ow did Zizamele come about? Beginning as a government-sponsored learnership - 18 months training and six months Learn-and-Earn phase Zizamele morphed into something way, way bigger. The trainees and their trainer, Toni Burton, designed and made products which were then marketed – the brand name, Zizamele Ceramics, means ‘to develop.’ In June 2008 Zizamele Ceramics was registered as a CC.All the original Zizamele artists are still in the group, bar one. Two further artists were employed, as well as a dispatch clerk and two saleswomen for the retail outlet. The business model has linked remuneration to incentives, plus a basic salary. Zizamele Ceramics is currently a beneficiary of the CBI programme which provides mentorship and business advice. There are presently seven full-time, and three part-time, employees. Flamingo asked Toni Burton a few questions about Zizamele Ceramics:
The vision - The Art of Changing Lives Zizamele Ceramics has faced many hurdles and obstacles to success, but the strength of the group lies in their unity and the fact that they resemble the idea behind their signature product, the Ubuntu Bowl. On this bowl women in traditional Xhosa dress are holding hands in a spirit of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is an African concept meaning people are stronger together than individually. A range of related products includes vases, candlesticks, animal shaped t-lights, memo-holders, soap and olive dishes. There is also a new range of Christmas products featuring angels on the bowls, hanging angels and standing angels. If Zizamele can grow its market – the vision is for a broader international market - it can mentor more trainees and thereby create more jobs. The first retail outlet was opened in December 2012, and in 2014, a stand was opened at The Watershed, V&A Waterfront. A stand was later opened at The Watershed, V&A Waterfront

in October 2014. The artists demonstrated their craft in the ‘Artisanal Workshop’. Ceramic Workshops are offered as an Airb’n’b ‘Experience’, and team-builds are offered in the studio where the artists can be watched making their Ubuntu Bowls. A range of children’s ceramics was launched in March 2012. The theme of the range is endangered South African animals such as the Rhino, Riverine Rabbit, Wild Dog, the Blue Swallow and the Leopard Toad. This range has a contemporary feel and is made from white earthenware slip, decorated with decals.
What is Zizamele’s target market? Prestigious stores such as Anthropologie and Crate & Barrel in the USA have placed large orders of up to 3000 items. The Smithsonian African Museum in Washington DC recently ordered 450 items, Zizamele shipped 700 items to a Fair Trade outlet in Holland, and 140 large bowls to New York in May 2018. Locally, the products appeal to up-market tourists as well as locals seeking an authentic South African gift. Zizamele made customised Ubuntu bowls for the tables at Desmond & Leah Tutu’s golden wedding anniversary in 2015. These were different as they featured men and women holding hands around the bowl! The new white range appeals to the décor market. Conference gifts can be customised, and logos added if needed. Product development is ongoing and dynamic. Zizamele Ceramics stamp, sign and date all their work. The SA National Gallery has purchased three of the Ubuntu Bowls over the years and these feature in their permanent collection.
Describe your new product range, ‘Women of Africa' In this range, Zizamele creates clay women in traditional dress on the Ubuntu bowls. Some examples are: Ndebele, Zulu, Indian, Asian, European, Herero and other women. In 2018, the successful ceramic range has been expanded into textiles, specifically bags and aprons – these are part of the stock at The Watershed stand.
What does the future hold? Our mission statement is ‘Making world class ceramics in Africa'. Zizamele Ceramics not only creates handmade ceramics in the vibrant colours and patterns of South Africa, but it also embodies the new national spirit since 1994. The team is a loyal group of women (and one man) that symbolises the strength and unity seen in their signature product, the Bambanani Bowl. Fairtrade practices are followed with Fairtrade accreditation currently being researched.

S
ingapore is a major economic powerhouse with very limited space, so the population is forced to go skywards in acquiring accommodation. This goes for many first rate hotels as well. Aided by a very patient taxi driver we saw a few excellent alternatives - all with superb facilities and swimming pools built onto extended decks. On a whim we decided to take a look at a resort I had seen featured on a website. This was on Sentosa Island - linked to the city by bridge, monorail and cableway. Arriving at The Singapore Resort and Spa Sentosa, we fell in love with the place at first sight. This Grande Dame was the first of many hotels on the island. Set in 27 acres of lush tropical woodlands and landscaped water gardens, it exudes a stylish air of peace and tranquillity. It also shares a cliff top with the Sentosa Golf Club that boasts two courses, lending a glorious seclusion to this tropical retreat. South East Asia has a well-developed ‘Resort Culture’ and the Singapore Resort and Spa is certainly up there with the best of them. Its most prominent feature is a spectacular lap pool surrounded by loungers and backed by a green wall of beautiful trees, From here, there is also a wooden walkway leading down to a popular beach. Perhaps this resort is best known for the Spa Botanica that has rewritten the pampering manual. After luxuriating through some of the many professional treatments, clients relax in an artistically landscaped garden where they can laze in a grotto next to a waterfall, or sunbathe on recliners around a sparkling pool.

Backing all of this is ‘The Garden’ - a cosy restaurant that converts the spa’s wellness principles into delicious gourmet meals. It is a fact that Singapore - which is half the size of Rhode Island - has more plant and tree species than the entire USA. This was evident on early morning walks when I discovered quite a few surprises about the western side of the island. Chief of these was The Cove, an extremely affluent residential suburb fronting the sea. Built around a harbour that housed luxury craft of every shape and size, it features some of the most expensive real estate in the world. A most convenient service offered by the resort is a free shuttle every half hour from 8am - 10pm to the massive Vivo City Shopping Mall some 5 minutes away. This is also an entry point for Singapore’s awesome MRT (Mass Rapid Transport System). This underground railway is one of the best in the world. Spotlessly clean, very fast, extremely efficient, and wonderfully air conditioned, it is really easy to use. This along with the half hourly shuttle would get you from the resort to most places in the CBD within 20 minutes. There is a T junction at the entrance to Sentosa. Turning left takes you to the peaceful serenity of the Spa. Bearing right leads to the mega-resorts, theme parks and attractions that give Sentosa its reputation as the playground of South East Asia. For the next 4 days we set out exploring some of the extraordinary activities on offer. First up was a heart pounding 60 km/hr sprint on Asia’s most extreme zip line. With pumped up adrenaline levels, we then enrolled for a calming Segway tour along the islands bicycle tracks and beaches after an initiation exercise. Surf was up at the Wave House. Here we watched first timers take a few tumbles in between virtuoso performances by more skilful surfers. Whilst there I caught a glimpse of the jet pack equipment for the new kid on the block. Although I didn’t see it in action, it is now firmly on my bucket list. And at the iFLY acrylic glass vertical wind tunnel adults and kids were kitted out in jump suits and crash helmets, awaiting their turn to leap into an upward rush of air under the guidance of a qualified instructor. There were no Voyager Miles, but it certainly looked like a lot of fun. Movies, it seem, may be moving from 3D into a 4D interactive format. At Adventureland, sitting in a large
24

