T
he Rhino Momma Project is dedicated to securing a future for rhinos in Namibia and indeed, in the rest of Africa. There are a number of ways that they are achieving their goals, but they can’t do it without our help. Flamingo chatted to those at the helm of The Rhino Momma Project, and asked them to explain how the project works, and what we, as individuals, can do to contribute to their goals. Tell us about the breeding of rhino? Yes, we are the largest white rhino breeding facility in Namibia. We purchased our first rhino in September 2011; a fiveyear-old rhino bull. In 2012 we purchased a mate for our bull, a beautiful cow with a heifer calf. It was at this stage that we fell in love with rhinos and decided we want to help save this iconic species from extinction, by breeding as many as possible of them in order to try to repopulate Namibia and Africa with rhinos. We continued building our breeding stock with additional purchases until December 2015, during which time we had a very healthy rhino population, with numerous calves born on the reserve. How And Why Did You Begin This? The aim of ‘The Rhino Momma Project’ is to breed and repopulate both Namibia and the rest of Africa with a species which is on the brink of extinction. According to the research, rhinos could become extinct by 2030 if we don’t protect them. Unfortunately sustaining such a breeding programme comes at a heavy cost. With the increase in poaching over the last decade, we have had to establish new ways and means to protect the rhino who play an active role in the planet’s ecosystem. Muller Stud, who took on the task to help fund The Rhino Momma Project, has to create new ways in order to finance the project which includes the adoption programme and voluntourism. When it comes to the trading of wildlife, this in itself is conservation. All trading of our rhino and other endangered species, is done in accordance with the line ministry within Namibia (Ministry of Environment and Tourism) who is also part of CITES (Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). Therefore, the only way to increase the population of a species is to breed them, sell them

and successfully relocate them to other reserves and African countries. This is wildlife conservation. With the help of Muller Stud and Wildlife Vets Namibia, seventeen rhino's were translocated to two sepereate reserves in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These are the first white rhinos to be relocated into the Western DRC in decades, thereby making it a huge milestone and success in wildlife conservation. Since 2013, The Rhino Momma Project has bred 75 new rhino calves and in order to protect this dwindling species, we require an anti-poaching unit, of which the cost is astronomically high as it also requires air surveillance. There is unfortunately no other way to protect the rhinos. Therefore, with the above taken into consideration, the upkeep of one protected rhino is approximately US$275.00 per month. It is just too expensive and therefore unsustainable to breed rhinos, hence the need to think “out of the box” and find inventive ways to fund these projects. Many such projects currently have had to close down in South Africa, due to the fact that rhinos cannot be bred sustainably because of the huge costs involved. Volunteering Muller Stud has decided to dedicate to the conservation of the white and black rhino and try to get volunteers to help on the farm in return the money goes to the Rhino Momma Project. Muller Stud has had many volunteers on site who have been thrilled with the work being done, and most have indicated they would like to return in the future. These are young people who put their money, time and effort where their mouths are, and are making a difference by helping to save Namibia’s rhinos from extinction. To every volunteer, we are eternally grateful for the time, money and effort put into the breeding project. Without each volunteer, sponsor and generous heart, the rhino population would not be growing again. With your help we are turning the tide! Proud to make a difference!

isual Artist, Painter and Printmaker, Kabelo Kim Modise was born in Francistown in Botswana, and was schooled and studied further there. He taught at schools in Botswana, and then spent four years at the Botswana National Museum & Art Gallery. When Kabelo moved to Namibia, he studied for a Diploma in Visual Arts at the University of Namibia, and he’s currently undertaking a Bachelor of Visual Arts (BVA) through the University of South Africa (UNISA).
For the past ten years, he’s been lecturing Textile Design and Print Making at Namibia’s College of the Arts. He also held the position of Centre Manager at John Muafangejo Art Centre in Namibia. Kabelo has always been inspired by Pop Art, and that influence is keenly felt in his work. Ever since he committed himself to his art, he’s had numerous exhibitions and workshops in Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and internationally, and held several artist’s residencies. His most recent working concepts

