wenty inexperienced teenagers from diverse backgrounds across South Africa built a Sling 4 aircraft. Moreover, they did it in a highly controlled environment under full supervision of qualified factory personnel, within two weeks in June 2018, under the guidance and supervision of The Airplane Factory, U-Dream mentors, and five team leaders from Denel Aviation.

From Cape Town to Cairo Teen pilot, author and motivational speaker Megan Werner’s passion to make a difference sparked the U-Dream project. Megan Werner founded U-Dream Global to inspire her peers to follow their dreams, by proving that the seemingly impossible can be achieved, with the right team and focused actions. Following final flight inspections and certifications, this U-Dream plane set off from Cape Town, destination Cairo, visiting nine countries and impacting thousands of lives during the programme.

The U-Dream programme seeks to promote STEM education and innovation; empower youth; develop skills; and provide aviation industry exposure. The teen co-pilots were joined by a support plane, which flew with their aircraft throughout the trip. Experienced, reputable pilots with extensive aviation experience piloted the support plane. These support pilots handled weather decisions, flight planning, fuel planning and general risk, and helped the teen co-pilots make timely, informed decisions. The trip had its fair share of challenges, but nevertheless, they landed safely in Cairo a few weeks ago, and a host of youngsters were over the moon! they dreamed it, they did it!

What is U-Dream Global? U-Dream Global is a non-profit organisation that depends entirely on monetary donations, materials, and technical guidance from corporates and individual sponsors. U-Dream Global’s Cape to Cairo Programme is an ambitious aviation outreach initiative for teenagers, devoted to promoting and supporting innovation, technology and entrepreneurship as necessary key drivers for Africa’s development and transformation.

Savannah Rocks Namibia Twenty-five year old Savannah Collins is not only rocking Namibia, but an international audience as well. Words by Klaus Rennack Photographs by Savannah Collins

S

avagely wide savannahs, deserted deserts, mounting mountains, wild wildernesses dominate Namibia’s landscape. Unreachable horizons alternate with close encounters of touchable rocks and stones. Grassland biomes compete with bush and shrubland. Farmlands occupy large areas and communal lands open up spaces. Sandy, grassy, bushy, rocky landscapes on ancient Gondwanian continental grounds, that is what Namibia is made of. Hard surfaces encounter soft layers, hard materials alternate with volatile substances. This is where continents separated and drifted apart around 200 million years ago. So where are we today in these semi-arid to arid conditions reinforced by droughts and rainless periods? Rich growth in vegetation fights with land degradation and bush encroachment. In this kind of environment, musical rock culture finds inspiration, reverb, strength, power and freedom: a fruitful backdrop for a genuine and truly Namibian rock lady like gorgeous Savannah Collins.

Namibia my Friend and more `First verse and chorus of `Namibia my Friend` Let`s take a walk with the wild horses, Just let our souls run free. Sit by the fire and tell our stories About the mountains in our dreams. Now I`m here … I`ve got the sun on my skin and wind in my hair, A new found freedom to go anywhere. Wide open spaces to clear my head and a Warm sunset before I go to bed. I know I`m loved Because Namibia you`re my friend.

Savannah’s latest, original single NAMIBIA MY FRIEND, has reached over seventy thousand views, in just five months, prior to its much anticipated release in December last year. It is a remarkable success for this Namibian born talent and performer. The Gondwana Collection, in collaboration with Savannah aimed to raise awareness for the wild horses, through this musical project, in remote parts of Southern Namibia. The team consisted of four people and Savannah’s Dachshund puppy – Minnie. They travelled throughout the south of Namibia for over a week, shooting at some of Gondwana’s most spectacular lodges. There are more upcoming projects in Savannah’s career to look forward to. A recent and spontaneous video collaboration with fellow Namibian musician and XFactor Germany winner Ees, will be released later this year, and after winning three gold medals at the Namibian Championships of Performing Arts, Savannah has qualified to take part in the world championships in Los Angeles in 2020. Also on her calendar is the Doxie Festival 2019, happening on September 28th in Windhoek. Savannah is part of the team of animal lovers organising the festival and she will also be performing along with other local artists on the day. The event is close to her heart, being the owner of two Dachshunds; it is aimed to raise funds for animals in need and is a first of its kind in the country.

In the recent past Savannah gathered experience from traveling to Europe into the sources of her bluesy rocking music style, that is so special not only in these latitudes. She explored the music scenes and had gigs in venues of London, Paris and Orleans. In 2017 she opened for Arno Carstens in Stellenbosch, Cape Town.

Savannah studied contemporary music, majoring in vocals and guitar, in Cape Town and played in prestigious venues and performed with the likes of Arno Carstens and Richard Pryor. Coming from a passionately musical family background the 25-year-old local musician is prominent not only in the Namibian rock scene, but also has spread her message globally, performing in venues in France and London in 2017. Our stunning rock lady with her distinctive vocal appeal can be heard and seen in live performances at local festivals in Namibia and can be booked for functions and events. Stars and Ashes Urte Remmert’s upcoming exhibition, Sternstunden und Aschenflug/Stars and Ashes, at the Project Room, will resonate deeply with those wrestling with grief, or coming to terms with questions around life and death. Words by Marita van Rooyen Photographs by Simone Kauert

