DRINKING WATER
Public transport is available to most tourist destinations in Namibia. In Namibia one drives on the left. There are bus services from Windhoek to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Vic Falls, Swakopmund, Harare, Lusaka and many other smaller busses which connect most of Namibian regions. Namibia’s main railway line runs from the South African border, connecting Windhoek to Swakopmund in the west and Tsumeb and Oshikango in the north. There is an extensive network of international and regional flights from Windhoek. Domestic charters to all destinations.
HEALTH No inoculations are necessary. Should one enter from a country in which yellow fever prevails, one should have proof of vaccination against such disease. Malaria-prophylaxis is recommended if traveling to far northern Namibia during summer.
Tap water is purified and safe to drink. Bottled water is available almost everywhere in the country as well.

Michael Evans, who also joined the workshop, says that his favourite moment in the workshop was “trying to capture the light rays just starting to come across the dunes and light up the trees. The sun rises so fast, that it’s hard not to feel a sense of urgency trying to get the photo while the light is right.”

Cecil the Lion, the media (in particular the use of social media by animal rights activists), and celebrities have stirred public opinion, much of it negative. For Annika, this interaction between children and wildlife goes way beyond education and the joy they experience. She believes it’s healing. The children also get the opportunity to travel to new places, expand their horizons, learn about the world beyond their daily lives.

Merc E-Class Never mind the formidable, rather fantastic Merc S-Class. This “business sedan,” as I heard the people from Merc term it, is arguably the most advanced production machine you can buy right now. The E-Class also embodies all the Benz solidity and sybaritism that you might dare hope for. More than
that it's simply loaded with silicone. This vehicle, in short, is a rolling computer offering unprecedented incar connectivity. Just some highlights of this, the tenth-generation E-Class, including a new diesel engine that turns in hybridlike economy, a nine-speed auto gearbox, and the option of twin 12.3inch displays. These high-resolution
units effectively give a wide-screen, almost completely digital cockpit, while in what Mercedes terms “a first for a car” the steering wheel features touchsensitive Touch Controls. And that's without even going into the driving-assistance systems that virtually make this car semiautonomous. Expect a lot of this tech to eventually filter into other Mercs.

Audi A4 Understatement. Elegance. A sense of never trying too hard – rather like that effortlessly cool kid we all knew at school or university. And subtlety. Above all subtlety. These are some of the great Audi USPs (Unique Selling Points). All of which the new A4 has in spades. Now Ingolstadt's latest version of its small sedan sits in a ferociously competitive segment that includes the likes of the BMW 3 Series, and the Mercedes C-Class. Both admittedly brilliant cars. But while the new Audi A4 looks similar to the outgoing car, this is all part of its subtle aesthetic evolution, and the latest model is lighter, bigger inside, and more aerodynamic than ever, plus a seven-speed S tronic selfshifter replaces the old CVT. It's also loaded with high-tech – much of it optional – while the quality is simply through the roof, especially when it comes to the interior.
VW Tiguan The compact SUV category is another hectically competitive segment – but rather predictably, the new VW Tiguan is simply one of the best machines available in this category. And if its forebear was wildly successful with some 2.8 million being sold globally, expect the latest one to do yet better. This is the first SUV from VW to be based on the MQB platform so it