are Empty Spaces, Political Portraits, and Pop Art. He’s been working on the latter for the past five years. He’s received numerous accolades for his exceptional work, namely the Commonwealth Arts and Crafts Award Winner in 2004/5, and he was a Bank Windhoek Triennial Silver Award Winner for his 2D art work in 2011. After 20 years in the visual arts, if you ask Kabelo to describe his big dream career wise, he smiles: “To create an inspirational path.” There’s little doubt that he’s been doing that, as he not only creates his own unique inspirational work, but inspires others to do likewise. atural Selection will open their most exclusive property yet; Tuludi, in the Okavango Delta, Botswana in July this year. Located in the Khwai Private Reserve in the northern reaches of the Okavango, Tuludi is not just exclusive because it has only seven tents but because of the 200,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, where animal sightings are plentiful and other guests are not. Natural Selection’s new Tuludi Camp will be set in the Khwai Private Reserve, a wilderness area dotted with pockets of verdant forest, enormous leadwood trees, and open savannahs. In the middle of it all is the Khwai River, lifeline of the reserve and water source that attracts herds of wildlife. The Okavango Delta is one of the most iconic wildlife destinations on earth. Home to leopard, lion and wild dog, there is no shortage of high-octane wildlife encounters in this extraordinary ecosystem. But perhaps the biggest luxury here is the space and exclusivity; here, wildlife easily outnumbers the safari cars and other guests are a rare sighting!
At Tuludi, the seven tree-house styled luxury tented rooms use an earthy, nature-inspired palette, each one with an uninterrupted view on to wildlife filled floodplains. Each of the spacious guest tents and outdoor living areas is over 1000 square feet in size, comprises of a separate dressing and sleeping area, en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, as well as al fresco bathtubs. Outside there’s a sunken seating area, a hanging chair and a private plunge pool, all overlooking those enormous floodplains. The spacious main area faces west, making it the ideal spot for a gin and tonic sundowner on a lazy afternoon after a dip in the main pool. The treehouse library is set high up in the canopy; the perfect place to curl up with a book and listen to the sounds of nature all around. The name ‘Tuludi’ is a Tswana word that describes the colours or markings of the leopard. It is in fact a ‘royal’ colour or marking that is held in very high regard in Botswana. This could not be more appropriate as 1.5% of all revenue from Tuludi

goes straight back to conservation projects, and in the Khwai Private Reserve itself, Natural Selection has partnered with the Botswana Predator Conservation Trust to collect data on the leopard population on the fringes of the reserve, about which very little is currently known. Days at Tuludi will be spent exploring the Delta, but guests are not limited to the usual game drives. The waterways are best experienced from a mokoro, Botswana’s hand carved canoes, where you’ll cruise along gently on the water. Boating safaris are also available and are a great way to see pods of hippo and elephant in an unobtrusive way, as well as walking safaris for
those looking for an adventurous and active way to experience the wilderness. Wild about drawing Vince Reid’s meticulously observed pencil drawings of wild and tame aspects of Africa, reflect his love of the continent and its extreme beauty. Edited by Anne Schauffer Photographs by Vince Reid
V
ince Reid was born in Mutare in Zimbabwe, and as he says, “I’ve always been a close observer of the outdoors.” All his spare time was spent in the hills or along the rivers of his family farm. Reid says it was a troubled time in Zimbabwe in the 1980s, and as a result his school art department had few art materials, so he began working in pencil: “I did portraits and wildlife drawings for my friends.” Reid studied interior design, and spent 18 years in the exhibition and events industry, focussing almost entirely on Computer Aided Design: “Creative expression took a back seat.” But as time went by, Reid felt increasingly unfulfilled, thus he took a leap of faith and began a full-time career in art. That was 2011: “My family and I relocated to the little country town of Howick in Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa, so I could pursue my art in a more peaceful, rural and creative environment.” And he did just that, always working in pencil: “I do monochrome pencil art on white paper which is a dry medium. Pencil is my medium of choice because it is extremely direct, which satisfies my desire to express the deep contrasts and textures of my subjects. I aim to capture those moments which represent the essence of the African outdoor experience. I am inspired by the textures of nature, and graphite allows me to incrementally and sometimes painstakingly carve those textures out of my paper. Each piece is a representation of my own personal experience and I will always endeavour to experience everything that I draw.”

Wildlife, trees and country life are his main subjects, and he says if he had to pick one favourite, baobab trees would be it. Reid is passionate about game parks, and visits whenever he can. He considers himself fortunate to have visited, among others, Etosha, Chobe, Kariba, Mana Pools, Mapungubwe, Mkhuze, Hluhluwe-Mfolozi, and Phinda: “My favourite so far has been Mapungubwe as it has awesome baobabs and is particularly scenic.” Reid is also captivated by photography, and he spends time taking photographs which he can recreate in pencil. His work is permanently displayed at the Hallett Reid Gallery in Howick. He was a 2014 finalist in the prestigious David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year - Mall Gallery London.

