BITTERWASSER – for high flyers If you’re happier up there than down here… Bitterwasser, in the middle of the Kalahari in Namibia, is for you and your glider Edited by Anne Schauffer Photographs by Hubertus Huvermann

I

f you head south from Windhoek for about two hours, you’ll arrive at Bitterwasser. It was originally a farm near the small town of Hoachanas – that was in 1955 - and over the years, it developed into a haven every glider pilot knows. Gliders operate – and travel great distances – just utilizing the power of nature. Inspired by birds like eagles and storks, glider pilots can travel for eight to nine hours without landing, cover distances of over 1000 kilometres, and achieve average speeds of over 150 kilometres. The flight conditions at Bitterwasser are unique worldwide, and it’s the reason that around 180 pilots from around the world converge annually on this little oasis in the Kalahari. These pilots are mostly very experienced, some are world champions, others hold world records. Within the flight season - November until the end of January – Bitterwasser racks up 3500 overnight stays. Forty five aircraft are transported via ship from Europe to Namibia and back each season. A whopping 1000 flights are executed every year, 400 of them longer than 1000 kilometres. If you add up the number of long distance flights and world records made and broke, Bitterwasser is the best and biggest flight centre worldwide. But there’s more to Bitterwasse than gliders and pilots. With 60 staff working at the Lodge, it’s the largest employer in the area. Take Jeremias. He’s worked at Bitterwasser for over 18 years.

Photographer (and glider pilot), Hubertus Huvermann, meets an astronaut “Do you still remember what you wanted to be when you were a child? I’m pretty sure being an astronaut was in your top ten. Still today, I’d love to be one. Seeing earth from space. Experiencing zero gravity. Setting some speed records with the space shuttle. One who did it, has just left Bitterwasser. Ulf Merbold. He was the second German in space and the only German Astronaut who did three flights. Astronaut - I can’t stop thinking about it. To me, there’s very few things as super exciting as traveling into space. Madness!" “Now I am sitting next to Ulf. We are driving an old, shabby Toyota pick-up. We are taking his glider, a Ventus - that he shares with Bruno Gantenbrink - to the start. All the other pilots are already airborne. We’re relaxed and take our time. Why hurry? That guy has been to space! Which goal do you want to set for yourself after that? We chat for a while. The journey from the glider’s parking lot to the start can take time. The pan is huge and depending on the wind direction, you have to drive quite far. Not too fast of course!" “I can’t help myself - feeling like a student pilot - I have to ask Ulf some questions. But they have to be smart. We have to be on an equal footing. Weather. Of course, nothing better comes to mind than the weather. We are driving under a sky that would fit perfectly in the dictionary next to the definition of ‘Hammerwetter’." "Immediately we are talking about glider pilot’s stuff. Clouds, thermals, tasks and avionics. Somehow you don’t feel like you’re sitting next to an astronaut. “Ulf is such a nice, down-to-earth guy. He relaxes behind the steering wheel while driving our white Toyota across the sand of the Bitterwasser pan. We don’t stop talking. This and that. Then I just want to know: “If you have been into space three times, what’s left to achieve?“ Ulf smiled. It seems as if to him the flights into space have been something normal. Just a consequence of all the events which happened before. A task in life that had to be done." “Ulf has had the chance to experience something fabulous. This has only been possible with the help of very many people working together. With the modern aerospace business, humankind has created something incredible. Ulf is very thankful for having been part of that history, and is happy giving something back to society. Today he supports some social projects, ‘Wings of Help’ being one of them. He tells me about his visits to earthquake zones. Powerlessness. Medication that couldn’t be transported to people in need due to bureaucracy. Refugee camps at the Turkish border. Eight hundred newborn babies and their mothers living in tents in winter." “Ulf has seen the entire world. From space and on the ground. The strongest memory of his space travels that stays in his mind is that “our earth is a spacecraft - we are all flying together in it. A small, sensitive place that we have to take care of.”

It’s like home to him. He takes care of everything. Together with his airfield crew, they rig the gliders, tow them to the start line, and take them back after landing. He takes care of the airfield cars, and the gliders not in use. Last year, he visited Germany. So did the Hoachanas Youth Group, a project formed by a pilot’s wife from Germany. The Hoachanas Children Fund (HCF) was founded in 2000, and it not only supports children of the village, but funds classrooms, a library, a school kitchen, a Kindergarten and more. The HCF is supported by many of the pilots who fly at Bitterwasser, and they sponsor children from Kindergarten through to University. The HCF youth choir visited Germany and sang and played at music festivals throughout that country. Bitterwasser is so much more than just a Lodge with wonderful wildlife; it’s more even than a unique place for glider pilots to do what they love best, among people who have the same passion as they do. Bitterwasser is at the heart of a community, an integral part of it, supporting innumerable families, right in the middle of Namibia. Everybody works together to make life better for all.

T

hree generations of Mombo Camp reach back nearly 30 years, and Wilderness Safaris’ directive for the rebuild and refurbish was entirely cognisant of that complex journey. The new camps would build on those layers of history. The brief therefore to the architectural and design teams, Nick Plewman Architects and Associates and Caline WilliamsWynn from Artichoke, was to maintain the Mombo traditions and story, while innovating, refreshing and remaining true to the site and ethos. Wilderness Safaris Botswana MD, Kim Nixon, foresees the new Mombo camp and guest experience as “a place of harmony: a balance between the camps, the environment and the people who stay here.” “The new Mombo is a show stopper”, says lead interior designer, Caline Williams-Wynn. She’s right. But cleverly, “the old Mombo is still visible in the design, ensuring returning guests feel comfortable in their surroundings too, as well as ensuring an authentic, vintage feel for new guests. We used elements of the old Mombo to keep the feel the same, such as copper lighting and copper cladded fire places; old walkway planks/floors were salvaged to be used as the walled panelling in the curio shop and as breakfast counters in the dining area, while the iconic front doors were reinstalled in each tent – an original Mombo door… that is definitely a feature for Mombo stalwarts.” The designers worked magic, combining traditional and vintage elements with a modern elegance that truly embraces the real essence of Mombo. Mismatched, yet complementary wooden furniture all works together to feature a collection of pieces sourced over the years, and this element in itself, allows a highly personalised feel. It’s extraordinarily beautiful.