AUGUST 2019 | FLAMINGO

EDITORIAL

I have been struggling with the thought of life and death and the meaning of it all… Charcoal was the first medium to resemble the fire that consumed the two cars and the people in them besides me. Collage was meaningful, as I could rip and tear the paper, overlay and fold and use old writings, sheet music, burnt diary pages, gold leaf, pieces of molten glass from the accident site and torn up old artwork.” In 2015, a terrible car accident changed Urte Remmert’s life. While she was saved by kind, considerate and brave people, her husband, whom she admired as her most honest critic, did not survive. “In my early morning meditations I mourned, not only my husband, but also my mother, three close friends, both my brothers and a little schoolgirl from my Grade three class.” As means to work through this traumatic experience, Urte started documenting her struggles, pain and sorrow. She describes her initial thoughts on “the topic and the development thereof” as embodied in sketches, scribbles, poems, articles, angry outpourings and small collages, all contained in a logbook.

“This writing down and sorting, reading and meditating has helped me not only to heal my wounds, but also resulted in four angry charcoal drawings, and 18 collages – some colourful, some in monochromatic tones”. Her emotional outpourings culminated in the artistic display, Stars and Ashes, a reflection of her healing process, and deeply personal body of work. To Urte, making and creating art is “a healing process in which my whole being is involved, the human condition is questioned and finally my mind finds liberation and redemption”. While some of her work is self-labelled “dark and violent”, others “eventually become lighter in colour and themes”. As accompanying thoughts, the artworks are completed by poetry from the artist, as well as by some of the great poetry masters. By presenting her manifestation of trauma, Urte hopes that the exhibition will facilitate viewers to talk about death and dying, feelings, mourning and forgiveness, and more than anything, the life we should lead. “Above all our everyday troubles, our disappointments, loss and deep pain, there is one eternal wisdom that makes our life worth living and complete: To love and to care.” Apart from many people, old and young, that assisted her in

her time of grief, she also had the privilege to be able to throw all her confusion and anger at a friend who patiently stood by like a wailing wall! 'I have loved, So I have lived'. “This thought is the essence of my exhibition.”

About the Artist Urte Remmert’s career spans more than 42 years, both as art teacher at Namibian and German schools and as practicing artist in her own time. In recent years, as a member of the Swakopmund Arts Association Committee, she assisted in turning the historic Woermannhaus Gallery into a hot spot for art and design exhibitions, through projects like 'Night of the Galleries' and 'Little Big Things'. Before the passing of her husband, her work was inspired by Namibian and African issues like gender-based violence, poverty, intolerance and exploitation of the environment. Similarly, human relationships, women and children played an important role in her artwork and teachings. Her focus has now turned to creating work that helps in coping with the accident’s trauma and getting to grips with questions of life and death.

Volatility And The Case For Market-Neutral Investing Markets look set to revert to the ‘old normal’ as QE-fueled liquidity dries up

S

everal growth-supportive factors that equity and other markets have grown accustomed to over recent years are now reversing, with the result that the dynamics in play during the pre-quantitative easing regime are likely to return to favour. That’s the view of Nafees Hossain, Fund Manager at Prescient Investment Management who said “markets are likely to revert to the old normal”. “We see risks from the end of the quantitative easing era and rising protectionism that are conducive to higher volatility for financial markets. In addition, downside risks to global growth have risen with protectionist rhetoric and trade tensions a key challenge to the world economy. “Other factors that could slow growth include European politics, China’s tough balancing act, and oil price volatility,” he commented. With the US Federal Reserve hiking interest rates and actively shrinking its balance sheet, the European Central Bank is set to join in with the Bank of Japan not too far behind, Prescient Investment Management expects that declining liquidity will have an impact by way of increased market volatility. “While consensus is for global economic growth to slow but to remain at decent levels, ongoing trade tensions, monetary tightening and uncertainty regarding growth will keep volatility high. With risk assets more sensitive to macroeconomic factors, and political uncertainty playing an increasing role, there is a strong case to be made for market-neutral investing, Hossain said. Market-neutral investing is an investment style that seeks to gain whether markets are up or down, while avoiding some

form of market risk entirely, typically by hedging. The term refers to a group of investment strategies that try to neutralise certain market risks by taking offsetting long and short positions in related instruments. The idea is to limit exposure to asset price changes prompted by macroeconomic shifts or changes to market sentiment. Marketneutral investing is likely to find favour when markets are making investors nervous. Hossain said interesting literature exists where it is argued that market neutral/statistical arbitrage strategies are implicitly “long volatility”. According to the analysis, pair trading strategies seem to have a positive and statistically significant exposure to market volatility. A pick-up in volatility typically has a positive impact on the returns of the strategy. As volatility increases, more pairs tend to diverge from their equilibrium relationship, but they also tend to revert to their historical mean levels quicker. “A pick-up in volatility would therefore also be associated with more pair trade opportunities and with a lower holding period for these trades. With the QE regime coming to an end, credit spreads widening, economic and political uncertainty increasing, we believe that this will result in more earnings and balance sheet volatility. “Hence it is not surprising to see the strategy having come back to profitability in 2018. We are confident that systematic statistical pairs trading will keep rewarding investors this year as volatility increases and arbitrage opportunities reappear,” said Hossain.

