Public transport is available to most tourist destinations in Namibia. In Namibia one drives on the left. There are bus services from Windhoek to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Vic Falls, Swakopmund, Harare, Lusaka and many other smaller busses which connect most of Namibian regions. Namibia’s main railway line runs from the South African border, connecting Windhoek to Swakopmund in the west and Tsumeb and Oshikango in the north. There is an extensive network of international and regional flights from Windhoek. Domestic charters to all destinations.
HEALTH No inoculations are necessary. Should one enter from a country in which yellow fever prevails, one should have proof of vaccination against such disease. Malaria-prophylaxis is recommended if traveling to far northern Namibia during summer.

Each artwork vibrates with an energy and boldness which sings of Africa, and it’s doing just that on private and corporate walls around the world. ARTIST PROFILE
P
eter Pharoah's work is intense, emotional and, for those who live in Africa, or who’ve left a piece of themselves here, a glorious and constant reminder of the raw beauty and drama of the continent. Peter is the best person to describe his inspiration: 'I have a passion for Africa and its people. The heat, dust and textures are my inspiration and the beauty, strength and pride of the people make interesting subjects, their faces providing a vehicle to portray a feeling of Africa. My wildlife, seascapes and abstracts are created with the same strength, colour and energy as the
African tribes; all these subjects characterise the warmth and strength of the African continent.' Born in Johannesburg, schooled at Kearsney College in Kwazulu-Natal, Peter can’t remember when art wasn’t a part of him and his life. At school, he gathered numerous prestigious awards… from the illustrious Natal Schools Art Award to Grahamstown Art Festival Award. He went on to study art and graphic design at the Witwatersrand Technicon, where he won the Wilsenach Young Designer's Award.

On graduating, he joined Young & Rubicam, an internationally recognised advertising agency, where he worked as an art director and illustrator. He left in 1994, and began working as a freelance illustrator in the advertising industry where he was proficient in all mediums, airbrush, pastels, gouache, acrylics, and so on. Four years later, Peter moved to the Wilderness in the Garden Route, and after initially being represented by the Everard Read Gallery, he opened his own space – the Pharoah Art Gallery – on the banks of the Wilderness Lagoon. Sadly, in 2010, a devastating fire destroyed the historic building where the gallery was located, and his entire collection of original artworks and prints as well. It wasn’t easy returning to his easel after that, but Peter did. In a sense, what he’d been through was cleansing, as his artwork took on a different energy, and he explored new techniques. The extraordinary work he creates today is the result of that turnaround.

When Peter chooses subject matter, he searches through his own library of material for reference, or heads out to source it. He’s an adventurer who, when not at his easel, yearns for the great outdoors, whether it’s hang gliding or kite surfing. He also fulfilled a lifelong dream of obtaining his private pilot’s license so he could take trips into the bush in search of reference and inspiration. He often visits out of the way places, where – he says – “the heart, soul and spirit of Africa still beats to its own majestic rhythm. Not all my expeditions are about gathering reference, but rather a journey of rediscovery as an artist. An opportunity to reconnect with the African bushveld that reawakens one’s love for the simple things.” Peter has a number of collections, select thematic bodies of work which include the African Kaleidoscope series – wildlife; and African Renaissance – faces of Africa. Magnificent, bold,
powerful women in rich, rich colours, or wildlife in classic poses or magnificently abstracted. women’s empowerment project located on the lush, green banks of Windhoek’s Goreangab Dam, Penduka Village in its current state has been a creative haven for vulnerable women from the surrounding township of Katutura since 1996. Meaning ‘wake up!’ in the local languages of Oshiwambo and Otjiherero, Penduka is a call to action, “to help women create their own jobs using the skills they already use in their daily lives, such as sewing, embroidery, basketry and pottery.” The spokesperson, a Peace Corps Volunteer presently in charge of Community Economic Development for the Penduka Trust, explains that Penduka was co-founded in 1992 as a DutchNamibian partnership between Christien Roos and Martha Muulyau. The emphasis was on helping disadvantaged women to improve their own standards of living, but also those of their extended families and immediate environment, by providing them with the skills to launch their own businesses. “In the early years Penduka reached out to the most vulnerable women, especially those with disabilities or suffering from AIDS/HIV, which limited employment. Today Penduka continues to provide income opportunities for women, including those whose parents died early, were alcoholics, or suffered with AIDS, factors that often force young girls to drop out of school. Or they are women who flee Gender Based Violence and now have children dependent on their mothers’ incomes. Not all women who work at Penduka meet this profile, but what they all have in common is a commitment to their own families and their children’s education.”

