“
For me, there’s nothing more exhilarating than being surrounded by serenity. Whether it be standing on top of a mountain, or wandering along an ancient dry creek bed, my heart and soul always feels at home among these landscapes,” says Putt. “I love to see my artwork bring people together - to get them talking to one another, challenging their visual perceptions and levels of interpretation, on a deeper and more spiritual level.” Tom’s passion has always been landscapes, in particular that of Australia. But equally, he loves sharing his knowledge, and relishes the opportunity to get out into the landscapes, to teach his signature workshops. He’s been teaching landscape photography since 2005. Tom travels to Namibia every year to lead a 12 day photographic workshop though some of the best landscapes Africa has to offer: “I love the Quiver Tree Forest, the abandoned buildings of Kolmanskop, the luxury of Wolwedans, the beauty of Sossuvlei and Deadvlei of course, and Spitzkoppe.” Tom has also been putting his energy and talents into creating new photographs, for upcoming limited and open edition prints, for his newly opened Tom Putt Fine Art Gallery in Victoria, Australia, and his book projects. His most recent landscape photography book came out earlier this year.

Tracking Black Rhino in Namibia Nirvani Pillay headed to the Palmwag Concession in Namibia to track Black Rhino. This is her story – you, too, can experience your own. Words by Nirvani Pillay Photographs supplied by Wilderness Safaris

e live in an age where organisations like Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRT) must take extreme measures to protect endangered wildlife. Viewing these majestic and prehistoric-looking creatures was once a regular leisure activity, but has since become a ‘luck of the draw’ experience due to the threat of poaching to the already fragile population. In partnership with Wilderness Safaris Desert Rhino Camp, SRT plays a critical role in the protection of black rhinos in Namibia, and more especially within the 450 000-hectare Palmwag Concession; no easy task when considering the scale of the sophisticated syndicates that drive rhino poaching. After a scenic 90-minute flight from Windhoek we were collected from the airstrip and immediately my thoughts took on a much slower pace. I breathed in the wonders of Mother Nature, feeling quite content. Looking around I imagined what life on Mars could be, with the red volcanic rock around us dotting the landscape against the brightest blue sky. Giant clumps of pale green Euphorbia damarana, or Damara milk-bush, add some contrast against the bronze earth, colours which are both simultaneously soothing and dramatic. The air smelled so crisp,
and made it nearly impossible to not smile from ear to ear for no particular reason. Perhaps it had something to do with the low human density of this extraordinary country. Our hosts in camp, Gertreida Eises, Bons Roman and the rest of the Desert Rhino Camp team, greeted us with song and dance; a cappella in perfect harmony, which broke through the desert silence and we immediately felt welcomed, as if we were long lost family coming home for a visit. Gertreida and I would later chat in detail about her ethnic group, the Riemvasmakers, and the many challenges they face to preserve their heritage. We spoke at length about certain rituals and cultural norms for weddings and funerals, which intrigued me. Long-term preservation will take effort from the likes of Gertreida and her peers. During sundowners we engaged with the tracking team from SRT. Together with our private guide, Jimmy Limbo, we discussed the next morning’s much-anticipated activity: tracking the elusive black rhinos of Namibia. We received a breakdown of the etiquette required – wear neutral colours, no perfume, silence at all times, walk in a single file, and deactivate the GPS on smartphones so that pictures taken cannot be traced to a

specific location; watch the tracker for hand signals of when to stop, crouch down or go. We were told we could be out for hours and not find a single rhino. SRT has played an influential role in awareness of rhino conservation and the ongoing protection of this subspecies, the population of which is just over 5 000. Most trackers in its employ come from the local communities and have a true passion for the protection of these animals. We chatted a little about the threat of poaching and how their work is shifting the behaviour of communities. Desert Rhino Camp makes every attempt to bring rhino conservation into focus. Touch points include posters around the main area to highlight key information about black rhinos and Wilderness Safaris’ partnership history with SRT. Guests even have a choice of ‘rhino gin’ among other local southern African brands. Dusk set in and I watched as the sky became a fluid palette of oranges, pinks and lavender. I almost never catch the sunset or sunrise while living in a city like Johannesburg, so being fully engaged in the way the earth changes is very therapeutic. A sliver of moon peeked through and soon we were ushered into the vehicle for a short drive, at the end of which we found a tasteful bush dinner set up, complete with lanterns, bonfire and stars. We retired after feasting on a delicious meal. Our early morning wakeup was followed with much-needed coffee and a nibble before we headed off on our rhino-tracking adventure. Jimmy kept in radio contact with the tracking team which was out at least an hour ahead of us. We drove for quite some time to another zone where trackers had spotted a cow and her calf. There was a nervous hush in the vehicle as we hypothesized on the adventure that lay ahead. We spotted the tracker vehicle in the far distance and edged closer to it. Jimmy parked and reminded us of the etiquette, especially to maintain silence. We walked in single

file through the rocks and up a tiny hill from where we watched the rhinos browsing in the distance. In silent contemplation of the privilege of this experience, and the evils of poaching, we noticed the rhinos sensing our presence. After some tense moments the mother and her calf edged towards us. The trackers recommended we back away so as not to stress the animals, and they soon sauntered off about half a kilometre to the east. Feeling satisfied by this we headed back to the vehicle. About 45 minutes later we received another radio call. Another rhino had been found. This time a male. More anticipation, wondering if we would make it in time. We parked a distance away, then trekked up and down a few hills, again in single file. There he was. Beautiful. Safe. We watched as he kept turning to look at us, trot a few steps away, nibble on some shrubs, then repeat the process. Eventually he quickened pace in the opposite direction and we retreated to the vehicle. We felt so privileged. We drove towards a little den where brunch was served in the shade of a camelthorn tree. The trackers showed us a presentation of how they keep a record of each rhino they sight. The animals each have names, and there are some favourites too. The tracking team exudes passion for their role in rhino conservation, and a visit to Desert Rhino Camp is nothing short of life-changing.