Travelling via the Skeleton Coast from Swakopmund to Palmwag and Epupa Falls elicits a thrill of excitement. It ticks all the boxes for the adventurous at heart and adds a couple more . . . So long Swakop and civilization. Heading on the salt and gravel roads to the more remote fence-free reaches of Namibia, home to desert elephant, rhino and lion, and further north to the semi-nomadic Himba people, must rate as one of the most exhilarating adventures in the country. And, although there are routes to the same destinations with a touch more tarmac, I thought that might take some of the fun out of the journey. Wouldn’t it?

I wasn’t sure, but I had chosen the more adventurous option. When I said sayonara to the team at the Delight Hotel, I drove through the mist that had replaced the sweltering east wind, which had flung desert sand gleefully around like a child discovering sand for the first time. The chilly coastal weather had now returned, and it had been time for hot water bottles and soft blankets, things that would quickly become superfluous as I ventured into the warmer north. The mist, however, wouldn’t be that easily shrugged off and followed me all the way to the Ugab Gate, entrance to the infamous Skeleton Coast. Along the way I passed the seal colony at Cape Cross, fields of lichens and tables of pink salt clusters sold by salt workers on an honesty system - if you like a piece, you drop a few dollars into the container nailed to the table. The desolate coast is a popular fishing haven and signs to well-known fishing spots dot the road. Some are marked by the old method, the miles from Swakopmund. Others are more descriptive. ‘‘Sarah se gat’ (‘Sarah’s fishing hole’ - named after a wellknown fisherwoman), ‘Bennie se rooi lorrie’, so named when

young Bennie left his favourite toy truck on the beach. ‘Baklei gat’ – ‘Argument hole’, for reasons unknown, but guessed. And ‘St. Nowhere’, for obvious reasons.

Only two vehicles passed me on the 103km stretch to the Springbokwasser gate, where I left the coast and veered inland. The veterinary fence, preventing animals crossing from north to south and thus spreading disease, kept me company on my left, and to my right I discovered a treasure-house of welwitschia. The taxonomy of the unusual large desert plant, sometimes referred to as a living fossil, befuddled scientists for many years until they simply gave up and classified it in a family of its own.

light and phone, and a teammate to keep him company. It was clear that I had now entered Namibia’s wild west.

The sun was already dipping in the sky when I stopped on the roadside to chat to Willibard Ketjivandje, a long-time road grader, who told me that there is a healthy population of lions and elephants in this north-western region. He was thankful for his bed in the truck, a solar panel to charge his

The daunting skulls-and-crossbones graphics on the Ugab gate sent a chill down my spine. This coastline was, after all, named after the whale and seal bones that washed up on its desert shores, and the flotsam and jetsam from the many ships that have come to grief in its treacherous waters. Contrary to belief, there is not an assembly of shipwrecks decorating the beaches. They break up quickly and disappear into the sand and sea, and only the most recent remain. I had stopped briefly south of Henties Bay at the 2008 wreck of Zeila, a fishing trawler whose towline broke in the early hours. It has been taken over by cormorants roosting on its rusting hulk and as an attraction along the coastline provides a place for the stone sellers to ply their wares. But, soon after the Ugab gate, I discovered the wreck of the South West Seal, a 90-ton South African fishing vessel that caught fire and beached here in 1979, its ribs now poking through the sand at the waterline in perfect shipwreck fashion. A few whale bones lay adjacent to it, jackal tracks etched the beach, the sun sparkled on the waves and besides the singing of the surf, it was quiet. There was not another soul around. I gulped it all in appreciatively.

The Huab River valley stretched around me flaunting its loveliness: a green line of trees marking the underground river juxtaposed against the dry surroundings. But, when I turned towards Palmwag, I had to gasp at the magnificent landscape. A series of table-topped mountains and rocky land tinged a deep basalt red was dotted with green from the rod-like euphorbias and the robust mopane and shepherd trees. The superlative beauty took my breath away. The turnoff soon appeared and as the sun did a final bow in the sky, I drove into Palmwag, positioned in a small oasis of makalani palm trees that mark the underground watercourse of the Uniab River.

Palmwag My striking home for the next few days forms part of the 582 000-hectare Palmwag Concession, a vast conservation area with an abundance of wildlife. Palmwag collaborates with neighbouring conservancies, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and Save the Rhino Trust to safeguard this rich wild heritage, offering guests an extraordinary African experience. It’s a partnership where everyone benefits, including the wildlife. Some of the animals, like Jimbo, the old elephant bull, venture regularly into the lodge grounds and campsite. He had gone walkabout when I arrived, presumably snacking in someone’s garden. With a healthy choice of activities, I started off with a drive into the concession to view the Aub Canyon in the morning, and then joined a guided walk from the lodge in the late afternoon. The guide filled us in on flora, fauna and geology as we happily stretched our legs. The small gradient provided the perfect view of the lodge from the hillside. I breathed in the beauty and the clean, unpolluted Damaraland air. The next morning, I was up before the birds, showered as per instructions using no scented soaps or lotions and donned all of my winter woollies to go rhino tracking in the nearby conservancy with the conservancy rhino rangers. It was our lucky day. The rangers spotted a black rhino and her calf on a hillside in the distance and we quietly made our way there. With the ‘all clear’ from the rangers, who gauge the wind and the rhino’s mood, we edged forward