With the vision to be a self-sustaining social enterprise that provides a reliable income, Penduka currently employs 30 women and 3 men in high quality arts and craft production, hospitality services, and garden and poultry production. As part of the larger Penduka community, 50 women from Katutura embroider the KWEG or thick stitch table runners and cushion covers, while another 150 women in Otjiwarongo embroider Penduka textiles. Not only a centre of creativity for local women, Penduka Village is also open to day- and overnight visitors, offering tours through the production facilities where women can be admired sewing, embroidering, crafting glass beads and jewellery, making batik (personal classes can be arranged in advance), or creating pottery. Accommodation is available in bungalows, backpacker units or campsites, all with beautiful views over the dam. Open daily, at the on-site restaurant favourites like chicken and pap, freshly baked bread and veggies from the garden are served, while traditional Oshiwambo meals and dances can be arranged for visiting groups. Or bring your own braai and make use of the facilities while enjoying the spectacle of birds flying about and building their nests. Xaus Lodge is located in the South African sector of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP), an immense desert area, with grass-covered sand dunes. Directions to the Lodge include “head 30 km into the desert, reached after driving over 91 sand dunes from the turn-off…”. If you’re looking for the extreme beauty which only the desert holds, a star-filled night sky quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen, and time out from everything you know, !Xaus Lodge is where you need to be. Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was previously known as the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park on the South African side and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. It was a single ecological unit, as well as the international border between the two countries. At over 3,5 million hectares, it’s almost twice the size of the Kruger National Park (and about the same size as the Netherlands) – it’s jointly managed by the South African and Botswanan wildlife authorities. The long-term rainfall average is just 213mm per annum, which classifies the Kgalagadi as a true desert.
In 2002, the ‡Khomani San and Mier communities reached a historic land settlement agreement with the government of South Africa and SANParks, which restored a large tract of land to the communities that had once roamed or farmed this area. SANParks is responsible for the environmental management of the park, while the land settlement agrees to provide the communities with an allocation of funds for the purpose of constructing a tourism facility to be jointly owned by the two communities. Transfrontier Parks Destinations (Pty) Ltd, TFPD, was established in 2004 to manage, market and operate community-owned hospitality facilities in Transfrontier Parks and adjacent Conservation Areas. The foundational purpose of TFPD is to partner with Communities in commercialising their tourism assets. Pronounced ‘kaus, !Xaus Lodge is a place to experience a unique desert environment. The Lodge complex comprises a central lodge building and 12 individual en-suite chalets (one family unit which sleeps 4 people), each with its own deck

overlooking a vast saltpan and waterhole fed with fresh water. The central lodge building consists of a welcoming reception, cosy lounge, and dining area which overlooks the pan – the furniture is hand-made in Upinton, as well as images burnt by Bushmen artists. There’s a large observation deck from which star gazers can enjoy the unpolluted night sky, and a swimming pool to provide cool relief from the desert heat. Wood is a precious commodity in the Kalahari, so the inviting fire in the boma is made in the traditional method with three or four crossed sticks around which everyone huddles companionably.
The lodge is equipped with a generator. In order to limit the environmental impact, the generator operates between 7 and 10am and 5 and 10pm. There is no cell phone, Wi-Fi or TV signal here - telecommunications signals don’t reach the Lodge. The Lodge and the vehicles have 2-way radio links with SANParks facilities. Satellite phone and email available only in cases of emergencies. Wonderful hours of silence and an opportunity to unwind from day-to-day life, enjoy the digital detox! At the art and craft shop, you can purchase locally made Bushman crafts as well as crafts made in the wider Kalahari. For birdwatchers, there have been 264 species recorded

ycling is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing sports, and mountain biking in particular. Young and old alike are hopping on to bikes, enjoying the roads less travelled, and experiencing parts of the world from an entirely different perspective. Flamingo asked the responsible product manager for the Namibia tours, Joana Runnebaum from African Bikers Tours, about their Cycling The Highlights Of Namibia Tour, what it entails, and whether you and I would be eligible to join them? One thing’s for sure, it’s a great way to meet new people, have a whole lot of laughs, keep fit and challenged…and see the highlights of a country in the company of professionals who know it well. Where does the tour go, and how long is it? The tour ‘Cycling to the highlights of Namibia’ starts and ends in the Namibian capital of Windhoek. We visit numerous famous sightseeing spots, including the Fish River Canyon, the Namib Desert, the coastal town of Swakopmund, the famous landmark Spitzkoppe, and ancient Khoisan rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. At the end of the tour, we head off on safari in an open game drive vehicle in Etosha National Park to see the Big Four. You can choose a 14-day or 18-day tour (only the 18-day tour includes the Fish River Canyon).

Who leads the tour? We have qualified German-speaking cycling guides, who accompany our clients on the bike, while our back-up vehicle drives a little distance behind the group. Where do you stay the night, and how would you describe the accommodation? Our accommodation on this tour ranges between 2 and 4 star facilities and is a combination of lodges and guest houses. In the evening, the group comes together to enjoy dinner at the accommodation or in a nearby restaurant. How many people do you limit the tour to? Our group size is between 8 and 15 participants. How fit do we have to be? How many hours per day would you generally ride? Your level of fitness should be fair to medium - we cycle 40 to 60 km a day, at a maximum altitude of 400 meters. Do we bring our own bikes, or do you supply? Our tour price includes a MTB Hardtail bike for the duration of the tour, however we also offer E-Bike MTBs at a surcharge. All our bikes are equipped with a bottle holder and a 15-litre pannier bag for each client.