shares underpinnings and tech with the likes of the Golf and Passat, while it's a little bigger, a little lighter, and way more attractive than the vehicle it replaces. We hardly need add that perceived quality is simply stellar, as are safety and refinement levels. If you can stretch to it, look towards one of the versions using VW's excellent self-shifting DSG 'box.
Toyota Hilux and Fortuner The word “legend” gets terribly overused, especially when it comes to vehicles. Yet it's pretty applicable to the Toyota Hilux, as well as its sibling, the Fortuner. So the all-new models had big boots to fill. But fill them they have, and with aplomb too. The new Hilux and Fortuner have substantially upped the refinement stakes – especially when it comes to the higher-grade models – with everything from a full-colour,
4.2-inch multi-information display to styling that will take them into the next decade. No problem. There's a vast range of engines and transmissions to choose from, with the Hilux alone available in three body styles and a total of over 20 derivatives. But the engines that really get us are the fantastic new 2.4 GD-6 and 2.8 GD-6 turbodiesels, available in both the Hilux and Fortuner. As for that, um, legendary toughness, both these vehicles promise years of unbreakable, unburstable, indestructible service.
Renault Kadjar It has been a busy year for Renault with a number of model launches, but its Kadjar stands out – and even in the
busy SUV/crossover segment it has to be one of the sharpest-looking vehicles in its class. It's a product of the Nissan-Renault alliance with a lot of the mechanical bits coming from the worthy Nissan Qashqai, but this baby revels in more than a hint of Gallic elegance mated to high levels of in-car technology and equipment. In case you're wondering, the name “Kadjar” is derived from two words: “Kad” – inspired by “quad,” apparently. And “jar”, from the French for agile as well as “jaillir”, meaning to emerge suddenly. There you have it.
Honda Civic Type R If you're looking for a hot hatch that is as single-minded as a kid in a

These figures only tell a little part of the story, however, and at full chat the Type R makes for a visceral, tactile, allconsuming experience – particularly at its screaming 7 000rpm redline. But it's hardly the most selfeffacing, subtle or comfortable of cars – which can be a good or a bad thing, depending where you're coming from.

BMW 7 Series Opel Astra It's no accident that the new, 11thgeneration Opel Astra is the 2016 European Car of the Year. It's refined, and – rather remarkably in an age where cars often get larger and lardier with each new incarnation – smaller and lighter than its predecessor, yet larger inside. It's also equipped with a trio of excellent engines, namely a one-litre
Aaah, the BMW 7 Series. In proof that the years fly by like autumn leaves, I have (rather unbelievably it seems) been road-testing these big Beamers since around mid-1995. With each model they have, of course, become yet more brilliant. Which takes us to the all-new sixthgeneration incarnation of BMW's flagship launched this year, and you should know that the press release on
candy store, you have to look at the Honda Civic Type R – arguably the fastest front-wheel-drive hatchback you can buy. Indeed, the new Honda Civic Type R turned in a lap time of just seven minutes and 50.63 seconds around the legendary 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany. A time that's unrivalled by any other front-wheel-drive hatch. The mega-Civic bangs down 228kW and 400Nm from a high-revving, turboed V-Tec two-litre powerplant.

this car alone is nearly 16 000 words long. So there's a huge amount to say about it. But in nutshell, this uber-BMW if lighter than ever, laden with technology that borders on science-fiction-like, and it's available in guises that include a plug-in hybrid. Above all, it's extraordinarily driver-friendly. As with certain other very good large cars, it seems to shrink around the driver, making it possible to hustle it along like a far smaller vehicle. Its biggest competitor is the Mercedes S-Class, still the benchmark in the super saloon category say some – but the 7 Series is arguably the one to have if you want to press on. Another Bavarian launched in 2016 that's worth a very quick mention is the M2. This car is not only the most affordable way to buy into the BMW M family, it's also arguably the most intoxicating. In spirit and in sheer, screaming chuckability it's close to the old M3 (E36).
VW Golf GTI Clubsport This car isn't nearly as wild and fizzy as the Honda Civic Type R elsewhere on these pages. What it is is the best incarnation yet of the Golf GTI – a vehicle that created a whole new class of car when it was born 40 years ago. It's also the hottest, most potent incarnation of this vehicle yet, with subtle aesthetic cues to separate it from the standard GTI, as well as an

engine packing substantially more poke (195kW as opposed to 162kW). It's a sharp, honed machine, too – yet it's entirely useable as a tame everyday driver. Expect it to be pretty collectible as well.
Ferrari 488 GTB This is a Ferrari, so naturally it's fast. Very, very fast. After all, it uses an all-new 3 902cc V8 turbo powerplant pumping out 492kW at 8 000rpm, and 760Nm at 3 000rpm. Enough to take it from zero to 100km/h in three seconds flat, and on to over 330km/h. And enough to take it
from rest to 200km/h in a remarkable 8.3 seconds. All the while singing a veritable mechanical opera. But this turbocharged replacement for the normally aspirated 458 is far more than an impressive set of numbers. It's also beautifully balanced, intuitive, and alive, and you seem to drive it almost by telepathy. All of which serves to remind us why the very word “Ferrari” has unmatched and unrivalled halo status. Of course you'll pay. But you are getting a badge that for good reason is one of the most revered in motoring.