to about a hundred metres away. Black rhino are known to be bad tempered and a mom with her calf added the extra edge to the experience. When the calf lay down to sleep - and with no need to stress its mother, we slowly backed off and returned excitedly to the vehicle where the rangers explained how they identify the rhinos and the records they keep to monitor each individual. We had apparently met Matti, born in 1999 and mother to three calves. They also informed us that most of the rhinos in the conservancy had been dehorned to prevent poaching. Matti seemed none the uglier for the lack of a horn, and it amazed me how such huge and powerful animals could be slaughtered for horns that are nothing more than keratin, just like our finger and toe nails. Lunch at the pool bar and a sunset drive into the rocky hills filled the rest of the day. As the land shone in the late afternoon light, we had the chance to be awe-struck by the landscape dressed in her finest colours. We turned towards the sun and gave it our full attention, and its due respect, as it sank into the horizon. A roller coaster road of dips and rises led out of Palmwag towards Sesfontein. A series of river washes and the winding road meant slow going until the road levelled out closer to Opuwo. The frontier town of Kaokoland is always a good place to stock up and fill the fuel tank. It’s an intriguing place where Himba, Zemba and Hakahona

Omarunga stroll the dusty hot streets in traditional garb and Herero women sashay along in their long dresses among their contemporaries in more conventional modern attire. It is a step into another world, a transition which is reinforced on the drive northwards to Epupa, where Himba live as they have done since time immemorial.

life seemed to flow at a different and more sensible pace. Eventually, after adding an extra day to my booking, I could delay no longer. On the road, Himba women were once again flagging me down for a ride, providing for some more interesting experiences.

It seemed like everyone was flagging me down on the Sunday afternoon for lifts; first school children who needed to return to school and afterwards a Himba woman who wanted a ride to the next village. With no common language to communicate, we ended up laughing as she and I, regardless of our differences, inherently understood that we were just two human beings who laughed and loved in the very same way.

Back in Opuwo, I turned southwards to Kamanjab and then Khorixas. Someone had inconveniently pressed the fast-forward button and my trip was fast coming to an end. My last night before returning to Windhoek was spent at Damara Mopane Lodge. It seemed that the journey was all about oases of varying types. In the midst of a mopane woodland, Damara Mopane’s chalets have gardens filled with vegetables. Scarecrows, sunflowers and a vibrant selection of greens make this a sweet spot on a journey, and the fresh food provides a nourishing dinner feast.

Although baobabs along the roadside herald the proximity of Epupa, it is only when you drop down to the Kunene River and spot the belt of makalani palm trees that you know you have arrived at this small African settlement. Omarunga Epupa-Falls Lodge, set on the riverbank under the palms, radiates Epupa charm. Here, the wind whistles through the palm trees, rosy-faced lovebirds chirp as they fly from tree to tree, mourning doves chrrrrr in avian contentedness and the gentle song of the falls, a short distance downstream, lulls you into a peaceful reverie. Amongst the must-do’s in this magical destination is a sunset overlooking the falls and a visit to a Himba village.

After a good night’s sleep, it was back on the tar travelling southwards to Windhoek. The extraordinary opportunity to experience sweeping landscapes and cultures of old remained with me, and perhaps always will. It tugged on my heartstrings and even as I approached the city, I could feel it calling me back. Somewhere deep inside I knew that if Life granted me a second helping, I would grab hold of it with both hands – by the horns or whatever I could, and that I would return to ride the wild west rodeo once again. by Ron Swilling

Guided by Ruiter, one of the Kaokoland Guides who has been brought up in the area, the visit to a nearby Himba homestead was an informative experience, respectful of the lives, privacy and customs of the family. Ruiter guided us through the village explaining traditions and dress, and enlightening us about this fascinating group of people who live in these remote areas and who are gradually being influenced by the western world. Entering a hut, I noticed that the woman’s adornments filled the wall, like a western woman’s would, just made of different material and presented in a different way. The cool mud and dung hut felt cool, safe and comfortable and I had the urge to curl up and go to sleep. It was difficult to leave Omarunga, a peaceful retreat of wood and thatch. And it was difficult to leave Epupa, where

Barker and Quin: a home-grown success story Text by Lorraine Immelman and Emile Joubert Photographs by Liza van Deventer

arker and Quin, South Africa’s leading producer of premium natural tonic water, has joined the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards as a headline trophy sponsor. The Paarlbased drinks company, which was founded in 2016 by oenology doctorate Hanneli van der Merwe and Chris Wium, has grown into one of South Africa’s success stories in the mixed-drinks market. A strong local customer base is complemented by markets for its range of tonic waters in 13 countries world-wide.

The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards is Africa’s largest drinks competition which attracted over 2 200 entries last year. It is also the only local wine and spirits show to be judged by panels comprising a majority of experts based in foreign countries, allowing entrants to be assessed by international critics.

Giving gin a lift As of 2019 Barker and Quin will sponsor the Michelangelo Gin Trophy. Since the explosion in the popularity of gins in the global marketplace, as well as the dynamic increase in South Africanbased distilleries, this has become one of the Michelangelo’s most exciting categories, with a total of 70 gins entered in 2018. And Barker and Quin Tonic Water; well what a success story. Hanneli says the idea for Barker and Quin was sparked during a business trip she had taken with her business partner, Chris Wium, when both were employed by a company supplying corks to the wine industry. “During a visit to Portugal, where most of the world’s cork is produced, I noticed how many gin and tonic options were on offer in the restaurants and clubs,” she says. “At that time the craft gin market in South Africa was just taking off, but I couldn’t find quality, all-natural tonic waters locally.” As the first woman to obtain a PhD in oenology from the University of Stellenbosch, Hanneli simply decided to make one herself. After experimenting at home, which included using a Sodastream to add the bubbles, she and Chris tried and tested, and knew there was something there. But having a tonic is one thing - they needed comment from a gin expert. “We needed an expert opinion, so we took it to Pete Gottgens at Asara Wine Estate, home to Sansibar Gin Lounge. After tasting it, he put in an order for 60 bottles a week right there and then!”