Asset Allocation In Constantly Evolving Markets By Vanessa Mabophe, Quantitative Analyst at Prescient Investment Management
W
ith constantly changing markets and macroeconomic fundamentals, asset allocation has become a more engaging process, a prerequisite for survival and a way of staying ahead of the curve. At Prescient Investment Management we are cognisant of continuously evolving markets and take on a quantitatively and macroeconomically inclined asset allocation methodology. Our investable asset universe spans a wide range that includes local cash, equities, bonds, real assets (for example, listed property and inflation-linked bonds) and SA alternatives. In addition, there are off-shore variants including developed market cash, emerging market and developed market bonds and equities, amongst others. The foundation of asset allocation lies in understanding the comovements of these various asset classes with one another and the extent to which each class is affected by changes in macroeconomic fundamentals - keeping in mind various constraints like Regulation 28 and other fund-specific limitations. Ultimately, the core objective is to structure an optimal allocation that is well-diversified, offering stable returns over the long-term. Though we base optimal allocation on the standard deviation of the asset’s historical returns (using an efficient frontier), we believe that past performance is in no way an accurate indicator of future performance. As a result, our calculation of expected longterm returns for each asset class does not rely on recent historic performance. Rather, we employ a risk premia based approach in which we add a premium for each risk factor that is embedded in the asset class. For instance, cash would have the lowest expected return and emerging market small caps would have the highest expected returns as the latter are exposed to more risk factors compared to cash. This approach ensures that we price each risk factor within an asset class, ensuring that our long-term return expectations are properly informed. Our asset allocation process starts with a strategic asset allocation (SAA), which is essentially a long-term view that focuses
on tracking the benchmark. Generally, this would be the strategy employed for passive funds. However, none of our funds are passive in nature, relying instead on tactical asset allocation (TAA) which introduces tilts to the SAA to capitalise on prevalent short- to medium-term market mispricing. It is for this reason that valuations form part of the well-defined set of indicators that govern our TAA process - along with analysis of the prevailing economic environment, available liquidity and market sentiment. In addition, the TAA adjustments are grouped into three buckets: Alpha, Beta and Vega. Generally, an Alpha tilt would allow an investor to gain a market neutral exposure, whereas a Beta tilt is one that would enable the exploitation of weights among various asset classes (for example, overweight bonds and underweight equities), whilst a Vega tilt mainly speaks to volatility trades where one would either buy or sell options based on the level of volatility. Once the tilt to be explored has been identified, the decision as to whether it materialises rests on the strength and the level of conviction. For more conservative funds, which have a relatively tight tracking error, the level of conviction has to be high for the tilt to be exercised. From a real yield perspective, SA and global emerging market yields remain attractive relative to their more developed counterparts including the European Union and the US. So, we are overweight SA and global emerging market bonds, but underweight US and EU bonds. On the other hand, for real assets like SA listed property and inflation-linked bonds, we are moderately overweight as their respective yields remain in the top quartile, and the slope of the US yield curve is still in positive territory. Overall, given the current macroeconomic fundamentals, we expect riskier asset allocations to outperform more conservative ones. As a result, at Prescient Investment Management we are overweight equities.

visceral creator and visual storyteller, inspired by distinctive compositional intuition and an inherent understanding to create within the natural landscape, Marcii Magson invites viewers “to have conversations with all the various possible resolutions of abstraction that presents itself in the form of my paintings”. Open to the idea of starting conversations with strangers, she’s eager to talk visitors through her latest exhibition, Tekstúra, explaining the mark making, brush strokes and line drawing that makes up this body of work. While this process allows for an interactive approach to understanding the creative thought behind her artworks, Marcii simultaneously aims to inspire others to look more carefully at the world around them and so discover a similar obscurity in unusual places. Tekstúra comprises monochromatic artworks created through the practise of mixed media, collage, painting and audiovisual short films. The artist describes her current solo exhibition as “the fruit of extensive experimentation with texture and surface to overturn painting’s traditional conventions, seeking to liberate art from representation and narrative.” Toying with the use of raw cotton and canvas by soaking it in various liquids, paints and glues, a series of mixed-media paintings – layered, scratched, folded or marked – led to the conception of the Pallid Series. With a focus on the word’s meaning as colourless, it highlights the idea of putting the artistic focus on the canvas through a journey of texture rather than colour, and transforms the canvas into the subject of the piece.