O
ne of the wine industry’s biggest challenges is to realise that the success of that product in the bottle and glass is exposed to the vagaries of fashion. Those of us still thinking that it is trendy to drink a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon while wearing Levi’s and listening to Taylor Swift are in for a rude awakening – the future of the wine industry depends on its ability to appeal to the new generation of consumers whose consideration and understanding of wine culture and tradition are mostly different to what has been the case to date. If the wine industry wishes to remain relevant against the plethora of other drinks and consumables, it simply has to be in-synch with modern trends. And currently there are factors relevant to this, and worth considering. Predictions of pertinent trends are the following:
Non-Alcoholic Wine For a traditionalist, this is a hard one to swallow, but the reality is that wines free from alcohol or containing a tiny amount, are becoming all the rage. Last year the United Kingdom, South Africa’s largest wine market and always a leader in wine trends, saw demand for alcohol-free wines grow by almost 70%. More and more people of between the ages of 18 and 30 are declaring themselves alcohol-free. Not only for the health aspects, but because it has become “cool” to stay sober while those around you are acting boisterously and heating up the room with their drinkers’ breath. Wine countries around the world are thus jumping on the bandwagon, releasing wine from which the alcohol has been removed or cut to a level vastly lower than the average of between 12% and 14%. Van Loveren in South Africa has been one of the first - its Almost Zero wine coming in at 0.5% And let’s be serious: once an international liquor behemoth such as SAB starts making a non-alcoholic Castle Lager, you know this is becoming a thing.
Vegan Wines The vegan wave is reaching tsunami proportions as people the world over are following diets devoid of meat, dairy and any other animal product. Some even shun honey, the final product derived from the sweat on the brows of those toiling bees. A few years ago the concept of veganism was limited to the impression of a few flower children eating lentil lasagne while tuning their guitars on a deserted beach. This is no longer the case – veganism has entered the mainstream, with various American researchers having named veganism the number one food trend for 2019. And this trend is rampant in the world’s leading wine markets. There’s been a 600% increase in people identifying themselves as vegans in the U.S over the last three years. According to a report by research firm GlobalData, only 1% of U.S. consumers claimed to be vegan in 2014. In 2017 that number rose to 6%. In the UK the number of vegans has increased by 350% compared to a decade ago, according to research commissioned by the Vegan Society in partnership with Vegan Life magazine. Over 600 000 British people regard themselves as vegan, and the increase shows no signs of abating. Even China – the world’s second largest wine market - is going vegan: research predicts that China’s vegan market will grow more than 17% between 2015 and 2020. And in Hong Kong 22% of the population reports practicing some form of a plant-based diet. And despite its reputation as a meat-eating region, veganism is on the rise in southern Africa with vegan markets and restaurants opening in all major centres.

So what has veganism to do with wine? Well, during certain stages in the winemaking process, animal products may be used to clarify and fine the wines. This includes egg-white, for which a vegan is as adverse to as Jacob Zuma is to a tax audit. Producers still using animal products would benefit from finding alternatives, and using the vegan-friendly status as part of their marketing collateral. Veganism is no longer a fringe movement, but a growing commercial force.
Organic Wine This is wine made from grapes grown in vineyards that are not exposed to any chemical fertilisers or pesticides. Only natural weed-killers and pest-removers, and natural fertiliser such as compost and manure is used. And as anyone who has witnessed the increase over the years in supermarkets purporting to sell “organic”, “free-range” or “natural” produce can attest to, the demand of the modern consumer veers to good and natural above anything else. This includes wine, with organic wine going through the roof in countries like America, Britain, Germany and Scandinavia. Southern Africa always appears to be a year or two behind, and the wine-drinking public still has to get their collective heads around the “organic” wine concept. Here the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirit Awards took a leading role already a decade ago in offering a trophy for Best Organic Wine. The 2018 RX South Africa Trophy for the Best Organic Wine was awarded to Waverley Hills for their 2017Grenache. Once organic wines become mainstream due to a combination of consumer demand and uptake from the retail sector, we are going to see a proliferation of wines classed organic.
Gin, and specifically craft gin made in South Africa, has turned the spirits category on its head with imaginative packaging and brand-owners’ personal interaction with the consumer. It has been one of the most dynamic categories the southern African liquor industry has seen to date. The next wave, or so it is said by industry sages, is going to come with rum, that dark spirit so beloved of pirates, made from sugar cane. The boom in rum is apparently driven by its golden brown colour as the neutral visual appeal of gin is becoming staid. Well, if it is dark spirits that is going to lead the way, what about brandy? Perhaps this is now the chance the brandy industry has been waiting for to re-invent itself with stylishly eye-catching bottles and by expanding the flavour profile with the addition of fruit-flavour or spice. This could see brandy grabbing the imagination of a whole new range of instagram-snapping and tattooed hipsters. Who are very welcome!
Regionality and Origin For me, this prediction means I am ending on a high as regionality and origin lies at the very heart of what makes wine so special. International research shows that Place of Origin plays an increasingly important role in the wine consumers’ choice. Without an address, a Chardonnay is just another Chardonnay, as a Pinotage is just a Pinotage. State Stellenbosch, Swartland, Robertson or Hemel-en-Aarde as the specific wine’s place of origin, and the value proposition increases. Modern consumers want to know where their drink comes from, and with its very existence dependent on a region, area and piece of geographic heritage, wine can do this like no other liquid in the world. And will, hopefully, always be fashionable.
Brandy Sales of brandy in southern Africa has taken a drubbing over the past two decades. As a category it could not keep up with the consumers’ demand for fashionable and exciting products. Plus, the huge marketing budgets of the international spirits brands put brandy in the shade.