All in a name Now well on their way to creating their first product, all Chris and Hanneli needed was a name. They came up with what they thought was a winning title – Green Fire. The design team working on their label, however, wasn’t convinced. “Haumann Smal Design Studio in Stellenbosch came up with three pages of name suggestions,” says Hanneli, “and Chris and I pointed to the same concept name: Barker and Quin.” The name is derived from the main ingredient of tonic water: quinine sourced from the bark of the cinchona tree. The design team then created a story around historical figure John Ross, introducing two new characters – a fox terrier named Barker and a parrot named Quin who accompanied him on his travels. The brand was launched in August 2016, with the Finest Indian Tonic. Barker and Quin uses only natural ingredients sourced from reliable, eco-friendly suppliers. The tonics include quinine from the bark of cinchona trees, fresh mountain spring water from the Breede River Valley, pure sugar cane, zesty citrus extracts and Indian spices. Upon release, the response to the product was incredible.

Within eight weeks of producing their first batch, all 36 000 bottles sold out. By September 2017, they had both left their previous jobs to work full time on Barker and Quin. Of course, it has not all been plain sailing. “Initially we were a small company doing our own deliveries,” says Hanneli. “But as the volumes increase, this is no longer possible, putting you in the hands of someone else who might not have the same priorities.” They have added four new products to the range: the lowsugar tonic Light at Heart and three South African-inspired flavoured tonics – Marula, Hibiscus and Honeybush Orange. The company now exports to 11 countries (England, Australia, Germany, Dubai, Belgium, Canada, Mozambique, Nigeria, Namibia, Sweden and Mauritius) and have created a nonalcoholic botanical drink called John Ross. And so what brought them to target Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards with a sponsorship? “Barker and Quin finds the Michelangelo Awards the ideal partner for its range of premium tonic waters made from natural products,” says Hanneli. “Chris and I have both worked closely with the wine and spirits industries in our previous professional lives and recognise the increased demand for premium products driven by strong brands,” she says. “Barker and Quin’s ethos of quality, a product based on natural ingredients and an engaging and exciting brand fits perfectly with that of the reputation and image of Michelangelo.” Chris says the strength of the Barker and Quin brand, together with its status as the only naturally produced local tonic water, has allowed it to find a gap in the market.

Catering for the more selective modern consumer “Due to the diversity of products in the spirits sector, modern consumers have become more selective,” he says. “Barker and Quin’s image of being premium and natural has managed to garner a loyal following among consumers who are looking for a product that is not part of the mainstream in terms of brand positioning and flavour profile. The uptake from the market has allowed us to grow sales and expand our range of flavours. The association with Michelangelo, its international judges and the spirits entries which the competition attracts, is a great opportunity to elevate our profile and to be noticed as a leading South Africa tonic water brand.” Lorraine Immelman, founder and CEO of the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, says Barker and Quin is an ideal mix for the competition. “It is the go-to brand of tonic water for many of our gin and other spirits entrants due to its superb quality, and the packaging and name is the kind of fashionable proposition that will truly benefit the status of the Michelangelo Awards,” she says. “As a true South African success story we also look forward to introducing Barker and Quin to our foreign judges with a gin and tonic, the latter being Barker and Quin, of course.”

Driftwood Sculptures Edited by Anne Schauffer Photographs supplied by Tony Fredriksson

ony Fredriksson is one of the few who celebrates the work of termites. Contrary to their bad press, they’re effectively part of his creative team. Their industrious work in wood creates channels and pathways which add an entirely different dimension to this, the source material for his sculptures. So, too, beetles, dam and sea water, and other forces which alter the integrity of the wood, and create mystical shapes, lines and patterns. He’s constantly on the look out for inspirational pieces changed in some form by water or carved by insects, and he stores them meticulously in his wood ‘library’ knowing that one day, it will form part of something greater. His wood is sorted according to types, shapes and sizes, and is able to be accessed at all times when he needs a very specific piece. Tony creates his own sculpture as well as commissioned work. When it’s his own, it usually begins with a piece of driftwood which not only inspires him, but its form and shape suggest a part of an animal, a fish, a person. From that piece, the scale of the artwork is determined, and he then sketches the entire sculpture to scale. Fredriksson often spends an inordinate amount of time researching the piece. What is the underlying musculature of