o other grape variety is as embedded in the DNA of the South African wine landscape as Chenin Blanc. Despite its ancestral home being in the Loire Valley of France, Chenin Blanc from South Africa is recognised as the best in the world, the result of this variety being one of the first wine grapes to be grown at the Cape, as well as the diverse pockets of terroir where it has been planted over the past few centuries. When the first commander of the Cape, Jan van Riebeeck, on 2 February 1659 announced the crushing of the first grapes from which wine was to be made in the new Dutch Colony, Chenin Blanc was a part of that initial batch. Today Chenin is the country’s most planted variety by far - 17 543ha in the ground at the end of 2017, this making up 18.6% of the national vineyard. But it is not only about the quantity of Chenin Blanc available to power the South African wine industry at various levels of price and quality that makes this variety so important to the country’s wine narrative. Being one of the traditional grape varieties means that Chenin Blanc vines of 50 years and older are still found around the Cape, these senior blocks being sought-after due to the plants’ ability to make spectacularly complex wines of individuality and character.
The legacy of 53-year old Chenin Blanc vines Stellenrust, one of the Stellenbosch regions leading producers of Chenin Blanc, is one of the wineries committed to using old Chenin Blanc vineyards to showcase another side of this extraordinary variety. The quality of wine made from older vineyards is underscored by the Stellenrust 53 Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2017 that won a Gold Medal at last year’s Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards. “The ‘53’ refers to the age of the Chenin Blanc vines in the year of harvest,” explains Tertius Boshoff, the Stellenrust winemaker who has built a reputation for his range of quality Chenin Blanc wines, among others. “Stellenrust is actually two properties, each situated on a different part of Stellenbosch terroir. The old Chenin Blanc vineyard from which the Barrel Fermented Chardonnay is made is from the Bottelary side of Stellenbosch, Bottelary being especially well-known for its old Chenin vineyards.” Being such an old vineyard, Boshoff says that one has to work carefully with every grape. “Those old vineyards have seen over 50 winters and summers and do not bear high yields,” he says. “We select the best berries and stick to a method of minimum-intervention winemaking. “After crushing the juice is allowed to settle for a few days before being drawn-off and placed into specially selected barrels of which 90% were French and 10% Hungarian. No yeast is added to the wines, so it is a case of long, slow natural fermentation – eight months in the case of the Stellenrust 53 Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2017. The wine was then left in wood for another month before racking and bottling.” Pouring the wine, one knows that there is something special about this. For a young wine the colour is deep and golden, dense aromas of honeycomb, nuts and butter wafting from the glass. On the palate the wine is succulent and complex, yet showing an invigorating and life-affirming freshness. “At Stellenrust we talk of ‘yellow’ flavours in Chenin Blanc,” says Boshoff. And so they are: notes of butter-cup, peach and pear. And above all, sun.
A gentle hand needed for older vines Much is made about wines made from older vines these days. But do they necessarily make better wines? “I wouldn’t say old vines guarantee good wines as it depends where they are planted and how the fruit is handled in the winery,” says Boshoff. “But grapes from older vines lead to wines with a different set of characters and nuances than younger ones. And when these are good in a wine, it really does deserve shouting about.” If the Bottelary region allows Stellenrust to showcase a brilliant white wine such as the Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc, the winery’s vineyards in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch enables it to offer top-quality red wines. The Peppergrinder Shiraz 2015 was another Gold medal-winner at last year’s Michelangelo Awards, a wine also made from older vineyards, these having been planted in 1972.

“Our vines on the Helderberg side fall in that area’s so-called Golden Triangle, a parcel of terroir renowned for making some of South Africa’s most famous red wines,” says Boshoff. “It is one of the country’s best regions for Shiraz and it is just such a joy making wines from grapes of this quality.” The grapes were crushed and allowed to cold macerate for 24 hours in open-fermenters. Inoculation with French Rhone yeast strains followed and the juice was left to ferment on the skins for between 10 - 14 days, with manual punch down of the cap every two to six hours. The juice is drained off the skins and allowed to finish alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Barrel-maturation varies from 20 to 24 months of which 95% was done in French and 5% American oak. The name “Peppergrinder” obviously refers to the notes of freshly ground pepper that marks a truly fine Shiraz. In this wine the slight pepper aroma and taste is complemented by blackcurrant, violets and black olive, all delivered on a lovely soft, sensual palate-weight. Stellenbosch, South Africa’s undisputed premier wine region, is known as a region of many wine worlds. Bottelary and Helderberg are two of these, and it does appear that Stellenrust has the best of both. For more information, visit www.stellenrust.co.za

The sun was quickly rising upward and I decided not to miss this moment while replacing a lens, so I shot the scene through the panorama of several frames from my hand without tripod.’