That will move you from rest to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds, and on to 232km/h, with an exhaust note billed as offering “a satisfying, deep sound.� Rear-wheel drive, agility, high levels of active and passive safety, and a rallying heritage is all part of the package.
Diesel desire We have always maintained that VW's Passat is one of the most underrated, understated sedans on our roads. We're not alone. The Passat has been widely acclaimed by motoring media elsewhere, along with contented owners. Now the range has become yet more desirable with the addition of a 2.0 TDI turbodiesel model. Output
New Models round up is rated at 130kW and 350Nm from as low as 1 500rpm. And with its six-speed DSG gearbox, the Passat will move from rest to 100km/h in a brisk 8.2 seconds, topping out 228km/h, while claimed fuel consumption is just five litres per 100km. The entire model line has also been restructured, with new standard features, and you can have

Up, up, and away
Upgraded and awesome Toyota's best-selling – and frankly brilliant – Hilux and Fortuner have just benefited from upgrades. Specifically, the Hilux SRX has been beefed-up by a change from the previous “narrow-body” design to the new “wide-body” construction. This sees it getting bold, integrated over-fenders – as fitted to existing Raider models – mated a wider front bumper design. It's now decidedly chunkier and more muscular-looking with the Single-cab and Double-cab SRX being wider by 55mm. Xtra-cab models already enjoy “wide-body” construction, so all three body shapes now share the

same width. Exterior mirrors also now get turn signal lamps, while the previous steel wheels are replaced by 17-inch alloys wearing wider rubber than before. As ever, SRX models come with the widely acclaimed 110kW, 400Nm 2.4-litre GD-6 engine or a 2.7-litre petrol VVTi powerplant. Meanwhile, 2.8 GD-6 and 4.0 V6 Fortuner models now come standard with head-turning 18-inch alloys replacing the previous 17-inch numbers. Plus the 2.7 VVTi and 2.4 GD-6 Fortuner models now sport leather interior trim, replacing the previous textile offering – at no extra cost. Nice one, Toyota.
It has to be one of the cleverest, best built compact cars on our market. It's the VW up! and it now comes with sharper lines, a sportier design, new colours, new wheels, new interior design – and a desirability factor that's, well, upped. Changes include redesigned headlights with LED daytime running lights, modified bumper, a sportier bonnet, redesigned rear lights, new wheels measuring up to 16-inches, and an interior that smacks more of high quality than ever before. The 999cc normally aspirated motor with 55kW and 95Nm remains, while the up! can be had in four equipment levels: Take up!, Move up! up! beats, and Cross up!. All derivatives come
standard with raft of safety features including ABS, four airbags, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The Cross up and up! beats will be available in the first quarter of 2017. But irrespective of which version you opt for, perky performance, good equipment levels, unbelievable agility, and VW solidity are all part of the deal.
French affair Can you name the best-selling French car ever? Well, we'll make it easy – it's the Renault Clio, with global sales of over 13-million units since its 1990 launch. Now the Clio 4 currently on sale has just benefited from a host of enhancements inside and outside, including what Renault terms “full-LED front lighting signature” on the Dynamique model.
Interiors, too, are yet more refined and elegant – in a rather French idiom. Seats have been redesigned for more lateral support, and exclusive to Authentique models is the R&GO® app – a smartphone/tablet multifunction application designed to streamline infotainment. As ever, power comes from perky 66kW and 88kW turbopetrol motors mated to five-speed manual 'boxes or a six-speed EDC self-shifter in the case of the latter.
Coupé coup Since its launch we've loved the Mercedes GLC for everything from its functionality to unassailable quality. But if the “normal” GLC is a bit too, well, pedestrian for you, you might
like the new GLC Coupé – billed by its makers as “the sports car among midsize SUVs.” Besides slinky styling that makes it eight centimetres longer and four centimetres lower than the regular GLC, this machine comes with a standard sports suspension as well as more direct sports steering. Also part of the package are the likes of 4Matic permanent allwheel drive with 9G-Tronic nine-speed auto transmission, a striking, deeply raked diamond radiator grille, and wheels as big as 20-inches. The GLC Coupé is available in six engine variants, three diesel and three petrol. These include the four-cylinder diesel models GLC 220 d 4Matic Coupé and GLC 250 d 4Matic Coupé with outputs ranging from 125kW to 150kW. In the GLC 350 d 4Matic Coupé with its V6 diesel you can bank on 190kW of power. Petrol fans, meanwhile, will dig the GLC 250 4Matic Coupé with 155kW, and the GLC 300 4Matic Coupé with 180kW. And if it's muscle to match those looks that you crave, there's always the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4Matic Coupé. With its V6 biturbo engine you can expect 270kW – and a zero-to-100km/h time of 4.9 seconds. Standard equipment levels are simply stellar, of course, with a tempting list of optional extras to choose from.