the cat, even shapes of internal organs, what posture will it be in, what age, attitude, mood will it portray? Looking at his work, the depth of research is clear, and adds another layer to these extraordinary sculptures. When he’s working, Fredriksson uses a range of cutting devices to shape, chisel or sand a piece, so that it fits securely – like an interlocking puzzle – alongside the neighbouring piece. It’s critical that together, the sculpture is strong. He also wire brushes any loose wood, sands off any splinters or sharp edges, that there is a tactile as well as visual appeal to the piece. Zimbabwe-born Fredriksson is a fine art graduate of the Eastborne College of Art and Design in the UK. Today, he lives in South Africa, and although he’s known for his other art forms, it’s his sculptures which have totally captured the imagination of so many. For him, they’ve become an all-consuming passion, and he admits to being extremely driven while working on a piece. Every piece tells a story…which, if you enjoy story-telling, you’ll be able to prize very easily out of him…as to where each piece of that sculpture originated. Was it a weathered piece of some ten years old, found underwater, and beautifully scarred by wave action…or did a friend pick it up on some beach, and what has been its journey to that point? Common questions asked by prospective buyers are, What about bugs in the wood? Fredriksson says, “The sculptures are frozen for 3 to 5 days at -25°C to kill any bugs or eggs that

may still be in the wood (work going overseas is fumigated so as to obtain a customs certificate.) Most of the wood I collect is very old, dry and no longer of interest to the insects. The termites vacate the driftwood as soon as it is dry to seek shelter underground. Furthermore I wire brush and sand any debris off the wood. “The sculptures are not made to withstand the outdoors, but Fredriksson says clients can order them cast in bronze or in a marble composite. Recently asked how the driftwood lasts outdoors, he replied drily: "They are valuable works of art - if you put one of my sculptures outdoors in the elements with the Mona Lisa, mine would outlast the painting." Each piece of wood is sanded and glued, screwed and in some cases wired in place. All the screws are hidden and the completed sculpture is given a wash and a matt sealer. “Indoors, the sculptures can last indefinitely.” Driftwood art began as a craft for beach houses, so there is a perception that they are decor objects. No longer. Since they entered the art market, they have been in demand by a world willing to wait up to two years for one. Fredriksson says, “My first Rhino sold for R15 000 in 2010, was resold for R24 000, and a year after that, R80 000.” Whether commissioned work, or something he feels compelled to create, Fredriksson’s driftwood sculptures are exceptionally beautiful, as those fortunate to own them – from hotels to international collectors – know.

or many a famished world traveller, hotel restaurants are where their dining dreams go to die. Notorious for overpriced food, underwhelming entrées and barmen only passingly familiar with a Cosmopolitan, these dens of last ditch despair are certainly nothing like what’s on offer at Swakopmund’s sprawling Strand Hotel. While plenty can be said about each of Strand’s uninterrupted ocean views, its understated and sophisticated rooms, plush spa, opulent gold elevators and charming old world accents, as much can be extolled about the hotel’s cuisine. Boasting four restaurants and an ice cream parlour, each of which have been seamlessly woven into the very fabric of Swakopmund’s social scene, Strand is that special place where tourists and locals come together in a lively clash of terrific travel adventure and daily Namibian life. Introducing Farmhouse Deli, Brewer & Butcher, Welwitschia Lounge, Café Mole and Ocean Cellar Oyster and Wine Bar as you check in, Strand Hotel effectively gives you the five stops on an unofficial food tour. A culinary exploration showcasing some of the oceanside town’s very best restaurants literally on Strand Hotel guests’ doorstep. After you’ve been checked in by the hotel’s unfalteringly friendly staff followed by the gastronomic lay of the land, the inherent challenge is easy to accept.

Loosen your belt buckle, get some fresh Atlantic Ocean air and eat at each hotel restaurant before your stay is over! To begin your unofficial food tour at the top of the morning, drift into Farmhouse Deli. The large, rustic restaurant where chef Herbert van Schalkwyk presides over salmon towers, game pastrami, eggs every way, acai bowls, assorted cheese boards, bread displays, deep wooden buckets of berry compote, flaky croissants and all manner of confectionery like the Willy Wonka of breakfast buffets. If there is a more lavish local breakfast spread, there is a heaven. If not, Farmhouse Deli serves and takes the cake. Open from 6am and the haunt of locals popping in for a cup of Slowtown coffee after a jog, languidly indulging in the breakfast buffet or tucking into a full English breakfast a la carte with their families, this delicatessen, wafting smooth jazz and overlooking the sparkling Atlantic, is the place to settle in for an instantly good morning. Once breakfast is over and you’ve returned from a dune adventure or the sea, Brewer & Butcher is your next food tour treat and a place to unwind. No less than a large German-inspired steakhouse with an ocean-facing terrace, nighttime fire pits and the Swakopmund Brewing Company’s microbrewery producing traditional Helles and Märzen on site, beer lovers would be remiss not to take a