“Space was a key factor in the new design”, says WilliamsWynn, “with each tented suite now comprising an expansive entrance, a sitting room with a bar unit, a separate bedroom and bathroom with a dressing area, indoor and outdoor showers and a bathtub that creates a sense of indulgence.” The view out in front of the floodplain is uninterrupted, thanks to the use of wood sliding louvre shutters that can be open or shut completely. Spacious decks are perfect for in-villa dining and private plunge pools and swing beds offer the perfect base for midday relaxation and siestas. Each tented suite has been built on exactly the same place as the previous one, with a slight increase in size out towards the floodplain to facilitate a pool deck. All the vegetation remains, ensuring minimal impact on the environment. Wilderness Safaris hosted a tree expert in camp, to ensure trees were cared for and pruned professionally. Sustainability is always a driver for Wilderness Safaris, and as Nixon says, “Our emphasis in terms of luxury and service excellence has always been on sharing and honouring the amazing natural environment in which we operate.” Wilderness Safaris has used numerous innovative building techniques and materials to improve natural temperature regulation. World-renowned as “the Place of Plenty”, Mombo’s location on Chief’s Island within the Moremi Game Reserve attracts an enormous number and variety of animals, which makes it a hugely sought-after destination. Staying at the new Mombo and Little Mombo camps promises guests an entirely unforgettable safari experience, from the rich wildlife to the myriad wonders of this glorious oasis. S

outh African Laduma Ngxokolo didn’t come from affluent beginnings. On the contrary. Born in Port Elizabeth in 1986, his mother taught him how to handmachine knit at age 16. He had his first experience of textile designing in 2003 when he studied at Lawson Brown High School. Ngxokolo’s flair for knitwear design earned him a bursary from both Port Elizabeth-based Cape Wools South Africa and Mohair South Africa during his B Tech studies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2010. In the same year, Ngxokolo won the SA national leg of the South African Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) Design Competition, which earned him a trip to London where he was awarded first prize internationally. His inspiration? Exploring design solutions suitable for amakrwala – Xhosa initiates. Xhosa is one of South Africa’s dominant ethnic groups, and a manhood initiation is a rite of passage for young Xhosa men. His vision was to create a modern Xhosa-inspired knitwear collection, suitable for amakrwala, who are prescribed by tradition to dress up in new, dignified and formal clothing for six months after the initiation. Laduma had undergone this process, and believed he should design premium knitwear which celebrated Xhosa aesthetics.

Laduma spent time exploring the wealth of Xhosa beadwork patterns, symbolism and colour, and recognised that these would be his greatest source of inspiration for the knitwear. He took his newfound knowledge, and reinterpreted it into modern knitwear, using South African mohair and wool. Ngxokolo continued to design and create for his own knitwear label, Maxhosa by Laduma, and today, his knitwear has captured the imagination of fashion lovers, from London to Paris, Oslo to New York. His list of accolades is long and prestigious. He was awarded the 2014 WeTransfer Scholarship to study masters in Material Futures at the Central St. Martins and graduated in 2016. He’s won innumerable awards, like the 2015 Vogue Italia Scouting for Africa prize to showcase his collections at the Palazzo Morando Show in Milan, Italy. In 2016 - nominated by Tracy Lynch - a shawl he designed won the honour of Most Beautiful Object in South Africa. Knitted in black and white yarn, the shawl boasts the characteristic Xhosa aesthetic for which Ngoxolo is famed. The design is unisex and can be styled in over twenty different ways. It was chosen out of 10 other nominations all handpicked by influential cultural commentators in South African culture. In 2017, he walked away with the Pride of Africa: Africa Fashion Week Barcelona Awards. Laduma Ngxokolo’s Maxhosa knitwear is legendary, and each range is testament to traditions, concepts or people. Like ‘My Heritage, My Inheritance’, a special collection dedicated to his late mother, Lindelwa Ngxokolo, who not only taught him how to hand-machine knit, but was a great patron of the Xhosa heritage. Or ‘Buyele’Mbo’ Collection: Buyel'mbo is a Xhosa phrase often uttered by Xhosa elders when they reminisce about the nostalgic rural lifestyle at the old Xhosa homelands.”

Wine and Spirits: Everybody Loves a Michelangelo Winner Wine and spirits lovers in Southern Africa have never had it so good. With the Western and Northern Cape regions of South Africa making the best wines in the history of an industry dating back to 1659, and with over 8 000 brands to choose from, those who love wine find themselves in a blissful space. Add to this the dynamic local distilling industry making gin, rum, brandy and other elixirs and drinks lovers are in one happy place. But, as experienced and new-generation drinkers know, not all wines and spirits are created equal. Even the most opinionated boffin will admit to now and again requiring some guidance as to a certain wine’s quality and provenance. And this is why the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Competition has been the leading indicator of wine excellence since its inception in 1997. “When Michelangelo began 22 years ago, there were literally only a few hundred wines and spirits available on the market,” says Lorraine Immelman, founder and CEO of the Michelangelo Wine and Spirits Awards. “The growth of the South African wine and spirits industries, as well as its customer base in Namibia, Botswana and other parts of Southern Africa, has seen Michelangelo’s influence growing. For the simple reason: consumers know that the bottles of wine bearing

the Michelangelo prize-winning stickers not only stand-out on the shelf aesthetically, but those wines and spirits have been adjudged to be of exceptional quality. With the plethora of drinks available, the Michelangelo seal of excellence has become a more important indicator of quality than ever.” Sure, there are a number of drinks competitions run out of South Africa. But what has made Michelangelo such an authoritative and unique show? What causes close on 2 000 wine and spirits producer to religiously enter their beloved products into this competition with the hope of winning one of the cherished medals or trophies? “The challenge I had from the outset was how to make Michelangelo stand out by being the pre-eminent show in terms of judging,” says Immelman. “Although it was – and still is - a great expense and logistical challenge, I decided that to make the competition a cut above the rest we had to rely on a judging corps of which the majority are wine experts from outside South Africa,” she says. “For last year’s competition, for example, 28 wine and spirits experts from 22 countries including France, Spain, Germany, Holland and Great Britain came to South Africa for the sole purpose of judging the 1 600 entries we received. “These judges, including sommeliers, journalists, Masters of

