airdrie set to celebrate Canada’s 150th birth in July 2017, it’s interesting to note that the city’s past is chock-full of interesting people, places and things. Airdrie was founded in 1889 when Calgary-Edmonton Railway contracting engineer William McKenzie named the stopping point after his hometown of Airdrie, Scotland. It wasn’t until 1901, however, when brothersin-law A.E. Bowers and William Croxford set to work building the first barn and house, located on the north side of Centre Avenue and the east side of Main Street, that Airdrie became a place of residence. Following the construction of the Bowers and Croxford residences, R.J. Hawkey saw fit to open the first school in 1904, aptly named Airdrie School. With the population booming, W.F. Edwards drove his horse and buggy into Airdrie in 1907, becoming the first doctor to serve the area. Airdrie’s growth showed no signs of stopping, and in 1909, with a population of around 250 people, it was officially declared a village. Industry in Airdrie also saw growth, with the first grain elevators built in 1916. However, Airdrie and its residents were to be met by a deadly foe, the Spanish flu pandemic. The first bout of flu flourished in Airdrie in 1918, and with the ever-growing mortality rate, Edwards saw fit to convert the Old Hotel into a quarantine hospital. When the pandemic ceased in 1919, Edwards continued to serve as a physician in Airdrie until his death in 1940 from a staph infection. Looking to the future, the first electricity was used in the village in 1928. Airdrie continued to shine, and in 1959 one of its most recognized landmarks, the Airdrie Water Tower, was constructed and called the ‘Horton Watersphere.’ In 1974, with a population of 3,897 people, Airdrie became a town. And in 1985, with a population of 10,631, Airdrie was declared the 14th city of Alberta. What will be Airdrie’s legacy on Canada’s 200th birthday? Only time will tell.

Iron Horse Park

A train lover’s dream come true, Iron Horse Park has miniature trains, track and landscape to represent the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) from the prairies to the coast. Take the 1.6-kilometre interpretive journey aboard one of the 1/8th scale diesel or steam locomotives at the park and get a feeling for what the railway was like in Western Canada during the pioneer days. The rail journey takes visitors over hills, across trestles and through tunnels across the varied landscape. The park is a work in progress, with additional structures, features, and track being added yearly. In 2017, the park welcomes 0.5 km of additional track. Situated at 820 Railway Gate, Iron Horse Park is open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting, from Victoria Day weekend through Thanksgiving (May 21 to Oct. 8, 2017). The park will also be open on Canada Day. Check the website or Facebook page for the latest run day information. Admission to the park is free but each journey costs $3 (cash, credit, or debit) per person. Children under age three ride free but must be accompanied by an adult. Except for service animals, pets are not permitted at the park. ironhorsepark.net

C E L E B R AT I O N S

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BY SARA LESTER-VANDERHEIDE

C

CANADA!

anada celebrates 150 years in 2017, and the city of Airdrie is pulling out all the stops. Celebrations officially kicked off on April 20, when Airdrie’s Nose Creek Valley Museum hosted Reel Canada’s National Canadian Film Day with the classic Anne of Green Gables. In honour of Canada’s momentous birthday, the City of Airdrie’s parks department has incorporated red and white into the annual flower beds. Among them are 750 Canada 150 tulips (each flower is both red and white), along with petunias, geraniums, snapdragons, canna lilies, rudbeckia, pansies, ipomoea, ornamental grasses, daylilies and dracaena. Taking place in June is one of two projects being spearheaded by Creative Airdrie Society. As a board, Creative Airdrie decided they couldn’t let Canada’s birthday go unnoticed, and as such, they began scouting out ways to participate. Enter Sharing Dance. Canada’s National Ballet School is hosting Sharing Dance Canada 2017, a free program aimed to teach citizens, young and old, a dance that is to be performed flash-mob style across the country beginning on June 2. “The National Ballet School has chosen a handful of key cities that will be hosting this project,” says Deanna Hunter, chair of the Creative Airdrie board of directors. An alumnus of the National Ballet School has been designated to teach each of the chosen cities. Calgary was chosen as one of those cities, but the representative for Calgary lives in Airdrie. She approached Creative Airdrie to ask if the city would like to be involved, and the rest is history. “People across Canada are learning a dance that was specifically designed to showcase Canadian culture,” says Hunter. “The Airdrie flash mob will take place sometime in early June, and then the dancers are going to dance in the Calgary one.” Rehearsal videos – for anyone who would like to join in – can be found on The National Ballet School’s Sharing Dance Canada 2017 web page. There will, of course, be the Airdrie staples on Canada Day, July 1: the parade and fireworks. For the parade enthusiasts, previous guests in-