load off, pull up a bar stool and enjoy some seriously enticing beer pairings. Roasted bone marrow, Namibian game of the day, Jack Daniels baby back pork ribs and house smoked beef brisket all go great with a Märzen. Brewer & Butcher’s pulled pork burger with jalapeno coleslaw recommended with amber ale or a Skeleton Coast seafood pot with spinach ravioli served best astride a Helles. If juicy cuts of free range meat and ice cold beer aren’t your thing, an after adventure alternative is Strand Hotel’s Welwitschia Lounge. Here the Hampton’s style living is easy and to eat there are bierhappen - sticky pork belly bites glazed in soy sauce, honey and chili, smoked bratwurst skewers, beer battered onion rings with smoked garlic mayo and cheesy bacon fries – replete with an outdoor ambience just begging for a coconut and cranberry mojito or something sparkling from each of the hotel restaurant’s extensive wine lists. The barmen, bless their souls, take requests, cocktails with names like Coastal Breeze, Sizzling Desire and Purple Volcano, light up the daily specials board and a variety of cakes and pastries are available if the mood is more high tea than naughty. ight in the heart of the Mother City, between St. George's Mall and Green Market Square, the Gorgeous George is a melting pot of Cape Town's unique cultural diversity and history. Guests are immersed in South Africa’s dynamic design scene throughout the 32 rooms and communal spaces including a rooftop restaurant, pool and bar. The hotel is set on the only tree-lined pedestrian avenue in Cape Town, framed by heritage buildings just below the historic Company's Garden and overlooking Green Market Square - a short one-kilometre walk to the V&A Waterfront or just a 10-minute drive to Table Mountain and world renowned Clifton and Camps Bay beaches. Gorgeous George was created from two beautifully restored heritage buildings connected by a rooftop bar, and is the first to join the Design Hotels™ stable, a hand-selected worldwide collection of privately owned and operated design forward and culturally rooted hotels. International award-winning interior designer Tristan du Plessis has created a concept celebrating timeless and contemporary African design that showcases locally manufactured high-end South African decor. furniture have been sourced from David Krynauw, Gregor Jenkin, Studio 19, Douglas&Co, and Dokter and Misses, while custom murals from artist David Brits are featured in every room. More than a hotel, Gorgeous George is where local design and boundary-pushing innovation meet, creating an inner-city gathering place for both locals and the well-travelled. Gorgeous George has 32 luxe rooms ranging from studios to 1 and 2-bedroom suites featuring industrial tones of raw, exposed concrete and steelwork, blended with modern Victorian design elements. Each room is kitted out with an eclectic mix of handpicked treasures and statement pieces sourced from local and international designers and finished with custom handpainted wall art by David Brits. Gigi Rooftop is the restaurant at Gorgeous George. Conceptualized by Executive Chef Guy Bennett, it will offer fresh and inspirational dishes to thrill the palates of both local foodies and international travellers. With extensive knowledge and passion for food, Bennett has worked with top South African chefs including Reuben Riffel, Michael Deg and Bertus Basson, and most recently helmed Grand Provence in Franschhoek. The Gorgeous George bar is a place to indulge. Meticulously

crafted cocktails and a selection of local and international wines and spirits will be poured by renowned in-house mixologist Jody Rahme and served round the clock. Jody began his mixology journey in Johannesburg at Sin + Tax bar before bringing his talents to Gorgeous George. The rooftop pool is where Cape Town comes to play. With breathtaking views of the city, here you can be yourself, be inspired and be entertained. With year-round events, this is a meeting place for like minds, new best friends, creative collaborators and locals to love. Rounding out Gorgeous George’s cultural quotient is The White Room, the ideal setting for cultural event programming and art space. The White Room will rub shoulders with neighbouring art galleries, niche museums, and intimate theatres.

JoanGlass – Smart Glasses System Treats Stress, Anxiety, and Depression

Clockwork GameShell – Open Source Portable Retro Game Console

Inspired by his mother that had schizophrenia, Matt Wolf has designed JoanGlass; it's a concept smart glasses system that helps to treat illness such as stress, anxiety, and depression. The science lies in its frame; it has a built-in haptic beating device that'scapable of massaging the area between the eyebrows; where chronic muscular tension occurs. The handles integrate an electromagnetic flux device that will read and send "flux" inside of the Thalamus, restarting communication between synapses. The glass frame implements two instruments that work together, putting a user's brain in a state of meditation. Alpha waves help calm the nervous system, lowering blood pressure and heart rate. As smart glasses, Matt Wolf explains that JoanGlass also comes with a companion app. You can use Apple Watch to read heart rate; it also collects information about your brain and activity and presents the information through the app. The smart medical algorithm sends feedback inside the frame and starts to map your Thalamus. Research has discovered that the portion of our Thalamus is physically larger when we are in major depressive disorder (MDD), located in the centre of our brain, than that of ordinary people.. Thalamus is responsible for many different brain functions, including relaying information to other parts of the brain to the cerebral cortex. JoanGlass uses corrective soft lenses that will improve your vision; they also blend well with the user's face and take a unique shape to enhance your image. Lenses would be available in different types. These smart glasses concept is equipped with a wireless charger that snaps on the frame with the help of magnets. Matt Wolf hopes that he can find investors who are interested in developing this concept to production. He would need inputs and suggestions from many professionals for JoanGlass, such as a psychiatrist, medical experts, people who are practising meditation, and you, future users.

Clockwork GameShell might seem overpriced as a retro game console, but it’s a great gaming device when you are into DIY scene, modding, making your games. It’s an open-source portable retro game console that provides with freedom and indie games; you can enjoy retro games from NES, GBA, GB, Atari, PS1, or any other historic consoles. You can also create your games and mods, GameShell supports unique programming languages such as Python, Lua, JS, Preset C, and LISP. You can choose to modify preexisting titles or create new games as you wish. There are fantastic users on GameShell forums that would teach you a lot of stuff; the advanced Clockwork OS is based on Debian 9ARMhf and Linux 4.1x, and navigating Linux system isn’t that hard. GameShell Retro Game Console features sturdy Clockwork Pi development board with Wi-Fi, CPU, and PMU Chip. It has substantial capacity power that allows you to create your DIY wireless speakers, make smart toys that interact with Lego blocks, or programme a custom to remove for device control. That cool big-screen gaming can be downsized on Linux computer, or you can also connect a GameShell device to any new screen via micro HDMI port to enjoy “large scale” TV gaming. Featuring two-channel stereo speaker, 2.7-inch RG@60fpsScreen, 16GB microSD card, and 1200mAh rechargeable battery, GameShell is a fun retro game console with a learning experience; you can share unique ideas with users around the world in the Clockwork community forum.