As we drove around the curve towards Spreetshoogte Pass and caught the first glimpse of the rugged landscape lying barren in the hot summer sun, we “wowed” our way to the viewpoint. No matter how many times I have been here before, it is near impossible to drive by without getting snap happy and capturing the steepest pass in the country on camera first. There are few things as liberating as hitting the road to the south. The mere thought of the transition from tar road to gravel already conveys a holiday feeling that replenishes the spirit. Open spaces, unpolluted air, a remoteness that eventually turns into soft dunes of all shapes and sizes. Horizons stretching as far as the eye can see, speckled with grazing gemsbok in the distance. Festive season celebrations were long forgotten. January is usually a jampacked month for most Namibians as we get back to the grind. But there is never a lack of time to travel and catch a breather. At the end of the month, with an all-girls group of friends, we set off to Namib Desert Camping2Go’s recently constructed campsite in the south. We wanted… needed to be as close to nature as possible. To get away from civilisation. To soak up the sounds of nature when sitting around the campfire at night.

Among the four of us, camping does not feature on our list of strengths, granted that we are not kitted out for it. But we do have one thing in common: our love for nature. Choosing a campsite was thus simple … Namib Desert Camping2Go – the Namibian version of glamping. Although glamping - i.e. glamorous camping - is frowned upon by many traditional campers, for the past decade the world has been going wild over this travel trend. Travellers felt the need to be close to nature without the hassle, especially for shorter trips. Knowing that this luxury camp was awaiting us, we had time to take the scenic route. We continued to Solitaire, a beloved pitstop for cake and coffee at McGregor’s Bakery. A road sign instructed “Dead slow”, and we wouldn’t have had it any other way. Mostly due to the heat not allowing any fast or sudden movements.
NAMIB DESERT LODGE Our next stop was the Camping2Go site. With everything already set up, we had more than enough time on our hands. So, we drove to Namib Desert Lodge, about a kilometre away. Upon entering the lodge’s garden, we felt like a Namibian version of Alice in Alice in Wonderland, who fell down a meerkat hole. Had we stumbled upon paradise? Sparkling blue swimming pools surrounded by lush lawns where chirping birds flit from one tree to the next. Yet we were well aware of the surrounding desert with ancient fossilised dunes peeking out above the trees. This was where we waited out the heat.
NAMIB DESERT Camping2Go I remember a time when my mum used to pack my bag for the holidays, and everything I needed was just “miraculously” there. That is how it felt unpacking the kitchen utensils from the crates provided. From braai tongs, a cast iron pot for cooking pap or potjie to one of those essential braai casseroles that no Namibian family can live without, and even a pair of kitchen scissors. You name it! We placed the firepit in the nearby riverbed with a view of the fascinating dunes. On the braai (or barbecue as some might know it), chops and sosaties (meat kebabs) sizzled away on the hot coals. With no other campers around for the night, we were utterly entrenched in nature. After dinner we switched off all the lights while enjoying the dim red smouldering of the last coals, and turning our eyes skywards felt like taking a dip in the Milky Way, the most rejuvenating swim one can imagine. And then it was time to take out the guitar for some campfire singing before bed.

ACTIVITIES IN THE DESERT Then it was time for an active adventure: exploring the desert on e-bikes. After a couple of “ooooh� moments, we got the hang of riding fat-tyre bikes. I learned that it is better to kickstart on power-level 3 when in thick sand, instead of winging it on manual mode and risking a face plant. The earth started turning golden, which is when we met up with our guide for a sundowner drink. We climbed up a small dune where each of us were served refreshing pink gin-and-tonics. It was not long before the pink in our glasses seamlessly blended in with the colour of the horizon after the sun had set. The evening desert chill kicked in and we headed back to camp.