ARTIST PROFILE
“The aim was to produce a pale that is not an arctic landscape, not a material with meaning or beauty, not a visual sensation or a symbol, nor anything else, but a pale textured surface that is simply a pale textured surface and nothing else.” The exhibition also includes a series of monochromatic geometric paintings featuring broad brush strokes of pale colours and bold black markings that focus on the materiality and tangibility of surface texture. Manipulating the canvas and activating it through energetic strokes, splashes, and drips of paint, the technique saturates the surface in black, tones of skincolours and shades of white. The resulting works, best described as objects, are dramatic composites that serve as testament to an intuitive and spirited practice. Blessed with a natural sense of creativity, Marcii started her artistic training towards the end of high school, in the form of night classes in black and white photography. After developing an eye for composition and light, over the following years she sharpened her skills through the moving image, where aspects of concept and narrative were accentuated, before taking on the world of layout, design and branding, combining it all in the form of advertising. Her career took her from advertising to the fashion industry and back again to advertising (launching an agency with a colleague), but after experiencing a feeling of being stuck, she broke free from the commercialised art world and braved a stint in a few non-profitable projects, “to get my soul back and find my balance”. In 2011, Marcii founded conceptual design studio, Clrs & Co. where she was Creative Director for four years, working mainly in interior architecture and retail, before moving to Namibia in 2016. A move she holds as one of the highlights of her career, she states, “Moving to Namibia was a major change in my state of mind and well-being. It also had a huge impact on my life and work as artist. I had time to paint, experiment and work in a studio full time. I am still doing design consulting but can decide to take on a project, as art has become pivotal to my every day existence. I produce extensive work and take part in as many exhibitions as possible. I also feel I have established a signature in my practise.” Tekstúra is Marcii’s first solo exhibition in Windhoek. Catch it from 14-29 June at The Project Room in Windhoek, or visit www. marciimagsonatelier7881.com to see more of the artist’s work.

Stock up for a long winter The seven good years are over – it’s time for the seven lean years
W
inter isn’t coming, it’s here. Across the world economists are warning consumers that they should tighten their belts and in southern Africa, especially Namibia, it’s no different. Do you know whether you’re ready for it? Most Namibians tend to disappear indoors for a long winter, and with this news, the middle of the year and the general quietness around town, you have the perfect opportunity for a mid-year review.
a great feeling when everything falls into place and it also means that you’re covered for any eventuality.
Even though the actual temperatures have dropped across Namibia, it’s time to see whether you’ve stayed frosty with your spending and can warm up to some more savings. That financial plan you created at the beginning of the year should start to show good returns while taking stock of your current financial wellbeing can indicate any changes you need to bring. Are you and your family keeping to your budget, have your spending habits changed in the last few months, are inflationary increases affecting your overall monthly budget or If you have some discretionary funds to work with, can you increase your fund contributions or use this as another opportunity to diversify your portfolio?
Even though one’s first instinct is to splurge any new income on yourself, take a step back from searching for that new SUV bulbar and the perfect weekend getaway for you and your partner, and heed this bit of advice – a financial drought that could hit you at some time in your life.
On the other hand, if your financial position changed (for better or worse), use the knowledge you gain from your review to either tighten your belt, or if you were lucky enough to have received a raise this year, do the right thing right.
Yes, psychologically you will feel entitled to enjoy the fruits of your labour, but in reality, the moment you get your raise… what you should do is to look at the difference between your old salary and your new salary, and pretty much pretend that it doesn’t exist.
If you’ve never done a financial review, there’s no time like the present. Use your winter mid-year review for a complete review with one of our Simonis Storm Advisors. You never know what you’ll find. It could be that you’re paying into an unknown policy – or that a long-forgotten policy is ready to mature.
Why pretend? Well, the number one mistake people make when they receive a raise is to increase their monthly spending to accommodate the extra money, while in reality, they used to cope very well without it and should therefore put it away into an account such as a Simonis Storm Unit Trust account to keep it away from their wallets.
Regardless of the type of review, if you find nothing much has changed and that you’re well on your way to reaching the financial goals you set yourself at the beginning of 2019, we applaud you. It’s
You’ll be surprised to see how quickly a unit trust account can grow and you’ll have a new ‘emergency or whatever comes first fund’. Also, without realizing it, in a matter of weeks you would have forgotten

about what you could’ve bought with the extra money. At the same time next year, you can always decide whether you want to do the same with your new raise and increase the contributions to your Unit Trust account, you could take a chunk of it and invest it into a longerterm account, or now that you already would have a savings fund – you could finally splurge! Nine out of ten times individuals find that because they have a savings fund and can therefore dip into it from time to time that they don’t need the psychological quick high of a splurge.

Overall your mid-year review should help you in your larger financial quest: to identify and remove any excess funds out of your day-today expense spending and to help you save or invest it. Not only will you be happier knowing you’ve curated a healthy portfolio, but thanks to taking little steps such as this, you’ll build a habit of saving. And don’t worry too much if it seems impossible at first. Keep trying and soon you’ll have a hefty financial buffer to weather any storm. And if you’re unsure of how you can make the most of your financial position, contact one of our esteemed wealth managers and they’ll show you how easy it is to get into a cozy financial position.

There’s a Waterfall on my stoep The Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, may be an iconic, indelible miracle of Mother Nature, but it is the Falls’ whimsy that mesmerises most visitors and makes each viewing unique. It is unsurprising that David Livingstone famously said, ‘scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.’ Words and photographs by Kathy Malherbe Some photographs supplied