The overall winner of the 2018 Amateur competition is Nathaniel Merz from South Korea. ‘Royal Ceremony’, Daedunsan, South Korea – Nathaniel Merz ‘Ever since first exploring the mountains here in Korea I have fallen in love with the bonsailike pine trees clinging to the rocky peaks. This particular tree was always one of my favourites for its tall, regal shape and the fact that it stood alone right on the edge of a cliff. While it is beautiful year round, it looks particularly beautiful covered in just the right amount of frost and snow like I was luckily able to capture on this morning. At first, I was greeted by almost total white-out conditions, but as I waited near this tree the fog began to move in and out just enough that the light was able to pour in and illuminate the tree and the surrounding fog in beautiful warm light. It was one of those moments where, thankfully, everything came together.’

The winner of the Carolyn Mitchum Award is Anastasia Woolmington from Australia. ‘Wedded Rocks’, Japan – Anastasia Woolmington ‘Meoto Iwa or Wedded Rocks is a pair of sacred rocks in the sea off Futami in Japan. The two rocks are joined together in matrimony by a sacred Shinto straw rope called a shimenawa. The larger of the two rocks represents a husband, while the smaller rock represents the wife. Many couples from Japan travel there to ask for blessing for their marriage. Earlier this year my husband and I went on a trip to Japan. And I had a vision of photographing Meoto Iwa at sunset (unusual time to photograph at this location), when last rays of sun lit up the rocks and the rope with golden glow. Using long exposure technique, I wanted the roughness of rocks to contrast with smoothness and softness of water. My image represents strength and union of two people thrown into life together: they have to make it through stormy days, calm days, rain, sun, changing seasons, years. Bigger rock shelters smaller rock from winds of open sea and small rock gets fully exposed at low tide, showing her “husband” a stable ground beneath them. They are beautiful on their own but together they create a perfect harmony. Just like in marriage two people complimenting each other, become one without losing their own identity. On a personal level this image represents my relationship with my husband. He is my rock and my strength, he will drive for countless hours, help carry my gear and patiently wait with me, so I can take my photographs and make my dreams come true. He knows how much photography means to me, I live and breathe it since a very young age. I believe in real and raw photography that shows beauty of our world as it is, because I believe it doesn’t need photo manipulation. I often find myself in tears just by looking at the raw beauty of our imperfectly perfect world. And as a photographer I want to inspire people to open their eyes, to see, to listen, to feel. See every detail of our world, nature, wildlife. Today a lot of people focus on material goods, money, things that don’t matter. With my work, I hope I can open someone’s heart and inspire them to make protection of the world a priority.’

The winner of the EPSON Digital Art Prize is Colin Sillerud from the USA. This award aims to reward excellence in modern digital post-processing. ‘Spark’, Grand Canyon, USA – Colin Sillerud. ‘This image was the result of tenacious scouting, fanatic preparation, and luck when my plans and knowledge went out the window. Monsoon season is my favorite. The air breathes with energy and uncertainty. Blistering heat can turn to a freezing deluge in minutes. Preparing for this year’s downpours I spent months scouting. As summer turned to monsoons, my trip was set. Then, an emergency delayed my leaving and I began to worry about missing my window. Two weeks of storms followed and two weeks of emergencies kept me home. The worry turned to panic as I imagined a season wasted. When I finally departed, my weather app predicted eighty percent chance for storms. After an hour on the road, the prediction dropped to sixty percent. Another hour and sixty percent dropped to forty. Four hours later a week of storms became a week of blue skies. The only moisture left was a tear welling in my eye. Out of anger and frustration, I changed my destination to the only area that seemed to have any clouds left. When I arrived, the sky was clear and I was defeated. Cooking dinner in a stupor, a flash would occasionally light the corner of my eye, but I dismissed it as wishful thinking. Then came another flash, and another. Slowly turning, my eyes traced the horizon. Fifty miles off, a lightning bolt reached out and down from a barely perceptible cloud. My breath caught. By one am, three storms surrounded me, each unleashing a bolt every 5-10 seconds. I shot on automatic and after hours of ecstasy I collapsed like a giddy toddler. In the end, I produced two of my favourite images from this incredible event.’