SESRIEM CANYON
The desert has two moods – ice cold and scorching hot. There is no better way to experience it than with an excursion to Sossusvlei. We departed before the crack of dawn and arrived at the gate just before opening time. As we headed to Deadvlei, the surrounding mountains became a delightful display of fifty shades of sunrise. Some of us decided to brave it in short-sleeved clothing, while the smarter ones wore warmer clothes on board the open safari vehicle that took us all the way to the point where we had to start walking.
We headed to the nearby Sesriem Canyon, obviously not without a large supply of water. A walk inside the 30-metre deep canyon offered welcome respite from the heat. It is said that the canyon is one kilometre long, but somewhere along the walk it splits in two, so I am not sure how it is measured. But we most definitely got more than 10 000 steps in for the day.
The sand was ice-cold, but the velvety texture made it feel like I was walking on something that dreams are made of. This is where the famous Big Daddy is located, the highest dune in the desert, offering a leg workout like no other. And as you make your way down to Deadvlei, you arrive in a photographer’s paradise – dead, yet undecomposed camelthorn trees surrounded by apricot-coloured dunes against a clear-blue sky. We spent quite some time here and made our way back at around 10 am. Remember the smart ones I mentioned above? They had stripped off their winter layers and now had to carry them back while the rest of us were unencumbered by bulky backpacks.
Before bed that night we opened all the tent flaps to allow the cool air and the music of the night inside. None of us intended to wake up before sunrise, but as the sun rose the following morning and set the fossilised dunes ablaze, the colourful sky lured us all out of bed.
Back at Namib Desert Lodge, cool drinks and the pool awaited us, after which we went for a hike on the beautiful desert reserve. Standing atop the edge of a hill overlooking the plains with its abundant gemsbok, it is almost unthinkable that only fifteen years ago, the wildlife population had vanished due to reckless, uncontrolled hunting. The reserve is now teeming with healthy populations of fauna.
Wrapped in the comfort of our blankets, we sat on the terrace enjoying the cool morning air while the water for our first cup of coffee was heating up. I couldn’t help thinking to myself, “Never look down on glampers. Their camp light will outshine yours.” If there are ways to get closer to nature, we will always find it. Annelien Robberts

an Dommisse is an architect with a passion for alternative, environmentally friendly construction methods. In 2013, he founded the EcoBrick Exchange (EBE), a recycling nonprofit, which – among other things - builds township preschools using upcycled plastic waste. His motivation? “We want to protect the environment from plastic, as well as support Early Childhood development.” “The Delft School was funded by the City of Cape Town,” says Dommisse. “I was contracted to facilitate skills training programmes within the local schools, so that EcoBricks were made in the surrounding neighbourhood. In addition, some veteran EcoBrickers donated their bricks to support the project. The school opened its doors in January 2018. It was built as a showcase, so people visit the building to see how it was made. “The original plan was focussed on building EcoBrick preschools, but building a school is a very long task - we’re finding that the schools have multiple needs, so we’ve chosen to break it into bite size projects, and create, for example, an EcoBrick vegetable garden at the school.” Take a look at the EcoBrick Wicking raised gardens/beds at Eros School for the disabled – wicking means, ‘acting to absorb or draw off liquid by capillary action’. In just this project alone, 100 kilograms of non-recyclable plastic was excluded from the environment; 12 differently abled students were trained; 296 EcoBricks were

used in the construction, and 300 students benefited by access to the raised garden. So, what is an eco-brick? Simple. Get a two-litre plastic cooldrink bottle, stuff it tightly with recyclable soft plastics. Dommisse says, “Just twist those soft plastics, then use a pipe or stick to stuff it down so the bottle is ‘unsquishable’. It becomes very hard. We use EcoBricks as a tool to create something of value, using very basic, available soft packaging material which is currently not being recycled.” But EcoBricks aren’t simply about building schools – there’s a wide range of structures which can be created. Previously, the legislation for building EcoBrick schools in South Africa didn't exist - Dommisse and his team created the first municipally approved plan. They did this 'by the book', so it could serve as a precedent for others to follow. Building with EcoBricks is very different to building with normal bricks. Dommisse explains: “Number 1 - they are not load bearing and so need to be held within structural frames. But this is the case with most building projects. (such as concrete, timber or steel). Number 2 - they must not be left exposed to the sun as the plastic will photo degrade. Number 3 - if detailed correctly, EcoBricks can be reused again and again each time the building is demolished. {On a side note - in 2012 a study indicated that 18% of SA landfill sites consisted of construction rubble, versus 2% food packaging.} I'd say it's more important for an engineer to be consulted, as he/she will need to sign off on the building's structural performance.”

They aren’t doing anything with their waste, and when they start EcoBricking, they see that their waste output halves. That makes them more likely to start recycling and start composting
because they’ve seen how they can minimise their waste.” Ian Dommisse has green fingers, that’s for sure: “With landscaping projects becoming more of a focus, I’m in my element surrounded by nature, its magic and its beautiful creatures great and small.”