efore sunrise, the Falls takes on a mystical look but as the pink light dances off the cascading curtain of water, it starts to sparkle in the morning light. The waterfall’s misty spray, which gave rise to the name ‘the smoke that thunders,’ can be seen up to 40km away and close up it falls exactly like rain. The omnipresent rainbow over the falls spawns a mirror image softer and smudged so that the two kaleidoscopes arc over the cliffs. It is hard to describe what happens when the 2,574 km of the Zambezi river confluences to form the largest body of falling water on the planet. As the evening approaches and the sun drops off the horizon, the last of the burnt-orange frames one of the Seven Wonders of the World – Mother Nature’s masterpiece is breath-taking. During the night the moonlight bounces off the spray giving rise to a ‘moonbow’, one of the most distinctive and striking secrets of Africa. The Falls also change according to the season – during the rainy season, the water flows fast and seems to be racing to the edge of a 100 metre drop. Every minute, over 5 million cubic metres of water pours over the Falls and the rising mist is so thick, the Falls are effectively in a white out.
One visit is never enough. Which is why staying at the Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara in Zambia, a ten minute walk to the Falls, makes a perfect and ultra-luxurious base for multiple visits. The route is like a mini walking safari as you pass giraffes, zebras, impala and troops of monkeys on your meander to the entrance. For those who can’t make the walk, there is a buggy always available to trundle you through the beautiful grounds. Guests at the Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara have unlimited, private access to the Falls. It’s not just the proximity to the Falls that sets the Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara apart. It is the graciousness of the building, and warm, convivial staff. While sipping an ice cold drink, you are treated to a hand massage by the local masseuse under the large wooden ceiling fans, durning the introduction to the hotel. The rolling green lawns lead down to the Zambezi River and the ‘smoke that thunders’ is visible from anywhere in the grounds. Zebras wander around the ground unperturbed, cropping the lawn and one prances playfully in and out of the sprinkler. They are deceptively like cuddly ponies in striped pyjamas but signs around the hotel warn guests they have a kick and bite like a mule.

On the way to your room you may need to step gingerly around an elegant giraffe standing across the pathway or expertly eating from the thorny acacia trees, and vervet monkeys doing gymnastics between the trees. The Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara is a destination in itself but it’s hard to resist the plethora of activities offered in the area. Which is why boarding the ‘Royal Livingstone Express’ steam locomotive to view the sunset from the bridge over the Falls is a must. Built by Cecil John Rhodes, an ambitious project to take the railway from Cape to Cairo, the bridge connects Zimbabwe and Zambia. After stopping at the bridge to watch the sunset over the Falls from yet another perspective, the train puffs back to the town of Livingstone, while guests enjoy a five course meal. The
journey is one of platinum service, pampering, excellent food and wine as you surrender to the pace of a bygone era. After the mellowness of the train journey, the adrenalineseekers can enjoy a microlight flight over the Falls. At first sight, the aircraft looks unnervingly like a lawnmower engine with fixed wings. In technical terms it is called flying in an ultralight 1 or 2 seat fixed wing aircraft. Whatever the name, the experience is just as incredible. Your birds’ eye view of the Falls includes the meandering gorge where the Falls have slowly whittled the sandstone away to expose the hard basalt, then descend so that you can see the bloats of hippo in the water and perhaps a herd of elephant swimming across the river to a small island with its extra sweet vegetation.

JUNE 2019 | FLAMINGO
A gentle landing on the grass runway signals the end of a once in a lifetime experience indelibly printed in your mind, while a GoPro fixed to the wing ensures that you have the proof in images. In the unlikely event that you need something to help you relax, a massage in the Gazebo on the edge of the Zambezi River does just that. Apart from the pampering of the masseuse, there is a magical touch to the experience. Mirrors are strategically placed at an angle on the floor so that as you lie face down you have a view of the Falls, while you submit to the expert hands on your muscles. It is a unique and sublime experience. So is the sunset cruise. With the Zambezi River on your doorstep, exploring the river is a must. Within minutes of leaving the river bank, drinks are served and the spotter alerts us to crocodiles, hippos and elephants at the edge of the water. As the boat gently approaches a river bank, a tiny crocodile – about 20cm in length, suns itself on a branch. Apparently around three weeks old, the mother abandons them to fend for themselves. Only 4% of the hatchlings survive so it’s hardly surprising the ones that do, grow up aggressive and a bit unpredictable. After a stop for snacks on a tiny island, the boat picks up speed so that you are treated to the magnificent and quite different perspective of watching the sun set from behind the Falls. Apart from the experiences outside of the Royal Livingstone Hotel by Anantara while you are there, the staff ensures that you want for nothing. The excellent service is ubiquitous and combined with five star cuisine, while the capricious moods of the Falls are always visible from your stoep.

P
rofessional and amateur photographers worldwide were invited to enter the fifth International Landscape Photographer of the Year competition for a chance to share in the prize pool, including US$10,000 cash. The International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards 2018 presents 101 exceptional landscape photographs, selected by an experienced judging panel. Entrants and winners alike represent all corners of the globe in a wildly disparate display of remarkable and emotionally charged landscape photographs. While entrants’ main aim is to be one of the top 101 images of the year, the judges are also asked to do what is really an impossible task: to pick the best of the best. But is it the best photograph or the best photographer? For this reason, the Awards have two main prizes. The Photograph of the Year is for the best single landscape photograph, while to be named International Landscape Photographer of the Year requires a set of four images, showing in addition to a spark of landscape brilliance, a degree of consistency and experience. From nearly 3000 entries from 863 photographers, the winner of the fifth International Landscape Photographer of the Year is Adam Gibbs from Canada (based on a folio submission of at least 4 images). What makes a great landscape photographer? Persistence? Experience? Luck? Passion? Looking at Adam Gibbs’ winning portfolio, the judges see “a diversity of views, an understanding of light and the expert use of framing and composition. From sandy aerials to icy mountain locations, Adam’s portfolio demonstrates a range of topics, an essential component when it comes to convincing judges that you are the International Landscape Photographer of the Year.” Adam Gibbs lives part-time between New Westminster, British Columbia and Parksville, Vancouver Island, Canada. “I’ve been a professional photographer since 1992 and up until 2014, my primary source of income was photographing gardens for gardening publications, but since then I have been a full-time nature photographer.” Adam says he was originally inspired by a nature photography book written by John Shaw in the 1980s. “Since I'm still a bit old school from the film days, I tend to try and capture the majority of my images in a single frame. I don't have strong views on image manipulation, other than I find more joy in capturing great light and composition on site, rather than creating something that didn't exist when I took the photo. My love of nature and the outdoors is much stronger than my desire to make images, so for me, pictures taken at the moment have far more integrity and personal meaning than those made later in a computer.” “I generally try to keep the image accurate to form and not use too much post-processing, although when the light is not great, I'll use a few more tricks to bring the best out of an image. I use Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC 2019 for all of my work.”