comfortable armchair loaded on springs, rollers, jackhammers and all manner of high tech devices, I joined Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnstone and Michael Caine in a rollicking adventure. As their helicopter crashed onto a rugged coastline, a gust of cold wind blew across my face followed by some fine spray as we smashed onto the rocks, causing some serious jolts and wild gyrations. At the end of my escapade with Rocky and Michael (I felt that we were then on first name terms), I was both shaken and stirred. At night, the Siloso Beach strip comes alive with restaurants, bars, and various bands contributing to a festive atmosphere. There’s also the ‘Songs of the Sea’ multi-sensory extravaganza, featuring a live cast backed by pyrotechnics, water jets, brilliant lasers and computer imagery projected onto a cloud of fine mist sprayed into a cloud above the set. This was an astounding show using very advanced technology. One of the first structures on Sentosa was a breathtaking Cableway linking the island to Singapore. It is a thrilling ride giving the most spectacular views of the sprawling activity below. A large 49 hectare chunk of Sentosa East was independently developed by Resorts World at a cost of $US7 billion. It has been visited by 45 million people over the past three years, and pride of place in this mega-resort is the Universal Studio theme park. It was built along the lines of its famous sisters in Hollywood, Orlando and Japan, and features a jaw-dropping range of movie-inspired rides, shows and attractions. Resort World’s other show piece is a marine life park featuring the colossal South East Asia Aquarium, and Adventure Cove where one can slip down exhilarating water slides, interact with dolphins, drift along an adventure river and snorkel with 20,000 colourful reef fish. There are also six themed hotels and conference facilities for 12,000 delegates. Unfortunately we had run out of time by the time we got to the Resorts World complex and only saw enough to realise that with its size and breathtaking scope it deserves to be an article on its own. There really is something for everyone on Sentosa teenagers, serene-agers, and in-between agers. And the kids will love it – GUARANTEED!

creative skill developed during a very young age, “at a time when we had no books, pens or pencils”, has now become not only bread and butter for Mateus Alfeus, but has also put him on the map as one of the country’s most promising upcoming artists. As a child, Mateus entertained himself by sculpting objects out of clay, mud, wire and wood, natural and scrap materials he found around his home in Ondobe, a settlement in northernmost Namibia, near the border to Angola. Back then, clay was his favourite substance, because it was easy to come by, especially during the rainy season, and its malleability made it the ideal medium for experimenting in a creative manner. Upon finishing school, Mateus started off by doing carpentry and other odd jobs around his area, but as he says, “it has always been hard to find work.” In 2009, he was given a lucky break and invited to attend a workshop in the capital of Windhoek, “that had nothing to do with art,” but was rather focussed on public speaking and community engagement and development. During the course, he was introduced to the facilities at the College of the Arts, an institution where he felt right at home and that immediately reawakened his inborn passion for the arts. But it would be a timely process before Mateus would be in a position to live his dreams. He continued working odd jobs until he had saved up enough to take on the economic challenges of urban life and could finally enrol for a diploma in Visual Arts at the College of the Arts (COTA) in 2015. “I started exploring my surroundings for materials to work with and realised that scrap metal is found in abundance, especially on dumpsites and scrap yards.” Although he still liked “playing with clay”, it turned out to be a scarce resource in the city, and in the end it was a simple decision: “I focussed my creative efforts on the materials available to me in my immediate environment

and so it came that I majored in metal sculpting.” An imaginative array of barking dogs, birds in flight and pipe-smoking human faces started making their appearance from carefully arranged pieces of metal, welded together as if to capture his ideas in eternity. Despite being motivated and driven by his artistic side, like other artists, Mateus faces certain challenges. “The focus on art has gone beyond borders. Local artists don’t sell or make 8 Dominus Park, enough money out of their works and as a result can’t afford to Prosperita, Windhoek, work NAMIBIA as full-time artists and have to find other jobs to survive. My +264 (0)61 301 845 - stippshade@mweb.com.za - www.shadecentre.com dream is to make art recognised as a career in our society and to keep it alive in the fading Namibian art industry – this is my vision not only for self, but also for the arts sector in general.” Mateus is currently presenting his first solo exhibition, ‘RESCUED’, at the Project Room in Windhoek.

Give yourself a great review The long and short of your insurances, policies and life covers
W
hile the first quarter of the year is already out of the way, and you probably already have thousands of things on your mind, this is the ideal time of year to dust off all your life policies and insurances to reassess what returns you’re getting, what you’ve got covered and whether it all still meets your needs. What makes this the perfect time is that you’ve had some time to get used to your monthly budget, or if you haven’t set a budget yet, the first few long months of the year that’s usually full of unforeseen expenses are out of the way. Now that you’ve also finalised your taxes, see how you should better cover yourself, and comfortably review the contributions or payments you’ll make throughout the next financial year. For instance, looking at longer-term policies, such as study or pension plans, do you have an opportunity to adjust your contributions in order to increase the total value? We don’t only mean monetary, but looking at life insurance policies, many clients simply don’t know whether accidental death is covered under their policies. If your life cover lacks this, having a surplus in your budget can allow you to include this or other benefits. It’s not only in your personal capacity that you should review your policies and insurances.
On a commercial level, as part of managing a client’s wealth, the Simonis Storm team helps their clients ensure the continued health of their businesses through very competitive products, sourced from major providers. As a business owner, ask yourself whether there Is sufficient Business Contingency Cover in place that can pay off any creditors or suppliers’ debts, in the event of the death or permanent incapacity of yourself or another key member. There is also Buy and Sell Cover that provides for co-owners of a business to take cover on each other’s lives. This enables the remaining partner to buy the deceased or disabled partner’s shares. Not to mention that if you have employees, especially those employees who spend a lot of time on the road (Namibia does have one of the highest motor vehicle accident mortality rates in the world), whether they have the relevant and best cover. To owners of smaller businesses who have some extra capital for contributions, as part of diversifying risk, look at cover that can provide monthly payments should you lose your business or a considerable part of your income. A product such as this can give you a chance to get back on your feet.