The Benefits of Training to become a Pilot A survey done by Brown Aviation Lease found that people who train to become pilots acquire or refine their skills in confidence, multi-tasking, time management, problem-solving and adaptability. In addition to their results, other personal reflections on the skills acquired as a pilot include the ability to make a quick decision; to think both creatively and analytically at the same time, to see the details and the big picture at the same time and to trust something other than yourself. These are general life skills that can be beneficially applied in any work context and interpersonal relationships. Apart from the benefits of learning and applying these life skills, learning to become a pilot opens the door to another ever-pressing concern that we all face on a daily basis – acquiring and maintaining a steady source of income. The need for professional pilots is increasing. Based on a ten-year forecast, the airline industry will need to produce 70 new type-rated pilots per day to meet global demand. This forecast points to the many global opportunities one can take up as professional pilot. Within the South African context, we are reading daily about young adults that have completed their professional qualifications without much hope of getting work. A career as a pilot, can secure a well-paid future for young adults. Training can commence from the age of 15 years and the young adult can complete his/her Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) within 2-3 years. The implication thereof is that you can start earning an income as instructor at the age of 19 and apply for a lucrative airline position at 21.

alking for days, chatting or in silence, simple evenings, bold landscapes…it clears the head, and restores the soul. It also pushes up your fitness levels… Elize Kruger is one of the partners of the Namaqua Camino, and she chatted about a few of the Dos and Don’ts before committing yourself to this wonderful walking expedition: “The oldest participant to complete the Namaqua Camino is a fit and healthy 77 year old lady – doing her first long distance walk ever! The saying: “You are never too old and it is never too late” certainly applies to her! There is no age limit restricting you to participate in the walks, but we do recommend you consult your doctor beforehand if you have any chronic or other health issues. And fitness levels? “Before you embark on the Namaqua Camino, it’s imperative you be walking fit,” says Elize. “We suggest you start with a regular exercise programme at least two months before your walk, including at least two long distance (25 kilometres or more) excursions. Some of the daily stages will challenge your fitness and stamina at times - particularly if the weather turns unusually hot as it does occasionally during May (autumn), August and September (spring) - which are the seasons
when the Namaqua Camino dates are always planned around.” The Namaqua Camino route sets out from the quaint coastal village of Hondeklip Bay, situated in the Namaqualand Sandveld, traverses inland on day one, crossing the Namaqualand Hardeveld towards and eventually into the Namaqualand Klipkoppe. All of the above biomes form part of the unique and endangered Namaqualand succulent Karoo region. The terrain changes daily as the route meanders through dry river beds, sandy tracks, and gravel roads. Each daily stage presenting its own challenges and scenery. The total distance of the Namaqua Camino is 260 kilometres and is done over 10 days, averaging between 25 and 30 kilometres per day. Flamingo asked Elize about the nitty gritty bits of the trip. This is slack-packing, so no heavy rucksacks? No, we have all been there and done that - no more slogging that bulky rucksack along! You walk with a light pack to carry daily supplies of drinking water, lunch, extra shoes, and socks etc, while your heavy gear is transported by our support vehicles

to the next overnight camp. Your personal belongings and sleeping gear must be packed into two compulsory custom made tog-bags which can either be bought or hired from us. This arrangement helps us to pack and fit all the camping gear and belongings onto the limited space of the transport vehicles. Tell us about overnight accommodation? All the overnight camps are situated on private farms and in the coastal section of the Namaqua National Park. The first camp (day one) is at the site of a historical little church in the now derelict village of Wallekraal. At the end of day three, we set camp in the shadow of a huge boulder called Bethelsklip – so named by the well-known missionary Reverend Barnabas Shaw when he held a sermon there in 1816. Facilities in the overnight camps are basic. Water is rationed to 5 litres per person per day for personal use. Eco (bucket type) toilets are set up at the overnight camps and along the route. You will be responsible to pitch your own tent when you arrive at the overnight camp. All meals are served in our custom made communal tent.
What about meals? Who cooks? We serve a sweet snack, coffee, and tea upon arrival at the overnight camp. A two course dinner is served at 19h00 in the communal tent. Fresh fruit, coffee, tea, and rusks are served in the mornings. We also provide bread, butter and spreads for you to prepare sandwiches for lunch on the road. All the meals and snacks are prepared by Ina and crew in our kitchen tent and on the campfire. The freshly baked bread and seafood dinner at the Varswater beach camp is a particular favourite among the hikers. We do cater for ovo-lacto vegetarians but unfortunately cannot, due to logistics, cater for any of the other dietary preferences. Unlimited drinking water is always available along the route and in the camp. Bring your own alcholic and other drinks and, where possible, we will do our best to supply ice for the (supplied by us) cooling boxes. Who leads the Camino? Each hiker walks at his or her own pace or if they prefer, in a group. The route is clearly marked but not guided except in certain inaccessible (to the support vehicle) areas, in which case

one or more of the crew will join the hikers along that particular stretch. A support vehicle monitors the hikers throughout the day to keep track of and assist any hiker who lags behind or is experiencing difficulties. How many people can you take at one time? We take only 25 hikers per walk. This ensures the group is comfortable for our crew to handle and attend to and that by day 10, just about everyone in the group departs as a close-knit group of friends. What do participants say about the trip? We have had only positive feedback from all of the participants. We are continously fine tuning and improving the route and other logistics and evaluate all input and suggestions from the hikers after every walk. Reviews from previous participants can be found on our website at http:// /feedback.html Any anecdotes? Each hiker is issued with a Namaqua Camino passport and receives a daily stamp to confirm that he or she has completed the distance for that day. If they fail to complete a stage, they get a “mark� of 25/30 or 20/30 (30 being the full distance for that day) next to the daily stamp. One of the hikers who preferred to walk on his own and was always lagging behind, got so pre-occupied at times, he often completely failed to see the route markers where the track would split or veer off and thus he just carried