Adam is currently using a Nikon D850 along with 14-24mm, 16 - 35mm, 24-120mm and 70-200mm lenses.“ And I l love the Breakthrough Photography filters, especially the Dark X4 CPL filters that combine a 3 or 6 stop ND filter with a polariser into one filter.” “Most definitely, light is the key to great photography. If I don't have great light, then I search out subjects that go with the light at hand.” When the judges asked Adam if he had any secret locations worth investigating as a landscape photographer, he was quick to nominate one of his homes, Vancouver Island. “It is an exceptional place. The landscape is rugged, but not in your face and extremely challenging, especially the forests. I love it. However, other than the popular Canadian Rockies, the rest of British Columbia and Canada itself are highly underrated, in my opinion, as prime photo destinations for those seeking raw wilderness experiences.” “And entering contests such as the International Landscape Photographer of the Year is an excellent way to gain recognition from your peers and the general public. It's also a great way to get your work out there in front of the world to see – and the chance of winning a major prize is always appealing! “I have entered many contests in the past. I tend to enter in waves. Some years I'll enter a few and other years none. Of course, not placing in a contest is disappointing, especially if you believe that your image is the best that you have ever taken. However, I don't take it personally because I know that

judging in itself is a long and sometimes arduous process. The results are almost always contentious and, of course, subjective, but in the end, I am usually happy for the winners as they have gained the things that I enjoy about winning contests, recognition from their peers.” “After all, landscape photography is not generally considered a competitive pursuit, but an opportunity to enjoy nature and make a few images along the way.”

The winner of the Fifth International Landscape Photograph of the Year (awarded for a single image) is Paul Marcellini from the USA “I seem to love every place I spend some time in, but it is the swamps of Florida that will always be my favourite habitat to explore. I enjoy the challenge of trying to organize the chaos. It is also a pretty strong bet that I will be the only one out there and the solitude is great!”Paul says he respects the aims of the International Landscape Photographer of the Year award and has always thought the winning images were of very high quality. “I have entered most major competitions over the years and have been lucky to place in many, but early when I started out, I used to take it a little personally if I didn’t rate. Now I consider it a bonus and it doesn't affect me if my image doesn’t stand out to a judge. Art is all personal and when a competition is judged by only a few sets of eyes, it is inevitable that sometimes you won't get picked.” Well, on this occasion, Paul’s image was picked – and we’re sure you can see why!

Goldstein, Fine Art Photographer and Author, USA. Chairman of Judges, Peter Eastway says; “Landscape photographers are a passionate lot! Some are passionate about discovering remote locations under exceptional light, while others are passionate about using their imagination to create landscapes of the mind. However, both schools of thought put their differences aside to engage in our annual International Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards. Sharing Namibia’s stories: Powered by Gondwana
The song of the
I can tell you about the song of the Zambezi, but experiencing its rhythm is where the magic lies. This, however, requires switching off engines, weighing anchors and allowing the river to take you along its course. Welcome to life in the “no wake zone”, as the sign reads when one approaches the riverbank by boat.

The song of the Zambezi is the call of the majestic fish eagle heard on a boat cruise. It is the tranquil lapping of water against the riverbanks as you unwind around the campfire at night. It is the cricket chirps after sunset accompanied by the hoot of an owl to bid you goodnight. It is the flitting sound of a swarm of Southern carmine bee-eaters passing overhead. It is the sound of a hippo’s upset stomach … at least that is what we teasingly dubbed the squeaky noise the pearly white Zambezi sand makes as every step we took brought about more laughter. Together with three friends, I departed on a five-day trip to Namibia’s greenest corner in the northeast with its abundant wildlife and colourful birdlife. Destination: Zambezi Mubala Camp – a peaceful, down-to-earth river experience that can easily be spiced up with some adventure if desired.

Zambezi Mubala Camp Zambezi Mubala Camp is situated only 40 kilometres from Katima Mulilo’s airport and was our safe haven for the extended weekend. The permanent tents, each with a small terrace surrounded by a huge, lush green lawn, have adjacent brick bathrooms. We became regulars at the restaurant at lunchtime, and spent most evenings in the serenity of our own tented home around a braai (or a barbecue for my foreign friends). The kitchen is fully
equipped, so we did not need to pack any extras, which is a plus considering that we flew in directly from Windhoek. We took the “no wake zone” very seriously and spent our days under the thick tree canopy with a good book, taking a dip in the pool every now and again to cool off. But first, we were up for an adventure – something that none of us had ever done before.