Another cover sometimes in great need of a review is that of your short-term insurance policy. We all have it – and year on year we just sign off on the renewal notification. No stress, right? No, you should still review it from time to time. A little example: many Namibians aim at amortizing the cost of their vehicle or vehicles over a specific period; if it should be involved in an accident – you need to be sure its value is still sufficiently covered. Including your short-term insurance into this annual review period also allows you to take stock of your insured assets. Add anything you acquired through the past year, remove items you no longer require to be insured – or get a second opinion from one of our Simonis Storm short-term brokers, to see whether your current broker is really giving you the best offer. When it comes to life in general, and wealth management in particular, the best route to follow is to prepare for the worst-case scenario – but to expect only the best. By doing this you cover yourself over time, your assets and in the case of a business, the legacy you created. To find out what insurance products or policies are best-suited to your life and lifestyle, we encourage you to speak to a Simonis Storm broker or advisor. After all, it forms a core part of protecting your personal wealth.

rawing inspiration from the 20s and 30s with a nostalgic look and feel of past athletes, the creators of The Athletic Club & Social - Athos Euripidou and Brandon Kerzner – intend to serve up way more than great food and tantalising drinks. The curated space has been designed to showcase old, untold stories, and the building’s history is celebrated with trophies on vintage cabinets, framed newspaper clippings of stars who frequented the institution, and sports equipment and memorabilia that grace the walls and embellish the surfaces. Capetonians and visitors are in for a treat. “I felt that Cape Town, being an international city, needed a venue that celebrated its heritage; but more than that, I wanted to highlight stories of sporting oppression and the unrecognized sports enthusiasts in apartheid”, says Euripidou. The Athletic Club & Social is set in the heart of Cape Town in a heritage building, founded in 1900 by Herbert Tothill, a pharmacist with a passion for sports. It’s no wonder entrepreneur and restauranteur, Euripidou, was driven by a sense of place and purpose to create a space built around community. Renowned interior designer Debra Parkington, was responsible for the restaurant’s interior. Each of the three floors expresses South African contemporary style, mixed with vintage flair. The ground floor houses the restaurant, the first floor is home to a mural by artist, David Brits. One floor down is a second bar with private seating areas, ideal for private meetings, romantic dates, or downtime after a long week. A cultural fusion of the city’s richly diverse athletic history, this space evokes a nostalgic design fantasy of colonialmeets-modern.

At the front of the building, an outdoor terrace offers forever city views and a perfect place for sundowners and after-work drinks. There is a full canapĂŠ menu ranging from oysters through to hearty bowls, as well as free WIFI. The basement is dedicated to whisky fanatics with a vast selection of Japanese whiskies on offer. The walls and shelves are decked with memorabilia, and the space pairs casual with indulgence. Look forward to the smooth sounds of Disco, Soul, Funk, Jazz and Afrobeats, with guest DJs on select nights. The predominantly Mediterranean-inspired menu consists of affordable, delectable vegetarian, meat and seafood tapas. Visitors can also choose from a wide selection of beverages from any of the three bars. From the rich velvet fabrics and detailed fringing on the lampshades, to the vibrant wallpaper and marble counters, The Athletic Club & Social is an exclusive product with an inclusive feel.

Organic wines growing through Michelangelo Wine Awards Text by Emile Joubert Photographs supplied by Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards

T
he world of wine is filled with the kind of overdone terminology designed to confuse a disciple of logical thinking, as well as enough fads, fashions and trends to make a Vogue editor return to pig-tails, tie-died shirts and crimplene jackets. But like mindfulness or karma, “organic” is something which everyone thinks they should like, but few actually understand...
There is nothing inherently different about wine termed “organic” When one sees the “O” word on a label, the contents of the bottle will still be fermented grape juice, made exactly the same way as any other wine. The only difference is that said grapes were farmed organically. This means no nuking of vineyards with chemical sprays or pumping the soils full of artificial fertiliser.
Companion planting and harmless fertilisers – working together for a healthier planet Organic is farming as it was done in the old days before the chemical companies progressed to the agriculture industry. This implies that organic farming uses environmentally friendly – and people friendly - substances which do not require the wearing of gas-masks or space-suits during application. These methods also include using manure from animals and birds to fertilise the soils and the application of natural processes to eradicate pests such as letting natural predators loose on vineyard-chomping critters – we have all seen those rows of ducks waddling through vineyards while snacking on snails on the vines. Also tried and tested is companion planting: those pretty rose shrubs in the vineyards are not there for decoration –
both roses and grape vines are susceptible to diseases such as mildew and roses act as an early warning system.
Nature does as nature do When it comes to the wine itself, sulphur is still added as a preservative to prevent it turning into vinegar, along with the various fining agents required to ensure the fermented juice gets into the bottle in a state fit for human consumption. Is organic a fad? When one starts talking about soil and nature and terroir and all that stuff, there has to be a case for wine made from grapes grown in agricultural conditions that have been kept as natural as possible. This is why many of the world’s great wine-making regions, Burgundy and Bordeaux to name but two, are seeing evermore vignerons going organic. The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards was one of the first South African-based wine competitions to offer a category for organically made wines, bringing an overall awareness of this category and its producers to the public.
The organic winning wines of Waverley Hills In 2018 some of the country’s leading cellars featured among the medal winners, with the RX Group-sponsored Michelangelo Organic Trophy going to the famous Waverley Hills wine farm in the Tulbagh region for its Waverley Hills Grenache 2017. This farm, which has become synonymous with South Africa’s organic wine offering, also won a Michelangelo Double Gold for its SMV Shiraz Mourvèdre Viognier 2013 and Gold for the elegant Sauvignon-Sémillon blend from the 2018 vintage.