Wine and professional critics bring a dimension to Michelangelo, unrivalled by other competitions,” says Immelman. “Their diverse palates, extraordinary judging skills and profound knowledge have been recognised by entrants to the competition as being immense wisdom and insight into the judging process. This is Michelangelo’s unique aspect, and sets us apart.” The award-winning wines and spirits are adorned with the stylish Michelangelo decals which have become recognised as hallmarks of quality for the products concerned, elevating the market presence for the wineries and distilleries by underscoring the quality of the contents in the bottle. Immelman says that being a leader in the field of wine and spirits selection, the Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards have a responsibility to pioneer technological initiatives to add value for entrants and to entrench the faith the market-place has in the winning wine and spirits brands. “Using various experts in the field of digital marketing, Michelangelo last year embarked on a ground-breaking project that as far we know is a world first,” says Immelman. “From 2017 the coveted Michelangelo awards stickers - from silver and gold to double gold and platinum, all the way up to trophy award stickers will carry a QR code. Once scanned on the smartphone of the retail, restaurant or hotel customer, the code will allow access to succinct and varied information on the product, including tasting notes, the producer’s story as well as guide as to where the specific product can be purchased and/or ordered. Data on the major Michelangelo sponsors – an airline, Tsogo Sun and Multi-Color Corporation – will also be accessed.

“Wine is made in the vineyard and spirits crafted in the potstill,” says Immelman. “But it is up to events such as Michelangelo to embrace innovation and technology to ensure the various producers who enter the competition, as well as consumers, benefit from the exposure and marketing initiatives we competitionorganisers embark on.” In a further initiative to broaden its reach, Michelangelo has also entered into a joint venture and shareholding agreement with Media Nova Publishing of Namibia, and Tamasa Trading South Africa, with one objective: To drastically add value and brand recognition and sales to the South African Wine industry by offering publicity and distribution opportunities throughout Africa and the Far East. “We are going into our 22nd year on a high-note,” says Immelman, “and offering amazing added-value and opportunities for producers to join us in celebrating this milestone for Michelangelo.” So there you have it. Buying a bottle of wine or spirit with that elegant Michelangelo label can only mean on thing: you can’t go wrong!

INVESTMENT

Time To Rethink Your Investment Strategy By Monei Pudumo Roos, Head of Institutional Development and Executive Director at Prescient Investment Management...

T

he past has seen an escalation in the debate about the relative merits of active and passive investing in the South African equity market. Domestic and global research show that it is increasingly difficult for active equity managers to outperform passive market indices. For example, data from the S&P Dow Jones Indices LLC show that only 13.5% of South African equity managers outperformed their passive benchmarks over the last five years, while this number is as low as 3.5% globally. If most of active equity managers underperform passive benchmarks, and given that they generally charge high fees, it is tempting to conclude that employing a passive strategy should be the preferred solution for most of those looking to invest in the equity market. There are three reasons why this should be the most logical and sensible thing to do;

• •

Passive strategies are transparent as the portfolio allocation is not discretionary. Passive solutions are inexpensive compared to active investing since there is no need to analyse securities in the index. Passive solutions are generally tax efficient as infrequent rebalancing is unlikely to trigger huge annual CGT bills for voluntary money.

Despite these undisputable benefits of passive over active investment styles, the major downfall of passives has tended to be overlooked by market professionals. The major weakness of a pure passive approach to investing is that the investor is guaranteed to underperform the benchmark after investment management fees and other transaction costs are considered. Put differently, the return to a passive investor should roughly equal the benchmark return, minus the total investment cost.

42

MARCH 2018 | FLAMINGO

INVESTMENT

In our view both active and passive investment styles have significant drawbacks and deciding on whether to use active or passive funds is largely a matter of belief rather than hard evidence. While Prescient Investment Management finds the passiveactive debate quite relevant we believe that there is another avenue that has been overlooked. Acknowledging that the debate between active and passive may never truly be settled, investors should instead sidestep the acrimony and embrace a simple approach that blends both to build a better portfolio. In our experience, combining aspects of both investment styles results in better control of active risk while significantly reducing total investment costs. Our research suggests that adopting a long-term, strategic framework to blend passive (core) and active (satellite) is more efficient than trying to uncover which style works best. Each investment strategy has its merits and shortcomings (elusive alpha and high management fees for active strategies, and guaranteed underperformance after fees for passive solutions), suggesting that the most robust portfolio should be a combination of both. The allocation between the two will depend on the investor’s risk tolerance and objectives. Although the core plus satellite framework seems to resolve the acrimonious debate about active and passive, there is another angle where this solution is even more compelling. Let us suppose that for a 1% annual management fee an investor awards an equity mandate to a value manager where the investor has a 3% tracking error constraint around a given benchmark (for example, Capped Swix). Although simplistic, this example encapsulates the main features in actual active investment decision-making. Now assume that the value manager has proven skill in selecting good value stocks that generate above market returns. However, given the 3% tracking error constraint, it is unlikely the manager will only bet on his proven skill set, opting instead to make use of an optimiser to construct the final portfolio that loads heavily on his views but that respects the investment policy guideline of the tracking error. How different is this final portfolio from the benchmark? How much do the portfolio’s holdings differ from the constituents of the benchmark index ?