8

cluding The Stampede Outrider Showband will be back entertaining on the parade route. New additions to the parade include the Jurassic Mini Monster Truck and The Olde West Raiders, among other special guests. The parade, which in 2016 alone attracted approximately 40,000 spectators, is a great chance for Airdrians and visitors to get together in celebration of Canada’s birthday. Following the parade, a family friendly event will take place at Chinook Winds Park starting at 3 p.m. Katavállo Entertainment Group will contribute acts for the concert stage, The Olde West Raiders will perform, and food trucks, balloons and henna art will round out the event at Chinook Winds. Something sure to dazzle is the ever-popular fireworks display. Fireworks will take place at Chinook Winds at approximately 10:45 p.m., weather permitting. As for why almost three years of planning went into the Canada 150 parade and fireworks, Stacey Watts, Airdrie Parades and Fireworks director of media, has an enthusiastic answer. “Along with Canada’s 150, the Airdrie Parades is celebrating its 50th anniversary, so why not pull out all the stops and showcase Airdrie and Canada with a big event?” Finally, with the patriotic spirit still going strong, Creative Airdrie will be participating in the Canada 150 Mosaic, a Canada-wide public art project that will leave beautiful mosaics in hundreds of cities across Canada. Each city is depicted on a train car, and if all the mosaics were ever all lined up, they would show Canada. From Sept. 15 to 17, 400 citizens of Airdrie will come to workshops, tasked with painting a 4x4 square that will eventually be put together to resemble the community. When the mosaic is completed, it will be donated to the city to be installed in a public place. With a never-ending list of ways to celebrate, Canada’s 150th birthday is shaping up to be its biggest party yet.

Date night is every night at First & Vine so come and check out the oldest (1905) house in Airdrie that is now home to the award-winning freshest takes on cuisine. Great food, high-end service and ambience combine to make Hayloft in Airdrie a restaurant destination for locals and visitors alike. Owner Hoan Nguyen is proud of the restaurant’s seasonal menu, which changes in accordance with the fresh ingredients, sourced as locally as possible. For example, the restaurant sources its chicken and pork from farms in Beiseker and Carstairs and fresh beef from Airdrie’s Hanson Ranches. Watch for local duck on the menu for summer.

This freshness, combined with Hayloft’s commitment to preparing everything – from bread to dessert to sauces – in house, adds to the quality and wholesomeness of all the items on the menu. “If you are really thinking about what you are eating and what you are putting in your body, that’s what we care about,” says Nguyen. A new brunch/lunch menu just launched in May and diners can look forward to an always evolving selection of menu items for dinner to complement each season. Hayloft has earned accolades from across the country – making The Globe and Mail’s top five new restaurants in Alberta and named “one to watch” on the Canada Top 100. Busy Airdrie families have a new way of dealing with dinner. Social Supper, open since December 2016, saves customers loads of time by doing all the advance work necessary for a healthy family meal. Shopping, food prep and cleanup is all taken care of – clients just assemble their nutritious meals onsite, then take them home to cook and enjoy. Social Supper is located on Kingsview Boulevard and the menu – filled with fresh ingredients that are often locally sourced – changes frequently. Kaidy Morgan, the store’s owner, has created a clean, trendy atmosphere and is one of the friendliest, hardest-working entrepreneurs out there. She