Waverley Hills is about keeping farming as close to nature as possible. “We fertilise with composts and manures and use cover crops, such as vetch and legumes soil improvement and as host plants for beneficial insects,” says cellar master Johan Delport. “We also allow some indigenous vegetation to grow in close proximity to the vines. These areas provide food and a natural habitat for the indigenous fauna to flourish, adding a healthy diversity to our vineyard’s eco-system.” But for Delport, the ultimate aim is to produce superb quality wine in a natural environment, and with Michelangelo trophywinning Grenache 2017 he certainly succeeds, being known in some South African winemaking circles as the Godfather of Grenache for his adeptness with the variety. “In the old days the farmers used to plant Grenache because it gives very big yields if the vineyards are irrigated quite a lot,” says Delport, launching into his story. “So they used to get massive volumes, but the quality of the grapes weren’t any good. The old wineries used this diluted Grenache for light dry red blends or for brandy. “During my time as winemaker at the then Citrusdal Cellars (now Piekenierskloof Wines), I discovered old Grenache vines in the Piekenierskloof area and developed a real obsession with the variety.” These days Delport maintains the tradition of making good quality Grenache at Waverley Hills. Made from bush vines, the Grenache Noir 2017 has a lovely rose-petal perfume, followed by a juicy sweetness and an almost spicy savoury character. No wonder that this light, refined accessibility has made Grenache one of the fastest growing red wine segments of the global wine market.
Org de Rac organic wines attracts international interest Another well-known organic producer is Org de Rac, based in the Swartland region and a frequent medal-winner at Michelangelo. At last year’s competition Org de Rac took Gold
medals for the Reserve Chardonnay 2017 as well as for its red blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, also from the 2017 vintage. Frank Meaker, cellar master at Org de Rac says that the South African organic category is beginning to gain an international reputation for excellence, with especially the Scandinavian countries showing a huge interest. “Our Michelangelo-winning Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot has been recognised by Swedish liquor authority Systembolaget as a bench-mark for organic wine,” he says. “Over the past few years Systembolaget has made a conscious effort to convince the Swedish market of the quality of organic wine from South Africa, with Org de Rac being in the fortunate position of helping lead the way. This is also largely thanks to wine competitions such as Michelangelo that have helped create an awareness of our country’s organic offering.” Being a pioneering organic wine estate in the Swartland since 2002, Org de Rac has grown to 54 hectares of vines covering a diverse spectrum of varieties. Meaker says the longterm goal is to retain what is best-suited as well as exploring with a bouquet of new varietal mixes to meet the ever-changing demands of the consumer landscape. “The local market for organic wines is definitely growing,” says Meaker. “Each and every wine industry prediction made for 2019 included the increasing demand for organic wines among modern consumers, and Org de Rac wants to increase its wine offering to create an awareness of the extent of the organic proposition,” he says. Alongside the Olifants River outside the town of Vredendal lies Stellar Winery, a well-known organic producer which also featured prominently at last year’s Michelangelo awards. The wines which were awarded in 2018 included The River’s End Chenin Blanc 2017 (double Gold), The Sensory Collection Chardonnay 2016 (Gold), The Sensory Collection Pinotage 2016 (Gold) and The Sensory Collection Shiraz 2015 (Gold).

And as the awareness of a healthier lifestyle grows and consumers exercise their rights to choices, the demand for organic and sulphur-free wine grows. So, too, is the category for organic wine entries in the 2019 Michelangelo Awards, expecting a growing number of entries in this hot, hip and happening wine category which South Africa does so well.
Going sulphur-free What makes Stellar unique is that they also produce a sulphurfree wine, having the specialist technology and know-how to do this, one of the few South African wineries to do so. This makes Stellar suited for the American market where, unlike South Africa, wines have to be made without any sulphur in the production process before they are allowed to carry the organic label.
Close to nature: organic or nothing Josef Lazarus, owner of Lazanou Organic Vineyards in Wellington, is no stranger to Michelangelo, having won the RX South Africa Organic Trophy in 2012, 2015 and again in 2017 with the Lazanou Chenin Blanc Chardonnay Viognier 2017. In 2018 Lazanou Organic Vineyards won a Gold and two Double Gold Medals - Double Gold for Lazanou Syrah 2015 and Syrah/Mourvedre 2016 blend and Gold for the Lazanou Chenin Blanc 2017. Josef says he has never considered farming in any other way than organic. “I believe that any kind of farming should be as true to nature as possible, and this includes grapes for making wine,” he says. “Less intervention in the vineyard and cellar, and I believe that this approach leads to wines truer to terroir than other farming methods.”
Do they taste better? “Well, you get good wines and bad wines, and that includes good organic wines and bad organic wines. But I like to believe organic farming gives you wines which express soil and climate more accurately than other methods.”

With vision everything is possible - the story of the mountain pass that has a dramatic view and is a gateway into the ancient Namib Desert...
54
APRIL 2019 | FLAMINGO
From one of Namibia’s highest passes, where the Khomas Hochland merges gracefully with the Namib Desert, you can sense the soul of the world. It has a large presence. The silence pounds in your ears. Looking across the Great Escarpment from an elevation of 1 676 metres, you know that you are in the place of eagles. Mountains mirror mountains tinged pink on the edge of the world and tawny grasslands flow in earthy waves on the valley floor, crowned by an infinite dome of blue sky. APRIL 2019 | FLAMINGO