“Our research suggests that adopting a long-term, strategic framework to blend passive and active is more efficient.” When a manager overweighs a stock relative to its weight in the index, there is an active long position. The summation of all the active long positions and the absolute value of the summation of all the active short positions divided by two (to avoid double counting) gives the percentage of active share of a portfolio. Our experience shows that for such a portfolio, the active share component is generally around 25%. Alternatively, the value manager has a portfolio that mimics 75% of the benchmark while holding only 25% of shares that reflects his views. Although the manager was paid an active fee, a sizable portion of his final holding is direct exposure to the benchmark. We believe this to be wasteful and would suggest that an astute investor should separate the core and the satellite elements to achieve a cost-effective portfolio while attaining the same tracking error of 3%. The art of combining active and passive therefore lies in the investor’s risk budget, which will inform the allocation between the active and passive investment strategies. In so doing, there is greater transparency between the investor and manager, helping to better manage the investor’s expectations. The point is that the allocation must be managed in a more innovative manner, without taking excessive risk, to at least return index performance after investment management fees. The active portion should therefore be allocated to the market risk that the investor intends to gain exposure to. There are a number of well documented and proven risk premia. These are different equity investment styles such as value, momentum and market beta. This makes it easier for the investor to hold the manager accountable and is more predictable. More importantly, this approach leads to significantly reduced investment management fees at a time when fees are in the spotlight within the investment industry.

Shawnee Shipwreck The battle between the elements - the waves of the sea and waves of the desert. Who wins? Words and photographs by Jermanneke Havemann

E

ver since flying over the Shawnee with Scenic Air in 2006, I’ve been fascinated by this wreck lying against the dunes: a boat lying against the dunes, with the sea in the distance – it was hard to comprehend. But years later, when I was privileged enough to visit the wreck, driving right up to it along the coast, and then a few times more over the years, it became more believable. I could visualise the elements battling each other - the force of the desert sand and the waves of the sea. And it’s never the same winner. Seeing it again in December 2017, it’s clear the sand lost the battle. Since 2011, I’ve visited the Shawnee four times, in 2012, 2013, 2014 and, recently, at the end of 2017. I was amazed at how the ship keeps changing position, lying in a different place every time. It just shows what the sea does to our coast, and likewise, what the desert sand does – it’s like a battle, with no answer as to who will be the strongest? And in between those two forces, the Shawnee. Covered by sand…and next time, not, as the sea takes the sand away. And the worst…rust. It seems that the sea is winning. I was privileged to visit the boat again in Dec 2017, and it was very special. It almost looked as if the boat was ready to sail again! Previously it had been lying against a dune, now you can drive around the boat. That’s because of the battle between the two elements, and this time, the sea definitely won. But how will it look in a few years? Only time will tell. The area is only accessible with a guide who has a permit to enter. I went with Armand Basson of I Dream Africa, and the journey was so enjoyable – I loved the five-day trip from Walvisbay to Meob Bay. Also, on this tour you’ll visit another shipwreck, the Eduard Bohlen as well as some old houses left over from the diamond era: Grillenberger, Holtsasia and Charlottenfelder. This is a wonderful journey into the old history of the Diamond Coast.

SHAWNEE There’s so little that’s known or even published about the Shawnee. Who or what was the Shawnee? The 1976 shipwreck of the Shawnee, a fishing trawler, nosed into the dunes at Conception Bay. In the former diamond rush era of Namibian history, Conception Bay was the entrance to the old mining towns of Grillenberger, Holstazia and Charlottenfelder.

RMB Namibia wins award for Best Trade Finance Provider in the country. Importers and exporters reap trade finance benefits

Innovative solutions

RMB Namibia’s Trade and Working Capital division has recently been recognised as the Best Trade Finance Provider in Namibia by the Global Finance magazine. The award was made based on a number of factors, including transaction volume, global coverage, customer service, competitive pricing and innovative technologies – all of which are part of RMB Namibia’s solutions-driven ethos.

RMB Namibia is at the forefront of providing innovative trade and working capital solutions, which are not only critical for importers and exporters to reduce commercial and settlement risk, but correctly used also improves the business cash flow cycle and enhances profits. While the generic use of traditional trade instruments goes back a long way, the increasingly uniqueness of commercial transactions/contracts demands

66

that trade solutions are accordingly tailored to meet the requirements of trading partners. “In simple terms, trade finance allows buyers and sellers to optimise the cash flow value of transactions by using trade instruments, like a bank guarantee in the acquisition of goods and services. The subsequent reduced transaction risk enables the parties to agree better payment terms,” says RMB Trade and Working Capital transactor, Jason Shikalepo. He joined the bank last year after working for the public and private sectors where he negotiated a number supply and off-take agreements with local and international firms. “To illustrate, trade finance benefits the supplier who can raise cheaper debt against correctly structured bank payment guarantees, whilst the buyer draw comfort that payment will only be made after pre-agreed milestones have been reached.’’ adds Shikalepo. Working capital is key RMB Namibia’s aim is to partner with clients in structuring their short-term funding requirements to allow working capital

to be released to the business. This can either be invested in inventory, extend the debtor payment terms or reduce creditor payment terms. “We use our global relationships and platforms, combined with our local insights across industries and sectors to provide solutions for businesses in all sectors,” says Shikalepo. “We recommend that importers and exporters consult with their bank prior to agreeing on payment terms to discuss whether solutions exist to boost working capital for both parties.” RMB’s Trade and Working Capital division has recognised the need for innovation, encouraged by the RMB group as a whole. This is reflected in the way it does business, the way it services its partners, and the way it mitigates risk through solutionist thinking. MOTORING

The new A-Class: The benchmark in the compact class As youthful and dynamic as ever

A revolution from within

The new A-Class is as youthful and dynamic as ever, but grown-up and comfortable like never before. It completely redefines modern luxury in the compact class, and revolutionises interior design. Technologically the new A-Class not only takes first place thanks to MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience: it also offers a number of functions that were previously the preserve of the luxury class. And although Mercedes-Benz has retained the sporty appearance, the utility value has increased. The new A-Class can be ordered from March onwards, and the market launch commences in the spring.

