Preserving Airdrie’s history
F
ounded in 1889, Airdrie has a rich history of settlers and railways. Starting out as a stop destination for the Calgary and Edmonton Railway Company train that delivered mail because of Nose Creek, soon buildings were built along the railway with workers living nearby to care for the train. Before long, general stores, blacksmith shops and a school were built to service the establishing families and growing number of people travelling to this tiny hamlet to begin a new life. Airdrie was granted village status in 1909, became a town in 1974, and by 1985, with a population of 10,631, was declared the 14th city of Alberta. Today, it has a population of approximately 65,000.
Iron Horse Park A train lover’s dream come true, Iron Horse Park has miniature trains, track and landscape to represent the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) from the prairies to the coast. Take the 1.6-kilometre interpretive journey aboard one of the 1/8th scale diesel or steam locomotives at the park and get a feeling for what the railway was like in Western Canada during the pioneer days. The rail journey takes visitors over hills, across trestles and through tunnels across the varied landscape. Additional structures, features, and track are added regularly. Situated at 820 Railway Gate, Iron Horse Park is open Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., weather permitting, from Victoria Day weekend through Thanksgiving (May 20 to Oct. 7 in 2018). The park will also be open on Canada Day. Check the website or Facebook page for the latest run day information. Admission to the park is free but each journey costs $3 (cash, credit, or debit) per person. Ticket bundles of eight for $20 and 25 for $50 are also available. Children under age three ride free but must be accompanied by an adult. Except for service animals, pets are not permitted at the park. ironhorsepark.net

R U R A L R O OTS Airdrie is home to a number of activities that celebrate its rich agricultural heritage
Western lifestyle Airdrie and District Agricultural Society Founded in 1909, the Airdrie and District Agricultural Society (ADAS) is a family friendly organization dedicated to promoting agriculture as well as a healthy relationship between rural and urban communities. A dynamic non-profit organization with a diverse membership base, ADAS has a history of successful community contributions, promoting education, business, sport and family fun in Airdrie and area. In addition to spearheading and supporting a variety of community projects, ADAS organizes and hosts a number of popular events that connect Airdrie’s strong rural roots with the thriving urban centre it has now become. Highlights include a ranch-hand competition in July that showcases life on a working ranch; an old-time harvest in September which also features a farm safety demonstration; as well as a spring seeding demo in May. airdrieagsociety.com
Airdrie Pro Rodeo One of the largest 10 rodeos in Canada and the longest-standing athletic event in Airdrie, the Airdrie Pro Rodeo brings spectators at the edge of their seats. The five-day event attracts more than 10,000 visitors, volunteers and participants each year. Organized by the Airdrie Rodeo Ranch Association, a volunteer group of passionate community members, the event offers fans the opportunity to see world-class athletes in an intimate and light-hearted atmosphere. The rodeo’s roots date back to July 1, 1967, when the Airdrie Lions Club organized a gymkhana and parade in celebration of Canada’s 100th birthday. In fact, the first Canada Day parade was also part of the celebration in 1967 and was organized by the rodeo committee for many years. Today, the event includes a pro rodeo (with bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc, tie down roping, steer wrestling, team roping and barrel racing) and junior rodeo (with mutton busting, sheep scramble, calf scramble, wild horse riding, peewee barrel racing and junior barrel racing). New in 2018, enjoy watching the mini broncs! Also offered are children’s activities, food trucks, beer gardens, evening entertainment and camping. (Note there are no dogs allowed on grounds.) A short drive from Airdrie at the rodeo grounds 6.5 kilometres west on Highway 567, the rodeo takes place June 28 to July 2 in 2018. airdrieprorodeo.net
Art of the Harvest The Airdrie and District Agricultural Society is proud to host this event 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 22 (in 2018), welcoming visitors to discover the Art of the Harvest. Horse teams and vintage equipment are used to harvest the grain planted during the organization’s old-time spring seeding event in May. This informational event, which also includes a farm safety demonstration with interactive displays and much more, takes place at Airdrie Ag Park on Big Hill Springs Road (Highway 567) just three kilometres west of Airdrie, offers something for the very small to the very tall, and for the city dweller to those with rural roots. Note: this event is weather dependent; be sure to check for updates online. airdrieagsociety.com