W
e’re given the chance to experience Spreetshoogte Pass, one of the shortest and most dramatic routes to the desert, thanks to an industrious man, Nicolaas Andries Rymert Spreeth, and his vision.
O
r maybe it was sheer will, iron grit and more determination than many of us possess in a single lifetime. Born shortly after the turn of the twentieth century in 1904 on the west coast of South Africa, Spreeth moved to southern Namibia in his adult years to work as a foreman. In time he bought the farm Ubib at the base of the mountain to farm goats and karakul. But, living at the bottom of a mountain had its disadvantages. Provisions purchased in town arrived by bus on the plateau and had to be collected. For lack of a road, his team of donkeys clambered up zebra paths to the bus stop to collect the supplies. From there they made the return trip, carrying the provisions all the way back down to the farm, a laborious and exhausting undertaking. At the time, the Remhoogte Pass had already been built, but the route required a detour which took days to negotiate.
N
ot easily discouraged, Spreeth had a plan. He understood the wisdom of the old adage that every journey begins with a single step, and he understood that every mountain pass begins with one rock. Every time his donkeys went up the mountain, they would carry several quartzite rocks, which he would place along the route, thus slowly marking out a path. From the bottom of the mountain, his family watched the line of white stones grow as it made its way up the mountain, journey by journey.
I
n this way, Spreetshoogte (Spreeth’s Heights) Pass had its humble beginnings. During the war years, with no specific qualifications and without the convenience and ease of any machinery, Spreeth began to build a road using dynamite and manual labour. Because of the steepness, ramps had to be built to allow drivers to reverse in order to build up additional momentum and speed. Even today, with more robust vehicles, a paved road and a speed limit of 20km/hour, you can smell the acrid odour of overheated components as your vehicle struggles with the gradient.

N
icolaas had another vision: to make the superlative scenery available to everyone. This he also accomplished. He was particularly proud of the viewpoint at the summit of the pass which provides one of the most breath-taking vistas in Namibia of the desert plains in the arms of the Great Escarpment.
E
ven though the original clay-built Ubib farmhouse is now in ruins, Spreetshoogte Pass - between Nauchas and Solitaire - remains one of the steepest passes in Namibia. It enables travellers to traverse the mountainous route from Windhoek or Rehoboth and is regarded as one of the gateways to the Namib Desert.
W
e learn from Spreeth that often in life great endeavours start small out of pure practicality. Journeys begin step by step, massive trees grow from small seeds and grand ventures start from basics; but occasionally there are those folk who leap and there are always those who dream. And of course, we learn that everything is possible, one rock at a time.
Join Gondwana’s 3-day/2-night Sossusvlei Shuttle Safari, Safari2Go, and travel from Windhoek via the Spreetshoogte Pass to the Namib Desert. Overnight in the comfort of Namib Desert Lodge, at the foot of ancient fossilised dunes, and spend the following day exploring the spectacular red dunes of Sossusvlei. At the end of the day, hop aboard Namib Desert Lodge’s sunset drive to toast life from the crest of the fossilised dunes, overlooking some of the finest scenery the planet has to offer. “
They say that a home is where the heart is. Today, I’ll show you it can be more than that.” That’s how Abeer Seikaly began her Tedx Talk. Seikaly grew up in Jordan, and throughout her childhood, her studies, her adulthood and career, the concept of ‘home’ and the layers of meaning attributed to that word, have been a driving force for her work and her art. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design to do her Bachelor of Architecture and Fine Arts. She says, “During the spring term of sophomore year 2000, I took an advanced studio (course) where we were challenged to invent and examine fabric architecture for the use of an emergency shelter. The objective? To design a transportable
structure which served several functions, and provided shelter in a variety of weather conditions. We were asked to contemplate an idea that does not yet exist, and construct a story within a story. Little did I know that that experience would be transformative.” She began her exploration by describing and analysing the process of foetal development in the womb, and the process of giving birth as a cycle of growth: “This metaphor was the essence of my inspiration…leading me to think about ideas related to skin, structure and form. It directed me towards designing an architecture system that expanded and moved, and had the potential to become a shelter. As disaster is inevitably temporary

and constant in its movement; a shelter must be transient. Because disaster implies the breakdown of communities, the shelter must rebuild social interaction. Because disaster destroys the familiar environment, a shelter must transform what often remains. “These are the qualities upon which I both figuratively and even literally chose to base my shelter, and think about shelter.” “I realised that architecture is a reflection of our cultural values. And a home is a model to understanding our connection with the universe. A home is a vessel through which we perceive our place in this world.
Weaving a Home Project Sekaily’s structures are as fine and delicate as they’re strong and sustainable. There’s an ethereal beauty to them which moves way beyond mere functionality, and they exemplify her quest to transform a shelter into a home. The structures of the ‘Weaving a home’ project emanates from an accumulation of her own life experience of home, her sense of how home anchors and strengthens bonds, of her responsibility as an architect and human being, to craft something which listens to the needs and
wants of people who will make these their homes. She says, “This project exemplifies my ongoing search for the definition of home. A home is a sanctuary in and by itself; a space that allows us to heal, exist and to dream of our future, and most importantly, to be ourselves.” As the world faces a global crisis of displacement, creative and sustainable responses to this, need to go beyond mere housing. Abeer Sekaily’s Weaving a Home Project is one such response. Each home folds up, is weather proof, collects solar power, and harvests water. Its design ensures ventilation, warmth and cooling when needed. And it’s so good looking. Yes, that does matter. These structures are temporary homes, yet they have the potential to become so much more.

4 Photo Safaris is the inspiration of two award-winning wildlife photographers, André Cloete and Shem Compion. Both are wildlife photographers who have an inherent love of nature and travel. From there it was easy - they started C4 Photo Safaris to share the best wildlife and nature photography destinations with you. They say, “Our goal is simple: To get you into the best wildlife locations, in the best season with the best photo guides so you can take the best photos. It's as simple as that.” And this is exactly what they do: “Since 2004 we have taken our clients all over the African continent and the world to expertly photograph wildlife and nature. By providing only the best service we have become the largest specialist photographic tour operator in Africa.” Who better to assist you in honing your skills…in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations. Intimate Namibia will be led by Isak Pretorius. Flamingo asked C4 Photo Safaris a few questions:
Tell us something about Isak Pretorius? Isak was born to be a photographer, but before he discovered this, he was an engineer. Once he picked up a camera, his engineering career came to a swift end, and Isak established himself as one of the top bird photographers in Africa. The benefit of his engineering training is his flawless technical knowledge of camera systems and the post-processing software that accompanies them. He combines these skills to focus on bird-in-flight photography, where he has excelled to the point of being