The interior of the new A-Class is completely redefined with its modern, avant-garde look. Mercedes-Benz has taken a completely new approach, revolutionising the compact class from the inside with a new feeling of spaciousness. The unique interior architecture is shaped in particular by the avant-garde design of the dashboard. For the first time a cowl above the cockpit has been completely dispensed with. As a result, the wing-shaped main body of the dashboard extends from one front door to the other with no visual discontinuity. The Widescreen display is completely free-standing. The air vents in a sporty turbine-look are another highlight.

Exercise in purism Mercedes-Benz User Experience The purist, surface-accentuating design of the new A-Class is the next step in the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of Sensual Purity. On the basis of a compact two-box design, optimised dimensions and proportions have led to a new interpretation of the A-Class’s design. “With the fourth generation of the A-Class, we are redefining modern luxury in the compact class. To do this we have opted for a combination of uncompromisingly dynamic design and an intuitive operating concept,” says Britta Seeger, the member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars sales. “With MBUX – the new MercedesBenz User Experience – we are creating a completely new customer experience.”

The new A-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz model to feature the completely new multimedia system MBUX - Mercedes-Benz User Experience, which also ushers in a new era in Mercedes me connectivity. A unique feature of this system is its ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence. MBUX can be individualised and adapts to suit the user. It thus creates an emotional connection between the vehicle, driver and passengers. “New technologies must place the focus on people and make their lives easier. The new A-Class does this in many ways, and becomes an emotional and intelligent companion,” says Ola Källenius, the member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars.

class. These allow extremely quick and precise, electronically controlled adjustment of the headlamps to suit the current traffic situation. 18 individually actuated LEDs are housed in each headlamp. The daylight-like light colour of the LEDs is easy on the eyes and has a positive effect on concentration. The road ahead is precisely and brightly illuminated. LED High Performance headlamps are a further option. As standard the new A-Class is equipped with halogen headlamps with integrated LED daytime driving lamps.

New, efficient engines

“One good example is MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience: it combines intuitive and natural operation with intelligent, learning software.”

The A-Class has grown up Despite its sporty look, the new A-Class has considerably more utility value, making it as youthful as ever but grown-up like never before. More shoulder, elbow and headroom plus easier access to the rear are clear benefits, as is the larger and more family- and recreation-friendly luggage compartment. All-round visibility has also been considerably improved. This enhances both safety and the impression of spaciousness. The capacity of the luggage compartment behind the rear seats is 370 litres – 29 litres more than in the preceding model. Thanks to two-section rear lights, the loading aperture is 20 cm wider than before, and the luggage compartment floor is 11.5 cm longer.

Intelligent Drive: functions from the S-Class The new A-Class has the very latest driving assistance systems with cooperative driver support, giving it the highest level of active safety in this segment with functions adopted from the S‑Class. For the first time, the A-Class is able to drive semiautonomously in certain situations. To do this it keeps a close eye on the traffic situation: improved camera and radar systems allow it to see up to 500 metres ahead. The A-Class also uses map and navigation data for assistance functions. For example, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC as part of the Driving Assistance package is able to support the driver in numerous route-specific situations, and predictively and conveniently adjust the speed e.g. when approaching bends, junctions or roundabouts. Also on board are e.g. Active Emergency Stop Assist and intuitively understandable Active Lane Change Assist. The new A-Class comes with extended Active Brake Assist as standard.

All the new A-Class models are powered by new, efficient engines. The following three engine variants will be available on the launch of the A-Class, or shortly afterwards: A 200 (120 kW/163 PS) with 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission or six-speed manual transmission, A 250 with 7G-DCT (165 kW/224 PS) as well as A 180 d with 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission (85 kW/116 PS). Innovations in the M 282 with a displacement of 1.4 litres and up to 120 kW include cylinder shutoff (initially in conjunction with the 7G-DCT transmission) and the delta shape of the cylinder head. The second new petrol engine is the M 260 with a displacement of 2.0 litres, 165 kW and 350 Nm. New features include CAMTRONIC for the intake camshaft. Both petrol engine series have a particulate filter as standard.

4MATIC with fully variable torque distribution Also new is the four-cylinder diesel (OM 608) with a displacement of 1.5 litres, up to 85 kW and up to 260 Nm. Its highlights are a near-engine mounted emission control system with AdBlue® technology, a turbocharger with optimised responsiveness and water intercooling. A new 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission is also being introduced. Further new engines will follow. The fuel tank has a capacity of 43 litres as standard, with a 51-litre tank optionally available. On request the new A-Class is available with the permanent all-wheel drive system 4MATIC with fully variable torque distribution. This sporty all-wheel drive system has been developed further, and now offers even more driving pleasure and efficiency.

Suspension: agile and comfortable Like all its predecessors, the new A-Class has a McPherson front suspension. The more powerful versions such as the A 250 and all 4MATIC models have a sophisticated four-link rear suspension. The entry-level A 200 and A 180 d models have a torsion beam rear suspension. As standard the new A-Class is equipped with a comfort suspension with steel springs and DYNAMIC SELECT. The comfort suspension lowered by 15 millimetres has specially configured springs and dampers for more sporty characteristics. The suspension with active damping control enables the driver to choose the preferred damping characteristics.

MULTIBEAM LED headlamps: optimum visibility The optional MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are another example of the technology transfer from the luxury to the compact

A glimpse into the Selinda Adventure Trail When the aircraft touches down on Botswana’s Selinda airstrip, a nervous excitement rises like hot air, mounting as the plane doors are opened and guests disembark. Words and photographs from Great Plains Conservation

T

here is a certain smell about the dry dusty landscapes of Africa… it heightens the eager anticipation of those arriving as to what adventures the next few days hold in store for them. Almost as quickly as our feet touch the ground, we are whisked off in a helicopter to the starting point of the Selinda Adventure Trail: a rustic yet elegant camp, a combination of a walking and canoeing safari focused on discovering the hidden wonders of the ancient Selinda spillway, and reminiscent of the original explorers’ expeditions that traversed Africa’s vast landscapes. Flying above the Selinda Spillway and the path we would be traversing for the next 4 days, provide us with an aerial perspective of the journey we would be taking and the wildlife rich landscape we would be immersing ourselves into. On arrival at the rendezvous point, a charismatic river bushman guide, Kane Motswana, greets us with a dazzling smile and his contagious enthusiasm. A comical yet thorough safety briefing and overview of the plans for the next 4 days is outlined, before we clamber into our canoes for a short practice “rekkie” downstream to our first camp and overnight. It is during this rekkie that Kane assesses boat pairings, weight balance, coordination and a number of other aspects whilst giving clear tips and guidance to those of us who are “beginners”. We arrive in camp at dusk, just before darkness descends, to familiarise ourselves with the camp set up, our bow flex walkin tents, and the rustic alfresco bucket shower and long drop toilet facilities. The set-up is both quaint and elegant with an aura of nostalgic romance and it does not take long for us to all settle in around the camp-fire, sharing stories of our different lives and getting to know our adventure companions for the next 3 nights better.