on for a few kilometres until the crew eventually ‘recovered’ him again. He did many extra kilometres per day and would, more often than not, get “marked” 20/27 or 32/30. Is it considered a fun trip? The Namaqua Camino is not a race or competition. It is an adventurous excursion for anyone who wants to experience a unique and extraordinary environment at grassroots level (pun intended). It is also a very rewarding way to get back to basics – away from everyday pressures and challenges. As mentioned before, you will meet and make new friends for life. It is never too late and you are never too old - your feet are made to walk!

Uis Fly-In Among pilots and their families, the annual three-day Fly-In is a highly anticipated event in Namibia. Once again – after the great success of last year – it’s happening at Uis. Words by Heidi Snyman Photographs by Jay Roode

hen pilots meet, no matter where they’re from, or where they’re going…they have an instant connection. They want to talk about flying, they want to fly together, then they want to talk some more. Those early fly-ins way back when, used to happen as snap decisions, and usually took place on different airfields, farms and wherever they could find a suitable landing. In 2003 Kücki (Wolfgang Kühhirt) from Rostock Ritz Desert Lodge initiated the first Rostock Ritz Fly-In. Nine further Fly-In’s followed there - excluding 2009, when Kücki had his crash at Eros - but by then, it was the right time to change the venue, as some of the pilots knew the area too well. Talking to Kücki about what made the Rostock Fly-Ins so special, he says, “Participation of the two L39 jets, and the inauguration of the
runway with landing lights.” He added, “Med Rescue still landed for a courtesy visit, and we had numerous visits by South African pilots like Johan Ferreira, Marie de Klerk, Allen Fergussen and many more.” When the time came to change from Rostock, it was while driving past Uis one weekend in 2014, that Matthias Röttcher, Heiner Schlusche and Heidi Snyman decided to stop there and see if a Fly-In could be held at the Uis Airfield. It could, and the first Uis Fly-In was held that same year. This year will be the 5th Uis Fly-In, and it takes place from May 30 to June 2, 2019. With the help and assistance of the Uis Airfield Owner and the Uis residents, the event is very established there now. Accommodation is available in and around Uis, as well as camping at Uis Airfield.

This year once again, Basil and his team from Brandberg Rest Camp will braai in the evenings at the airfield. What does a fly-in consist of? A large get-together of pilots with their aircraft, competition flying, and a great deal of talking about flying, over a beer! To organise a band for pilots is usually a waste of money, as they would far rather talk about their experiences than dance! At Uis, the Fly-In is a bit different from the usual. The organisers chose to arrange various competitions in order to keep pilots in the air, instead of on the ground – flying rather than talking about flying. Competitions consist of various tasks like flying a certain distance in the fastest time, finding your way around with clues, precision or rally flying, and Best Spot Landings. Should the weather be poor, competitions can even be done on the ground without aircraft. Prizes are usually given for the overall winners, best spot landings, best airmanship, best radio procedures…but fun prizes are also part of the event…like the wooden spoon for the stirrers, or wooden microphone for bad radio procedures. A raffle will once again take place with big prizes like two flights with Air Namibia, Windhoek to Frankfurt return, two Regional flights and two domestic flights, as well as others. There will also be an auction! Both to cover the costs.