An all girls’ fishing expedition
DISCLAIMER:
If somebody had said to me, “Here is your pole and your rope” I would definitely not have imagined that we were going tiger fishing! It took only one fishing trip with Mubala’s capable guide, Alex, to get the terminology down pat. And to reel in that first catch! The Zambezi Region is any fisherman’s dream, with the feisty tiger fish being the most prized trophy. When I asked a local if he had ever eaten tiger fish, his friend replied, “You don’t eat tiger fish. The tiger fish eats you.” And it’s true. The most action in this sport only starts when reeling in the big guy. A tiger fish won’t go down without a fight.
Going fishing with an all-girls group will result in many facepalm moments and might lead to some form of head injury. Aside from referring to the rod and the line as a pole and rope, new terms were invented, such as “reverse twerking”, describing the strike action that is needed as soon as the fish starts tugging on the line. On the first tug, the excitement was so great that my friend almost lost her fishing pole, I mean rod. But after a while, we got the knack of it and were ready for any surprises. Alex caught a tiny bream, which he carefully released back into the water. Fishing is always done on a catch-and-release basis, so no fish were harmed for the purposes of writing this story. In the end, we were relieved that no one landed a tiger, because who knows how that story would have ended?
On that note, it comes as no surprise that the Nwanyi Angling Club is situated nearby. The club hosts the annual international Zambezi Classic angling competition that attracts avid fishermen from all around the world. Who will be the next lucky prize boat winner?

The isolated white beaches of the north Finally, after all the action, we disembarked to sink our toes into the velvety soft sand on the riverbank. Remember the squeaky sand I mentioned earlier? It’s the perfect spot for a beach braai. Although this is not an official activity, it is one of the perks low-season travellers could enjoy. It is astounding how the Mubala team skilfully turns this isolated location into a dining room. While the chef whipped up dinner on site, we made the most of the picture-perfect sunset reflected in the river. And this is when we first completely grasped the meaning of Mubala (pronounced Muvala), which is “colourful” in Silozi.
Birding hotspot With two birders in the group and the Zambezi being a birding hotspot, we could not pass up the opportunity to go on a photographic birding excursion, or a G&Texcursion for some of us. Nevertheless, even those less interested in birding learned something new about the feathered inhabitants of the region.
The rice plantations of the north The Zambezi is so much more than birding and fishing. It is also a major rice production site that falls under the Green Scheme initiative that aims to ensure food security in the country. Next you are in a local shop, keep an eye out for Kalimbeza in the rice section. I know I will.
Life in the “no wake zone” Aside from birding excursions and leisurely walks and boat cruises, we relearned the art of switching off our engines, tuning in to the rhythm of the river and living life in the “no wake zone”. This is highly recommended to all the tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilised people out there, or if you are simply up for exploring the north-eastern reaches of beautiful Namibia. by Annelien Robberts

THE MIDGARD
EXPRESS Words by Martha Mukaiwa Photographs by O&L Leisure

he trains at Midgard Country Estate aren’t the kind that chug across the country. Once, perhaps, they trundled over the land, passing desert and ocean. Elderly cogs in Namibia’s rail history which spans more than 100 years beginning with a 383km line from Swakopmund to Windhoek before crisscrossing across the country. Today, with a century old story behind them, Midgard’s trains stand still. Only mimicking motion as they are bathed in the bright neon light flashing across a large, picnic table dotted green where a sizable pit fire sends sparks flying splendid into the night in spits of orange and booms of sound. “It’s the ancestors!” shouts one enchanted guest, suggesting perhaps that the estate’s dearly departed are pleased with the Midgard train complex’s striking refurbishment. A lavish overhaul that has transformed what many may remember as a trio of weatherworn trains fringing a sandy courtyard into the lush green grass, festive lighting and sleek new train carriage accommodation ostensibly worth a whisper from the big beyond. Perhaps even from Ohlthaver and List Group Executive Chairman Sven Thieme’s grandfather. The man Thieme describes - upon officially opening the train complex last month - as a figure somewhat feared at auctions for his unparalleled ability to scoop up absolutely everything.
62

Midgard’s trains are part of his grandfather’s epic haul. Bought at a TransNamib auction and still bearing the railway company’s name alongside their own, Midgard delights guests looking for a unique, somewhat offbeat travel experience aboard trains called Vintage, Graphic and Crisp just a short walk from the estate’s famed main lodge, sparkling pools, retro kegelbahn, gorgeous outdoor terraces, immaculate gardens and the newly opened Acacia spa. For romantics, like myself, Vintage is just the ticket. A 7-carriage blast from the past suggesting the glamour and romance of historic train rides. Adorned with transportive black and white photographs recalling the varying emotions inherent in train travel - the rowdy departing sailors, the bittersweet goodbyes, the mother and child patiently waiting at the station - Vintage’s windows peer into a brand new world from amidst the distinct finishes of an old one. Set in the nostalgic carriage’s sights - which include a flutter of flags below a slash of blue sky and rambling mountain - are geometric Graphic and minimalist Crisp. The former a bold and colourful plunge into pop art and train graffiti influences that make for hip and vibrant dwelling most suitable for the young at heart, the Instagramming and equally eclectic while the latter preludes its style in its name.

Clean cut, minimalist and modern, Crisp is the carriage for the understated. An unfussy home away from home that is functional, neat, stylish and widely appealing. While each train carriage is imbued with its own mood and motifs in addition to Station Master and Loco Driver’s bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and lounge available for those seeking more private lodging, the train complex is envisioned as self-catering. And as any Namibian knows, a warm night, a pile of wood and a weekend away means fire. Dancing flames to set the scene and a grill on which to slap some of the world’s best meat which is precisely what a 100+ wedding party is doing the night before the Midgard hosted nuptials. Though the trains were yet to be refurbished, the jovial spirit of the space was the same. A hive of eating, drinking, dancing guests from as close as Cape Town and as far as the UK making the most of being together in accommodation as novel as a stationary train. A few months later, what was already there – an essence of togetherness, the impossibly starry skies, the camaraderie of train journeys (yes, even stationary ones) – is only amplified by the refurbishment. Characteristically lively below the stars, at their best and amidst a full house, train carriage guests reveal themselves to be the kind of people who don’t mind a little socializing and have perused the unwritten handbook on stationary train culture.