awarded an unprecedented 8 awards in the FujiFilm-Getaway Photo Competition in a single year. His highest accolade was in 2013 when he was chosen as the winner of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year in the Bird Behaviour category, which undoubtedly proved that he's one of the world's best wildlife photographers. Today, Isak is a sought-after specialist wildlife and landscape photographic guide and full-time professional wildlife photographer. His passion for nature is fuelled by the reminiscence of a classic Africa, and his aim is to create conservation awareness for his continent's natural wonders. His discovery of nature's special moments at a young age shaped his aspirations of today: to showcase the beauty of his continent's pristine wonders in a creative way. He believes that this is the best way to protect Africa’s natural heritage. "We protect what we care about, so my objective is to get enough people to care about African wildlife by showing them how beautiful nature is." What sets Isak apart as a specialist wildlife and landscape photographic guide is his ability to get clients to take their own top photographs. If you want to improve your bird photography, Isak will guide you from approaching your subject, all the way through to managing your files and editing them to produce the highest quality image possible. Isak's simple and structured approach when tutoring clients enables immediate understanding of techniques and concepts. Other than birds, Isak has excellent knowledge of mammals, a trained eye for good landscapes, and has photographed extensively across the continent on photo workshops and tours. Isak is very involved in presenting photo workshops and leading photo safaris for C4 Photo Safaris. He has taken a keen interest in educating photographers about their surroundings, as well as teaching them the art of photography. He uses his knowledge of post-processing and cataloguing techniques to clearly show you how to get the best out of your RAW image. His teaching manner is so well regarded that he has been flown across the continent to present post-processing talks and workshops.
Describe an average day on a photographic safari? The aim of this photo workshop is to capture the amazing landscapes of Namibia. We always hope for the wispy, filamentous, tufted streaks of cirrus clouds that light up in pink half an hour before sunrise, and half an hour after sunset, to make our photos extra special. Therefore, we need to be at the photo shooting location very early in the morning and stay there into the early evening. A typical day means rising very early, even as early as 4am, depending on how far we need to drive and walk. The light gets harsh quickly, so we start making our way back to the camp an hour after sunrise. Then we have breakfast, followed by a photo workshop session at the camp. Here we help with the download of images, do a photo critique, and do photo presentations. All is done with the aim of helping clients with the technical and creative skills of photography, and teaching them how to improve and edit their own photos. We then have lunch and some time to rest, before heading out for the afternoon photo shoot. We start making our way back to the camp after sunset for a well deserved dinner, before retiring to bed and doing it all over again early the next morning.
68

EDITORIAL
And an average evening? Landscape photography is hard work, even harder than bird or wildlife photography. You don’t drive through the bush, holding on to long lenses while following leopards, or shoot hundreds of frames of colourful birds taking flight. But, because good landscape photography is all about the specific location, and waiting for the best light, it takes time to get to the location and time to wait for the best light. It involves long days and often requires walking for long distances with a camera bag and tripod. Like-minded people with a common goal already create a good atmosphere on all our safaris. We do enjoy having fun after photo shoots to celebrate our successes, so we travel with a hand-picked selection of good wines for the dinner table. There is always enough time on a safari, after dinner or on a drive to the next destination, to have casual conversations and lots of laughs. The evenings usually end with a drink around the camp fire, with the sounds of a jackal calling in the distance, just to remind us how privileged we are to enjoy these remote wide open spaces.
As a wildlife enthusiast with limited skills, what would I expect to get out of a trip like this? We are proud that we have a very high repeat client rate, and take comfort in the fact that this means we are doing something right. We welcome photographers of any competency level. We help beginners with the basics of photography, and get them up to speed quickly to create their own amazing photos, much to their own surprise and delight. The already competent

photographers benefit by learning new things about their cameras, and improve the creative aspects of their photography. We teach them things like camera settings for various effects, filters, live-view shooting for landscape photography, the art of a good composition, and all the software tools to edit their photos into a stunning portfolio. Many of our repeat clients just enjoy the carefree nature of our safaris, where they can relax while we manage all the logistics. They love seeing new destinations, having laughs and fun with us, and creating their own amazing photos with our help.
What’s the itinerary and accommodation? Luderitz Nest Hotel Situated just 5 minutes inland from Luderitz, Kolmanskop is the long forgotten site of one of the greatest diamond rushes in human history. nce you have completed a commercial pilot licence, qualifying as a flight instructor may be your next step and a beneficial one, as valuable experience will be gained whilst earning an income. With the necessary qualifications and sufficient flight experience, a choice of ‘flying office’ will depend on the individual, anything from Tourism, Agricultural, Geophysical to a first officer with an International airline. Qualified South African pilots are recruited to Europe, Middle East and Far East to pursue careers in Aviation.
How fast is the aviation industry growing? At present, 70 pilots need to qualify every day to meet industry demands within the next 10 years. Sky Flight Training based in Somerset West Paardevlei offers three career study programs to students. 1.

Sky Flight training introduced a full motion AATD “Advance Aviation Training Device” to the Western Cape in January 2019 to enhance flight training capabilities. We train and practice all flight manoeuvres to perfection before execution in the aircraft. There is a better understanding of the task at hand and save valuable time and cost to client when in the air. The AATD is equipped with several flight training programs approved by European and Federal Aviation Authority in the USA. In November 2018 Sky signed a training agreement with WFS to conduct practical flight training and certification of students using Western Cape airspace to its advantage. Sky aspires to provide a safe, quiet and accessible study environment within the Somerset West community that are accessible to the general public and our valued high school learners. Neuro Linguistic Programming
– change the way you think Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help you overcome limiting or irrational beliefs. Practitioner Bonita Graupe unpacks NLP, and shows how powerful it can be to effect critical changes in your life. Words by Bonita Graupe Photographs supplied