In addition to a powerful engine and compressor, the Sandvik Leopard DI650i incorporates a highly ergonomic iCAB cabin, excellent serviceability, mobility and fuel economy, along with scalable automation packages to offer excellent overall productivity. The Leopard DI650i comes with a range of new or re-designed components to boost its productivity. The standard rotary head option HTRH6, has a proven track record on current Sandvik DTH rigs. We also offer a new heavy-duty option MRH6, which is designed to perform in the most robust environments and larger hole sizes. The maintenance crew can carry out all daily servicing tasks at ground level on both sides of the machine. The advanced serviceability and reliability features can increase the Leopard DI650i’s availability by up to 20% compared with conventional DTH rigs at a similar technology level. Intelligent control technology applied in both the compressor and the hydraulic system’s cooler fan can reduce fuel consumption by up to 15% compared with conventional DTH rigs. The Leopard DI650i’s fuel efficiency is further boosted by the flow-controlled drilling control system that eliminates fluctuations in airflow, instead allowing the pressure level to fluctuate in response to more difficult ground conditions and increased back pressure (for example, due to groundwater or collapsing holes). This makes maximum flushing pressure and penetration rates available in the most challenging rock conditions, while still retaining the low fuel consumption of the traditional pressure control approach in easy ground conditions. The Leopard DI650i joins Sandvik’s other i-series drilling rigs in its compatibility with the newest scalable automation solutions. You look to the left and right, and weigh up options. To the south-east, the road leads to Tsumeb and Grootfontein and to the north-west, to Ondangwa and the B10 that skirts the northern reaches. But, hang on a bit, what’s the rush, Owamboland is calling.

Home to the Aawambo people, the largest ethnic group in Namibia, this vast area stretches above Etosha National Park like the leafy crown of an ancient tree. Comprising four regions all beginning with ‘O’ - Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto and Ohangwena - it is sometimes referred to as the ‘Oregions’. At times, it is simply called ‘the North’. And although not totally PC, its pre-independence name ‘Owamboland’ has also stuck and remains an apt name for the Owambo regions, home to the eight Oshiwambo groups, some still headed by royalty. Characterised by a hodgepodge of brightly-painted shebeens (informal taverns) with quirky names, makalani palm trees, oshanas (seasonal ponds), mahangu fields, car-spare yards and traditional homesteads, Owamboland is a new and interesting world. For the traveller eager and open to becoming acquainted with other cultures, it’s a fascinating Oshiwambo feast. DON’T MISS:
OMBALANTU BAOBAB Heading westward on the C46, it’s worth stopping at the Ombalantu Baobab national heritage site in Outapi to celebrate these great and protected trees. The Ombalantu Baobab is 1000 years old and has a circumference of 25 metres. Thirteen people with arms outstretched are needed to circle its wide base. The baobab served as a place of safety for the Ombalantu people during the tribal wars long ago when it is said that they made a hole and climbed into its depths. It has also served as a post office and a chapel. Its old lectern and benches remain, as well as its sacred energy. No matter how many baobabs you come across, you can never tire of the baobab’s grand beauty. As the story goes, Tate Kalunga (Father God) made all things on this earth. He made man and woman, animals and fish. By the time he got to the trees however, he was very tired and planted the baobab in the ground upside down, hence the root-like
NAKAMBALE MUSEUM – A CENTURY-OLD FINNISH MISSION Situated on the outskirts of Ondangwa in Olukonda, Nakambale is always a favourite. Martti Rautanen was one of the first Finnish missionaries in northern Namibia. He was instrumental in translating the bible into Oshindonga and made a large impression in the area. The sprawling old church built in 1889 still stands and his home now houses the Nakambale museum. The cool interior with its thick walls radiates its own special atmosphere and is steeped in history. The graves of Martti and family members lie in the graveyard adjacent to the old church. The manager of the museum, Maggie Kanaante, offers village tours and will prepare a traditional meal – if notified in advance. (When overnighting at Ongula Village Homestead near Ondangwa, guests will also have the opportunity to join a village tour and to try some traditional fare served as a supper option.)

It is definitely something to add to a bucket list – and to tick off: ‘Sit in the heart of an ancient baobab tree!’ UUKWALUUDHI ROYAL HOMESTEAD Circling round on the D3612 to Tsandi, this old royal homestead is totally unexpected. It’s a traditional Oshiwambo homestead – enlarged to royal proportions; an African version of a palace and the former residence of Uukwaluudhi sovereign, King Taapopi. The homestead is encircled by a large palisade made of stout mopane branches and divided into partitions suitable for the royal family. A path leads in maze style through the homestead, a scheme to divert animals and enemies. Without a guide you are completely lost. The guided tour gives you invaluable insight into the traditional living quarters, lives and culture of the Aawambo people.