An early morning wake up call sees us all slowly and sleepily make our way to our canoes and as we sit down, to the level of the banks alongside us, our senses are immediately awakened. We slowly start our paddle downstream, admiring the beauty of the landscape around us, absorbing the sights, sounds and smells that only the true African wilderness can produce. The gentle early morning light bouncing off our reflections in the water automatically creates a sense of calmness and peacefulness. With each arm stroke and paddle, Kane guides us through the adventure, sharing his knowledge, wisdom and passion of not only the area and its history, but also the various species of flora and fauna which work in a co-dependant linkage to make this incredible ecosystem thrive. Along the way, we encounter a number of antelope species grazing and drinking along the spillway, almost “feasting in celebration of their survival from predators through the night before. As we quietly paddled and admired our surroundings, the hours of serenity add up, and before we know it the lunchtime hour has arrived. We round a bend in the Spillway and to our surprise a table has been positioned inside the Spillway itself, allowing us to sit in the cool shallow waters, relaxing and unwinding whilst enjoying the spectacular food produced by the Selinda Adventure Trails team. After satisfying our appetite, and cooling ourselves off with a quick swim, Kane announces that we are doing the next section of the trail by foot.

There is something quite special about exploring the wilderness on foot. Not only are your senses heightened by every step made and what is happening around you, but you take time to look at the smaller aspects of the habitat around you, learning and understanding their intrinsic role within the ecosystem. As we walk, we stop to talk about different plants and their medicinal purposes, the animals leaving their tracks before ours, and the various insects which buzz around us. It was when we came across the spoor of lion that our adrenalin kicked in. We tracked the spoor for almost fifteen minutes before Kane held up his hand and told us all to squat down. We sat and watched in awe as the two lions lazily lifted their heads and flopped back down to continue with their sleep. We eventually backed off and headed back to the Spillway, invigorated for the late afternoon paddle to our second camp for the next two nights. The days that followed incorporated a similar routine of early wake ups, up-close encounters with diverse wildlife species mainly whilst on foot, revitalising lunches and refreshing afternoon swims in the Spillway, followed by evening campfire stories over a delicious dinner. The journey along the Selinda Adventure Trail, like the ebb and flow of the Spillway itself, fluctuates between peace and tranquillity to adrenalin packed moments. Without a doubt one of the most unique, memorable, educational and profoundly impacting experiences which echoes the journey taken by the explorers of the past and reflects Africa, her beauty and her wildness, in all its glory.

The rainmaker Hospitality & Tourism Marketing Academy The rainmaker Tourism and Hospitality Marketing Academy keeps you up to date with the most recent developments in Digital Presence Exposure, Optimization, Reputation and Distribution Management. This is enhanced by over 7 years of in-depth research and involvement in the Southern African hospitality and tourism industry, giving us peerless insight into the various source markets, market segments, value chains and market dynamics.

TIP #9 | Don’t Fight the Increasing Popularity of OTA’s, Here’s Why... (Part 3 of 4) “Thomas Müller CEO @ rainmaker digital "Google Agency and Digital Marketing Agency for the Hospitality and Tourism Industry has 35+ years of experience in IT and 15+ years of experience in digital marketing in the hospitality and tourism industry, as well as 8 years of experience in the Southern African tourism industry, Thomas has an in-depth understanding of the relevant source markets, value chains and the market dynamics in Southern Africa. Thomas used to work in Digital Marketing and in on site Resort management at the 5-star TUI and Thomas Cook properties. As General Manager Marketing & IT he was part of the turnaround team of O&L Leisure Hotels & Lodges in Namibia. From the marketing perspective, he was part of the design, development and opening team of O&L’s Strand Hotel Swakopmund.”

Over the past two months I have been looking into the increasing popularity of OTA’s and how the new traveller demographic influences it. Now I suggest we look at what value-add OTA’s bring to lodges, hotels, B&B’s and the like. Each supplier in the tourism industry has complete freedom of choice whether or not to get into a business relationship with ‘non-traditional electronic third party intermediaries (aka OTAs)’. Yes, in many industries there is a ‘reluctance’ to pay commissions. This has existed in our tourism industry for decades and long before OTAs appeared on the scene. Just look at the changes brought about in the airline industry. Look also at the steps taken in the hotel industry and so on. Also look at the recent competitive strategies some huge multinational hotel chains such as Hilton or Marriott have adopted pertaining to commissions paid and distribution control given to OTAs. It is interesting to note that none of them has stopped doing business with OTAs. All they have done is at last ‘wake up’ and began paying full attention to the power of digital marketing in all disciplines to reach all possible source markets and market segments. Another way of looking at it is to ask what value-add does to an OTA or similarly bring me as the owner of any given hotel or lodge. 1.

2.

The listing with an OTA is free of charge, including uploading images, descriptions, 360° Virtual Reality immersive content, rates and real-time availability. The ability to instantly update rates, availability, images and content or to participate in the many global marketing campaigns they offer, is also free of charge.

94

MARCH 2018 | FLAMINGO

MARKETING

3.