irst things first. What are limiting or irrational beliefs? Graupe explains, “They’re formed when we pessimistically generalise things. Limiting beliefs limit us in some way and are usually about ourselves and our self-identify. We need to consider the belief itself – ‘I am not good enough’ the implications of that belief, the effect that it has on us, and whether that belief is true or not.” “Most of our limiting beliefs are formed during childhood, up until age four. They may also be experienced as fears such as for spiders, heights, commuting at night by taxi, and so on. Limiting beliefs can cause disempowering emotions such as low selflove and self-worth. They usually originate with thoughts along the lines of ‘I do or I don’t, I can or I can’t, I must or I must not, I am or I am not, others are or others will’. We also limit ourselves in the corporate world – putting ceilings on our achievements, and believing we are not capable of learning a new skill. “These limiting beliefs may manifest in the physical body, and can cause health problems.” In Albert Ellis’ (1994) Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), he identified a number of dysfunctional beliefs that people often hold: ••
••
••
•• ••
••
•• •• ••
•• ••
It is a dire necessity for adult humans to be loved or approved by virtually every significant other person in their community. You must be competent, adequate and achieving in all important respects or else you are an inadequate, worthless person. People absolutely must act considerately and fairly, and they are damnable villains if they do not. They are their bad acts. It is awful when things are not the way one would very much like them to be. Emotional disturbance is mainly caused externally, and you have little or no ability to increase or decrease dysfunctional feelings and behaviours. If something is, or may be, dangerous or fearsome, then you should constantly and excessively be concerned about it, and should keep dwelling on the possibility of it occurring. You cannot and must not face life's responsibilities and difficulties - it is easier to avoid them. You must be quite dependent on others and need them - you cannot, in the main, run your own life. Your past history is an all-important determiner of your present behaviour. Because something once strongly affected your life, it should indefinitely have a similar effect. Other people's disturbances are horrible and you must feel upset about them. There is invariably a right, precise and perfect solution to human problems, and it is awful if this perfect solution is not found.
Why do we limit our beliefs? Many of our limiting beliefs originated through direct experience, mainly when we were young. They can be driven by fear. We were taught, through education, by those who are not always well informed. We use excuses to justify our failed actions and
apply it to the future. We decide beforehand that there is a possibility for us to fail…and we apply this to everything in our lives. We form all these assumptions about ourselves, about others, and about how we expect things to be in our world. The representation we hold of the world is our internal map based on our experiences and filters. Our worldview helps us understand and make sense of the world. Anthony Robbins says, “It’s not the events of our lives that shape us, but our beliefs as to what those events mean.”
How do you overcome limiting beliefs and empower yourself again? Limiting beliefs are mistaken as facts - to overcome them, there must be willingness and determination to do the hard work to rise above those obstacles. It is not always possible to change what happens, but it is possible to take control and change the way we react to the event. NLP has tools we can use to change the process of how we react. In order to overcome any limiting belief, you have to recognise that limiting belief. NLP uses a variety of techniques and tools to help overcome a limiting belief, and help us react differently to whatever happens. It is important to explore the impact of the limiting belief on us before we try new beliefs. Here’s how. Determine your goals, objectives and the outcomes you would like to achieve. These are the things you have been working toward but have been unable to achieve. There might be limiting beliefs preventing you from achieving these goals. Analyse why you want to achieve the goals, and the benefits you will derive from achieving them. »»
»»
Recognise the limiting belief and determine the source of it Consider what the belief is that is limiting you. Sometimes we make limiting choices without realising that they are based on limiting beliefs. You need to continue exploring until you get to the root cause and source of the limiting beliefs or fears. The source of the experience might be based on experiences, education, fears, faulty logic, and so on. »» Identify the falsehood By now you realise that the limiting belief has limited you in the past. Reflect on the false belief you were once told, or because it helped you at some stage in your life. »» Preparing Yourself for Change We use our senses to interpret and represent our world – in other words, our worldview. NLP uses sub-modalities to measure the emotional intensity of a limiting belief. When a person has a strong limiting belief, whether true or false, which is a stumbling block that prevents them from reaching a goal, the limiting belief is supported by emotionally intense sub-modalities. When we change some of the qualities of this sensory input, we change the experience itself. How do you picture the limiting belief in your head, what does it feel like,

what does it smell like, what does it taste like? You need to reduce the intensity of the emotional experience in order to be ready to overcome the limiting belief. »»
Substitute the limiting belief with a new empowering belief You need to create a new empowering belief to replace the limiting belief. Be sure to choose a realistic one that will help you to move forward. By choosing a new empowering belief, you must keep in mind the goals you have set for yourself. What benefits will this new belief yield for you? This new empowering belief must be motivating enough that you are fully convinced you will be able to achieve it despite any obstacles you might face.
new belief. Get to know the strategy followed by successful people who are already successful in this empowering belief. Imitate those who are already experiencing the success of the belief - speak to them and find out what process of thinking, feeling and doing they are following to live the empowering belief. There are many inspirational sources available such as autobiographic books, films and interviews, and so on. The more references you have that support your new belief, the more motivated you will become to implement it. These actions listed above will help you to develop the self-confidence needed to take action. Keep on reminding yourself how it will improve your life. »»
»»
Act as if this new empowering belief is already true for you
A person’s subconscious mind cannot distinguish between reality and visualisation. You need to strongly believe in the new empowering belief, and often visualise the feelings of success. What you focus on will grow, so in time, this new empowering belief will start manifesting for you. Implement ways to help you strengthen this new empowering belief. Some ways to do so is by collecting a number of motivational quotes to help remind you that you have the power and strength to achieve your new goals. Have the quotes ready at hand where you can easily read through them to remind you of your goals. Consider approaching successful role models, and talking to them about the strategies they employ to become successful in what they do. Look at motivational You Tube videos. There are many other sources to help inspire you to achieve your goals and support your new empowering belief. Your limiting belief will become less intense the more support you have for this new empowering belief. »» Gradually strengthen your new empowering belief Start building on the strength of this new empowering belief. Start creating evidence of it. Continuously visualise the successful you as if you have already acquired the new belief. See in your mind’s eye the actions you take, the way to talk to yourself, the successful result of the empowering belief, and the positive impact it has on your life goals. NLP offers a variety of tools to help you strengthen the ‘feelings’ of success. The process of anchoring helps to secure the sensation you experience in your body when imagining the successful you. You can make positive changes to your sub-modalities to strengthen the power of this
Prepare for this New Belief in Your Life You need to start preparing mentally and physically to ensure congruence when implementing this new belief. You will find it difficult to implement the empowering belief if there is still conflict within you about it. The empowering belief should be consistent with your values. Make the necessary changes to the required areas in your life in order to implement the empowering belief. You may need to adopt new habits: change your language patterns to support this new belief; maybe there are changes in your environment to be implemented; change your way of thinking. Analyse your strengths and how you can use them to integrate the new belief successfully into your life. »»
Start Using Your New Empowering Belief In the beginning, you might experience uncomfortable feelings when you take action to implement the new empowering belief. This is normal. Just keep on reminding yourself of the goal and how this new belief will support your life goal. Be persistent and committed to get through this stage. Failure is inevitable, don’t get discouraged. Fear of failure might be a great obstacle during this process. Implement a good strategy to help in making good decisions. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Tell yourself how proud you are of yourself and reflect on how you are a changed person. It is important to stay flexible. Sometimes it might be necessary to make small alterations to your new belief. You might discover new dormant limiting beliefs during this process. Be sure to handle them with the limiting belief transformation process.