ONGULUMBASHE HERITAGE SITE Tsandi is also where you’ll find the road to Ongulumbashe, dedicated to the country’s liberation struggle. A larger-than-life statue of Sam Nujoma (Namibia’s first president) towers over the landscape and robust bronze statues mark this site where the armed struggle against apartheid began on 26 August 1966 when the South African police launched an assault against SWAPO’s (South West African People Organisation’s) armed wing.

It’s environmentally friendly, is extremely quick and cheap to build, and has enormous potential for Africa’s housing. Forlales won £50 000 for his entry in the RICS competition.

T
he Cities for our Future competition launched in January 2018 aimed to find practical solutions to problems faced by the world’s cities. The overall global winner received a £50 000 prize to help make their idea a reality. RICS received over 1 200 entries that were narrowed down to
a final 12. These 12 were given a RICS mentor who helped them develop their idea over the course of a few months in advance of the final judging which took place in early November. RICS ran the competition as part of their 150th anniversary celebrations, and were working with the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the UK National Commission for UNESCO. The winning entry was selected by a group of 5 judges: John Hughes, President, RICS (Head Judge); Beth Taylor, UK National Commission for UNESCO; Henry Majed, Director, 2degrees; Nirmala Rao, Association of Commonwealth Universities; and Richard Templer, Director of Innovation at the Grantham Institute, Imperial. Earl Patrick Forlales, 23, from Manila, won the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Cities for our Future competition with an idea designed to help solve the city of Manila’s slum

housing crisis. CUBO, which is a project to build new, low-cost and environmentally friendly housing units, received the £50 000 prize money to start work next year. As bamboo prefers a tropical climate, this concept can easily be applied in parts of Africa. Says TC Chetty, RICS Country Manager for South Africa: “The competition entries, from all over the world, were narrowed down to 12 shortlisted entries, including the Africa regional winner, who came up with an inventive way to retrofit existing buildings in African cities with 3D printed porous insulation panels to improve liveability and reduce energy consumption for cooling and ventilation. The finalists were then assigned individual RICS mentors who were experts in the specific fields that the ideas addressed, to develop their ideas. These entries were then judged by a panel of six leading global experts based on the following five criteria; relevance, impact, feasibility, scalability and originality. “Manila is one of the fastest growing megacities in East Asia, with a population of 12 million people. The city will soon be at breaking point, with an additional 2.5 million workers moving to the city in the next three years to work on the government’s infrastructure programme. These workers will join the four million Manilans – a third of the city’s current population – who live in abject slums.” To combat this epidemic of substandard living, Forlales designed a new type of modular housing that will be used to
house the incoming worker population in the short term, before being applied to the rest of the city’s slum community. The housing is both affordable (at just £60 per square metre) and fast to build (four hours per unit). Forlales chose to use bamboo for CUBO’s construction, inspired by his grandparent’s rural bamboo house and its abundance in the region. It is also environmentally friendly, with waste used as a resource converted into, among other things, biochar (a charcoal-like substance produced from plant matter and which has a range of uses). The material is both treated and laminated, meaning that its lifecycle is 10 times as long as normal bamboo. The key benefits of CUBO are: •

Quick and affordable: Because of the simple modular design and cheap materials, CUBO houses can be manufactured in a week, constructed in only four hours and at a cost of only £60 per square metre Innovative design: Clever elements include a tilted roof that captures rainwater and reduces heat gain, and elevated stilts that prevent floodwaters from entering the home. A sustainable material: Bamboo is an ideal material because it releases 35% more oxygen than trees and can be grown on poor quality land and harvested annually without leading to soil degradation.

More than just a housing project: Forlales has designed a business plan that will provide local people with not just housing, but new skills, jobs and community space. He also proposes raising money for the project by selling waste plastic to factories. A scalable solution: The solution can be applied to any city where bamboo can be grown, including most of Southeast Asia and parts of Africa and Latin America.
Forlales will now work with RICS experts and industry professionals to begin work on the project next year, utilising RICS standards and best practice to ensure that it is delivered quickly to help change the lives of the population of Manila. Earl has already identified a suitable plot of land to begin construction, with the hope that it will be used in other cities facing similar crises. avid laughs at his claim to fame, “My mother’s family (Wheildon) had a pottery business in England…Spode and Wedgwood were his apprentices in 1764.” Dave began his working life as a textile designer. He’d known right from school days that he wanted to venture into commercial design, and his tertiary education was at the then Durban art school: “It was the best. The three-year course covered many subjects. My lasting memory was the first life drawing class where the model was, as would be expected (by everybody except myself) stark staring naked.” Life drawing classes always have nude models, but clearly David was unprepared. He laughs, “Yes, I got an A for life drawing.” When he left Art School, he began at Whiteheads, the English textile company, in Tongaat, north of Durban. Three years later, he moved to Romatex Floor Coverings as a designer, and when they opened a design department in Cape Town, he was offered the position: “My working life in floor coverings product development was always rewarding. Design and technology never marks time and even now when I go into various homes and buildings, product that I designed and coloured can be found on the floor. Very satisfying indeed.” In 1987, Dave and his wife resigned from the corporate, commercial life, and went to live in Greyton in the country, an hour and a half from Cape Town: “The first painting that I ever sold was of a wine cellar in the Cape. From this came many commissions to paint many of the old historic Cape homes.”