This free listing exposes your hotel to hundreds of millions of real and potential travellers in every corner of the world, daily. This includes all those who are researching and do not book with the OTA in question. 4. Even as a small independent lodge, listing with an OTA gives you the marketing reach previously only available to huge multinational chains. OTAs have levelled the playing field for you as a small lodge. 5. OTAs in no way dictate what your rates should be and simply list your rack rates or those you wish to trade with at any given time. By focusing on the consumer they simply allow natural market forces to come into play. 6. With their review platforms they ensure that all your excellent ‘guest service’ is exposed to the world allowing you to compete and enjoy the benefits of all your hard work. 7. The only time you pay an OTA any money is when a booking is made and (most importantly) paid for. As there are no marketing costs, no wasted marketing costs are incurred, yet a huge amount of marketing is provided. 8. All OTA bookings are paid for in full immediately at the time of booking, or in some cases, on the day of departure and are subject to strict cancellation policies which are always adhered to. 9. Commissions then paid range only between 15% and 25%. 10. The industry norms for Retail Travel Agents stand at around 10% with many of the larger chains achieving 12-15%. None of them can provide the marketing reach of an OTA who provides it at no cost.

11.

12.

13.

14.

15.

STO industry norms are from 20% to 35% off ‘rack’ but this so called ‘rack rate’ is fixed up to 18 months in advance with no ability to change them. The OTAs rate is a ‘real rack rate’ as it is fixed now for today and can be revised at any time and can thus reflect up to date market and demand conditions any time. In Namibia ‘exceptional’ or ‘special’ STO deals are concluded at even 40% or more off the ‘rack rate’ set up to 18 months in advance. Payment for STO bookings is contractually supposed to be made within 30 days of guests’ departure but in many cases can take up to 60 or even 90 days. Having your property listed in one of their agents brochures can often cost between N$5 000 and N$10 000 per season (+/- 6 months) labelled as ‘brochure contribution’ in their agents’ brochures, plus the STO rate provided. When a principal adds up annual costs of hosting complimentary or heavily discounted travel agent familiarisation/educational tours and international trade show/events organised by tour operators along with other activities, one soon realises that combined with the above listed commissions of 25% to 40% the traditional tour operator/DMC/travel agent route comes at a cost significantly higher than by the non-traditional third party intermediaries (aka OTAs).

In the northern reaches of Namibia, seven-day weddings are the cultural norm . . .

Iyaloo, Iyaloo!” The elder called out her thanks after delivering a torrent of prayers and blessings to the wedding couple seated in front of her. The women around her, dressed in bright cotton traditional dresses, ululated and swished their cow-tail switches in celebration. It was the final day of the week-long wedding when the bride and groom were allowed to enter the groom’s family grounds. The white flag, indicating that a marriage was underway, waved gently in the breeze from the top of a marula tree, accentuated against a stormy sky. This gift-giving ceremony marked the end of the traditional part of the seven-day wedding.

he cows in the adjacent enclosure, presented as gifts and having survived the pot, observed the proceedings indifferently, seemingly oblivious to the 38-degree heat. A wash of sunset colours painted the sky above the makalani palms as guests entered the traditional homestead through the entrance in the mopane-branch palisade, and made their way to the outdoor wedding venue. Here, under the

trees, tables had been elegantly laid with white table clothes, a delicious feast was being kept warm and a DJ had begun to play his lively wedding repertoire. The seamless leap from days-of-old to the 21st century in a heartbeat was totally acceptable to the contented crowd. For a first-timer like me, it was a surprising and wonderful merging of age-old customs, a fairy-tale church wedding and modern-day celebrations. And, somehow it all made perfect sense.

any young Oshiwambo couples, living in the towns or city make their way to their family homes in the O-regions, which stretch above Etosha National Park like a series of interlinking jigsaw puzzle pieces, to celebrate their union with their families. I wondered about the relevance of it in today’s world – and soon found out. A young woman explained her sentiments, clarifying my blurry musings into focused thought. “Our traditions are who we are, our identity, the core of our culture,” she said, adding that she too intended to make the journey one day from her modern lifestyle and job in Windhoek to return to the north for her wedding ceremony.

ontinuing with my wedding queries during the festivities, under the welcome shade of trees at the homesteads and outside the church while waiting for the bride and groom to arrive, I quickly got to the crux of it. “It’s about receiving the blessings of the elders, so that our marriages will be blessed,” I was told. I heard it repeated again and again. It seems to be the tried and tested recipe for a healthy and happy marriage.

From the initial announcement of the wedding and the placement of flags outside the homesteads, the week had unfolded with a series of traditions that were punctuated mid-week by the lobola ceremony, when a delegation from the groom delivered a cow as a gift to the bride’s family (oyoonda in Oshikwanyama, iigonda in Oshindonga and commonly known as lobola in southern Africa). Despite the vast distances between the homesteads in the different towns and the long, sandy tracks that needed to be negotiated to get there, the bride’s family kept the groom’s party waiting outside the homestead, as is the norm.

As is custom in Africa, everyone was welcome to attend the wedding and everyone contributed to the events: by delivering livestock, and by adding their donation for the church and their contribution at the gift-giving and prayer ceremonies, which took place at both homesteads on the final two days. These ceremonies gave way to elaborate dinners, first at the bride’s family home and the next night at the groom’s, after which the bride and groom could finally remain together as a married couple.

The groom’s delegation ululated and sang announcing their arrival before being greeted and allowed to release the cow into the kraal (animal enclosure). They were then invited inside to complete the ceremony in the oshoto (reception area) and to share the traditional grainy sorghum drink.

On this special night, everyone waited in anticipation for the bride and groom to enter the dining area. The tables - bedecked with crystal and roses, the soft lighting and the delicate decorations that dangled from the trees transformed the simple homestead yard into an enchanted outdoor venue. When the wedding song began to play, the crowd turned to the entrance, eyes transfixed, and cheered as the handsome group of bridesmaids and groomsmen danced their way between the tables in an Oshiwambo-Bollywood style. The bride and groom followed, gracefully dancing their way to the main table to sit like the queen and king of Love, radiating happiness.