ZORE X Core is a smart, electro-mechanical lock that can be attached to a semi-automatic gun; it helps to prevent unauthorized use yet it also ensures immediate usability when needed. This gun lock features a revolutionary combination dial that is designed specially for quick unlocking in an emergency situation, even in zero visibility. ZORE X Core offers the fastest way to go from locked firearm to disengaging, chambering a round and firing. The innovative locking mechanism uses a dial combination, the dial counts the clicks and then quickly recognizes the correct sequence. You don’t need to worry where to start and even about direction, it can be clockwise or counterclockwise to turn the dial, it doesn’t matter. This way, you can easily unlock your weapon without looking at it. ZORE X Core is a smart, chamber gun lock that allows you to choose up to 20 digits with up to 9 clicks for each digit. You can roll past the last digit and this lock would still recognize the correct combination and immediately unlock. In the locked mode, ZORE X patent pending cartridge sits in the chamber, it doesn’t apply any pressure to the gun, but any attempt to charge the gun can cause the cartridge to radially expand with 10 times the force being applied to it. It’ll prevent motion and immediately lock the gun. Powered by CR2 3.0V battery, it lasts up to 3500 locks/unlocks, or basically 2-3 years of standard use.

Borderlands Claptrap Talking Car Charger Fits Your Standard Cup Holder
Claptrap is back, it’s a unique character from Borderlands. CL4P-TP is a general purpose robot manufactured by Hyperion; it’s not just a machine, this robot is programmed with a personality that brags frequently yet expresses severe loneliness. Borderlands Claptrap Talking Car Charger wants to bring this cute robot in your car; it fits in your standard cup holder and his eye will light up when he’s receiving power. Claptrap also means “rubbish” or “nonsense” in archaic 18th-century speech. It’s a talking robot that would accompany you during your ride; even though the character is very talkative, this robot version only says three things: “Oooh… I finally got an excuse to turn this on”, “Hahaaaa! I am alive! Let’s get moving o’ noble henchman”, and “How ya feelin’ minion? Ya feelin’ good? I’m feelin’ good”. It’s pretty funny, however, just in case you are fed up with his nonsense, simply press the mute button. This is an officially-licensed Borderlands merchandise; you can plug it into a 12V vehicle power adapter, it is compatible with almost anything that charges via USB.

THE TRAVEL UPDATE APRIL 2019 VOL. 3, NO. 3
www.nwr.com.na
We are a proudly Namibian hospitality and service company. We manage resorts and camps within our National Parks across our beautiful country on behalf of the Namibian Government.
GROSS BARMEN RESORT Starting from as little as N$485 Key activities: Hiking and sight-seeing
NWR ADOPTS TO CHANGING TOURISM LANDSCAPE Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) has for the past few years focused its efforts in offering the domestic and international market the only opportunity to stay within Namibia’s National parks. Overtime, this has provided guests with the chance to enjoy an early morning game drive or experience a breathtaking sunset at Sossusvlei. However, due to the changing landscape and the unique needs of its guests, NWR has had to relook at how it differentiates itself and its product offering from its competitors. This has resulted in NWR strengthening its Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing and Events (MICE) and Tour Planning department with the aim of being able to offer tailor-made products for guests in order to provide an exclusive experience. Quite recently its Gross Barmen resort played host to 13th International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) African
Rhino Specialist Group. Whilst its Duwisib Castle and Hardap resort has played host to some very unique wedding themes. In addition to this, the MICE department has hosted different tours such as the Tshwane Legend Bikers Club Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) tour that saw over 50 Bikers and Jeep drivers touring Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe in 10 days. Equally, late last year the department organised an incentive for the Business and Intellectual Property Authority which saw over 70 delegates from the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) descending on Gross Barmen. “I must say that our incentives have become very popular for most local companies who want to compensate their top performers. For instance, last year we hosted the Namibia Light Tackle Boat Angling group at our Hardap resort for their angling competition. At the same time we have had a number of companies requesting for team building exercises aimed at boosting the morale of their teams. This has provided us with an opportunity to showcase our other abilities away from what we have become known for as a company. I, therefore, urge everyone to try us out to enjoy something different, says Ms Esther Ndilula, NWR MICE and Tour Planning Manager.
NWR AWARDED AS THE LEADING TOURISM COMPANY IN NAMIBIA
I am personally grateful that our efforts as an organisation are being recognised. Such accolades give the team and me every reason to continue on our current path. It is, for this reason, I am so grateful to our team who are the reason we were awarded.
Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) was presented with two Diamond Arrow awards from PMR.africa on 25 February 2019 as the leading organisation in tourism and conservation enhancement in Namibia as well as the leading tourism company in the country.
"With the foundation, we have laid, and this being the fourth time we are being awarded, I believe that our future looks bright as a company", concludes Mrs Hengari.
Esther Ndilula - MICE Manager (r) during the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) event that took place at Gross Barmen Resort
The award was a result of a research process whereby different companies were nominated and rated by respondents against specifi c attributes or criteria. NWR emerged as the overall winner within its categories and received the highest rating, which is a Diamond classification. Mrs Zelna Hengari, NWR managing director, could not hide her excitement when she received the awards on behalf of the organisation. “Being at the helm of the largest tourism company,
L - R: Talita Horn - Chief Financial Officer, Zelna Hengari - Managing Director and Matthias Ngwangwama - Chief Strategy and Projects Officer standing with the two PMR awards that NWR received