Fly-Ins are also a get together not only for the pilots, but for families and friends! Usually after the competition, the pilots continue flying! Visit the area, fly together - just purely enjoy FLYING! There are even skydivers! Note: Deadline for Participation is April 27, 2019; so, too, for bookings for the legendary braai for the evenings of May 31 and June 1, 2019.
What makes Uis Fly-In special? The little town of Uis is situated near Namibia’s highest mountain: The Brandberg! The whole area is quite spectacular – from the ground and from the air! With sunrise and sunset, the mountain appears in different reds – from that the name Brandberg - Burning Mountain – originated. During the Fly-In, people stay and “kuier” together, as at Uis, it’s not possible to disappear into a town and not return in the evenings (which happens at many Fly-Ins). This transportation has been designed for effective use of interior space inspired by the exterior style of Aquila airplanes. Those floats under the half wings allow this aircraft to land on sea.
Eye See Lamp emits beautiful light in a unique pattern, it’s so mesmerizing that it’s hard to keep your eyes off of this light. The design process involves re-interpreting the screw mechanism of a common bulb; it needs to initiate the light with a rotation of the central acrylic tube. By utilizing an etched acrylic sheet that disperses the light along the designed pattern, the result is beautiful, illusionary light. Designed by Liam Burn, Eye See Lamp is a minimalist lamp with a special form to make sure it has adequate space for battery and internal electric components. The frame of this lamp is carefully designed to ensure it finds balance between space created by the point and sharpness of the point itself. The point should be rounded enough but it doesn’t seem sharp, yet it provides enough space for the components. The frame is crafted from a block of pine wood covered with a white acrylic lid. 8. GENERAL RULES 8.1 Aircraft engaged in Search and Rescue operations are exempted from all airport/aerodrome charges upon presentation of proof that such aircraft was designated by the Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCA) to engage in Search and Rescue operations for that particular flight. 8.2 Aircraft certificated in the private category in their Airworthiness Certification are exempted from passenger charges. All other aircraft are not exempted from passenger charges, irrespective of the use of the aircraft save where another exemption under these rules apply. 8.3 Transit passengers, defined as those passengers stopping temporarily at a particular airport/aerodrome, whether or not they disembark the aircraft, departing on the same aircraft with the same flight number, are exempted from charges at such airport/aerodrome. 8.4 Transfer passengers, defined as those passengers stopping temporarily at a particular airport/aerodrome and disembarking from the aircraft, but departing from an aircraft with a different flight number, whether or not it is the same aircraft are not exempted from passenger charges at such airport/ aerodrome. 8.5 Namibian and foreign State aircraft in the service of the military, customs or police are exempted from landing and parking charges, but not from passenger charges, upon presentation of proof that: 8.5.1 Such aircraft is in the service of the military, customs or police: 8.5.2 The purpose of the particular flight is related to military, customs or police operations; and 8.5.3 In case of a foreign aircraft, that such aircraft is a State aircraft. 8.6 Mercy flights are exempted from after hours charges but not from passenger, landing or parking charges. 8.7 The NAC may, at an airport/aerodrome under its management, refuse the provision of any relevant activity (as defined in s 1 of the Act) to any user with an outstanding account in respect of airport/aerodrome charges. 8.8 All other rules and charges is contained in the Government Notice No 20 published in the Government Gazette of 5 February 1999 (No 2045), remain applicable, save where amended by publication in terms of s 5(1) of the Act. 9. Flight and Cabin Crew Members, defined as members travelling in the course of duty. 10. Infant Passengers, defined as those passengers who have not yet reached their second birthday are exempted from charges at such airport/ aerodrome. 11. Interest at the rate of 2.5% above prime rate (as determined by the financial institutions) will be charged annually on all outstanding balances exceeding 30 days from the invoicing date.

Bank Windhoek presents
Southern Africa’s first Commercial Bank listed Green Bond A financial instrument in which the proceeds are exclusively used towards new and existing Green Projects.
O
n Wednesday, 5 December 2018, Bank Windhoek became the first commercial bank to list a Green Bond, not only in Namibia, but in the Southern African region. A Green Bond is a financial instrument in which the proceeds are used exclusively towards the financing of new and existing Green Projects, which by definition, promote climate or environmental sustainability. The World Bank issued the world’s first Green Bond in 2008, and nearly ten years later, in 2017, the total Green Bond issuance grew to a record high of $155 billion. Moreover, Green Bond issuance is expected to grow to reach $200 billion in 2019, according to Moody’s and the Climate Bond Initiative. The Bank Windhoek Green Bond is listed on the Namibia Stock Exchange and complies with the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) Initiative. The aim of the SSE Initiative is to build the capacity of stock exchanges and securities market regulators to promote responsible investment and advance the sustainability practices of companies. “As a member of Capricorn Group, Bank Windhoek aims to become the Green Financier of choice for sustainability projects in all countries that the Group operates in. As the only 100% locally owned commercial bank in Namibia, Bank Windhoek takes the responsibility to protect our country for future generations very seriously,” said Baronice Hans, Managing Director of Bank Windhoek.
As part of the issuance, Bank Windhoek has developed a Green Bond Framework as the core document against which the management, eligibility and success of the bond issuance is benchmarked.
“As one of the implementing partners of the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Energy Finance (SUNREF) program by Agence Française de Développement’s (AFD), Bank Windhoek was encouraged to investigate the viability of expanding its green lending activities,” commented Ruan Bestbier, Treasury Sales & Sustainability Analyst at Bank Windhoek, who developed the Green Bond Framework. Bank Windhoek adopted the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Definitions and Metrics for Climate Related Activities to assist with the evaluation and selection of potential sustainable projects for its Green
Bond program, in order to classify potential sustainable projects as “Green”. “To put the Green bond process in layman’s terms, a company or person can apply for a loan in order to finance his/her Green project, if the Green project meets all of the technical requirements, the financing of the project qualifies to be funded by the Green Bond proceeds raised at the time of issuance. The successful company or person will be required to repay the loan according to the terms and conditions agreed”, Bestbier added. Projects that focus on Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency & Resource Efficiency, Green Buildings and Sustainable Waste Management amongst others are all eligible to apply for a Green Bond. The official Bank Windhoek Green Bond Framework is available on our website, which will give more clarity around the purpose and detailed requirements of our Green Bond Initiative. The issuance of Namibia’s first Green Bond, is testament to Bank Windhoek’s vision to be the financial partner of choice, ultimately leading to positive change in the country and the Southern African region.