Argo Crib Protects Baby from Damaging Electromagnetic Waves

Bird Cruiser Micro Mobility as Part of Shared e-Scooters Program

Noir Vif, together with Ludwig & Dominique, has designed and developed Argo Crib. It’s a unique crib made of beautiful walnut and copper; this combination creates a shield for baby from those damaging electromagnetic waves. This concept crib is named after a mythical vessel that protected Jason and the Argonauts. This crib would gently cradle, shield, and reassure parents that their baby is safe from electromagnetic waves that surround our environment 24 hours/day. Designed under auspices of the Argo Navis ancient constellation, Argo Crib has three main parts, just like the ancient constellation: the Hull (Carina), the Stern (Puppis), and the Sail (Vela). Noir Vif explains that there’s a secret detail, the constellation displayed within straw marquetry on the inner side of the stern; it can also mean that your baby sleeps under the stars. By placing a copper network on the curved walnut surface of the stern, they had to answer to a strong technological and scientific challenge. This process could not have been achieved without the help of “MINES Paristech Materials Research Laboratory”, the “Saint-Gobain Coating Solutions Department” and the support of the “Carnot Network”.

Bird Cruiser is part of global feet of shared vehicles; it’s a modern electric scooter that accommodates up to two adults. This new seated electric vehicle has been designed exclusively for Bird; it offers people a choice to replace car trips with a more environmentally friendly vehicle. It’s also perfect for summer. Travis VanderZanden, CEO of Bird, says that Bird wants to introduce shared e-scooters as part of a global phenomenon when people are getting aware of keeping our environment greener by shifting away from cars. This new vehicle would further accelerate progress to this company's mission to make cities more livable, more eco-friendly environments. Explore your city and neighbourhoods without a car; this inclusive electric-powered vehicle is easy to ride and comfortable even on rough roads. Bird Cruiser is an electric scooter that allows you to sit instead of stand while travelling to your destination. The padded seat would make your journey enjoyable; it has the option of pedal-assist or peg to meet the preferences of riders. Bird Cruiser is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes to provide you with reliable, safe, and responsive slowing and stopping.

THE TRAVEL UPDATE AUGUST 2019 VOL. 3, NO. 7

www.nwr.com.na

We are a proudly Namibian hospitality and service company. We manage resorts and camps within our National Parks across our beautiful country on behalf of the Namibian Government.

NAUKLUFT CAMP Starting from as little as N$550 Key activities: Hiking

BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE NWR State-owned enterprises (SOE) fulfi l signifi cant social and economic roles. This is why members of the public keenly follow their affairs, especially their financial performance. It, therefore, goes without saying that one of the appropriate indicators on whether a commercial SOE is performing or not, is its ability to generate a profi t for its shareholder which in this case is the Namibian Government. However, it must be mentioned that for profitability to occur, re-investing funds in the maintenance of facilities is essential to generate future sustainable profits. This is why, with the limited resources at its disposal, NWR has begun addressing the maintenance challenges that some of its resorts have been experiencing, with Okaukuejo its flagship resort receiving attention, as well as Dolomite, Onkoshi, Sossus Dune Lodge and Sesriem being in line to receive attention as well. In addition to this, NWR is in talks with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to look at synergies that can be employed to address the conditions of the roads within the Etosha National Park as well as the Namib Naukluft Park (Sesriem). The company is positive that these interventions will improve the customer service experience.

has become a once a year offer has provided several domestic travellers with the opportunity to see different corners of this country for next to nothing. For instance, during March, places such as Sossus Dune Lodge cost as little as N$ 575 per person sharing while their luxury river cabins at Popa Falls go for as low as N$ 375 per person sharing and Dolomite resort located inside the Etosha National Park costs N$ 515 per person sharing. Furthermore, the call by the Government for Namibian SOE’s to support Namibian supplies has further shown how NWR had already started playing its part by procuring goods and services, from local suppliers that can provide the standards it requires for its guests. Through this, NWR has positively contributed socially and economically within the areas it operates at. Also, NWR has made donations over the years of linen, towels and cutlery that it no longer uses to schools and communities near their operations. This has been one of the ways the organisation has over the years assisted its shareholder, the Government of the Republic of Namibia. Similarly, NWR has also supported private entities through sponsoring accommodation vouchers aimed at furthering its brand awareness. Quite recently, NWR sponsored the Africa Cup Inline Hockey tournament that was recently held in Swakopmund. Through this tournament, NWR had an opportunity to promote its establishments further to a diverse audience.

HOLDING PAGE

With the current economic adversities that the domestic market is going through, NWR has taken a bold step in encouraging domestic travel through offering a standard Namibian discount of 25% to its nationals and 35% discount to pensioners and companies alike. These discounts have ensured that Namibians are given preferential pricing. Equally, the 75% discount which