JOURNEY THROUGH NAMIBIA'S MOST LOVED HOTELS AND LODGES
Particularly the chapter on maintaining the neat shared ablution blocks which are traditionally left as clean and as ready for the next person as one would desire for themselves. This, in addition to sections dedicated to gleaming communal kitchens, respecting each other’s braai packs and sleeping in close quarters, is essential. While some carriages can sleep four people with the length of one’s limbs a direct indicator of comfort, the trick in naturally spacedeficient stationary train carriages is ultimately the certainty that guests will venture outside. To perch in the bean bags around the fire, to whip up something quick and delicious in one of the site’s two kitchens, to linger over their specially catered grub in the dining car or to make one’s way to the main estate where the amenities are yours for the enjoying. It’s a swell little trick. Stationary trains don’t take you anywhere, you see. Except that they do. They make you dive deep into conversation by the bonfire. They spirit you away on the wings of secrets whispered late into the night from friendship-solidifying bunks or they send you out into the grounds where the country charm of Midgard awaits… And your journey truly begins.
In the African bush, not far from Namibia’s capital, lies a tranquil farmstead oasis. A perfect retreat from city life. Discover the wonders of Midgard Country Estate, an iconic Namibian destination.

AUKEY USB Wall Charger with Rotate Plug Feature
Qwerkywriter : Retro Mechanical Bluetooth Keyboard
AUKEY USB Wall Charger has a special feature, it rotates in a 180-degree arc for positioning below. This AUKEY PA-X07 plug has a three-prong AC outlet, it allows you to power up to four devices with 1 AC outlet, 1 Quick Charge 3.0 USB, and 2 AiPower USB ports. The Quick Charge 3.0 allows you to refuel your mobile device up to four times faster than a conventional charging device. AiPower technology supports healthier battery function yet faster USB charging speeds; it can smartly adjust power output to match the unique charging needs of your USB-powered device. You can charge your iPad at full speed or share the 2.4A total output between two devices. This flexibility of this wall charger allows for convenient use in a position that doesn’t block adjacent outlets. The advanced safeguards also protect your devices against overheating or overcharging.
QwerkyWriter, this cool Bluetooth keyboard will give you a kickback to the nostalgic era with its retro-mechanical design. Once you place it on your desk, everyone would take a glance at this device; it looks like a vintage typewriter, but actually, it’s a modern, Bluetooth connected keyboard. Touchscreen technology is getting better and better; we train our mind and fingers to get used to capacitive touch. But when you have to type hundreds of characters, you might retreat and wait when you are at the computer. The combination of vintage and modern design is really captivating, it features rounded keycaps with shiny chrome rims housed in an aluminium case. The fake plastic knob mimics the classic typewriters that we usually use to feed the paper. Do you notice the return bar handle? It functions as an ENTER key by default, but you can also programme it to remember up to 5 characters. The compact design is small enough to be carried in your bag or laptop case, but it’s not too small to cause hand cramps just like when you use those small Bluetooth keyboards. Pair this keyboard with your Bluetooth-enabled devices; you can feelthe traditional way to type. Since these keycaps are built on mechanical switches, you will feel tactical feedbacks and you can hear those satisfying clicky sounds. Qwerkywriter is compatible with Android devices, Windows tablets, iPads, and almost all standard Bluetooth enabled devices. The built-in stand comes in handy to support mobile devices up to 10-inch wide and ½-inch thick. This keyboard is equipped with a rechargeable 1000mAh 3.7Wh lithiumion battery where one charge (approx. 3 hours) can last for a month.