elayed anticipation can be a wonderful thing, serving to sharpen the appetite – which is precisely the case with the all-new Mitsubishi Triton SU. Indeed, there are huge expectations placed on this vehicle, and there is also huge pent-up demand from prospective buyers wanting to avail themselves of the latest addition to the Mitsubishi range. Now those expectations are well-grounded. After all, this Japanese
manufacturer has carved out an enviable reputation for reliability and durability and functionality with vehicles such as the Pajero and Pajero Sport, as well as the outgoing Triton. The latter first debuted locally in 2007, and has seen Mitsubishi sell more than four-million pick-ups in over 150 countries around the world. But the new Triton SU (Sport Utility) isn't just a subtle evolution of the outgoing bakkie. Oh no, it's a whole new ballgame with everything from a newly-developed 2.4-litre MIVEC turbocharged common-rail diesel
engine to the latest version of Mitsubishi's famed Super Select II four-wheel drive system – all mated to tough sophistication. This potent new motor features an aluminium cylinder block to save weight and can be paired with Mitsubishi’s latest six-speed manual or, for those who prefer to let technology do the work of gear-changing, a fivespeed automatic gearbox. “Our new lightweight turbodiesel engine is fitted with Mitsubishi’s latest generation MIVEC technology and weighs 30kg less than its predecessor, resulting in improved responsiveness, fuel consumption, handling, cornering,

and braking performance,” as Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa, says. This super-responsive 2.4-litre engine with a class-leading low compression ratio of 15.5:1, is supplemented by a variable geometry turbocharger as well as Mitsubishi’s proprietary engine mapping. Output is healthy. Very healthy. You can figure on a robust 133kW at 3 500 rpm, and 430Nm of torque at 2 500rpm. Very importantly, for everything from off-road use to load-lugging to daily drivability, more than 350Nm is available from just 1 500 rpm. Indeed, that low-end torque is a major improvement, by some 25 percent, over that of the 2.5-litre turbodiesel fitted to the outgoing Triton. As for that five-speed automatic or six-speed manual gearbox, they are available with the option of two- or four-wheel drive to both. Each gearbox has seen a significant redesign from its predecessor with the manual gearbox now featuring shorter and smoother shifts, and the automatic gearbox offering electronic manual shifting.