Traditions continued in the subsequent days according to wedding protocol with the dressing of the groom by his namesake (a role model after whom a new-born child is named) and a presentation of items for his wardrobe. They included the delivery of a suitcase to the bride with the wedding dress and other important and appreciated items. Friendly banter between the families is an accepted part of the events, as is the waiting game.

This lovely and lively rendition of a formal wedding will always stay with me; a moment of beauty and energy to carry forward as a bright light of inspiration. While the fresh night breeze cooled down the scorching day’s heat and the stars shone through the clouds, presided over by a buttery waxing moon, champagne bottles popped in unison at all the tables. The guests raised their glasses to toast the happy couple, wishing them well on their journey through Life.

Finally, on day five, the bride and groom entered the modern world, dressed in their wedding finery, with an entourage of exquisitely dressed bridesmaids and groomsmen for the church wedding and nuptials.

I could feel those blessings bobbing about on the breeze and circling the jubilant pair. And, I could, without much effort, imagine those ancient ones looking on – and smiling down. by Ron Swilling

POD iDLADLA Affordable housing is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges facing Africa. Johannesburg architect Clara da Cruz-Almeida designed one innovative, attractive solution for young professionals – Pod iDladla…meaning ‘my place’ in Jo’burg urban-slang. Edited by Anne Schauffer Photographs by Lisa Johnston

Prompted by the financial impossibility of a young professional friend’s quest for a home he could afford to buy, architect Clara da Cruz-Almeida set out to find a solution. Freehold land was beyond his reach – as it is for most young professional South Africans - so she began thinking about the possibility of owning a home…but not the land. Rather lease the land. Almeida began work on a pre-fabricated, compact housing model, one which could either stand solo, or be modulated into bigger units. You own the home, and lease the land. When you want to move – or your lease is up – you simply move the house. What she envisaged ultimately was that later, the pod-owner

would be able to buy a conventional home, and use the POD as a site office, a holiday home, or indeed, sell it to the landowner for rental purposes. There were three parameters to the POD: the minimal space you need to live (17m2 was considered the right size), the space you really need for things; the size of boards used to finish the inside of the unit, and it had to be easily portable. Affordability would always be a driver. Almeida visited a landscape architect in Stockholm who’d converted a cupboard space into a toilet. She took note. So too, Japanese approaches to living in extremely small spaces. “They have very flexible rooms. In a tiny house, every space should have dual usage – if not triple!” The Pod-Idladla therefore has flexible spaces, not rooms. For Almeida, a facility that’s used once a day for five minutes doesn’t need a room to itself. The Pod structure consists of a ventilated wall system structured with timber or steel, dependent on position or availability. Timber has the highest acoustic and thermal performance, responds better than most materials under fire and has the lowest embodied energy. The cladding finishes can be any locally sourced skin. It was crucial to minimise waste and construction time, and use materials which could be completed in a factory, reducing time spent on-site. Pre-fabrication ensures quality, lower labour costs while increasing skills levels, adding productivity, and reducing material waste to just 2%.

The Pod’s compact space design’s critical space-saving strategies are: • the shower in a place of passage • the living area is on the covered deck, coaxing one outwards towards nature and the community • the double volume creates a passive ventilation flow while offering a feeling of spaciousness. For the interior design and fittings, Almeida approached legendary design company, Dokter And Misses. With limited floor space, storage solutions were applied vertically: Dokter And Misses installed a plywood box system that could easily be moved between spaces, using universal brackets. Light fittings were modified to be similarly transferrable – hung from sockets or hooks and plugged in at the wall. In such a tiny space, everything matters…like the furniture, which is also multipurpose. Great care was taken with the colours, patterns, designs and more because nothing can dominate in a small space. The most incredible thing designed by Dokter And Misses is a… foldable couch! It folds and fits below the shelves; or opens up and can be used in 3 different ways. One of the challenges for Almeida, was to make the pod adaptable to different climatic zones. The module is fitted with multiple alternate energies to be dependent on location. Spaceheating strategies are promoted through the siting of the POD: a rock-bed or a ventilated floor or recycled water-tanks below the floor. For Almeida, the underlying idea for the Pod’s lifestyle is not to spend all one’s time at home: “Live smaller, spend less money, go out more often.”

DOMESTIC TOURISTS RALLY BEHIND NWR With the economic headwinds that Namibia is facing, we as NWR are grateful at the number of domestic tourists that did not let the financial challenges prevent them from visiting some of our well-known resorts during the past festive season. It is important to note that December is generally the time that most local tourists have the opportunity to not only explore our facilities but Namibia as a whole. That is why we find it pleasing that since December 2015 the overall occupancy has increased by an average of 10% each year.

The increase in the occupancy is mainly attributed to Okaukuejo Resort, Dolomite Resort, Sesriem Campsite, Sossus Dune Lodge and Terrace Bay Resort that tend to receive well over 60% occupancy during the festive period while Torra Bay Campsite enjoys full occupancy. Other resorts such as Gross Barmen Resort, Hardap Resort, Waterberg Resort and Popa Falls Resort do very well just before Christmas up until New Year’s Day. It must also be noted that this previous holiday season saw us operating Jakkalsputz, Mile 72 and Mile 108 after other entities had managed them in the past.

DISADVANTAGED YOUTH RECEIVE EMPOWERMENT THROUGH TOURISM On the backdrop of having helped five young disadvantaged women from the /Ai-/Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. We and Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) have embarked on assisting another group of ten unemployed youth from the Hai-//om San and Ovahimba communities to be trained in hospitality and tracking. The latest training commenced on 22 January 2018 in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa.

Youth from the Hai-om San and Ovahimba community with NWR's Managing Director, Mrs. Zelna Hengari (Centre) before departing to Graaff-Reinet, South Africa for their hospitality training.

The central goal of the training is to empower the previously disadvantaged youth to acquire viable skills that they can make use of to provide for themselves and their respective communities. This initiative forms part of a continuous youth development programme that we are facilitating on behalf of the two Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA) partner countries to develop tourism in Southern Namibia and Northern South Africa.
