Welcome to ARTember

Creative Airdrie is excited to present to you and your family the 3rd annual ARTember festival. This 17 day city-wide celebration of the arts just keeps surprising us with the energy and enthusiasm from our growing community. Arts and culture are a key component to creating a viable, sustainable and interesting place to call home. Without the arts, think of living in a black and white world with no colour. In other words, boring! Airdrie’s vibrant arts and culture scene is blossoming with the vivid imaginations of artists, dancers, musicians and our multicultural communities are enhancing our everyday experiences. These 17 days are no exception. Take the time to get to know the artful side of Airdrie. You’ll be surprised at just how much we have going on. Use this guide to plan activities with your family and your friends. From enjoying a great dining experience, or learning a new art skill, rocking out to a great band or taking in the ultimate in style at the AIRdirondack Gala, we’ve lined up a wide variety of arts experiences for you. I need to offer our sincere thanks to the major sponsors who have made ARTember possible, particularly The City of Airdrie, The Canada Heritage Fund, Alberta Tourism, Canals Landing (Genesis Land), and Vitreous Glass, Propak, Cam Clark Ford, Davis Chevrolet, airdrielife magazine and ATCO Gas. There are also countless local businesses who have also stepped up to host art displays or special events (see page 46). It’s very gratifying to see as a member of the business community, just how receptive it has become of the role arts and culture plays in our city. Events like these don’t happen without the countless hours of volunteer spirit that Airdrie is famous for. When you see our volunteers in their (very hard to miss) bright purple t-shirts you’ll know they have art in their hearts. And we are sure by the 29th of September, you will too. Make it an ARTember to remember!

self guided art walk In addition to the 15 businesses displaying local art (see page 16), you will find several really cool public art projects around town. Use this guide to take an artful journey through Airdrie, year round. AIRdirondack Chairs Until Sept 20 you can find the ten incredible completed works of art that are slated to be auctioned off (Sept 21) at the following locations: The Ravenswood show homes, Genesis Place, City Hall, Airdrie Public Library, Brewsters, Good Earth Coffeehouse and McArthurs Fine Furniture. Centennial Sphere The Centennial Sphere sculpture outside

City Hall on Main Street was a community-driven art project created to celebrate Airdrie’s Centennial in 2009. The piece was created by Cochrane artist Honsun Chu. The sphere represents Airdrie, and each water jet ring represents a year since its inception in 1909.

Community Sculptures Two of Airdrie’s northwest neigh-

bourhoods boast sculptures for all to enjoy. Reunion is home to a bronze statue of a little girl taking a peek inside her mom’s picnic basket. In Sagewood, a statue of a young soccer player graces the community. Both are by Cochrane bronze sculptors Don and Shirley Begg.

Fortis Alberta Art Wraps Earlier this year Fortis Alberta

selected the works of five local artists to create a unique wrap around their utility cubicles. You can find these transformed boxes near the Fortis Alberta office in Kings Heights, East Lake Blvd near Bert Church High School, Yankee Valley Crossing near Main Street and near Meadowbrook School and just off of Main Street and Centre Ave.

Gwacheon Totem Poles Six handcrafted totem poles stand

in Gwacheon Park (part of Nose Creek Park), donated by Airdrie’s sister city, Gwacheon, South Korea. The totem poles were received as a gift to commemorate 10 years of sister-city relations and friendship between Gwacheon and Airdrie.

Miller Street Art Gallery This awesome former skateboard park at the entrance to Nose Creek Park is a gallery in constant

change as local street artists are encouraged to come during daylight hours and paint to their heart’s content. A very cool backdrop for photos!

Painted Utility Box Located on the corner of Main and First

Avenue, the utility box was turned into a work of art in September 2012 by local artist Veronica Funk as part of the Awesome Airdrie initiative. We hope to see more of these painted in 2014. Want to be involved? Contact info@creativeairdrie.ca

Main Street Art Project At Centre Avenue and Main Street

you’ll find the work of hundreds of Airdrie residents along a 300foot mural. The Main Street Art Project combined the talents of more than 30 artists and 1,100 eager volunteers, from schoolchildren to dog walkers and even the local Twins and Triplets Association, to create a colourful mural on an empty lot.

Miller Mural When you drive by this impressive 300-foot mural on First Avenue just west of Main Street, you won’t believe it used to be just an old metal storage facility! The work was designed and installed by Zach Abbott and Graham Masters. Out of the Blue -Stained Glass In the windows of Genesis

Place, near the indoor soccer fields, you’ll find the stained glass work Out of the Blue, by Heinz and Patricia Demes. The artists were commissioned to create stained glass that would act as large glass murals visible from both sides.

The Collaboration Project Drop by the City Fire Hall on Chinook Drive inside the main foyer and enjoy the work of abstract artist Koos De Jongh. Open to the public between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., the installation of paintings take advantage of the hall’s unique open design. 12 pm | MOVIE AT CITY HALL Dare to Dream National Film Board (ages 13 +) Dare to Dream is an uplifting story about 13 students and their teacher, who follow their dream – against all odds – and make a feature-length film. Director Andrew Scholotiuk follows 13 students as they endeavour to achieve a Canadian first: producing a feature-length film as part their school curriculum. With only six months to prepare, shoot and edit, they must work hard to stay on top of their academics and end up putting in 250 hours above and beyond their course requirement. Another monumental challenge: creating high-risk stunt scenes that involve motorcycles, animals and fire. The students are pushed to their limits, physically and emotionally, in this captivating and inspiring story. Featuring a memorable soundtrack by North American musicians, the documentary follows the young filmmakers’ pursuit of a common dream. When faced with the possibility of failure, they rise to the occasion, demonstrating remarkable determination and passion. Dare to Dream is an inspirational story that will captivate anyone who has ever… dared to dream. Airdrie City Hall, Council Chambers, 400 Main Street Airdrie.

1 pm – 2:30 pm| Jr Artists at the Library with Samreen Junaid Henna has been used since the Bronze Age to dye skin (including body art), hair, fingernails, leather, silk and wool. In several parts of the world it is traditionally used in various festivals and celebrations. Use of henna for body art has enjoyed a recent renaissance due to improvements in cultivation, processing, and the emigration of people from traditional henna-using regions. For skin dyeing, a paste of ground henna (either prepared from a dried powder or from fresh ground leaves) is placed in contact with the skin from a few hours to overnight. Henna stains can last a few days to a month depending on the quality of the paste, individual skin type, and how long the paste is allowed to stay on the skin. 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm| Button Earring and Recycled Plastic Necklaces REDUCE!