Those who opt for 4X4 versions will get treated to the latest version of Mitsubishi’s widely acclaimed Super Select II 4WD system. This state-of-the-art system is unique to Mitsubishi, and offers four intelligent driving modes which can be engaged from the electronic drive-selector in the cabin. This multifunction setup gives drivers precise control in challenging weather conditions or on loose surfaces with low-range modes, including a rear diff-lock. Which, of course, is essential for tackling tough and technical off-road obstacles. One of the Triton’s popular and versatile modes distributes torque in a 40:60 ratio between front and rear axles via a centre differential. The result? The Triton SU performs like a true SUV on gravel and wet, slippery roads, and enjoys hugely improved cornering performance. The revised distribution also delivers greater mechanical durability than the traditional 50:50 configuration used by all other 4x4 competitors. And let it be said that the words “durability” and
“Mitsubishi” go together like cheese and wine. Yet the Triton SU is also remarkably refined. The comprehensively revised suspension contributes to a stable and soothing ride of the sort you'd expect from a sophisticated SUV or sedan. As Nic Campbell says, “International reports have already found the Triton SU to be the most car-like pick-up to drive. Fitted with a new-generation lightweight diesel engine, upgraded suspension and reduced NVH levels, this new sport utility will impress owners with a comfortable ride that hasn’t compromised those workhorse principles, and multipurpose functionality.” At least part of this comfort comes from minimised body roll that translates into precise handling, while cabin noise is reduced using noise-absorbing and damping materials in key areas. As for being carlike, well, the Triton’s bestin-class turning radius of 5.9 metres compares to the manoeuvrability of midsized sedans. The comfort factor also extends to the ergonomically designed cabin. This
mixes car-like sophistication with all the functionality of a multi-purpose utility vehicle. The J-line design of the Double Cab results in class-leading interior space with plenty of leg and head room, while shoulder space is commendable, too. Creature comforts are all present and correct, and huge attention has been paid to safety. The Triton SU’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body construction features
high-tensile steel to absorb energy and maintain cabin integrity. Pre-tensioners tighten the seatbelts in a collision, restraining the occupants and allowing the airbags to work effectively. Active Stability with Traction Control, ABS, and Electronic Brake Force Distribution are all part of the deal, too, helping the driver keep control in emergency situations. The Triton SU is set to officially go on sale in February.
And yes. The wait will have been well worth it...

formation pass like a burst of dirty thunder...” So wrote late, legendary “gonzo” journalist Hunter S Thompson in his epic 1966 book “Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga.” And indeed 50 years ago, HarleyDavidsons, bike of choice for those Hell's Angels – as well as a plethora of others, from American cops to weekend cruisers – might have had a bit of a bad-boy image. Well, not “might” – they did! Today, however, the best, most brotherly people you'll meet on two wheels tend to ride these machines from Milwaukee – machines that not only are now officially available in Namibia, but which have a heritage going back well over a century.

Now Harley was founded out of a small shed in 1903 by William S. Harley and brothers Arthur and Walter Davidson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When Harley and Davidson produced and sold their first motorcycle in 1903, they were just one of many small motorcycle marques popping up across the country. Today, of course, the HarleyDavidson brand is deeply rooted in American culture, as well as contemporary culture as a whole, and some say that the history of the company intertwines with the history of America itself. Harley-Davidson incorporated in 1907, with William Davidson officially joining forces with his two brothers and Harley. Setting down roots in Milwaukee, Harley-Davidson began hiring employees. By the end of the decade they were producing bikes using the signature 45-degree aircooled V-Twin – the engine that is so synonymous with the brand. During the next decade H-D continued to expand. Huge sales were generated by the government, with the American military sourcing Harley motorcycles during World War I. And over the years the brand grew yet greater. By the early 1930s, its only surviving domestic rival was Indian. Again H-D

expanded in peacetime and found itself producing huge quantities of bikes for the American military during World War II. Some 90 000 in total, in fact. Postwar, Harley-Davidson developments include the introduction of the Sportster in 1957, the oldest production model in the current lineup, as well as other signature models. Harley experienced changes in ownership in the Sixties, going public in 1965, but today the Davidson family remains involved in the brand. And the Eighties and Nineties saw the introduction of model families that continue to this day, like the Softail and Road King lines, joining classic models like the Electra Glide. The advent of the millennium saw Harley-Davidson's image as the classic – some would even say ultimate! – American icon alive and well. And the company has also worked formidably hard to improve the riding quality of its bikes, and especially its touring machines. In 2009, for instance, it did away with the stamped and welded singlepiece frame that anchored Harley touring motorcycles for the last 30 years and replaced it with a cast, single-spar, rigid-backbone frame. It also went with a wider, longer swingarm. Plus Harley introduced a
new three-wheel motorcycle called the Tri Glide that has the classic styling and popular touring features of its best-selling Ultra Classic Electra Glide. Meanwhile, there is a vast range of Harley parts and apparel available, and today the range extends from the more affordable but exceptionally edgy, iconic Harley-Davidson Street 750 through to its big tourers. Just some of the highlights for the 2017 model year number the fact that the Touring family is powered by the all-new Milwaukee-Eight engine. The next iconic Harley Big Twin, the Milwaukee-Eight engine was designed from the ground up to deliver a better ride, and it is billed as
the most powerful, coolest-running motor ever built by this manufacturer. And what a special sighting we had: not one but two rhino, a mother and youngster, who browsed peacefully while we peered at them and Jasson made notes – how healthy they looked, what they were doing, etc… and then we left, the two grey animals being none the wiser. The human element here is also extraordinary. Chatting to the trackers over lunch, we learnt more about their dedication: Jasson worked at another camp in maintenance but felt he wanted to do more, so he joined SRT. Albertus has a farm but left it to come and protect the rhino. Martyn has done this for 12 years and feels it is his calling. Indeed, all at Desert Rhino Camp see their work as something more. They spend the day with me in my studio, so I suppose my entire working day is centred around animals, either studying them or sculpting them.”