Yes, wholesome food at a drive-thru. Meeting up for drinks? Sorso has a large shareables menu. Why not order some nachos or bacon-wrapped-and-stuffed pickles? Belly-up to the bar and sip some wine from their extensive selection or grab a booth and enjoy one of their many cocktails. When the sun is shining there’s no better

place to be than relaxing on Sorso’s patio and enjoying a cold draught beer ... at Sorso they really do have it all Airdrians and their guests now have access to a huge variety of craft beer, thanks to Thumbprint Craft Beer Market. Located on MacKenzie Way, the boutique beer store has about 400 varieties of beer, from IPAs to stouts, all sourced from small breweries, many of which are situated in the region. Kara and Dave Fulton, the owners, have created a unique store with a cool vibe, and are super friendly and knowledgeable about what they have to offer. In addition to the bottled beer, of which customers can purchase just singles to be able to taste a variety before choosing a favourite, Thumbprint’s on-tap growler bar gives clients a chance to try beers they typically couldn’t sample without going to a brewery. “We wanted to bring the brewery to the customer,” says Kara, noting Thumbprint is focused on sourcing hard-to-find beers. The couple is also looking to work with local breweries, such as the Calgary-based Dandy Brewing Company (which has a local connection in Matt Gaetz, one of the partners in the microbrewery). The Fultons feel when it comes to beer, local is often best.

Simply better.

Casual fine dining at The Woods Restaurant & Patioh! at Woodside Golf Course is getting even better this season. Chef Li Luo and Jaimie Dachy, food and beverage director at the popular restaurant, have been inspired by the flavours of fresh herbs and artisan greens and are creating space at Woodside to grow their own. “I am a huge gardener … and I wanted to bring that freshness,” says Dachy. “And Chef is really excited about it.” Open daily for lunch and dinner, The Woods has an expansive menu offering so many delicious options that choosing one will be the hardest thing you do all day. Try one of their gourmet grill cheese sandwiches, and be sure to complement it with the roasted red pepper bisque – it makes the perfect dip! Reservations are recommended, especially when the sun is shining as the outdoor patio at Woodside is second to none! Special occasions call for Sunday brunch, something for which The Woods is famous.

irdrie is also home to the Avenue Cakery & Bakeshoppe – and you will discover just why Deb Macleod has more than 5,000 likes on Facebook … her cakes, cupcakes, squares, cookies and cinnamon buns are coveted, craved and clamoured over. We think she could win Cake Boss hands down! Rose Rosse Ilforno offers Airdrie’s only authentic Italian cuisine at its tucked-away location on Kingsview Boulevard. Upstairs, it’s fine dining with an emphasis on fresh ingredients including pastas, succulent steak, veal and seafood. But the secret is to call ahead to owner Sal Monna and say “Sal, feed me” and let him – together with wife Anna Marie – prepare a feast from the kitchen. From luscious tiramisu to pillow-soft gnocchi and perfectly balanced tomato sauce, Anna Marie’s cooking will have you saying “bellisimo.” Peppercorns is one of Airdrie’s fave spots for that special night out and with Airdrie’s only waterfront patio, it is the ideal place to treat yourself. A new menu launched this May – the must-have faves are still there (Lobster Balinese) but chef Umesh has added some intriguing new dishes such as Moroccan-spiced Alberta lamb with a chickpea cassoulet and a crab-and-spinach gratin. Mmmm – we love inspired chefs! The best takeout/delivery pizza in Airdrie? We vote for Sophies Pizza for their hand-formed Greek-style pizzas with only the freshest ingredients including salami from Valbella Meats, fromscratch sauce and even a healthy flax crust. Thai Charm provides authentic Thai food with fresh-made sauces and family recipes. Try their amazing salad roles and the Drunken Noodles. Now with new owners, you can also get a full Chinese menu plus they now offer delivery! R U R A L R O OTS Airdrie Pro Rodeo

With a rich farming and ranching heritage, Airdrie celebrates rural life with a variety of popular annual events.