Pac – Future Last Mile Delivery Transportation by Flnn.Design Flnn.Design presents you with their future vision of last mile delivery transportation system, Pac. It’s a system that adapts to user’s needs and wishes; it can also be scaled during peak times to keep a perfectly timed delivery. In the future Pac implements a hub and spoke system into neighbourhoods, it uses autonomous micro hubs as storage space with small droids that deliver the orders to the consumers. This system allows deeper integration of delivery service through a holistic e-shopping experience. According to Flnn.Design, Microhub would become the core of the system. It is an electrically driven, autonomous distribution centre that functions as a decentralized items warehouse. To avoid traffic disruptions, Microhub only moves at night, when traffic is less, so that is can be reloaded as quickly as possible with pre-assembled shelves. The real delivery couriers in this system are autonomous droids where they can keep 10 to 25 items and distribute them on optimized routes. Due to their size, they can easily move not just on roads but also on sidewalks or bicycle paths, thus allowing for more accurate timing and less dependence on traffic. The satellite a.k.a the robotic courier is able to communicate with you via text messages. It allows a simple and intuitive way to communicate because the user would be already familiar with the tool. Once this droid arrives at your doorstep, it recognizes you, and after verifying yourself with your smart device, it will supply your order. Since delivery has become an essential part of the shopping experience, Pac system also offers premium service where the satellite picks up a driver to deliver an order in person. This driver can receive additional information from the customer and acts as a brand ambassador; this can also benefit people who are physically limited, when they can get direct personal delivery. THE TRAVEL UPDATE JUNE 2019 VOL. 3, NO. 5
www.nwr.com.na
We are a proudly Namibian hospitality and service company. We manage resorts and camps within our National Parks across our beautiful country on behalf of the Namibian Government.
WATERBERG RESORT Starting from as little as N$400 Key activities: Game drives
TOURISM IS LIKE INVESTING, IT TAKES TIME When one thinks about how far we have advanced as a country, it’s so easy to overlook the amount of effort and time that has gone into realising the progress we are enjoying today. As a nation, we all desire to be developed in order to provide a better life for our fellow citizens.
establishments have greatly contributed towards the selection of lodges visitors can stay at. For example, it was not so long ago that NWR was only operating Okaukuejo resort, Halali resort and Namutoni resort within the Etosha National Park. Over the years we added Onkoshi resort, Dolomite resort as well as Olifantsrus campsite. This has greatly assisted in ensuring that we are able to meet the high demand within the park.
From the onset, like investing, tourism requires patience and continued investment in order to realise the results of one’s efforts. It’s so easy to forget that in 1992 our tourist arrivals were 220 000 however in 2017 our arrivals stood at 1,499,442. Furthermore, in 2015 the industry was said to be supporting 44,700 jobs and significantly contributing towards Namibia’s gross domestic product.
One thing that I always tell people is that, tourism is like investing money, it takes time to realise the return. You need to be patient and continue contributing or in the tourism world, going to different expos and fairs in order to present your product offering with the aim of enticing more people to come and visit you. It is for this reason I have come to appreciate that it takes around three years before you start seeing a return on your investment within the sector. At times it might happen faster, but you need to be patient.
While, it must be clearly stated that, Namibia did not just arrive at this point were different tourists are excited about our country. It was a team effort starting from independence which ushered a new dawn that allowed safe travel throughout Namibia. Equally, the emergence of the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) played a significant role in taking brand Namibia onto the international stage. This ensured that it became a must-see destination.
This is why after many years of putting the word out there, Namibia is now enjoying a growth of tourist arrivals. Most of our efforts along with the various campaigns NTB has been involved in are starting to yield the desired results. If we are to continue on this growth path, we as a nation need to consciously keep the momentum and remember that tourism is like investing, it takes time to get your return.
Also, Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) and many other tourism
NWR GOES DIGITAL Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) has for the past few years The business world has significantly changed since the internet went mainstream during the early 1990s. I can recall how challenging it was to access information about businesses before this period. At the same time, the past two decades have brought about significant changes within the digital landscape that have led to companies having to either adapt or fall behind. Since joining Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), quite a number of things have changed in how we go about doing our business and how we stay in touch with our clients. It was five years ago that we re-positioned ourselves and moved away from our previous methods of communicating and presenting our activities and establishments. To start with, we re-developed our website with the sole purpose of making it user-friendly in addition to ensuring secure access on any device. With the increase in enquiries from the improvement of our website, we further incorporated an online booking and payment portal to ensure that our clients would not have to leave the site to finalise their booking. This led to our clients having a seamless user experience on the platform. On average, we receive over 20 000 monthly visitors on our website with the top five countries being Namibia, Germany, South Africa, Netherlands, and France. With the emergence of the smartphone, there has been a significant shift from how clients interact with brands. A survey that appeared on IT News Africa stated that Namibia’s active mobile broadband subscribers increased from 1.5 million to 1.6
million people from June 2016 to June 2017. Equally, Namibia was ranked 7th on the African continent as having the fastest mobile internet. It also stated that over 470 000 individuals access the internet via their mobile phones. As a company, such data re-enforced why the introduction of our IOS and Android smartphone application four years ago was a step in the right direction. Over the years we have continuously updated it to ensure it remains relevant. We went a step further by always sending notifications of pertinent content to our users who spend an average of 3 minutes on the application. During the same period, we saw the need to update our clients with what was going on at NWR and the specials we had. Initially, we heavily utilised print newsletters as a channel of communicating our news. With little or no clear way of evaluating the reach or impact of these newsletters, we started using Mailchimp which now provides us with the data we require to know whether what we are communicating is relevant and useful to our clients. Likewise, our clients can interact with us regarding queries or product related information. Internally, our teams have gone a step further and found applications which ensure that we remain on top of our projects. Trello has greatly assisted us in keeping up to date with critical activities that we need to focus on to ensure we are on top of our tasks. I therefore firmly believe that technology can be one of the key drivers to bridging the gap between clients and businesses as we go forward.

Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) undergoes revamp From limited immigration checkpoints, to long queues and only two baggage carousels, NAC and the Government in December 2018 decided to roll out a HKIA upgrading Project currently estimated to be worth N$ 245 Million. N$95.2 million of this amount will come from NAC own resources while the balance will be provided by the shareholder. The upgrading project, to start in 2019, will include the revamp and modernizing of the check-in and departure halls, security screening point, arrivals hall and the luggage handling areas. Installation of a CCTV and intrusion detection system at HKIA has already commenced. The upgrade will also include the upgrading to introduce latest advance technologies and software systems related to self-check ins and screening for both passengers and luggage.
CONTACT DETAILS Namibia Airports Company 5th Floor, Sanlam Centre, Independence Avenue, Windhoek PO Box 23061, Windhoek, Namibia Tel: +264 (0) 61 295 5000 Fax: +264 (0) 61 295 5022 E-mail: communications@airports.com.na Website: www.airports.com.na Facebook: Namibia Airports Company Limited
The upgrade work will have minimal effect on the current airport operations, which will continue as usual. The old terminal, known as Terminal One, currently only used for VIP movements, will also form part of the work to be done to have a dedicated international departure and arrival Terminal as well as a Domestic departure and arrival Terminal. This will go a long way to make HKIA as one of the advanced airport in our Region. Congestion at HKIA is not only causing discomfort to the passengers but also creating a number of issues pertaining to the compliance of aviation regulations, especially due to prevalent mixing of screened and unscreened passengers at certain intervals of the day. Enjoy your flights with us at HKIA!