Nearby a baby hippo pops up shyly before sinking down under the protection of his mom. Back on the Zambezi Queen it’s time for the only other serious activity you need rouse yourself for: eating. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are all included in the rate, as are all drinks except premium spirits and bubbles. The chef makes sure you get your money’s worth, and then some. A multi-course gourmet dinner on my last night was a highlight: coconut sweet potato soup followed by falafel with mango chutney and a choice of fillet or line fish, topped off by cheeses and chocolate parfait. After dinner the bar closes for orders at 10.30pm and generators are cut as the queen of the Chobe beds down for the night. Aside from the occasional guttural rumbling of hippos, there’s nothing but stillness until the chirping of birds and distant sound of engines roaring to life signal the start of another luxuriously lazy day on the river.

I
t is the largest technology trade fair and conference in Europe, arguably in the world. After only six years, it has grown from 400 wide-eyed and bushy tailed attendees of the geeky persuasion, to a whopping 53,000 eager folks, from 166 countries, lining the streets of Lisbon, to marvel, be inspired, ask questions, find funding, discuss and pitch ideas, network, and generally see exactly what TOMORROW will look like. The Web Summit is truly a peek into tomorrow. Walking through the enormous exhibition halls, I had a flashback of the 1980’s futuristic movie, Total Recall, where working-class gentry were reading their self-updating newspapers on tablets, while commuting to work in the metro. I remember marvelling at the possibility of actual printed newspapers disappearing one day, and the possibility of news reaching the readers in real time. With a very real sense of déjà vu, I realised that the avalanche of technological developments, artificial intelligence, and new disruptive technologies is what tomorrow will look like. One could literally see our future world being shaped in front of our very eyes. The Web Summit is literally the place where existing technologies, processes, infrastructure and intelligence as we know it, is being made obsolete. One of the most awe-inspiring exhibitions and lectures was that of Hyperloop One - basically the technology that is now busy rendering aviation, road and rail transport obsolete. Furthermore, Hyperloop One is no longer a concept - it is already in construction.
In its simplest form, Hyperloop One is a train in a tube. A very, very fast train in a very, very big tube, one that floats on an electro-magnetic field, and moves along a low-pressure tube at 1200 km an hour. It is estimated that Hyperloop One will begin transporting passengers as early as 2021. A trip between Johannesburg and Cape Town will take 38 minutes… The original Web Summit had its humble beginnings in Dublin. The brainchild of the visionary Paddy Cosgrave, the Web Summit has today evolved as a combination and platform to showcase new products and technological developments, a place to soundboard ideas, to seek investment, to be enchanted by no less than 677 authoritative, world-renowned speakers. More than 150 brand-new start-up enterprises attended the 2016 Web Summit in Lisbon, along with 1,490 existing start-up companies from across the globe who are in the process of developing, tweaking and rolling out their wizardry to the receptive international audience. These exhibitions included software development, hardware development, Apps, artificial intelligence devices, self-driving cars, 3-D printing, new applications for drones, big data processing, security, media and advertising, healthcare and conservation initiatives, and new applications for virtual reality. There were 17 stages set out among four gigantic halls in which the Web Summit was hosted, where authoritative speakers lectured on every technological topic under the sun.