Western Ways Airdrie and District Agricultural Society

Founded in 1909, the Airdrie and District Agricultural Society (ADAS) is a family friendly organization dedicated to promoting agriculture as well as a healthy relationship between rural and urban communities. A dynamic non-profit organization with a diverse membership base, ADAS has a history of successful community contributions, promoting education, business, sport and family fun in Airdrie and area. In addition to spearheading and supporting a variety of community projects, ADAS organizes and hosts a number of popular events that connect Airdrie’s strong rural roots with the thriving urban centre it has now become. Highlights include a ranch-hand competition in July that showcases life on a working ranch; a fall fair in August; as well as a spring seeding demo in May and an old-time harvest event in September. airdrieagsociety.com

Airdrie Pro Rodeo

Get up close to the action at the Airdrie Pro Rodeo, one of the largest 10 rodeos in Canada and the longest-standing athletic event in Airdrie. The event attracts more than 10,000 visitors, volunteers and participants each year. The annual five-day event is organized by the Airdrie Rodeo Ranch Association, a volunteer group of passionate community members, and offers fans the opportunity to see world-class athletes in an intimate and light-hearted atmosphere. The rodeo’s roots date back to July 1, 1967, when the Airdrie Lions Club organized a gymkhana and parade in celebration of Canada’s 100th birthday. In fact, the first Canada Day parade was also part of the celebration in 1967 and was or-

ganized by the rodeo committee for many years. Today, the event includes a pro rodeo (with bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc, tie down roping, steer wrestling, team roping and barrel racing), junior rodeo (with mutton busting, sheep scramble, calf scramble, wild horse riding, peewee barrel racing and junior barrel racing), cabaret and children’s activities. A short drive from Airdrie at the rodeo grounds 6.5 kilometres west on Highway 567, the event takes place June 28 to July 2 in 2017. New this year, the rodeo kicks off June 28 with Bull Riding Bonanza. airdrieprorodeo.net

Art of the Harvest

The Airdrie and District Agricultural Society is proud to host this event 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 23 (in 2017) welcoming visitors to discover the Art of the Harvest. Pioneer Acres (Irricana)

Travel back in time at this family friendly museum located just 20 minutes east of Airdrie, where volunteers work hard to collect, restore, maintain and demonstrate the artifacts once used by the pioneers of early Alberta. With 50 acres of land and more than a dozen buildings to explore, there is always much to do at Pioneer Acres. Discover how many of the conveniences we take for granted today simply didn’t exist in the early 1900s. Learn about the tractors, tools and machinery used during the early days of farming in the area, and peruse the displays of antique trucks, furniture and gas pumps, as well as the working grain cleaner, 1905 schoolhouse, blacksmith and wheelwrights shop. Enjoy dioramas on the family life of early settlers, including a fully equipped kitchen, a music room and a well-stocked General Store. Feature 2017 events, such as the Spring Tractor Pull (May 27) and Steam and Stationary Engines

(Sept. 9-10), highlight one or more areas of the museum. Pioneer Acres’ main event of the year is the Annual Show and Reunion (Aug. 11-13 in 2017), which has virtually every piece of museum equipment running, and many outside exhibitors bringing displays, equipment, crafts and more. The 2017 show will highlight Canadian Makes of Tractors and Equipment, in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. The show – where history really does come to life – will be bigger than ever, featuring a narrated parade to demonstrate the evolution of life through eras of time. The parade will begin with pioneers arriving with ox carts and horsepower to work the prairie, then show movement to the steam era, then to power and the more modern equipment of today. Incorporated into the parade will be grain trucks (from early years to more recent), a threshing machine, a cook car and a bunk car, used when pioneers would work together in crews to farm the land, moving from farm to farm. Another highlight of the show will be a calliope, a colourful musical organ in a horsedrawn wagon. Please visit the website for more details closer to the event. The museum is open daily from May through September. Admission is by cash only; no debit or credit cards are accepted. pioneeracres.ab.ca