Today, most of Dave’s paintings are commissioned. But then, “Painting pictures was just one string to my bow. In a small village one has to be quite creative to stay alive. Every Friday evening when the weekenders arrived, I used to prepare a well-known village landmark on canvas, and finish the painting as diners walked past my office window to the restaurant adjoining my office. I would wear a brightly coloured floral blouse and a ridiculous hat of some sort. I could hear the comments through the window, which are not to be repeated. However, the next morning I would always sell the painting displayed in the window for the diners to view on their way home. The sale was probably helped by the odd bottle of wine.” Dave has always earned a living from his artwork, but as he says, “The art world is so unpredictable, I’ve always had one foot in the commercial world. To educate and bring up five children is a fair challenge!” Today, Dave lives up in the Kwazulu-Natal Midlands. He has garnered a reputation as the Nguni man, but it’s somewhat erroneous: “I have access to herds of Nguni cattle and have sold many Nguni paintings over the years, so I developed that reputation. But I enjoy a wide range of favourite subjects.” Now that Dave no longer needs to raise children, he paints
whenever the spirit moves him. “All our children are making their way in life so I’m freer to paint, or not. There is always a difference in the final result if one HAS to paint a picture or one WANTS to. When the mood arrives, I thoroughly enjoy what I do. Music volume up, dogs fed, wife happy...and out with my paints. Dave and wife Ginny adore wildlife and game reserves, so when they can, they escape there - many of the images they shoot, end up as reference for a canvas: “But escaping is not so easy though, as my wife Ginny is a ‘doula’ which is a birth companion and she’s very much in demand.” A grin, “Infants have a bad habit of arriving at the most inconvenient times.” But Dave keeps himself busy cruising the coffee shops in Hilton, or tucking into a good book. “Zulu Lulu is the only gallery that has my work in the Midlands. They have done very well for me and sold paintings to folks from all over the world.” You'll often find work of his in the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery in Durban, as well.