The Web Summit was superbly organised. The topics of the speeches were published daily, and a strict timetable adhered to. Typically, the speeches and interviews lasted about 20 minutes each. Attendees could easily plan their topics of interest, find the exact location on the special application written specifically for Web Summit, find a free seat, and attend the lectures. They were almost 35,000 seats set out around 17 stages. A testimony to the international popularity
of
these
lectures
and
speeches was the fact that over 4 million people viewed the centre stage talks live on the Web Summit Facebook page. Although the entrance tickets were pricey by any standards - beginning at â‚Ź700, and topping â‚Ź5000, the fact that a staggering 53,000 attendees from 166 countries eagerly parted with their money, is testimony to
the
truly
global
impact
and
opportunities Web Summit represents. During the course of the Web Summit, tickets for the 2017 event were offered in batches of 1000 tickets. They sold out in six minutes. As they say in the classics - the defence rests. Messages sent between attendees on the Web Summit App alone numbered 1,835,841. At last count there were 4,207,053 Facebook views during the three-day Summit‌

The passive investor, the active investor and the activist investor Buying shares in a company can mean more than just investing for good returns
T
he conventional way that most of us are familiar with or can relate to, is to buy a couple of shares in different sectors for diversification, and to keep them medium- to long term. The investor is more of an observer, not giving any input and only reacting if there are fundamental changes – a so-called passive investor. These types of portfolios hold shares that are listed on stock exchanges and therefore a fair amount of information is available, but otherwise the passive investor relies and trusts management to know what they are doing. The passive investor also bypasses corporate actions by abstaining from the right to vote as shareholder, or simply by voting in favour of management views. Over recent years shareholders have become more assertive. A strong link emerged between expected returns and the internal performance of the invested companies. Shareholders started asking questions in order to understand what they were investing in. They became interested in their right to vote, preferred transparency and were closely observing the moves of management – the active investor. Like the passive investor, their main aim still was to obtain good returns on their investments. Lately we have come across a different breed of investors - those that portray influential behaviour. They adopt a campaign-like approach in their investment endeavours. Their aim to make money can sometimes even become secondary. They buy listed shares and exercise their shareholding rights, much like the active investor, but they are also utilising the benefit as a

group of shareholders to push politicalor ethical views as well as using the listed companies’ environment to do so. This kind of investor is called the activist investor. Activist investors deliberately use their voting rights and the right to speak at general meetings and otherwise, as well as public exposure and media to voice opinions. Where there is a concern about sustainable social aspects, it can now be brought to the attention of the board, ultimately resulting in change and an all-over positive impact. Being a group of activist investors can become quite a powerful tool: this independent force can denounce companies that are guilty of environmental malpractice, child labour, political agendas and other illegal practices. Management may be severely annoyed by such interference, but sometimes it takes objective observation to point out certain shortcomings. A good example is the story of McDonalds: An Oaklandbased shareholder activist organization ‘As You Sow’ filed a resolution asking McDonald’s to replace its foam beverage cups with more eco-friendly paper cups. The resolution went to a shareholder vote and received nearly 30 percent approval. In 2012, ‘As You Sow’ filed the same resolution, but withdrew it when the company took steps toward adopting the policy. A year later, McDonald’s announced that it would begin using paper cups in its 14,000 American stores. (Source: ‘In These Times – Storming the Corporate Castle’) On the contrary the existence of a company could end up in jeopardy if its financial situation is ignored due to a fundamental belief or a group pursuing
egotistical values. The louder they are campaigning, the bigger the impact on the listed company. Markets could end up discounting the share price based on negative perception. The situation then gains unexpected momentum as a result of media involvement and even the activist investor group loses its control over the situation.. With this phenomenon on the rise, management needs to become more cognisant of public shareholding in their company. In conclusion it should be said that the power of the masses should not be underestimated.

Baggage Guidelines
At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.
Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following We offer our passengers a generous free hand baggage allowance, with maximum weight of 10kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.