he pen, I’ve been told, is mightier than the sword. There have been times when I’ve wondered if the founding fathers of this notion have seen a Magnum 45 fired at close range, and I’d certainly want more than a rhyming couplet confronted by a raging Mike Tyson. That said, however, English teachers instilled in me a lifelong fascination for words and the power lying dormant in the simple armoury that is the Oxford dictionary. Choose the right ones, get them in the correct order, deliver them with conviction, timing and passion and you can start a war, feed the fires of love, manipulate the masses and contrary to the playground mantra, create more harm than sticks and stones. Lined up in the right sequence, they can also sell products, reduce audiences to tears, amuse, inspire, irritate, infuriate, motivate and titillate; in short, by successfully cracking the ‘Thesaurian’ code, you could, like the fellow with the lever long enough and fulcrum strong enough, single-handedly move the world. And all this power, along with the wisdom of the universe, is lying innocuously hidden between the covers, just waiting to be arranged in the appropriate array. It is the sound of words and names, as much as anything, that guides our emotions. In restaurants, adjectives like crisp, plump, juicy and succulent, spice up a meal as much as salt and pepper. Urbane sophistication is imparted into menus by the addition of a little foreign terminology, especially French and Italian. Boeuf Bourguignon, Carpaccio, Fettucini, Pescatore, and Zabaglione… What chance is there for veal and two veg versus savoury fare with savoir-Faire? ‘Chateaubriand for two’ rolls nicely off the tongue, but the more practical Afrikaans side of the menu, 'Biefstuk vir twee', bring us back to earth with a jolt.
Some of the most creative writing is to be found in the columns of the wine critics. Cursed with a palate that struggles to differentiate between plonk and Moët, however, I am overawed by scribes who detect nuances imparted by Brussel sprouts growing next to a vineyard. You simply have to be curious about a vintage that is ‘translucent deep plum in colour, redolent of green peppers, with a hint of violets, flashes of liquorice, all intertwined with raspberry jam and vanilla scents.’ In medicine, terms like scurvy, multiple sclerosis, rheumatism, and osteoporosis, all do a capital job of priming you for the worst. There are some names, however, that by their very sound, are misleading. Guillain-Barre is a deadly neurological disease that completely paralyses its victims, but it could just as well be a French impressionist painter: ‘Water Lilies by Guillain-Barre’. Boutiques with elevated social aspirations move a notch up the ladder with the addition of a ‘pe’ to the word – ‘shop’. Expect a round of price increases, when Constantine Elefteriades starts running his corner café from a shoppe. Finally, there is the idiomatic side to language that must give foreigners a torrid time in coping with translations. Newcomers to the English language might need to be told that jumping out of one’s skin does not necessarily mean forsaking one’s epidermis. NWR LOOKS TO GHANA Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) held a marketing and networking session in Ghana aimed at luring Ghanaian visitors to their resorts. The event took place late last year in conjunction with Air Namibia’s local representative who gave attendees the benefits of flying with Air Namibia. The networking session came at the backdrop of the Namibian delegation that visited Ghana from 14 – 21 October 2018 led by the Ministry of Works and Transport permanent secretary Mr Willem Goeiemann. During that visit, NWR was able to create links with Ghanaian tour operators and corporate companies that showed great interest in visiting its establishments. “We, therefore, saw an opportunity to further cement our place within the Ghanaian market by hosting a session aimed at captains of industry and social media influencers. During our networking session, we shared packages that we had specifically created for the Ghanaian market. Many of the guests loved the fact that
Namibia has so much to offer”, says Ms Esther Ndilula, NWR’s meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE) and tour planning manager. At the event, former Ghanaian Ambassador to Namibia Ambassador Abdul-Rahman Haruna Attah gave a fantastic account of his time in Namibia. With great joy and excitement, he highlighted the unique aspects that Namibia has to offer and the contrasting views that any Ghanaian visiting would experience. “Namibia is one of the three countries I love the most in the world. It is beautiful and spotless and offers visitors so much to see and do. Therefore, such an event is testimony that NWR sees great potential within the Ghanaian market and would like for us to make use of it”, said Ambassador Attah. With Air Namibia having four direct flights between Ghana and Namibia with a brief stopover in Lagos, Nigeria, Ghanaians have nothing standing in their way in making Namibia their preferred holiday destination. Acquiring a visa to Namibia can be done at the Namibian High Commission in Accra.

8. GENERAL RULES 8.1 Aircraft engaged in Search and Rescue operations are exempted from all airport/aerodrome charges upon presentation of proof that such aircraft was designated by the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCA) to engage in Search and Rescue operations for that particular flight. 8.2 Aircraft certificated in the private category in their Airworthiness Certification are exempted from passenger charges. All other aircraft are not exempted from passenger charges, irrespective of the use of the aircraft save where another exemption under these rules apply. 8.3 Transit passengers, defined as those passengers stopping temporarily at a particular airport/aerodrome, whether or not they disembark the aircraft, departing on the same aircraft with the same flight number, are exempted from charges at such airport/aerodrome. 8.4 Transfer passengers, defined as those passengers stopping temporarily at a particular airport/aerodrome and disembarking from the aircraft, but departing from an aircraft with a different flight number, whether or not it is the same aircraft are not exempted from passenger charges at such airport/ aerodrome. 8.5 Namibian and foreign State aircraft in the service of the military, customs or police are exempted from landing and parking charges, but not from passenger charges, upon presentation of proof that: 8.5.1 Such aircraft is in the service of the military, customs or police: 8.5.2 The purpose of the particular flight is related to military, customs or police operations; and 8.5.3 In case of a foreign aircraft, that such aircraft is a State aircraft. 8.6 Mercy flights are exempted from after hours charges but not from passenger, landing or parking charges. 8.7 The NAC may, at an airport/aerodrome under its management, refuse the provision of any relevant activity (as defined in s 1 of the Act) to any user with an outstanding account in respect of airport/aerodrome charges. 8.8 All other rules and charges is contained in the Government Notice No 20 published in the Government Gazette of 5 February 1999 (No 2045), remain applicable, save where amended by publication in terms of s 5(1) of the Act. 9. Flight and Cabin Crew Members, defined as members travelling in the course of duty. 10. Infant Passengers, defined as those passengers who have not yet reached their second birthday are exempted from charges at such airport/ aerodrome. 11. Interest at the rate of 2.5% above prime rate (as determined by the financial institutions) will be charged annually on all outstanding balances exceeding 30 days from the invoicing date.
12. That transfer passengers are not exempted from any airports charges effective from 01 December 2017
